ate seems determined to make flower farmers of the Benefield family – going so far as to coax them out to their dream property in the aptly named Flowerdale. Even though they weren’t actively looking for a property, Natasha and Hayden Benefield felt compelled to make the drive from the city to check out the 126-acre chunk of land for sale in Flowerdale’s Spring Valley. “It was serendipity that we came out that day, and it was

like this place was calling us; we needed to be here,” Natasha says. “We just connected with it straight away and to have all the access to land and be able to put in an orchard and bigger gardens was really attractive to us,” Hayden says. So, with a feeling that the stars had aligned for them, they made their tree change a month before the birth of their first child a bit over four years ago. At first, their gardening efforts focused on providing organic, nutrient-dense food for their family, carrying on

what they had been doing in rental properties for a decade or so in Melbourne and putting Hayden’s self-taught regenerative agriculture skills to good use. But wanting to create a business where they could be at home together as a family more, they set about starting a cut flower farm on the property and Bloom Into You was born. In 2018, they ran trials and then embarked on their first full-scale commercial growing season last year, planting out 1,600 square metres of land with an alphabet of flower varieties

from amaranth to zinnia. Seeing the transformation from fields of seedlings to a farm in full bloom is well worth all the hard work. “It’s very satisfying,” Hayden says. For Natasha, whose previous career was in pharmaceutical sales, the change to farming has been a big but rewarding one. “I go into the greenhouse, put my music on, my hands are in the soil, I completely zone out. I really enjoy methodically putting each of our little seeds in their trays, covering them gently, giving

Natasha and Hayden grow a wide range of flowers including dahlia, zinnia, ranunculus, amaranth, rudbeckia, echinacea, lunaria, scabiosa, strawflower, sunflower, celosia, aster and darcus lace flower. them just the right amount of water, really nurturing them to life,” she says. “It’s almost as though I leave my two babies at home, and then I’ve got another six thousand babies to care for in the greenhouse. Seeing them go from the tiny little seed that you can hardly see in their little trays, to a full and gorgeous, delicious bloom at the end of all this growth is a true gift. Having our girls see, experience and really understand the process, is wonderful.” Once harvested, the flowers go directly to florists and

The slow flower movement in Australia has been described as a ‘late bloomer’ by global standards, but it is gaining momentum, and the Benefields are heartened to see it catching on. “It’s nice to know that there are new florists and designers popping up in the industry whose business model is solely focused on organic-based, low-impact, bee-friendly, eco-friendly flowers that aren’t sprayed with anything that’s harmful to the environment. Adding to their seemingly impeccable timing in starting a ‘slow’ flower farm, fate recently smiled upon them again with the opportunity to take over stewardship of a nearby eucalyptus plantation.

“The Mountain Monthly magazine did a little article on us, and it just so happened that right down the road there was a couple who had been looking for the right people to take over the physical work of harvesting the gum in their plantation. When they saw the article, they got in touch, and they said they instantly knew we were the perfect fit,” Natasha says. With flower production in full swing and gum-

harvesting on the go, Hayden has given up his work in telecommunications rigging, and the flower farm is a fulltime family business. Now the Benefields are contemplating what else they can do to bring the joy of beautiful blooms to people. “We’d really love for the property to become a location for workshops, events, ‘you-pick’ excursions for the public to come and harvest their own

bunches. Also, Boutique B&B accommodation is a big goal for us – to have guests stay and enjoy the true serene beauty of the land in a unique and secluded way,” Natasha says. ea bred Hannah Gallinar (née Garlick) is a self-taught photographer who has built her highly successful, award-winning business on wits, customer service and parenting skills – all while building it around her family. Hannah’s decision to go into professional photography was dictated by her partner’s career in the defence force, which means their family moves every year or two to wherever he is stationed. “I had to find a business that

I could literally pick up and take anywhere, and I fell into photography,” Hannah says. She began playing around with a camera and taking happy snaps of family and friends around eight years ago. Being a quick learner, it didn’t take Hannah long to figure out the technical aspects of photography. Then, in 2013, Hannah got serious and bought her first professional camera, and Photography + Film by Hannah Elizabeth was born just six weeks after her youngest son was born.

Disregarding the famous W.C. Fields quote “Never to work with animals or children”, Hannah began her business chasing toddlers – arguably the most difficult sub-group of children to work with – so she could capture the moments their parents couldn’t. “I adore toddlers because you never know which way it’s going to go; it’s either one way or the other. They make you work the hardest!” Luckily, being a mum of three, Hannah was wellequipped to deal with

even the most unruly little humans. “Toddlers just want to have fun, so if you’ve got bubbles or colourful blankets, or anything you know that they’re going to love, it helps a lot. I think I just picked that up from having my own kids, thinking what can I do to distract them.” Hannah says her ability to get the most out of kids in photo shoots is also because she treats photography sessions as more than just the images produced: they are memory-makers in and of themselves.

Above: Hannah says no matter what type of wedding you have – whether it be all glitter and gold or down-to-earth country chic – she will bring out the theme in her photographs. “When someone does a cake smash, it’s not just photos to me. They’re going to remember the photos, but you don’t want a one-yearold in tears because they don’t like the cake, you’ve got to make that extra effort to make a memory to go with it.” A few years after going pro, Hannah was awarded the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers’ (AIPP) prestigious accreditation – a particularly impressive achievement given the judges’ level of scrutiny and her subjects’ level of uncontrollability. “I had three judges scrutinise my work like there was no tomorrow, and because the toddler, who was in a bath, had his little pinkie finger up, I got a point less for that – so it’s got to be that perfect

After starting with toddlers, branching out to other age groups was a breeze for Hannah.

“I actually don’t know how I do it; it’s just juggling.”

“I’ve even had dads take notes on how I put babies to sleep. In Sydney I had this man sit next to me and write down notes because they hadn’t had sleep in days, and I put the baby to sleep straight away.” In between photographing other people’s children for a living, Hannah is hard at work looking after her own, including her youngest who has special needs. “I go to school four times a day with him because he’s got severe allergies,” she says. Her ability to run a business on top of her significant

With her seemingly superhuman powers to combine work and family, it’s no surprise Hannah was a finalist in the 2019 AusMumpreneur Awards in the Victorian Business Excellence category. “It was incredible to walk away with that as only 12 businesses out of two thousand got chosen, and I was one of those. We had mentors and speakers from all over Australia, all the CEOs of their own companies, all mums in businesses – some even came with their children. It was so inspiring to be even in the room with them let alone in the awards,” she says.

Running with the theme of family photos that has been present since she first started playing around with a camera, Hannah now offers photography and film packages that celebrate all sorts of family moments, including those very precious ones brought by newborns. Last Christmas, she set up a pop-up shop in Yea for festive-season portraits, and over the holiday period went to wineries, olive groves and cattle farms to capture not only the families but the special places they call home. alina Asian Food is bringing a touch of spice to local markets and events with their Chinese cuisine. It’s just a touch, mind you, because owners Wayne Fulton and Lina Bin make sure their lovingly-prepared food appeals to a wide range of palates.

“It’s tailored to suit the market, and it’s all homemade, that’s the important thing that sets it apart, I think. We make the lemon sauce, we make the sweet and sour sauce, and we make the dumpling wraps,” Wayne says.

Serving up traditional Chinese food such as dumplings and pork steamed buns along with ‘Australian’ Chinese staples like lemon chicken and Mongolian beef (neither of which Chinese-born Lina had heard of before emigrating here), the duo has event-

During his time as a biologist, Wayne discovered five species of fish while working in fisheries in Tasmania, and later took up the position of Director of Freshwater Research for Fisheries Victoria at Snobs Creek, which brought him to the Murrindindi Shire area.

For Wayne, these easygoing interactions with people during work are very different from the sort he experienced in a 40-year career as a biologist and fisheries manager. “You’re dealing with people, but you’re dealing on a different basis – you can

From there, they progressed to serving food from a little gazebo at local markets and events. After a few years of doing that and developing their menu, Wayne and Lina decided to upgrade to a food van and add a coffee van to the business. “We bought the coffee van and food van on our last trip to China – with Lina being of Chinese nationality, we go back there a bit. So we went to Shanghai to see some of the manufacturers of the vans, and with Lina’s accounting and Chinese language skills, we were able to come up with something that we wanted.”

With their new vans now all decked out, Wayne and Lina make regular appearances at markets throughout the year, including those held at Kinglake, Yea and Benalla as well as the Taggerty and Heathcote twilight markets over summer. They can also be found at food and music festivals and other events such as the Alexandra Pro Rodeo and Eildon Boat Show. So if your appetite has been whetted for Asian flavours, keep an eye out for the Walina Asian Food van at the next local market or event you go to. Masons Falls Viewing Platform

Distance: Approx 16km Time: Approx 4 – 5 hours Difficulty: Grade 3 (recommended for people with some bushwalking experience).

The Masons Falls viewing platform is an easy 600-metre walk from the picnic area. The spacious wooden observation deck gives you a splendid panorama of the 45-metre high falls and the surrounding mountainside. The falls are quite a distance from the platform, but still stunning and suitably photogenic.

Start: Masons Falls Picnic Area Your journey begins at the neat and well-maintained Masons Falls Picnic Area, which has plenty of parking, toilets, shelters, tables and free gas barbeques (but nowhere for rubbish disposal, so be prepared to take yours home). To get to the Masons Falls Picnic Area, make your way onto WhittleseaKinglake Road (C724) and turn south onto National Park Road. About 4 kilometres down National Park Road, you’ll find the entrance to the National Park. From there, go right onto Mason Falls Road, following the signs to the picnic area. Once you reach the picnic area, head left from the information signs towards the Masons Falls viewing platform.

Running Creek Track After you’ve soaked up the splendour of the falls, head up the stairs behind the viewing platform and onto Running Creek Track, which takes you about 7.5 kilometres to the ridge of Mt Sugarloaf. As its name suggests, Running Creek Track leads down to, then runs alongside, the gently babbling Running Creek. The chatter of small birds provides a soundtrack for your march along Running Creek Track, and you may see flashes of colour as yellow-breasted robins and superb wrens flit about in the scrub. The bank on the side of the track is home to tiny worlds of moss, lichen, fungi and sundews; it’s worth

pausing now and again to have a closer look at these micro-communities. There are several spots along Running Creek Track with easy access to the creek such as Ferny Nook – perfect for a break and a snack while you listen to the soothing song of the water flowing over rocks and bathe in the green tranquillity of tree ferns. Once the track has dipped down next to the creek, there is a long, steady and fairly steep ascent to Mt Sugarloaf. This portion of the hike requires a decent amount of leg and lung power (and does feel a little bit like it goes on forever at times), but it’s encouraging to see the forest become stouter and drier as you ascend, letting you know you’re making progress to the top. After the track levels out a bit, allowing you to catch your breath and work some of the lactic acid out of your legs, it takes you across the road to Mt Sugarloaf Ridge Track. Mt Sugarloaf Ridge Track At the sign, go right, and you have just under a kilometre walk to the Mt Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2020 – 25

Sugarloaf carpark and rest spot (it’s about 2.5 to 3 hours into the walk, so you might want to time it for your lunch break). Where there are decent gaps in the trees, you can find some pleasing views of the farmland and scattered houses in the valley below as you walk up the track to the rest spot. At the rest spot on a clear day, you can just see Melbourne’s skyscrapers huddled together in the distance. When you’re ready to get on the move again, retrace your steps back along Mt Sugarloaf Ridge Track, and then keep following it towards Blackwood Picnic Area.

can also pop over to the Blackwood Picnic Area, which is close by, then backtrack to the Wallaby Trail Link.) Wallaby Trail Once you set foot on the wide, graded track that is Wallaby Trail, it’s all downhill from there (well, almost). The 1.5-kilometre descent is moderately steep, taking you down through increasingly tall and damp forest until you are back on the Running Creek Track, a few hundred metres from the Mason Falls Viewing Platform. (There is the option to return to the Masons Falls by Boundary Track rather than Wallaby Trail if you prefer.)

The track towards Blackwood Picnic Area is narrow and flanked by a sea of bracken. It’s a gently undulating path, which is relaxing and very welcome at this stage of the hike.

Now many hours after you started your hike, the falls are in a different light, so it’s nice to spend a moment at the viewing platform again to see how the time of day affects the view.

When you get to the signed intersection after about 3 kilometres, head along the short Wallaby Trail Link to get onto Wallaby Trail. (At the intersection, you

can do a quick 500-metre stroll around Lyre Bird Circuit, which takes you through lush, ferny undergrowth. You will likely hear the marvellous mimicry of superb lyrebirds on this little detour, and if you’re lucky, you might even see one. Shorter Options If the full 16-kilometre circuit is a bit much, you can opt for a trip to the viewing platform or around Lyrebird Circuit or a combination (they add up to a nice 2-kilometre walk together). Another option is to go along Running Creek to Ferny Nook, The Tryst or Hazel Glade and then backtrack before the really taxing uphill climb begins. You can also go via the falls up Wallaby Trail, then return to the Masons Falls Picnic Area along Boundary Track, which is about a 5.3-kilometre loop.

amieson’s 7th Autumn Festival will have the same fun and smiling faces as in previous years, but it will have a very serious intent. While we bemoan the mass exodus of summer tourists this year, we’re grateful that Jamieson’s community, streets, buildings, rivers and beautiful scenery are still there and untouched. We are blessed compared to so many other little townships that have been devastated, first by drought, then by fire and most recently by flood. So, for 2020, every cent that we take in will be donated to Drought Relief. Our musicians already entertain at no charge, our displays and demonstrations have always been entirely volunteerbased, as is our organisation. As our only costs would have been advertising and promotion, we are very grateful to the Murrindindi Guide for chipping in to promote this year’s Autumn Festival fundraiser. The Festival is on 4 April from 10am to 4pm and is free to all visitors – so come along and enjoy yourself while helping some fellow Victorians whose lives have been shattered.

As usual, activities will be scattered along a closed section of Perkins Street between Deb’s Café (where you can get a great coffee) down to the bank of the Jamieson River (where you can get a glass of wine, beer, or cider). In between, apart from food, there’ll be lots of stuff to see, to hear and to experience. You will encounter marquees of musicians playing everything from rock to classical, games for kids and adults alike, demonstrations of old and modern crafts, displays of some interesting vehicles from over the decades. Throughout the day, there will be demonstrations of blacksmithing, gold panning, bush cooking and maybe even whip-cracking, as well as art workshops (including fine art, glass art, mosaic and sculpture), poetry and both modern and old dance. Of course, those annual competitive events that are a little unique to Jamieson will still be held – not just the Cow Poo Lotto and the hilarious Hay Bale Race, but the iconic and very competitive Gold Nugget Throw.

Not only will you get to see a display of quirky old machines on Perkins Street, but you might be lucky enough to see the festival from the sky. There will be a raffle for a helicopter flight over Jamieson, with the flight taking place during the afternoon of the festival. The winners will not only get an ‘overview’ of the Festival but will have a bird’s eye view of Jamieson and its surrounds in all of its autumn glory. For 2020, a number of early model VW split-screen Kombis will join some of last year’s colourful Citroen 2CVs. By April, we’re sure to have added a few other quirky items that have been hidden in country sheds. While the Festival is only on the Saturday, there will also be a guided walk among Jamieson’s old, rare and unusual trees at 10am on the morning of Sunday 14 April. is one species you’re almost certain to have glimpsed in your backyard.

There are thousands of species of hoverflies, which make up the family Syriphidae, and they inhabit every continent except Antarctica. Many species mimic bees and wasps in an attempt to ward off predators, and the hoverflies most of us are familiar with in the garden have black-and-yellow banded markings to give the impression they possess a nasty sting. However, unlike the insects they impersonate, hoverflies are quite harmless to humans.

Adult hoverflies feed on nectar and pollen, so an easy way to attract them to the garden is to grow plenty of nectar-producing flowers. As they move from flower to flower, they also provide a valuable pollination service. Once they’ve found your sweet floral offerings, you can sit back and wait for them to lay eggs in any pesky aphid colonies, and then let the larvae do their work.

overflies are a common sight in the garden during warmer weather, hovering for a moment in one spot, then moving up or sideways or even backwards before pausing to hover again. Being such an everyday occurrence in the garden makes these buzzing little beings easy to overlook and take for granted, but we gardeners would do well to pay them more attention.

Noticing the characteristic stop-start flight pattern of the hoverfly should cause a little flutter of joy in the heart of any green thumb – they are one of the ‘goodies’ of the garden. In fact, they regularly appear in lists of the best beneficial bugs you can have around. The larvae of many species of hoverfly are merciless aphid hunters, including larvae of the common hoverfly (Melangyna viridiceps), which is found all over eastern mainland Australia and

Aphid-eating hoverfly larvae are usually green or brown, flattened, legless maggots, and they love feasting on soft-bodied, sap-sucking pests like aphids. According to Cornell University, each hoverfly larvae can consume up to 400 aphids during development and, when they’re plentiful, hoverfly larvae can reduce aphid populations by 70-100%.

To make sure hoverflies are in fit condition to do your dirty work in the garden, avoid using insecticides, especially broad-spectrum varieties because they’re as likely to kill your aphid-assassins as any pest you’re trying to control. And next time you see the little yellow and black body of a hoverfly darting around flowers in the backyard, maybe hover there for a moment yourself and think about all the good these unsung garden heroes are doing for your plants and your peace of mind. CycleDindi 20 will return on Saturday 4 April and will showcase the wonderfully scenic Great Victorian Rail Trail, through the Shires of Murrindindi and Mansfield. Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Yea, Alexandra with assistance from Mansfield, CycleDindi 20 is a fully supported, family friendly bicycle ride that starts at either Alexandra, Bonnie Doon or Yea depending on what distance the rider wishes to do and which starting location is easier to access. There are three choices of long rides depending on where you start (Bonnie Doon or Yea) and where you ride to.

These rides are either 121 or 80kms. The short rides are either 61kms, 42kms or 26kms and are either from Yea to Cathkin, Yea to Alexandra or Alexandra to Cathkin.

Gentle gradients along much of the route make it suitable for most ages and fitness levels and the trail is a beautiful journey, traversing rolling hills with stunning views.

he Yarra Valley Plant Fair has had two spring shows and is now being held for the first time in autumn (Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April 10am-5pm at 125 Quale Road, Wandin). Like the spring event it will provide a venue where you can spend a day looking at and learning about the widest range of plants, how to use them, how to grow them and how they fit into our modern gardens. At this time of year we have a different range of plants in flower, looking good and available for sale. We are long term residents and nursery operators in the Yarra Valley and passionate growers of all sorts of plants. Our region is the perfect place to celebrate the exciting plants grown in and around Victoria. With the shift of Tesselaar from a Plant Expo to Kabloom

we feel that there is a definite need for an autumn plant show. As such we have decided to run an annual autumn plant fair at our nursery in Wandin. Most of the plants grown in Victoria come from various nurseries, some of which are wide ranging plant factories and others are specialist growers with a passion for a particular genus, family or type. These growers have a great knowledge of their plant profile and are often breeders as well as collectors and are a great source of information. We have growers and suppliers from as diverse a product range as possible, several of whom do not display at other garden shows. We have talks from the collectors, the experts and renowned growers on various aspects of the plants. he Yarra Valley Herb and Chilli Festival started in 2012 by Clive and Di Larkman as a way to promote their range of herbs, chillis and other edibles. The first event was a great success with 50 vendors and 2500 attendees. Since then it has expanded its range of food and entertainment and the attendees have grown to over 7000 in 2019. Their sons, Martin and Simon, plus Di’s sisters, Sandra and Kelly, and their kids, Matt, Hannah, Sally and Marley, are all part of what has become a food loving family. Marley was barely a year old in 2012 and she feels that she is the Chilli Festival girl. They are all true foodies and have a great love of food, wine and everything related.

They also have passion for meeting and sharing good times with people from all over Victoria. They all see the festival as a fun, family event at which everyone involved has an amazing time and are pleased to be there. The Yarra Valley Herb and Chilli Festival has become a must attend part of the food and wine scene in Melbourne. It is a two day celebration of the use of herbs and chillis in our daily lives through the presentation of food and drinks, sauces, plants and cultural gear associated with those cuisines that focus on spice and flavour. It includes dozens of different chilli plants and a full range of herbs. The food court offers dishes

from over 15 cuisines. Stages with lectures, cooking demonstrations, relaxed music and cultural dances will inform and entertain you. Australian band Psycho Zydeco will play their toe tapping version of Lousianna Zydeco folk music. Also the Australian Chilli Cook-off which is on each day will raise funds from the public tastings for Seville CFA. The competition stage will have the Hellfire Chicken Wing Challenge and the Captain Chilli eating competition. Entry for under 14 is free and there is a free kids area with jumping castles, face painting, pony rides and animal farm. A range of boutique and

craft breweries, local wine, excellent coffee and the world’s hottest spring roll and dim sims plus Australia’s leading hot sauce companies will be on-site. There are hand made chocolates, pestos, jerky, deserts, fresh made fruit ice cream and other yummy snacks. It is also a chance to stock up the pantry with an amazing range of sauces, herbs, spices, rubs, blends, relishes and chutneys. A 2017 meta-analysis of the research into the effects of gardening on health published in Preventative Medicine Reports found that a dose of gardening is indeed good for us. Among other things, gardening increases quality of life, physical activity levels and cognitive function, while reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety and even body mass index.

Another possible causal relationship between gardening and health not mentioned in the meta-analysis is the presence of soil microbes that may directly affect our brains. In several different mice studies, Mycobacterium vaccae, a non-pathogenic bacterium that lives in soil, has been found to improve stress resilience and learning while decreasing anxiety-related behaviour. Only last year, it was found that M. vaccae possesses an antiinflammatory fat, which researchers theorise is at least partly responsible for its stress-reducing properties. While scientists are hoping to make a ‘stress-vaccine’ from M. vaccae, the easiest way to get a good dose of it – along with a raft of other physical and mental health benefits – is to step out your back door and get digging around in the garden.

When I look back on my life, I never guessed that I would be coaching and empowering women as a career, let alone co-authoring a book on the topic.

It’s inclusive for all and doesn’t segregate into leader, business owner or mum. It’s quite unique and has been welcomed with open arms by local women.

When good friend and fellow Mumprenuer Tammie Pike approached me to help put together a book called Empowered Women Empowering the World, I knew I had to say yes. As much as the thought scared me, I knew I had a story to share.

The WiNE network is based around five values of empower, connect, educate, inspire and nurture, which sit nicely alongside my personal and coaching values and teachings.

The book will be launching across four states in May – Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney and is co-authored with inspirational life stories from 17 amazing women from all over Australia. Our stories are all different, but in some way they all have a message that will resonate and empower other mums and women to make impacting changes in their lives, to reach goals and to live their dreams. The book and its writers are diverse, with a story of a woman who grew up in the bushlands of Africa and is now a successful businesswoman, and another story shares how a woman’s firm belief in building children’s self-esteem reduces mental health issues later in life, nurturing this through her ever-growing business. Then there’s my story, where I overcame limiting beliefs to impart my knowledge to women to believe in their potential. I am Briana Seaton, a life and business coach. My passion is empowering women to be the best versions of themselves so they can live a life they truly love. I support amazing women and a great bunch of men to find life balance and work towards their goals and aspirations. I thrive on helping people to overcome life’s obstacles, and while it can be hard for anyone to take those first steps, I find that one of the biggest challenges is helping them see and believe that they can, and this is where my own story starts. In Empowered Women Empowering the World I share my story of searching for where my passion and purpose met, 46 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2020

and my truth was discovered. How my loss of identity as a new mum, path of self-discovery and my appetite for connecting with people lead me to my new career. Those early steps were a challenge, it wasn’t easy and yes, I feared failure but had to find a way to believe that I could. I began a Psychology degree (twice!) but knew it wasn’t my true calling. After starting with my own business coach, I knew this was IT! It was what I had already been doing on a lesser scale and without even realising. Being a life and business coach allows me to assist people who truly want to get help, so they can unleash their real power. I had been through so many personal and business experiences that allowed me to understand why women don’t often reach their full potential and I am still growing, learning and expanding these experiences from my own life. We all need help and support and I have had my fair share from friends and family to help me overcome many of life’s challenges. I wanted to create a space where women from all walks of life felt supported and safe to share their trials too. This was the beginning of an amazing group of incredible women based in Mansfield called the WiNE

Creating this group was one way for me to ‘give back’ to my community and to ensure women around me felt supported. It’s my way of spreading the love, passion and learnings far and wide, showing others that they can also step into their power and live the life they truly deserve. My hope is that by sharing my story through the WiNE network and my book that other women can see that anything is possible too. That through adversity we can grow strong and empower others to do the same. What does it mean to me to be an empowered woman? It means having an open mind and knowing that it is ok to reach out and ask for help when it’s needed. It is about being able to self-lead so that you can team-lead a conversation or situation, whether that be your children, partner or co-workers. Life is constantly evolving but anyone can be empowered as long as they are willing to learn and grow, because when you do, a ripple spreads far and wide from close family out into your community. It’s not something that you can ever truly measure, but it’s impactful beyond belief. Empowered Women Empowering the World is out soon and will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself. ome and enjoy the opening night of the 51st Rotary Club of Alexandra Easter Art Show on Friday 10 April in the Alexandra Leisure Centre at 6.30pm. We welcome locals, visitors, artists, advertisers and sponsors to an evening of food, drinks and fabulous art works. Tickets are $20 and all art is for sale. The success of the Show is ensured by generous sponsors, especially Murrindindi Shire Council, Qualia Wines, DMK Financial Services, Alexandra Community Pharmacy, McCormack Funerals and Canaccord Genuity Patersons Stockbrokers. The talented Joe Talia will play live on opening night, as will the wonderful Gillespie Family on Saturday. Mandy Valsinger is generously donating our raffle prize called ‘Sacred Lotus’. Throughout the weekend there will be opportunities to socialise with artists and ask questions. Prizes totalling $5,000 will be awarded for painting, sculpture, woodwork, photography and emerging artists. Rural art shows are

a great way to collect works for home or the office. Pieces vary from about $100 to $4,000. Artists are both local and interstate including well known people like Vida Pearson, Chris Kandis, Kasey Sealey, Pamela Moore, Louise Foletta, Julian Bruere, Bev Aisbett, Natalie Brodie, Kate Bills, Ernest Hunt, Craig Davey, Ken Wraight, Christine Siciliano, David Fennessy and Alistair Mason. Barry Kerr, guitar maker, will be demonstrating on Saturday 11 at 1pm and Mandy Valsinger will be demonstrating botanical art at 11am on Sunday 12. This year our judge is the esteemed Malcolm Webster and our curator is the very generous Cindy Ferguson.
