DEAR VIEWERS, We believe that there are no limits to the Müpa Budapest experience. We would like, even during this extraordinary situation, for our fantastic audience to still be able to encounter the world’s most outstanding and thrilling artists each evening – this time in their own homes. It is precisely for this reason that we have decided to unlock our media library for everyone over the weeks to come and – each night at the familiar times: 7 pm, 7.30 pm or 8 pm, depending on genre – open Müpa Budapest’s virtual concert hall by providing access to many live concerts (although without an audience) or an unforgettable performance from past years, which we’ll transmit on our website, and our YouTube channel. We trust that, in this way, we will be able to make the evenings you are spending at home more pleasant and full of magical and uplifting moments. Take good care, and let’s continue to stick together!

Tuesday, 23 February 2021, 7.30 pm

KRISTÓF BARÁTI AND DÉNES VÁRJON Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216 • Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K. 491 • Mendelssohn: Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Orchestra in D minor, MWV O 4 Kristóf Baráti – violin • Dénes Várjon – piano Featuring: Concerto Budapest (Concertmaster: Zsófia Környei) A concert consisting solely of concerto works – it’s like a supper you’re served cake for each of the courses! But how refreshingly varied these works in the same genre are! Following a violin concerto in a major key will be a piano concerto in a minor key, both of them courtesy of Mozart. After the interview, the two artists will perform Mendelssohn’s double concerto for violin and piano. There will be no conductor at this production, as both guests have proved many times that they are able to find opportunities for a chamber music-style dialogue even when they are performing as soloists in front of an orchestra. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

CLASSICAL SYMPHONY

Hungarian National Philharmonic Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1 (‚Classical’), Op. 25 • Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33 • Tchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings, Op. 48 Conductor: Gábor Hontvári Featuring: Alexander Ramm – cello, Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra Yet another concert from the Hungarian National Philharmonic offering a programme, this one consisting purely of works by Russian composers, that is perfectly integrated in concept, and yet varied, with a young, internationally acclaimed Hungarian conductor and an outstanding and likewise young Russian cellist. The pieces to be played – even though Tchaikovsky’s two compositions date from 1877 and 1880, and Prokofiev’s lone one from 1917 – were all conceived under the spell of the Classical style, recreating the same lightness and translucent sound that characterised the era of Mozart and Haydn. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

Saturday, 27 February 2021, 7.30 pm

BUDAFOK DOHNANYI ORCHESTRA Mussorgsky: Night on Bald Mountain • Stravinsky: The Firebird – suite (1919) • Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 in E minor, ‚From the New World’, Op. 95 Conductor: Guido Mancusi The word ‚romantic’ means ‚novelistic’, and it is no coincidence that Romantic music is often narrative or depictive in character, sometimes in a more concrete sense, and sometimes more abstractly. This concert will present two Romantic works, along with a third one positioned on the boundary between Romanticism and Modernism, although with many Romantic features – along with a strong power to narrate and depict... Mussorgsky, Stravinsky and Dvořák constitute the offering at this concert, which will be conducted by the ensemble’s first conductor, Guido Mancusi. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.
