An accessible reference for scholars and students of Milton John Milton (1608–1674) was arguably one of the best-read persons of his epoch. Milton’s commonplace book reveals that in addition to the thoroughly humanistic education that he received at Trinity College Cambridge (1625– 1632), he also conducted an extensively broad reading program of his own immediately after concluding his university studies, a program that included forays into nearly every branch of learning in a period that he affectionately referred to as his “studious retirement” (1632–1638). In The Throne of Psyche, Marly Youmans sweeps back and forth between what is human and what is other, binding the two together or crossing the thresholds between them. A prize-winning writer of stories and novels, she pursues tales both otherworldly and earthy with passion and formal power in this eighth book, her second collection of poetry. The title poem’s narrative governs the entire collection in its yoking of Eros to Psyche. Such metamorphoses and broodings on the door ajar between human and other remind us that Marly Youmans is “the best-kept secret among contemporary American writers. A comprehensive collection of poems by one of the South’s most admired environmental writers John Lane’s creative center has always been poetry though he has become more widely know in the past decade for his environmental narratives such as Waist Deep in Black Water, Chattooga, and Circling Home. In 1995, with the publication by New Native Press of Against Information & Other Poems, Lane’s poems were hailed on the front page of Small Press Review as “a fearless celebration of the materials of words...a sign of hope...” “Against Information,” the title poem of that collection, has been mistaken for an advertisement, widely praised both nationally and internationally in reviews, scripted into an independent video, and featured on Canadian Public Radio’s popular news program As it Happens. Now, Abandoned Quarry publishes for the first time in a trade edition Lane’s poems from Quarries, As the World Around us Sleeps, Against Information & Other Poems, The Dead Father Poems, Noble Trees, and other chapbooks, broadsides, and little magazines. Mostly out of print, or simply unavailable except in rare book collections, the selection of poems in Abandoned Quarry shows the growth and fullness of spirit of one of the important Southern poets to emerge in the 1980s. Parker, professor of History at Kennesaw State University, has been the department’s assistant chair since August 2009. He teaches classes in Georgia history, the history of American religion, the Gilded Age, and research methods.

Exploring Georgia’s critical role during the Civil War The Civil War was arguably the watershed event in the history of the United States, forever changing the nature of the Republic and the relationship of individuals to their government. The war ended slavery and initiated the long road toward racial equality. The United States now stands at the sesquicentennial of that event, and its citizens attempt to arrive at an understanding of what that event meant to the past, present, and future of the nation. Few states had a greater impact on the outcome of the nation’s greatest calamity than Georgia. Georgia provided 125,000 soldiers for the Confederacy as well as thousands more for the Union cause. Many of the Confederacy’s most influential military and civilian leaders hailed from the state. Georgia was vital to the Confederate war effort because of its agricultural and industrial output; the Confederacy had little hope of winning without the farms and shops of the state. Moreover, the state was critical to the Southern infrastructure because of the river and rail links that crossed it and connected the Western Confederacy to the eastern half. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the war was arguably decided in North Georgia with the Atlanta Campaign and Lincoln’s subsequent reelection. This campaign was the last forlorn hope for the Southern Republic and the Union’s greatest triumph. Despite the state’s importance to the Confederacy and the war’s ultimate outcome, not enough has been written concerning Georgia’s experience during those turbulent years. The essays in this volume attempt to redress this dearth of scholarship. In January 2009, an international group of Baptist theologians met in Cardiff, UK, for a colloquium to explore the theory and practice of Baptist hermeneutics. Drawing primarily from the British Baptist community, the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work was enhanced by insights from participants from the USA and Eastern Europe. Participants brought a diversity of scholarly and pastoral interests to the colloquium, and through presentation and discussion explored together the nature of Baptist hermeneutics. The resulting volume addresses five core thematic areas. The first section surveys the way in which Baptists have engaged with the Bible both in their early history and more recent past. Section two analyzes some specific examples of Baptist hermeneutics in practice, while the third section turns attention to an exploration of theoretical approaches to the hermeneutical task in Baptist contexts. The problem of how to negotiate interpretative difference within Baptist reading communities is addressed in the fourth section. Tracing the rise of Baptist democracy through Rauschenbusch, Mullins, and Truett The first decades of the 20th century were days of robust optimism in the United States. These were the confident years of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, progressive reform and high purpose. It was an age when Americans went off to war believing that they could—and would—somehow make the world safe for democracy. This period also marked the high tide of what author Lee Canipe calls “Baptist democracy”: the moral overlap between Baptist theology and American democracy that continues to shape the way Baptists in the United States understand and articulate their faith. In this book, Canipe traces the rise of Baptist democracy as reflected in the work of three prominent leaders who made their most significant contributions to Baptist life between 1900 and 1925: Walter Rauschenbusch (1861–1918), E. Y. Mullins (1860–1928), and George W. Truett (1867–1944). Celebrating the harmony between the principles of their church and the ideals of their state, these three Baptists eloquently articulated what, by the turn of the twentieth-century, had become an article of faith for many of their fellow Baptists: What American democracy is to worldly government, Baptist principles are to religion—God’s chosen way for humanity. Or, as George Truett put it in 1911, “the triumph of democracy, thank God, means the triumph of Baptists everywhere.”

Francis Johnson and the English Separatist Influence is the first thorough treatment of Francis Johnson as the central focus of an academic work. Johnson (1562–1618) was the pastor of the English Separatist Ancient Church in London and Amsterdam from 1592–1618. Once referred to as the “Bishop of Brownism” by one of his contemporaries, Johnson’s theological and practical influence on Christian traditions as diverse as the Baptists, Congregationalists, and English Independents demonstrated the wide breadth of English Separatism’s formative influence. Johnson’s quest to create a perfectly ordered, scriptural, Christian congregation led him to fiery debates with the most influential leaders of his day. A curious mix of the noble and ignoble, Francis Johnson was a man of contradictions. He could argue passionately for the proper ordering of God’s covenant community while excommunicating both his father and younger brother from the ministry of that community. An uncompromising champion of Christian moral purity, his wife’s apparel caused scandal in his congregation and his favorite Elder was accused of moral failings that encouraged ridicule from his adversaries. This very human English Separatist leader influenced a number of Christian movements in the dynamic context of early seventeenth-century Amsterdam. His example encouraged John Smyth, Johnson’s Cambridge pupil, and Smyth’s associate John Robinson, pastor to the Pilgrims, to separate from the Established Church and seek sanctuary in Amsterdam. Francis Johnson’s own journey from radical Puritan to fervent Separatists, and finally rediscovery of the importance of reconnecting with the larger Christian tradition is one that vitally speaks to our current pluralistic context. Sometimes called “Melungeons,” the earliest nonnative “Americans” to live in Appalachia were (perhaps) of Mediterranean extraction and of a Jewish or Muslim religious persuasion. For fear of discrimination— since “persons of color” were often disenfranchised and abused—the Melungeons were reticent regarding their heritage. In fact, over time, many Melungeons themselves “forgot” where they came from. Hence, today, Melungeons remain the “last lost tribe in America,” even to themselves.
