Turning turtle. . . . Kara Lauder from Toolangi co-wrote a children’s book based on her experiences conducting flatback turtle research in Western Australia.
Monty C Turtle Learns to Swim! By Emily Friedel MONTY C Turtle emerges from his egg on an island beach off the coast of Western Australia, only to find his turtle siblings have already left. Monty, much to his dismay, is late for the big swim.
In the beautifully illustrated children’s book, Monty C Turtle Learns to Swim!, Monty’s journey begins on that fateful morning when he hatches to find himself left behind. His real journey, however, began in the minds of Kara
Lauder and Dr Mick Guinea while working on a flatback turtle monitoring project on Delambre Island in Western Australia. “Every turtle breeding season there is a team of us that stay on the island and monitor the turtles. We
put ID tags on the females that come to shore, as well as count the numbers each night. We also test for light pollution from the coast and sometimes put satellite trackers on a few of the females,” says Kara. Kara’s affinity with nature

a published author one day. Dr Mick, who has published many academic papers, had a dream of writing children’s stories about the animals he loves so much. When they put their heads together, Monty C Turtle was born. Female flatback turtles have been dragging themselves out of the sea and onto the beaches of what is now the Australian coastline to lay their eggs since dinosaurs roamed the earth. developed at a young age. She grew up in Toolangi surrounded by rainforest and her father was a forest ranger who instilled a deep respect for the environment in his children. “How could you not grow up to love the environment living in a place like Toolangi?” says Kara. Kara’s work as an Environmental Monitoring Officer in the mining industry led her to the flatback turtle research. Flatback turtles are endemic to Australia and were around long before humans 12 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016
inhabited the land. “For almost 100 million years the laborious crawl from the surf to the dunes has been repeated by countless generations of female flatback turtles determined to deposit their eggs beneath the sun-warmed sands,” says Dr Mick. Unfortunately, human activity is taking its toll on the species. Internationally the conservation status of flatback turtles is listed as data deficient, but in Australia it is understood that they face numerous challenges to their continued survival.
“The States and Territories recognise the impending threats of habitat destruction, feeding ground disruption and light pollution from coastal facilities on all life stages of flatback turtles. The mining industry now supports basic research into the impacts of their activities,” says Dr Mick. For Kara and Dr Mick, monitoring turtles became more than just a scientific endeavour – it also provided a creative outlet. Kara has always enjoyed writing poems and stories, and liked the idea of being
“Monty C Turtle was written in the hopes to give children an awareness of turtle nests on beaches, as well as teaching them the different ways that some creatures move,” says Kara. During Monty’s quest to catch up with his sibblings, he meets other beach dwellers who try to teach him to swim by showing him how they move (which doesn’t work, of course, but Monty learns a lot along the way). Kara and Dr Mick wanted to include little known creatures in the story, which would not only get children asking questions, but also

Douglas the Sand Dollar, one of the creatures Monty encounters, will no doubt have this effect. When Kara was looking for an illustrator she tracked down an old childhood friend, Sunshine Herbert. At the time, Sunshine had worked as a commercial illustrator but had never illustrated a children’s book before. She found it both challenging and a lot of fun. “I loved that the story was based from true experiences with Kara and Mick . . . It really did make it so easy for character development, especially for Monty, as they had actually named one particularly determined hatchling Monty!” says Sunshine. Sunshine also published the book through her company Seedling Publishing. “I started Seedling because I was seeing so many amazing authors and fantastic stories turned away from established publishers,” says Sunshine. “We’re super

From left, Sunshine Herbert (illustrator and publisher), and authors Kara Lauder and Dr Mick Guinea. tiny at this stage, but we’re growing.” It was a very proud moment for Kara, Dr Mick and Sunshine when, in November 2013, Monty C Turtle Learns to Swim! was launched at Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium. It was a very fitting venue, complete with a real, live rescued sea turtle in attendance! In the book Monty’s story ends with success when, with the help of a wise old pelican, he finally figures out how to swim.
Monty isn’t the end of the story for Kara and Dr Mick, though. They have many more story ideas that will bring ocean creatures to life for children and will hopefully elicit the same love of nature that inspired Kara and Dr Mick in the first place. Their next book, Three Hermit Crabs, also published by Seedling Publishing, will be launched later this year at Seahorse World in Tasmania. (Look out for the intriguing mantis shrimp in this story.)

Don’t stop the music . . . Musician and music teacher Gary Soloman at White Lotus Performing Arts Centre in Narbethong. By Tammy Lovett
Magic Far Away Tree.”
IT’S BEEN one extraordinary journey for musician and music teacher Gary Soloman.
If you ask him which part of Australia he’s from he’ll tell you, “all of it.”
From the moment he picked up his first guitar, the one his mother bought him when he was ten, he hasn’t looked back.
Now, after a lifetime of travelling and touring, Gary finally has a place to call home; Narbethong. And it’s here he has established the Modern Life Music School and White Lotus Performing Arts Centre.
The guitar might have been cheap and it certainly made his fingers bleed, but it inspired a bond and love of music that continues to weave its way through Gary’s life. As a child, Gary lived life on the road; he attended 25 primary schools and was never in one place long. “The family was guided by my father’s restless spirit,” Gary said. “He did everything from journalism, sheep shearing, radio announcing, news reader for Channel 9, and a children’s show called the
So while the journeyman may have found somewhere to put his roots down, he certainly isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Gary and daughter Tallulah Lacey, a talented musician in her own right, are set to release their new album this year and with White Lotus Performing Arts Centre hosting a number of concerts, as well as a folk festival, in November things are as busy as ever. But this pace of life is
nothing new for the musician. Gary left home at the age of 15, and as fate would have it, met celebrated session bass player Ron Terry. Terry played with various national and international bands when they toured Australia, including Ray Charles and The Supremes, and was a session bass player for Channel 9. “I was lucky enough to be mentored by him,” Gary said. “He believed in me.” It wasn’t long before Gary was mixing with music industry elite. Taking to the stage at just 17 with renowned blues musician Bo Diddley, Gary’s musical voyage really set sail. “It was the best experience of my life, being up there, it felt like home,” he said. Since those early days Gary’s career has taken him around
Australia and back again, reflecting the constant movement of his childhood. Working with nationally and internationally renowned artists, travelling and performing has been his lifeblood. In the late 90s a collaboration with Marie Wilson saw Gary achieve Australian music chart success with songs “Next Time” and “Can’t Keep a Good Girl Down”, and it wasn’t uncommon for Gary to perform up to 200 shows per year. Songwriting is also something Gary began exploring in the 90s, releasing his first solo album in 1994. Gary now has five albums to his name, his most recent a collaboration with daughter Tallulah. Gary describes his music as contemporary pop rock. His upcoming album with Tallulah draws on the Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016 – 15
Tallulah Lacey takes to the stage ahead of their newest record release later this year. duo’s personal experiences. The record is intended to be a fresh start for the pair, marking a change in direction from their current record Hollywood Boulevard. “We’re trying to express positive things, things to be grateful for.” “We are trying to reinvent, to see things fresh and new again,” Gary said. “We’re really excited about it.” While Gary has had a successful career and continues to grow and develop his own music, seeing his students evolve and progress is another reward altogether. “I had a great mentor and part of my role is to pass that on,” Gary said. “There is a lot of talent out here.” The White Lotus Performing Arts Centre opened in November 2014 while his music school opened in 2011. It had been Gary’s vision to create a music institution, filling a void in the area for a sustainable and permanent performing venue and a place for students from children to 16 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016
adults to learn, grow and discover the joys of music.
Gary said. “It’s all about skill development.”
make a difference in people’s lives.”
“Music is something that needs to permeate the community,” Gary said.
“Developing personal confidence through performance; to teach people to value what they do.”
“There is something about music that takes you into another world, where everything seems good and safe,” he said.
“Never underestimate the power of music, and what it can do for people’s self expression, confidence and learning.”

“There was no permanent performing venue that is ongoing in this region.” “My whole concept was to build something cost effective and not compromise on the quality of the music.” It was in 2009 when Gary first spotted the overgrown and rundown property in Narbethong. Seven years later a recording studio, stage and music school are nestled amongst the towering gums and tranquility of what was a neglected post office. Its transformation hasn’t been easy but Gary says bringing it to life has been a “labour of love”. Since opening the school students have produced their own albums, begun songwriting, performing publicly and learning the technical side of producing music and concerts. “All the facilities are there. Everything is done in-house,”
One of Gary’s students, Marysville resident Lily Morrow first came to the Modern Life Music School when she was eight years old. Dalrymples . . . When Sharen and Terry Donovan came to Marysville 16 years ago they never could have imaged they would now own two awardwinning bed and breakfast businesses.
Awards for Dalrymples by Tammy Lovett SHAREN AND Terry Donovan had almost given up on finding their dream holiday home. Three years into their search the couple from Melbourne was on the verge of defeat, that was until they stumbled upon Melina, now known as Amelina Cottages, in Marysville. The Donovans purchased the property within ten minutes of laying eyes on it and almost instantaneously their love of Marysville and its community was sealed. That was 16 years ago. Today Sharen and Terry are the proud proprietors of Dalrymples Guest Cottages and Amelina Cottages. Late last year the couple received some exciting news. Dalrymples Guest Cottages
placed third in the RACV Star Ratings Gold List awards for Victoria’s best overall guest experience for selfcatering accommodation and Amelina Cottages placed ninth in the same category. Dalrymples also took out second place for the best overall self-catering guest experience in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, while Amelina Cottages placed sixth.
Modern styling and luxurious finishes create a relaxing space for guests at Dalrymples Guest Cottages in Marysville.
In 2015 Dalrymples Guest Cottages was also awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. All awards are based on guest reviews and the results left Terry and Sharen speechless. When the Donovans first came to Marysville looking for a holiday home they didn’t come looking for a business to go with it. But Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016 – 19
Tall gum trees, brightly coloured flowers and bushes along with hazelnuts, figs and kiwi fruit flourish in the gardens at Dalrymples Guest Cottages, providing the ideal home for birds and wildlife. fate had something else in mind and attached to Amelina was a small holiday rental business. “We didn’t even want to have a bed and breakfast,” Sharen said. “It’s funny how life brings you to something.” “We just knew it was the right thing to do.” After falling in love with the area, Sharen and Terry decided to make Marysville more than a holiday home. In 2002 Dalrymples Guest Cottages came on the market and within five weeks Sharen and Terry became fully-fledged Marysville locals, making the move
20 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016
permanent and becoming Dalrymples’ newest hosts.
“There’s a history, people come back,” Sharen said.
Bob and Di McNamara established the business in 1991; their country cottage décor and hospitality gave guests a lifelong affinity with Marysville and Dalrymples.
“It’s lovely to have families where the kids think it’s their home.”
Forty percent of those who visit Amelina and Dalrymples are returning guests. Sharen and Terry continue to welcome people who stayed at these bed and breakfasts years before they even laid eyes on them. “We have people who were married in Marysville 50 or 60 years ago and they still come back [to Marysville],” Terry said.
Sharen and Terry were busy making their own mark on their bed and breakfast businesses, however devastation struck in 2009 when both properties were razed to the ground in the Black Saturday bushfires. Today, Dalrymples and Amelina stand proud once more. Dalrymples reopened in 2012 and Amelina followed in 2013 thanks to Sharen and Terry’s fierce determination and love of their businesses,
home and community. A builder by trade, Terry constructed the four new Dalrymples cottages along with their home and four cottages at Amelina. Not afraid to push the architectural boundaries, Sharen and Terry chose a freeform style for their home and cottages at Dalrymples. This type of architecture is characterised by curved and flowing designs and irregular shapes. “There are only two straight walls in the house,” Sharen said. With no two beams or pieces of wood the same, the building process was
challenging for Terry, and time consuming. But it was something he took in his stride and the end result is outstanding. If you ever visit the Donovans or have the pleasure of being their guest you will instantly recognise Sharen’s flair for interior design and attention to detail, which perfectly complements their choice of architectural style. “I buy a cushion I love and build from there,” Sharen said. “I love it.” Two of the cottages at Dalrymples are an

Australian-Japanese style fusion, making the spaces elegant and modern while embracing simplicity. Vintage kimonos adorn the walls in these cottages alongside traditional Japanese works of art. The end product is exceptional. The other cottages embrace modernity while remaining warm and relaxing with elements of country style and luxury everywhere. It’s hard to imagine seven years ago barely a tree or shrub remained on the Donovans’ property. Today
their gardens are booming. Gum trees have shot up, brightly coloured flowers are in bloom; hazelnuts adorn their trees alongside figs and kiwi fruit. Birds and wildlife are thriving and make no secret of their presence, singing loudly for guests to hear. “We love doing what we’re doing, that’s why it has worked,” Sharen said. “We’re very passionate about it.” “It has to be a passion, you have to love doing what you’re doing.”
“We just want to do a good job and enjoy doing it,” Terry said. “And we’re not the only people in town to do that.” Sharen and Terry might not have come to Marysville looking for a business all those years ago, but that is what they found, and that is what they have thrived on and flourished in. They have made their businesses their own and their success is reflected in returning guests, awards and most importantly in their happiness and passion to continue doing it.

Great tracks cleanup . . . Above: Flinders Ranges after The Great Tracks Cleanup Crew have visited. Photo courtesy Judy Hoffman. By Emily Friedel KEITH HOFFMANN replies with only one word when asked what it’s like to look back at a stretch of desert road he’s just cleaned: “Great.” It’s the beaming face accompanying this one-word response, however, which gives real insight into how he feels about it. Five years ago, Keith saw a Landline segment on The Great Tracks Cleanup Crew. His interest was immediately piqued. “I thought what a great way to see that part of Australia and I agreed with the philosophy, looking after the joint because it’s been abused,” he says. The Great Tracks Cleanup Crew was started in 2007 by Police Sergeant Stuart Paxton of Leigh Creek in South Australia, who was fed up with roadside rubbish in his area so decided to do something about it. After seeing the Landline segment, Keith didn’t waste any time and hopped onto the Great Tracks website to apply for membership. He spent 12 months on the waiting list before he finally got a call inviting him to the next cleanup. Unperturbed by the 1200km drive from his home in Yea to Leigh Creek, Keith accepted the invite and hasn’t missed a cleanup since. Each year in July, Great Tracks runs an eightday cleanup trek in the South Australian
Keith and Judy Hoffman of Yea have been inspired by their trips with the Great Tracks Cleanup Crew in the South Australian outback and want to set up their own cleanup operation in Victoria. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016 – 23
Illegal dumping of rubbish is a serious problem in the desert.
The Great Tracks Cleanup crew picks up an average of 70 tonne of roadside garbage in South Australia every year.
outback, taking 35 people (strictly limited, hence the waiting list), ten 4WD vehicles with trailers and two trucks (one for supplies and one for the enormous amount of garbage collected). Sponsorship through various organisations covers the cost of food and petrol for volunteers. A surprising, and disheartening, amount of rubbish disfigures isolated desert roads. Some of it comes from birds or animals getting into bins at roadside stops, some of it is the result of illegal dumping. And it’s not all easy to shift. “Tyres are a bug bear. Every year we’ve picked up over 300 tyres. Ninety per cent would be truck tyres and sometimes you’ll pick up not only the tyre but the damn wheel, which is added weight,” says Keith.
‘Bugga Awards’ are handed out on cleanups for any mishaps along the way, including broken trailers. 24 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016
removing roadside waste is offset by breathtaking scenery and sightings of local wildlife. “You get to see some magnificent sunrises and sunsets,” says Keith’s wife Judy, who went on her first cleanup last year. “There are dingoes, emus, kangaroos, camels, horses, lizards and other reptiles too.” Judy, an avid photographer, documented the 2015 cleanup and took the opportunity to snap some shots of the extraordinary country they passed through. Another perk for the hard working rubbish pickers is the opportunity to see places that ordinary travellers can’t access.
“We average about 70 tonne of rubbish collected a year,” he adds.
“The year before last they actually took us on a guided tour of the facilities at the gas fields … We had lunch at their mess and they had 12 different types of ice cream!” says Keith with a grin.
The unglamorous task of
While cleaning up is taken
seriously, there is plenty of frivolity thrown in to make it a less onerous task. Last year Judy, who was warmly welcomed onto the crew, added her own brand of fun to the trip, emerging from her camper in a different costume each morning – everything from Lucifer to the Playboy Bunny. It seems Judy’s antics catalysed a new tradition and the whole crew is planning to dress up at this year’s cleanup, not only adding to the fun but also drawing attention to what they’re doing. Fun also comes in the form of ‘Bugga Awards’, which are given out for any mishaps along the way. Whoever accumulates the most during the trip gets a prize at the end. “We won it last year,” says Keith, “Judy dobbed me in, though.” “He ran over me!” Judy replies with mock indignation. “Ohhhh it was just a love tap,” says Keith, winking. Plenty of ‘Bugga Awards’ are handed out each year for busted windows (this happens even when the window is covered in protective cardboard), punctured tyres and broken trailers. Luckily, Great Tracks is exceptionally well organised and prepared for just about any eventuality. “My first year, a bloke with a tandem trailer … started off in good nick and by the end of it he went home with two wheels and one axle, but we repaired it twice en route,” says Keith. Keith and Judy, inspired by Great Tracks’ work in South Australia, plan to start their
own cleanup in Victoria. “All the South Australia crew want to come here and help us with it. In our preliminary planning we’ve picked five different areas in Victoria, one for each year, so we’ve got a five year plan covering as broad a range of Victoria as we can,” says Judy. “We plan to have it up and running in two years.” This year, in celebration of the Great Track Cleanup Crew’s 10th Anniversary, Landline will again accompany them on their trek. This time, though, instead of just watching it on the television, Keith and Judy will be part of it, helping to restore the unique beauty of our outback.
For Judy Hoffman, the cleanup trek also provides an opportunity to photograph stunning outback scenes.
Tyres are common amongst the rubbish found along desert roads in South Australia and each year the Great Tracks Cleanup Crew removes over 300 of them.
For more information on the Great Tracks Cleanup Crew go to the website: www. greattracks.com.au For more information on Keith and Judy’s clean up plans, to get involved or to become a sponsor, call Judy on 0427 973 228. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016 – 25

In this category only, beanies do not have to be wearable; just create the illusion of wearability. Each of the above categories includes a junior section and children are encouraged to enter. Knitting and crocheting classes are held in the Alexandra Library on Friday afternoons from 2pm, everyone is welcome. Last year the Murrindindi Beanie Festival was very well supported by the community and raised over $3,000, and a cheque of $2,000 was presented to Alexandra Rotary’s Emergency Wood program for the elderly and disadvantaged members of the community. Other Money raised is also available for local school children who would like to participate in school activities they would otherwise not be able to afford to attend. Jamieson Autumn Festival THE THIRD annual Jamieson Autumn Festival will be held this year on 23 April, the Saturday of the Anzac long weekend. Jamieson is awash with colour in autumn. Japanese maples, English oaks and giant redwoods paint the town with every conceivable shade of red, yellow and orange. It is an impressive sight and makes a splendid backdrop for the Autumn Festival. The Festival is a showcase for local talent, and given the tremendous diversity of that talent there is bound to be something for everyone. Events and exhibits will range from gold panning to blacksmithing, pottery to fine art, classic cars to bush cooking, gold nugget
throwing to a hay bale race. And there will be a cow poo lotto for those really looking for something different. There will also be music, song and poetry recitals on street corners, in front of buildings and on the stage in the main marquee. Many of the regular festival contributors will be back this year: • Julie Guppy will create a 45 minute painting at the new Jamieson Museum Gallery. • Di Kilford will conduct a pottery workshop, also at the Museum Gallery. • Jamieson Arts and Gardens will be operating in the Museum garden. • Liam Wilson will entertain with his world class street dancing. Left: Val Kirley participating in the gold nugget throw. • Ken Hopkinson will regale the crowds with his uniquely animated recitals of old bush poems. • Craig Eury will make whatever comes to mind on his forge. • Greg and Wendy will entertain the kids with gold panning. • Bruce Hargrave will organise a race of sorts between his penny farthing and those of his friend’s. The festival is run entirely by volunteers and sponsored by the Mansfield and District Community Branch of the Bendigo Bank. Events will run from 10am to 4pm on the Saturday and entry is FREE so it’s the perfect opportunity to see Jamieson in its glorious autumn colours while having fun with its multitalented residents. There will also be an Open Gardens and guided walk among significant trees of Jamieson on the Sunday, and a dawn service at Gerrans Reserve, followed by Gunfire Breakfast and Veterans’ Parade at 11am on the Monday (Anzac Day). A stainless reputation . . . Alexandra Stainless, which began in Rob Crigan’s back shed 18 months ago, is now operating out of a large commercial workshop and employs two local apprentices. From left, Brendan Whitnish (apprentice), Rob Crigan (Director), Rohan Dodds (apprentice), Chris Lynch (Director). DIRECTORS OF Alexandra Stainless, Rob Crigan and Chris Lynch, may have grown up in the city but they’re country boys at heart. They became friends as teenagers, living around the corner from each other, and used to spend their weekends camping at a friend’s farm in Rubicon. “I knew from a young age that this was where I’d end up living,” says Chris, “I’ve always been an outdoor person.” Chris’ boyhood prediction that he’d live in the Murrindindi area became a reality five years ago when he moved to Taggerty. It didn’t take long for Rob to follow suit and they hatched a plan to start a business together. They discovered a small niche in the stainless steel market waiting to be filled and in October 2014 decided
to go for it.
a massive deck,” says Chris.
ballooning workload.
Alexandra Stainless had humble beginnings in Rob’s back shed.
And there doesn’t seem to be any shortage of locals ready to make use of their diverse abilities.
Apprenticeships are something Rob and Chris understand and value highly, having both taken the apprenticeship route to their trade qualifications.
“That lasted about a week,” says Rob with a laugh, “before we had to find a factory somewhere.” Their strong work ethic and willingness to take on any job, big or small, led to success far beyond their initial expectations. “We’ll give anything a go,” says Rob. Chris and Rob have backgrounds in carpentry and steel fabrication respectively, and Rob adds that his “old man was a builder and sparkie”; between them they have a broad skill set and can offer an equally broad range of services. “We’re more like a jobbing shop, we can do everything from a bit of laser cutting to
“We have done some big projects for the Alexandra Hotel, Hedger Construction, Outdoor Education Group, and we are affiliated with DEWLP, CFA, and Goulburn Valley Water,” says Chris. “We have also started to do a lot of work with house boat builders and Eildon Boat Club itself.” Outgrowing Rob’s back shed after a week seems to have been a sign of things to come. The business expanded rapidly – “More than we could have hoped for,” says Rob. Within the first twelve months they were already too big for their first commercial workshop. They also took on a local apprentice, Brendan Whitnish, to help with the
Chris won numerous awards during his apprenticeship, including best first year, second year, third year and overall apprentice awards at a national level. “He even had his mug shot on a big flag outside of TAFE for a while,” says Rob, chuckling. Chris and Rob have strived to create a work environment where apprentices can make the most of their education and realise their full potential. “There’s no point just skating through to get to the end of the apprenticeship,” says Rob. Recently Brendan won the GoTAFE best first year metal fabrication apprentice award after completing his full Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016 – 33

Alexandra Stainless employed a second apprentice late last year and they want to “get more locals on board as the business grows,” says Chris. Their desire to be of value to the community extends beyond just employing locals, though. “Obviously fire’s a big part of things up here,” says Rob, “so we do volunteer CFA work as a way to give back. We’re down there every couple of days helping out, doing something.” They also encourage their employees to volunteer for the CFA, even offering to pay them for work time spent on CFA call outs. These days Rob and Chris can be found boating on the lake in their spare time, rather than building little dams in the Rubicon River as they 34 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016

Chris sums it up like this:
“Life is less complicated now, because everything is at our back doorstep. We’ve got the perfect balance between work and play.” For more information on Alexandra Stainless

Eildon Primary celebrates 100 years The following extract, outlining the history of Eildon Primary School, is from Eildon – The Whole Dam Story. Eildon Primary School (formerly Sugarloaf Waterworks School and Eildon Weir Primary). No 3931. The following information was prepared by Miss B Laurisen, Infant Mistress, and appeared in the Alexandra and Eildon Standard during 1968. The school 3931 Sugarloaf Waterworks was established on May 1st, 1916. The first head teacher was John W Smith.
Mr D Cullnery the secretary of the Labourer’s Union urged the establishment of a school at Sugarloaf Waterworks. The school was opened in a leased hall from the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission. George Trezise, a miner’s son, was the first pupil admitted. In May 1916, 61 pupils were enrolled. The parents petitioned against the unsuitability of the hall as a school room, and a new building was completed in February 1924. The site of this school was on 3 acres, 3 roods. This land was purchased for $50 per acre in 1922.

to 16 pupils in 1945 when grades 7 and 8 pupils were taken by bus to Alexandra Higher Elementary School. The school closed for a few months in 1942 because of staffing difficulties.
The name of the school was changed to Eildon Weir on 3rd October 1923. The building, which was opened in 1924, was a wooden structure consisting of two rooms each 26ft x 24ft and a cloakroom. The school was officially opened by Ern Mackerel M.P. the Country Member.
Ashley Cooper, a tennis player of world renown, was a pupil at Eildon Weir from 1944 to 1947.
During the 1930’s a lot of construction work led to a rise in attendance. In 1931, 241 pupils were on the roll. The hall which had been used previously as a school, was leased again during 1930-1933. The attendance dropped from 53 in 1937 to 26 in 1941, and down
38 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016
With the building of the second wall at Eildon Weir the enrolment of the school increased again. The site of the school was shifted in September 1951 to that of 16 acres bounded by Centre Avenue, High Street and Riverside Drive. In November 1951, 120 pupils occupied the present office and staff room block and two rooms of the old building which had been shifted to the new site. The present building of ten rooms and an office block was built
by AV Jennings under contract to State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, to an American design. This was handed over to the Education Department in November 1952, and subsequently purchased at a cost of 31,754 pounds, including the residence. In 1954, 283 pupils were enrolled, but the number dropped to 187 in 1955, as the work on the construction was nearing completion. It rose again with the establishment of Masonite and ACI factories to approximately 250, but each year there has been a slow decline in the number of pupils. The name of the school was changed again on June 19th, 1959 to Eildon Primary School. In 1932 the Australian Natives Association prize for school-grounds improvement was awarded to Eildon, under head teacher Jobling and again in 1961 under head teacher Henshaw. The school gained the Eildon Community Centre and the Parents’ Club carpeted all classrooms at the school from 1983 to 1985. In 1986 the school received a large grant to introduce computers for curriculum use. (end extract) The present school site is a little less than seven hectares and is currently the location of the Eildon Kindergarten (relocated here in 2002) and the multipurpose room (constructed in 2012).
Eildon Primary School students in 1953. On 7 December 2013 the time capsule buried in Australia’s bicentenary year was opened sharing photographs, pictures and stories of all the students at Eildon Primary School in 1988. This original material plus records from the subsequent 25 years was reburied, to be opened in 2038. In 2016 there are 42 students and five teachers and the principal, Victor Armstrong. This year the school celebrates 100 years with activities planned for May so stay informed through their Facebook page Eildon Primary School.

Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016 – 45
From right: Zanni Waldstein, Carlie Underhill (Community House Co-ordinator), Bridget Clarke and Jasper Dalziel.
Edible oasis at Yea Community Garden By Emily Friedel A THRIVING vegetable garden isn’t something normally associated with the local constabulary, but Yea Community Garden is happily challenging that perception. A few years ago, Yea Police kindly let Community Garden volunteers dig up their lawn and convert it into an edible oasis. Now when you walk up to the station entrance you are greeted by sprawling pumpkin vines, a vigorous corn crop, fruit trees and a watchful scarecrow. Don’t worry, if you feel like sampling some of this delectable produce you’re allowed to – you will not be descended upon by angry policemen. “The garden is there to be used – it’s for people to take produce from when they 46 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016
need it. Some people feel a bit funny taking food from outside the police station, but that is what it’s there for,” says Zanni Waldstein, the garden coordinator. Sergeant Trevor Connell from Yea Police echoes this sentiment and says that the garden is “good for policecommunity relations, and a good use of the space.” The idea for a community garden emerged from community discussions initiated in 2013 by Bridget Clarke, the Health and Wellbeing Development Officer at Yea and District Memorial Hospital. The idea then took off with funding from Sustainable Gardening Australia for a ‘garden pod’, which included garden beds, three workshops, soil, fruit trees and general support.
Being conspicuously located at the front of a police station certainly helps the garden be noticed, which ties in with the project’s primary goal: to raise community awareness about fresh food, health and the interplay between the two. “It’s all about making food growing more visible and accessible, sharing the knowledge of how to do it, enjoying ourselves gardening, sharing food and eating well,” says Zanni. Volunteers get stuck into the gardening at monthly working bees, and in between the dedicated ‘watering fairies’ (volunteers rostered for watering duties) tend the garden. In her role as Garden Coordinator, Zanni also potters around and keeps things ticking over between working bees.
Yea Community Garden also runs by donation workshops, which give participants practical gardening skills, enabling them to grow their own food gardens. The workshops cover everything from seed saving to wicking beds, with topics often being chosen in response to requests. Along with support from the Health and Wellbeing Development Officer and Yea Community House, the Community Garden engages with numerous other groups and organisations in the area. In 2014 and 2015, Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning students from Yea High School took part in the Break it Down Project, funded by the Hamer Sprout Fund. Students did a weekly ride
around town on a specially made cargo bike, collecting food scraps from residents and local businesses for composting at the Community Garden. In 2015 alone they composted and redistributed a whopping 6,000kg of waste! “There were quite a few [students] who really got into it, really enjoyed the chance to be … doing something positive in the community, and a couple of them pulled more than their weight in terms of doing extras like helping with plumbing work and throwing their backs into turning compost,” says Zanni. Produce from the garden is distributed so that it can easily find its way to the hands of anyone who might need it. The Community Food Table, situated in the Yea Library Foyer, is just one of the places the harvest ends up. Anyone is welcome to help
themselves to food from the table for free or by donation. The John Wallis Foundation and Sacred Heart Parish Council are currently funding the role of a part time project worker who engages local schools and helps them grow extra produce for the Food Table. Produce is also available at a donation stand in Mannafest Café (Yea Emporium). And of course the garden volunteers aren’t forgotten, being rewarded, literally, with the fruits (and vegetables) of their labour. Some of the produce is also used to support the free weekly community G3 Dinner, run by volunteers and catering for 30-60 people at a time. The Dinner, which has been going for nine years, provides locals with an opportunity to socialise over good food. “For some it might be the only meal they share with others during the
week . . . and for people who don’t necessarily cook for themselves it’s a good opportunity to eat a healthy, filling meal. It’s fun and it’s got a really great atmosphere,” says Zanni. Yea Community Garden is open to anyone who wants to learn more about food gardening or eating fresh produce: “Age or ability doesn’t matter… all welcome!” says Zanni. There are so many different ways to become involved (see the list below) that you’re bound to find something that suits you. And next time you’re walking past Yea Police Station feel free to have a wander around the garden, enjoy the greenery and don’t be afraid to pick whatever produce you may need! members of the honeyeater family measuring 310360mm.
Description The noisy friarbird (Philemon corniculatus) is a member of the honeyeater family with a distinctive naked black head, reddish eyes and a prominent knob (casque) at the base of its beak. It has a brown eyebrow, a white frilly collar around its neck, grey back, off-white abdomen and a white tip on the tail. It’s among the larger
The noisy friarbird is also known by several other names, including “leatherhead”, because of the bare, black part of its face. Distribution and habitat Noisy friarbirds are found from the tip of Cape York down the east coast to Melbourne and Gippsland and inland to the west of the Great Dividing Range in

They are migratory in the southern part of eastern Australia, and are a common spring-summer visitor to the Murrindindi area. After nesting they leave here and head for warmer northern climes. is profuse flowering, usually in the company of other honeyeaters including red wattlebirds, which are of a similar size and colour. They are widespread around Alexandra in the spring and early summer and I have seen or heard them in most of the areas mentioned in my flyer Where to Find Birds in Alexandra. The picture accompanying this article was taken in my garden just out of town.

Call The call is a series of deep, discordant “glumps”; loud guttural sounds that are not very attractive but certainly unmistakable. The call is used to mark an individual’s feeding territory. Diet Noisy friarbirds’ diet consists of nectar and insects. They frequent flowers of the native shrubs in gardens and are often seen with their bill deep into the flowers, feeding on the nectar. Unfortunately they also have a passion for fruit, sometimes making them unpopular with fruit growers. They spend the majority of their time feeding high up in trees, only venturing down to the ground occasionally.
Breeding The breeding season extends from July to January. Noisy friarbirds form longterm pairs and the female builds a large, cup-shaped nest that hangs from a horizontal branch or tree fork 1-3 metres above the ground. The nest is constructed with plant matter, such as bark and dried grass, and bound together with spider web. Noisy friarbird pairs may produce one or two broods in a season. Only the female incubates the eggs, but both parents defend the nest and feed the young. For more information see my flyer, Where to Find Birds in Alexandra, which is available at information centres in the shire.

Murray cod have been the big hit of the summer, with reports of thumpers between 100 and 130cm being caught in the main arm of Lake Eildon. However good size and numbers have been reported throughout the lake. Large bibbed lures that got you down to the 25ft mark, and a wide variety of colours were working well. Surprisingly enough baits were not a problem for these guys either, they were pretty much taking anything: bread, chicken fillets, bacon, sandwich ham, corn, Christmas turkey and then of course the scrubbies and yabbies as well. Similar tactics used on yellow belly had the same success but when it came to baits, the old scrubbies and yabbies were number one. Trout are a different story. The warm weather meant trout went down that little bit deeper and Paravanes and down riggers trolling Tassie Devils were the way to go.
Consecutive day hires are also available upon request
The Pondage did well early to mid morning and late in the afternoon, Power Bait, local dough and mud eye worked and a few were taken on small scrubbies under float as well. The gold Kroc and pink Tassie Devil are still the number one and two.

Here’s a quick tip for the best results in the preparation of yellow belly: If you plan on keeping them, fillet them straight away and place the fillets on paper towelling uncovered in the fridge over night. (They won’t stink the fridge out). It gives the flesh and the sometimes excess fat a chance to firm up and be easily removed. Lightly season and flour, use minimal oil and barbecue or grill.

Yosemite . . . Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016 – 57
Mirror Lake in Yosemite National Park. Visiting here in the off season was wonderful, we didn’t see another soul on the walk up to the lake, or at the lake itself.
Yosemite in off season by Emily Friedel OUR FOOTSTEPS crunching over rubble, along with the occasional bird call or squirrel scuttle, were all we heard as we wound our way through the mountains. It was blissfully quiet.
Rohan, Emily and Steve in front of the iconic Tunnel View, which is covered in swarms of tourists during the warmer months, was clear and quiet on this late winter morning. 58 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016
What we saw was equally serene. Gigantic granite rock faces rising up out of pine forests to meet an intensely blue sky; immaculate rivers and lakes with water so clear you could see their smooth stone beds; giant sequoia groves that felt like an excursion into prehistory; layer upon layer of snow-capped mountains
Even the mountain lions seemed to respect the off season tranquility and thankfully we didn’t need to put the “If attacked, fight back!” advice into practice. extending as far as the eye could see. It was pristine, peaceful and free from hordes of tourists. This was Yosemite in the off season. Yosemite National Park covers around three hundred thousand hectares in upstate California, including part of the incomprehensibly vast Sierra Nevada mountain range. It holds iconic landforms such as El Capitan and Half Dome, and North America’s highest waterfall – 739 metres – Yosemite Falls. It is designated as a World Heritage area and rightly so because it is awesome (in the true sense of the word). The off season in Yosemite runs from about October to May, and the general rule is the colder the quieter, so from December to March the number of visitors drops off significantly. The three of us – my husband Rohan, our San Franciscan friend/self-
appointed guide Steve and me – visited Yosemite National Park just as winter was releasing its grasp and making way for spring. We were treated to a magical mix of crisp air, clear sunny days and, in places, fresh snowfall. Experiencing the park’s grandeur and rugged beauty in solitude made the trip all the more memorable. We didn’t have to fight to get a good view, or try to work around people’s brightly coloured outdoor gear to capture unblemished vistas, or have a cacophony of human voices disrupting the tranquility. We could connect with Yosemite undisturbed. We felt particularly lucky when Steve described what the park is like during the busy season. He’s spent many vacations camping at Yosemite with his family and said that during the warmer months it’s crowded and noisy, with tents packed
in like sardines and music blaring from vehicle stereos. This isn’t really surprising when you find out that around four million people visit Yosemite every year. The trip with us was the first time Steve had visited Yosemite in the off season, he was amazed by just how quiet it was. He said he’d love to take his family back at that time of year. Of course there are some disadvantages to shying away from the peak season: the waterfalls aren’t at their best due to rivers freezing and when we were there the track to the summit of Half Dome was closed (the ice made it unsafe). For us, however, the pros of Yosemite’s off season far outweighed the cons. There are also activities available that can only be done during the winter, and while we didn’t take advantage of them, I should imagine that skiing, ice skating, snowboarding or
even snowshoeing your way around Yosemite would be amazing. Maybe next time… Renowned American naturalist, John Muir, wrote in his book Our National Parks: Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. I would argue that the best time to experience this sort of peace in Yosemite is during the off season. For more information on Yosemite National Park go to the US National Park Service website: www.nps.gov/yose And for specific information on Yosemite in winter, including snow sports, take a look at: http://www. yosemitepark.com/winter-inyosemite Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016 – 59

Shinboners seeking success By Tammy Lovett
THERE’S A fighting spirit within the Thornton Eildon District Football Netball Club. With a new president and vice president at the helm, the ‘Boners know the road ahead isn’t going to be easy, but they’re determined to see the club thrive. In 2014, following a three year recess, then president Wayne Kupke said the committee had signed on for two years, however he couldn’t predict what would happen after 2015. John Creighton was elected president at the club’s 2015 annual general meeting and Anita Keddell stepped up to take the role of vice president. John’s bond with the club spans 30 years and in that time he has gone from supporter to player, to coach, vice president and now holds the top job, an honour he never thought would be bestowed upon him. The new president is under no illusion this year could be one of the hardest the club will face. “We know this year is going to be a difficult year,” he said. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2016 – 61
Above: determined to see his club succeed, John Creighton has taken on the role of Thornton Eildon District Football Netball Club president. Left: Thornton Eildon District Football Netball Club vice president Anita Keddell. “I always thought the third year is going to be the hard one.” In 2011 dwindling numbers and a lack of support forced the ‘Boners into recess. For the first two years John said the excitement of the club getting back on its feet attracted players, however he said the club couldn’t rely on that into the future. “The main key for the future is to have juniors and continued growth,” he said. “Our focus this year is juniors, it’s a massive one, we need to look at it or we’re not going to be sustainable.” Join us on Facebook for updates & specials

involved was because we’ve got kids that age, and we know how much enjoyment we got out of it as kids,” he said. Seniors coach Brad Coller will be back in 2016, with co-coach Daniel King and assistant coach Shane Parker, while Paul Hilder will coach the reserves. Brad has coached the seniors side on and off since 2004 and was coach during the 2007 season which saw the ‘Boners take home the premiership flag. Under Brad’s leadership the seniors side achieved on field success over the past two years, making the finals last year while narrowly missing out on a grand final berth in their first year back. But for Brad success isn’t only reflected in the scoreboard at the end of a match. “The club’s success isn’t just based on wins and losses,” he said. “It’s the people involved that
make the club successful.” This year the focus is on growing player numbers to combat the migration of participants, while remaining competitive on field. “We’ve got a good chance of making finals,” John said. “As long as we’re still out there, fielding a team and everyone is enjoying themselves that’s what is most important.” This season Lucy Wallis will coach the club’s netballers, with assistant Ash Creighton. The club expects to have three teams in the competition this year and is looking to improve on the past two years, which have been challenging. While player numbers and youth involvement are crucial in the fight to keep TEDFNC alive, off field club secretary Kristy Creed is working hard to secure grants to make physical improvements to the club.

While it’s clear the club still has a long way to go to ensure it remains viable into the future, an enthusiastic committee and new leaders are working hard to realise that goal, but they need continued community support and sponsorship. “It’s an easy going and friendly club, don’t be afraid to get involved,” John said. “Come along, if you’re doing nothing on a Saturday bring the kids and have a day at Thornton, meet some new people.” The ‘Boners will take to the field for the first time in 2016 when they take on the Alexandra Rebels on 16 April at Rebel Park in Alexandra.

Repeating Patterns Until 14 March
the last five-six years along a ‘patterns’ theme.
‘Repeating Patterns’ is a photographic exhibition by Cindy Ferguson, which features images of Italy, England, Canada and Australia, and is a showcase of a different style of her work – photos taken over
The images are printed with specialist UV inks that are scratch, water and fade resistant onto a stone composite (which includes polystyrene, a strong yet lightweight waste product that takes over 100 years to
break down in landfill). They are box framed in recycled timber; using hardwood fence palings and flooring, which would otherwise end up being chipped. A creative way to support the environment and the arts! A catalogue accompanies this exhibition, which tells
the story behind the images. Cuts Like a Knife Opens 6pm Friday 18 March with drinks and nibbles. ‘Cuts Like a Knife’ is a joint exhibition of linocuts by printmakers Libby Schreiber and Maria Barbaro. Libby Schreiber, who

formally trained as a painter, has found that printmaking (and specifically linocuts) has enabled her to find her individual style and passion for creating art. Libby has developed a style that is decorative and whimsical and has been exhibiting for more than 10 years. She draws the image onto linoleum, which she then carefully carves and prints in her studio. Libby creates mainly black and white prints, but also produces some colour reduction prints, containing stylised, yet familiar subjects. Carving for Libby is not only therapeutic but she thoroughly enjoys the spontaneity it brings to her work, creating textures and an atmosphere that would be difficult to produce in other mediums. Libby has received numerous
awards for her printmaking and her works are held in a number of public collections. Born in Wangaratta, Maria Barbaro’s earliest memory of being creative was designing magnificent gowns for her paper doll cut out of Ginger Rogers when she was aged seven or eight. She had shoe boxes full of her unique paper dresses ready to clip onto her cutout Ginger. No doubt this led to her career in the fashion industry, where she was fortunate enough to work with the late Norma Tullo (one of the innovative young designers of Melbourne’s 1960s), spending much of her days drawing beautiful gowns. “I love drawing” says Maria, and “to sketch with free expressive line is such a joy for me.” About ten years ago, Maria wanted to extend her art, and so took up pastels,

Workshops with Louise Foletta Louise is very pleased to offer workshops again in her Studio 2427 in a beautiful location out of Buxton. In 1975 the first summer school was held at Acheron Park using the old dairy for the studio. The classes included painting, sculpture, macramé, and life drawing and later special classes for children and teenagers. The new studio is both comfortable and light filled with views of Mt Cathedral, across the flats and into the garden. Close to the Acheron River and short
walk to magnificent views of the Acheron Valley, it is ideal for landscape painting classes and studio based workshops. Louise will conduct landscape workshops and watercolour techniques during April and May. Classes can also be arranged for small groups. Terry McKenna will conduct Mokuhanga workshops on 23 to 25 April and 28 to 29 May. For details phone 0417 323 868, or email louise.foletta@gmail.
