he timber ballast of an 18th century ship lying on the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Brazil would seem, at least to the uninitiated, an unlikely choice of material for constructing a guitar. But that is exactly what Barry Kerr, a world-renowned guitar maker from Alexandra, has used in some of his high-end instruments.

Front of the guitar Barry made using Brazilian rosewood and Adirondack spruce, sold to Mark in Portland, Oregon USA.

This timber is the rare and highly prized Brazilian rosewood. The batch Barry purchased was over 200 years old. Up until the late 1960s, Brazilian rosewood was widely used in making quality acoustic and electric guitars, but supplies dried up due to rampant harvesting. Now the only source is reclaimed timber, and even that is subject to strict export controls. Apart from the ballast, Barry sources this precious wood from colonial furniture such as tables and beds, often imported directly from Brazil. Because Barry’s guitars are mostly purchased by discerning collectors, he goes to considerable lengths to source timbers that will appeal to this market. As well as Brazilian rosewood, Barry uses other soughtafter wood, such as Engelmann and Adirondack spruce, along with varieties that will enhance the instrument’s aesthetics. Here, his wife Sue plays a big part, advising on the best combinations of colour, grain and trim to create a visually stunning effect. The strength and flexibility of the wood also play a critical role. As Barry explains, “The strings are the engine of the guitar, and the engine has to drive the top to vibrate. The wood has to be strong enough not to crack but sensitive enough to vibrate.” The sound or tone of the wood is also important. “Very good timbers have a good musical note to them, and that’s what collectors want,” Barry says. “I do a lot of tapping and listening to the wood before I make a purchase.” But selecting the right timber is just the beginning. Barry estimates there are around 200 separate steps involved in making a first-rate, handcrafted guitar. It’s a time-consuming and painstaking process. “Normally, if you are working on your own, and you can make ten guitars a year, you’re doing pretty well,” Barry says. Barry grew up on a dairy farm near Dunrobin in western Victoria and made his first guitar when he was just 15 years old as part of his woodworking class at school. Although Barry dismisses it as being “good

At the time, Barry had been playing the guitar for four years, inspired and encouraged by one of his primary school teachers. Barry comes from a musical family, and his guitar-playing skills were honed with a band that included his father, brother and sister. The band played cabaret-style music at football clubs, school dances, pubs and restaurants throughout the western district of Victoria and into South Australia. “The band work took up every weekend for four years, and we often didn’t finish until late. We were flat out, and my schoolwork suffered, but I loved it,” Barry says. Gradually though, Barry became dissatisfied with the sound of his guitar

and started to think, “It sounds OK, but I really want it to sound better.” As he explains, “With factory-made guitars, unless you paid a lot of money, you were stuck with a pretty mediocre sound. That’s what got me thinking about building my own guitars.” While doing an apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery, he stumbled across a book in the library on how to build an acoustic guitar. For Barry, “this was gold” and, with the help of two other books he imported from the USA, he began to build guitars. First, he started with electric guitars and then moved on to acoustic guitars. For many years, guitar building was combined with his other jobs. These included carpentry and joinery, teaching guitar, repairing stringed instruments

and restoring antique furniture. Then, along with his brother David, he established a business called Woodtone Manufacturing based in Hamilton in western Victoria. Together they built furniture, along with guitars, and later established five-day workshops for budding guitar makers. “The person would come in [to a workshop] on Monday, and they would go out on Friday with a very simple, nofrills, acoustic guitar,” Barry says. While these workshops were extremely successful, with students coming from all over Australia, the pressure of running 35 weeks of intensive instruction over two years was enormous. In the end, Barry and his wife realised that they didn’t want or need the stress, especially with a young Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021 – 11

For another six years, Barry juggled other work with guitar building until eventually taking on the role of luthier (guitar maker) full-time. Barry prides himself on building first-rate guitars, ones that use rare and beautiful woods, produce a fabulous sound and display an impeccable finish. His clients come from all over the world, and many are repeat customers, keen to add another

exquisite and unique guitar to their collection. However, he does not do custom-made work. Although Barry loves his work, it is physically demanding, and ongoing health issues mean that he is now looking to sell his business. For someone with the requisite skills, Barry believes it would be an ideal business to run from a country location such as Alexandra. Barry still plays the guitar, every day in

fact, but modestly says he is “a pretty ordinary player” simply because he doesn’t practice enough. He also says he’d like to broaden his repertoire of tunes. Perhaps when Barry’s guitar making takes a back seat, his guitar playing will once again come to the fore. Saladin Lodge owner, Kim Rycroft, fell in love with the Narbethong property more than 20 years ago and has since dedicated herself to transforming it into a place that offers something for everyone. By Emily Friedel

T

here is a story behind Saladin Lodge that many people may not know about. Current owner, Kim Rycroft, was not aware of its backstory either when she jumped the front gate in 1999 to have a poke around and see if it might become her new holiday home. But over the last 20-odd years, Kim has discovered much about the fascinating history of Saladin Lodge and added her own story into the mix. Today, Saladin Lodge is “a bit of everything”. The main building is an expansive, high-ceilinged structure with superb acoustics and a commercial kitchen – ideal for art exhibitions, concerts, weddings and all manner of other events. Built into

the main building are a conference centre and B&B accommodation. There is also a mezzanine lounge that Kim says is perfect for paper aeroplane contests, among other things. Opposite the main building is a cosy little café and gift shop where visitors can get toasted sandwiches, tea, coffee, local products, sweet treats and other bits and pieces – or just pop in for a toilet stop. There are nature walks to the top of a nearby hill, and there are lawn areas for outdoor functions and sculpture exhibitions. Then there is the lake, adorned with water lilies, where people can swim, boat or take fly-fishing lessons. Clients and carers from Menzies Support Services in Alexandra are among the

They were absolutely stoked,” Kim says of a recent visit from the Menzies crew. Offering a bit of everything,

and ensuring accessibility to accommodate any mobility restrictions, Kim hopes everyone who comes to Saladin finds something that appeals to them. She also hopes to impart her love of the land and sense of stewardship. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021 – 15

“None of us owns this place; we just get the privilege of hanging out. I love sharing that aspect, and I hope people take that on board irrespective of how many hours or minutes they’re here for. I think you’ve got to offer opportunities for them to get to know the land and hear it and smell it and enjoy all the sights. They can go for walks up to the top of the hill, and if they can’t walk, I put them in my car and take them up there.” Kim first became acquainted with Narbethong’s natural 16 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021

beauty three decades ago when she started four-wheel driving – a hobby that eventually saw her running events for Landrover, including vehicle launches. Another hobby, teaching children horse riding, allowed her to explore the region more. Eventually, the trips from Melbourne were so frequent that a holiday home around Narbethong was warranted. On the same day she put a deposit on another property, a friend told Kim she should check out Saladin Lodge,

which was also for sale. It was three days before Christmas, always a hectic time, and Kim wasn’t sure whether she’d bother. But the sign on the gate caught her eye as she was driving home on the Maroondah Highway, and she pulled over. Undeterred by the locked gate once she’d made her mind up to check out the property, she went over the top of it and walked across what was the old airstrip. “There was a little old stone cottage, and when I peered in the front door, I could see thigh-high weeds in the lounge room. There were other outbuildings all over the place. There was this little building, which I found out later was a doctor’s surgery. All this activity had gone on here, and I thought, ‘Good lord, why is it that no one has spoken about here?’ There was obviously enormous history that I knew

absolutely nothing about in all the years I’d been coming up here. I just fell in love with it. I got on the phone and spoke to the real estate guy, who I’d literally just put down a deposit with for another property, and said tell me the story about this property.” As Kim discovered, the Crooke family were the original owners of Saladin Lodge. John Robert Crooke was the first person to drive a motor car over the Black Spur – the ‘car’ being a buggy-like contraption with a steam-powered engine. J.R. Crooke also built Aspendale Racecourse, which was initially used for horseracing and later one of the world’s first purposebuilt motor racing tracks was added to the site. The Crookes named one of their racehorses Saladin, after the famous Muslim hero and first sultan of Syria and Egypt,

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS IN THIS MAGAZINE

and the horse inspired the property name. Saladin won the 1872 Australian Cup, and later died under suspicious circumstances, possibly at the hands of those who wanted to end his winning streak. The derelict stone cottage Kim had peered into when she first wandered around the property was also built by the Crookes. Sadly, the cottage was bulldozed by an unscrupulous builder without Kim’s permission. Stones salvaged from the cottage are now built into the chimney and a feature wall in the main building, as well as Kim’s office and some monuments outside. Kim says she feels it was very

important to honour the stones, and she greets them every morning. After the main building was completed, she had the opportunity to meet J.R. Crooke’s son, Dr Peter Crooke, who was in his 90s by that stage. Like Kim, he felt a special affinity for the cottage stones. “What was really beautiful was that when Peter came, he started touching the stone. I stood beside him, and I said I do that too. He said I’ve always touched the stone.”

“I asked him why some of the pieces of stone looked a bit weird and not like they were from this area, and he said when they were driving along, they would pick up odd pieces of stone and bring them back here.” Through meeting some of the Crooke family, Kim also

put together the missing piece of the map puzzle. The large brightly-coloured map, which was painted on a wall in the old cottage, luckily survived the bulldozing and is now mounted on the wall of the mezzanine lounge of the main building. On the map, a small square marks

Meeting Peter also gave Kim a chance to uncover more details of the property’s story.

The property will resurrect itself, it will heal itself, and it’s up to me to go along with that. That’s how I’ve always felt,” she says.

Saladin Lodge’s position amid the mountain ranges and waterways. For a long time, Kim thought it must have been the work of the Keoghs who owned the property before her. That was until Peter’s daughter, Sally Crooke, dropped by. “She was walking up the stairs, and at the top of the stairs she bellowed out, ‘Oh my god, there’s my map!” The Crooke connection has continued, with sixthgeneration family member Dean Crooke having his wedding at Saladin Lodge a couple of years ago. 18 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021

As Kim has uncovered more of the property’s past, she has also been a part of some of its most memorable moments. Before the main building was even completed, the Black Saturday fires came through, destroying all the remaining historical buildings and most of the hundred-year-old garden. It was an enormous setback, but Kim adopted the warrior spirit of the property’s namesake and soldiered on. “Black Saturday didn’t take away my love and desire to keep trying on the property, nothing could take that

Of course, history has also been made, and is continuing to be made, by the coronavirus pandemic. While the prolonged lockdowns were a blow to the business, they also gave Kim a new perspective on Saladin Lodge, what it means to her and her place in its story. “During the lockdown, I felt like I turned into Shirley Valentine, saying hello to the wall. I made a joke with my friends that I hadn’t actually said hello in ages, and I went out to practise on a kookaburra because I missed it so much. It was good to take another look at the business again and every area I get to say hello – hello to the fishermen, hello to the people who come to

the shop, hello to the guests who come here – I love that side of it,” she says. And now, with eased restrictions, Kim is busy considering the future and how she can get back to offering a bit of everything so that more people can experience Saladin Lodge and maybe learn a little about its story. The shop has reopened, fishing has resumed, and B&B guests have been welcomed back. The next step is to get the exhibitions, concerts and other events running again, and, as she did after Black Saturday, Kim is summoning Saladin’s warrior spirit for a bit of extra courage. “We just have to be brave and set some dates. It will happen.” For more information on Saladin Lodge, including upcoming events, www. saladinlodge.com.au or call Kim on 0429 699 969

T

he Yea Wetlands annual platypus and rakali count is set to take place again on the first Friday in March this autumn. While platypus are pretty adept at evading the human eye, this waterside wildlife-spotting event is the perfect opportunity to see its lesserknown companion, which has been dubbed by some as Australia’s otter. Ron Litjens, who organises the Yea Wetlands count, says that while there’s only been one platypus spotted in the last four years during the hour-long session, most participants will spy a rakali. “They’re quite elusive, they’re quite shy, and they’re very aware of what’s going on around them. So if people make the slightest noise, rakali will know about it. Nonetheless, they’re out there, and all you’ve got to do is sit and watch. I could almost guarantee that if you sat on the side of the Yea River at one or two locations on any night, you would see a rakali,” he says. Rakali, the species’ Indigenous Australian name, are native rodents and more commonly known as water 22 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021

rats. However, with their swimming prowess and adaptations to aquatic life – streamlined body shape, partiallywebbed feet and glossy, quick-drying fur – it is easy to see why they are likened to otters. Rakali also occupy the position of top predator in aquatic environments across Australia as otters do on every other continent except Antarctica. Unfortunately, unlike otters, rakali are not animals that have secured a place of fondness in the public consciousness. To date, there has been very little research done on the species, and their status is poorly understood – circumstances the Australian Platypus Conservancy (APC) is striving to change using citizen science. And for those in the Murrindindi Shire who want to support this quest, the annual count is an excellent opportunity to do so. The cooler months are also a terrific time for citizen scientists to monitor the species because rakali are more active during the day in chilly weather. Rakali are intelligent, inquisitive creatures that expertly hunt a variety of other underwater life, including fish and crustaceans, and readily adapt to

a wide range of aquatic habitats (even more reasons the otter comparison is apt). Growing to around a kilogram, rakali have been known to take on prey much larger than themselves, such as ducks and water coots, giving them a reputation as formidable predators. Rakali will also venture onto land to forage for food, happily getting stuck into carrion or pinching dog food from people’s backyards. “By the nature of its feeding pattern, it’s a species that’s got to be very adaptable and very quick-thinking to take advantage of whatever’s there,” APC biologist Geoff Williams says. Rakali are predominantly nocturnal, but during the colder months, their daytime activity increases. This cool-weather behaviour is probably due to partly to rakali not being as good at regulating body temperature as other semiaquatic mammals like platypus. “It doesn’t cope with really cold temperatures as well, apparently, so one of the possibilities is that over the winter when temperatures are lower, it’s coming out in the day more to compensate for the cold. That’s one reason you’re more likely to see it in

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS IN THIS MAGAZINE

winter. The other reason is probably related to the breeding season, which we think kicks off in late winter the same as platypus. With water rats, from about May onwards seems to be when people start seeing them being active much more,” Geoff says. The APC welcomes information on any rakali sightings, and Geoff says that if you want to start looking for them, they’re a pretty easy to identify. “A big water rat is the same size as a small platypus, which is why people get them mixed up. It’s like the platypus in that you can normally pick it when it’s active by the ripple patterns it creates. It has a similar sort of diving pattern to a platypus in that it will dive down underwater and look for its food and be underwater for 20-30 seconds then pop up again. But unlike the platypus, which tends to pop up and then stay in one place while it gets its breath and chews its food, the water rat will keep going. The white tip to the tail on the rakali normally becomes apparent when they dive, and you see the white tip sticking up.” Ron also suggests keeping an eye out for evidence of their habitual feeding spots to know if you’ve got rakali living nearby.

“Rakali usually eat in the same place every time, so they develop a midden of shells and things, and that’s how you can tell if there are rakali around,” he says.

cane toads in rakali territory in the Kimberly region of Western Australia, rakali had adapted to hunt and dissect them to avoid their poisonous skin and glands.

In their position at the top of the food chain, rakali play a vital role in regulating species below them and maintaining balance within their ecosystems. Importantly, they target introduced pest species, providing a natural means of controlling these undesirables.

“Hopefully, if cane toads came to Victoria, if they came in small numbers, rakali could play a role in stamping them out before they get established, given there’s probably nothing else that’s naturally going to stop cane toads,” Geoff says.

“A good example is the role I think rakali play in keeping down some of the pest species of fish that have been introduced. They are good at catching and killing fish, and they show a preference for killing introduced fish as opposed to native fish. The introduced fish like carp, tench and roach are fairly slow-moving fish compared to many native species and therefore probably easier for the water rats to concentrate on, so they help keep the systems healthy,” Geoff says. Along with unwanted fish species, rakali are one of the only native predators that have figured out how to consume cane toads safely. Research published late 2019 in Australian Mammology reported that within two years of the arrival of

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS IN THIS MAGAZINE

As if all of this hasn’t made them endearing enough, rakali may also keep pesky introduced rodents at bay – somewhat ironically since the ‘rat’ label and connotations arising from introduced species are probably part of the reason rakali never garnered much public attention. “There is some evidence that they’re aggressive towards the introduced rats. It’s very early evidence, and it’s not known if they actually kill the introduced rats, but it’s certainly a possibility. So having the native rats around is probably a good thing in terms of keeping the bad rats out,” Geoff says. Having rakali around to do their good works, though, is something the APC’s Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021 – 23

The status of the rakali in Australia is poorly understood, although anecdotal evidence suggests their numbers in south-eastern Australia have declined in many locations since the mid-1990s. The Australian Platypus Conservancy is using citizen science to help change this. Photo courtesy C. Boekel.

research suggests is being adversely affected by factors we don’t yet understand. Using the power of citizen science, the APC collects ongoing data from the public regarding rakali and ran two community-based surveys in Victoria and the ACT between 2017 and 2019. For a species that doesn’t attract much in the way of research funding, Geoff says citizen science is invaluable. “The number of proper studies on rakali is negligible, and without the information we get in from citizen science, we really wouldn’t know very much about the species itself.” Through the Yea Wetlands surveys, annual surveys run by Strath Creek Landcare Group on King Parrot Creek and observations from individuals like Ron, who has reported rakali in a dam on his bush block in Flowerdale, data is slowly accumulating about Murrindindi

24 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021

Shire’s local population. However, as with the status of the species across the country, the picture of our local rakali is far from clear, and the APC’s research has possibly created more questions than answers, highlighting how much more work needs to be done to fully comprehend what’s going on. Of particular concern is the fact that in the APC’s large community-based surveys, rakali were found not to be thriving in places where, logically, they should. “For example, in the ACT, the species was very common in Lake Burley Griffin and Lake Ginninderra, two fairly large man-made lakes, but the species was almost totally absent from Lake Tuggeranong, which is an equivalent sort of water body. So it raises those sorts of questions; there’s a lot going on that we really don’t understand yet,” Geoff says.

The lack of knowledge and awareness of rakali seems unfair given that the otters they have so much in common with enjoy such celebrity in the animal world. Here, on one of the two otterless continents of the globe, perhaps it’s time to pay more attention to our otter equivalent and keep an eye out for them as temperatures start to drop. “It’s not a species we can take for granted until we get a better understanding of what’s going on, and we’re currently a long way from that,” Geoff says. This year’s Yea Wetlands platypus and rakali count will take place on Friday 5 March. Participation is free and anyone who wants to join in can meet at the Cummins Lagoon carpark at 7pm. The count will run from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. For more information or to report a rakali sighting, go to platypus.asn.au or Strath Creek Landcare’s focusonfauna.com

atching a group of white-winged choughs foraging quietly in the leaf litter in a patch of open woodland, it’s hard to believe these innocent-looking birds have earned the epithet of ‘bandits of the bush’. Their ‘crimes’ are impressive – marauding, ransacking, kidnapping and slavery. That’s quite a charge sheet! We’ll take a look at their criminal activities in just a moment, but first a few basic facts about these fascinating birds. White-winged choughs (pronounced ‘chuffs’) are large, black birds with white edges on their wings. However, the white on their wings is only visible when the birds are flying or displaying. When you see them perched or just wandering around, they are completely black. They are often mistaken for crows, ravens or currawongs, but their curved beaks and bright red eyes set them apart from these species. While both sexes look the same, juveniles have brown, rather than red, eyes and keep this colouring until they reach sexual maturity at four years of age. Choughs are found throughout eastern and south-eastern Australia with the exception of northern Queensland. Dry, open forests and woodlands are their preferred habitat. They are not particularly good flyers, usually opting to stroll through the bush, foraging for insects and seeds on the way and only taking to the air when disturbed or threatened. Choughs have been known to walk several kilometres a day in COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS IN THIS MAGAZINE

territories that can be as large as 1,000 hectares. You will often hear choughs before you see them. As they wander, they keep in touch with mellow, mournful descending whistles, which may explode into grating rasps and clicks if alarmed. Their breeding season is August to December when they build large, cup-shaped nests of mud mixed with grass and leaves into which they lay between two and five eggs. If mud is not available, they will use cow or emu dung. White-winged choughs differ from many other birds in that they are cooperative breeders. This means they live in family groups of eight to 20 birds, and all members of the group help to raise the chicks. A group usually consists of a pair of breeding birds and numerous young helpers who forgo their own chance to reproduce in order to secure the survival of the breeding

pair’s offspring. In fact, this species cannot breed without helpers, and groups with less than seven members rarely manage to raise chicks. Because of the importance of helpers in breeding success, it is perhaps not surprising that families of white-winged choughs have been known to kidnap juvenile birds from other groups to boost their workforce. They do this by launching an attack on the group, harassing the guardians and then luring the young birds away with elaborate displays of wing-waving, tail-wagging and eye-bulging. These kidnapped birds are then pressed into service, building nests, incubating eggs, feeding the young, cleaning the nest and defending the nestlings from predators. It could be considered a form of avian slavery! And, as it can take six to seven months for nestlings to reach maturity, these ‘slaves’ are in it for the long haul. However, these juvenile helpers are

not entirely under the thumb. In behaviour some would say is typical of youngsters, they have been observed to only pretend to feed the nestlings and, when no-one is looking, eat the food themselves. Conflict between groups is not confined to kidnapping. While aggression sometimes only involves displays of wing-waving, tail-wagging and eyebulging with a bit of pecking thrown in, it can escalate into a kind of gang warfare. When this happens, the nests of rival groups may be destroyed, along with the eggs. In one study, a researcher recorded a group of males destroying the nests of ten other groups – he nicknamed this group ‘the Mafia’. It seems aggressive behaviour is most likely to occur when food and resources are in short supply, such as during a drought. When times are good, whitewinged chough families tend to be more peaceable, rarely exhibiting the behaviour that has caused them to be dubbed the ‘bandits of the bush’.

hen a family has a shared vision to immerse themselves in their community and to share their expertise, you know there is a strong partnership behind the business. Al Seaton and his wife Briana are proud to be active community members within Mansfield and its surrounds. “As a team, we are committed to the community through our business High Country Tree Services (HCTS)” says Al. “At the very heart of HCTS, we enjoy working together. While most of Bri’s time is spent in the office and me outdoors, knowing that family, including our team of employees, is at the core of our business is what makes it work so well,” says Al. climbers and operators. They work with various equipment to professionally see to all your tree needs – pruning, stump removal, tree removal, tree care, and recycling. One of their core services is assisting with emergencies that arise from bush fires and other wild weather. They also tend to garden maintenance, block slashing and gutter cleaning. Like all business, HCTS has had its challenges, especially when COVID-19 hit in 2020. This was a time of uncertainty and worry for all and definitely not unique to the Seaton business. “The team still had mortgages to pay and families to support, and trees don’t stop having issues because of a pandemic,” says Al. “We adapted our work practices to keep our team safe and employed because we were unsure how long Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021 – 31

how we would operate in a ‘COVID-safe’ way to keep moving forward. They were all very responsive, and we all felt very lucky to remain an essential service during the lockdown periods,” says Al.

The pandemic became a time of learning and growth for HCTS and continues to be so.

“Trees add a lot of value to a town and community; they are a beautiful reminder of nature; they are great for the earth’s atmosphere, offer shade and are fun to climb. The younger generation must learn how important it is to look after, manage and preserve our trees, while also understanding the importance of a clean up after wild weather or bushfires so new growth can occur and then find the balance of leaving behind trees for fauna habitat.”

“2020 was the year of riding what we called ‘the COVID coaster’. With some moments of fun and joy and other moments of fear and uncertainty and desperately wanting to get off the ride,” says Bri. However, they pushed through, learnt the many lessons that came their way, gained more skills as individuals and as a team, learnt to adapt and pivot in their industry while always putting their team and clients’ needs to the forefront to keep the business alive and thriving. What this meant as a family business is that they had to work smarter to keep meeting their clients’ needs while also abiding by State laws. “While it wasn’t easy at first, with the constant changes and updates, Bri and I came together to keep the business running and educated our team about 32 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021

“Our children are the future of our landscape, and it turns out we have a local budding six-year-old arborist Levi Seaton, who has been playing ‘tree services’ with his mates at school. He has created a climbing harness from the swing seat and ropes and has assigned all his team (school friends) a task on the jobsite. It makes us so happy to see Levi’s imagination run wild and that his dad is such an important part in his future as a strong role model,” says Bri. Apart from knowing the future is in

good hands with Levi and eight-yearold daughter Lara, why do Al and Bri do what they do? Simply, because they and their team care about the environment and the future of their children and community. They feel privileged to be caretakers of nature and will continue to strive to do their very best, so a future can continue for all. Their business’s impact is more than just now; it is very much about investing in the future. HCTS also like to educate the community about looking after trees, and standards of laws around removing them and how a property can benefit from having them. They also share about what plants and trees are hazards and what should be removed. “When people ask me and Bri why we are so passionate about trees, we remind them to think about their importance in our daily lives. From food to shelter, furniture to paper, or an oasis to take a walk, trees provide us with much goodness in life. For us, this means we will continue to give the best possible care along with our team,” says Al. For more information visit www.highcountrytrees.com.au.

W

hether you’re enjoying your garden harvest or abiding by a seasonal eating philosophy, autumn is pumpkin time. And while many of us savour roast pumpkin or pumpkin soup in the autumn chill, we may neglect its sweeter side. To avoid missing out on all the pumpkin fun to be had this season, why not embrace the versatility of its orange flesh and try an American thanksgiving favourite: sweet spiced pumpkin pie. If you like pumpkin, you’ll love this dessert. INGREDIENTS Filling

Method

• 900 grams pumpkin, peeled and cut into 2cm cubes. Butternut, Kent or Queensland blue pumpkin varieties will all do the trick in this pie recipe. • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 large eggs • 1/3 cup panela or rapadura sugar • 2 tablespoons golden syrup • 1 cup thickened cream plus extra whipped cream to serve • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg • ½ teaspoon ground cloves • ½ teaspoon ground ginger • ½ teaspoon ground allspice • Icing sugar for dusting (optional)

1. To make the pastry, place the flour and salt in a food processor and pulse several times to combine. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add yolk and chilled water, then whiz until the mixture just comes together. Shape into a ball, wrap in cling film and put in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Pastry • 1 ¾ cups plain flour • ½ teaspoon salt • 90 grams butter, diced • 1 egg yolk • 1 tablespoon chilled water

2. While the pastry is chilling, preheat the oven to 200°C. Put the pumpkin in a single layer on a baking dish with the butter. Roast for 5 minutes, then make sure all pumpkin pieces are coated with butter. Roast for a further 35 minutes or until the pumpkin is tender. 3. Place the roasted pumpkin in a colander for 15 minutes to remove excess liquid. Blend the drained pumpkin in a food processor to make pumpkin puree. Set the puree aside to cool completely.

5. Roll out the pastry to around 5mm thick on a lightly floured surface. Line the quiche pan with the pastry, trimming any excess, and place in the fridge for 15 minutes. 6. Line the pastry with baking paper or foil and fill with uncooked beans or uncooked rice. 7. Bake the pastry case for 10 minutes at 200°C. Remove the baking paper/foil and beans/rice and bake the pastry for a further 5 minutes. 8. Reduce the oven to 190°C. 9. To make the filling, combine the pumpkin puree, eggs, sugar, golden syrup, cream, salt and spices in a mixing bowl until smooth. Pour the filling into the pastry case. Bake for 40 minutes or until the filling has set. 10. Let the pie cool to room temperature, dust with icing sugar and serve with whipped cream.

4. Grease a 23cm loose base quiche pan.

Archie, one of Lake Eildon’s keener anglers, holding a golden perch (yellowbelly) he caught in Lake Eildon.

T

he Lake Eildon Fishing Challenge is an annual, community based charity fishing competition held on Victoria’s premier inland fishery, Lake Eildon. The event began in 2017 as a small, tight knit competition hosted by the Jerusalem Creek Marina and Holiday Park when 82 participants battled it out to catch 80 fish. In 2018, we saw over 230 entrants catch double the amount of fish with a whopping $25,000 in prizes and giveaways thanks in no part to competition entries and the many avid sponsors. 2019 then backed it up with 250 entrants, over $30,000 in prizes and giving away a brand new Savage boat package. Needless to say there were smiles on many faces as people walked away with all sorts of prizes. After having to cancel the 2020 event, in what would have been the 4th annual fishing competition, it’s now

back on, raising much needed funds for charity. Our main benefactor is Variety, The Children’s Charity. Variety is a fantastic organisation whose sole purpose is to help kids be kids, to help ease the pressure on families who face unimaginable hardships and of course, put smiles on faces. Whilst the 2021 event will inevitably be run under a COVID Safety Plan it’s still going to be a fun, action packed weekend. The event will run from 14 to 16 May and all details can be obtained on our website lakeeildonfishingchallenge.com or our Facebook page Lake Eildon Fishing Challenge. There is an early bird registration prize if you register for the competition prior to 30 April. The competition is open to bait and or lure angling with or without a boat. The prize categories for the longest fish captured and released include Murray cod, yellowbelly, brown trout and

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS IN THIS MAGAZINE

rainbow trout. There are also junior prize categories to be won for the up and coming junior anglers. Over past events the off lake entertainment has been well received by competitors. Taylor Hunt from the Victorian Fisheries Authority has, in previous years, inspired the competitors showcasing his knowledge of both the quantity and whereabouts of the bait fish that are constantly being hunted by the predators that the anglers set out to catch. Bob Hazler from Lake Eildon Fishing has been instrumental in providing the pre-competition safety briefings alongside Peter Burtchell the local fishing guide. Merv Hughes and Bill Classon were memorable MC’s for the challenge and interacted well with all. This year’s off lake entertainment and MC’s are yet to be set and will be dependant on COVID rules that may be in place at the time of the competition. Brett McLoughlin, the competition’s Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021 – 41

founder, praised the efforts of all sponsors who have contributed their time, energy and funds into making the competition such a success in all previous years. A complete list of past and current sponsors can be found on the Challenge’s website. 42 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021

Bruce Vance, the proprietor of the Jerusalem Creek Marina and Holiday Park, thanked the efforts of all organisers, sponsors and participants in his address to the 2019 Lake Eildon Fishing Challenge on behalf of Variety as Captain of Variety Bash Car 501.

“On behalf of Variety the children’s charity, a heartfelt thank you. This amount will go a long way to assist children that do not have the same opportunities as most. Last year the fundraising efforts provided equipment to help children with their mobility: like wheelchairs, walking aids, rare and expensive medical equipment and services including insulin pumps, wigs, feeds, oxygen pumps as well as going towards technology, programs and scholarships that help children unlock all the joys of education and communication. Thank you so much and I look forward to even a bigger and better event next year”, says Bruce. If you are up to the challenge mark your diary and make your way to Lake Eildon for a weekend of fishing, competition and entertainment. Boatel accommodation is available on the lake and foreshore camping at the Jerusalem Creek Marina, or you can book a houseboat with lakeeildonhouseboats. com.au (0459 027 908) or check out many other camping and hotel accommodation places around Eildon. So bring the family along and have a crack, there will be heaps of prizes for both kids and adults and even if you don’t catch a fish, you can still sit back and take in the serenity of beautiful Lake Eildon.

F

ive years on and the event continues to grow. CycleDindi 21 will return for a fifth time in six years on Saturday 17 April and will showcase the wonderfully scenic Great Victorian Rail Trail, through the Shires of Murrindindi and Mansfield. Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Yea and Alexandra with assistance from the Friends of the Great Victorian Rail Trail, CycleDindi 21 is a fully supported, family friendly bicycle ride that starts at either Alexandra, Bonnie Doon or Yea depending on what distance the rider wishes to do and which starting location is easier to access. There are three choices of long rides depending on where you start (Bonnie Doon or Yea) and where you ride to. These rides are either 121kms or 80kms. The short

rides are either 61kms, 42kms or 26kms and are either from Yea to Cathkin, Yea to Alexandra or Alexandra to Cathkin. Lunch (provided) is by the Goulburn River on a private property at Cathkin and riders always enjoy this scenic and peaceful location. Prices are for Adults (discounts for Seniors) with school age children just $10, no matter which ride they select. (See ad page 30). Gentle gradients along much of the route make it suitable for most ages and fitness levels and the trail is a beautiful journey, traversing rolling hills with stunning views and a ride through the historic Cheviot Tunnel. There is fun to be had in the shearing shed, with a chance to view sheep dogs at work. This will happen at a working Australia’s largest retail fern nursery set amidst natural bushland.

I

nspired by a quote from her father, John Rennie, whose love and knowledge of this land was without bounds: “There’s nothing like walking over a place. You have to live there, walk over the ground, to get a feel of it”, Marian used this insight as the theme for a sculpture exhibition. Within the Land – Sculpture in Acheron is an exciting, artistic event showcasing sculpture in Marian Rennie’s historic rural garden at Rennies at Acheron, 132 Breakaway Road, Acheron. After delays due to Covid restrictions and the upheaval of the past year, Rennies Gallery and Little River Wines are thrilled to be once again hosting this event. The exhibition will run from Friday, 2nd April to Tuesday, 6th April (Easter) and again on Friday, 23rd April to Tuesday, 26th April (Anzac Long Weekend) A cocktail party on Thursday, 1st April from 5pm to 8pm will kick off the proceedings. The licensed restaurant/cafe will be open on each day for the duration. Entry to the exhibition throughout the garden will be by gold coin donation at the gate. Tickets for the Cocktail Party are $25pp and available through Marian on 0412 109 129.

As the title suggests, the sculpture show’s theme is a journey through landscape, nature, the Australian bush and its inherent profoundness, quirkiness, characters, as well as the emotion and celebration all that inspires. Following the success of the inaugural exhibition and show in 2018, it’s anticipated that Within the Land – Sculpture Show at Acheron will become a biannual event and encourage established and emerging artists and sculptors from across Australia to display their works and engage with other artists and a diverse, interested community. Local, interstate and indigenous artists are encouraged to participate as this is a unique opportunity to exhibit and sell work in a renowned garden, surrounded by extensive farm and bushland along the Goulburn River, located just two hours from Melbourne. At the 2018 event, the show consisted of over 150 exhibits from Australian and international sculptors and botanical artists. As a result, 1800 visitors were drawn to Acheron and district and more than 40% of the works were sold. Organisers hope to achieve similar success at this year’s event.

ave you ever had an argument with someone that made you feel like your head was about to explode? As it turns out that feeling like a heated discussion is overworking your brain to bursting point may not be too far from the truth. Research by a Yale University-led team, published in Frontiers of Human Neuroscience this January, found that people who disagree with each other have very different brain activity to those who agree with each other. Nineteen pairs of adults had conversations about controversial topics while their brain activity was monitored using a technique called functional near infrared spectroscopy. With this technique, participants don a special cap with optical sensors that scans their brains while they perform tasks. Participants were paired up so their opinions on a topic either matched or mismatched to find out what their brains would do under these different conditions. When people were on the same page, their brains reflected the conversation’s harmonious state with similar patterns of COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS IN THIS MAGAZINE

calm activity. That is, their brains were calmly in sync with one another. And it was the sensory areas of their brains such as the visual system that were most active, which may indicate a focus on their conversation partner’s social cues. In contrast, discord in a conversation produced brain activity that was out of sync and suggested disagreeing brains were working much harder than those who agreed. During a disagreement, rather than being focused on sensory areas, brain activity was focused in the regions involved in higher cognitive functions, such as the frontal lobes. This pattern of activity in a dispute may indicate the effort participants had to put into combatting one another’s viewpoints. Researchers suggested that understanding what people’s brains do while agreeing and disagreeing is especially important in a polarised political environment. This knowledge may also be useful for picking the best times to engage in lively debate. At the end of a long day, when your head is already feeling full, it could pay to sidestep the hot-button topics and find some common ground to keep your brain calm. Or maybe just agree to disagree. n 2004, Dennis Spiteri opened his ‘Hillcrest’ studio and gallery in the Highlands. This striking building, set atop the tranquil rolling hills of central Victoria and looking over to the distant Tallarook Ranges, has become a popular cultural attraction in the region.

Above: The artist with paintings from his ‘Helios’ series. Below: Dennis working on his ‘Song of the Earth’ series.

As a professional artist for fifty years, Dennis has built his studio/gallery to produce and exhibit his work. This marvellous venue has also been used for musical performances in conjunction with his exhibitions. For Dennis, it has been a long journey to this beautiful property containing the studio and gallery. It began in Malta in 1948 and has continued in Australia since 1954. Growing up in the Victorian town of Morwell, he began his art training there and then moved to Melbourne to complete it, finally graduating in 1969 from National Gallery Art School (now Victorian College of the Arts). He has worked in rented studios in the city and suburbs for most of his professional life but always dreamed of having his own specially designed space in the country. From an early age, Dennis had a love of art. Even in Malta as a child, he loved drawing. So it was inevitable that by his late teens he had begun what was to be a four-year art course. It was reading a book on Van Gogh that steered him towards painting in his mid-teens. He responded to Van Gogh’s passion and commitment towards his art and recognised it in himself. Van Gogh confronted him with himself and showed him that making art wasn’t about putting pretty pictures on

people’s walls – it was a journey of selfdiscovery that you were meant to follow through to the end no matter what depths of despair you went through on the way. In the late 1970s, Dennis’ work began to change. The tight geometrical paintings he had been doing since art school disappeared, and he began to experiment with freer forms. He went through a five-year period of experimentation with different techniques and styles trying to find a new way forward, which he found in 1983. It was during this period that he became disillusioned with the commercial gallery scene and the ‘art world’ in general. He began dreaming of one day having his own studio and

gallery to exhibit his work in. In 1997, after about ten years of patiently looking for the ideal property, Dennis discovered Hillcrest, an old farming property in Highlands, about 20 kilometres northwest of Yea. Most of its 46 acres had been cleared as grazing land, but Dennis immediately set out to revegetate it, planting about five thousand trees so far. In 2004 he finally built his ‘country studio’. The large scale of the building has been designed to fit around his large-scale abstract paintings. Classical music informs most of Dennis’ work. Each of the series of paintings he has produced has had particular pieces of music at the core – beginning Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021 – 51

Above: The Planets – a series of nine paintings. with his Mass in 1972 (inspired by Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis), to his latest group of paintings called Symphonies, which will be exhibited in April to May this year. The advent of Classical music coming into his life and work made his path clear. All the work he has done since has been an attempt towards a certain goal – not only to capture the essence of particular works of music through each individual painting, but also through making each painting as part of a series that, when hung and seen

together as a cohesive exhibition, could be experienced like music, as different movements of a larger work. Besides the many paintings he has produced, he has also published a novel Confronting Mephistopheles, and a monograph in three volumes, Dennis Spiteri Paintings 1969-2015. There has also been a feature-length documentary film made about his life and work titled In Pursuit of Ecstasy: A Portrait of Dennis Spiteri. The environment surrounding him adds to the serenity needed for him to think

and create. It is an environment which, thanks to the hard work he has put into it, has now become a botanical garden. Dennis Spiteri continues to work in relative isolation on his property in Highlands pouring his heart and soul into his very personal paintings. Upcoming exhibition Sunday 11 April to Sunday 9 May, 10am to 4pm at Hillcrest Studio, 33 Old Highlands Road, Highlands. Ian Wood is a multi-talented artist who just loves living in Eildon. Ian is having an exhibition at MiRa in Marysville during May and June 2021.

S

ince moving into his hew house in Eildon in October 2019, Ian Wood has not only been writing his second novel and second book of poetry and short stories but also spending time exploring this region he has fallen in love with. “There are so many wonderful sights to see and so much to explore – there’s the lake, the pondage, the rivers, the bush, mountain trails and back roads. I just love living here,” he said of his time so far. Meanwhile, Ian has been spending time

to get his second novel completed by July/August this year. His first novel, Hidden in the Light, was launched internationally on 14 January 2021. He is now over halfway into his second novel, which he began writing in September 2018. Both of his new books should be released in October 2021. The future will no doubt present some interesting scenarios for Ian because his publisher wants to explore securing film rights for his second novel, such is her confidence in the incredible account of events that are topical and controversial

within the character-driven storyline. In 2009 Ian re-entered the Melbourne spoken-word scene after an absence of more than 35 years. In August 2018 he released his first book of poetry and short stories, The Ends Don’t Meet. His poignant works range from the philosophical to the emotionally charged but with enough touches of wit and humour to make an extremely rewarding and insightful read. As well as performing his works in Melbourne, Ian has performed to audiences in Europe and the USA. Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021 – 55

Ian is also an artist having exhibitions in Australia, Sausalito (California) and on board a six-star luxury cruise ship as it sailed from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. From November 2020 to early January 2021 the Convent Gallery, Daylesford held its third exhibition of some of his newer works. “I find that both fields of endeavour feed each other as I actively pursue the creation of new art works or continuing to write. I alternate between the two quite easily,” he said when asked about the effort required to pursue two separate career paths simultaneously. So far, his time in Eildon has seen him begin only one art project, which he is currently working on.

56 – Murrindindi Guide – AUTUMN 2021

“It’s a big fibreglass koala that I was given by Haileybury College, the school I used to go. The idea is to create an original, expressive idea on the surface of the koalas then auction them to raise funds for the rehabilitation of native wildlife destroyed in the horrendous bushfires of the summer of 2019/2020. “Originally, they were to be finished and auctioned in mid-2020, but the lockdown due to coronavirus prevented a crowd gathering for the event and the auction. Hopefully, the auction can take place this year and all the koalas will be in one place revealing the creative ideas that have been painted on them. “The school also asked three other exstudents who are artists to apply their creative processes to the large, moulded pieces,” he offered when asked about

the colourful koala sitting in the corner of his dining area. About two dozen other koalas were given to students throughout the college campuses for the same purpose. Ian began a new series of drawings in February this year based on his vision of the similarities between the human female form and coastal formations. A gallery in Victoria has already agreed to have the opening exhibition of the works. Ian will be endeavouring to finish the works by the end of 2021 for the exhibition proposed for March 2022. “As I headed into 2021, I was starting two new art projects while continuing to complete both new books. The koala project has to be finished by mid-March, and the book publisher would like the manuscripts to my second novel and

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS IN THIS MAGAZINE

second book of poetry by August/ September this year.” Before exploring new career paths in fine art and writing, Ian was an interior designer successfully completing many residential and commercial projects. He also designed numerous items and ranges of furniture as well as floor rugs, lighting, fabrics and wallpapers. During his interior design career nearly half that time was in his own company, Ian Wood Managed Interiors Pty Ltd. “Helping people achieve better-thanexpected results was an enjoyable, creative process requiring precise management of every detail. But it also involved creating aesthetically appealing interiors to suit the purpose of the building, giving me a love for the years of my career as an interior designer,” Ian added. There are certainly pressures on him for this coming year, but Ian is nonetheless working towards a productive year of hopefully achieving satisfying and successful results with all that he will be doing.

But there will be times for recreation too – bush walks, further exploration of this lovely region of Victoria and going out on the lake in his kayak to breathe in the fresh air and see the magnificent vistas at every turn. In relaxation mode he will play music in his loungeroom. Yes, Ian is also a musician but rarely performs in public anymore. “I haven’t done a paying gig for at least four years and the last one was the first in quite a while too.” “But I’ve got more than enough to do with art and writing to keep me busy for 2021 so I’m not pursuing a career path in music at this stage.” Judging by what he has achieved to date it would not be a surprise to one day be holding and playing a CD of his songs and music. As has been said before, ‘watch this space’. For copies of his books or artwork contact Ian at: ianwood@ ianwoodart.com or visit http://www. ianwoodart.com/

lans are well advanced for the 2021 Rotary Club of Alexandra Easter Art Show, April 2nd-5th.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 Show due to COVID-19, precautions to reduce the risk of spread of disease are at the forefront of planning considerations for the upcoming Show. The Show is an important feature of the social and cultural life of Alexandra, showcasing traditional and contemporary works on paper and canvas, as well as photography, sculptures and fine woodwork from local craftspeople. At the gala Opening Night, from 7pm on Good Friday evening, prizes will be awarded to winners in the categories of Original Artwork, Any Medium, Oil or Acrylic, Work on Paper, Any Medium priced up to $750, Emerging Artist, and Woodwork. A light supper will be served, in a Covid-safe manner. The Most Popular Artwork is decided by public vote, so will be announced at the conclusion of the Show. big thank you to residents and visitors alike for all the custom over Christmas and the holiday period, and for all the humbling comments about how lovely it is to have us back – it’s good to be back! We’ve missed our gorgeous customers and community! And what a journey it was to re-open!! We are ever so grateful for the shift to the ‘one person per two square metre’ ruling that made it possible for us to operate with some semblance of normality. It’s great to be open more than just ‘by appointment’. But we are under no illusion that life is going to go totally back to ‘normal’

and will also be at the Show as demonstrating artist on Saturday afternoon. Our judge this year is Christie Tiani, who has formal training in design and photography, and has worked in journalism and editorial design. Her current work includes acrylic and watercolour paintings, cross process photography, and graphic art prints. During Covid19 shutdown, when overseas travel ceased, she created Juc Parc, a curated gallery space for artists to collaborate and exhibit emerging talent and creativity. Christie brings a fresh critical eye to the work on display at our Show; her feedback is eagerly anticipated. The Show could not go ahead without the support of many local businesses through sponsorships, advertising in the catalogue, and provision of technical and equipment advice. 2020 was a very difficult year for small business , so this continued support is greatly appreciated. Thanks also to all the members of the Rotary Club of Alexandra for their many hours of work in planning and staging the 51st Easter Art Show (Covid permitting). Thanks also to community members for their support of activities, buying raffle tickets and assistance when asked.

She’ll be back as soon as she can – in the meantime, the gift shop has spread out, and we’re enjoying the extra display space! So, pop in and check out what’s new – it changes virtually daily. T

hey’re back! Artistic duo, Antiquate’s upholstery artist, Kerri Hollingsworth, and award-winning fibre artist, Zetta Kanta, have once again delivered an enthralling collaboration titled: Romney + Quinn. After receiving a ‘Community Projects and Events’ grant from the Murrindindi Shire Council in 2020, the pair decided to break the art world’s unspoken rules and give the public access to the entire creative process – something rarely ever done by artists. Kerri and Zetta opened their hearts and minds to illustrate the power of imagination and show us that we can cultivate creativity no matter what’s happening around us. Romney + Quinn is more than an art collaboration; it’s a reflection of the intricacy and complexity of life. It’s an example of the magic that emerges from those ‘uh-oh’ moments. It reminds us that we can forge a new path and a fresh perspective if we welcome opportunity. Meet Romney + Quinn The two chairs named Romney + Quinn showcase an avant garde way of utilising natural fibres, textures, and upholstery techniques to evoke powerful emotions igniting people’s desire to connect with the pieces. “Touch is what connects humans to our environment, each other and our work. Our underpinning mission is always to get people to feel something, and that will vary from person to person,” Kerri says. “Exactly! Romney + Quinn is deeply personal to us, which means it has the potential to be deeply personal to others – in what way, that’s not for us to decide. We simply aim to move our audiences through what we create,” Zetta says.

Zetta Kanta: Zetta’s home studio is located in South Gippsland, overlooking Wilsons Promontory. The ever-changing skyline and rolling hills are a striking signature theme running through her large scale tapestries. Zetta lives with her husband Simon York, a singer/ songwriter (with a new album coming out soon). Zetta often collaborates with Simon writing song lyrics and music arrangements, while Simon helps in the workshop with tapestries. For more visit zettakanta.com. Photo The AC Image The Artist’s Studio Unlocked In December last year, the artists felt an undeniable urge to share the Romney + Quinn experimentation process, divulging its lessons and the emotional journey. “Social media became the vessel enabling our audience to cocreate with us from wherever they were in the world. This was especially important during lockdown when virtual interaction was the most crucial form of connection. When people were stuck at home, why not invite them to participate in a creative endeavour?” Kerri says. There’s been many unexpected twists and turns from the project’s conception. The most memorable is witnessing the emotional rollercoaster they experienced when submerging their work into an eco dye bath – something neither of them had expertise in – while desperately hoping their vision would manifest successfully. It was a moment where the world held its breath. Thankfully their mutual devotion to Romney + Quinn and the Left: Quinn’s upholstery art taking shape with 100% natural fibres intertwined to create a textural feast. Piece by piece the art comes alive. Photo The AC Image. social community cheering them on, Kerri and Zetta rose to their feet with each challenge and illuminated what true artistry is. When asked about the overall experience, they’re quick to highlight the personal impact the project has had. “Working with Kerri is always so easy and fun. We laughed a lot as we explored and pondered the meaning of our project. But for me, Romney + Quinn was an anchor while the storm raged throughout the world, and my life,” Zetta says. Kerri added, “I agree. As artists, it’s been an incredible reminder that creativity never dies and it’s up to us to use what’s happening externally (and internally) as fuel for producing new masterpieces. Reinvention is not just for art, but also how we live daily.” Observing the pair as they intuitively meld their unique upholstery techniques to find a united flow and harmonious style is magic in motion. Knowing they’ve navigated over 100 hours of weaving using natural fibres and recycled textiles, you can truly appreciate the exquisite sensory delight that is now Romney + Quinn.
