SUE SCHREIBER, FLOWERDALE

Flowerdale fertile ground for artists By Anthony Mitrow

LIFE in Flowerdale is a major inspiration for Sue Schreiber. The artist moved to her hilltop sanctuary about three years ago with partner and photographer Nigel Kenny. Sue, who spent many years in Diamond Creek, knew nearby Kinglake well, but moving to Flowerdale had never been on the radar. “We just happened across this property. We weren’t even looking. Within a week it was done,” she said. “Most of my work features flora and fauna so I love being on a property where you’ve got such great wildlife.” With wedge-tailed eagles often flying low through the lush green valley her corner studio overlooks, it’s easy to see the attraction. “It’s good for your soul. It’s vital to me,” Sue said. The pair is eagerly establishing roots in Murrindindi, with Sue soon to start offering art classes and workshops at the Y Water Centre at Yea Wetlands. “It will be weekly classes of a small number – up to six people. That’s a great thing

Artist Sue Schreiber at home in her Flowerdale studio. Photo courtesy Nigel Kenny. because it can be really personalised and focus on what the students want and need individually,” she said. “I’m also looking at doing monthly workshops that will focus on specific subjects, for example the first one planned is focusing on birds.” A broad background as a professional artist and teacher means Sue is able to offer her students a versatile

and varied curriculum. “I’ve done art my whole life. I did a Bachelor of Fine Art – Printmaking. I found I couldn’t continue in printmaking at that time because of the toxicity of the solvents used, so after I finished the degree I taught for about nine years,” she said. “I realised my style was too realistic for what was being

promoted at college at the time – they were more into abstract and interpretive meaning, so I went back and I did a degree in illustration. “After that I went into more commercial illustration-type work, for which the realistic (style of ) work was more suited to at that time. “I did some commission work, I did a range of greeting cards which are

still on sale around Murrindindi. I started going more into design. “Now I’m doing surface pattern design – textile. A lot of it is computer-based. “I want to get further into that and am working at putting together my own range of design-ware like wallpapers, cushions, curtains – fabric and textiles. “The other thing I’m really taken with now is scratchboard. I love it. It’s starting to get a bit of an audience in Australia. It’s really popular in America. “It’s basically a bit of Masonite on the back, then a layer of clay, then a layer of ink on top. You use inks and surgical tools to paint on, and then scratch back, until you have your image.” Last year Sue completed a workshop on printing using the reduction linocut technique. It was a revelation, with Sue discovering the solvents that had caused her discomfort when she was at university were no longer required. “The inks are (still) oilbased but (now) they are water-soluble. There are no solvents; you can just wash it out with water. It’s great you still get the luminosity of the oil–based without the

need for toxic solvents,” she said. “Printing was my big love, and now that I can go back to it, it’s really cool.” It is an exciting time for artists, with technological advancements, digital platforms and the information superhighway opening up a world of possibilities. “It’s great being able to combine digital work with images created by hand,” Sue said. “Some of the work I’m producing now with the surface pattern design ends up being a concoction of my photography, drawing, painting, and digital design.” As a child, it seemed Sue’s destiny would see her follow the rest of the family into more scientific endeavours, but once she had a taste for art, it was hard to forget. “My whole family is in medicine and science,” she said. “I remember doing art in high school and I loved it. I went out into the workforce for about two or three years and that was enough.” Though following your passions is important, Sue said being adaptable and realistic about them is essential.

Above: ‘Sunkissed’, an example of Sue’s scratchboard art. “You’re only here once and you don’t know how long for, but as an artist you’ve got to be versatile and you’ve got to strike a balance (between livelihood and creativity),” she said. “It’s been interesting for me to go from fine art to illustration to design – it’s the full spectrum. “It’s important to follow your passions in life, but you’ve got to make it work for you, and that can be incredibly difficult.” But though making art profitable is a difficult challenge for producers, Sue said its value is eternal. “Art gives you a picture of

society. It’s a statement on what is around you, what is influencing you, what is in the world at that time,” she said. For more information, or to book classes, phone 0438 139 045, email sue@ katzart.com.au or go to katzartdesigns.com.

Bubbles . . . AUSTRALIAN SPARKLING WINE SHOW MARYSVILLE

NOW in its fifth year, the Australian Sparkling Wine Show Marysville, from Tuesday 21st to Tuesday 28th October, is the only dedicated sparkling wine show in Australia. The event is gaining strong momentum and credibility in the wine industry, with ongoing support from major partner Dan Murphy’s taking the event to the next level. TFE Hotels, the hotel group that will operate the Vibe Marysville, opening later this year, have cemented their involvement in the show by hosting the 2014 Awards Gala Dinner and Masterclass at the Vibe Savoy. The location of the Vibe Savoy, right in the heart of Melbourne will encourage greater participation from the wine industry and will also be a great opportunity to showcase Marysville to Melbournians.

In 2014 the show welcomes back ‘International Champagne Writer of the Year 2011’ Tyson Stelzer to host the Masterclass, with CHR Hansen coming on board as the sponsor for this event. Major General Greg Melick has been announced as this

Whilst predominately a wine industry event, there are plenty of opportunities for the community to get involved, including the annual business breakfast held at Black Spur Inn. At the community tasting

evening in Marysville, for a gold coin donation, you will receive a barbecue dinner and a sample of some of the best sparkling wines in the nation. Sponsored by Upwey Community Bank this year’s business breakfast is sure to once again draw a crowd. Whilst the guest speaker is currently still under wraps, past speakers have included

Pans on ffiire . . .

The Pans on Fire team.

Out of the fire and into the pans By Tony Richardson IN the wake of the February 2009 bushfires in Victoria, the Triangle District located in the east of the Murrindindi Shire comprising the townships of Marysville, Narbethong, Granton, Buxton and Taggerty saw a number of arts and culture projects emerge to help the bushfire affected population to cope with the recovery process. Whilst the majority were visual arts projects, the Triangle Community Steelbands project was one of the few initiatives involving participants in regularly making music in a group setting. The project started in mid-2009 when Taggerty resident Rita Seethaler visited her homeland of Switzerland to see her sick mother. While she was there, she talked with friends with whom she had played steel pans for many years before coming to Australia. She talked about the fires (which everyone had seen on television) and the social upheaval they had caused. At the same time, Regional Arts Victoria had just offered quick response grants to encourage artists to work on arts recovery programs in their communities. This seeded the idea for Rita to apply for a grant to start a steel band in Marysville and the Triangle District. Some of her Swiss friends immediately offered donations of steel pans they were no longer using. So, Rita returned to Australia with a germ of an idea, and a few used steel pans, and was successful in securing a modest grant from Regional Arts Victoria. 14 – Murrindindi Guide – Spring 2014

Rita then succeeded in getting Werner Egger, a Swiss pan maker and tuner, to volunteer to come to Australia and make the pans required. Werner got in touch with an old friend, Trinidadian Lennox Jordan, who was living on the Sunshine Coast. Together they made and tuned a set of pans, while Brad Harkin (a backpacker and musician who had stayed at Rita’s place after the fires) built the stands on which to hang the pans. In late-2009, a gathering at Rita’s house unveiled the pans, and listened to Lennox Jordan show the type of music that could be created. Over the following 12 months, a group of people from the Triangle District, with virtually no prior knowledge of steel pans and relatively little musical training, came together to form Pans on Fire (the first of the Triangle Community Steelbands) to learn, practice, perform and have fun in each other’s company. Led by Rita, the group gained ability and confidence, and realised the importance of music. The result was a bunch of enthusiastic pan players, who – after just twelve months of learning and rehearsal – were able to deliver several uplifting public performances in Marysville and surrounds, playing various music styles and rhythms, and bringing pride, happiness and joy into their communities. Since then, three more bands have formed in the Triangle District - Hot Pans, Jammin’ and Buxton Primary Steelband - while Pans on Fire has gone from strength to strength. Together they have established Marysville and the Triangle District as the steelband capital of Australia. In the past few years, Pans on Fire have played at numerous

music festivals (Apollo Bay, Yackandandah, Brunswick, Lakes Entrance), several times at Federation Square in Melbourne, at the 2014 Australia Day Concert at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl (in a joint performance with the Melbourne Ska Orchestra), and in the Moomba Festival Parade in 2014. They also organised, and participated in, the first Australian Steelband Festival in Marysville in April 2013, where they took out the award for Best Emerging Talent. Their journey so far has been unbelievable, especially to themselves, but in August 2014 it rises to new heights of unbelievability, when they undertake their first overseas tour to play a series of concerts in south west France. Over a two week period in August and September, they will play at eight events in and around the town of Moissac (just north of Toulouse). They will also participate in a series of medieval music workshops, trying to marry two very disparate music styles – Occitan medieval music and Caribbean steel pans. But, as has been demonstrated so many times over the past five years, this group of people is willing to undertake virtually any challenge.

Bridal fashion . . . Yappers . . .

YEA Artistic Performing Persons Entertaining Rural Society (YAPPERS) began in 2013 when a small group of keenly interested thespians decided to gather and create an outlet for like-minded performing artists. Their first show, a play “Farmer Will Swap Combine Harvester for Wife”, was such a success that they decided to put together a collection of short performances for the Yea Arts Carnivale in January this year. This too was met with enthusiastic affirmation, so they resolved to launch out into the musical scene. The play Nunsense was chosen for its humour, cast size, and because some of the YAPPERS were familiar with it and loved it! Later in the year more goodies are in store for you; an evening of one-act plays, and a murder mystery weekend at Flowerdale. “We want YAPPERS to be an integral part of the Yea and surrounding community with an ongoing commitment to local community theatre,” spokesperson Deb Lesley said. The YAPPERS meet on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at Yea Community House and if you are interested in joining the group contact Deb on 0400 077 692, or ring Yea Community House on 5797 3070.

Jamieson . . .

JAMIESON is a small, historic town in north eastern Victoria nestled in a beautiful valley on the banks of the Jamieson River. It is a great place to visit at any time but especially in spring when the many deciduous trees, some planted over a hundred years ago, come to life and the calendar is full of many and varied events. Coming off the back of a very successful inaugural autumn festival this year the small, but enthusiastic, community has been hard at work over the winter months to prepare for the spring festivities. Jamieson Spring Aussie Icon Ball To start things off, the Jamieson Spring Aussie Icon Ball is to be held on Saturday 6th September in the memorial hall kicking off at around 7.30pm. You are encouraged to come along dressed as your favourite Aussie icon. Tickets are $20 per person, BYO drinks and

A TOWN FOR ALL SEASONS

glasses and in real country tradition ladies are asked to bring a plate to share for supper. Music will be provided by local legendary musician Denis Tucker. On the night there will be raffles and a silent auction with proceeds divided evenly between the Mansfield and District Hospital and the Jamieson community towards the purchase of a much needed event marquee. Last year’s ball raised over $5,600.

The Jamieson Ball

High Country Rod Muster On the weekend of Friday 19th to Sunday 21st September Jamieson will host the High Country Rod Muster, with over 300 rodders and more than 100 hot rods and customized cars descending on the small town. If you want to see and get up close to some of the best hot rods in Australia and meet the very friendly and community minded rodders, Jamieson is the place to be. This will be the eighth year of this very successful event with

organisers saying it looks like being the biggest so far. The weekend program will include a car boot sale, mini swap meet, duck race on the Jamieson River, billy cart race, cow poo lotto, live music at the Courthouse Hotel and most cars will be on display around the town all weekend.

Wine and cheese night

Wine and cheese night 20 – Murrindindi Guide – Spring 2014

One of the weekend highlights on the Saturday between 5pm and 6pm is ‘Wokka’s Cruise’; the hot rods and customised cars cruise down the main street of Jamieson and circulate around town at a slow pace to the 50’s Rock & Roll music emanating from the Courthouse Hotel. The atmosphere is magic as the public line the streets or gather on the veranda of the pub to watch. The cruise is named in memory of Wokka, a rodder who loved the High Country Rod Muster. There is no charge for the public who are welcome to wander around town, check out the cars and events and absorb the atmosphere.

Wine and cheese night Another very important date on the Jamieson calendar is the annual Wine and Cheese night. Now in its 33rd year it attracts local and international wine and cheese makers. This year’s event will be held on Saturday 11th October in the Jamieson Memorial Hall. For an entry fee of only $35 you receive a commemorative wine tasting glass, get to sample some of the best wine and cheese available in Australia, try some locally brewed beer and locally produced cider. During the evening selected wines, cheese platters and other items will be auctioned to raise funds for the Jamieson Primary School. For further information on these events or other Jamieson enquiries contact the Jamieson Community Group on email, jamocommunity@gmail.com or check out our website www.jamieson.org.au.

Kevington . . .

AFTER your visit to Jamieson head south to Kevington, it’s just around a couple of corners (about 11 kilometres) on the Mansfield-Woods Point Road, and call into the Kevy Pub (also know as the Kevington Hilton) for a drink and a meal. The town began as a small settlement in the gold rush era at a new find in the Upper Goulburn Valley on the road between Jamieson and Gaffneys Creek, at a place then know as Mack’s Creek. In 1862 John and Mary Garrett from Beechworth opened a beerhouse on the banks of the Goulburn River at Mack’s Creek, ‘Garrett’s Beerhouse’, servicing the hordes of thirsty miners swarming into the district . When gold was discovered at the nearby Lucks All and Star of the West mines, the settlement grew to include stores, butchers and private residences and the area was surveyed and named Kevington. Eventually the town died and the post office at Mack’s Creek (opened in 1865) was renamed Kevington in 1884, sadly closing in 1974. The beerhouse became known as the Polar Hotel and eventually the Kevington Hotel, a permanent stopover with accommodation available. Mary and John had eleven children and the pub remained in their hands until 1957. Clarrie and Elsie Poole (who also had eleven children) took over the pub after the Garretts making the history of the pub a real family affair. Sold out of the Poole family in 1986, in 2007 after 21 years and three different owners and numerous lessees, the hotel was purchased by Lyn-Maree and Wayne Poole, Wayne being the grandson of Clarrie and Elsie. The Kevington Hotel is the last remaining example of a hotel built in the gold rush era of the 1860’s in the Upper Goulburn region – Lyn-Maree and Wayne have lovingly restored the hotel and upgraded the kitchen and dining room area so customers can sit and relax and picture what life would have been like 150 years earlier. Kevington can also be accessed via Eildon on the EildonJamieson Road which winds up through the mountains and past Big River. It’s a great ride or drive since the road has been sealed – just be careful as some of the corners are pretty tight and narrow – take the time to pull over and enjoy the spectacular views over Lake Eildon and surrounds.

The Kevington Hotel started as Garrett’s Beer House in the Gold Rush of 1862. It is now the last example of a historic hotel left in this part of Victoria, Australia. Located 250km north east of Melbourne, the refurbished hotel is an ideal spot for a base to explore Lake Eildon, the Goulburn River Inlet and the lush bush land of Jamieson and surrounding areas of the pub itself. RESTAURANT Inside dining, outside dining–the choice is yours. With a newly refurbished kitchen and dining room, and a first-rate chef cooking a seasonal menu, the Kevington Hotel is an excellent place for lunch or dinner with traditional pub fare. Smoking success . . .

Smoking success in Thornton By Anthony Mitrow DISCERNING gourmands and clued up locals have been making their way to Thornton Butcher & Deli, also known as The Thornton Smokehouse, for more than a decade. Owners Jeff Gambrill and Wendy Sharp may have hoped their small rustic business would afford them a relaxing semi-retirement in sleepy Thornton, but the couple are proud of the quality products that are keeping them busy and in demand. Jeff and Wendy say there’s been many stories over the years, of success and very appreciative customers,

including strangers who only knew about Thornton because of the fine products produced by the butchery and smokehouse. “I’ve had a bloke from Western Australia call me and tell me he’ll be arriving in three weeks, giving me the date just so I make sure I don’t run out of beef jerky for him,” Jeff said. “We often do run out because people come in and buy one or two hundred dollars worth at a time. Some come back and tell me it’s the best beef jerky they’ve ever had.” Though travellers looking for authentic, home-made country produce account

Owner Jeff Gambrill believes consistency and quality are the keys to success. for more than half of the shops sales, Jeff and Wendy also have a dedicated local following and supply many organisations including Kellock Lodge, Darlingford Nursing Home, and the Outdoor Education Group. The original inspiration for the project came from a combination of Jeff’s childhood memories, experience, and a love for the region. “My father had a smallgoods factory back in Granville in

New South Wales. He was an Aussie but the staff he employed – most of them were European,” Jeff recalled. “He had one particularly talented guy from Hungary – he made beautiful food but would only use the best of ingredients. But maybe the best was a Czechoslovakian bloke who would turn the cheapest cuts into the most amazing products.” “I was amazed by the beautiful food. I grew up on devon and tomato sauce

and disused grounds were cleared and tidied. The dream began to turn to reality, albeit much busier than imagined. “It took over our lives straight away – in the first week you get a lot of people wanting to check it out,” Jeff said. After the first week sales died down, but soon word got around about the quality of the products, and the couple were again swamped with the workload. sandwiches, where as when I started working there with my father – I left school one day and started working the next day – I was introduced to kransky, pastrami and a huge variety of these amazing European foods.” Jeff worked for years in the meat industry, eventually moving to Melbourne where he met Wendy. The couple went on camping adventures to Big River, and it was an eye-opener for Jeff. “I’d never been camping. I’m a real city slicker from Sydney. I loved the area and loved the camping. Wendy’s brother had a holiday house in Buxton and one year the family gathered at Thornton Caravan Park for her mother’s birthday. Jeff and Wendy decided this was where they wanted

to be, and started to think about how they could make ends meet. “This shop was empty at the time. We thought (opening a business) would be like semi retirement – only open three days a week and enjoying a quiet change in the country,” Jeff said.

Now the business enjoys fame locally and around the state, and Jeff and Wendy have employed an additional two full time and two casual workers to cope with demand. Though most of Wendy’s time is taken up with a growing pile of bookwork, she still finds the energy to

make stocks of preserves and jams with blueberries, raspberries and other fruits sourced from the backyard of their Snobs Creek property, where they grow freely and organically. Jeff puts the success of the business down to keeping things simple and authentic, and being passionate about the products. “Your best advertising is when people take your food to a barbecue or something, and everyone can see and appreciate it. For example, I always stress you have to make sure meat looks good on both sides, so when you flip it over on the barbecue, it still looks impressive,” he said. “I like food myself, and I’m fussy. I knew we had something to offer. It’s about being consistent and taking pride in your work.”

The couple bought the shop, then without a smokehouse, from local identity, the late Reg Harris. “He had this place and the Golden Trout (Hotel). I think he owned most of the shops in Eildon at one stage. Other people had offered him money for this space, but he said Thornton should have a butcher shop, and would only sell it for that.” The hand-built, no-frills smokehouse was then added, and the overgrown

OPEN GARDENS IN THE MURRINDINDI SHIRE

Yea & District

THE Yea and District Open Gardens will be held on the weekend of Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November from 9am to 5pm each day, with an exciting choice of ten gardens, nine of which are open for the first time. As usual everyone’s roses are at the peak of their first flush and form a stunning backdrop to the magnificent display of perennials and other plants at their best at this time of the year. Several of the gardens have specialist collections which will delight many. The Yea Open Gardens weekend features ten town and country gardens, both large and small, with a great diversity of styles and features. The three town gardens provide an excellent mix of contrasts in style and beauty; from a small courtyard crammed with delights to a very modern garden styled to complement the owner’s new home perfectly and a large rambling garden on the edge of town where they have the space to indulge in beautiful trees, large shrubs and meandering garden beds. The use of rock paving and walling here is a tribute to their artistic ability. The country gardens form an easy round trip out of town, taking either the Whittlesea Road or Melba Highway and connecting the two through Break O’Day Road. Once again the contrasts in styles are a feature of this year’s open gardens. The stunning “Glenburn Station” garden is open to the public for only the second time in ten years. Designed and planted by renowned Melbourne nurseryman, Barry Teece, as a retirement project, it incorporates

The beautiful and colourful garden at “Junction Hill” owned by Bob and Barbara Glenister. formal axes framing beautiful surrounding views, lots of formal hedging, pools and statues making it a sophisticated modern garden, yet incorporating all the style of a grand heritage garden. This garden was damaged in the 2009 Black Saturday fires but the new owner has restored and enhanced the garden and it is a ‘must visit’. The other country gardens are equally as stunning but all with completely different styles. You will see magnificent borders, landscaped terraces, meandering walks down to reflecting ponds, and many clever and beautiful features including pergolas, post and rail fences and rock work; in many the surrounding views

are equally as magnificent as the garden. The variety of styles and plants among all ten gardens open this year is perhaps one of the biggest features of the open gardens weekend and there will be something to suit all tastes Tickets are $5 per garden or concession $30 for all ten gardens and tickets and printed program guides are available at each garden gate or the Yea Information Centre. Maps and all information will be available from mid August on www. yearotary.org.au. Alexandra & District Once again the awardwinning Alexandra and District Open Gardens weekend offers visitors the

chance to experience some of the regions finest town and farm gardens. Up to 12 garden owners will throw open their gates to warmly welcome visitors on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th October. The selection list provides a mix of newly-listed gardens as well as some old favourites. This year’s open gardens are located in Narbethong, Buxton, Acheron, Eildon, Thornton and Alexandra township. Opening for the first time, set in the foothills of the beautiful Yarra Ranges, are the gardens at White Lotus Day Spa and Retreat, originally the Old Post Office of Narbethong. The cottage facade is flanked Murrindindi Guide – Spring 2014 – 29

The old post office room has been converted into a gift shop. The back garden has been given an oriental touch with Buddha statues while across the lawn area is the calming ‘fern glade rotunda’ and softly mulched pathways. The ‘treehouse’ accommodation cottage and day spa rooms sit comfortably in this setting and are connected by wooden decks and bridged walkways.

An intriguing meditation tepee is located amidst layers of leafy green foliage, box hedge and various citrus trees. MARYSVILLE COMMUNITY GOLF & BOWLS CLUB

By Anthony Mitrow

fabulous,” Ken said.

THE Marysville Community Golf and Bowls Club, a focal point for the community during the 2009 bushfires, has been reborn.

“During the fires this building was the only thing standing on the golf course. Everything else was wrecked. So much of Marysville was destroyed.

Sliding open it’s new doors in July, the club has been completely rebuilt and fitted out with all the mod-cons, and according to club president Ken Whittingham, it will continue to be a major icon for Marysville into the future. “It’s been a fun time, there’s been some heartbreaks, a few hard-to-make decisions, but the way it’s turned out is

“It was pretty much a social point and meeting place (for the community) around that time. Sadly a lot of the memorial services were held here. “The shell that you see here is original apart from the main function room, which was gutted, burnt down to the floor and totally rebuilt.” The new building is a

modern and impressive facility featuring a new bar, restaurant and pro shop.

doors will be open. We’ll have tables and chairs out there on the deck.

Ken said perhaps the greatest achievement had been creating a venue that would be accessible and welcoming.

“Before you could only get a drink on certain days at certain hours. That’s going to change with our new restaurant opening up in August. All the time the restaurant is open, the bar will be open, which is not a thing we’ve had before.

“Before, the community or visitors would pop their head in the entrance and didn’t feel like we were open and they’d be welcome. When you did come in it was just a little room with a little bar tucked away in the corner. It wasn’t very inviting,” he said. “Now when we are operating, these sliding

“The bar area here has turned out beyond expectation. When we had the public opening, there was a big crowd in here and it still felt quite spacious – I was amazed. “The new front room

is absolutely magnificent. We’ve got a six-metre deck overlooking the eighteenth green and the tenth tee. Basically the whole vista is wonderful,” Ken said. “We want to be more visible and more welcoming, and you don’t have to play golf, you don’t have to play bowls. Even if visitors just want to sit and have a coffee and a cake while they look out at the beautiful vistas they can do that. If you want to come in for lunch or dinner, or just a drink, we’re here.” Improved street signage will soon highlight the club’s presence to passers-by, as well as promote the club’s new restaurant, The Bunker, which can seat about 120 people. The Bunker is one of the most exciting aspects according to Ken, with local identity Russell Cohen coming on-board to drive the enterprise. “The chef we’ve now got is quite well-known and much loved in this area. People are happy he’s come on-board.” For those who are looking to play though, Marysville is sure to please with a spectacular 18-hole golf course set in a natural amphitheatre surrounded by picturesque hills and designed to embrace the countryside and the Steavenson River which meanders through it. With long scenic fairways to challenge the longest driver, elevated tees and interesting par three holes, there’s something for every level of golfer to enjoy. The bowls green, which Ken says is sadly underused, features a pristine all-weather synthetic surface and is available seven days a week with group bookings and barefoot bowls encouraged. When construction started in November 2013, the club operated out of two port-a-cabins set in the car park, and had just a single social member. Since the official opening in July, dozens of social members have signed up, and the growth looks likely to continue, with many planned improvements and events in the pipeline. “But it takes time. We’ve got to establish ourselves on the map. We’re redoing the practice green and the tenth tee,” Ken said. “The flagpole went in just last week – kindly donated by the Lions Club of Marysville, with the flag donated by life

Eildon fishing report

By Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle IT’S that time of the year again when the rivers in the local area close, but the lake and the pondage are still open. With recent stockings, the pondage is doing quite well; we’ve had nearly 2400 rainbows and browns released into the pondage. 2000 were around the 160gm mark and 400 ex-brood stock were from 1.5kg up, with more scheduled for release in August. Needless to say power bait and dough have been the best baits, mix up the tassie devils and king cobra lures. A 6lb rainbow was taken on the crab pattern croc down Riverside Drive, 3 and 4lb browns were taken on power bait on Bourke Street and 23 of the 160gm were caught near the bridge. Allin-all quite a bit of action this winter in the pondage.

river bed this year that I have heard about. The lake is still trolling well for trout using flat line Tassies, Spotted Dog Rapalas, the Dorado lures, and stump jumpers. Recently I had a report of a 110cm cod being caught on a purple predateck lure right on dusk; however the cod and the yellow belly have been a little quiet this side of the lake. The holographic Tassie devil has done well near the mouth of Big River for brown trout to 43cm. The general rule of thumb has been dark lures on cloudy and overcast days, reverting back to lighter colored lures when the weather clears up. The lake is at present around 2 per cent higher than it was at this time last year, so it’s worth having a look around the runoffs as well, with the lake heading in the right direction it should be another good year for the natives. Goulburn Fishing Festival

Works have been completed on the lower pondage gates and the inlet tunnel from the lake so the pondage is now hovering between the 50 and 60 per cent on a regular basis.

Come and celebrate trout opening at the third annual Goulburn Fishing Festival on Friday night 5th September and Saturday 6th September in the Eildon Community Centre.

So there is no intention of lowering the pondage to the

EILDON BIG FISH CHALLENGE, EILDON PONDAGE

THE waters of the Eildon Pondage, adjacent to the Eildon township, will once again be home to the Eildon Big Fish Challenge and Food and Wine Festival on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th October.

The challenge will feature a competition to land the biggest fish with sections devoted to male, female and junior entries and a prize for the biggest fish caught in each section. A Champion of Champions Perpetual Trophy is up for grabs for the overall longest lengths of fish caught, limited to five per day, and awarded in the adult, junior and family sections. Sponsored and organised by the local Alexandra Events committee, spokesperson Andrew Embling says the Eildon Pondage is one of the signature destinations of the Murrindindi Shire. The waters are regularly stocked with large fish from the nearby Snobs Creek facility and there are always reports of the big ones being landed. “The annual Eildon Pondage festival will bring a lot of visitors and anglers to Eildon and the surrounding towns. “We anticipate many people will make a weekend of it by staying or camping locally to take in our district and its features.” “Alexandra Events has been fortunate to get the community and local community groups behind us so we’re confident of offering something for everyone, from experienced anglers to families and younger people who just want to learn what fishing and the great outdoors are all about,” Andrew said. Each fishing competition entry and every fish caught gives you a chance in the motorboat major draw, first prize being a Savage boat, Mercury outboard and trailer supplied by Eildon Outboard Service. There is also a major raffle with first prize being a ‘tinny full of tinnies”, – a Savage boat, Mercury outboard and trailer, full of cans. Second prize is a kayak and third prize a water snake with electric motor. Both the major draw and raffle will be drawn on the Sunday at 2pm. Harry Hookey and band will perform on Saturday night from 5pm and a casting competition with great prizes and major give-aways will be held in front of the main stage on the hour. The bar will be open, there will be food, coffee and children’s amusements and to finish off the evening a fireworks display. Come and check out the trade displays, market and produce stalls on both days. Fishing hours over the weekend are: Saturday 7am to 4pm and Sunday 7am to noon, see www. eildonbigfishchallenge.com for updates. Enquiries about any aspect of this event including trade sponsorships or in kind support can be directed to Andrew Embling at Alexandra Events on 0418 266 038. Murrindindi Guide – Spring 2014 – 47

UGFM has worked as part of the Murrindindi Shire emergency plan since 2001, and for many years with the emergency services commissioner to recognize the ability local community radio has in emergency broadcasting. On 23rd April 2010 UGFM - Radio Murrindindi became the first community radio station in Australia to become an official State Emergency Broadcaster (their outstanding broadcasting helping save many lives during the 2009 bushfires in Victoria contributed to this achievement. Pictured are (then) Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Victorian Premier John Brumby live on UGFM with Peter Weeks at the re-opening of Marysville SES LHQ on 4th July 2010. With ongoing assistance from Mountain Monthly, UGFM have now incorporated the existing Kinglake Ranges Radio studio and transmitter as part of the overall Murrindindi shire-wide network that the UGFM team of volunteers provide seven days a week. Kinglake Ranges Radio presenters will soon have their programs broadcast across a much wider area through UGFM’s various transmitters located around the shire. UGFM, a community radio broadcaster for 20 years,

and a designated State Emergency Broadcaster, has studios in Alexandra, Marysville and Yea and the welcome addition of the Kinglake Ranges studio will enable better access for the community and presenters to provide a broader diversity of programs, local news and information. UGFM also has a close relationship with Radio Mansfield MCRFM, where programs are shared by each station at various times. Programs originating at Kinglake will not just be heard on UGFM but some will also be heard in the Mansfield Shire as well. Radio Mansfield is also a designated State Emergency Broadcaster.

UGFM also streams on-line at www.ugfm.org so existing programs that were heard on-line via the Kinglake Ranges Radio website will be available on the UGFM website. A priority for UGFM will be to gain funding to establish a backup power generator for the Kinglake Ranges 94.5 FM transmitter to ensure operations during emergencies. If you would like to become involved with your local station please call us on 03 5772 2722 or email info@ ugfm.org. If your club or notfor-profit community group has news or activities coming up that you want to promote please email the community diary at news@ugfm.org.

Wooden it be lovely . . .

Len Sund skillfully transforms a piece of blackwood into a pen at his home in Marysville. Inset: Some of the items Len crafts out of wood.

Keeping a family tradition alive By Tammy Lovett LEN Sund has been working with timber longer than he can remember. In 1948 at the age of 15, Len moved to Marysville with his family. The Sunds quickly carved their name into Marysville’s history books, starting a timber mill that was in operation for almost four decades. For Len, the days of timber milling are long gone but the tradition his family started is something he continues, albeit on a smaller scale. At the bottom of his garden, tucked out of sight, is Len’s workshop. It’s littered with pieces of wood of all shapes and sizes.

One could be forgiven for thinking some of the pieces are destined for the wood heater, but Len sees things a little differently. Picking up a 10cm long piece of blackwood, and slotting it into the lathe, Len begins to turn the block he will fashion into a pen. Len makes a range of items, from eggcups and bowls to jewellery boxes, coffee tables and outdoor furniture. His designs are often intricate and show off the natural character and grain of the wood. “I try to make things that are useful,” Len said. “There is no set pattern to it, I make it off the top of my head. “I just create whatever I think the piece of wood will make.” Part of the charm and

character seen in Len’s work comes from his use of local timber, which often has a story of its own. Many of Len’s creations are made from trees removed from Marysville after the 2009 fires swept the area. He also uses blackwood sourced from a property he and wife Pat lived on in Granton over three decades ago. The land was cleared but Len says he left tiny blackwood shoots to grow. The Sunds moved back into Marysville 25 years ago and remained friends with the current owner who has since given Len some of the blackwood from the property. “It’s ironic, the shoots I saved 30 years ago; I’m using now,” he said. Len is 82 years old. Despite his many years of wood crafting, Len says he’s still

learning. “The next thing you make is always better,” he said. It might only be a hobby, but Len has no plans of slowing down. You can see some of Len’s work on sale at the Marysville market on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. For custom pieces you can contact Len on 5963 3629.

Show time . . .

100 YEARS OF YEA SHOW

JOIN in the centenary celebrations for the Yea Show on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd November. Commencing at 6.30pm in the main arena on the Friday night will be the Heifer Challenge, with great prizes for the winners, and Carnival Showtime has the Showmen’s Guild sideshow alley rides, fire eating and twirling, and music from the band Stoked, and the night will end with an exciting fireworks display. Activities on the Saturday will feature The North Central Beef Expo’s Great Euro Beef Challenge as well as British breed classes, also with great prizes to be won. The poultry section is expected be better than ever this year and check out the new exhibition of dairy goats. An expanded fleece section should encourage an enthusiastic response from woolgrowers in the district. The horses will be in the arena from 9am, to be followed by the Grand Parade at 2.30pm which will be led by Yea Highland Pipe Band and life members in horse-drawn vehicles. The pavilion will provide a display of excellence in cookery, arts and craft, photography, and a historical exhibition of memorabilia mounted by the Yea Historical Society. Anyone who has memorabilia to loan please contact secretary Roma Guerin on 0499 043 617. A huge increase in entries is expected in the horticultural section this year, not least because the Rose Society of Victoria has granted the Yea Show the Victorian Spring Country Championship to award to the grower of six distinct hybrid tea roses. This award is granted to just one Show per year. Also this year a special centenary medal has been struck, to be awarded to all major prizewinners. For the children there are the CWA competitions, a pet show, as well as many pavilion classes, and the opportunity to ride their decorated bikes in the grand parade (with parents’ permission of course). Other attractions include the Yea Skipping Team, animal nursery, working sheep dogs demonstration, an alpaca shearing demonstration, a wandering clown on stilts, and the ever-popular Lights On Convoy Ute competition.

Love thy bees . . .

A bee about to return home with full pollen baskets on her hind legs.

Being kept by the bees By Emily Friedel MANY a beekeeper has spoken of how they have “fallen in love” with honeybees. The suggestion of such a close, intimate and emotional connection to an invertebrate seems absurd to most, and while I have always been fascinated by bees, I was taken completely by surprise when I too fell under the spell of our very first hive almost two years ago. I have often wondered at the title of bee “keeper” when I have dropped everything to deal with a bee related emergency, found myself rescuing bees from spider webs, or sat mesmerised simply watching their comings and goings at the hive entrance for hours. Who is keeping whom?

Rohan built our first Warre hive using a design slightly modified by Tim Malfroy of Malfroy’s Gold for use in Australia.

For the most part, it seems those of us who have fallen for the bees are being kept by them and are destined to be at their beck and call. Rohan and I have certainly found ourselves striving to make our bees as happy as possible.

This has led to us adopting low intervention, hive management methods (opening the hive and disturbing the bees as little as possible), not using synthetic chemicals or feeding with sugar, only harvesting honey when it can be spared rather than when we want it, and doing our best to provide a home that would closely mimic what they might choose for themselves in nature. A honeybee colony’s survival in the wild is largely dependent on its choice of home. If you’ve ever seen a swarm of bees clustered on a tree branch you have been lucky enough to witness a new colony on its way to find a suitable residence. What happens while the swarm is hanging from a branch, in this homeless state, is quite astonishing: they conduct a democratic debate amongst the members of the swarm through various behaviours to choose their new home. Much is taken into consideration by the bees when house hunting, not Murrindindi Guide – Spring 2014 – 53

Beautiful natural comb made from scratch by the bees - no premade sheets of foundation here. unlike ourselves. Elements such as cavity size, safety, aspect, height from the ground, weatherproofing, are all taken into consideration. Many potential homes may be considered, and the choice made inevitably determines the new colony’s fate. When selecting a hive design to use in our own modest apiary, we too went through a similar process to what the bees themselves would do to find their new home: weighed up all the available options and opted for the one that best suited the bees needs, while still being practical to use and complying with Australian laws. In the end we chose “The People’s Hive”, which was the culmination of decades of work and experimentation with over 350 hive designs by Abbe Emile Warre, a French priest turned beekeeper. The design was first published in Warre’s book, “Beekeeping For All” in 1948. Little known in Australia as a hive design until recently, The People’s Hive (or Warre Hive as it is now generally known) is becoming quite popular amongst backyard

beekeepers and those who wish to keep their bees in what can be considered a more “natural” state; one that is of benefit to the bees and not just the beekeeper. The Warre Hive has a cavity diameter very similar to that preferred by bees in the wild and is designed so that the bees are given empty space below, rather than above as with most conventional hives, to build new comb. In the wild, bees build comb down into a hollow cavity, so that the brood nest moves down over time and honey is stored above. Mimicking this natural process in the hive better enables them to regulate the temperature of their brood and means the comb used for brood is constantly renewed as honey is harvested from the top, assisting with the rearing of healthy young amongst many other benefits. So far, our bees have thrived in their Warre homes and as relatively new beekeepers we have found the Warre Hive easy to work with. The low intervention beekeeping the hive is designed for makes for more content, easier to handle honeybees. It is certainly something we would recommend for

The Warre hive populated with happy honeybees. the hobbyist beekeeper who wishes to provide their little friends with exceptionally comfortable accommodation. As Sir David Attenborough said: “If we and the rest of the backboned animals were to disappear overnight, the rest of the world would get on pretty well. But if they [the insects] were to disappear, the land’s ecosystems would collapse.” So perhaps

being kept by the bees is a better reflection of the natural order of the world – our survival is dependent on those wonderful little creatures and they deserve the utmost respect. We consider it an honour to be at their service. More information on natural beekeeping and the Warre Hive and its use in Australia can be found at www. naturalbeekeeping.com.au. Bush tucker plants . . . Midgen berry –

Austromyrtus dulcis

By Angus Stewart THE midgen berry is arguably the sweetest of the Australian bush fruits and is well worth growing for that reason alone. It also has a host of other desirable traits including beautiful bronze coloured new growth, a low growing mounding growth habit, the ability to be pruned into whatever shape is desired, lovely sprays of starry white flowers that are followed by attractive cream-coloured fruits dotted with interesting purple spots. The midgen berry comes from the north coast of NSW and south east Queensland but adapts well to gardens in southern states of Australia provided it does not get severe frosts. Growing it in a protected spot will also minimise the risk of frost damage as well as covering the plant during the first year of establishment in cooler climates. Whilst the fruits are small there are lots of them and they can be picked and eaten straight from the plant and are very popular with children for this reason. The berries are produced from spring to autumn in waves and keeping the plant from drying out will aid in keeping it fruiting. Give it a reasonably well drained position with sun for at least half the day, for maximum cropping. Austromyrtus dulcis is not the only member of this genus with

tasty fruits as the species A. tenuifolia also is worth growing for this reason. It is more upright and grows somewhat taller than its cousin. Austromyrtus ‘Copper Tops’ is reputedly a hybrid between the two species and has narrower foliage than A. dulcis but the taller, more upright habit of A. tenuifolia and it also has bountiful crops of berries. Pictured from left are, Jerry Kellock, Ellen Farkahasy, Joan Semmens, Mavis Germon, Gillian Steward, Graham Page and Eddie Splitberger. By Bob Tate THE Upper Goulburn Field Naturalists Club is a small club open to anyone interested in any aspect of nature and the outdoors. We have members from Alexandra, Eildon, Marysville and districts who may or may not have specialised interests, but by going on outings and attending meetings we all learn from each other. You do not have to be good

at any subject, just have an interest in the outdoors and nature. Our meetings are held monthly on the third Tuesday of most months, and there is an outing on the Friday following that Tuesday. Some of the places we visited recently include the Murrindindi Scenic Reserve – the Cascades, waterfalls and boardwalks. Most visits are within the shire but may extend to Mansfield, Euroa and Seymour bushlands.

Recently we hosted a combined camp at Marysville for all the field naturalists clubs of south eastern Australia with around 80 people attending. There were guest speakers on three nights and multiple walks arranged each day, all with expert speakers or leaders on the walks. This event was held at Outdoor Education Centre’s Camp Marysville. If interested in attending any of our events, either as

a visitor or resident, please contact Lorraine Pyke on 5772 1189. One of the species of birds we regularly see on our outings is the yellow faced honeyeater. migrate to warmer climates, returning in smaller groups during August and October. The bird is a plain brown-grey colour, some 16 to 18cms long, with a prominent yellow and black streak below the eye stretching from the beak to the ear region. Its call is varied but the most common is a loud raucous chick-up chick-up. They may be found from far north Queensland down the east coast and around to the Mt Lofty ranges in South Australia. The nest they build, like many honeyeaters, is a flimsy structure hung between a couple of thin branches at heights ranging from 1m to 6m above the ground. The bird may be seen hawking for insects around trees or near the ground, as well as feeding on the nectar of flowers. The beak and tongue are very long and the tongue is brush tipped for gathering nectar from flowers. When feeding,

The yellow faced honeyeater. pollen from the flowers falls on to the bird’s head and this is then transferred to the next flower, hence fertilizing the flowers as it feeds. So it should be appreciated that birds play a very important part in the fertilization of

plants and thus in the ecology of the bush. The yellow faced honeyeaters arrive in the district in the spring and their raucous calls may be heard regularly in our gardens.

Ada . . .

THE Australian Deer Association (ADA) is a national hunting and deer management organisation established in 1969 to be advocates for our wild deer herds and ethical deer hunting. ADA promotes safe, responsible and ethical hunting and has an established presence and members in every Australian state and territory. ADA’s members are dedicated to the retention of habitat for deer and other wildlife, the preservation and extension of access to public land for hunting and recreation, the sustainable management of deer as a resource and the management of deer hunting to perpetuity. The Upper Goulburn Branch With the Murrindindi and

UPPER GOULBURN BRANCH

surrounding region being in the heart of Sambar deer habitat, passionate locals Roger Wootten and Bob Carey rallied like minded hunters and existing local ADA members, and formed a sub branch of the ADA in February 2011. In June 2013 with the branch continuing to see strong support and meeting all ADA requirements, Upper Goulburn became a full branch of the ADA. Our local branch has grown over the last four years to 130 members and the group is highly active, offering members and their families opportunities through socially focused events. Branch hunts throughout the Victorian High Country are fantastic opportunities for those wanting to see some new country or who are new to deer hunting and the High Country

itself. These gatherings provide the opportunity to share a campfire with other members who are willing to encourage and help those in attendance. Through a strong relationship with the East Central District Rifle Association (ECDRA), the local groups combine to hold two rifle range days that combine both hunting and target disciplines, the 100 metre Sambar silhouette, 240 metre Sambar silhouette and 500 to 600 metre bench rest. It’s an opportunity where experienced target rifle shooters offer their expertise in accurate shooting and the chance to get your hunting rifle as accurate as possible, and see how it performs at differing ranges. A venison lunch is provided and awards are handed out on the days, along with the perpetual individual and branch trophies.

Bi-monthly branch meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month starting at 7pm from February to December at the Alexandra Bowing Club. Each meeting has a different theme with educational opportunities or enlightening guest speakers. A light dinner, normally based on game, is provided free and all we ask is that you support our raffle on the evening, with up to $400 worth of prizes on offer each time, thanks to our sponsors Mansfield Hunting, Fishing and Outdoor Supplies, Wild Deer, Dragon Diesel, RPT Plastering and Alexandra Weed Control. You don’t need to be a member to attend branch events; come along and bring your family to see if it’s for you. taking on the challenging yet scenic roads around the region. The event consists of 22 competitive stages on closed roads covering over 280km, and encompasses a variety of competitions including Modern, Showroom, and Classic where winners are decided using a penalty/base time system for each stage, along with other competitions such as the newer categories of TSD Trophy (based on optimum time adherence), and the Thoroughbred and Sports Trophy (limited to a maximum speed of 130km/hr). Whilst there is understandably a focus on the overall fastest car, for most competitors the event is about the camaraderie, showcasing their car and getting to the finish line. Being the state’s premier mountain resort, Mt Buller provides a brilliant base for the rally with the road up the mountain being a highlight for all competitors including being the final ascending stage to the finish celebration and presentation on the Sunday. Along with the Mansfield Street Stage, there will be a number of great spectator points for the public to see the cars in action throughout the event. The lunch breaks each day will also provide the opportunity to view the cars on display, including the scenic Eildon lakeside stop on Sunday before they begin the final stages to head up to the summit of Mt Buller. Targa High Country is the sister event to the world famous Targa Tasmania which took its name from the “Targa Florio” event. Targa Florio originated in Sicily in 1905 and involved

THE GREAT TARMAC RALLY

THE Great Tarmac Rally, run by Mountain Motorsports, returns to the Murrindindi Shire once again this year featuring two main legs over an action packed two days of tarmac rallying. Saturday 4th October sees drivers tackle the greatest of roads between Marysville and Cumberland Junction and down to Reefton and back. Drivers and navigators will attack seven stages on the Saturday with the roads opening between runs for traffic to get through and for spectator access, with teams servicing their vehicles adjacent to the Marysville Caravan Park and at the Reefton Hotel at the other end. “We are very excited to be back in the Murrindindi area. Marysville is a favourite place for many of the drivers, navigators and officials since having run the Lake Mountain Sprint in 2006 and more recently The Great Tarmac Rally in past years,” Clerk of Course Martin Doxey said. On Sunday 5th October The Big River Stage blasts into action on the Eildon-Jamieson Road. Broken up into six stages including two full length runs and featuring the Big River

Finale the stage starts at the edge of Lake Eildon National Park with the turnaround point being just before the bridge at the Lions Club Camp. The road will open in between runs for public and spectator access. Spectators need to report to the Stage Commander at each end for prime viewing locations on each stage. In 2014 Mountain Motorsports looks strong to build its numbers after a positive internal review with the promoter, navigators and competitors on the Australian Tarmac Rally Championship. The Mt Baw Baw Sprint was an outstanding success for competitors, teams and officials featuring 36 cars which included high performance Audis, Subaru WRX’s, Mitsubishi Evo 9 and 10s, Ford Escorts, Ford Capris and Ford XR5’s. Mountain Motorsports will run three revamped rounds of the Australian Tarmac Rally Championship in 2014 and The Great Tarmac Rally will feature as round two. “The area and the local support will hopefully see the return of the Lake Mountain Sprint in January 2015 to help complement the Great Tarmac Rally again held in October 2015 and will see the Australian Tarmac Rally Championship return to four rounds,” Doxey said. For those interested in getting up close to all the tarmac rally action officials are required for road closures on the Sunday with Volunteer Team RACESOLUTIONS Motorsport, who coordinate the event for Mountain Motorsports. This is one of the more challenging events for RACESOLUTIONS Motorsport who set up and cover the event and the task is set to make it even better than round one at Mt Baw Baw. If you would like to be part of the Volunteer Officiating Team please contact Martin Doxey at martin.doxey@ racesolutionsmotorsport.com. For event information and road closure times please visit www.mountainmotorsports.com.au or Peter Washington at peter@mountainmotorsports.com.au.
