A grandson’s promise kept and the magical discovery of truth When Cooper Coghlan arrives in Ireland with the cremains of his grandfather, Finn Coghlan, he has one instruction: Let my ashes blow in the wind. You’ll know the place when you come to it. I’ll be there, telling you. He also has tender memories of his grandfather’s exaggerated stories of Irish wonder and magic—stories of leprechauns and legends and the mysterious power of fate. But he does not have the story of why his grandfather left Ireland as a young man. Mesmerized by his romantic vision of Ireland, Cooper begins his search with the unknowing help of friends in America who have employed a charming, down-on-his-luck Irish actor named Sandy McAfee to con his way into Cooper’s life as his guide. Yet neither is prepared for the presence of Kathleen O’Reilly, a public relations specialist whose tour on behalf of the NewTree campaign is eerily parallel to the travels that Sandy plots in leading Cooper on his hunt for his grandfather’s ghost. And in those landmarks—Waterford, Youghal, Cork, Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, Tralee, Kenmare, Dingle—the fate of the Irish that Finn Coghlan talked of magically brings Cooper and Kathleen together. Yet, there is a truth between the two of them that not even the enchanting tale of Finn McCool and Sally Cavanaugh, or of Patrick the Believer, can resolve. For that, Cooper must use the one gift bestowed on him as a child by his grandfather—Bogmeadow’s wish.

Back to the Garden: The Goal of the Journey is the sixth book in the Journey series by beloved Southern author Jackie K. Cooper. The stories in this new book, as well as those in the past books, are based on Cooper’s memories of his life in the South. Each story emphasizes an event in Cooper’s journey through life and builds an overall picture of a man who is trying to live a life that will get him “back to the garden” where he will be eternally happy as well as at peace. The stories vary in their portrayal of this Everyman’s ability to deal with the humorous and the dramatic events we all encounter on our journeys. Readers of these stories will find a commonality with the author as they recognize their own situations in his. This sharing of life stories is what has made Cooper’s books so endearing and so popular. He writes with a sharp eye and an attuned ear in order to discover the commonplace occurrences as well as the unique situations. Cooper’s quest is to be the best person he can be and his books highlight the struggles to achieve that goal. The reader will be encouraged by this book and will be entertained by it. Life is a journey full of highs and lows and Cooper portrays them with accuracy and warmth.

...and Other Stories
is the author of six other books,
Ed Grisamore
including Once You Step in Elephant Manure You’re in the Circus Forever: The Life and Sometimes of Durwood ‘Mr. Doubletalk’ Fincher. His 2006 audiobook, Gris & That, was nominated for a Grammy Award in the “Spoken Word” category.
Stories from the recipient of the 2010 Will Rogers Humanitarian Award When he was a teenager, Ed Grisamore believed he was spending too many Saturday afternoons working in the yard. He was convinced his father would never achieve true happiness until he had moved every tree and shrub on the property at least twice. But his dad was teaching him valuable lessons. Not only did his father instill in him a strong work ethic, he set high standards for the job. “In my haste to finish, I sometimes would try to get by with the least amount of effort,’’ writes Grisamore, an award-winning columnist with the Macon Telegraph. “My holes would be too shallow or not wide enough to accommodate the tree’s roots.’’ Taking the title from his dad’s sage advice, Grisamore’s seventh book, Never Put a Ten-Dollar Tree in a Ten-Cent Hole, pays tribute to everything from fatherhood to everyday heroes, as well as good sports and Good Samaritans in a collection of more than 100 newspaper columns and essays. Grisamore takes the reader from the smallest church in America to an old-fashioned country store to the nursing home where a munchkin from the Wizard of Oz now lives and the Mississippi town where Elvis was born. There are more stories about his dad and Grisamore’s own pride as the father of three sons. He puts a human face on every story and his themes cover slices of life from faith, food, animals, music, school, travel, children, veterans and the wisdom of the generations. He also shares his thoughts about his personal journey and the delights of the writing life.

“Near the end of March, 1845, I borrowed an axe and went down to the woods by Walden Pond, nearest to where I intended to build my house, and began to cut down some tall, arrowy white pines, still in their youth, for timber. It is difficult to begin without borrowing, but perhaps it is the most generous course thus to permit your fellow-men to have an interest in your enterprise. The owner of the axe, as he released his hold on it, said that it was the apple of his eye; but I returned it sharper than I received it.” (Thoreau, Walden) One of the most beloved books in American literature, Walden is must reading for any American or anyone interested in reading great literature. But for those who go there looking for reasons Thoreau became a recluse they are sure to be disappointed. Instead, reading Walden is more of a journey to the self and how that self can live in the world. This new edition has an insightful and lyrical essay introducing the text by Sam Pickering, the inspiration for the Dead Poets Society. His essay is the most provocative piece on Walden since E. B. White.

Matthew Stallard is assistant professor of English at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, where he teaches Renaissance and Medieval Literatures.
The Biblically Annotated Edition
He is the former assistant editor of
Matthew Stallard, editor
Milton Quarterly.
An accessible reference for scholars and students of Milton John Milton (1608–1674) was arguably one of the best-read persons of his epoch. Milton’s commonplace book reveals that in addition to the thoroughly humanistic education that he received at Trinity College Cambridge (1625– 1632), he also conducted an extensively broad reading program of his own immediately after concluding his university studies, a program that included forays into nearly every branch of learning in a period that he affectionately referred to as his “studious retirement” (1632–1638). For more than 400 years, many literary critics have declared this monumental work, Paradise Lost, to be the greatest poem in the English language. Stallard contends that a full understanding of the Bible as the poem’s primary inter-text is essential to appreciating the poem in its Puritan context. John Milton, Paradise Lost: The Biblically Annotated Edition is lavishly annotated with Biblical references that demonstrates that Milton was mining a wide variety of translations including the 1540 Great Bible, the 1560 Geneva Bible, the Bishops Bible of 1568, the Douay-Rheims of H, and the revised Authorized Version of 1612. This biblically annotated edition of Paradise Lost will be useful to scholars and students of Milton alike. That a lack of familiarity with the Bible should discourage students of English literature from reading the pinnacle achievement of one of the finest poets and minds in the English language is both sad and avoidable. This edition makes Milton more accessible, comprehensible, and enjoyable for everyone. May 2011 | Poetry/Religion 6 x 9 | 600 pp. | Cloth, $60.00t | 978-0-88146-236-4 | H823 | Index

In The Throne of Psyche, Marly Youmans sweeps back and forth between what is human and what is other, binding the two together or crossing the thresholds between them. A prize-winning writer of stories and novels, she pursues tales both otherworldly and earthy with passion and formal power in this eighth book, her second collection of poetry. The title poem’s narrative governs the entire collection in its yoking of Eros to Psyche. Psyche is the young girl brought in fear to a marriage chamber that transforms into forest as “The little stars” go “shrieking through the wood” and her childhood innocence is “struck asunder.” But she is more than mortal as she passes in and out of time: the child who hears a dryad prophesy, the goddess who sits on a throne or plays “in the arms of Love / As starlight steadies in his perfect flesh,” the figure of meditation and grief who walks along the broken palace walls of home, the bold adventurer who has been to hell and drunk the blood of memory in the place where all she once loved is now shadow. Elsewhere in these poems are other potent narratives and revelations where mortal flesh slams into death and transformation: a woman dances with God, the poet speaks in the form of a dryad, a sister transforms into a fish and swims away, a doll is cast out from home and overtaken by a demon, the otherworldly infiltrates the leastmost dust, and a new mother walks with Death in his forest. Such metamorphoses and broodings on the door ajar between human and other remind us that Marly Youmans is “the best-kept secret among contemporary American writers. She writes like an angel—an angel who has learned what it is to be human” (John Wilson, Books & Culture). Abandoned quarry New and Selected Poems John Lane
A comprehensive collection of poems by one of the South’s most admired environmental writers John Lane’s creative center has always been poetry though he has become more widely know in the past decade for his environmental narratives such as Waist Deep in Black Water, Chattooga, and Circling Home. In 1995, with the publication by New Native Press of Against Information & Other Poems, Lane’s poems were hailed on the front page of Small Press Review as “a fearless celebration of the materials of words...a sign of hope...” “Against Information,” the title poem of that collection, has been mistaken for an advertisement, widely praised both nationally and internationally in reviews, scripted into an independent video, and featured on Canadian Public Radio’s popular news program As it Happens. Now, Abandoned Quarry publishes for the first time in a trade edition Lane’s poems from Quarries, As the World Around us Sleeps, Against Information & Other Poems, The Dead Father Poems, Noble Trees, and other chapbooks, broadsides, and little magazines. Mostly out of print, or simply unavailable except in rare book collections, the selection of poems in Abandoned Quarry shows the growth and fullness of spirit of one of the important Southern poets to emerge in the 1980s. The poems range in subject matter through relationships, family, nature, improvisational pieces, and even rants about the strangeness of the modern condition. Abandoned Quarry includes much of Lane’s published poetry over thirty years plus a selection of new poems.

“I find it harder and harder to know where literature ends and life begins,” Christopher Morley once said. In A Tramp’s Wallet, Sam Pickering spends six months roaming Australia and New Zealand, tramping landscapes pocked by sheep stations, mountains rip-rapped by scree, art galleries and bakeries, and always libraries, their dusty shelves troves quick with life and literature. Pickering lectures on a cruise ship, travels the Murray River on a paddle wheeler, and rides the train from Sydney to Perth across the Nullabor, the land of no trees. He describes “galores” of gardens. His eyes climb forests of trees: mottled river red gum and arthritic sandalwood. Birds more lyrical than poetry flutter through his paragraphs, magpies, rainbow lorikeets, and candied pink galahs. Kites whistle beyond margins, and gannets dive like carets through paragraphs: His mind is an odd place peopled by crowds, some folks actual, others fictional—a man born with a wooden leg and vagabonds who invite him to tour New Zealand on a fifty-year-old bus lobbying “to free marijuana.” The saunterings of one of America’s best and most popular essayists stretch the seams of A Tramp’s Wallet. Far from the hoes and saws that prune days into convention, life flourishes, and this book is weedy and rankly rich with thought and description. “Lord,” St. Odo of Cluny said on his deathbed, “I have loved the beauty of thy house.” In A Tramp’s Wallet, Sam Pickering records his love of that house, and, if truth must out, his love for a few neglected out buildings—barns and backhouses, even the ramshakled huts of thought.

The Civil War in Georgia

Parker, professor of History at Kennesaw State University, has been the department’s assistant chair since August 2009. He teaches classes in Georgia history, the history of American religion, the Gilded Age, and research methods.
Exploring Georgia’s critical role during the Civil War The Civil War was arguably the watershed event in the history of the United States, forever changing the nature of the Republic and the relationship of individuals to their government. The war ended slavery and initiated the long road toward racial equality. The United States now stands at the sesquicentennial of that event, and its citizens attempt to arrive at an understanding of what that event meant to the past, present, and future of the nation. Few states had a greater impact on the outcome of the nation’s greatest calamity than Georgia. Georgia provided 125,000 soldiers for the Confederacy as well as thousands more for the Union cause. Many of the Confederacy’s most influential military and civilian leaders hailed from the state. Georgia was vital to the Confederate war effort because of its agricultural and industrial output; the Confederacy had little hope of winning without the farms and shops of the state. Moreover, the state was critical to the Southern infrastructure because of the river and rail links that crossed it and connected the Western Confederacy to the eastern half. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the war was arguably decided in North Georgia with the Atlanta Campaign and Lincoln’s subsequent reelection. This campaign was the last forlorn hope for the Southern Republic and the Union’s greatest triumph. Despite the state’s importance to the Confederacy and the war’s ultimate outcome, not enough has been written concerning Georgia’s experience during those turbulent years. The essays in this volume attempt to redress this dearth of scholarship. They present a mosaic of events, places, and people, exploring the impact of the war on Georgia and its residents and demonstrating the importance of the state to the outcome of the Civil War. april 2011 | civil war 6 x 9 | 320 pp. | Cloth, $29.00t | 978-0-88146-240-1 | H824 | Index | Bibliography | Illustrations | Maps

In January 2009, an international group of Baptist theologians met in Cardiff, UK, for a colloquium to explore the theory and practice of Baptist hermeneutics. Drawing primarily from the British Baptist community, the group’s work was enhanced by insights from participants from the USA and Eastern Europe. Participants brought a diversity of scholarly and pastoral interests to the colloquium, and through presentation and discussion explored together the nature of Baptist hermeneutics. The resulting volume addresses five core thematic areas. The first section surveys the way in which Baptists have engaged with the Bible both in their early history and more recent past. Section two analyzes some specific examples of Baptist hermeneutics in practice, while the third section turns attention to an exploration of theoretical approaches to the hermeneutical task in Baptist contexts. The problem of how to negotiate interpretative difference within Baptist reading communities is addressed in the fourth section. Finally, concluding responses to the project from two non-Baptist theologians challenge both contributors and readers to consider the wider implications of the volume for contemporary Baptist life.

A Baptist Democracy Separating God and Caesar in the Land of the Free Lee Canipe
11
866-895-1472
Lee Canipe (Ph.D., Baylor University) is the pastor of Murfreesboro Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. He also teaches in the department of religion and philosophy at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.
Tracing the rise of Baptist democracy through Rauschenbusch, Mullins, and Truett The first decades of the 20th century were days of robust optimism in the United States. These were the confident years of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, progressive reform and high purpose. It was an age when Americans went off to war believing that they could—and would—somehow make the world safe for democracy. This period also marked the high tide of what author Lee Canipe calls “Baptist democracy”: the moral overlap between Baptist theology and American democracy that continues to shape the way Baptists in the United States understand and articulate their faith. In this book, Canipe traces the rise of Baptist democracy as reflected in the work of three prominent leaders who made their most significant contributions to Baptist life between 1900 and 1925: Walter Rauschenbusch (1861–1918), E. Y. Mullins (1860–1928), and George W. Truett (1867–1944). Celebrating the harmony between the principles of their church and the ideals of their state, these three Baptists eloquently articulated what, by the turn of the twentieth-century, had become an article of faith for many of their fellow Baptists: What American democracy is to worldly government, Baptist principles are to religion—God’s chosen way for humanity. Or, as George Truett put it in 1911, “the triumph of democracy, thank God, means the triumph of Baptists everywhere.”

Francis Johnson and the English Separatist Influence is the first thorough treatment of Francis Johnson as the central focus of an academic work. Johnson (1562–1618) was the pastor of the English Separatist Ancient Church in London and Amsterdam from 1592–1618. Once referred to as the “Bishop of Brownism” by one of his contemporaries, Johnson’s theological and practical influence on Christian traditions as diverse as the Baptists, Congregationalists, and English Independents demonstrated the wide breadth of English Separatism’s formative influence. Johnson’s quest to create a perfectly ordered, scriptural, Christian congregation led him to fiery debates with the most influential leaders of his day. A curious mix of the noble and ignoble, Francis Johnson was a man of contradictions. He could argue passionately for the proper ordering of God’s covenant community while excommunicating both his father and younger brother from the ministry of that community. An uncompromising champion of Christian moral purity, his wife’s apparel caused scandal in his congregation and his favorite Elder was accused of moral failings that encouraged ridicule from his adversaries. This very human English Separatist leader influenced a number of Christian movements in the dynamic context of early seventeenth-century Amsterdam. His example encouraged John Smyth, Johnson’s Cambridge pupil, and Smyth’s associate John Robinson, pastor to the Pilgrims, to separate from the Established Church and seek sanctuary in Amsterdam. Francis Johnson’s own journey from radical Puritan to fervent Separatists, and finally rediscovery of the importance of reconnecting with the larger Christian tradition is one that vitally speaks to our current pluralistic context. Opening ourselves to God’s presence in all world religions In a world composed of almost seven billion people, about 2.2 billion of them claim to be Christian. And while Christianity is continuing to grow at a modest rate, other religions are growing at a faster pace. Some scholars predict that Islam will overtake Christianity as the world’s largest religion by the middle of the twenty-first century. Predictions aside, religions are competing for the world stage, and in the competition, Christians seem certain that God is on their side. Christians often think and behave as though God is a Christian. This book is written to ask if that assumption is true and to foster a more open conversation about other world religions. The world has grown too small and the stakes for mankind have grown too high for any of us to engage our faith as if our understanding of God represents the only way God’s presence may be known in the world. We need, more than ever before, to develop creative communities of conversation. Conversation does not begin with talking. It begins with listening. Like Quakers of old, we need to gather in humility and honesty to face the meanness and evil that religion itself has sometimes heaped upon mankind. Godsey asserts that “We should open ourselves to new spectrums of light that may emanate from faiths foreign to our own. Our high calling is to commit ourselves to building a better pathway for creating understanding and mutual respect among people of faith throughout the world.”

Baptists have a long and rich heritage of congregational song. The hymns Baptists have sung and the books from which they have sung them have been shaping forces for the theology, worship, and piety of the denomination. Baptist authors and composers have provided songs that have made an impact not only among Baptists in America, but also across denominational and geographic lines. Congregational singing continues to a be key component of Baptist worship. The book includes many texts and tunes as illustrations of the topics being discussed and focuses on some of the contributions of Baptist authors and composers to the repertory of congregational song.

Taking significant events in Baptist history, the writers tell the amazing Baptist story of the voluntary approach to the Christian faith in popluar, nontechnical but appealing ways. The intentionally brief chapters are, for the most part, void of heavy, historical notes. Designed as an introductory study for students, laity, and parish ministers, more advanced students will also benefit from a close reading of this text. The book is arranged in chronological order so that the Baptist saga can be understood as a continuous narrative. Written to honor the important historical writing of H. Leon McBeth, the book celebrates many of the themes that occupied Professor McBeth throughout his career.

“...Photos of the stars and Atlanta before, during, and after the premiere make for an involving account.”—Bookwatch Gone With the Wind is one of the most beloved novels and movies of all time. Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel has sold millions of copies world-wide and has been translated into numerous languages. The movie, produced by David O. Selznick, is one of the most watched in cinematic history. With Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, the cast is most memorable. But with all of the books and videos, one event is usually forgotten: the premiere of the movie in Atlanta. This is now remedied with Herb Bridges’s fourth book on Gone With the Wind. From December 13 to 15, 1939, the city of Atlanta was transformed into the envy of the nation. On the brink of World War II, Atlanta welcomed Hollywood to the South to celebrate the movie that would commemorate the American Civil War and its devastating effect on the South. With Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, David O. Selznick, Olivia de Havilland, and countless others from the cast and production present, the premiere in Atlanta was the social and cinematic event of the century. This photographic essay contains photographs of the stars, of Atlanta before, during, and after the event, and of the citizens of the city who turned out not just for the movie but for receptions, the premiere ball, and other events. From movie stars to horse-drawn carriages, from a transformed theater to Gone With the Wind merchandise, this is the book that takes you back to an event often neglected in the Gone With the Wind story.

Sometimes called “Melungeons,” the earliest nonnative “Americans” to live in Appalachia were (perhaps) of Mediterranean extraction and of a Jewish or Muslim religious persuasion. For fear of discrimination— since “persons of color” were often disenfranchised and abused—the Melungeons were reticent regarding their heritage. In fact, over time, many Melungeons themselves “forgot” where they came from. Hence, today, Melungeons remain the “last lost tribe in America,” even to themselves. Once lost, but now forgotten no more. This series explores the origins, history, and culture of these once-forgotten people.
