Daniel and James of Holistic Pastoral with some of their livestock, which are frequently moved onto new sections of pasture using a rotational grazing system designed to regenerate the land: “It’s like a wave of green creeps back into the paddock as you go,” Daniel says.

By Emily Friedel

L

osing every lamb they bred to dogs or foxes two years running prompted Daniel Kelton, his partner Aldona Baranowski and his brother James

to look for an alternative to conventional farming methods. Daniel and his family moved to the Murrindindi Shire area from New South Wales a few years ago when he got a job

as an outdoor education teacher at Rubicon. Daniel and his siblings grew up working on farms, so are well-versed in sheep husbandry, and they decided to raise sheep in Thornton for

a personal supply of ethically produced meat. “We had a family rule, we wouldn’t eat meat unless we grew it and killed it ourselves, and we still stick to that,” he says.

Grass growth on some of Holistic Pastoral’s resting pasture at the height of summer without the use of artificial fertilisers or watering.

Chickens are an important part of the regenerative agricultural system Holistic Pastoral implements, cleaning up after the larger livestock and leaving behind nutritious manure as fertiliser. But the dogs and foxes down here presented a new and seemingly insurmountable challenge. After exhausting every method possible to reduce predator attacks and being advised by a longtime local farmer that they would be forever battling the dogs, they stumbled upon a solution. “There is a bloke called Joel Salatin from America – he’s a free-range, pastured farmer there – who was championing this electric mesh and since we’ve moved the sheep into this electric mesh, we’ve had the best lambing year yet – we haven’t lost a single lamb,” Daniel says. Not only does the electric mesh keep livestock safe, 12 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2019

but it lends itself to a system of rotational grazing that mimics the natural patterns of herbivores moving across grasslands. Sheep or cattle are shifted to fresh grass on a daily basis, followed by chickens that scratch and spread dung, eat parasites and provide rich manure fertiliser for the soil, and each patch of pasture is rested for long periods between grazing. “Everything links and works together, the system is meant to replicate a natural food system. For example, we keep bees too, and they pollinate the clover and the grasses that don’t wind pollinate, and we get honey from them, so all these pieces fit together,” Daniel says.

After implementing this system of regenerative agriculture, Daniel, Aldona and James witnessed a raft of benefits on top of the elimination of losses to predators. “The most amazing thing is the pasture growth. If you look at the paddocks and the hills around us everything’s dry or browning off, but here where we’ve been using this system we’ve got lush green pastures – and this hasn’t been watered, this is all just rain,” Daniel says. The frequent movement of livestock to new pasture also means that they can farm animals without the use of chemicals. “We don’t have to worry about drenches, and we’ve

never had any foot troubles in our sheep since we moved here, so we can run an organic system because all the worm cycles are getting broken down,” Daniel says. Seeing the potential for meat production using regenerative farming practices, they decided to go commercial to provide ethically raised lamb, chicken and beef for the local community. And so Holistic Pastoral was born. Many families and businesses in the area have jumped on the opportunity to get their hands on some chemical-free, ethicallyraised, local meat, including restaurants such as The Grant St Grocer and Alexandra Hotel.

Daniel says they’ve had some great feedback about the taste too and puts it down to the more natural method of raising meat. “We’ve been getting heaps of cool feedback from people saying ours is the best chicken they’ve ever eaten. The meat is a bit darker, and they have a yellower fat on them. Because they’re moving their legs and their bodies all the time, you get different flavours

developing in the muscles of the chicken. They’re vastly different birds out here [compared to conventional commercial operations]; they run and flap and peck, they’re like chickens should be.” The business end of Holistic Pastoral is currently run on community supported agriculture type model. A call for orders is put out on their website a month before meat is processed and

Sheep enjoying the fresh grass they will graze on for a day before being moved to the next patch.

delivered, with chicken meat available on a monthly basis, while lamb and beef are available bi-monthly. Holistic Pastoral operates out of leased land, and Daniel says they are always on the lookout for suitable land to expand the business and hopes to leave a path of healthy, reinvigorated pasture wherever they go. He also hopes others will adopt the farming practices

they stumbled upon to solve their dog problem. “It’s a great way of farming, and I’d love to see other people transitioning to it because the more we have people doing it in areas like this, the better it is for the land.” For more information on Holistic Pastoral go to www. holisticpastoral.com.au or www.facebook.com/Holistic. Above: Russell, an orphaned wombat, who is doing very well in Tanya’s care. Wombats are common residents at her shelter for a variety of reasons, from road accidents to dog attacks. L

ucy the kangaroo joey was a ‘fence-hanger’, and she still bears the scars from having her feet tangled up in wire. When she came to Tanya Terhaar’s wildlife shelter, Lucy had no feeling in her legs and couldn’t stand. But with time and a helping hand from Tanya, Lucy has beaten the odds and is now happily hopping around. Tanya is at the hub of the Murrindindi Wildlife Support Group, which she started as a way of coordinating activities between local wildlife shelters, carers and helpers around Thornton, Eildon, Alexandra, Marysville, Buxton and Narbethong. “When I moved up here about five years ago, I found

16 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2019

an injured bird and didn’t know who to contact – vets were closed, who do I ring? And I thought there has to be something out there. I used to help wildlife when I was a child, so I said to hubby I’m going to get into wildlife again, then I got onto a shelter that took me on and eventually I started my own shelter. Now there are a few of us who have shelters around here, and there are others who go and collect animals,” she says. Running the shelter and coordinating the wildlife support network is more than a full-time job for Tanya: it’s all consuming. Caring for sick, injured or orphaned animals is a round-the-clock affair, and her phone is constantly alive with calls or messages from people

looking for assistance for animals in one form or another. Between getting up in the middle of the night to feed and change the infants, dropping everything for emergency wildlife rescues and fielding calls, there’s a lot of the less glamorous side of being a carer. “The caring isn’t all touchyfeely feeding with bottles, the hardest parts are all the washing and cleaning the pens, dealing with sick animals, losing them – it can be devastating – and releasing them can be a bit upsetting or having to pass them onto another person. And the stuff you see on the road, it’s horrific some of it. It can be incredibly emotionally taxing.” For Tanya, though, the

effort is more than worth it especially when she sees the success stories like Lucy. And a sure sign that the group she created is having an effect is the proliferation of spray-painted crosses on native animals killed on roads in the area. Those crosses indicate that the animal’s pouch has been checked for young, and Tanya says that’s not something you saw much of when she first started the group. Even with word spreading and more hands on deck to help local wildlife in need, there is always plenty of room for anyone who wants to chip in – the stream of animals requiring care is unrelenting. “There’s a lot of driving

involved. That’s why it would be good to get other people on board to pick up animals. Even sewers – people who want to sew pouches – because we get material donated, but I couldn’t sew if my life depended on it,” she says with a laugh. There are also many small things members of the public can do to assist, things as simple as being more aware of wildlife on the roads and tweaking driving habits to reduce the road toll. “We say to people just wipe off a couple of k’s, especially at night. That little bit slower at night and you often do avoid them.” Anyone who comes across wildlife in trouble can also help a great deal by getting them to a vet or carer, or even just checking pouches of deceased animals for babies. “If you see an animal dead on the road, if you’ve got that minute to stop and check to see if it’s a male or female – it’s usually pretty obvious if it’s a male – that’s a good start. If it’s got a bigger baby, you’ll actually see it moving, if they’re smaller you may not. If you’re unsure, call someone – we’re available 24/7. “If you do find a joey, often they’re in the pouch, and you can’t physically get them out, so you’ve got to cut them

Top: A kangaroo joey snuggling up in its human-made pouch at Tanya’s shelter. Above: Tanya with a welcome swallow that was very reluctant to leave her care. out but be careful not to get bub, but if you can’t just call someone. I’ve often had people turn up with a whole deceased wombat in their car saying it’s got a baby. “If you pick up a joey, try to keep it in a quiet space, don’t pass them around the family to play with, put them straight into a cloth bag or a pillowcase, and if you can’t get anyone overnight just keep it somewhere quiet and warm until someone can come and collect it.” Getting sick, injured or orphaned native wildlife to Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning

registered carers like Tanya or a vet is paramount, not only for legal reasons, but because their care requirements are very specific and, despite good intentions, people who choose to look after wildlife they find can do more harm than good. “We don’t recommend people feed and care for native animals themselves. They need special formulas – cow’s milk can make them really sick – so we recommend people put them in a pouch, or a box if it’s a bird, keep them warm, and contact a vet or us.” Getting wildlife into the right

hands quickly can make all the difference and give animals like Lucy a second chance at life. In fact, life is now looking pretty good for Lucy who, when fully recovered, will join the other roos that Tanya has released on her 80-acre property in Thornton that often visit the shelter in the evening to say G’day and perhaps, in their own way, say thank you. For help for wildlife or more information on getting involved with the Murrindindi Wildlife Support Group call Tanya on 0438 644 021 or go to their Facebook Page. The track was destroyed by fire on 7 February 2009. The damage to trees was so extensive it was thought the popular walking track would never be safe to reopen. It has now been restored for visitors to enjoy.

The track will be temporarily known as the Jehosaphat Gully Walking Track and formally renamed at a future date.

Above and right: the purple swamp-hen.

By Carol Hopkins If you pass any dam, lagoon or lake in the Murrindindi Shire, you are likely to see mediumsized, black birds bobbing about on the surface or foraging in the reeds and grasses along the shoreline. At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking these birds are ducks. However, on closer inspection, you’ll find they lack the broad, flat bills and fully webbed feet of ducks. So, what are they? Most likely, these birds will be one of the common varieties of waterhens that inhabit our area - either the Eurasian coot, dusky moorhen or the purple swamphen. Although they appear similar, they have some distinctive features that will easily enable you to tell them apart. Let’s start with the Eurasian coot. One of the distinguishing features of this dumpy, sooty-grey bird is its white beak and forehead shield, along with its grey legs. It is also the only one of the three waterhens to have partially webbed feet.

Above and left: the Eurasian coot. The webbing is, in fact, a series of lobed flaps fringing each of its long toes. These flaps help the bird paddle, dive and walk about on floating vegetation. Unlike the dusky moorhen or the purple swamphen, the Eurasian coot dives for its food, sometimes to several metres. Its diet consists almost entirely of vegetable matter, which it brings up to the surface for sorting and eating. Coots can also be found grazing along the margins of wetlands or hanging around picnic tables in waterside parklands waiting for handouts of bread; it is in this respect the coot is no different from the other waterhens. At certain times of the year, particularly on large expanses of open water such as Lake Eildon, coots gather in huge flocks, often numbering in the hundreds. Coots eat and sleep on the water by day and night and are not considered to be accomplished flyers. When taking off, these birds can appear ungainly, with feet frantically pattering across the surface of the water, head thrust forward and wings outstretched until they become airborne. Despite this, they have been known to fly long distances at night. The dusky moorhen looks almost the same as the Eurasian coot except that it has a red forehead shield and a red beak with a yellow tip as well as reddish legs. Although its body is the same sooty-grey as the coot, the moorhen sports a splash of white under the tail. Its long toes do not have any webbing.

Dusky moorhen. Dusky moorhens have a more varied diet than the coots, eating insects, worms and molluscs as well as grass and water weed. They obtain their food by up-ending themselves in the water, rather like a duck, with the tail always visible. They also graze along the margins of waterways and build roosting platforms in the reeds and shrubs where they rest and sleep. The purple swamphen is the largest of the three waterhens, roughly 10cm longer than the Eurasian coot or dusky moorhen. While its back is a dusky black, its head, neck and chest are a deep, almost iridescent blue, and it has a large, bright-red beak and forehead shield. Its legs are also red and end in very long toes that are devoid of any webbing. As it walks, it constantly flicks its tail, revealing a patch of snow-white feathers underneath. Although the purple swamphen is a strong swimmer and flyer, it prefers to feed and socialise on land or along water edges where it uses its long toes to drag and grasp plant material. While its diet is primarily vegetarian, it will occasionally eat frogs,

Yea wetlands is a great place to visit to observe water birds. yabbies, ducklings and eggs from any nest within reach. It has also been known to feed on carrion such as dead fish and birds. All of the waterhens can be quite aggressive during the breeding season, actively defending their territories by chasing other birds away and even killing ducklings and young grebes. By now you should be feeling fairly

confident about identifying each of these three waterhens. However, it is important to note that all the preceding descriptions refer to adult birds of breeding age. The juveniles of each of these species tend to be dull brown in appearance and lack the strongly coloured bills, forehead shields and legs of their parents. Similarly, all the hatchlings are tiny balls of black feathers with those of the Eurasian coot and

dusky moorhen also having red heads. To identify the juveniles, it’s best to look around for their parents. If you would like to know more about Australian birds, take a look at BirdLife Australia’s website at www.birdlife.org. au. They also have birdwatching groups throughout Victoria that run regular outings and camps where you can learn from experienced birdwatchers.

foresight of the assiduous publican Alister ‘Mate’ Borrie, who is nearing the silver anniversary of his foray into the world of country pubs. Coming from three generations of farmers and the son of 2011’s Murrindindi Shire Citizen of the Year, Val Borrie, Alister has tenacity in the blood. And this tenacity played a big part in the

hotel winning the coveted industry award ‘Best PubStyle Accommodation’ in Victoria in 2016. Following this achievement, the Hotel was then crowned 2017’s ‘Best Pub-Style Accommodation’ in Australia. Like all rural towns, the local sporting teams play a central role in the social and physical wellbeing of its community

members. For the past 25 years, the Royal Mail Hotel has proudly sponsored the Yea Tigers football, netball and cricket teams, the camera club, swimming programs, picnic race meets, tennis, and many other clubs and fundraisers. On February 7, 2009, the hotel became a safe haven for many locals and travellers during the tragic Black Saturday fires. All the hotel’s blankets and pillows were handed out, and the exhausted groups rested while waiting to hear the fate of their homes, property and loved ones. Amongst the travellers was rugby league footballer Ryan Hoffman who, at the time, was a team member of Melbourne Storm. Shortly after, the complete team of players, management and support crew gathered at the hotel and presented Alister with a painting by Nicole Rose (partner of Billy Slater) as a token of appreciation of his generosity. Ms Rose worked a section of a blanket used by the Hoffmans into the painting, which is symbolic of the support the Royal Mail Hotel extends to the local community and tourists. The restaurant has been designed to cater for a variety of occasions, whether it be an intimate night out with that special someone, a family meal, or a gathering of friends. Produce for the menu is sourced locally, and the extensive wine list is created for wine lovers, by wine lovers, and comprises local, regional and award-winning interstate wines. Craft beer and ciders from the Yarra Valley, Mansfield and Mornington are also available. Cold beer is a must in a country pub bar, and you have all the favourites to choose from at the Royal Mail Hotel Yea, including craft beer and ciders from the Yarra Valley, Mansfield and Mornington areas. The sports bar has various memorabilia of local sportspeople and Australian sporting teams. TABcorp and Trackside facilities are available, and an ATM is offered for customer convenience. A perfect meeting point for get-togethers, the Royal Mail has hosted an array of special events such as school reunions, birthdays, life celebrations/wakes and wedding receptions. Yea and the surrounding towns hold a myriad of events to entertain over a weekend getaway and the spacious luxury suites are the ideal base to recharge. There is also a stunning central area for relaxation or meeting with other guests and a view over the main street of town. J

amieson’s Autumn Festival will be a little earlier this year because Easter has moved into our usual weekend slot. Perhaps a little early for the beautiful colours of autumn, but with the volatility of this year’s weather, who knows? Most importantly, the free festival will be from 10am until 4pm on Saturday 13 April. Activities will be scattered along a closed section of Perkins Street between Deb’s Café (where you can get a coffee) down to the bank of the Jamieson River (where you can get a glass of wine, beer, or cider). In between, apart from food, there’ll be lots of stuff to see, to hear and to experience. You will encounter marquees of musicians playing everything from rock to classical, games for kids and adults alike, demonstrations of old and

modern crafts, and displays of some interesting vehicles from over the decades. Throughout the day, there will be demonstrations of blacksmithing, gold panning, whip cracking and bush cooking, as well as art workshops (including fine art, glass art, mosaic and sculpture), poetry and both modern and traditional dance. Of course, those annual competitive events that are a little unique to Jamieson will still be held – especially the Gold Nugget Throw, the Cow Poo Lotto and the hilarious Hay Bale Race. Not only will you get to see some of the quirky display machines do a parade along Perkins Street, but you might be lucky enough to see the festival from the sky. There will be a raffle for a helicopter Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2019 – 37

The winner will not only get an ‘overview’ of the festival but will have a genuine bird’s eye view of Jamieson and its surrounds in all of its autumn glory. If you, the visitors, have as much fun as the volunteer organisers and volunteer performers, then you’ll have a great day. T

hree years on and the event continues to grow. CycleDindi 19 will return for a fourth time on Saturday 6 April and will showcase the wonderfully scenic Great Victorian Rail Trail, through the Shires of Murrindindi and Mansfield. Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Yea, Alexandra and Mansfield, CycleDindi 19 is a fully supported, family friendly bicycle ride which starts at either Bonnie Doon, Yea or Yarck, depending on the distance the rider wishes to do, and which starting location is easier to access. There are three choices of long rides, of either 121kms or 80kms depending on where you start (Bonnie Doon or Yea) and where you ride to. The short rides are either 54kms or 42kms and are either from Yea to Cathkin, Yea to Yarck or Yarck to Yea. Lunch (provided) is by the Goulburn River on private property at Cathkin and riders are sure to enjoy this scenic location. See ad page 40 for costs. Gentle gradients along much of the route make it suitable for most ages and fitness levels and the trail is a beautiful journey, traversing rolling hills with stunning views. There is fun to be had in the shearing

shed, and a chance to view sheep dogs at work at Nutfield, a working farm right on the rail trail route and includes a delicious home-made Devonshire tea (all included in the entry price). This has been a feature of Cycle Dindi rides to date and has proven to be exceptionally popular, especially with riders from urban areas. New this year is damper and billy tea on a property at Kanumbra near Yarck and is also included in the entry price.

elery has a reputation as a fussy vegetable to grow – off-putting for the backyard gardener – but crunchy, flavourful homegrown celery is well worth the effort. And with some knowledge of the conditions that are conducive to happy celery, producing a crop in your veggie patch need not be daunting. Celery doesn’t tolerate high temperatures, so in the Murrindindi Shire area, it’s a good one to grow over the cooler months. Sowing in early autumn when the temperature begins to cool gives the seedlings a chance to establish before the frosts set in – while mature celery plants benefit from freezing, young plants aren’t so keen on it. You can either plant rows of celery seeds direct and thin seedlings to about 30cm between plants, or bring on seedlings in pots and plant that distance apart. Depending on the weather and strain of celery, they can take a while to germinate (up to three weeks), so don’t be discouraged if it seems to take ages before you see some sprouting action. You can speed up germination by soaking the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

• 2 garlic cloves • 1/2 cup almonds • 3 cups celery leaves or thinned seedlings loosely packed • 3/4 cup olive oil • 40 grams parmesan cheese • 1/4 teaspoon salt or more to taste • 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice or more to taste

1. Combine all ingredients except oil in a food processor until they resemble crumbs. 2. Add olive oil and mix until evenly combined. 3. Use the celery leaf pesto on pasta, as a dip, or as a spread on sandwiches.

The golden rule for growing fat, juicy celery is consistently moist soil. Wild celery is a marshland plant, and its cultivated cousins have inherited an insatiable thirst, growing best in humus-rich, heavily-mulched soil that retains lots of moisture. Celery’s water requirements are another good reason to grow over the cooler months in our area when it’s easier to keep things wet and rain is more abundant. Celery has a long growing season, usually around four months, and on top of the constant watering over that time, fortnightly applications of liquid seaweed and fish emulsion will help keep plants happy (and tasty). As the celery plants get bigger, you can tie the stalks together to keep them under control. When they’re a few weeks off being harvest-ready, you can blanch celery plants by wrapping newspaper around them to exclude light. Blanching reduces bitterness if you like to eat your celery raw. You can harvest the whole plant at once, or take a stalk at a time when you need it to extend the harvest season. Celery leaves are also edible – they’re great in soups and stocks and can add a zesty celery flavour to salads and stir-fries. The pesto recipe opposite is another terrific way to make the most out of your celery crop by using leaves or thinned seedlings.

aster is always a very exciting time of year at the Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum. Engines of all sizes fire up to show off their bells and whistles for the Easter Gala Weekend. The unique, historic machinery collection includes many types of pumps and engines that were used on the land, as well as rural and workshop machinery and industrial railway rolling stock. Train rides behind the 1909 Fowler steam locomotive,

which has been in Alexandra since 1985 and was a working locomotive on the Queensland sugar mills are a highlight of the weekend. Displays of the district’s history include the Rubicon timber industry from 1890’s to 1950’s. The old railway station building is 108 years old and houses three museum rooms. The main room was used as a parcel and ticket office with a station master and staff. The Alexandra Railway Station was also a very busy area with timber being unloaded from Rubicon and broad

gauge trains loaded with timber, supplies and parcels for the trip to Melbourne.

models were built by Ernie Le Brun who spent all his life in the Rubicon forest area.

The Rubicon Room continuously screens video stories from Rubicon timber workers and their families and a photo display showing a Krauss locomotive from the very early years. A replica settlement kitchen depicts kitchen utensils, all the mod cons of the day, and life after the 1850’s.

Come and enjoy a great family day at the Easter Gala Fest at the Alexandra Museum on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April.

There are also scale models of the Rubicon No 1 Mill, the set out of the school and single men’s huts. The

Page 51: the road to High Camp, which provides some magnificent views especially on the way back to Perfect Cure Creek. Above and left: clear autumn days make for very pleasant walks around Lake Eildon. By Emily Friedel

T

he cool, clear days of autumn provide ample opportunity for exploring around Lake Eildon, and the Perfect Cure Creek walks are ideal for acquainting yourself with the area’s wildlife and striking views. Perfect Cure Creek Nature Trail Distance: Approximately 1.5km, 45 minutes return Start: Perfect Cure Creek carpark (walk straight ahead until you reach the sign that lets you know where the Nature Trail separates from the Keg Spur Track). Difficulty: Easy The Nature Trail takes you in a gently undulating loop through patches of dense, moss-carpeted tea tree thicket that open out into areas of towering eucalypt forest. 52 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2019

Along the way, you will hear the constant chatter of little birds that dart around in the underbrush, often just out of sight. You may also see wombats happily foraging in the scrub, even in the middle of the day, and roos sunning themselves in the more open areas at the trail’s start and finish. The wildlife is quite amenable to being photographed, so it’s worth taking a camera. There are small information signposts dotted along the track to give walkers deeper insight into the surroundings and the area’s history – great for making the most out of the experience, especially with curious kids in tow. It’s rare to bump into other walkers around this area, so if you enjoy exploring nature in solitude, you’ll appreciate the Nature Trail.

Wildlife out and about on the Nature Trail. Perfect Cure Creek to High Camp Distance: Approximately 1.5km, 60 minutes return Start: Perfect Cure Creek carpark (just walk straight ahead and follow the Keg Spur Track). Difficulty: Moderate This walk starts with a short warm-up along the flats before an abrupt ascent up the Keg Spur Track. Most of the walk is a steep climb along a dirt road that is well-maintained, but due to its sharp angle, there are spots where any rubble or damp clay make it quite slippery. Shoes with good grip are a must, as is a modicum of fitness – legs and lungs both get a decent workout going up the hill. Reaching High Camp brings some welcome rest and the clearing here is an ideal spot for a picnic. Peeking through the trees at several points on the edges of the clearing gives you some splendid views of the blue-green ranges skirting Lake Eildon. From High Camp, you have the option of carrying on to Cook Point, School Point, or Blowhard Summit.

Walking back down the hill from High Camp to Perfect Cure Creek carpark provides more stunning vistas and a glimpse of the lake (which are easy to miss while you’re concentrating on keeping your footing on the way up). The return walk to High Camp and

the Nature Trail can both be done comfortably in half a day, and strolling along the Nature Trail after the steep climb to High Camp is a lovely way to cool down and relax. For more information on the Perfect Cure Creek walks go to the Parks Victoria website: parkweb.vic.gov.au Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2019 – 53

andfill statistics inspired Kerri Hollingsworth to quit her job, move to the country and birth an eco-friendly upholstery art business in a year.

Consumerism has been eating away at the Earth’s crust. Harmful waste and toxins are injected into our land every day. The oceans are polluted. Temperatures are rising, water is evaporating, and nature is suffering. While from a helicopter view our planet seems doomed, there is light on the horizon. People are waking up. They’re becoming attuned to their personal impact on our planet. Our society has begun to sense the urgency to make a change in the way we live, produce and consume day-to-day products. Kerri Hollingsworth, founder and director of an.ti. quate, is one of these people. an.ti.quate is an environmentally conscious Australian upholstery art brand that’s on the rise. In fact, Kerri’s grand vision is to become a zero-waste business. Planet Earth, the plastic factory If you take a moment to expand your awareness, to cast your eye through your pantry, your bathroom and into the bedrooms in your household, you’ll find an abundance of plastic products you use on a daily basis. When you take yourself shopping – for the most

Delivery day for wingback armchair ‘Valerie’.

Above: Kerri weaving 100% natural fibres for ‘Autumn’. Left: Mongolian sheepskin, mid century recliner ‘Presley’. Questions around how could she change; how could she make a positive impact, danced through her mind until one day, inspiration spoke loud and clear. The 12-month challenge The sleepless nights and constant pre-occupation with unnecessary waste catapulted Kerri into ‘inspired action’. That’s when she decided to embark on a 12-month challenge where she would refrain from buying anything new for an entire year. The challenge began with a stocktake of what plastic and other non-recyclable materials could be eliminated or at least cut down in her home. Things like cling wrap were finished off – as not to waste what was already bought – and she learned how to make her own personal care and general cleaning products. Glass was the container of choice and if it wasn’t recyclable, it didn’t go home with her. part – you’ll find produce neatly stacked and hugged in plastic. From condiments to ice-cream to your toothbrush and the packaging it comes in…plastic and its counterparts are available in abundance. For Kerri, the eco-mindset shift happened about three years ago, while she was working as a flight attendant running her upholstery business on the side as a passion project. One day, she began learning more about landfill statistics. Sheer concern engulfed her the more she learned about single-use plastic, mass production and every-day chemicals. This new knowledge started keeping her up at night. 56 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2019

A change of scenery During this time, Kerri’s jet-setting career spurred on further dissatisfaction. Questions like, “What am I doing with my life? Am I bringing out my best and contributing to the greater good of the world?” played on repeat until she decided to resign. After Kerri fell pregnant, with her partner, she relocated to their farm in the Cathedral Ranges. The lush natural surroundings only spurred on her conscious mindset. For the first time, Kerri honestly felt as though she was making an impact on the world. Nature fuelled her creativity. Her disposition lightened, and she experienced deep peace.

Kerri Hollingsworth with peacock themed, fluted back chair ‘Penelope’. The birth of a zero waste business Kerri’s 12-month challenge ignited other feelings. Her upholstery business was no longer aligned with her ecoconscious way of living. There was no doubt that upholstery was her passion, but not in its current state. Just as she evolved, Kerri knew her company must too. That’s when she consciously chose to make an.ti.quate into a zero waste business. The decision to become zero waste is one thing, to execute is another, and this became evident to Kerri as she saw how many products in her business used non-biodegradable materials or environmentally damaging packaging. Today, Kerri’s getting closer to her vision. She reuses scraps of fabric, trimmings, offcuts and yarn. She collects used staples. Any unusable fabric is recycled and natural fibres composted. She avoids foam where possible and opts for natural fibre fabrics. Coconut fibre and cotton batting are combined with traditional upholstery techniques. All plastic packaging is avoided where possible. It’s a journey, but one she’s made significant progress on. Take a seat When an individual is on purpose, you know it. It oozes out from all that they do. Kerri’s commissioned armchairs and sofas are a testament to that. Her work captivates the heart and inspires the soul. I guarantee you haven’t seen anything like it. Rich tapestries of colour, an assortment of textures and family heirlooms—and their heartfelt stories—are quite literally woven into her armchairs.

distance. Now, Mother Nature is her muse. The raw country environment is infused into her work. It’s what makes her work more than a piece of furniture—it’s truly living, breathing art that becomes your favourite sitting place. Kerri’s coming to play With the growth of an.ti.quate, Kerri is always looking for ways to give back and help educate the community around sustainable living and upholstery art. She’ll be at the MiRa (Marysville Information and Regional Artspace) Exhibition Space doing just this. Her live exhibition, Recover, Reuse, Recycle is where you’ll have the opportunity to see Kerri in action intermittently throughout six weeks. Come along and ask her as many questions as you like, because she’d be delighted to share her ideas, thoughts, techniques and hear yours. Artist in Residence exhibition at MiRa From 15 April to 31 May 31st ‘Recover, Reuse, Recycle’ Exhibition at MiRa (Marysville Information and Regional Artspace) Exhibition Space, Marysville. Open daily from 10am to 4pm. And, if you’re really inspired by Kerri’s story, join her upcoming Mother’s Day workshop, May 2019. You’ll learn how to make an Upholstery Art ottoman that you get to take home! Visit antiquate.com.au to register your interest today! Places are limited!

rom an early age, before I went to school, I liked to spend my time drawing, and I believe this may have made me observant from childhood, always interested in the particulars and details of things. When I left secondary school in 1964, I went straight to art school, and have been

involved more or less fulltime in the professional art world ever since. In my time, it has not been realistic to expect to make a living from painting and drawing, and I have earned my keep from part-time art teaching for 40 years or more. This has given me some freedom to pursue the things that interest me most in painting, without the pressure to ‘produce’.

Almost 10 years ago, I moved to Buxton to be with Jilly, now my wife, (also an artist, designer, gardener, dressmaker and keen golfer). About then I quit teaching at Monash University where I had been for many years, and immersed myself in a new life in the country. The work I will be presenting at Little Fishes Gallery in April is the result of a

concentrated effort to discover ways to the heart of this part of country in particular, and rural Victoria in general. I have found it best to avoid the grander aspects; high views and panoramas, and find the more intimate spaces, taking account of time of day and time of year, when their characteristics show best. Recent work appears to lean heavily on drawing – I have discarded the oil paints with their ability to make sumptuous velvety generalisations, because my interest focuses more and more on how to represent the dry crackly textures and characteristically spiky details of Australian nature. Most of the works are small to medium in size. They include pen and wash drawings, watercolours, and limited edition prints. I hope that the relatively small size of the works will encourage people to go up close and spend time absorbing the details.
