DEAR VIEWERS, We believe that there are no limits to the Müpa Budapest experience. We would like, even during this extraordinary situation, for our fantastic audience to still be able to encounter the world’s most outstanding and thrilling artists each evening – this time in their own homes. It is precisely for this reason that we have decided to unlock our media library for everyone over the weeks to come and – each night at the familiar times: 7 pm, 7.30 pm or 8 pm, depending on genre – open Müpa Budapest’s virtual concert hall by providing access to many live concerts (although without an audience) or an unforgettable performance from past years, which we’ll transmit on our website, and our YouTube channel. We trust that, in this way, we will be able to make the evenings you are spending at home more pleasant and full of magical and uplifting moments. Take good care, and let’s continue to stick together!

We have had the chance to hear him play both as a soloist in recitals and concertos and in chamber music productions, where he has demonstrated how robustly he plays Mussorgsky, the richness of feeling he brings to Tchaikovsky and the poetic colour he produces from Rachmaninoff. Now, however, he is preparing something he has never before presented in Hungary: a jazz concert with his Russian musician friends! The recording was made at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Concert Hall on 3 April 2021. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

THE OPERAS OF RICHARD STRAUSS CONDUCTED BY ZOLTÁN KOCSIS – DOCUMENTARY FILM BY MÜPA BUDAPEST
Creators: Ádám Bősze – reporter • László Reich – camera operator • János Geier – film editor • Miklós Monoki – sound engineer • Judit Várbiró – editor-reporter Zoltán Kocsis deliberately and methodically set about presenting composers’ complete oeuvres. In the course of interpreting the symphonic poems of Richard Strauss, he discovered the invaluable masterpieces that Strauss wrote as an opera composer. This led to his embarking on the massive undertaking of mounting, one after the other and as joint productions between the Hungarian National Philharmonic and Müpa Budapest, fully staged performances of those of the German master’s dramatic works that had never before been performed in Hungary or were played here only rarely. Kocsis intended for the Strauss series to continue with Guntram, Feuersnot, Intermezzo and Die ägyptische Helena, but fate would intervene in their realisation with the artist’s death on 6 November 2016. Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis • Director: Csaba Némedi The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

RICHARD STRAUSS: FRIEDENSTAG R. Strauss: Friedenstag (Peace Day), Op. 81 Performers: Michael Kupfer-Radecky – Commandant of the beleaguered town Christiane Kohl – Maria, his wife • Géza Gábor – A sergeant • Tivadar Kiss – A private soldier • Marcell Bakonyi – A corporal • Dömötör Pintér – A musketeer • György Silló – A bugler • László Lisztes – An officer • Viktor Massányi – A front-line officer • István Horváth – A Piedmontese • Krisztián Cser – Holsteiner, commanding the besieging army • Ric Furman – The burgomaster • Domonkos Blazsó – The bishop • Gertrúd Wittinger – A woman of the people • Soldiers and officers of the garrison and of the besieging army, Town elders, Women of the deputation to the commandant, Townspeople • Featuring: Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Hungarian National Choir (choirmaster: Mátyás Antal) Creators: Gilles Gubelmann – set design • Gianpiera Bühlmann – costumes Dóra Bizják, Szilvia Mikó – musical assistants • Csaba Némedi – director Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis The work will be directed by Austrian-based Hungarian Csaba Némedi and both the Friedenstag and Daphne share a unified stage design. What is more, both operas will be set around a key event of Strauss’s time: the 1936 Berlin Olympics. “The set of Friedenstag features an oversized military drum, which also serves as a platform for the overthrow of the hierarchy. This set element could also be interpreted as a circus manège based on its shape, which is appropriate as the world of the circus revolved around antiquity,” the director said of his concept. This recording was made at the concert held at Müpa Budapest on 3 October 2015. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

RICHARD STRAUSS: DAPHNE R. Strauss: Daphne, Op. 82 Performers: Polina Pasztircsák – Daphne • Ric Furman – Apollo • Andrea Ulbrich – Gaea • Krisztián Cser – Peneios • István Horváth – Leukippos • Marcell Bakonyi – First shepherd • Sándor Boros – Second shepherd • Dömötör Pintér – Third shepherd • György Silló – Fourth shepherd • Ágnes Szalai – First maid • Ágnes Kristófi – Second maid • Featuring: Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Hungarian National Choir (choirmaster: Mátyás Antal) Creators: Gilles Gubelmann – set design • Gianpiera Bühlmann – costumes Dóra Bizják, Szilvia Mikó – musical assistants • Csaba Némedi – director Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Like Friedenstag, the libretto of Daphne, one of Strauss’s most lyrical operas first staged in Budapest at the Opera House in the 1939/40 season, was written by Joseph Gregor and reworks a mythological theme. Strauss’s fourth opera with a Greek theme has already been brought to life by Zoltán Kocsis and his orchestra, in the company of excellent vocal soloists, in 2011 – and this rare experience can now be relived on the Müpa Home programme. This recording was made at the concert held at Müpa Budapest on 3 October 2015. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.
