The Love
OF PETS Even If They Get Me In Trouble
B
eing that this is our pet issue, I am reminded by how much I love having pets around. It doesn’t matter if it’s a dog, cat, or a fish, each and every one of them deserves a home — my home.
I’m embellishing a little bit, but my husband, Scott, would be the first to tell you that I can’t say no to a cute furry face. We currently have our dog, Jake, and two rescue animals, another dog named Bentley and a cat named Nugget. In each case, I didn’t tell Scott that I was coming home with another pet. The story about Nugget is actually pretty funny, as far as I’m concerned. I went to do a walk-in at a local shelter and walked away with a cat. Scott was in Kansas for our son’s baseball tournament, so he had no idea. On top of that, I managed to hide the cat for two days before he finally noticed.
He wasn’t pleased. But luckily, Scott and our kids love a cute furry face, too, and ultimately, they quickly became an integral part of our family — as did many of our other pets over the years. In this issue, you’ll find all sorts of articles on pets, from how to avoid poisons to combating allergies. You may even find a few cute photos. Speaking of photos, send us your favorite pet photos by email or through social media. You never know when we might publish stuff like that. Thanks for reading, and enjoy this month’s issue!
Sincerely, Kelly Murray

Your Pet?
Breathe Easy
A
lthough many people have discovered the beneficial effects of caring for a furry friend, the fact remains that roughly 15 to 20% of the population is allergic to animals. The result? Countless pet parents in unhappy, unhealthy situations — and their beloved pets are the cause! Allergen is the medical term for the actual substance that causes an allergic reaction. Touching or inhaling allergens leads to reactions in allergic individuals. Symptoms can include red, itchy, watery eyes and nose; sneezing; coughing; scratchy or sore throat; itchy skin, and most serious of all, difficulty breathing. The most common pet allergens are proteins found in their dander (scales of old skin that are constantly shed by an animal), saliva, urine, and sebaceous cells. Any animal can trigger an allergic
“I love my dog, there are several things I do to manage the dander and allergens to ensure she stays with me. When she greets me at the front door after a long day at work with a wagging tail and excited tippy taps it makes it all worth it”— Liz Wallace 8 | LANTANA LIVING

response, but cats are the most common culprits. People can also become allergic to exotic pets such as ferrets, guinea pigs, birds, rabbits, and rodents. There is no species or breed to which humans cannot develop allergies. Fur length and type will not affect or prevent allergies — sorry, Labradoodle lovers. Certain pets can be less irritating than others to those who suffer from allergies, but that is strictly on an individual basis and cannot be predicted. Once the diagnosis of a pet allergy is made, a physician will often recommend eliminating the companion animal from the surroundings. Heartbreaking? Yes. Absolutely necessary? Not always. Keep in mind that most people are allergic to several things besides pets, such as dust mites, molds, and pollens, all of which can be found in the home. Allergic symptoms result from the total cumulative allergen load. That means that if you eliminate some of the other allergens, you may not have to get rid of your pet. (Conversely, should you decide to remove your pet from your home, this may not immediately solve your problems.) You must also be prepared to invest the time and effort needed to decontaminate your home environment, limit future exposure to allergens and find a physician who will work with you. Read on for helpful tips:
www.LantanaLiving.com
Improving the Immediate Environment • Create an allergen-free room. A bedroom is often the best and most practical choice. By preventing your pet from entering this room, you can ensure at least eight hours of freedom from allergens every night. • Limit fabrics. Allergens collect in rugs, drapes, and upholstery, so do your best to limit or eliminate them from your home. If you choose to keep some fabrics, steam-clean them regularly. You can also cover your furniture with sheets or blankets which you can remove and wash regularly. • Vacuum frequently using a vacuum equipped with a HEPA (highefficiency particulate arresting) filter or a disposable electrostatic bag. • Install an air purifier fitted with a HEPA filter. Our modern, energy-efficient homes lock in the air that is loaded with allergens, so it’s smart to let in some fresh air daily. • Use anti-allergen room sprays. These sprays deactivate allergens, rendering them harmless. Ask your allergist for a product recommendation. www.LantanaLiving.com
Decontaminating Your Pet • Bathe your pet at least once a week. Your veterinarian can recommend a shampoo that won’t dry out his skin. Bathing works to wash off the allergens that accumulate in an animal’s fur. • Wipe your pet with a product formulated to prevent dander from building up and flaking off into the environment. Ask your veterinarian to suggest one that is safe to use on animals who groom themselves. • Note any symptoms of dermatitis exhibited by your companion animal. Dermatitis often leads to accelerated skin and fur shedding, which will up your allergen exposure. • Brush or comb your pet frequently. It’s best to do this outdoors, if possible.
Taking Care of Yourself • If possible, have someone other than yourself do the house cleaning, litter box work and pet washing, wiping, and brushing. If you must clean the house or change the litter, be sure to wear a dust mask. • Wash your hands after handling your companion animal and before touching your face. The areas around your nose and eyes are particularly sensitive to allergens. • Designate a “pet outfit” from among your most easily washed clothes. Wear it when playing or cuddling with your companion, and you’ll leave other clothing uncontaminated. February 2020 | LANTANA LIVING | 9

Lantana’s Family
sushi restaurant by Steve Gamel
A
sk Brian Kim what makes his Tokyo Samurai restaurant in Lantana different, and he’s going to mention one word first. “Family,” Brian said.

It might seem strange to hear that word used first to describe a restaurant. Most owners — especially one who has 15 years of experience as a sushi chef — might instead point to their tasty menu, worldclass bar, or superior customer service as the reason for their success. Trust us when we say that Tokyo Samurai can brag on all of that and more, but it’s their family atmosphere that has made this place Lantana’s premier neighborhood sushi and hibachi bar. “About 90 percent of our customers are regulars, so we know them and what they like to eat and drink. It’s their neighborhood restaurant,” Brian said.
“Our staff has been the same from the beginning, so it’s a lot like a family.” Tokyo Samurai has been in Lantana for five years. Brian took over as the owner two years ago after owning Mua Sushi in Coppell for five years. He brought his Hibachi Chef and General Manager with him and has received nothing but rave reviews. Tokyo Samurai offers a variety of sushi, sashimi, and rolls as well as options for those who are trying sushi for the first time. They also offer Asian-fusion dishes and the always-popular hibachi fire grill where your meals are cooked in front of you by chefs who want to make the viewing process a fun experience. The restaurant is perfect for reunions, birthday parties, anniversaries, or a fun night out with friends and family. “We are used to what we are doing, and our customers notice,” Brian said.

WHAT TO GRAPES
For Dogs
I
t can happen to even the best of pet lovers: You turn around for just a minute or accidentally leave your purse unattended, and your beloved furbaby ingests a potentially harmful or fatal pet poison. So what can you do to try and prevent this from happening and to keep your babies safe from accidental harm? The first thing is to be educated on common pet poisons and remain diligent about keeping these items out of their reach. Here is a list of commonly found items around your homes that can be dangerous to your pets. For a complete list of pet toxins, visit the Pet Poison Helpline at www.petpoisonhelpline.com If you think your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous item, contact your veterinarian or pet poison helpline immediately.

Grapes sound like a great snack, except for the acute renal failure your dog might incur. Your kidneys won’t fail, but theirs might. Raisins are really just dried grapes, so they count, too.
For Cats
CHOCOLATE & COFFEE
ONIONS
LILIES
Chocolate tops the food warnings. Caffeine and theobromine cause toxicosis and may bring seizures and death. Dark chocolate and cooking chocolate rank highest in harm, and we all know coffee has caffeine in it.
Onions kill canine blood cells, resulting Heinz Body Anemia which can be life-threatening. Onion powder in food is enough to do this, so attention to ingredients is crucial.
Lilies are particularly toxic, including the following varieties: Tiger lilies, Daylilies, Asiatic hybrid lilies, Japanese show lilies, Easter lilies, Rubrum lilies, Stargazer lilies, Red lilies, Western lilies, and Wood lilies.
MACADAMIA NUTS
CHICKEN BONES
DETERGENTS
Macadamia nuts are particularly poisonous to dogs, and it’s easy to forget if they’re in cookies and snacks, you might be tempted to share.
Chicken bones can splinter and do all sorts of harm. In fact, cooked bones of any kind may be brittle and hazardous.
Some household cleaning products, when ingested by a cat, can cause profuse drooling, chemical burns, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.
RAW MEAT
ALCOHOL
ASPIRIN
Raw meat thrown to the dog is something you see in the movies, but our domesticated dogs aren’t wild anymore, and some are susceptible to salmonella and other bacteria.
Alcohol can cause the same liver and kidney damage it does to humans. It can also cause acidosis in your dog and end in cardiac arrest.
If your cat is experiencing joint pain, giving him even half a pill can be fatal. Consult your vet before giving your cat any medications.
www.LantanaLiving.com
DOG FLEA MEDICATION Flea and tick topical medications for dogs are harmful to cats. Never apply an insecticide intended for dogs (even small dogs) to your cat. These medications often contain high concentrations of a chemical that is highly toxic to cats.
ANTIDEPRESSANTS Human antidepressants are like catnip to cats. They love the smell of common antidepressants and can’t resist eating the pill. They can cause lethargy, tremors, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and hyperthermia in cats.
POISONOUS PLANTS Common household and garden plants are very dangerous for cats. Licking the pollen or lapping up water from the vase can result in severe acute kidney failure.
ONIONS Onions kill blood cells, resulting Heinz Body Anemia which can be life-threatening. Onion powder in food is enough to do this, so attention to ingredients is crucial.

iverny is absolutely gorgeous and a place I never expected to visit, but am so glad I did. What a treat to see the actual gardens and home that inspired this French Impressionist painter’s famous works of art. This is the birthplace of the Impressionist movement! Painter Claude Monet moved to Giverny in northern France, just 45 miles outside of Paris, after seeing the charming village from a train while traveling to Normandy.
There are many ways to travel to Giverny from Paris – I chose a Fat Tire Bicycle Tour (a Texas Company), and it was a blast! We met near the Eiffel Tower then took a private bus to the beautiful wheat and sunflower fields of Normandy on to the village of Vernon. There, we got our bikes, visited the local market for picnic supplies, and had lunch along the Seine River in a

beautiful park. After lunch, we cycled the charming bike path to Giverny. We toured Monet’s house and gardens then leisurely pedaled back along the Seine River to the cemetery where Monet was laid to rest.
One of my favorite memories was simply looking out a window of Monet’s house. Looking outside to the gardens through the window is literally like a framed painting. It was surreal. It’s so easy to imagine Claude Monet painting in his gardens. This place is fabulous and truly a feast for the eyes and a dreamy French experience!

ears back, a friend asked Eric Aviles what he would name his business if he ever owned one. Eric quickly screamed, “Hailfighters,” as he excitedly karate kicked the air. A few chuckles later, Eric decided the name was perfect.
If you don’t know the name now, you will. Hailfighters Auto Dent Repair is a fullservice automotive restoration company gaining major popularity with the residents in our community. Their mission to provide 100% customer satisfaction, along with the friendly and highly qualified technicians, is making them a household name.
His knowledge of the industry and strict qualifications for his employees has allowed him to recruit the best of the best. “Our greatest strength is our team,” Eric said. “Having a reliable team is essential to making sure the customers always get the quality service they deserve.”
Eric has worked in the automotive industry for over a decade. Prior to starting Hailfighters, he was part of a repair facility in Dallas for many years.
Hailfighters works hard to allow you to drive off the lot a happy customer. They also fight for you every step of the way. From hail damage to a fender bender, Eric and his team will walk you through the process.
“I quickly picked up the culture of the business by helping in every department,” Eric said.
“From the insurance claim to the pickup and drop off,” Eric said. “Count on us to value each vehicle with the upmost care.”
Starting in a small garage in
Highland Village less than three years ago, word of mouth through the community has helped Eric and
Hailfighters outgrow their space. “We are happy to announce we are

Ask The Expert: Legal Advice
2020 new legislation
IS YOUR retirement
more SECURE? by Jennifer Balmos, Owner of Balmos Law, PLLC
T
he SECURE Act, effective on January 1, 2020, brings three major changes to retirement planning.
First, the age at which an individual must take required minimum distributions of his or her retirement account has been raised from 70½ to 72. This is great news for anyone who doesn’t need the income to cover their living expenses, as it gives the assets more time to grow. Second, the SECURE Act removes the age restriction for qualified retirement accounts, meaning that individuals may continue to contribute to these accounts even after reaching age 70 ½.
Now for the not so great news. For many beneficiaries, the SECURE Act eliminates the “stretch” for inherited retirement funds. Prior to its enactment, those who inherited retirement funds could “stretch” the payments out over their life expectancies. For younger beneficiaries, this had the benefit of smaller annual distributions made over a longer period of time, which minimized the impact of income tax on the distributions. The SECURE Act, however, requires that all retirement funds be paid out within 10 years, unless the beneficiary fits one of a few exceptions. Practically speaking, an individual who inherits a retirement fund during her peak earning years could
find herself unexpectedly bumped into
a higher tax bracket. The Congressional Research Service estimates that this
change could generate up to $15 billion in tax revenue over the next 10 years.
That said, there are some exceptions to
this rule. For example, minor children may continue to “stretch” out distributions
over their life expectancy. However, that
changes when the child reaches the age of majority. Once the child turns 18, he
or she will now be subject to the 10-year payout rule.
In light of these changes, both
retirement plans and estate plans should be carefully reviewed.

“Artists and their art can speak a language that words themselves sometimes can’t do,” Sandra said. Her inspiration comes from other artists, and she is excited to share her debut novel in hopes that the readers are inspired to create. If you’re stuck on a project or don’t know where to start, Sandra’s advice is to “write with the end in mind.” “For me, I do think having the end in mind, at least where you are headed, helps craft the story,” Sandra said. “Because, you can get there a million different ways.” No matter how she got there, we are happy she did. Mortal Sight is set to release on April 14, 2020. Its sequel will release sometime in 2021. Sandra is deeply involved in the art world. She is going through a leadership program with Art House Dallas and volunteers her time once a month at the Flower Mound Teen Writers Group. Sandra lives in Lantana with her husband, John, and their four children. When she isn’t writing you might find her at an art gallery, a concert, or on the tennis courts.

tep one foot inside the front door at Bosco Auto Group in Flower Mound, and it will be difficult to tell if the fresh smell is coming from all the shiny cars on the showroom floor or from the building itself. Inside the new dealership and dedicated to bringing that high-quality used vehicle experience to the neighborhood are Paul Bosco Jr. and his team. He opened his new family-driven full-service dealership at 1401 Justin Road only a few short months ago. The place feels like home, and the staff members are as approachable as a neighbor of 20 years. The store will offer 300 quality pre-owned vehicles along with the ability to service and maintain vehicles in their service facility. “Local people are finding us,” said Paul, a graduate of the University of North Texas. He was raised in Double Oak and Copper Canyon and now resides in Lantana, so the word local is in his blood. Being a local owner operated business, he is focused on bringing an excellent automotive experience to an internet dominated industry. “Internet consumers are driving the industry, which means most dealerships have lost focus on the local market. My goal is to turn that part of the scale around for our store and bring value to shopping for automotive needs locally,” Paul said. www.LantanaLiving.com

This location may be new, but Paul isn’t new to the industry. He started the business in February 2006 while in college. He was driven by a passion for cars and the business grew from there.

These relationships take time to establish but allow Bosco Auto Group to tailor a personalized buying experience. “People sometimes have the misconception that just because we’re smaller and local that we are limited in some way. We can do all the same things the big highway stores can do, and in many cases, we do it better,” Paul said. “We have built strong relationships, and we are not brand associated. That means we can offer something for everyone.” He added, “We understand that this community is diverse, and we want the inventory we offer to fit. Whether they are a first-time buyer, upsizing or downsizing, or looking for their dream car — we can help.” Everyone knows the Bosco Auto Group sells cars. What they don’t know is that they have a 14-bay state-of-the-art repair and maintenance facility. This has been one area of concentration for Paul and his staff, who not only make sure the vehicles they sell are ready for the next owner but are focused on the customers who haven’t bought from them.
“Our goal is to turn customers into clients,” he said. “You don’t have to buy a vehicle from us to take advantage of our service facility. We can maintain or service nearly any make or model, foreign or domestic,” Paul added. From a basic oil change or alignment to complete engine replacement and anything in between, the team will get the job done right. Bosco Auto Group’s service center is also separated from the local service competition with its service loaner program. The program allows customers to schedule a repair with the service center and have a loaner vehicle to use while their vehicle is getting the necessary repairs to put it safely back on the road. “Nobody enjoys spending their free time sitting around a waiting room for their vehicle to be repaired. Some repairs take more than a couple hours, even days to

complete properly. The loaner program allows us to keep our clients moving forward while we address their needs,” said Paul. Do you want to sell Bosco Auto Group a vehicle? It’s a very simple and safe process compared to trying to do it yourself. “Selling a vehicle as an individual can be risky and a headache. A lot of local sellers just want a quick selling experience. Come by the store, give us 15 to 20 minutes to review the vehicle and then grab a check. It’s that easy,” Paul stated. “Since we’ve opened this location, we’ve already had at least 30 local people walk in and sell us their vehicle after seeing how strong of a buyer we are.” Bosco Auto Group is the certified Kelley Blue Book Buying Center for this area. This takes a large commitment and a strong partnership with KBB to be the store chosen by KBB to trust with their reputation. Bottom line, the goal is to provide the community with a trusted and capable home for their full automotive needs. The Bosco Auto Group has that down to a science — visit them and see for yourself!

Bringing the Community

s simple as it may seem, some people never meet their neighbors. In a community
with over 3,000 homes, meeting other residents might seem impossible. The
idea behind a lifestyle program is to give
opportunities for residents to get to know each other and build up that community feeling.
Thanks to Ashtin Slovak, Lantana is doing just that.

Ashtin has taken what Lantana started with, the Spring Festival, Music on the Greens series, the Halloween Event,

each week; there are Adult Coloring Book nights, Senior Lunches, Storytime, and Bingo.

the association, Ashtin is very excited about the opening of the Lantana
Community Event Center in early March. Strictly used for events; the center has
a full indoor space, a caterers kitchen, a great lawn, Japanese rock garden, and much more.
“The center is really going to help us expand our events,” Ashtin laughed. “We can host more than 30 people in a room.” With the opening of the center, she is gearing up for Casino Nights and Murder Mystery Parties. “This will give us an opportunity to allow residents to take a bigger advantage of our lifestyle program,” Ashtin said. “There will be a reservation system in place; organizations or clubs could rent out the space, or we will open it up for an indoor meeting space.” Ashtin gives credit to Mark Norton, Lantana Community Manager, and
Bruce Crawford, Insight Association Management President, for supporting her ideas and partnering with her to build the lifestyle program to what it is today. “I love working for Insight, they have a good mindset for the residents,” Ashtin said. The residents are the part of the job Ashtin loves the most. She enjoys the relationships she has built while planning and hosting events. She even answers to “bingo lady!” “I love people, I love the kids events, and I love hanging out at Senior Lunch and talking to all of my regulars,” Ashtin said. “I personally call Bingo once a month, it’s a lot of fun.” Lantana is such a wonderful and unique place. Ashtin truly enjoys working in the community and being a connection to help guide residents. “As it finishes up development and we look towards how we can keep the community together with the lifestyle program, we want Lantana to continue to be a wonderful place to live in the future,” Ashtin exclaimed. When Ashtin isn’t in Lantana, she spends her time with her fiancée and three fur babies. She is also the managing director for the Love Pit, a foster and rescue organization. Going Beyond Just A

efore Rick Valley and a group of his fellow restauranteurs decided to open an upscale dining place in Highland Village, the first thing they did was ask friends who live nearby where they go to get delicious food and a great experience. “They said they went to this place or that place, but generally, they left and went to Southlake, Las Colinas, Uptown, Plano, and even Frisco,” Valley said. “I just thought that was a real shame that they felt like they had to leave their town to go get the type of experience that we ultimately wanted to give them. Our goal was to keep people close to town.” He added, “We didn’t want them to drive 22 miles one way to find an experience that was upscale, reasonably priced, and enjoyable.”

So far, Hillside Fine Grill has been the perfect answer for a community that deserves something of their own. Not only can you get great food at
reasonable prices, but Hillside offers the ideal atmosphere for any night out — whether it be for date night, dinner with family and friends, or just an opportunity to sit at the bar for a few drinks. Hillside is locally-owned and is a welcome departure from the typical chain restaurants on every corner. And the menu truly is to die for. If you like seafood and steaks, they’ve got the best in DFW. If you prefer a juicy burger, chicken, or pasta, there are plenty of options to satisfy your cravings. Add in a few craft drinks and a Kerrington’s Hot Fudge Sundae, and you’ll never want to eat anywhere else. “This was meant to be a family-friendly neighborhood restaurant run by local people, and the response has been positive,” Valley said. “The menu has a little bit of everything, but beyond that, we want to make sure we are best in class when it comes to service and providing a great experience.”

S
urprise! The latest news is that the flu vaccine is a “mismatch” for some of the most common strains of the flu. A universal vaccine is in the works, but until then, it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms and provide supportive care quickly. Symptoms of the flu in kids can include sore throat, muscle aches, congestion, fever, chills, and fatigue. If your child is feeling sick, help them feel better by encouraging rest and keeping them hydrated. You can also try these kid-friendly flu home remedies to give relief.
Home remedies to help soothe a child’s cough: •
•
•
Drink warm fluids: Warm liquids such as caffeine-free tea, broth, or hot water with lemon can help loosen up mucus and soothe a sore throat. Consider using a humidifier: Consider placing a cool-mist humidifier in your child’s room, near where they sleep, to help ease their breathing.
• •
•
Breathe in warm water vapors: Let your child breathe in water vapors from a warm bath or shower. This loosens mucus and calms your child before bed. Try icy treats: Give your child cold items like popsicles or ice cream. Saline and suction: A saline solution, such as a nose spray or mist, can help loosen mucus in the nose. Have your child blow their nose frequently, or if they are young, use a suction bulb to prevent drainage. Give a spoonful of honey (over age 1): A teaspoon of honey can help combat coughing but

should only be given to children over the age of 1.
Sleep/Rest: Encourage your child get plenty of rest and sleep to promote healing.
What temperature is a (high) fever for a child? A normal body temperature is about 98.6°F. A temperature of 100.4°F or higher is considered a fever for a child. Keep in mind that everyone’s body temp fluctuates and is usually lower in the morning and higher in the evening. When your child has a fever, it is a sign that their immune system is fighting off an infection. Reducing fever may relieve some discomfort and allow for an opportunity to hydrate and re-evaluate your child. Oftentimes, it is beneficial to allow your child to run a fever of 100.4 to 101-102 degrees. Increasing body temperature is what will stop the replicating and potentially allow a quicker recovery. When should you worry about a fever? Call your primary care physician if your child is: •
Younger than 3 months of age with a temperature of 100.4°F or higher.
•
Age 3 to 6 months with a temperature up to 102°F and appears very lethargic or irritable.
•
Age 6 to 24 months with a temperature above 102°F, lasting more than a day with worsening symptoms.
The flu is highly contagious, and we should do as much as possible to prevent the spread. Wash your hands frequently, do not touch your face, stay clear of those who are coughing, and keep your children home if they are ill.

Helping G irls
Survive
The Stress
of Their Teen Years
A
by Jana Sosnowski
current trend in teenage circles is claiming bragging rights over who is the most stressed, which is often translated into who received the least amount of sleep each night. With a society that moves faster and faster with increases in technology, your daughter might be suffering from heightened levels of stress, particularly if her peer group comprises high achievers.
Dr.
Roni Cohen-Sandler describes the stresses that plague teenage girls today as fear of exposure, need for autonomy, fear of repercussion, fear of raising parental anxiety, avoidance of flaws, and comparison to a perceived ideal. The need for autonomy is a typical rite of passage, but adults can help girls change their desire to hide flaws and avoid exposure to perceived weakness. Dealing with stress as early as possible may prevent the drive to be the “most stressed out” or the student with the least amount of sleep. It can also prevent larger issues, including increased illness, craving for stimulants, lack of physical activity, and diminished academic achievement. Helping a teenage girl develop a realistic view of herself and the world around her is key to her reducing her own stress. Parents who openly communicate about their own stresses with work may help a teen
www.LantanaLiving.com
girl realistically evaluate her perception of her school work and lower her fear of disappointing her parents. According to Dr. Cohen-Sandler, the root of stress is often found in family expectations, cultural pressures, and self-esteem issues. Open communication between parent and daughter can begin to ease some of these stresses. If beginning communication is difficult, assistance from a psychologist can increase both parent and daughter’s willingness to talk. Stress management is also assisted by the education of the parent and development of the girl’s self-esteem via an understanding – by both parent and child – that perfect does not exist and the quest for the Ivy League school is often more damaging than encouraging. Girls who do not succumb to heightened levels of stress know from parents that enjoying themselves and finding their place in the world are more practical and sensible goals.

Denton resident
shares love of football
with youth by Dawn Cobb photo courtesy of Dawn Cobb
H
arold Jackson, a Denton County maintenance assistant for 38 years, still recalls his three years as a tight end for the Denton High School Broncos in the late 70s. The then 13-year-old from Tallulah in
northeast Louisiana found friends and a sense of belonging with his teammates both on and off the football field. It is that teamwork he has tried to instill in generations of southeast Denton youth for more than 20 years through mentoring, music, and football. Starting as a volunteer in 1985 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, not long after he graduated DHS in 1980, Jackson crafted a plan to create activities for youth at Fred Moore Park. Using money he collected from mowing yards as a side job, Jackson bought prizes to give away as part of a youth talent competition that he and Roger “Dollar Bill” Johnson called Apollo Nights. Each week, boys and girls gathered at the pavilion in Fred Moore Park to compete for prizes and showcase their talents. A short time later, Jackson and Johnson started the annual football tournament for kids of all ages as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations. Jackson said the evening celebrations left most of the day open, so it made sense to create something for the kids to enjoy during the afternoon. “We’d just start practicing, and they’d come out,” Jackson said, describing how the flag football tournament draws youth from across Denton each year. “Then, they’d come during the holidays.” 46 | LANTANA LIVING
| February 2020
Jackson worked with local businesses and organizations to cover costs for the annual tournament so that he could give each participant a t-shirt, snacks, and a trophy. He also made connections with former football players, who volunteer their time to mentor and coach. Mike Green, a former safety and cornerback who played eight years with the Chicago Bears, Seattle Seahawks, and Washington Redskins, said Jackson’s work, “does a lot for the community. It brings kids together, teaching them leadership and teamwork.” Tramain Jones, who played defensive back for the Florida Bobcats, Orlando Predators, Carolina Cobras, and the Tampa Bay Storm as part of the Arena Football League, agreed. “It’s a great thing Harold is doing for the kids and letting the kids have fun.”
Both traditions continued for decades with the final Apollo Nights competition in 2018. The football tournament continues, finishing its 20th event this past January. In his spare time, Jackson saves all of the newspaper photos of the students he has worked with and frames them to present along with copies of DVDs from the Apollo Nights competitions. Both the keepsakes and the events serve as lifelong memories for the many youth who have enjoyed these neighborhood traditions over the past two decades. When I think about the toddler years, I remember the busyness, the occasional chaos, and that long list of all the things that "only Mommy" could do. Now that the kids are older and more independent, I can look back at those early parenting years with some perspective, and I'd like to share a few suggestions for younger moms.

Look
Look In around Find your people. Even though we will always need people around us who are in different stages of life, we also need mom friends who are going through the same things we are. When you have a baby or a toddler -- or both -it's sometimes the hardest thing in the world to get out, do stuff, or make plans. Let me encourage you: instead of letting the babies be the reason why you can't get out of the house, find a way to let them be the reason why you do. Believe it or not, children's activities aren't just about the kids. Many moms find their mom-friend crowd through kids' events. Does your library have a baby storytime? Give it a try. Is there a preschool mom’s group in your community? Find out if you can visit a meeting. Do you have a nearby playground? Pick a day to eat your sandwiches at the park and see if someone with kids wants to join you.
Mirror
Being a mom changes everything -- or does it? Every now and then, be sure to look in the mirror and remember the "you" that you were before having kids. She's still in there. She's got ideas and hobbies, and she's good at so many things. Once in a while, try to carve out a little time to do something you love that's not just a momjob. It can be refreshing and renewing to pick up a forsaken hobby, a good book, or a favorite pastime. While you're at it, think of one healthy habit you can focus on for yourself. Remembering to drink an extra glass of water daily? Getting outside in the fresh air and sunshine for a couple of minutes? Doing that 15-second plank challenge your friend talked about? It doesn't have to be anything earth-shattering, but it's a little something you can do to take care of you. www.LantanaLiving.com
Look outward
Make someone smile when you have the chance. Ask for advice from someone you admire. Send a friend a text message just to say, "I'm thinking about you. Learn something new. Snatch five minutes when the kids are in bed and read a few pages of a good book. Ask a friend (and her kids) if she wants to stop by for a coffee (and animal crackers). Reach out. Say a kind word. You'll be glad you did. Sometimes, it seems like life is all about the kids. We spend most of our waking hours doing everything for them. And they're worth it! But don't forget that you're worth it, too. It's important to take care of yourself so that you can take care of them. www.LantanaLiving.com

Ask The Expert: Dentistry
MORE SUGAR. MORE CAVITIES. by Dr. Matt Artho, Owner of Country Lakes Family Dental
M
y son came home from school recently all excited about telling me a joke: “Dad, if Joey has 10 candy bars and eats five of them, what does he have...? Cavities!” As true as it rang in my ears, I’m also not surprised that Joey had 10 candy bars, considering my kids sometimes bring home bags full of candy from school. Now, as a dentist, I may not take candy restriction as serious as the father of Willy Wonka, but I am amazed at the amount of overall sugar exposure our children receive -- not only from school but also holidays, birthday parties, sport events,
and ironically, sometimes even from doctors or dentists at the local fair. With sugar consumption on the rise, as well as increased risks of diabetes and child obesity, here are some reasons why we should combat an excessive “sweet tooth.”
Cavities are the result of sugar, as oral bacteria consume the simple carbohydrates and produce tooth destroying acid as a result. In addition to the amount of consumption, the duration and frequency of exposure to sugar throughout can inhibit the buffers in your saliva to naturally decrease the acidity of your mouth -- further causing decay. The most obvious way to combat sugar consumption is to limit it. This, of course, is easier said than done. Other methods include encouraging children to brush, or at the very least, drink or rinse with water after eating sugar. Like all things, this may require a gradual change in habits but possesses promising future results. So, keep up the good fight and your smile with thank you.

How active listening Can Make You A Better Writer
I
by Steve Gamel, Owner of Edit This
used to mentor a young journalist. He was a good kid who was eager to learn, so much so that each time he got ready to do another interview with someone, he’d want to sit down with me and go over the list of questions he had prepared.
Usually, he was pretty spot-on, but one thing I’d always preach in those sitdowns was this: rather than worry about questions you think you should ask, focus on being the best listener you can be.
1. You And The Person You Are Interviewing Are At Ease
Here are 4 reasons why being a better listener will make you a great writer.
that you are listening.
Not everyone you interview has done this before. Ask the right questions, but first put them at ease by showing 2. You Learn Something You Didn’t Know
Edit This: Ask The Expert I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone into an interview and come out with a completely different story simply because I was willing to shut up and listen. 3. You Build Better Relationships Duh! People want to know they are being heard, that you empathize, and that you will get the story right. 4. You Avoid Misunderstandings Just like when you get into a spat with a loved one, each person wants to know their individual concerns are being heard. I get to know the individuals or companies I am writing about so that I can tell the best story possible. Active listening makes me look a lot smarter than any predetermined question.

Mobile Manners Up On
Your
by Contributing Writer
Respect for Waitstaff: If anybody is waiting on you, whether it be the barista at Starbucks or the waitress waiting to take your order, do them (and anybody around you waiting for service) a courtesy and pay attention. Should there be a call or text you have to respond to, step out of line or have a buddy hold your place or get your food for you.
In addition to these general rules for good mobile manners, remember to watch your language. If you're at a place where you wouldn't be spouting out curse words, don't do it on your phone – especially if there are children around. If you know a conversation is going to get heated, either save it for later or find a more remote location. As for distance, the general rule is to maintain at least ten feet between yourself and others around you. For all other situations, exercise good judgment - and never text or talk while driving.
Universal Quiet Zones: There are some places where it's never appropriate to take calls and send texts under any circumstances. Some of these universal quiet zones include theaters (unless you want to be pelted with popcorn), churches, funerals, weddings (maybe at the reception, but never during the ceremony), at plays (or anything having to do with the theater), at hospitals (except for the waiting room) and in the library.
N
early everyone has a cellphone, so it's as good a time as any for a refresher course on appropriate cellphone manners. Not only will having a grasp of mobile manners make a good impression on others, but it could also save you some unwanted hostility from strangers at the bus stop to servers, fellow diners, and dates.
www.LantanaLiving.com
Dates: Ideally, the focus of a date should be on the person you're with at the moment, not on who may be suddenly texting or calling you. If you don't have enough willpower to let calls go to voicemail or ignore texts, put your phone in your pocket or purse and ignore. Placing it on the table is never wise, especially if you have it on vibrate or have a crazy ringtone that's likely to have everyone in the place looking to see who's playing "Super Freak."
Call Volume: Even though cellphones are getting smaller and smaller, the speakers on newer phones are perfectly capable of picking up your voice – so there's no need to yell. Be mindful of who's around you and adjust your vocal tone accordingly. If your call suddenly gets heated, try to find a place with a little more privacy where you can have such a conversation without bothering everyone around you.
Face-to-Face Interactions: If someone is taking the time to have lunch with you or meet with you for business reasons, suddenly taking a call or texting is just plain rude. Such behavior can be disastrous if you're meeting with a client or going through a job interview. If you know you can't resist the urge, either turn your cellphone off completely or leave it in the car. February 2020 | LANTANA LIVING | 55

Guyer softball eager to start
another season by Steve Gamel
C
oming into the first wave of practices this season, Guyer softball coach Keith Medford did what any coach whose team was coming off a deep playoff run would do: he told his team that last year doesn’t matter anymore. After all, coaches at all levels never want their players to rely on past success or look too far ahead — because that’s what gets you beat. But even Medford, who is the only coach the Lady Wildcats have known, admits their winning tradition is hard to overlook. “We always tell them it’s a new year and new people, but it’s always nice to have successes to hang your hat on — not just last year, but for the last 14 years,” said Medford, who is entering his 15th season at Guyer. “That puts a little pressure on them, too, because they see all those banners in the outfield and want to keep that tradition going.” While Guyer has yet to win a state title, it is consistently in the hunt and is coming off back-to-back runs to the third round of the Class 6A playoffs. Last year’s team finished 26-9 and was led by a dominant senior class that featured the likes of Morgan Medford, Kara Debruin, Bailey Anderson, Eva Myers, Jenna Rover, and Abby Willis. All those players have graduated, but unsurprisingly, coach Medford has plenty of weapons left in the lineup. Heading into the Mid-Cities Tournament on February 20-22, the team’s first of three tournaments to start the year, the Lady Wildcats have a healthy mix of returning stars and girls who weren’t starters but still logged considerable time on the field in key situations. This includes the duo of pitcher Ranci Willis and second baseman Ryan Gallegos. Willis stepped up in a big way as a sophomore, going 19-8 with a 5.44 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 137 1/3

innings. Gallegos, a Syracuse commit, is a four-year starter and finished last year with a .341 average, 29 RBIs and 25 runs as a junior. Flanking them are new faces such as right fielder Nikki Overton, who came on late last year to lock down the starting role. Catchers Maddison Slater and Kate Wentworth split time last year and will be competing for the starting nod. Kate Moala also returns at third base, leaving center field, left field, shortstop, and first base as the biggest holes. The goal is to get everyone up to speed heading into what should be another murderer’s row of tough competition in District 5-6A. The district opener is set for March 9 against Keller Central. “It’s going to be a good combination of kids. We’ll have some young ones, but we still have the experience. And we’ll have a pretty big roster,” Medford said. “District is going to be a dogfight every night. We have a lot of respect for the Keller schools, and Eaton looks to be the best team in the district on paper. If we can just get out of the district and into the playoffs, we will be battle-tested. That’s what happened last year, and we were very successful.” He added, “Just make it out, and you’ll be in good shape.”
