Appreciating Our

READERS MORE EVERY DAY

T

is the season to put another blistery winter behind us and start looking forward to the spring and eventually summer.

Though the seasons change, one thing that never will is my love and admiration for you, this community, and everyone in it. Thank you so much to those of you who regularly read our neighborhood magazines, contribute story ideas, and send us photos of your pets, family, or major events happening around town. Also, thank you to everyone for continuing to support local small businesses. As you know, these businesses are owned by your friends and neighbors. They are the lifeblood of our economy and community, and I’m sure I speak for all of them when I say THANK YOU! Getting back to our magazines for a second — I am grateful for the time you’ve invested in reading what we write. There is so much that goes into creating content, discussing what topics we should tackle, and what matters most to our readers. We enjoy that daily grind, and we realize that without you, our efforts would be for not. As Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” So once again, Thank you! In closing, I’d like to challenge anyone reading this to take the time to thank someone else. Taking a moment to bless someone with a small gesture such as this (especially when they’re not expecting it) can transform their day.

The choices were: 1) live in the country, far from stores and neighbors and doctors and most modern conveniences or 2) bake the soles of our feet walking on the concrete sidewalks and alleyways of cities. new dental practice opened in Northlake in February 2020, and in just one year’s time, hundreds of healthy, beautiful new smiles have been created. What’s more is that many patients have discovered their forever dentist. Z Dentistry, headed by Dr. Zachary Smith (or simply, Dr. Z) is committed to practicing excellence in dentistry while also implementing relationship-based dentistry. The Z Dentistry team is such a big part of the Northlake community that patients not only receive the best in dental care, but they feel a connection with Dr. Z. It is the mission of Z Dentistry to provide each and every patient with care that is unrivaled through modern comprehensive dentistry, including implants, Invisalign, emergencies, and light sedation. Dr. Z does pretty much everything. Dr. Z earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. After graduating,

he wanted to expand his technical skills further, leading him to earn a specialty certificate in a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry program (AEGD) at the Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas. This provided him with additional training over and above graduating from dental school. And that explains Dr. Z — he’s head and shoulders above the rest. “As a new patient,” explains Dr. Z, “unless you’ve been referred by one of our amazing patients, you don’t know what sets us apart. One of my favorite parts about being a dentist is taking patients on a tour of their mouth with photographs and digital technology. Potentially, this becomes a new patient’s first time actually

seeing and understanding the conditions of their mouth.” Z Dentistry provides patients with the most up-to-date technology. Everything is digital in the office. Even before COVID-19, the team practiced all CDC recommended procedures. And they will continue to do so even after the pandemic is over. Once you visit Z Dentistry and see the results of Dr. Z’s excellent work on your beautiful smile, you’ll never visit another dentist. As Dr. Z always says, “Our favorite smiles are those from happy patients.”

S

tudio 360 Med Spa opened in Highland Village in October 2018 under the guidance of professional business entrepreneur Donna Phillips. The first expansion into new services and treatments happened less than a year later. Most people correctly equate that kind of rapid growth with success. Manager Ryndi Hodge agrees and is dedicated to keeping Studio 360 on track for more of the same. “Our spa was not planned to function according to industry norms,” Hodge stressed. “We’ve never been rigid or

inflexible, but, instead, we’re the exact

opposite. Our entire philosophy is about innovation and invention. That means

constantly educating ourselves about

what is available and how much of it we can offer to our clients. Our goal is to

provide everything they need for full, comprehensive care — a 360- degree

approach to their health and beauty.” Studio 360 takes the word “Med” in their name very seriously. Many facilities consider themselves “med” providers

because they use needles and give

injections! That is not so with Studio 360. “Absolutely not,”

said Hodge. “Our staff

includes a medical director,

a nurse practitioner, an advanced practice nurse, and estheticians.

We work hard to be an industry leader in our approach to health and beauty.”

Hodge is generous with words such as

“exciting,” “innovative,” “transformative,” “cutting-edge,” and more. And there’s

plenty of justification for that vocabulary

because that’s the line Studio 360 walks. One of the health services on the

menu is BioTE Hormone Replacement Therapy. It’s a body rejuvenating

procedure, with its potential efficacy

assessed on an individual basis after a full medical consultation.

IV Therapies provide even more options. These are mental as well as physical boosters, a carefully selected and

blended mix of vitamins and minerals www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

targeting specific areas and administered intravenously. One combination reduces headaches and stops feelings of fatigue and exhaustion. Another promotes mental clarity and focus. And yet another speeds up recovery from airborne illnesses such as the common cold. There are also clinician-administered Vitamin B-12 injections. “We are constantly learning,” said Hodge. “We go through training by various clinical teams each time we add a new procedure or process. The fact that we’re always learning and moving forward supports the sense of excitement and expectation every day when we come to work.” She added, “We also take every opportunity to brainstorm with one another. We look at new treatments, and we’re open for suggestions. One goal is to offer more opportunities for men. They can benefit from so many of our services, especially in the health and wellness areas. “We never sit still. We closed our doors for six weeks due to COVID-19, but we didn’t shut down communication with our clients. We had virtual bingo with prizes. We gave information about things to do and things to avoid in order to minimize the negative effects of quarantine. We kept our clients involved.”

Hodge is also keenly aware of how the

atmosphere within an environment affects everyone in that space. She and the

entire staff make every effort to establish and maintain a family feeling that binds together the staff with one another and with the clients. They create a fabric of

support and concern. Clients even have

the cell phone numbers of staff members. “Every day is fun, different, and

challenging,” commented Hodge.

“But every day is also the same because

of the family environment we’ve created in the studio. We want all our clients to know we’re always there for them.

That’s why they have our cell phones.

That’s why staff members come together almost daily and discuss possibilities.

We know what works and what doesn’t in this business. We also know the success of one staff member is the only way to

boost the success of everyone. And we

know success doesn’t just happen on its own. It must be created out of our own enthusiasm and excitement.”

The air at Studio 360 is electric. Nothing sits idle. A boutique full of products,

including a make-up line, was added

just nine months after the studio’s grand opening. The challenges continue, and meeting the challenges brings more

growth. Staff members push one another to new levels, reaching to be the very

best in their respective fields. It is rapidly becoming a full-service medical spa,

where the staff invests its personal energy and dedication into how their clients feel as well as look.

Studio 360 knows beauty is more than skin deep, and the people there see no reason

why you can’t be beautiful on the inside as well as the outside.

DENTAL ESTHETICS Achieved Through Healthy Methods by Dr. Matt Artho, Owner of Country Lakes Family Dental

N

ot too long ago, we all experienced an incredible act of nature in a winter storm that presented both mayhem and beauty. Though the hasty weather change brought forth the vision of a fantastic winter wonderland, it also seemed to come at a cost of comfort and even safety. The price of our health, wellness, and beauty is not all that different. It is important to look at wellness as a way to improve and maintain our health in ways that are not destructive. This is true in dentistry, as well, as we look to balance both esthetics and function. Many people think that to have a great esthetic smile, it requires extensive dental cosmetic work. In some cases, this is true. Teeth damaged by decay, erosion, or wear require “restorative” treatment that repairs them to their normal healthy state. This can be accomplished in an esthetic way that may involve reshaping and recoloring teeth to create a bright, healthy smile. However, this may require the removal of enamel or other structures to create the desired outcome.

Marcus wasn’t the only program affected by the pandemic. No one played,

including other teams right here in Denton County. Teams in the Murray Media

coverage area include Flower Mound,

Guyer, Argyle, The Colony, Hebron, Liberty Christian, Lake Dallas, Justin Northwest,

and Byron Nelson. Overall, that’s 20 teams between baseball and softball.

No one can go back and fix the past. But as everyone turns the page to the 2021

season, several area coaches are speaking on behalf of their players — all of whom

Medford agreed.

“I’d be lying if I said we didn’t get knocked to our knees by this last year,” he said.

“Not getting to complete a full season

makes us very appreciative for this season. We are thrilled to death to be competing again.”

Argyle baseball coach Ricky Griffin added his own take. And rightfully so. His team was coming off an unbeaten run to the

Class 4A state title in 2019 and had many

of the same pieces in place to defend that title before the season was ended.

“Obviously, everyone is looking forward

to getting back on the field,” Griffin said. “I felt really good about our chances last

year with the team we had, and having it cut short was disappointing. We weren’t

the only ones in that boat, though. A lot of people, especially early on, have hopes

of winning the whole thing. When it’s all taken away, it’s tough. It was strange.”

Thankfully, Denton County — and really,

the entire Dallas-Fort Worth area — is still

are perennial playoff favorites. These programs tend to reload rather than rebuild, which will make for some exciting games over the next three months. “I’ve basically got most of my varsity back except for the 12 seniors, and that was basically our pitching staff,” Sherman said. “It’s interesting getting back into the fight and feeling the emotions during the game.”

“We have about five or six who were on the field quite a bit last year, plus a few

move-ins who will help us out,” Griffin said. This is an unusual situation for us because, for one, prior to the past six or seven

years, I could have told you our entire

starting lineup. Secondly, the season was

cut short last year. What that means is that I have a lot of kids who haven’t seen a

varsity baseball game yet. We still have the talented players, though. It’s a different

team, but there are a lot of kids who we are really excited about.”

After missing out on an entire season,

that’s all you can ask for — and a chance to compete for a title.

turned COWBOYS LEGEND

f you’re going to hire a football coach, you might as well go all-out. That’s exactly what Liberty Christian School officials did, announcing on Feb. 1 that they have hired Dallas Cowboys legend and future Hall-of-Famer Jason Witten as their new coach. Witten, 38, has a long-standing connection to the Liberty community as a parent of four Liberty students. He has also hosted numerous football camps at the school.

The hire not only gives Liberty Christian a head coach with an unmatched pedigree, but it’s easily the most high-profile coaching hire during a time when many high schools across the state are taking their programs in a new direction.

“The football program will be in great hands under his leadership, and I cannot wait to see the impact that he will have on the lives of athletes.” www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

He replaces Steven Greek, who went 13-20 in three seasons at the school. “In this next chapter, it is important to me to be the best father and husband I can be while making a positive impact in the community and share the wisdom I’ve accumulated over the years to positively impact the next generation,” Witten said in a news release. School officials say they will make coach Witten available for future interviews this spring. Witten is widely regarded as one of the best tight ends in NFL history. In his 17 seasons in the league, he had 1,228 receptions — putting him fourth in league history. He is second only to Tony Gonzalez for most receptions all-time by a tight end. He has also won numerous honors, including being named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2012. He was with the Dallas Cowboys from 2003 to 2017 until he retired in 2018. He came out of retirement in 2019 to rejoin the Cowboys for one season before playing for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020. “I am very excited about Jason coming on board and joining the Liberty Christian coaching staff,” Liberty Christian athletic director Johnny Isom said in the same news release. “We have an extremely talented, hard-working group of coaches, and he will undoubtedly prove to be a wonderful addition. Jason has been a loyal parent in our community for a long time, so he already knows first-hand the excellence that Liberty brings to all areas of our school.” Isom added, “Additionally, he is a man of deep faith with a background rooted in hard work and family; something I know our athletes will benefit from witnessing. The football program will be in great hands under his leadership, and I cannot wait to see the impact that he will have on the lives of athletes.” Witten is the second member of the NFL to take on a coaching role at Liberty Christian. The Denton Record-Chronicle reported that in 2012, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton spent time as the Warriors’ sixth-grade assistant head coach and offensive coordinator while serving a year-long suspension from the NFL for the “Bountygate” scandal. “First, I want to congratulate Jason, his family, and the Cowboy organization on his pending retirement as a Cowboy,” Liberty Christian School President Blair McCullough said in the news release. “He certainly earned that honor, and I think it is a great thing for not only Jason and his family but the Cowboys and the Dallas community.” MARCH 2021 | 35 WEST | 27

Adams takes deep-seated pride in having 85 to 90-percent Americanmade inventory. According to Smith, this is based on four primary reasons. First, it helps the American economy and American craftsmen. Second, it offers superior quality. Third, the lack of dangerous chemicals makes it family safe. Fourth, there are many more options to avoid cookie-cutter designs. No furniture is sold online because pictures can be deceiving. Neither are prices posted online because of the broad choice of options. Adams stays current in styles by traveling to markets in North Carolina and Las Vegas. “We also have reps come to the store and show what they have available,” Jim said. When you think about it, that’s impressive for a town that failed after just one year!

DIFFICULT DAYS

any Texas cities were faced with frigid temperatures, power and water outages and shortages of food in the February winter storm. Sheriff Tracy Murphree states, “The Denton County Jail is like a small city. We are in charge of the well-being and care of around 1000 inmates. While other county offices are closed for the inclement weather, we are conducting business as usual.” He also added, “I am very proud of our Officers, staff and Facility Maintenance team that went above and beyond during those difficult days.” The Denton County Jail never lost power like so many others did during the winter storm. The jail has several generators that are in place should they be needed. The generators are tested regularly as

mandated by the state, to assure that they are functional. The temperature in the jail never went below the acceptable range but there were extra blankets handed out as needed for inmates. The Denton County Jail also never lost water, but because of the City of Denton’s Boil Water Notice, we were affected. We had to boil all water that was used for cooking and drinking. Igloo water coolers were purchased to be distributed throughout the jail. We also purchased 12,000 water bottles and 6000 pounds of ice.

Another challenge the jail faced was with our food supply. We rely on food deliveries and because trucks couldn’t make their routine deliveries, we were
