Arty facts . . . By Emily Friedel
IN 1976, aged 40, Wykeham Perry made the brave decision to leave a stable and well-paid position in the public service to become a professional painter. Wykeham had, at that time, been painting long into the night then getting up to go to the office – something had to give. Now, almost 78 years old, Wykeham says he has loved every minute of his career as an artist and has no intention of stopping: “I’ll just paint until I drop.” Wykeham grew up on a property on the MarysvilleBuxton Road and he began painting local scenes at a very early age. He still has a delightful water colour

of Old Cloverdale Cottage he painted when he was 11 or 12 years old; his natural aptitude for fine art became clear around this time and it was nurtured by family members and school teachers. Wykeham sold his first painting for two guineas at a high school parents’ day and in his final year of high school at Alexandra Secondary College he hitch-hiked from Buxton to Alexandra to fulfill a commission from the Alexandra Hospital to paint Dame Pattie Menzies childhood home. Completely self-taught, Wykeham studied the paintings of artists such as Sir Arthur Streeton at every

The influence of the Heidelberg School on Wykeham’s own paintings is clear, and his ability to capture the unique Australian landscape so succinctly is certainly reminiscent of the work of artists such as Streeton and Withers. Even with a lifetime of painting the Murrindindi area under his belt, Wykeham is still readily
inspired by its beauty and diversity; it never gets boring. The Cathedral Range alone, with its ever-changing face, has provided much fodder for his creative mind. In fact, a recent rendering of The Cathedral Range sits proudly in his studio among beach scenes, garden scenes, cityscapes and classic Australian Impressionist images of gum trees, old farm buildings and eucalypts. This Easter, Wykeham will exhibit at the Alexandra

Exhibitions at Rustic Simplicity, Alexandra Home is where the HeART is Gnomes and toadstools are among the recurrent themes in this joint exhibition by local photographer, Cindy Ferguson and ceramicist and mixed media artist, Peter Hook. Both artists have also explored migratory bird life, rustic homes, and a love of the beach and bush. This current exhibition, explores the theme of home encompassing safety, security, a sense of place, love, longing and belonging, and runs until Monday 10th March. Familiar Ground ‘Familiar Ground’ is a solo exhibition of pastel works by Hurstbridge artist, Kylie Sirett. Kylie’s recent work focuses on the strong shadows objects create, and she draws inspiration for her intimate still life works from her immediate surroundings; she’s a collector. Kylie sees beyond the rust, worn out paint and tattered book edges, seeing strength in the object’s original design. This exhibition opens with drinks and nibbles from 6pm Friday 14th March at Rustic Simplicity – all welcome. Imagine. Sustain. Conserve. The theme for this open group exhibition is in keeping with the theme for World Environment Day, which falls on Thursday 5th June.
Rotary Art Show for the 41st year in a row – he “hasn’t missed a beat” in all that time. Wykeham’s dedication to the Rotary art shows has no doubt contributed to his status as a much-loved local icon, and he is more than happy to support these shows, as the money they raise is fed back into the community. In the same community
spirit, he has donated numerous paintings over the years for raffles to Rotary and other organisations, including Darlingford Nursing Home, Eildon Tennis Club and Eildon Golf Club. For a closer look at Wykeham Perry’s stunning work, and possibly become the proud owner of a Perry original, visit the Alexandra Rotary Art Show on this Easter.
This year’s World Environment Day theme is ‘Think. Eat. Save.’ an anti-food waste campaign based on the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization’s figures that a third of global food production is either wasted or lost. The message is think before you eat and help save our environment! Contributing artists are encouraged to think outside the square and to consider other factors (as well as the theme) such as the aesthetics of the artwork entered. Therefore, an alternative broader theme for the show will be ‘Imagine. Sustain. Conserve.’ This exhibition will open with drinks and nibbles from 6pm Friday 2nd May and will run until the middle of June. Artists interested in contributing are encouraged to contact Cindy Ferguson on 0419 517 045; or rusticsimplicity@hotmail. com or drop in to the gallery where the exhibition will be housed at Rustic Simplicity @ The Shear ‘N’ shedS, 74 Grant Street, Alexandra.

Easter art show . . .
ALEXANDRA
“IT IS hard to believe this is the 45th annual Rotary Easter Art Show!” Art Show Chairman Ross Thompson said.
“It began from small beginnings in the Alexandra Shire Hall but soon outgrew the venue and moved to the Alexandra Leisure Centre.” The show has had very strong support from local artists throughout the years – such well-known artists as Ron Muller, Meg Heres, Noel Stevenson, Robert Young, Wykeham Perry and Ern Trembath. Ern Trembath has been a strong supporter throughout the years and again this year will be helping with lighting of the paintings, which is so important for the appreciation by the patrons. This year’s judge will be Noel Stevenson. Noel is a member of the Australian Watercolour Society. While living in the area Noel conducted three solo exhibitions. Basically self-taught, she has had the unique opportunity of observing many professional artists at work through her galleries. Demonstrating artist this year will be Brad Trembath who is renowned for his remarkable paintings of birds. Brad’s paintings of blue wrens, his speciality, have been a feature of the show over the years. He exhibits in some notable galleries and has featured in joint and solo exhibitions. There is an ever increasing demand for Brad’s work, and his paintings have been sent overseas as well hanging in private collections in Australia. This year the art show committee has decided to modify the competition prizes. They are proud of the consistently high quality of artwork

The Committee hopes that over time this will become one of the most sought after awards in the art community. If anyone wishes to enter paintings in the show or knows any artist who may wish to enter or needs further
information, please email alex.easter. artshow@gmail.com and a member of the committee will be delighted to help. There are a huge number of people across the Murrindindi area over the Easter period so you are encouraged to include a visit to the Alexandra Leisure Centre, Maroondah Highway over the Easter holidays to enjoy artwork, photography and crafts at the 45th Annual Rotary Easter Art Show.

Sights & sounds . . . “SUMMER Rain” is a local musical duo that had its inception in the aftermath of the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. This duo, Cath Scott and John Munday, were both affected by the fires. Soon after Black Saturday the Alexandra Acoustic Music Club was formed to provide a positive and creative outlet and have since met every Tuesday evening at the Alexandra Tennis Club rooms with John being a regular attendee. Eventually the concept extended to Yea where Rick and Leanne Vengeance established the Yea acoustic jam sessions for local musicians on the first Friday of the month at the community house. Cath and John met at one of
these sessions and soon discovered they had very similar interests musically so formed the duo “Summer Rain”. Summer Rain’s repertoire covers music from the 50s to the current day. Cath, the lead vocalist, plays the ukulele and percussion
while John plays 12 string guitar and sings backing vocals. The duo has experience in a variety of venues and can provide music throughout the shire. Celebrations such as weddings, birthdays, cocktail parties are all catered for.

FAWCETT Hall is located 14 kilometres north west of Alexandra in Spring Creek Road. Part of the hall building dates back to its establishment in 1882. Originally the hall served as a Mechanics Institute and public library. From 1901 to 1905 the building was used as Fawcett State School No.3393. In the 1960’s and early 1970’s the building served as a base for Melbourne artists, Archie and Millie Colquhoun. The hall is now under restoration by a dedicated committee and local community members who have come up with a great idea to fundraise and enable your name to be included in the hall’s history.

long stint of hauling passengers. The Fowler has been at the ATTM since 1985 and was formally a working locomotive on the Queensland sugar mills. The maintenance program has also included a cosmetic makeover to make her gleam. Volunteers have prepared displays in the museum rooms that highlight local history including the Rubicon timber industry from the 1890’s to 1950’s. The Alexandra Railway Station is 102 years old and houses three museum rooms. The main room was the parcel and ticket office for the station master and staff. Timber from the narrow gauge tramway was unloaded here from Rubicon, and broad gauge trains were loaded with timber, supplies and parcels for the trip to Melbourne.

Never too old . . .
UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE
MURRINDINDI has its very own university for its oldies – Murrindindi East University of the Third Age with the slogan “keeping our seniors mentally interested, alert and connected” and new members are always welcome.
The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a voluntary community organisation that provides low-cost learning for older people, enabling them to keep mentally and physically active and alert. There are currently over 85 U3A chapters spread across Victoria. Each chapter is a member of U3A NetworkVictoria, which provides support for the creation and ongoing operations of each chapter. The Murrindindi East U3A Chapter was formed in 2010 with seed funding from U3A Network-Victoria. Membership of this local chapter has steadily grown over the last three years and now has in excess of 40 members who participate in a range of activities and also enjoy the social networking part of bringing a diverse group of people together. This provides a strong community bond between members and provides peer support to those who may be experiencing short or long term challenges. Most importantly, members

gain a great deal of satisfaction from the U3A activities and have a lot of fun. Classes and activities are many and varied. Murrindindi East U3A regularly conducts classes in Mahjong, Bocci, computer and iPad training, using a Smart phone, photography and creative writing. Other activities include walking or cycling the Great Victorian Rail Trail, the conversation hour (which in 2013 focused on Australian history) and the most popular ‘changing seasons’ which is conducted by the very popular and talented horticulturist, Geoff Olive. Geoff takes members on a journey of discovery and learning about the changing nature of our gardens across the seasons.
All of these classes and activities are provided free to members. Four times a year U3A arranges bus tours to interesting attractions. These trips have included visiting Melbourne to see the Tutankhamen Exhibition, the Johnson Collection, Parliament House and the Botanical Gardens. Other trips have included the Grace Kelly Exhibition in Bendigo, a circumnavigation of Lake Eildon and a visit to the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens. Trips planned for 2014 include a visit to the MCG and a 4 day trip to Canberra (subject to grant funding). The cost of these trips is kept as low as possible, using grant funds, to allow as many as possible to participate.
At the heart of the success of U3A is the volunteer nature of how the classes and activities are conducted. The majority of tutors and organisers offer their time for free. This is a great way for retired and semi-retired people to transfer their life skills to others. The Murrindindi East U3A welcomes new members and actively encourages new classes from people who feel able and willing to conduct sessions in subjects based on their own skills and experience. Membership enquires are welcome at the annual enrolment day in February or by contacting Thelma Lucas on 0409 414 857 or murrindindieast1@ gmail.com. The annual membership fee is $30 for a single and $50 for a couple.

Birds . . . Watching birds By Bob Tate EACH edition of this magazine I highlight a favourite place to walk and observe birds as well as describe one species of bird found in this area. The Alexandra bushland is a great place to find both birds and wildflowers (in season). It was originally part of McKenzie Reserve before settlement, but has been knocked around in recent times as it once formed part of the Alexandra tip. Walking to the far fence and turning right you can follow a walking track to complete a circuit. This will take about one hour and is steep along the fence. Turn back at two places, about halfway around the circuit, for a shorter walk. Follow Grant Street south, one kilometre past the entrance to McKenzie Reserve on your right. Turn left up a hill for 200 metres, then turn right up to the Lucky Mine lookout. Do not wander off the track because of old mine shafts. The yellow tailed black cockatoo This is the largest of the cockatoos found in this area. Its range extends from Blackall and the Eungella National Park in Queensland in a broad band down the east coast to the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, and includes all of Tasmania.

OF THE MURRINDINDI SHIRE
The bird is around 60 centimetres long with yellow panels in its tail and yellow ear coverts (patch behind the eye) and there are pale scallops on most of the feathers of the body and wings. The only difference between the sexes is that the female has a whitish bill and grey eye ring, whereas the male has a grey bill and red eye ring. Its habitat ranges widely from rainforests to heath land and it can often be found here in our pine plantations. It has adapted very well to this food source, stripping off the cones and eating the seeds. Other favourite foods include grubs found inside many trees; the cockatoos can often be observed in the bush hacking into a wattle tree to the extent that the tree falls over. Reward one big grub! They will likewise attack eucalypts and banksias, looking for grubs, and the seeds of pine, banksias and hakeas. They are nomadic throughout their range, migrating to their nesting areas in the mountains and then returning to other areas later. Due to their size they require very large trees with hollows at least 18 centimetres at the entrance to nest. The inside is enlarged to around 30

BUXTON TROUT FARM
After 26 years in the business, having withstood his fair share of trials and triumph, Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm owner Mitch MacRae couldn’t imagine life anywhere else. Photo by Paul Jones. By Tammy Lovett REARING 80 tonne of fish or 300,000 plate-sized rainbow trout each year is no easy feat. And if anybody knows, it’s Mitch MacRae. For more than 26 years, Mitch and wife Deb have owned Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm, and each year that’s how many fish they produce. The couple bought the farm in 1988. With a background in graphic design and limited farming experience, their
decision to take on a trout farm was certainly a bold one. Mitch says over the years he has watched his farm grow, but it hasn’t been without its trials, having endured years of drought, fire, flood and extreme temperatures. Five years ago the farm lost all its stock and some of its infrastructure in the Black Saturday bushfires and faced the decision to close it’s doors or begin the arduous task of starting again. Mitch and Deb chose the latter.
Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm was the first commercial trout farm in Australia. After its original owner lobbied to pass legislation in Parliament to allow the commercial sale of trout, the farm opened its doors in 1958. As one of the few trout farms in the region to cater for tourists, Mitch says it’s a part of what makes the farm unique. “It’s becoming more and more popular as an experience for people that want to get out into
the great outdoors and introduce fishing to their kids but might not have the experience or equipment,” Mitch said. “They want the convenience of fishing in a pleasant, natural environment with a guaranteed catch. We supply rods and bait, or people can test their own.” Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm now attracts more than 35,000 visitors each year and this number is growing. Besides trying their hand at catching the big one and

cooking up lunch on the barbecues provided, Mitch says customers like knowing where their food comes from. “The gravity fed water supply originates from the snowfields of Lake Mountain, before cascading down Stevensons Falls and through its streams providing the perfect place to grow a clean natural food. No antibiotic chemicals or growth hormones are used on our farm.” “Our farm is a vertically integrated experience; we hatch the fish here and sell them ready to eat. It’s environmentally friendly, sustainable and locally produced,” Mitch said.
Cosette DiPardo hooks her first fish at Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm with a little help from mum Carol.
In the years since Mitch and Deb took over the farm they have introduced a range of produce that now
includes smoked trout, pate and hand-milked caviar, which features on menus in Australia’s top wineries, at markets in Melbourne and restaurants across the country. Customers can also stock their dams with live fish from the farm. Almost three decades after the couple moved to the area from Melbourne for a tree change and to try their hand at fish farming, Mitch says he couldn’t imagine himself anywhere else. Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm is located at 2118 Maroondah Hwy Buxton and is open everyday from 9am to 5pm. For news, pricing, recipes and more, log on to www.buxtontrout.com.au or phone 5774 7370.

Once you’ve finished lunch you can take a wander around the remains of the old town and read the interpretive signs to discover what life was like back in its timber milling heyday. Running Creek Circuit – Kinglake National Park If you’re looking for something a little more challenging to get away from it all, then this 7.8km walk is for you. You’ll need to be fit and have about three hours to complete the walk, which is steep in sections. Those who loved this walk before the 2009 bushfire will probably love it even more now, with stunning previously-unseen views and the creek running clearer than ever.

Walking amongst giants . . .
Above: a breathtaking view from Kala Pattha (5545m) as the moon hangs high above Mount Everest and the setting sun turns the peaks pink. Below: Murrindindi Guide writer Tammy Lovett trekking in the Himalaya. By Tammy Lovett BLANKETED by blue sky and hemmed in by snowcovered peaks, I’m standing 5,300 metres above sea level, where the dreams of thousands have been made and broken. At Mount Everest Base Camp, high in the Himalayas of Nepal, it’s mid November and there is hardly a soul around. However, each year around May it becomes unrecognisable, as it’s transformed into a temporary village for those making a summit bid on the world’s highest peak. At 8,848 metres Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. It has inspired men and women to risk their lives getting to the top for almost a century. In recent times Everest fever has spread. Each year thousands of trekkers 34 – Murrindindi Guide – Autumn 2014
descend upon the region to catch a glimpse of the giant peaks and to walk in the footsteps the first climbers would have taken to reach the top of the world. At base camp, at the foot of Mount Everest, I’m almost two and a half times higher than the tallest mountain in Australia (Mount Kosciuszko 2,228 metres) and more than five kilometers higher than Murrindindi Guide HQ in Alexandra. With less than half the amount of oxygen found at sea level, my body is feeling the altitude. My appetite has vanished, headaches are almost always present and nausea comes and goes. I’ve trekked nine days to reach this point, my body is exhausted and I cannot begin to imagine the strength it takes to stand on top of the world, still some 3,000 metres above.
I grew up in Narbethong, half a world away from Nepal. I went to school at Alexandra Secondary College and after completing a Bachelor Degree in Journalism I began writing for publications in Victoria and Western Australia. For the past year I’ve been working and travelling
in Asia and the United Kingdom, while continuing my love for storytelling by writing for Murrindindi Guide. At Murrindindi Guide we love a good story and we’d like to hear yours. If you’ve got a tale to tell or a story idea contact us at publishing@ friedel.net.au.

Granite grind . . .
LAKE MOUNTAIN
THE Murrindindi Cycle Club is entering its fifth year and has gone from strength to strength, with a growing membership base, and for the second year is organising the Lake Mountain Granite Grind mountain bike race on Saturday 22nd February. The club took over the running of the race in 2013 when a change of management at Lake Mountain meant either the club take over, or the event may die; part of the club’s mission statement is to support local cycling events so it was a natural fit.
With financial support from Tourism Victoria and Yarra Valley Cycles this year’s event should be better than ever. The race has distances and categories for just about everyone. There are one and three lap classes for solos, a six lap class for pairs and a short, kid’s fun race. Each lap is 10 kilometres long and has 430 meters of elevation gain, which is a fair bit, but it means there is also 430 metres of great downhill. The staff at Lake Mountain includes several enthusiastic mountain bikers, so the trails are designed and built for great riding; fun, smooth flowing sections are interspersed with rocky

granite sections, with some slick rock riding thrown in for good measure. It makes for a rewarding trail system that challenges but doesn’t intimidate, is super fun and when it is all over you know you’ve been mountain bike riding. A new addition for this

year’s event is a two day free demonstration of bikes from Yarra Valley Cycles, showing off all the new technology in mountain bike design, including electronically controlled suspension systems. On Sunday there is a 32 kilometre downhill tour from
Lake Mountain to Marysville via 4 wheel drive tracks, with a shuttle back to Lake Mountain. A great weekend for the family, whether racer, tourer, interested in trying out a new bike, or a billy lid. For full details go to www. murrindindicycleclub.com.

Something Eildon fishing report By Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle LAKE Eildon is sitting a little below the 86 per cent mark and the warmer weather has certainly fired up the natives. Cod and yellow belly are being caught from one end of the lake to the other, and around the Eildon dam wall cod up to 30 pounds have been reported regularly, with one very large one being taken on Boxing Day; he looked like a real thumper. Yellow belly have been reported up to 17 pounds. A variety of large bibbed lures in darker colors such as purple, pink, black and gold that dive to 20 feet, are the way to go. Spinner baits in the same colors, cast in close to the bank, are also working well. Red fin are taking worms, yabbies and bobbers but the majority of reports have been that they are small in size, with only a couple being 42 centimetres and 36 centimetres. MacDonald Island, Jerusalem Creek and Fraser camping ground are the best areas to target. Large brown trout are being caught at the moment on stump jumpers, tassie devils, soft plastics and worms. The Pondage is going off at the moment; it has received the last of its brood stockings for this year, with the average size for the brown trout being 1.5 kilograms and the rainbows 1.4 kilograms. As usual the home made doughs and power baits are proving effective. Gold krocs, pink tassies and warlock lures are back in action chasing the trout as well. This season has seen a massive hatching of cicadas, apart from the noise these guys have also been a large part of the trout’s diet (and everything else that lives on the pondage) so surface poppers and smash mouth lures have been picking up the odd trout too. At this time of the year irrigation and power demands make it almost tidal, however the reports
Paul Mercoulia with a 1.4 kilogram rainbow trout caught in Eildon Pondage. coming from the Eildon Caravan Park are all exceptional, even when the Pondage is on the fill the lures are working well. The Tail Race, Cemetery Point, the Main Bridge and Bourke Street are all producing good sized trout. Big River has had small rainbows being taken on worms and vibrax bladed lures, it has been a bit of a battle fighting off carp for those in the camping grounds closer to the lake. The Goulburn River has settled a bit after large flushes of environmental entitlements and the trout are now starting to take hoppers and ant pattern flys, worms, celtas, tassies, and a few on power bait. The Rubicon is producing small rainbows on spinners and flys, with a report of a 13 pound brown being caught on scrubbies twice. All in all the fishing here in Eildon has really fired up and the natives look like being on the bite for a while. Catch you later, Gaz.

Wonder dog . . . By Emily Friedel
“TRUDIE the Wonderdog literally saved our little boy [and] my lives from a very angry copperhead! It was rearing up [and] striking at me (thankfully I kept it’s attention on me [and] not our 2 [year old]) and Trudie charged in and threw it away.” Only two months prior to her heroic deed, Trudie was going to be put down; like so many other dogs that are dumped or left at pounds or shelters every year, her time had run out. Luckily, the Australian Working Dog Rescue Incorporated (AWDRI) was able to save her and that’s how she came to be our second AWDRI foster dog. As a relatively highly-strung and very energetic Kelpie, time in the shelter had been particularly hard on Trudie. Two other AWDRI volunteers had helped transport and dog-sit Trudie until we could pick her up. She panted and fidgeted on the back seat of the ute for the two hour drive home, stressed and no doubt confused by being in yet another strange place with more strange people.
hit home that not only Trudie was lucky to have AWDRI’s intervention, but also the family who got to be the recipient of her unwavering loyalty and unconditional love. If you are looking for a dog (or puppy) it really is worth considering adopting, there will be one out there that will be as perfect for you as Trudie is for her new family. We speak from experience: we kept our first foster after two adoption applications fell through and we haven’t regretted the decision for a moment (nor has our other dog, the two adore each other). If you are interested in adopting a working dog, or even volunteering as a foster carer, please check out the AWDRI website: http://www. workingdogrescue.com.au. You can also find started AWDRI dogs at Yarra Valley Working dogs: http://www. yarravalleyworkingdogs. com.
Trudie, the wonder dog.
It took a good two weeks before Trudie’s anxiety began to subside and she started to come out of her shell. We discovered she LOVED swimming and daily walks to the dam for some fetch in the water put a big Kelpie grin on her face. Within six weeks Trudie had found her dream home: a young family who could lavish her with attention and even take her on regular trips to the beach to indulge her love of water. When we got the message from the adoptive family about Trudie’s incredible lifesaving snake throw, it really

Tour de cure . . .
EILDON
Tour de Cure is a cycling foundation dedicated to curing cancer. Since 2007 the Tour de Cure has raised over $10 million and funded 137 vital cancer research projects, support and prevention projects helping Australian men, women and children. Tour de Cure’s goal is to share their ‘BE FIT, BE HEALTHY, BE HAPPY’ cancer awareness message. LOCAL Craig Deane has been part of Eildon for over 25 years. Craig loves to share Eildon with all his friends and family, so much so that he has invited the entire Tour de Cure team, including Mark Beretta, to visit this April. Craig is training hard as he prepares to ‘ride to cure cancer’ on Tour de Cure’s Sydney to Hobart Signature Tour, starting 28th March. Craig along with a team of 90 Australian men and women will ride 1,576 kilometres to raise money for cancer research. They will be visiting Eildon on 2nd and 3rd April.
The Signature Tour Team will share Tour de Cure’s ‘be fit – be healthy- be happy’ cancer awareness message and awareness packs to over 5,000 men, women and children on route. Given the statistic that “one in three cases are preventable” it is important all men, women and children know they can make healthy life choices and prevent cancer. Craig joined the Tour de Cure in 2012 so he could help raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. Craig has had four close friends die from cancer over
the past 15 years, and his younger sister has a form of cancer called Multiple Myeloma, which is bone marrow cancer, a form of cancer that currently has no cure. Hence his driving reason to be involved with the Tour de Cure and raise money for research. “The only chance people like my sister have of survival is through researchers finding a cure, and the generous donations from the general public that fund these researchers,” Craig said. You can show your support
for this cause by being part of the Eildon’s Tour de Cure visit. Everyone is invited to join in Tour de Cure’s community dinner on Wednesday 2nd April at the Golden Trout Hotel at 6pm plus join Mark Beretta and the local school kids at the Lion’s Park Rotunda from 6am-9am on Thursday 3rd April. To participate in the tour Craig needs to raise at least $12,000. You can support Craig’s fundraising by visiting www.tourdecure.com.au and search Craig Deane.

ALEXANDRA & DISTRICT MOTORCYCLE CLUB
By Roger Birtchnell AS THE sting goes out of our Aussie summer and a cooler autumn approaches, the club prepares for another busy year. Our club property, ‘Skyline Ridge’ provides action-plus for members, their kids and guests, in a safe environment, where licences and registration are not required. Here at this unique ‘members only’ facility, kids of all ages can gain experience and skills on the many and varied tracks on the 630 acre property picking up a few pointers from other members, who are more than happy to share their knowledge. For those with a competitive streak, our Club Championship Series soon sorts the men from the boys (and girls!), as they chase the various class trophies, presented at our Christmas break-up and presentation night. ‘Skyline Ridge’ is supported financially by our two popular annual rallies, with each attracting between 400 to 600 riders from all over the state . . . and beyond. The Kenda Rally will be run on Sunday 4th May and takes in the picturesque bush trails around Eildon and Rubicon, while the Sawmill Rally in October-November treats riders to some of the best dirt-bike action there is on offer in the beautiful forests around Mansfield and Merrijig. The Alexandra & District Motorcycle Club is very much a family club and new members are always welcome. For more information phone Steve Roissetter on 0412 239 406. PART 6 ~ BACK TO THE BEES
By Emily Friedel
knock the bees into that. If I’d known how long it was going to take I would have packed water and snacks too . . .
MY husband and I been keeping a single hive of bees for just over a year now. It has been a steep (but very enjoyable) learning curve.
Poor Rohan was shooed inside the moment he arrived home from work to get ready and we rushed out to where the swarm was, hoping it hadn’t already left. Thankfully when we arrived it was still there and didn’t look like it was going anywhere anytime soon.
Recently, we took our beekeeping endeavours to the next level and caught a swarm of bees. The day before our second wedding anniversary, I took a different route into town (due to the ute being very low on fuel – the usual route would have been a nightmare if that fuel had run out mid journey). Well, it must have been fate because I spotted what looked very much like a swarm of honeybees hanging from a branch on the side of the road. Unable to stop for fear of not being able to get going again if the fuel had dropped too low, I continued into town, with my mind racing to come up with a swarm-catching plan! From the quick glance I got, it looked like the bees were a fair way off the ground, certainly too high to get without a ladder and probably best done as a two person operation (bees and ladders are a notoriously bad combination). So, I decided to wait until Rohan got home from work and then we could tackle the swarm catching together.
The swarm of bees on a tree branch by the side of the Maroondah Highway. The next few hours were some of the longest of my life. I ran around like a headless chook getting together a swarm catching kit (worrying the whole time that the bees might take off ): The kit consited of: • overalls and veils • the biggest cardboard

box I could find an empty bee hive a big white sheet a step ladder a pole with part of a cardboard box stuck to the end to knock the bees off if we couldn’t reach them a big paper bag in case we could get close enough to

We laid the sheet out under the swarm and decided the big paper bag would be the best thing to catch them in. We tried to set the step ladder up to reach them but couldn’t get it stable, so decided against it. The solution presented itself when Rohan remarked that bees were checking out the inside of the ute, probably because it smelt like lemongrass oil after having the bait hive sitting in it: the ute! We parked the ute under the swarm, set the hive up in the tray, put on overalls and veils, and decided who was doing what: Rohan would hold the bag under them and I would give the branch a good shake. I stood on the roof of the ute, Rohan in the tray and we collected about two thirds of

the swarm with a couple of good shakes. Rohan copped a sting on the hand, but this was probably because a bee got stuck between his hand and the paper bag. Rohan shook the bagful of bees into the bait hive, I put in the remaining frames, we put the lid on and watched, waiting to see if the rest of the swarm would go in. We broke down the big cardboard box to give them some shade in the hope they’d find our hive more attractive. While we waited, Rohan noticed bees flying in and out of a hollow high up in a dead tree no more than 20 metres away. Then he noticed more flying out of a fork in a tree about 10 metres away. The fact that our swarm probably came from one of these two feral colonies made us even happier because of the following. • These feral colonies probably survived last year’s terrible summer without any assistance, then made it through winter on their own: they are tough and about as locally adapted as you could get. • There must be decent fodder close by for them to have built up enough to swarm – we only live a few kilometres away
Rohan Dodds waiting patiently while the swarm makes its way into the hive. Bees are generally very docile when swarming. so hopefully that means bees at our place will also have access to plenty of food. • We now know a great spot to put bait hives to catch other swarms. After fifteen minutes or so it didn’t look like the rest of the swarm was too keen to move into the hive so we thought we’d get the last of the bees off the branch and empty them onto the sheet in front of the hive in the hope that they’d go in.
majority of the bees were in the hive. We sealed the hive, strapped the lid on, strapped it into the tray and slowly drove back home, very hungry, thirsty and getting tired.
This worked, but was a much lengthier process than anticipated… Finally, almost four hours after we’d arrived the

Saddle tramps . . . THE Marysville Saddle Tramps was formed over 30 years ago to provide local horse riders with a safe environment to enjoy their horses, under the guidance of other more experienced members.
The late Ralph Wait, one of the founding members, was a driving force in providing the youth of the area with an opportunity to learn as much as they could about their horses. The Inaugural Ralph Wait Memorial Ride, to be held in Marysville from Friday 2nd May to Sunday 4th May, will bring riders from all over Victoria to Marysville to enjoy the fabulous riding we have on our doorstep. Riders will be treated to a fully catered weekend showcasing local businesses and will include time to enjoy some of the local attractions.
All are invited to support the club, and have a great night out attending the Saturday dinner, featuring music by Dennis Tucker. Funds raised over the weekend will be used to
build the Saddle Tramps new clubrooms in Gallipoli Park. The club also runs many events including weekend rides, training days, competitions, dances, social functions and fun days.
For more information on the Marysville Saddle Tramps please go to www. marysvillesaddletramps.com. au or for enquiries on the Ralph Wait Memorial Ride please call Jamie on 0447 608 899.
