Eagle Scout OWL PROJECT I

While installing the houses, the Troop tagged every owl house with a number so that the Town of Flower Mound and local bird enthusiasts could trace them. On the day that the houses were installed, they filmed a video of each house to let the sponsor know of the location so that they could check on them. “One sponsor, Jeri Harwell, bought an owl house in honor of her late husband, Wess Harwell, and was excited to see where it was installed,” Addison says. So far, there have been two owl sightings in the houses since they have been installed. One of the sightings happened to be in Addison’s grandparent’s backyard. “My grandpa texted me that morning that they had been eating breakfast in their backyard. He thought he saw something weird, so he took his camera and zoomed in with his lens. That’s when he saw that it was an owl in the house, and he took a picture.” Addison recalls. The benefits of these houses for the community are abundant. Not only can these houses be a year-round habitat for the owls to get out of the weather, but they can also be used as a nesting box. While these houses have provided great benefits for the birds, they have also brought a great sense of community and excitement to the Town of Flower Mound. It’s truly safe to say that Addison Eads’ Eagle Scout project will benefit our local community for many generations of owls in the years to come.

would have a plaque attached, displayed

t’s impossible to measure just how much Studio B in Highland Village helps mold, shape, and develop the young people in the community. Neither is there a way to determine how much Studio B, a stalwart pillar in the area since 1999, contributes toward uniting the community and bringing families together. People of all ages look to the theater as a special space for learning, growing, building confidence, self-esteem, and leadership. And, the cherry on top of all that, is the pure joy and fun generated through the theater dynamics. There is a sense of passion running through Studio B. They are focused on creativity and solid family interactions. They stretch in all directions pertaining to theater and seek, more than anything else, to serve the members of their community. Studio B set sail in 1999 as a youth theater, teaching both theater classes and youth workshops. They faced the challenge of their first community production in 2001. The Littlest Angel was the venue, and the cast members were as young as six through adulthood.
“That may sound difficult,” said Jarrette Moore.” But we were trying to achieve something that would, hopefully, set the tone for Studio B. We envisioned the parents and grandparents of our children and youth getting on the stage and performing alongside their kiddos.” It was a brilliant idea, and it worked. What better way to encourage the development of strong family bonds than by allowing the generations to join forces in a creative adventure? As a rule, the shows chosen for production are fun and energetic. No one involved with Studio B wanted to limit the creativity of the performances, which is why, in 2006, they began to consistently direct their vision toward all things theater for all ages. Children as young as four are allowed to participate. That year was actually a watershed year since it also marked the very first adult production for cast members 18-years-old and up. The production was Nunsense, and, once again, it marked another success. Today, the oldest cast members are in their 70s. The workshops, which are plays/musicals that include performances, proved to be effective formats for Studio B. Classes, workshops, and productions are all used

as tools to create an atmosphere of creativity, imagination, collaboration, and independent thinking. Just as important is the fact that these are the same tools used to unite families and to bring communities together. One of the biggest thrills for those involved with Studio B is watching creativity develop both independently and collectively. Many students discover true talents and satisfaction in acting, musical theater, voice, dance, script development, and all-around knowledge of the stage and theater. Many also manage to nurture the necessary confidence to actually pursue these areas as a career. “We truly want it to continue working, and we’re willing to put in the effort for it to become better and better. It’s good for all of us,” Moore said. The Nellie Awards became a part of Studio B in 2010, turning into a fun way to recognize the best in several categories. Included are best actress/actor, best dancer, best silly face, best tech, best laugh, best silly face, best voice, and many more. One day, if her self-confidence can moan and groan through some growing pains, we may see Jarrette standing proudly on the stage and holding her very own Nellie. It didn’t even cross his mind to give up and remain closed, leaving his members to simply wait at home. After much thought and planning, Jesse embarked on a hyper-aggressive plan to comply with the COVID-19 restrictions imposed on his business. “We have always maintained the highest sanitation protocols,” Jesse explained. “But with the pandemic, we have quadrupled our sanitation processes.” Then, after weeks of drafting a new layout, Jesse visited the Little Elm location, moved machines around the space for safe distancing, and
essentially redesigned the entire gym. He created individual 7’x11’ jail cells for safe distancing and compartmentalized them to prevent cross-contamination. Everyone – managers, franchisees, and instructors alike — loved the new model. In the span of 8 to 14 days, Jesse and his team ordered equipment, then visited all
locations to deconstruct and reconstruct the new layout. All facilities reopened to a beautiful, sleek new look that was 100% safe and COVID-19 compliant. “Positive reaction to the new, now permanent, design model has been off the hook,” Jesse stated with pride. “The changes added five more minutes to the workout routine, minimizing transitions and water breaks.” A grateful Jesse reflects, “I can’t believe how blessed we are to have so many loyal members who remained patient throughout this past year.”
Jesse is also passionate about having created an enterprise for fitness professionals to grow their careers in the industry. Outlaw Fitcamp franchises expand the client reach to increased numbers of people whose lives and health can be greatly enriched.

“That all happened just seven years ago,” Phipps said. “We really didn’t know what we were doing. We simply took an idea God dreamed up for us and started running with it. We’ve granted 200 wishes so far, and there are 200 moms on our waiting list. We have an unbelievable number of out-of-state and even international requests. Last year, in just one day, we had 30 moms fill out wish requests.” There was so much to learn for four ladies who had never done anything like this. How do you organize fundraisers? Which ones are most effective? How creative should we be? What are the rules and regulations that must be followed to avoid violating the 501c3 requirements? How do we get the best deals, and how do we find sponsors? It was akin to being caught in a tornado, but they knew they needed to hang on for the ride.
“Most of the wishes are for trips, with Disney World and Hawaii being the most popular,” Phipps said. “Some wish for a backyard makeover with a swimming pool so the family can make memories at home.
We’ve even had wishes for movie rooms. “Allyson, our first mom, and our original inspiration, kept a blog for her three sons called 3 Little Cowboys. She wished for it to be published. Allyson is gone, but the book is still available at www.AllysWish.org.” The date for the annual Boots & Blessings Gala is April 22. It is the organization’s premier fundraiser and will be held at an open-air venue at Marty B’s. The 5k run is the second fund-raising event. Also, in 2020, Alliance Energy presented a $100,000 check to Phipps after Ally’s Wish won their non-profit contest. Ally’s Wish was named Non-profit of the Year in 2019 at the Unity in Communities luncheon hosted by the Lewisville Chamber of Commerce, Flower Mound Chamber, and the Highland Village Business Association. And the future? “I dream big,” Phipps said with a chuckle. “Do we want to grow? We’re already growing. We just have to keep up. That’s only one of the places where God comes in – again and again.”

equipment for a couple of weeks before things got too crazy,” Chris states.

he Facebook group Flower Mound People Helping People was created by local resident Tracy Black at the start of the pandemic last spring to help aid community members in need during the newly unprecedented times. As the group evolved over the months, they expanded their volunteerism to include monitoring elderly residents who needed groceries to donating hot meals and snacks to frontline workers. During this past winter storm, Tracy and volunteers from the Facebook group came together to help healthcare workers get to and from their shifts at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound. Tracy and his wife have lived in Flower Mound for over 26 years. Before relocating to Texas, they lived in Minneapolis and learned to drive and

safely navigate through the snow and wintry conditions. The hospital’s Director of Marketing, Pam Petrides, stated that without Tracy and his group of volunteers, the hospital would have faced a staffing shortage. “I can’t tell you how many text messages Tracy and I exchanged in order to help coordinate rides for our frontline workers who keep
our hospital staffed around the clock.” Many of the healthcare professionals live in neighboring cities. Therefore, the volunteers drove anywhere from Fort Worth to Denton in order to get hospital employees to and from work safely. “We were so fortunate,” Pam said. “We did not have any staffing issues because of Tracy’s group. They kept our hospital workers safe. They kept the hospital staffed, and as a result, the patients here were able to continue receiving the care and treatment required.” At the beginning of the pandemic, Tracy had asked Pam if he could help coordinate www.LiveLocalPublications.com
hot meals for the healthcare workers. “One of our group’s first activities was related to Flower Mound Presby,” stated Tracy. As their efforts continued, they began including the Flower Mound, Lewisville, and Corinth police departments, as well as local area fire departments. As the group continued to expand its efforts, it began taking up food and snack donations to put together snack packs for frontline workers. “People and businesses would put their donations outside their front doors, and Tracy and his group of volunteers would pick them up before putting together pre-packaged snack packs for the nurses, doctors, and staff,” Pam states. He also organized a number of drive-thru parades for the community to come together in the hospital parking lot to show their support and appreciation for the essential workers. This past June, the group collected items for food pantries in Flower Mound and Grapevine. “Things moved back toward normal once people started going back to work and getting businesses back up, so there were no specific campaigns for us to do until now,” Tracy said. “This campaign is over now, but the stories we heard, and the memories we made getting to know some of the awesome folks at Flower Mound Presby, will stay with us for a long time!”

f you’re going to hire a football coach, you might as well go all-out. That’s exactly what Liberty Christian School officials did, announcing on Feb. 1 that they have hired Dallas Cowboys legend and future Hall-of-Famer Jason Witten as their new coach. Witten, 38, has a long-standing connection to the Liberty community as a parent of four Liberty students. He has also hosted numerous football camps at the school.

The hire not only gives Liberty Christian a head coach with an unmatched pedigree, but it’s easily the most high-profile coaching hire during a time when many high schools across the state are taking their programs in a new direction.

He replaces Steven Greek, who went 13-20 in three seasons at the school. “In this next chapter, it is important to me to be the best father and husband I can be while making a positive impact in the community and share the wisdom I’ve accumulated over the years to positively impact the next generation,” Witten said in a news release. School officials say they will make coach Witten available for future interviews this spring. Witten is widely regarded as one of the best tight ends in NFL history. In his 17 seasons in the league, he had 1,228 receptions — putting him fourth in league history. He is second only to Tony Gonzalez for most receptions all-time by a tight end. He has also won numerous honors, including being named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2012. He was with the Dallas Cowboys from 2003 to 2017 until he retired in 2018. He came out of retirement in 2019 to rejoin the Cowboys for one season before playing for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020. “I am very excited about Jason coming on board and joining the Liberty Christian coaching staff,” Liberty Christian athletic director Johnny Isom said in the same news release. “We have an extremely talented, hard-working group of coaches, and he will undoubtedly prove to be a wonderful addition. Jason has been a loyal parent in our community for a long time, so he already knows first-hand the excellence that Liberty brings to all areas of our school.” Isom added, “Additionally, he is a man of deep faith with a background rooted in hard work and family; something I know our athletes will benefit from witnessing. The football program will be in great hands under his leadership, and I cannot wait to see the impact that he will have on the lives of athletes.” Witten is the second member of the NFL to take on a coaching role at Liberty Christian. The Denton Record-Chronicle reported that in 2012, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton spent time as the Warriors’ sixth-grade assistant head coach and offensive coordinator while serving a year-long suspension from the NFL for the “Bountygate” scandal. “First, I want to congratulate Jason, his family, and the Cowboy organization on his pending retirement as a Cowboy,” Liberty Christian School President Blair McCullough said in the news release. “He certainly earned that honor, and I think it is a great thing for not only Jason and his family but the Cowboys and the Dallas community.” MARCH 2021 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | 45

very couple ought to incorporate some fun activities into their relationship. Added fun tends to keep relationships alive and vibrant. It eliminates some of the dull routines that can creep into households and family life. It is not uncommon for couples to lose their sense of loving spontaneity. This can happen when couples lose themselves in their daily duties and family obligations. Most couples don’t set out to neglect their relationship. They just get lost in the shuffle and forget to make each other and their relationship a top priority. If a couple loses their fun time, they must acknowledge it and get it back as fast as they can because fun activities serve as valuable reminders of romantic feelings. Keep in mind, added fun does not discriminate in terms of age. Every age can enjoy some fun outlets because it rejuvenates everyone.
1. Take a class together. It may require a couple to find a common interest. A couples class can be done online or outside. Perhaps a craft class will stimulate the brain while incorporating a new hobby into your life. 2. Take turns making a special dinner every week. Give each other a break and incorporate “special dinner night” into your lives. There’s no need to be a gourmet chef — surprise each other and set aside an assigned cooking night. Allow the inner chef to come out and create a fantastic dinner for your other half. Show off a little cooking talent, and see what you can come up with.

Listen to an audiobook before bed. This is a stimulating and fun way to connect with each other. This will stir up some fun conversations as it fills your head with the magic of new places and stories. This can be for those on a tight budget because audiobooks can be listened to on YouTube for free.
5. Schedule a walk night. Take a short stroll and hold hands as you gradually increase the distance. Set aside a scheduled walk and tell each other your wildest dreams as you gracefully stroll together. Be sure to include some big laughs and funny stories. 6. Start an exercise routine. If you enjoy dance, create a dance and exercise routine together. This can be a private endeavor for two. Make up your own moves, and add it to the schedule. 7. Start a household project. Allow a little couple’s creativity to take over and plan your own project. Remember, projects can be small or large. Anything goes with the couples’ household project. 8. Enjoy an ice cream treat special. Build your own ice cream treat for two, and don’t worry about the calories. 9. Enjoy a couples massage. Anyway, it’s about a beautiful princess who is supposed to marry a dreadful prince. But the adventure comes when she is rescued by her one true love. any Texas cities were faced with frigid temperatures, power and water outages and shortages of food in the February winter storm. Sheriff Tracy Murphree states, “The Denton County Jail is like a small city. We are in charge of the well-being and care of around 1000 inmates. While other county offices are closed for the inclement weather, we are conducting business as usual.” He also added, “I am very proud of our Officers, staff and Facility Maintenance team that went above and beyond during those difficult days.” The Denton County Jail never lost power like so many others did during the winter storm. The jail has several generators that are in place should they be needed. The generators are tested regularly as
mandated by the state, to assure that they are functional. The temperature in the jail never went below the acceptable range but there were extra blankets handed out as needed for inmates. The Denton County Jail also never lost water, but because of the City of Denton’s Boil Water Notice, we were affected. We had to boil all water that was used for cooking and drinking. Igloo water coolers were purchased to be distributed throughout the jail. We also purchased 12,000 water bottles and 6000 pounds of ice.
Another challenge the jail faced was with our food supply. We rely on food deliveries and because trucks couldn’t make their routine deliveries, we were

to getting back on the field,” Griffin said. “I felt really good about our chances last
year with the team we had, and having it cut short was disappointing. We weren’t
the only ones in that boat, though. A lot of people, especially early on, have hopes
of winning the whole thing. When it’s all taken away, it’s tough. It was strange.”
