DEAR VIEWERS, We believe that there are no limits to the Müpa Budapest experience. We would like, even during this extraordinary situation, for our fantastic audience to still be able to encounter the world’s most outstanding and thrilling artists each evening – this time in their own homes. It is precisely for this reason that we have decided to unlock our media library for everyone over the weeks to come and – each night at the familiar times: 6 pm or 7.30 pm, depending on genre – open Müpa Budapest’s virtual concert hall by providing access to many live concerts (although without an audience) or an unforgettable performance from past years, which we’ll transmit on our website, and our YouTube channel. We trust that, in this way, we will be able to make the evenings you are spending at home more pleasant and full of magical and uplifting moments. Take good care, and let’s continue to stick together!

HELSINKI BAROQUE ORCHESTRA Schumann: Genoveva – overture, Op. 81 • Liszt: Orpheus – symphonic poem • Liszt: Prometheus – symphonic poem • Sibelius: Improvisation for orchestra („La tristesse du printemps” – early version of Vårsång), Op. 16 Conductor: Aapo Häkkinen Founded in 1997, the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra is a home for the young generation of performers of historically informed early music: musicians who have given many forgotten works their modern-day premières while also often playing familiar pieces with a new interpretation. For this concert, they are bringing a selection from the Romantic repertoire – but it’s certainly not an everyday occurrence to hear Liszt’s symphonic poems being played on period instruments. The broadcast is a co-production of the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and Müpa Budapest. The recording was made on 23 May 2021 at Helsinki’s Musiikkitalo concert hall. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Lohengrin and Tristan und Isolde: it will be the early and late chapters of his oeuvre being presented this evening by the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and world-famous singers under the baton of Ádám Fischer, the spiritual rector of the Budapest Wagner Days festival. The noted German baritone, last heard at Müpa Budapest performing the music of Bach accompanied by Berlin’s Akademie für Alte Musik, will this time perform a selection of songs by Wagner and Liszt. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

WAGNER MAGIC II
Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer – „Mit Gewitter und Sturm” • Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer – „Die Frist ist um” • Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer – „Traft ihr das Schiff” • Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer – „Wie aus dem Ferne” • Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer – „Steuermann! Laß die Wacht!” • Wagner: Tristan und Isolde – Act 2 Featuring: Catherine Foster, Simone Schneider – soprano • Atala Schöck – mezzo-soprano • Gerhard Siegel, Corby Welch – tenor • Albert Dohmen, Tomasz Konieczny – bass-baritone • Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Hungarian Radio Choir (choirmaster: Zoltán Pad) • Conductor: Ádám Fischer Wagner’s mature output begins with Der fliegende Holländer. This work is not yet a music drama: Wagner himself called it a „romantic opera”. Its structure makes it suitable for performing excerpts from it as a series of highlights. This is what will be happening on this evening, with world-famous singers recalling a few important moments in the work. After the intermission, however, will come the second act of a genuine music drama: Tristan und Isolde. Two different genres from the same composer – under the inspired baton of Ádám Fischer. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

With great narrative gusto, Wagner presents the Fall: the craving for the treasure – and power – that has everyone in its thrall. Along, of course, with the story of Wotan’s arrogant architectural folly: he is bent on having Valhalla and will pay any price for it... This recording was made at the performance held at Müpa Budapest on 13 June 2019. Az előadás megtekinthető a honlapunkon, és a YouTube-csatornánkon.

WAGNER: DIE WALKÜRE Stuart Skelton – Siegmund • Albert Pesendorfer – Hunding • Johan Reuter – Wotan Camilla Nylund – Sieglinde • Catherine Foster – Brünnhilde • Atala Schöck – Fricka Gertrúd Wittinger – Helmwige • Eszter Wierdl – Gerhilde • Gabriella Fodor – Waltraute • Beatrix Fodor – Ortlinde • Éva Várhelyi – Siegrune • Zsófia Kálnay – Rossweisse • Erika Gál – Grimgerde • Anna Kissjudit – Schwertleite Featuring: Dóra Asztalos, Zoltán Csere, Gusztáv Eller, Ádám Frigy, Nikoletta Gönczöl, Anna Gulyás, Brigitta Hortobágyi, István Horváth, Zoltán Katonka, Krisztián Kelemen, Dóra Szelőczey, Milán Újvári, Gábor Vida – dancers, Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Hartmut Schörghofer – Set designer, director • Christian Martin Fuchs †, Dr. Christian Baier – Dramaturg • Corinna Crome – Costume and puppet designer Máté Vajda – head of lighting • Szupermodern Filmstúdió Budapest – video Etelka Polgár – First assistant director • Gábor Vida – Choreography • Dóra Asztalos – Assistant to the choreographer • János Kovács – Deputy conductor • László Bartal, Gábor Bartinai, Dóra Bizják, Friedrich Suckel – Musical assistants Artistic director, conductor: Adam Fischer Die Walküre is a tragically beautiful opera about springtime, love, finding one another and recognising a shared past. As in Das Rheingold, sins are also committed. A capital crime, in fact, when two siblings violate the taboo of falling in love with each other. Oddly enough, however, we do not condemn them, but actually feel for them with all our sympathy and compassion. And the pain of seeing Siegmund has to die in the deciding duel with Hunding is enough to pierce one’s heart. This recording was made at the performance held at Müpa Budapest on 14 June 2019. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

As if everything that turns out for the worse and presages catastrophe later in Götterdämmerung is still gazing amiably at the audience. The hero without fear, the paradigm of German mythology, sets off on his path in life with unsuspecting good cheer, slays the dragon and finds his mate. WAGNER: GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG Stefan Vinke – Siegfried • Lauri Vasar – Gunther • Péter Kálmán – Alberich Albert Pesendorfer – Hagen • Catherine Foster – Brünnhilde • Polina Pasztircsák – Gutrune • Anna Larsson – Waltraute • Erika Gál – First Norn • Judit Németh – Second Norn • Polina Pasztircsák – Third Norn • Eszter Wierdl – Woglinde Gabriella Fodor – Wellgunde • Zsófia Kálnay – Flosshilde Featuring: Dóra Asztalos, Zoltán Csere, Gusztáv Eller, Regő Farkas, Ádám Frigy, Nikoletta Gönczöl, Anna Gulyás, Brigitta Hortobágyi, Zoltán Katonka, Krisztián Kelemen, Milán Újvári, Gábor Vida, Vencel Vida – dancers, Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Hungarian Radio Choir (choirmaster: Zoltán Pad), Honvéd Male Choir (choirmaster: Kálmán Strausz) Hartmut Schörghofer – Set designer, director • Christian Martin Fuchs †, Dr. Christian Baier – Dramaturg • Corinna Crome – Costume and puppet designer Máté Vajda – head of lighting • Szupermodern Filmstúdió Budapest – video Etelka Polgár – First assistant director • Gábor Vida – Choreography • Dóra Asztalos – Assistant to the choreographer • János Kovács – Deputy conductor • László Bartal, Gábor Bartinai, Dóra Bizják, Friedrich Suckel – musical assistants Artistic director, conductor: Adam Fischer The final music drama to round out The Ring of the Nibelung sees fate fulfilled and the curse striking the owner of the ring. The naive young hero proves defenceless against intrigue and trickery. The tragedy of the fate of Brünnhilde, betrayed by Siegfried while under the influence of a potion that erases his memory, is that she herself, against her will, becomes party to his devious murder. The all-consuming fire at the end of Götterdämmerung surpasses itself as a symbol, since it is not only Siegfried and Brünnhilde who die, but the entire old order, and world of the gods, are finally destroyed. The ring, however, is freed from the curse, making it possible for a new and purer world to emerge from the ashes of the old.
