A Reading from the Word of God written in Genesis Chapter 25 beginning at the 19th verse.
These are the descendants of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, sister of Laban the Aramean. Isaac prayed to the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD granted his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived. The children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is to be this way, why do I live?" So she went to inquire of the LORD. And the LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples born of you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the elder shall serve the younger. When her time to give birth was at hand, there were twins in her womb. The first came out red, all his body like a hairy mantle; so they named him Esau. Afterward his brother came out, with his hand gripping Esau's heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents. Isaac loved Esau, because he was fond of game; but Rebekah loved Jacob. Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was famished. Esau said to Jacob, "Let me eat some of that red stuff, for I am famished!" (Therefore he was called Edom.) Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright. Esau said, "I !3
am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me? Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank, and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in Romans Chapter 8 beginning at the 1st verse.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law--indeed it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: "Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen! "Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and !5
understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty." The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord
From Dean Dixon (Emeritus) Greetings: The German theologian Jwrgen Moltmann wrote a good book: The Church in the power of the Spirit (2nd edition.) I propose to share some of it in these weekly columns with you the reader. The Church of Jesus Christ is a part of chapter 3 of his book; Without Christ, no Church. This simple sentence expresses an incontrovertible fact. There is only a church if and as long as Jesus of Nazareth is believed and acknowledged as the Christ of God. But the sentence also raises the question of the reciprocal relationship between the knowledge of Christ and acknowledgement of the church. The way one thinks about Christ is also the way one thinks about the church. What one believes about him and expects from him also gives interest in the church and its stamp. The doctrine of the church therefore when it concerns the foundation of the church and the conditions in which it exists is indissolubly connected with the doctrine of Jesus the Christ of God. The name the church gives itself – the Church of Jesus Christ – requires us to see Christ as the subject of his church and to bring the church’s life into alignment with him. Thus ecclesiology can only be developed from Christology; as its consequence and in correspondence with it. !6
But on the other hand the history of the Christian faith seeks its beginning in the New Testament, shows the titles given to Christ in which the churches express their faith and their hope, are historically conditioned, vary from time to time and change in substance. The image of Christ and the image of the church also always reflect the Spirit of the age. The political and economic circumstances and cultural and social conditions in which the churches are living. In intentioned faith’s consciousness is directed towards the object of faith. But functionally it is conditioned by the situation. We must distinguish between the two if we are to uncover the tensions which arise for the Christian faith from this fact. In intention all the variables, christological titles in history are related to that one fixed point which is summed up in the name of Jesus and unique history of this person. All these titles from Messiah, Son of Man, Kyrios to Logos, Example and Representative are seeking to say who this Jesus is and what he means. The truth must therefore be tested against Jesus himself and his history and it is here that their meaning has to be understood. Next week we look at Jesus and the Church.
Your friend and priest, William G. St. C. Dixon, CBE, MA (The Very Rev’d) Associate Priest

HEALTH CORNER: BY SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d ‘It’s so hot!’ This was the statement on everyone’s lips during the last week. The heat was intense and regular intake of water was necessary to prevent dehydration. This week let us consider the benefits of drinking adequate amounts of water. Balance of Body FluidsT The human body is composed of approximately 60% water. Bodily fluids are lost throughout the day from breathing, urine, stool and skin evaporation. Water loss from the body is said to be either "sensible" or "insensible". Sensible loss is measureable and you know that you have lost it e.g. urine. Insensible loss cannot be measured directly and you don't know that you have lost it e.g. respiratory loss. The minimal amount of fluid loss from the body that can occur is referred to as the obligatory water loss. These fluids must be replaced to maintain good health. •
Hydrate Muscle Cells The imbalance of fluids and electrolytes in the body can result in the onset of muscle fatigue. Think of a grape placed in the sun! Essentially the cells tend to shrivel and this adversely affects their functions. Not only muscle cells need water though, it is essential for every cell in your body. American College of Sports Medicine recommends that persons drink about 17 ounces (approx. 2 cups) of fluid about 2 hours before exercise. Fluids should be taken early and regularly during exercise to prevent dehydration.
•
Normal Bowel Movement Your colon tries to compensate for inadequate hydration by pulling water from stools. This action results in constipation . Drink plenty fluids and keep your colon happy!
•
Calorie Control Are you trying to lose or maintain your weight? There are no calories in water, so substitute that soda with water or high- water -content foods such as fruits. Drinking water isn't the only way to stay hydrated, add these high water content foods to your diet. These foods are refreshing, filled with nutrients, and naturally low in calories.
