KATZ COWLEY
Award winning illustrator Katz Cowley can’t help but smile at the journey Wonky Donkey has taken her on.
Drawing a path to success By Tammy Lovett WHEN Katz Cowley visited Australia in 1999, she came with nothing more than her sketchbook, guitar and a backpack. She never imagined she would return a decade later as an internationally
recognised and awardwinning illustrator. When Katz left Australia a year after her first visit, she went to New Zealand, a decision that would eventually see her wildest dreams unfold. Before 2009 the English-
born illustrator was relatively unknown, but by the end of that year her career flourished when she gave life to the “loveable ass” Wonky Donkey. Authored by Craig Smith, Wonky Donkey was the biggest selling children’s
book in New Zealand and Australia in 2010. By the following year Katz was working on her fourth book All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth when disaster struck. “I was working on this book when the earthquake

Fleeing devastated Christchurch, Katz found herself back in Australia, in Marysville, a town recovering from its own disaster. “I left without a plan, I was homeless at the time,” she said. It was here she took refuge, and despite the tragedy back home she gained new inspiration from her surroundings, completing All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth and its sequel Seesaw Po. “I came to a place I wasn’t known, I was very isolated,” Katz said. But that didn’t hinder her creativity; instead it fostered it.

Over the next year Katz hopes to publish parts of her personal journal that is littered with sketches, drawings and her own confronting thoughts. It’s set to give readers an honest glimpse into the artist’s inner workings. Katz also hopes to continue her love of teaching creative workshops and exhibiting her works with shows scheduled for 2013. To stay connected with Katz visit her Facebook page Katz Cowley Illustration.
This year Katz turned her hand back to that “loveable ass” that brought her so much success.

A sense of place art show
FOR over 100 years Alexandra has had its own brass band. During that time it has had different identities from the Fire Brigade Band, The Alexandra & Alexandra High School Band and the Alexandra and Eildon Band.
THE Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges and Kinglake Rages Visual and Performing Arts Alliance (KRVPAA) are jointly presenting an inaugural art show, ‘A Sense of Place’ on Friday 16th to Sunday 18th November 2012 at the Kinglake West Mechanics Institute, 1055 Whittlesea-Kinglake Road, Kinglake West.
During the 1990’s Bob Gillespie was instrumental in reforming the band for such events as Anzac Day and Carols in the Park. In 2001 the band was joined by Ken McColm who was invited to be the conductor. Ken was the former bandmaster of the Croydon Brass Band and also played with the likes of the late, great Dutch Tilders. “We are not one hundred per cent brass. We also have

Alexandra Brass Band is having its annual concert, ‘On the Move’, at 2.30pm on Sunday 4th November in the

The art show is a fundraiser for both organisations. Rotary’s aim is to fundraise for scholarships for local primary school students entering secondary school and KRVPAA will use funds raised in their ongoing support for local artists. Exhibits will include paintings, glass and ceramics, sculpture,

Because last year’s event was so much fun it was decided to do it all again. This time Phil Heuzenroeder, director of Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir, will be joined by the amazing Damian Smith, keyboard player for MMGC, musician-aroundtown and brilliant arranger. Singing in community is one of life’s feel-good joys. It’s not about being good at it, it’s about being part of it. This event is suitable for both beginners and experienced singers interested in
exploring the gospel tradition. Religious affiliation irrelevant, atheists welcome! The work shop costs $55 and includes lunch. The day starts at 11am and runs until 4pm. There will be
a new repertoire for those who came last time. Don’t forget to book. For more information phone The Pavilion Cafe Bar and Gallery at Strath Creek on 03 5784 9221.

Young at HeART
Touch a HeART with ART this Christmas
ALEXANDRA’S newest gallery Rustic Simplicity @ The Shear ‘N’ shedS is turning one year old! What better way to celebrate than to feature a group exhibition of 21 emerging artists? The Exhibition, ‘Young at HeART’, which opens from 6pm Friday 9th November, is a group exhibition of Alexandra Secondary College 2012 VCE Studio Artists. The exhibition will showcase a variety of media and art forms developed by each student within their folio.
CAN’T decide what to get Mum for Christmas? Why not something with a little heart? ‘Touch a HeART with ART this Christmas’ is a group exhibition of local and Victorian artists being held at Rustic Simplicity @ The Shear ‘N’ shedS, 74 Grant Street, Alexandra. The exhibition will feature a range of art forms including photography, painting with felt, acrylic on canvas, recycled metal and timberwork, pastels, linocuts and a range of mixed media and more traditional art forms.
Throughout the developmental stage of their folios, a great deal of time was injected into the exploration of each artist’s chosen theme regarding their use of media and techniques, the development of aesthetic qualities within their work and the communication of ideas based on their theme. In reality, there is just as much work that goes into the research and development
as there is in the production of the final artworks! Rustic Simplicity is delighted to host this inaugural VCE Studio Artists’ ‘Young at HeART’ Exhibition. This year the exhibition will run until 5pm Thursday 29th November. Entry is through the Shear ‘N’ shedS, 74 Grant Street at Alexandra’s only blokes only Barber Shop. However, this is not your typical barber shop – it’s one with a twist – complete with Curiosity/ Gift Shop and Gallery/ Lounge. Rustic Simplicity is open daily 10am – 4pm-ish (Tuesday and Wednesday by arrangement).
Join the artists for drinks and nibbles from 6pm Friday 30th November to celebrate the opening of the exhibition, designed to encourage creative gift giving of a handcrafted variety this festive season. The exhibition runs until 5pm Thursday 3rd January 2013. For further information about participating in this group exhibition, contact Cindy Ferguson on 0419 517 045 or email rusticsimplicity@hotmail. com. All welcome to apply. A further exhibition will feature during January – a second solo exhibition of Cindy Ferguson’s photography will be displayed in the gallery space at Rustic Simplicity @ The Shear ‘N’ shedS, 74 Grant Street Alexandra for most of the remainder of January 2013.

We mean business . . . A love of good coffee and hearty fare
IT was the love of a good coffee that inspired Paul Duhig to take over Café M in Kinglake’s main street. He used to go over the road every morning from his petrol station and hardware, both destroyed in the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, for his daily coffee. So when the business in the heart of the Kinglake township came up for sale, he had an obvious imperative – to continue serving good quality coffee for locals and the many visitors to the area. But Paul and his wife, Lyn, have upped the ante. They’ve expanded the café into what was the old post office and it now includes a warm, inviting dining area with comfortable seating that accommodates around 40. Creative interest is nurtured with artworks by locals adorning the walls. Food on offer includes some good hearty fare, homemade soup, gourmet pies

milk on the list with more traditional brews. Open from 6.30am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, Café M has something for everyone, from traditional breakfasts to a range of burgers that satisfy the heartiest of appetites. Burgers include chicken schnitzel or chicken fillet burgers and are particularly popular. Gourmet pies include Moroccan lamb, Thai chicken, chicken, leek and Swiss cheese, black Angus, beef and mushroom, beef and burgundy and pure Aussie beef. There’s also home-made pastas, lasagne and focccias. Locals can phone through orders for 11 varieties of pizza available for take-away from 5.30pm to 8.30pm on
Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Manager Jaimee Charles says that more gourmet varieties will be available in the coming months. “We’re very locally orientated, so whatever the locals want, they get and obviously we also care about what our visitors want too,” she said. “We’re open to suggestions.” With summer approaching, Café M will be offering icecream – about 10 different flavours including sorbet and treats such as choc ripple, after dinner mint, macadamia nut and fruity raspberry. Slurpees go down a treat too on a hot day.
1990, Paul and Lyn are keen to support the locals. Staff all come from the area and include Jaimee Charles, Jacqui Pascoe, Kallie Pascoe Lyn Pascoe, Amanda Pascoe and Gina Mutch. Good food and friendly service are their key aims.

Celebrate our 129th with us
CELEBRATING its 129th year in 2012, the Alexandra Annual Spring Show has something for people of all ages. Livestock is a big feature at any agricultural show with Alexandra being no exception. The main arena is the stage for all horse classes and there is a free working draught horse display throughout the day. Commercial cattle classes will be made more interactive this year with a ‘guess the weight’ competition and information displays on specific beef breeds. Recent upgrades to the poultry pavilion will pave the way for more entries and as always the alpaca classes are expecting to be well supported. The show will highlight Alexandra’s first VYUFDA affiliated working dog trial which will be great for exhibitors and spectators alike. An important part of any agricultural show is the ladies’ pavilion where locals can show off their culinary skills, photography, craft and horticultural skills. There is a huge range of open and children’s age group classes so the ladies’ pavilion
competition isn’t just for mums and nans. It is a great opportunity to get your kids involved in their local community. We will once again have the interactive animal nursery and in 2012 we are pleased to welcome back Professor Wallace the puppet entertainer who will run a number of shows throughout the day (check the schedule for details). As always there will be games
and rides in sideshow alley to test your skill and stomach.

We also welcome back a wide range of trade stalls, the ‘Guns of Alexandra’ shearing demo and the dog obedience club displaying their skills. New to the show, we will be holding a pet parade at lunchtime so if you think your pet has the waggiest tail, shiniest coat and more then bring them along to get involved.

SATURDAY 24TH NOVEMBER 2012
Fun for everyone
THE finest of Yea’s agriculture, produce and leisure pursuits will be proudly on display when the Yea Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Association presents the 98th annual Yea Show on Saturday, 24th November. As well as a range of fabulous attractions, there will be plenty of action and entertainment to please all the family at the Yea Showgrounds. With production of quality beef one of the strongest agricultural industries in the district, the Yea Show mirrors local success, with its renowned line-up of magnificent stud and commercial cattle. Judging of the stud classes starts at 10am and judging of the commercial and On Hoof Vealer competitions starts at noon. The judges give an informative talk on the strong points of the breeds, and beef producers often gain some great information from these experts in their field. The ‘Lights On Convoy’ Ute competition and display, with flags flying and all the trappings that make a Beaut Ute will again make a great spectacle just inside the front gates. Don’t forget to vote for the People’s Choice. Entertainment includes sheep handling and yard dog demonstrations as well as the ever popular dog high jump and terrier races. Children are well catered for with Toot’s Magic Rocket Show, rides, showbags and the children’s Pet Show at 10am. There are children’s sections in all parts of the show and children are encouraged to
participate and enter in whatever area they’re interested. Help them to make their entry and watch the excitement when they win a prize.

Men at work . . .
FLOWERDALE MEN’S SHED
Men’s shed is almost ready to go IT’S taken a couple of years, a lot of thought and planning, not to mention paperwork, lobbying and meetings, but men in the Flowerdale district will soon have a shed of their own. Flowerdale Men’s Shed president and project manager Steve Junghenn said work to establish a Men’s Shed began not long after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. In the past year, a core group of six have met almost weekly, discussing the internal fit-out of the Bluescope steel building at the Spring Valley Recreation Reserve, facilities, tools and machinery, activities, insurance, occupational health and safety requirements and incorporation, among other things, ticking all the boxes “to make sure we’ve got it all done properly,” Steve said. Work is now progressing on an office, kitchen, toilet facilities, lounge and storage as well as an activities area/ workshop and it is hoped this will be complete and ready for use by early 2013. The group has looked to other local Men’s Sheds such as Whittlesea and Kinglake for advice and support, and has already gratefully received donations of tools and other useful bits and pieces from them, Steve said.
Factories often have equipment and tools that are in good working order but out of date and surplus to requirements when they’re updated, so they donate them to Men’s Sheds. Some sheds find they have more than they need to so they pass the equipment and tools on to newer groups like Flowerdale, which is setting up. Steve says that activities could include woodworking and metal work but they’re open to suggestions and are keen to tap into whatever expertise and experience members bring to share. “Hopefully, we’ll do whatever people want to do,” Steve said. “It may be that they just want to socialise - you don’t have to do anything in particular.” Also an executive member of the Strath Creek Landcare Group, Steve sees the Men’s Shed as serving the community interests at times. It could be involved in making nest boxes for use by the Landcare group which is working to restore habitat for wildlife in the area, or other helping with other community-based projects. It could also be about learning new skills or working on projects for individual use.
FLOWERDALE The Flowerdale Hotel offers meals and accommodation seven days a week, with a family friendly atmosphere in an original country style hotel 3325 Whittlesea-Yea Road Flowerdale 3717 Ph: 5780 1230 www.flowerdalehotel.com.au Email bigflocker@bigpond.com 16 – Murrindindi Guide Summer 2012/2013
Checking out work to fit out the new Flowerdale Men’s Shed is Joe Laucius, Steve Joblin, Steve Junghenn and John Brown. The shed’s main aim is to help address problems of isolation and the loneliness and depression that often follows. Steve says there are many men in the area who live alone; some are still dealing with the aftermath of the fires, and there are others who simply want to spend time with mates.. The group welcomes men aged 18 years onwards but it will also be open to women and community groups on occasions for special courses or sessions as required. The group has set up its constitution to reflect this aim. However the well being of men remains its primary focus. “We want to have it as a positive for the community but the priority is first and foremost that it’s for men’s use.” Steve says it is hoped that

the group will initially open two full days a week but hasn’t yet worked out which days. The group is ready and willing to respond to demand, and if that means the shed is open more often, then that’s what they hope will happen. The current working group includes men with a wealth of expertise and experience in farming, landscape gardening, building, plumbing, welding and steel work and all the associated skills and tricks of the trade that go with these jobs. And if the work they’ve done says anything, they’re an enthusiastic and dedicated bunch. New members are most welcome and for all inquiries phone Steve Junghenn on 0434 023 533 or Ron Shaw on 0403 085 596.

YEA 10TH & 11TH NOVEMBER 2012
Take the time to smell the roses
THE Rotary Club of Yea will hold the Yea and District Open Gardens weekend on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th November 2012. Twelve exceptional gardens will be open to the public, most for the first time. Gardens on display range from large country gardens to small town gardens. Some are well established with magnificent trees and one lovely new town garden is showing the promise of the beauty to come. Nine of the twelve gardens are opening for the first time this year and the three repeat gardens from the inaugural Yea and District Open gardens last year are well worth a second visit as all gardens are constantly rejuvenating and with the opening a little later this year, something different will be in bloom. Many of the country gardens have the added bonus of beautiful settings with expansive views and others offer the serenity of secluded river banks and the sound of water rippling by; a magical place to stay awhile to relax and reflect. Some of the gardens have specialist plant collections and one garden offers a

unique and fascinating collection of historic farm machinery and tools which are tucked away artfully throughout the garden. Another two are ‘Land For Wildlife’ properties and as well as the garden around the house, you will enjoy the bush and wetland settings down to the river. Yea Garden Club is holding its annual plant sale over the weekend and will offer an extensive range of treasures at bargain prices. The local ‘Seed Savers’ group will also offer a range of modern and heritage vegetable and flower seeds for sale. Morning and afternoon teas will be on offer in
several gardens and picnic lunches can be enjoyed at several beautiful and well appointed parks nearby or sample the many excellent culinary delights in the local restaurants or cafes. Gardens are open from
9.30am to 4pm each day. Tickets $3 per garden or $30 for all 12 gardens. See advertisement below for further information. Yea and District Open Gardens is an annual event so be sure to put it in your calendar for next year.

Water, water everywhere . . .
LAKE Eildon is Victoria’s largest man-made water catchment and has over 500 kilometres of shoreline. Lake Eildon National Park offers something for everyone! Enjoy bushwalking, bird watching, picnicking, camping, cycling, boating, fishing and spectacular scenic drives. The park is known for its abundance of wildlife. Kangaroos come to the shoreline at dusk to drink and wombats, echidnas and koalas are often seen. During spring birdlife, orchids and wildflowers are prolific. Walking Walking is one of the best ways to explore the park. Two short circuit walks start from the Fraser Camping Areas. Explore some of

Local wines . . . The Upper Goulburn wine region is truly cool
The Upper Goulburn wine region is truly cool. The Upper Goulburn Wine Region features a diverse geography rich in the natural beauty of lakes and river systems ideal for cool climate viticulture. The region stretches from north of the Yarra Valley, through Glenburn, Mansfield and Mt Buller; along the Melba and Maroondah highways to Tallarook, Yea, Marysville and along the Goulburn River to Eildon. As a destination the region offers quality wines matched with distinctive regional cuisine and tourism and event experiences that in combination will excite the senses like no other. Wine and grape types The region is ideal for true cool climate viticulture and is ideally located for the production of crisp and racy aromatic white and sparkling wines and elegant textural red wines. Besides the traditional well-known grape varieties, the region also offers a diverse range of alternative wines like tempranillo and sangiovese which have become increasingly popular in recent years. Other varieties such as riesling, gewürztraminer, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, viogner, pinot noir, shiraz, rose, pinot meunier, and dolchetto are also produced and enjoyed by many visitors to the region. Climate and geography The climate is strongly
influenced by high altitude but the picking dates – and the wine styles – leave little doubt that this is a very cool region overall. Rainfall varies from 700mm to 1400mm. The cool evenings of the high country combined with its location on the northern side of the Great Dividing Range, with significantly higher sunlight hours, gives our region a natural advantage. The Upper Goulburn Wine Region has a commitment to quality production with a low environmental footprint leading to less intervention with chemical additives. Many local events showcase our region’s fine wines and food, events like the Alexandra Easter Fair, Marysville’s Worlds Longest Lunch, The Upper Goulburn Long Lunch in Mansfield, Yea Autumn Festival and farmers markets in Yea, Alexandra, Kinglake Ranges, Mansfield and Marysville. An upcoming event is the inaugural Vision Australia Radio Cup on 18th November at Hume and Hovell Cricket Oval at Strath Creek will provide opportunities for visitors and locals to experience the local wine and fare. One local winery and cellar door is Sedona Estate in Murrindindi, South of Yea. From its humble beginnings, Sedona Estate’s vision has been to produce fine cool climate wines of impeccable quality that are regionally distinctive and unique in style. This began in 1997 when Sonja and Paul saw their land of rolling hills in the picturesque Yea Valley for the first time. Armed with a shovel, filled with passion but limited resources, Sonja & Paul embarked on an ambitious plan to transform a 50 year old cattle property
Estate label exceeded Sonja and Paul’s expectation, and their efforts were rewarded with a five star winery rating by James Halliday and listing amongst the ten best new wineries in the 2007 Australian Wine Companion. Sedona Estate has recently opened its cellar door, offering artisan food platters sourced from local producers to complement the diverse white and red wine range. Local produce . . . Fresh is better when it comes to extra virgin olive oil
GOULBURN Strathbogie Olive Growers Association (GSOGA) currently has about 60 members involved in growing, processing and marketing table olives, olive oil and olive products. Most GSOGA members are small part-time grove owners, typically owning between 200 and 1000 trees. Their groves are within the general Goulburn, Upper Goulburn and Strathbogie region, covering centres such as Euroa, Terip, Molesworth, Yarck, Yea, Avenel, Seymour, Mansfield, Eildon and surrounding districts. Australia has a boutique range of extra virgin oils
including some organic ranges, but Rob Mitchell from GSOGA asks; “so, can you tell the difference between a good shiraz or a chardonnay and the absolute cheapest cask wine ?” If your answer is yes, then the wine industry has done it’s job very well and you can now enjoy the wines you like by looking at the label and knowing that you will get the taste (generally) that is shown on the label – ie pinot noir or sauvignon blanc or chardonnay or shiraz – All will conjure up in your mind the flavours associated with the name.
However if you were asked “can you tell the difference between a Frantoio oil or a Liccino oil, or an imported Kalamata olive from the local supermarket and a Kalamata olive that has taken 12 months to produce in a
fermentation brine? Rob’s guess is that 99% of you will have no idea. (Based on taste tests conducted here locally and Australia wide). If your answer is no then you will understand that the Australian Olive Oil Industry has a long way to go in its education process. The Australian Olive Industry is a fast growing industry and our region has more than 60 growers who produce probably some of the best olive oil in the world. One such olive grove is in Thornton; Thornton Grove.

Clive and Sue Ogilvie purchased their property in 1985 in the lovely valley of Thornton. Around 2004 they met neighbours, Peter and Susie Hill who were growing olives, and were encouraged to plant some trees on their property. After much research the couple joined Goulburn Strathbogie Olive Growers Association (GSOGA) and
decided to plant a small number of trees – 360 on a north south slope at 250 trees per hectare Chosen varieties were Frantoio, Leccino (50/50) and Pendolino as a pollinator. After much attention the first harvest was in May 2007. The oil was verdant, very fruity and extremely pungent. The Ogilvies hand pick the fruit in late May to early June with the help of family and friends and then the fruit is processed locally within 48 hours This year their oil was submitted for judging at the 2012 Royal Melbourne Show, where under the label of Thornton Grove, was awarded a bronze medal in the Micro Processor Section. Historical Fawcett hall . . .
FAWCETT Hall is located 14 kilometres north west of Alexandra along Spring Creek Road within a small rural community that is home to about 25 houses. Part of the hall building dates back to its establishment in 1882. Originally the hall served as a Mechanics Institute and public library. The building was initially 30’x18’ and was built by public subscription. In 1887 the hall was extended to create a building that could seat 100 people. By 1888/1889 there were nearly 700 recorded borrowings from the library and in 1894 there were nearly 1,000 volumes on the shelves. From 1901 to 1905 the building was used as Fawcett State School No.3393. The condition of the hall was so bad that the Education Department sought accommodation elsewhere. In 1908 much of the old building was demolished, the early section being all that was retained. The hall was rebuilt and officially opened by Mr Thomas Hunt MLA on 5th August 1908 to a very large gathering of local people. Mr G Gilbert of Fawcett was the builder. The building served the
local community well in the years following but again deteriorated with time. In the 1960’s and early 1970’s the building served as a base for Melbourne based artists, Archie and Millie Colquhoun. Then a period of inactivity followed until 2004 when the Fawcett Hall committee learnt that an application to restore the fabric of the hall had been approved by Heritage Victoria. The grant consisted of $63,100. Restoration work was undertaken by Mr Steve Watson of Healesville. The grand reopening of the hall was held on Saturday 28th May 2011. A large crowd was in attendance with many older residents and families returning. The book Fawcett Hall; A history of the hall and its people, by David Ian Newman was also launched. Copies are still available and can be obtained from Ian Newman phone 5772 2997. The hall committee is currently seeking grant monies for a kitchen, toilet, decking and landscaping, and is fundraising for the last development and restoration aspects of the hall. The 130th birthday of the hall will be celebrated in November. - Committee of Fawcett Hall

Permaculture . . . AN INTRODUCTION What is permaculture?
By Rohan Dodds and Emily Friedel
grapple with to this day both directly or indirectly.
THE word ‘permaculture’ may not be completely unfamiliar to many people. Even so, many may still be in the dark as to what permaculture is, how is it practised, where the term comes from, and who developed the concepts and why.
In practice, permaculture revolves around three core tenets or ethics:
In this series of articles we hope to give those who are unfamiliar a glimpse into permaculture and all that it entails. Permaculture (permanent agriculture) is a conscious ecological design practice whose ideas, principles and ethics were first developed in Australia in the mid 1970’s by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren (although many others have since developed, furthered, and enhanced these initial concepts). The ideas were developed based upon a growing concern for the downward spiral humanity seemed to be hurling itself into through its continuing self-destructive practices - intensive methods of industrial agriculture, mass depletion of non-renewable resources, the dilution of this planet’s abundant levels of biodiversity, and many other social and environmental issues we continue to
Care of the planet: A considerate and caring approach to our planet and all of its systems so that they may flourish and develop as they will. Care of the people: To care for and cooperate with one another so that all may exist without wanting for those basic survival needs (food, shelter, water, etc.). Setting limits to population and consumption: only when we control our currently inequitable levels of consumption and growth as a species will we be able to share resources adequately, thereby allowing us to pursue the first two ethics fully. To define the concept further, Bill Mollison’s ‘Permaculture: A Designer’s Manual’ describes permaculture as the following:
providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way.” – Permaculture: A Designer’s Manual (preface pg. ix).
“[T]he conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people
The great thing about permaculture is that its design principles can be applied anywhere, in almost any situation regardless of space, material, and previous practical experience. It can be as simple as growing
herbs on a city apartment windowsill, using solar energy or composting. At the other end of the scale it can be as complex as a large scale broad acre farming system or living almost entirely selfsufficiently. You are really only ever limited by your creativity and enthusiasm. It is all about doing as much as you can with what you have, creating systems that

serve multiple functions, and creating a greater energy output than input. At home, we are doing our best to provide for our basic needs. e are currently working with no more space than a typical suburban backyard and are finding that this is ample to allow us to grow and produce a good percentage of the foods we eat (eggs, herbs, vegetables, legumes, a small amount of grains etc.). As can be seen in the accompanying photo we are lucky enough to have four chickens, each laying us one egg per day. Rather than allowing potential growing space to remain unused we have built a small garden with found materials alongside the chicken run where we now have a good amount of salad greens growing, and will soon have

varieties of peas, beans, and cucumbers climbing up and along the chicken wire fencing. We are stacking functions, which is a primary design concept in permaculture: • The chickens provide eggs and are mobile fertilisers and excavators, but they need protection. • The chicken run provides protection for the chickens, but has also proved to be an ideal structure to build garden beds along, packed with various vegetables, particularly those that climb. • Excess produce from the gardens feeds the chickens. • The chickens will be protected from the strong summer sun and heat, as the wire gradually becomes covered by the leaves of climbing plants. When winter comes along and warmth is required, our annual climbers will have died off allowing more light and warmth in. And these are just a few of the functions of this one system around our home. Once again, you are only limited by your creativity, so starting off with a few herbs growing on a windowsill at home to add to your pasta sauces or salad could be your small but significant entrance into the enormous world of permaculture!
Fishing . . .
Fishing the Goulburn River By Cameron Parker RISING out of the hills behind the township of Woods Point, the Goulburn disappears into the vast expanse that is Lake Eildon. Emerging again from the pondage gates at the Eildon township, the river is re-born as a tail race. While the main purpose of the Goulburn is irrigation and power generation , the cold, oxygenated water taken from the lake creates a unique environment for brown and rainbow trout all year round. What makes this river a fun challenge for the angler is the varying levels, and working out how the trout react to them. At low levels the river transforms into a small stream, complete with its pools and rapids, whilst when irrigation is needed downstream the higher levels present the angler with a big river with newly flooded margins and side flows off the main river. All methods of fishing work well on the Goulburn, but to my mind fly fishing and lure casting are the most challenging and rewarding for those of us who wish to take on this beautiful river and all its moods. My reason for choosing fly or lure is simple, the fly or lure fisherman is always on the move, searching out likely spots and working the fly
or lure through the water most likely to hold trout. This is perfect on the Goulburn as there are plenty of opportunities for the angler to get away from the crowds at the main access points, and walk all day fishing as you go. Whilst the river is closed to fishing for the spawning season (Queens birthday weekend in June to the first weekend in September) the remaining time between September and June contains some really varied weather that brings with it more fishing opportunities and challenges that demand a weekend away, or, at the very least, an RDO (or sickie) to explore them! To me the Goulburn is a no-brainer as a destination. It lies an hour and a half away from the ‘big smoke’, entails a really nice drive to get to it, access to the river is easy and, above all else, the fishing is challenging and rewarding for those who love their sport.

Canine culture . . .
Let your pet tag along by Dr Denia Ford AS the weather begins to warm up and day length increases we are seeing a growing number of locals and visitors alike making the most of the rail trail, local rivers and the lake. What better way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Murrindindi Shire than by letting your pet tag along too. At the vet clinic we see an increased number of cases over summer – mostly grass-seeds, heat exhaustion, misplaced fish hooks and snake bites.
New services for local dogs BAD manners and matts will be things of the past amongst the dogs of Murrindindi: at least, if Georgina Beach and her furry friends get their way. A behavioural biologist and experienced dog groomer, Georgina launched In The Pink Dog Services in Spring 2011, aiming to create a local one-stop-shop for all things canine. Based at Taggerty, the behavioural consultancy and dog obedience school attracts a small crowd of devoted attendees at weekly training classes; and assists psychologically-troubled dogs around the shire to resolve their issues through private lessons. In spring, to celebrate In The Pink’s first birthday, Georgina
has added a fully-equipped, home-based grooming salon to the business. So far, new clients are looking satisfied... and stylish!
If you’re planning to spend the day outdoors with your pet don’t forget to carry a supply of water for them to drink if needed. Sunscreen makes sense for dogs with white markings – particularly ears and nose. Provide timeout opportunities, especially for puppies and older dogs – relaxing in a cool shaded area won’t just benefit you.
In Shakespearian times, ‘in the pink’ meant ‘a shining example’. Now, not only will In The Pink’s clients represent shining examples of canine courtesy, they will shine literally–with glossy coats and gorgeous clips befitting the modern rural dog. Meanwhile, when not training or grooming, Georgina is a veterinary nurse at the Taggerty Veterinary Clinic, which offers discounts to regular In The Pink clients.
If your dog has long hair, get it trimmed before you let it go frolicking through seeded grasses – particularly around the feet, under the armpits and around the ears. Licking constantly at a paw or sudden shaking of the head/ scratching an ear may hint towards a grass seed.

Fish hooks are commonly found lodged in lips but can get caught in the stomach requiring major surgery. Avoid leaving fish/bait lying around with hooks in it if you have a dog - this is just asking for trouble. Snakes are a big concern for those frequenting the outdoors in spring and summer. Signs of a bite can include vomiting/excess drooling, collapse, hind limb weakness and dilated pupils. The best chance of survival is offered with antivenom treatment provided at the vet clinic. Most snakes will only bite if provoked – if bitten keep your pet calm and still on the way to the clinic. Notify the vet clinic that you are on the way so that they can be ready to treat as quickly as possible.

Four wheel fanatics . . . By Tammy Lovett
PERCHED atop a near vertical slope, Jayson Burley has not a trace of concern on his face as he skillfully navigates his way down the slippery decline. As president of the Cross Country Jeep Club, Jayson says the adrenaline and the challenges keep his passion of four-wheel driving alive. Forty-five years ago, the CCJC was one of the first clubs of its type in Australia; it now has 70 members. Since the 1970s the club has called Narbethong home, thanks to the Eastaugh family happily allowing the CCJC to build its home ground on their property.
