Appreciating Our
READERS MORE EVERY DAY
T
is the season to put another blistery winter behind us and start looking forward to the spring and eventually summer.
Though the seasons change, one thing that never will is my love and admiration for you, this community, and everyone in it. Thank you so much to those of you who regularly read our neighborhood magazines, contribute story ideas, and send us photos of your pets, family, or major events happening around town. Also, thank you to everyone for continuing to support local small businesses. As you know, these businesses are owned by your friends and neighbors. They are the lifeblood of our economy and community, and I’m sure I speak for all of them when I say THANK YOU! Getting back to our magazines for a second — I am grateful for the time you’ve invested in reading what we write. There is so much that goes into creating content, discussing what topics we should tackle, and what matters most to our readers. We enjoy that daily grind, and we realize that without you, our efforts would be for not. As Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” So once again, Thank you! In closing, I’d like to challenge anyone reading this to take the time to thank someone else. Taking a moment to bless someone with a small gesture such as this (especially when they’re not expecting it) can transform their day.

In order to become an Eagle Scout, you
have to choose and earn 21 badges out of a selection of 135 badges.
One of the steps of earning this title is
completing each individual’s Eagle Scout Project. Each project has to provide a
beneficial, long-term improvement for the
Troop’s community and must be completed
by the Scout’s 18th birthday. Once the Scout has selected their project, they must first
present it and have it approved by the Troop and the Eagle Board of Review Committee. Addison’s mom, Ginger, saw a friend’s

the amazing benefits of these majestic
animals. “Owls provide countless amounts of positive things for the environment,” Addison says. “They provide a natural form of pest control as opposed to
poison, and these houses help grow their population by replacing the loss of habitat.”
After completing his research, Addison developed a report and presented his
idea to his fellow Scouts in Troop 709, the reviewer of Eagle Scouts projects, Mark
Gmitro, and the Town Manager of Flower Mound. All of them were excited about this environmental, sustainable project.

dad, Andy, suggested the idea of installing them in parks around the Town of Flower Mound.
While installing the houses, the Troop tagged every owl house with a number so that the Town of Flower Mound and local bird enthusiasts could trace them. On the day that the houses were installed, they filmed a video of each house to let the sponsor know of the location so that they could check on them. “One sponsor, Jeri Harwell, bought an owl house in honor of her late husband, Wess Harwell, and was excited to see where it was installed,” Addison says. So far, there have been two owl sightings in the houses since they have been installed. One of the sightings happened to be in Addison’s grandparent’s backyard. “My grandpa texted me that morning that they had been eating breakfast in their backyard. He thought he saw something weird, so he took his camera and zoomed in with his lens. That’s when he saw that it was an owl in the house, and he took a picture.” Addison recalls. The benefits of these houses for the community are abundant. Not only can these houses be a year-round habitat for the owls to get out of the weather, but they can also be used as a nesting box. While these houses have provided great benefits for the birds, they have also brought a great sense of community and excitement to the Town of Flower Mound. It’s truly safe to say that Addison Eads’ Eagle Scout project will benefit our local community for many generations of owls in the years to come.
raise money for the supplies, Addison had the idea of having people sponsor an owl
house. For $40, a person could buy an owl
house or even sponsor a house in the honor or memory of someone else. Each house
would have a plaque attached, displayed
with the sponsor’s name. Addison made a
video to post on Facebook with an example of these owl houses, asking for sponsors. “They were sold out in minutes,” Addison says. 10 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | MARCH 2021

ynthia Holsclaw-Francis would love to say she has this big, dramatic story about how she became a photographer. But honestly, it’s as simple as her picking up a camera when she was 14 years old and never putting it down again. “I just instantly fell in love with it,” she said. It was apparent even from that young age that Cynthia was pretty good at taking pictures. Not just any photos, though — bold, colorful images that artfully capture precious memories that often go by so fast that they get lost forever. And for the past 13 years, Denton County families have relied on her to do exactly that for them. At Your Candid Memories Photography, Cynthia and her tag team partner, Lyndi
Augustine, have become the go-to photography tandem for everything from newborns, families, children, and maternity photos to senior photos, beautiful bridal portraits, and wedding photography. They bring excitement and teamwork to each session and are continually lauded for their ability to work with children. They are available for home or outdoor sessions, but they can just as easily host you and your family at
the YCM studio in Old Town Lewisville. Their studio has a “client closet”
chock full of newborn and maternity
props, outfits, and more to make each photograph stand out.
“Not every photographer provides
those items for their clients, but we

DENTAL ESTHETICS

ot too long ago, we all experienced an incredible act of nature in a winter storm that presented both mayhem and beauty. Though the hasty weather change brought forth the vision of a fantastic winter wonderland, it also seemed to come at a cost of comfort and even safety. The price of our health, wellness, and beauty is not all that different. It is important to look at wellness as a way to improve and maintain our health in ways that are not destructive. This is true in dentistry, as well, as we look to balance both esthetics and function. Many people think that to have a great esthetic smile, it requires extensive dental cosmetic work. In some cases, this is true. Teeth damaged by decay, erosion, or wear require “restorative” treatment that repairs them to their normal healthy state. This can be accomplished in an esthetic way that may involve reshaping and recoloring teeth to create a bright, healthy smile. However, this may require the removal of enamel or other structures to create the desired outcome.

STUDIO B

t’s impossible to measure just how much Studio B in Highland Village helps mold, shape, and develop the young people in the community. Neither is there a way to determine how much Studio B, a stalwart pillar in the area since 1999, contributes toward uniting the community and bringing families together. People of all ages look to the theater as a special space for learning, growing, building confidence, self-esteem, and leadership. And, the cherry on top of all that, is the pure joy and fun generated through the theater dynamics. There is a sense of passion running through Studio B. They are focused on creativity and solid family interactions. They stretch in all directions pertaining to theater and seek, more than anything else, to serve the members of their community. Studio B set sail in 1999 as a youth theater, teaching both theater classes and youth workshops. They faced the challenge of their first community production in 2001. The Littlest Angel was the venue, and the cast members were as young as six through adulthood.
“That may sound difficult,” said Jarrette Moore.” But we were trying to achieve something that would, hopefully, set the tone for Studio B. We envisioned the parents and grandparents of our children and youth getting on the stage and performing alongside their kiddos.” It was a brilliant idea, and it worked. What better way to encourage the development of strong family bonds than by allowing the generations to join forces in a creative adventure? As a rule, the shows chosen for production are fun and energetic. No one involved with Studio B wanted to limit the creativity of the performances, which is why, in 2006, they began to consistently direct their vision toward all things theater for all ages. Children as young as four are allowed to participate. That year was actually a watershed year since it also marked the very first adult production for cast members 18-years-old and up. The production was Nunsense, and, once again, it marked another success. Today, the oldest cast members are in their 70s. The workshops, which are plays/musicals that include performances, proved to be effective formats for Studio B. Classes, workshops, and productions are all used

as tools to create an atmosphere of creativity, imagination, collaboration, and independent thinking. Just as important is the fact that these are the same tools used to unite families and to bring communities together. One of the biggest thrills for those involved with Studio B is watching creativity develop both independently and collectively. Many students discover true talents and satisfaction in acting, musical theater, voice, dance, script development, and all-around knowledge of the stage and theater. Many also manage to nurture the necessary confidence to actually pursue these areas as a career. “We truly want it to continue working, and we’re willing to put in the effort for it to become better and better. It’s good for all of us,” Moore said. The Nellie Awards became a part of Studio B in 2010, turning into a fun way to recognize the best in several categories. Included are best actress/actor, best dancer, best silly face, best tech, best laugh, best silly face, best voice, and many more. One day, if her self-confidence can moan and groan through some growing pains, we may see Jarrette standing proudly on the stage and holding her very own Nellie. Transforming
LIVES Through
HEALTH & FITNESS by Jean Eisenmann | photos courtesy of Jesse James Fit & Outlaw Fitcamp
A
nyone living in Flower Mound – perhaps in much of North Texas – has heard of Jesse James Leyva and the amazing work he has accomplished changing peoples’ lives for the better. As founder of Jesse James Fit and Outlaw Fitcamp, Jesse has turned his own dedication to health and fitness into an ardent passion for helping others achieve their personal goals and improve their quality of life.

As the name implies, Outlaw breaks the laws of conventional fitness with compartmentalized workouts in a group fitness environment. Their ultimate goal is changing you for the better from when you first walked in the door, through personal growth, weight loss, fitness culture, and mindset. Jesse and his talented team have created a style of training that fits within a 30-minute complete workout. Unlike big-box fitness centers holding classes jammed with 24 people or more, Outlaw caps classes to 12. Each member receives personalized attention and guidance from a professional trainer while sharing an encouraging team experience. Their philosophy is based on progress, not perfection. Furthermore, Jesse
takes a family-centered approach to working out, which is why there is no charge for a spouse (partner) to work out simultaneously with a member during all personal training appointments. “Family support can make all the difference,” Jesse said. “Working out together and practicing a healthier lifestyle while encouraging each other builds a stronger bond.”
“I CAN’T BELIEVE HOW BLESSED WE ARE TO HAVE SO MANY LOYAL MEMBERS WHO REMAINED PATIENT THROUGHOUT THIS PAST YEAR.” www.LiveLocalPublications.com
“POSITIVE REACTION TO THE NEW, NOW PERMANENT, DESIGN MODEL HAS BEEN OFF THE HOOK...” When the COVID-19 pandemic struck last year, all gyms were shut down for at least nine weeks. “Opening up ‘as normal’ wouldn’t work for a health and fitness facility,” Jesse stated. It didn’t even cross his mind to give up and remain closed, leaving his members to simply wait at home. After much thought and planning, Jesse embarked on a hyper-aggressive plan to comply with the COVID-19 restrictions imposed on his business. “We have always maintained the highest sanitation protocols,” Jesse explained. “But with the pandemic, we have quadrupled our sanitation processes.” Then, after weeks of drafting a new layout, Jesse visited the Little Elm location, moved machines around the space for safe distancing, and
essentially redesigned the entire gym. He created individual 7’x11’ jail cells for safe distancing and compartmentalized them to prevent cross-contamination. Everyone – managers, franchisees, and instructors alike — loved the new model. In the span of 8 to 14 days, Jesse and his team ordered equipment, then visited all
locations to deconstruct and reconstruct the new layout. All facilities reopened to a beautiful, sleek new look that was 100% safe and COVID-19 compliant. “Positive reaction to the new, now permanent, design model has been off the hook,” Jesse stated with pride. “The changes added five more minutes to the workout routine, minimizing transitions and water breaks.” A grateful Jesse reflects, “I can’t believe how blessed we are to have so many loyal members who remained patient throughout this past year.”
Jesse is also passionate about having created an enterprise for fitness professionals to grow their careers in the industry. Outlaw Fitcamp franchises expand the client reach to increased numbers of people whose lives and health can be greatly enriched.
“The franchise is stronger than ever, and we’re experiencing incredible growth,” Jesse said. “We want to grow in Texas, so we’re offering great incentives for franchises opening throughout the state.” Adding to the excitement is important news for veteran-owned franchises. “In appreciation for their service to our country, we’re working with a foundation that helps place vets into Outlaw franchises once they leave the military,” Jesse announced. “We are looking to launch the program going into 2022.” All of these positive initiatives that define Jesse James Fit and Outlaw Fitcamp are simply Jesse James Leyva’s way of giving back. “Fourteen years ago, I discovered why I love what I do and why I was meant for this work. I’m not here to help people win trophies. I’m here to change lives,” Jesse explained. No small task, Jesse has had the support of others to turn his mission into reality. “I owe endless thanks to my wife, Tiffany, and friend, Kay Simms, who also happens to be my business partners, along with my gratitude to our investors, franchise partners, and elite trainers.” Jesse promises us more exciting news that will be revealed this summer for Jesse James Fit and Outlaw Fitcamp! Keep up with Flower Mound Town Life Magazine, Go! Pages, and Facebook for announcements.

t’s inevitable; Life is constantly changing. Each stage of life brings new adventures along with the occasional challenge. How organized and prepared you are for those challenges could have a huge impact on how well you embrace the change.
Learning to embrace change with open arms isn’t always easy. It’s human nature to want to hold on to what you have or stay in your current situation because it’s comfortable. Change, on the other hand, is uncomfortable. Sometimes, even painful. Even though we know certain things are unavoidable, we are still surprised when they happen. The big one: death. It’s one of the most emotional events any human can experience: the death of a loved one. This can be a very emotional, heavy time. Life will be a bit more manageable if everything is organized and prepared for us. Do you know who needs to be

charitable purposes. The specific purpose is to provide a last “wish” to young,
terminally ill mothers with small children. The goal is to create a memory for the
family that will last a lifetime. The road to
implementing these wishes is through the provision of services, gifts, transportation, lodging, or any other “wish” the mother
may express. The 501c3 organization caps each wish at $5,000 and secures money through fundraising and donations.
www.LiveLocalPublications.com
“That all happened just seven years ago,” Phipps said. “We really didn’t know what we were doing. We simply took an idea God dreamed up for us and started running with it. We’ve granted 200 wishes so far, and there are 200 moms on our waiting list. We have an unbelievable number of out-of-state and even international requests. Last year, in just one day, we had 30 moms fill out wish requests.” There was so much to learn for four ladies who had never done anything like this. How do you organize fundraisers? Which ones are most effective? How creative should we be? What are the rules and regulations that must be followed to avoid violating the 501c3 requirements? How do we get the best deals, and how do we find sponsors? It was akin to being caught in a tornado, but they knew they needed to hang on for the ride.
“Most of the wishes are for trips, with Disney World and Hawaii being the most popular,” Phipps said. “Some wish for a backyard makeover with a swimming pool so the family can make memories at home.
We’ve even had wishes for movie rooms. “Allyson, our first mom, and our original inspiration, kept a blog for her three sons called 3 Little Cowboys. She wished for it to be published. Allyson is gone, but the book is still available at www.AllysWish.org.” The date for the annual Boots & Blessings Gala is April 22. It is the organization’s premier fundraiser and will be held at an open-air venue at Marty B’s. The 5k run is the second fund-raising event. Also, in 2020, Alliance Energy presented a $100,000 check to Phipps after Ally’s Wish won their non-profit contest. Ally’s Wish was named Non-profit of the Year in 2019 at the Unity in Communities luncheon hosted by the Lewisville Chamber of Commerce, Flower Mound Chamber, and the Highland Village Business Association. And the future? “I dream big,” Phipps said with a chuckle. “Do we want to grow? We’re already growing. We just have to keep up. That’s only one of the places where God comes in – again and again.”

he Facebook group Flower Mound People Helping People was created by local resident Tracy Black at the start of the pandemic last spring to help aid community members in need during the newly unprecedented times. As the group evolved over the months, they expanded their volunteerism to include monitoring elderly residents who needed groceries to donating hot meals and snacks to frontline workers. During this past winter storm, Tracy and volunteers from the Facebook group came together to help healthcare workers get to and from their shifts at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound. The hospital’s Director of Marketing, Pam Petrides, stated that without Tracy and his group of volunteers, the hospital would have faced a staffing shortage. “I can’t tell you how many text messages Tracy and I exchanged in order to help coordinate rides for our frontline workers who keep
our hospital staffed around the clock.” Many of the healthcare professionals live in neighboring cities. Therefore, the volunteers drove anywhere from Fort Worth to Denton in order to get hospital employees to and from work safely. “We were so fortunate,” Pam said. “We did not have any staffing issues because of Tracy’s group. They kept our hospital workers safe. They kept the hospital staffed, and as a result, the patients here were able to continue receiving the care and treatment required.” At the beginning of the pandemic, Tracy had asked Pam if he could help coordinate www.LiveLocalPublications.com
hot meals for the healthcare workers. “One of our group’s first activities was related to Flower Mound Presby,” stated Tracy. As their efforts continued, they began including the Flower Mound, Lewisville, and Corinth police departments, as well as local area fire departments. As the group continued to expand its efforts, it began taking up food and snack donations to put together snack packs for frontline workers. “People and businesses would put their donations outside their front doors, and Tracy and his group of volunteers would pick them up before putting together pre-packaged snack packs for the nurses, doctors, and staff,” Pam states. He also organized a number of drive-thru parades for the community to come together in the hospital parking lot to show their support and appreciation for the essential workers. This past June, the group collected items for food pantries in Flower Mound and Grapevine. “Things moved back toward normal once people started going back to work and getting businesses back up, so there were no specific campaigns for us to do until now,” Tracy said. “This campaign is over now, but the stories we heard, and the memories we made getting to know some of the awesome folks at Flower Mound Presby, will stay with us for a long time!”

he ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui (pronounced “fung shway”), which literally means wind and water, has been widely used in Asia for thousands of years. Across the U.S. and around the world, thousands of people are discovering how simple changes in the selection, color, and arrangement of their furnishings can help improve the energy of chi within their homes. Here are a few tips for utilizing color to appeal to different cultures and communities:
FENG SHUI BELIEFS – COLORS
• Purple – short-lived happiness – Japan
• Yellow represents good health
• Purple – Death – Brazil & Mexico
• Red brings fame and fortune
• Brown – Funerals – Persia
• White increases the chance of offspring
• Blue – Death - Syria
• Black improves career • Blue helps gain knowledge • Green brings family happiness • Purple attracts wealth COLORS – OTHER CULTURES • Red – Good luck – Asian • Green – Lucky – Hindu • Blue – Lucky – Moslem • Red – Mourning – Ghana • Black – Mourning – Western cultures • White – Weddings – Western cultures • White – Mourning – China • Black – Weddings – China
EARTH – Settling, stable energy associated with browns and beiges and a higher vibration color of yellow. Flat, square shapes, stones, brick, and ceramic objects and vases. METAL – Contracting, introverted energy associated with white, gray, and metallic colors (silver, gold, copper, and bronze); round, half-round, and oval shapes; coins, metal, rod iron objects. WATER – Flowing energy associated with blacks and blues; smoothly irregular shapes; liquids of all kinds and mirrors. By adjusting the balance of the elements in a space using the colors, materials, and shapes of objects associated with the element, you can adjust the quality of the energy.
UNDERSTANDING THE FIVE FENG SHUI ELEMENTS The five elements of Feng Shui — wood, fire, earth, metal, and water — define five different qualities of chi. Each element is associated with specific colors, shapes, and types of objects. Below are the five elements and their associations, which you can easily connect to decorative elements: WOOD – Upward, growing energy associated with all shades of green, columns, vertical stripes, and any kind of plant or tree. FIRE – Excited energy associated with reds and oranges; triangular and jaggedly irregular shapes, flames (like candles or a fireplace), lights, and electricity.

turned COWBOYS LEGEND
FOOTBALL COACH

f you’re going to hire a football coach, you might as well go all-out. That’s exactly what Liberty Christian School officials did, announcing on Feb. 1 that they have hired Dallas Cowboys legend and future Hall-of-Famer Jason Witten as their new coach. Witten, 38, has a long-standing connection to the Liberty community as a parent of four Liberty students. He has also hosted numerous football camps at the school.

The hire not only gives Liberty Christian a head coach with an unmatched pedigree, but it’s easily the most high-profile coaching hire during a time when many high schools across the state are taking their programs in a new direction.
“The football program will be in great hands under his leadership, and I cannot wait to see the impact that he will have on the lives of athletes.” www.LiveLocalPublications.com
He replaces Steven Greek, who went 13-20 in three seasons at the school. “In this next chapter, it is important to me to be the best father and husband I can be while making a positive impact in the community and share the wisdom I’ve accumulated over the years to positively impact the next generation,” Witten said in a news release. School officials say they will make coach Witten available for future interviews this spring. Witten is widely regarded as one of the best tight ends in NFL history. In his 17 seasons in the league, he had 1,228 receptions — putting him fourth in league history. He is second only to Tony Gonzalez for most receptions all-time by a tight end. He has also won numerous honors, including being named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2012. He was with the Dallas Cowboys from 2003 to 2017 until he retired in 2018. He came out of retirement in 2019 to rejoin the Cowboys for one season before playing for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020. “I am very excited about Jason coming on board and joining the Liberty Christian coaching staff,” Liberty Christian athletic director Johnny Isom said in the same news release. “We have an extremely talented, hard-working group of coaches, and he will undoubtedly prove to be a wonderful addition. Jason has been a loyal parent in our community for a long time, so he already knows first-hand the excellence that Liberty brings to all areas of our school.” Isom added, “Additionally, he is a man of deep faith with a background rooted in hard work and family; something I know our athletes will benefit from witnessing. The football program will be in great hands under his leadership, and I cannot wait to see the impact that he will have on the lives of athletes.” Witten is the second member of the NFL to take on a coaching role at Liberty Christian. The Denton Record-Chronicle reported that in 2012, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton spent time as the Warriors’ sixth-grade assistant head coach and offensive coordinator while serving a year-long suspension from the NFL for the “Bountygate” scandal. “First, I want to congratulate Jason, his family, and the Cowboy organization on his pending retirement as a Cowboy,” Liberty Christian School President Blair McCullough said in the news release. “He certainly earned that honor, and I think it is a great thing for not only Jason and his family but the Cowboys and the Dallas community.” MARCH 2021 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | 45

lower Mound’s Nicole Luster-Pacheco is a wife, mother, businesswoman, community supporter — and she works under the big top. Nicole is the driving force behind Big Top Cake Pops, a home-based bakery business generating the most awesome and delicious cake pops you will ever eat – or ever see. Each piece is such a work of art that you’ll be tempted to put them on display in your home!
Keep in mind that Nicole handles all the baking and decorating herself and has it down to a science. One of her latest orders had her in the kitchen for a solid 42 hours.
Big Top Cake Pops creates delectable cake pops that can be customized for every occasion or theme you can think of or for no specific occasion at all. Whatever your pop of choice might be, Nicole will create it. She is passionate about her creations, crafting, and incredibly detailed designs that range from beautiful and blingy to cute and funny. Her cake pop gallery is like viewing an artist’s portfolio. And they taste fantastic.
Nicole’s ability to work so expertly on such little canvases is a treat for the eye as well as the palate. After seven years, she’s still having fun doing it! Now that’s a pop star.
It all started as a hobby in 2011, when she was gifted with some cake pops and fell in love. Choosing to learn the craft through practice, not a baking class, she discovered an artistic talent she never knew she had. Little did Nicole know that she was preparing for a burgeoning career. That is, until 2014. “After my daughter was born, I decided to be a stay-at-home mom when my husband suggested selling the pops,” Nicole explained. “I gave it a fun name that ‘pops’ and began building a business.” The treats are made with the finest ingredients and baked in small batches throughout the day to ensure freshness. Nothing is ever frozen. Nicole assembles her cake pops using cake that is crumbled and mixed with frosting or icing, then coated in chocolate. This ensures you will taste both cake and frosting with every bite, not a solid ball of dry cake covered in fondant. “Every cake pop I create is crafted with love,” Nicole confessed. “My reward comes from my customers complimenting me and how delighted they are.”
As if the pops weren’t enough, the shop also crafts artisan chocolate-covered Oreos, Rice Krispies treats, and gourmet pretzels, all decorated with the same unique flair as the pops. Nicole often supports the community by contributing her treats to hospitals, police and fire departments, PTAs, and church auctions. She also supports local womenowned businesses by creating pop-up shops within their establishments. Customers are loyal to her gourmet treasures. Some even drive an hour to satisfy their sweet tooth. “My best form of advertising for Big Top Cake Pops is through word-ofmouth referrals from satisfied customers,” Nicole said. And those customers sometimes become life-long supporters. Nicole explained, “I’ve had the pleasure of creating cake pops for customers’ weddings, then their baby showers, and even their children’s birthdays!”

Couples That Play Together
STAY TOGETHER by Kelly Murray
E
very couple ought to incorporate some fun activities into their relationship. Added fun tends to keep relationships alive and vibrant. It eliminates some of the dull routines that can creep into households and family life. It is not uncommon for couples to lose their sense of loving spontaneity. This can happen when couples lose themselves in their daily duties and family obligations. Most couples don’t set out to neglect their relationship. They just get lost in the shuffle and forget to make each other and their relationship a top priority. If a couple loses their fun time, they must acknowledge it and get it back as fast as they can because fun activities serve as valuable reminders of romantic feelings. Keep in mind, added fun does not discriminate in terms of age. Every age can enjoy some fun outlets because it rejuvenates everyone.
1. Take a class together. It may require a couple to find a common interest. A couples class can be done online or outside. Perhaps a craft class will stimulate the brain while incorporating a new hobby into your life. 2. Take turns making a special dinner every week. Give each other a break and incorporate “special dinner night” into your lives. There’s no need to be a gourmet chef — surprise each other and set aside an assigned cooking night. Allow the inner chef to come out and create a fantastic dinner for your other half. Show off a little cooking talent, and see what you can come up with.
50 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | MARCH 2021
3. Have a special dining out night. Find a restaurant that both of you enjoy. Set out one night a week or month and enjoy your special hot spot meant for two. Incorporate the restaurant outing into your couple’s lifestyle. A romantic meal for two will keep communication cozy and free as it connects you to each other in extraordinary ways. 4. Listen to an audiobook before bed. This is a stimulating and fun way to connect with each other. This will stir up some fun conversations as it fills your head with the magic of new places and stories. This can be for those on a tight budget because audiobooks can be listened to on YouTube for free.
5. Schedule a walk night. Take a short stroll and hold hands as you gradually increase the distance. Set aside a scheduled walk and tell each other your wildest dreams as you gracefully stroll together. Be sure to include some big laughs and funny stories. 6. Start an exercise routine. If you enjoy dance, create a dance and exercise routine together. This can be a private endeavor for two. Make up your own moves, and add it to the schedule. 7. Start a household project. Allow a little couple’s creativity to take over and plan your own project. Remember, projects can be small or large. Anything goes with the couples’ household project. 8. Enjoy an ice cream treat special. Build your own ice cream treat for two, and don’t worry about the calories. 9. Enjoy a couples massage. Find a quality spa, and sign up for a couples massage special. 10. Engage in a few card games for two. Invest in a deck of cards, and enjoy an evening of cards with your other half.

THE BENEFITS OF FUN ACTIVITIES
All couples benefit from added fun. They don’t have time to worry about the state of the world when they are enjoying fun moments together. They tend to alleviate depression and anxiety when they schedule some fun activities into their lives. Studies and research have shown that couples who play together really do stay together.

Sometimes You Just Need
A GOOD
ROM COM by Kelly Murray
R
omantic comedies: Love them or tolerate them—but let’s be honest, you can’t hate a rom-com. They’re always good for a cozy evening, especially when the weather is so chilly. And it never hurts that they are sprinkled with a good life lesson or two. Not to mention, they pair perfectly with a bottle of wine or just about any kind of snack. (I personally like to pop some popcorn and mix a few peanut M&Ms in. But you do you). For the next time you are needing a little pick me up or something other than vodka to warm your insides, our team would like to share with you our favorites to help you out. -Kelly Murray

SWEET HOME ALABAMA - Kelly Murray and Steve Gamel
What’s not to love about a BIG CITY girl coming back to her small southern hometown and falling in love with it and her first love all over again. It stars Reese Witherspoon as Melanie, a fashion designer in NYC, who is forced to return to her Alabama roots – a place she thought that she was too good for….but might be exactly what she needs.
PRETTY WOMAN - Michelle Daughtery
This one is a MUST. Pretty Woman is a 1990s American romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. The film’s story centers on down-onher-luck Vivian Ward, who is hired by Edward Lewis, a wealthy businessman, to be his escort. The story follows their blossoming relationship over the course of her week-long stay with him. The film’s title is based on “Oh, Pretty Woman,” written and sung by Roy Orbison.
ARTHUR
- Toribia Alonzo This 1981 film stars Dudley Moore as Arthur Bach, a drunken New York billionaire who Is on the brink of an arranged marriage to a wealthy heiress but ends up falling for a poor waitress from Queens, Linda Marolla, played by Liza Minnelli.
THE PRINCESS BRIDE - Jana Melton and Steve Gamel
I don’t watch a lot of “RomComs,” but when I do, my all-time favorite love story is Princess Bride. I remember when I was a kid, sick at home, that this was a movie my mom would go to Blockbuster’s and rent for me (Princess Bride and The Outsiders, oooo Ponyboy ) while I stayed home. Anyway, it’s about a beautiful princess who is supposed to marry a dreadful prince. But the adventure comes when she is rescued by her one true love. It’s a must-see and has lots of humor and love! “ASSSSSSSS YOUUUUU WISSSHHHH.”
HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS - Jaci McCollum
Kate Hudson (Andie) is an up-and-coming journalist for a big city magazine who has been given the task of writing an article about How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. She is dating Matthew McConaughey (Ben) and gathering all the storylines and info for her article. Meanwhile “Ben’s buddies have made a bet with him about how to lose her! After spending so much time together and growing close, they both find out what the other is up to and the rest of the love story unfolds from there!
THE PROPOSAL - Lizzy Hoffman
I love comedy and crazy romantic movies. This movie is a good example, very funny. A pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada. AND OF COURSE, THEY FALL IN LOVE :) TA DA!!!

any Texas cities were faced with frigid temperatures, power and water outages and shortages of food in the February winter storm. Sheriff Tracy Murphree states, “The Denton County Jail is like a small city. We are in charge of the well-being and care of around 1000 inmates. While other county offices are closed for the inclement weather, we are conducting business as usual.” He also added, “I am very proud of our Officers, staff and Facility Maintenance team that went above and beyond during those difficult days.” The Denton County Jail never lost power like so many others did during the winter storm. The jail has several generators that are in place should they be needed. The generators are tested regularly as
mandated by the state, to assure that they are functional. The temperature in the jail never went below the acceptable range but there were extra blankets handed out as needed for inmates. The Denton County Jail also never lost water, but because of the City of Denton’s Boil Water Notice, we were affected. We had to boil all water that was used for cooking and drinking. Igloo water coolers were purchased to be distributed throughout the jail. We also purchased 12,000 water bottles and 6000 pounds of ice.
Another challenge the jail faced was with our food supply. We rely on food deliveries and because trucks couldn’t make their routine deliveries, we were
