THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in Genesis Chapter 28 beginning at the 10th verse.
Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the LORD stood beside him and said, "I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." !3
Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place--and I did not know it!” 17 And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. He called that place Bethel; but the name of the city was Luz at the first. Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in Romans Chapter 8 beginning at the 12th verse.
So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh — for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ--if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free !4
from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. He put before them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?’ He answered, 'An enemy has done this.' The slaves said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he replied, 'No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together !5
until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’" Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field. He answered, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen! The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord

From Dean Dixon (Emeritus) Greetings: Jesus and the Church If the church does not see itself as the church of society or as the German or white male church (even though it can be often enough really be described as these things in terms of its actual situation) but calls itself instead the church of Christ. Then it will also have to make Christ its starting point in its own self understanding. But in what relationship does the church stand to Christ? And according to its faith what is the real relationship of Christ to the Church? The answers that are given differ considerably. Christ’s priority over the church finds its clearest expression in question 54 of the Heidelburg catechism. There the question: what dost thou believe about the holy catholic church? It is given a surprisingly indirect answer. “That out of the whole human race the Son of God gathers, protects and upholds a community of the elect this time for eternal life through his spirit and word in unity of faith from the beginning of the world unto its end, and that I am a living member of the same and will eternally remain so.” The question about the being of the church is here answered by a confession of faith in Christ and what he does. The ecclesiastical logical question is given in Christological answer. The being of the church is described through the activity of Christ who chooses, gathers, protects and upholds. The church has its own true being in the work of Christ. That excludes an independent ontology of the church and permits mainly the account of the history of Christ’s acts. He works through the spirit and the word. (The mention of the spirit before the word is surprising in the reformation catechism but is correct in view of the breadth of the spirit and the abundance of the spirit’s gifts.) The activity of God’s Son is universal. It extends in space to the whole human race and in time to all generations from the beginning of the world to the end. The Son of God is neither the Lord of the Church nor a cultic hero. He is the Christ of the one God for the
!7
whole human race. His choosing, gathering and protective activity creates the church not as an institution for salvation or a cultic group but as a brotherhood to which the individual can profess loyalty as a living member. Ultimately the election, gathering and preservation of the church is not an end in themselves but serve eternal life as the final goal of Christ’s activity and the church created out of that activity is called. This outlook is reflected in the individual’s assurance of remaining forever in this fellowship. It is the assurance of hope found in persevering to the end. What is missing in this declaration in the catechism is the positive, worldwide aspect of Christ’s mission of the church. The whole human race only seems to be material for the election and gathering of the community of the saved. As if mankind were there for the church and not the church for mankind. We also miss the call to service for the world and finally the vision of hope for a new heaven and a new earth. The church is the body of Christ. The body and the head together are Christ. Christ is therefore only Christ in the full sense together with the Church through the growth of the church. The universe grows towards Christ so that through the growth of his body Christ ultimately becomes the Head of the universe. The church is the continuation of the Incarnation of Jesus. The relationship between Christ and the church is seen in a different light when we approach it from the end instead of the beginning. Your friend and priest, William G. St. C. Dixon, CBE, MA (The Very Rev’d) Associate Priest

HEALTH CORNER: BY SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d Recently at a popular event, there was a shocking realisation of the quantity of alcoholic products that are consumed by our young people, both male and female. There was vodka for breakfast, rum punch for mid-morning snack, brandy for lunch, beer for afternoon snack and jello shots in between each meal! When you drink alcohol, it’s absorbed into your bloodstream and affects every part of your body. In the long term, drinking too much alcohol can have serious effects on the body. Let's consider a few of these effects: Central Nervous System Alcohol can affect parts of the brain that control movement, speech, judgment, and memory. This results in the characteristic signs of drunkenness such as difficulty walking, slurred speech, memory lapses, and impulsive behaviour. Long-term heavy drinking can shrink the frontal lobes of the brain, which impairs thinking skills. Digestive System Alcohol abuse can damage the salivary glands and irritate the mouth and tongue, leading to gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. Ingestion of excessive alcohol can cause ulcers in the esophagus, acid reflux, and heartburn. Stomach ulcers and inflammation of the stomach lining can occur. The liver can be especially vulnerable because it breaks down alcohol. Long term heavy drinking can lead to the development of diseases such as liver inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis) or severe liver scarring (cirrhosis). Sexual and Reproductive System Erectile dysfunction is a common problem observed in men who use excessive alcohol. Alcohol abuse can also inhibit hormone production, affect testicular function, and cause infertility. Excessive drinking by a woman can disrupt her menstruation and can increase her risk of miscarriage, premature delivery, and stillbirth if pregnant. Immune System Heavy drinking can weaken the immune system and interfere with its defence against viruses, germs, and all types of illness. Chronic alcohol use increases the risk of developing certain cancers such mouth, esophagus, throat, liver and breast.
