here is so much to talk about with our latest issue! Not only are we justifiably highlighting women of influence in our community, but the kiddos are officially back in school! If you remember — and I know you do — last year was a little iffy when it came to the start of school because of COVID-19. Some kids were in person, others were learning virtually, and the traditions of school supplies, new clothes, carpool lines, and big yellow school busses each morning looked drastically different. All opinions aside about the pandemic, I really do have a heart for working parents who stepped in as homeschoolers, the teachers who shifted lesson plans, administrators who tirelessly worked behind the scenes, coaches who kept our kids in the game, and the students who found a way to roll with the punches. Our kids deserve nothing but the best — now and well into the future. And I know they will continue to make us proud during the 2021-22 school year. We hope you enjoy the latest issue. Along with back-toschool stories, we are celebrating women in business. Many of the women I have interviewed for this issue all spoke of being true to themselves and having strong allies in their corner. They spoke on balancing work and home life — how it comes with ups and downs but to focus on the positive and find ways to do the things that make you happy. I wish you and your family the best of luck as we start the new school year!

T
hey didn’t mention that following this path successfully requires bottomless dedication, unblinking commitment, willing sacrifice, constant creativity, and a steadfast faith that the kids under your care are worth everything you do for them. Sounds like the description for a superhero, doesn’t it? There was a time when Argyle ISD Superintendent Dr. Telena Wright was known simply as Telena Burk, from the small west Texas town of Ballinger. Her mother, Juanita, landed her
Master’s degree in English when Telena was seven. Her father, Orvalee, taught vocational agriculture.
During the hot, dusty summers, one
of her duties was to drive around the
neighborhood and pick up the Hispanic children for English lessons. Telena
handed them a pair of flip flops before they headed for their class, which
was taught by Telena’s mother. They
loaded back in the car at the end of the session, put their flip flops in a box until next time, and returned home. Telena knew what the
youngsters needed to learn and
where they should be to learn it. Telena considered a career as a
pharmacist, concentrating her early
studies on math and chemistry at the University of Texas. Before long,
her genetic predisposition to education kicked
in. She finished her
undergraduate studies and then moved to

Hardin Simmons University in Abilene for her Master of Education. She achieved her Doctor of Education in 2000 at the University of North Texas, returning there part-time to teach campus law for the past seven years. “I worked at a pharmacy during high school and college,” Telena explained. “That was the influence for my early thinking but moving into education was natural for me. I became a counselor, a teacher, an assistant principal, a principal, a certified chemical dependency specialist, an assistant superintendent, and a superintendent. What that means is I have hands-on experience from just about all educational perspectives and levels. “I was given a box of chalk and two teacher’s manuals when I started. Our technology consisted of reel-toreel tape machines so we could watch educational films. Technology (computers) has been the biggest, most far-reaching, and most positive change within education. The teachers – all the people who go into education both then and now – are still the same. THEY WERE WELL-ARMED, BUT THEY HAD NO IDEA THEY WERE WALKING INTO ONE OF THE CRAZIEST MARKETS IN REAL ESTATE HISTORY.
I
t was “like at first sight” when real estate agents Amy Turner and Robin Massey met one another. “Robin was going out of town, and she asked me to help with a client,” Turner recalled. “It didn’t take long to realize we have very similar work methods, complemented by different strengths. I started in real estate in 2003 and worked only as a single agent. Robin, on the other hand, started in 2008 and worked as part of a company team.
Being able to combine both perspectives was a valuable asset.”
The two women are both married with
children. They have distinctively different

personalities, are passionate about their work, and blend together seamlessly.
“We always seem to have instincts about one another, which is why I suppose I wasn’t overly surprised when Robin asked if I’d like to start a brokerage
company with her,” Turner continued. “The question came out of the blue, but I didn’t
think very long before saying yes. I can tell you I would never have embarked on this adventure with anyone but Robin.”
One of the perks of belonging to a team, even a small one, is the availability of another pair of shoulders.
“It really helps,” Massey said. “In this case, it means I can spend time with my family and not worry about the business.”

Turner and Massey finalized the details of their Turner Massey Realty, LLC
partnership in June 2019. The office is
in Argyle, but they serve the entire DFW Metroplex with a variety of luxury, land
and ranch, investment, and single-family properties. They knew there was a lot of work in front of them since real estate is a 24-7 career that, at times, can be emotionally stressful.
“Buying a house means deciding on the place you’re going to eat and sleep and
raise your children,” Massey said. “That’s very intimate and very personal.”
Turner and Massey faced their new
venture with bright smiles, brains filled with knowledge, and hearts bursting
with hope and courage. They were wellarmed, but they had no idea they were
walking into one of the craziest markets in real estate history.
“COVID-19, quarantines, and a long list of uncertainties taught people across
the country a lot of things,” Massey said.
“We all learned life is short, and our best day is every day. We learned we can live
anywhere and still be effective at our jobs. Work boils down to a computer and an
Internet connection and Zoom. As a result, many, many people decided they want to live their best life, wherever that may be.” Zoom became a household term. Many of the Turner Massey agents came into the fold through Zoom interviews. The
company started with six agents and now

We’re agent-focused because we can do nothing without them. Basically, each agent has his or her own business. We provide a place for them to learn how to grow that business and to become the kind of agent people are excited to work with. It’s up to us to maintain that high energy level.

Massey and Turner are truly friends as well as partners. They laugh, talk, and text as late as 11:00 pm or even midnight. And, yes, they discuss the future. They joke about building a real estate empire across the south. But, maybe, it’s not a joke, since plans to expand into Florida and Arkansas within the next year are already in place.

hen passion becomes a career, you don’t just excel; you become unstoppable! This statement perfectly represents the life of Danielle Bakic, who has loved water more than anything. This 33-year-old swim instructor is the owner of Swimming Fishies, an institution that helps save hundreds of lives per year. “I have been in the water my entire life. I took lessons at a very early age and have been swimming ever since,” she said. Bakic learned to swim when she was just three. When she started participating in competitive swimming, she eventually coached her friends in high school to help them get better. That’s how her journey as an instructor commenced. This ambitious girl

ike Douglas insists that there “wasn’t much to buy” the day he purchased an under-the-radar air conditioning company from an investment group he had been working for. The year was 1981, and the fledgling company had only been open for about a year. It wasn’t very big, either, boasting a small office space and only a handful of employees.

everyone else is the family piece and their commitment to their employees. In fact, when we asked Jared’s 4-year-old son, Graham, what he wants to do when he
grows up, he confidently said, “Work with my grandpa and daddy at Advent.”

warehouse when he was 15. He’s since held every position, from working in
replacements and installs to engineering and new construction sales. Over the last few years, he’s spearheaded the
addition of new technology while also restructuring the company so that it continues to grow the right way.

The good news is that The Design House isn’t going away anytime soon. Timing is everything when preparing for a home

ennifer Homeyer likes to joke that she’s lost count of the number of times her small business should have failed. But here she and her family are, the proud and blessed owners of an ever-evolving flooring and full-service interior renovation company called The Design House. Going on 14 years in business, it’s now a staple of our community — the type of place you’d expect to find in Dallas’ Design District conveniently tucked away on Colorado Blvd., in Denton. Their customers come from far and wide and range from everyday homeowners who need design ideas to spice up their outdated kitchen, bathroom, or living room to house flippers who rely on the steady hand of a proven general contractor. “When we bought the business, it was dying,” Jennifer recalled. She and her
husband, Ty, bought the formerly-named Carpets Plus in 2008, weeks before the stock market cratered and the nation
fell into a recession. It was renamed The
Design House in 2018. “It was just me and one employee running it during those
first few years. We were unloading all the trucks, measuring … it was just a baton
handoff every single day. But there was never a choice for it not to work.”
She added, “We are here because God has given us the opportunity when we should have failed many times.”
We mentioned their longevity and the fact that they are 100% family-owned and operated. They also boast a 10,000 square foot showroom, and they are their own granite and quartz countertop fabricator. Their in-house designers have a wealth of experience, and they corner the market in reliable project managers and licensed plumbers and electricians. Essentially, they can tackle as little or as much of your project as you need — now and well into the future. “We have right at 40 employees now, and we even grew by a few during the pandemic,” Jennifer said. “So it’s not just our family that depends on this business; we have many others who depend on us, too. We are extremely proud and humbled to be where we are today.”

I
n 1984, a group of music-loving guys living in Hollywood got together and created a band. Over the next couple of years, they would have a few bandmates come and go, but it was the lineup in 1988 that we know as Warrant. That same year, the group signed with Columbia Records, now known as Sony Music, and they would go on to become one of the most popular and iconic glam, “hair metal” bands America has ever heard.
Harvest resident and Warrant guitarist Erik Turner fell in love with music and rockn-roll when he was about 13-years-old. One day, he picked up an electric guitar and never turned back. Along the way, he teamed up with Jani Lane, Jerry Dixon, Steven Sweet, and Joey Allen, combined their love of classic hard rock bands, and formed their own sound. Influences including Cheap Trick and Thin Lizzy helped shape the bands’ rock and roll. Incredible songwriter and lead singer Jani Lane contributed to the band rising to the top with his catchy lyrics and melodic tunes. “Sometimes, he would bring in a song that was almost done, or he would just have pieces of it, and we’d sit in a room in rehearsal hall and arrange it together,” Erik said. “There was a good period of seven to eight years where he was a song writing machine.”
Songs like Heaven, Down Boys, and Sometimes She Cries launched the band into stardom. But, it wasn’t until their second album and title track Cherry Pie that they became a household name. Over the past 30 years, Warrant has sold over 10 million albums around the world, and Cherry Pie has taken on a life of its own, being featured in movies, TV shows, and commercials.

t’s a typical weekday morning, and Ryan Renner is busy inside the garage of her Argyle home. Wood chips are flying left and right as she uses a miter saw to delicately craft one of her signature designs for a client. Meanwhile, her children, Pax and Lucy, are a few feet away, watching with curious eyes to see what one-of-a-kind piece mommy has put together now.
Renner admits that it’s not every day that you see a wife and mother become a woodworking artist. As creative as she’s always been, even she didn’t see this career path coming. But when you know, you know. “I’ve fallen in love with it,” she said. “I can’t wait to wake up, go into the workshop, and start creating something. It has turned into a real passion for me.” Renner’s company, Birch + Bloom, is your go-to source for geometric wooden wall art, decorative wooden trays, and one-of-a-kind statement pieces for every space. Renner uses locally sourced new and reclaimed barn wood and preserved moss to create intricate and complex custom mosaics with the type of depth, texture, and detail you’d expect from someone who has been honing their craft for decades. Ironically, Renner has only been at this for about two years — and she’s 100% self-taught. No classes. No mentors showing her what to do. No prior knowledge of how to use a miter saw, brad nailer, or table saw. Just an eye for detail, a creative outlook, and a desire to create something unique. Renner has always had an eye for creating stuff. In fact, her mother has always joked that Ryan was born with a paintbrush in her hand. She simply loves art, and she even owned a successful photography business before she and her family moved to Texas. After the move, however, Renner said she developed an itch to try something new.

“It sort of came up out of the blue. We were at this flea market, and this little piece of art caught my eye,” she said. “It was this beautiful barn wood mixed with some preserved moss, and when I saw it, I thought, ‘I can totally take this and make it my own.’ I had never done woodworking before, but I kept thinking, ‘I can do this!’” She added, “I started with a simple design, and it’s become more complex and intricate — to the point now where I have a signature look. This signature look wouldn’t be complete without the barn wood either. I love being able to salvage this wood from our area. There is just something about the unique textures, knots, and colors of aged barn wood. It’s something that can’t be replicated.
Renner’s signature style is interlocking diamonds, but she primarily works with custom orders and enjoys coming up with something that her clients genuinely enjoy. So if they have a particular design in mind or a color scheme in their home, she can do it. Her wood art comes in all shapes and sizes. During the holidays, she switches things up a bit and focuses on smaller, personal pieces that reflect the time of year and what inspires her most — nature.

I’m truly grateful to have a husband who supports me 100%. He has even let me take over the garage, which means so much. This is just the beginning. I intend to do this for the rest of my life.”

12 Mighty Orphans is the real-life story of parentless young guys during The Great Depression who went on to become national champions with the help of their football coach. The movie is based on Jim Dent’s book ‘12 Mighty Orphans’ that features actors like Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, and Luke Wilson. 12 Mighty Orphans is a powerful message of courage, hard work, and determination. When Slade watched the Young Frankenstein Musical in Dallas as a kid with the family for the first time, he strongly felt that acting belongs to him. “It might sound cliche in some sense, but to be a performer is something I always

wanted to do because I like to entertain,” Slade said. “What brought me into 12 Mighty is the connectivity I have with other people.” This Argyle High School graduate attended Cathryn Sullivan’s Acting for Film Studio in Lewisville, where he studied all aspects of movies. He is represented by Kim Dawson Acting Agency in Dallas. To further prepare himself for professional acting, Slade accepted a scholarship to California’s Chapman University, BFA Screen Acting, as an incoming freshman. For Slade, doing justice to on-screen Wheatie was a thrilling experience that came with a set of challenges. However,

the passion for acting and the football experience he gained
growing up made it a fun ride. Slade played football for seven years before finally picking acting as a career choice.
He is shown on screen alongside veteran actors Luke Wilson and Martin Sheen. Most of the young guys playing Mites, including Slade, were entirely new for shooting sets.
“Seeing Martin Sheen at work, though, that was something
else entirely. Seeing these legendary actors work together was a masterclass for a new actor like me,” he shared. “The best
part was how welcoming they were for the rest of us on set.

for the role. He also watched archive 1930-1940 football films. Slade is grateful for his family, who always supported and
cheered for what he wanted to do. His proud parents went to extreme lengths to provide their son an environment where he could work on his passion and hone his acting skills.
“I love what I do, and I am very thankful for the opportunity I have been given,” Monroe said.

he heat of the summer has definitely arrived. Summer is a season of fun – pool parties, park days, and family barbecues result in long days of playing outside in the heat and in the sun. Additionally, athletes are often preparing for the upcoming season with training camps and outdoor workouts. Spending time outside is great, as long as your child is protected by sunscreen, proper hydration, protective clothing, and frequent rest periods to avoid heat illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Signs of heat exhaustion in children may include:
It’s important to treat heat exhaustion immediately, as it can develop into heat stroke. If your child shows symptoms of heat exhaustion, you should:

Confusion, disorientation
•
Flushed, hot and usually dry skin
•
Loss of consciousness
•
Bring your child to a cool, shaded place
•
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
•
Encourage them to drink cool fluids that contain salt (like sports rehydration drinks)
•
Rapid heartbeat and breathing
•
Severe headache
•
Apply a cold wet towel or sponge to the skin
•
Seizures
•
If your child complains of painful muscle cramps in his or her legs, arms or abdomen, you can also gently stretch or massage sore muscles.

Weakness and/or dizziness
If your child is unable to drink or seems to be losing alertness, call your doctor or seek medical attention immediately. Signs/Symptoms of heat stroke in kids:

An elevated body temperature, usually less than 104˚ F
•
Cool, clammy skin

Fainting, dizziness or weakness

Heat stroke is a severe type of heat illness that occurs when a child’s body creates more heat than it can release. This results in a rapid increase in core body temperature, leading to brain damage or death if not promptly treated.

Bring your child indoors or into shade and undress him or her right away.

Begin rapid cooling by immersing him or her in a bathtub of cool/cold water.

If not available, apply cold towels over much of the body replacing them frequently

Avoid pushing fluids unless your child is conscious and alert
It is important to seek immediate emergency medical treatment. Be safe, have fun in the sun, enjoy the summer with your children. BUT be aware of the extreme dangers that can occur with high heat and dehydration.
