Traditional treats . . . Scrumptious handmade hazelnut florentines are left to set after being hand-dipped in dark chocolate.

A business built on crumbs By Tammy Lovett

KERRIE LIVINGSTONE has a secret and it’s one she won’t be sharing anytime soon. An artisan chef, Kerrie has been hand-making gourmet biscuits for as long as she can remember and while her recipes are closely guarded, her scrumptious biscuits are not. In 2008 the Buxton-based chef realised a lifelong dream when she, daughter Tammie and son-inlaw Michael Tesseyman first opened the doors of their biscuit business, Crumbs Gourmet Biscuits. The family began operating in Marysville until the 2009 Black Saturday fires destroyed the premises, but luckily Kerrie’s handwritten recipe book, her life’s work of 35 years was spared in the blaze. “There were recipes in it from when I was an apprentice,” Kerrie said. “Fortunately it was in the cool room.” Unable to find another location for her

business in Marysville, Kerrie moved the Crummary to Healesville. “We wanted to get back to Marysville, to support Marysville, but it wasn’t happening.” For years Kerrie’s biscuits were something she would make for family and friends at Christmas, a special handmade gift prepared with care and love. Today, Kerrie makes her signature biscuits on a much larger scale, but her food philosophy hasn’t changed. From her white chocolate and macadamia nut florentines, buttery shortbread, custard yoyos filled with passionfruit and raspberry and all the others in between, Kerrie ensures each biscuit is lovingly handmade with quality ingredients and baked using traditional techniques. “It’s a step back in time with a handmade, traditional product,” Kerrie said. “I like the idea of flavours you can taste.” “Each biscuit contains no more than six main ingredients and is naturally preserved with butter and sugar.”

Kerrie’s creations come from carefully honed recipes, some she has been using since her childhood. “It’s a real trial and error,” Kerrie said. “I change the recipes to how I like them.” It was probably this desire to create things her own way, using her own techniques that frustrated her teachers when she was younger. “At school I was told not to take cookery again after the first year,” Kerrie said. “I think I even failed.” But that hasn’t stopped her. Kerrie’s love for food is obvious, she has been cooking professionally for almost 40 years and has no intention of slowing down now. “I’ve got the passion,” she said. “It’s nice to the able to share it with the world.” Having come so close to losing her precious recipes in 2009 Kerrie is now turning her attention to producing a cookbook and plans to explore a savoury range of products to complement her line of biscuits.

Kerrie’s Hazelnut florentines are hand-dipped in dark chocolate. Kerrie also hopes to realise another lifelong ambition of teaching children how to cook with the possibility of hosting children’s parties and workshops. “My grandkids love to cook,” she said. “They come and visit before their birthday so they can cook for their parties.” “We get in an awful mess but

the kids love it,” she said. To pick up some of Kerrie’s delicious biscuits or for a free tasting, you can visit the Crummary, Shop 2/281 Maroondah Hwy, Healesville. Kerrie’s gourmet products are also for sale at Made in Marysville, Buxton Ridge Winery and the Grant Street Grocer in Alexandra. For information visit www. crumbsgourmet.com.au. Marysville jazz and blues weekend by Peter Guest TO CELEBRATE Marysville’s return as a major destination for nature and cultural enthusiasts, following the devastation of the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009, the inaugural Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend will be held in Marysville and surrounding areas from Friday 16th October until Sunday 18th October. Turning on the Lights in Marysville During this exciting weekend Marysville will come alive to the sounds of some of the best jazz and blues artists from around Victoria. Over 30 acts will be appearing on the program and one of the many highlights will be a spectacular concert, “Turn On the Lights”, in the Stadium of the Marysville Community Centre in Falls Road on the Saturday night.

Throughout the weekend, various nooks and crannies around Marysville and the local area, as well as many cafes, pubs, parks and gardens, will provide visitors to the township with opportunities to hear great live music from large swing bands down to solo guitarists playing under a shady tree in the main street. A range of the region’s best wines and food will be available for tasting or purchase as visitors soak up the refreshing and invigorating air from the nearby mountains. The weekend opens on the Friday night with a performance by Wilbur Wilde and his band in the distinctive Crossways Historic Inn in Murchison Street. Wilbur will be well known to many people for his appearances on Hey Hey It’s Saturday over

many years and his time with the classic band Ol’ 55 alongside Frankie J Holden. Crossways will be a perfect setting for this great show with its unique atmosphere of nostalgia and charm set in the parklands on the Steavenson River close to the heart of Marysville. Throughout the morning and afternoon on Saturday, bands and solo artists will be performing all over Marysville. Ticketed sessions featuring some of the state’s leading jazz and blues acts will be held in the wonderful Lakeview Room, with its picturesque views of the surrounding hills and parkland, at the Marysville Community Centre and at Crossways, while other artists will be playing for free around the township. Jazz parade A highlight during Saturday

will be a traditional New Orleans style jazz parade down Murchison Street at around 12.30pm when, to the beats of traditional jazz, locals and visitors alike will be invited to dress-up and join the parade with brightly decorated parasols in hand. After the parade, visitors will be able to grab a bite to eat at one of the local eateries or sample some of the region’s best wines in the Lions Club of Marysville’s marquee on the banks of the Steavenson River in Settler’s Park. On the Saturday night the Marysville Community Centre Stadium will transform into a concert arena with a night of fun and fabulous music on offer. The night will kick off at 7pm with the Redgaters band from Alexandra, who are a swing style jazz band, playing some great big

One of Melbourne’s premier traditional jazz bands, Shirazz, will then be playing a mixture of trad and Dixieland jazz with some hot solos and driving rhythms. Following Shirazz, award-winning Michael Pollit (aka Mr Black and Blues) will set the arena alive with some great blues. Michael’s albums have won numerous awards here and in the United States. He will be joined on stage by special guest Chris Wilson, one of Australia’s greatest blues players. The final act for the evening will be the famous 1970s band Spectrum, with lead singer Mike Rudd. Many people will remember the 1971 hit single ‘I’ll be Gone (Someday I’ll Have Money)’ and Spectrum will take the audience on a musical journey through the Spectrum, Indelible Murtceps and Ariel albums of the 70s, as well as their special take on the blues, plus recent material from their Breathing Space series of EPs. The fun continues on Sunday with more great acts performing around town and in the Lakeview Room. The Marysville Cultural Community Inc. (a not-for-profit charity organisation) has been instrumental in making this event happen. Details and tickets for the Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend can be found at www. marysvillejazzandblues.com.

Out of the blues at White Lotus in Narbethong on Sunday 18th October THE SOUNDS of an eclectic mix of rhythm and blues will ring out on Sunday 18th October at the White Lotus Performing Arts Centre in Narbethong as part of the inaugural Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend. Gary Soloman is well placed to perform and oversee the program having played with Bo Diddley, the Drifters, and the Blue Angels, to name a few. Included in the program is Australian singer songwriter Geoff Bridgford who started his music career in the mid sixties as a drummer. In London in 1970 Geoff found international success as an integral band member of the Bee Gees performing such hits as ‘How can you Mend a Broken Heart’. Geoff has also toured with Mark Gillespie, Goanna, Ross Hannaford and found time to focus on songwriting. Geoff’s partner and fellow musician Kim O’Leary will also be performing. Kim was born in Melbourne into a family of musicians. In her late teens she travelled to the USA to

further her musical career. Under the management of Stevie Wonder’s attorney she signed a record deal with Motown Records in 1988. Her single ‘Put The Pieces Back’ went into the top 40 in the US charts and from there she secured a publishing deal with Berry Gordy’s company, Jobete Music. This gave her the opportunity to work with some of the best producers and writers in New York. Since then Kim has travelled throughout the USA, Europe and Australia performing as an independent artist. Kim has had multiple artists record her songs, some of which have been included in movies and television in the USA and UK. A host of local musicians will also be performing, including a special ‘Out of the Blues’ performance featuring some of our best local female singers. Out of the Blues promises to be a great family day out and food and drinks will be available on the day. Booking enquiries to Gary Soloman on 5963 7126. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2015 – 17

Showcase and shine . . . THE GOULBURN River Valley is becoming synonymous with great food and wine and with four distinct seasons, the climate is conducive to growing beautiful produce including cold and warm climate wines.

Part of the ethos at Holmesglen at Eildon is their low mileage food philosophy and the menus offer their own farmed Angus beef and produce from the comprehensive kitchen gardens. They are proud to promote local produce and work very closely with many suppliers to ensure that their guests enjoy only the freshest of produce including trout, potatoes, pork and chicken.

demonstrations, wine appreciation sessions, an indigenous bush tucker class and more.

For the lovers of fine food there will be a 6 course degustation dinner on Saturday 26th September showcasing a wide range of local fare. Corey Dewhurst, the Food and Beverage Coordinator, will be on hand to recommend local wines to complement each course.

As a result of these local relationships, Holmesglen is excited to be hosting the first Eildon Epicurean Event on Friday 25th to Sunday 27th September: “It’s time to showcase and shine our region’s produce and wine.”

Recently Le Cordon Bleu (the world’s largest culinary training school) nominated Holmesglen Institute to be the sole provider of their program here in Victoria. Le Cordon Bleu designated training facility is located at the Moorabbin campus, and the coordinator along with some of the students will be joining the Holmesglen team for the Eildon Epicurean Event to meet with our local producers and learn more about their products.

The weekend event will be dedicated to the local food and wine industry, and there will be an abundance of passionate local producers happy to share their stories. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy cooking

With accommodation on site, visitors are welcome to either come for the day or make it a weekend getaway. For more information please contact Holmesglen at Eildon on 03 5774 2631 or eildon@holmesglen.edu.au.

Honeycomb makes an exquisite sweet addition to a cheese platter. produced, homogenised, liquid honey is often sold cheaply on supermarket shelves alongside jam and peanut butter, honeycomb doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Part of the problem is that most people just don’t know what to do with honeycomb, and therefore don’t understand its true value. Any beekeeper or switched-on chef, however, will tell you that it is well worth taking the time to explore and appreciate honeycomb. If your interest in honeycomb has been piqued, here are some tips for getting hold of it and making the most of it: Where to get honeycomb Farmers markets where beekeepers have stalls are usually the easiest places to find honeycomb, and have the advantage of allowing you to connect directly with the producer. Small grocers, health food shops and produce stores often

stock it too, as well as some supermarkets and even the odd pharmacy. If you can’t find any in your local area there is always the option to order online. Of course, if you’re really keen the best place to get honeycomb is from your own backyard hive! Different types of honeycomb As with wine, honeycomb is very much a reflection of the environment it comes from. Temperatures, trainfall, humidity levels, available flowers and bees’ foraging preferences will all influence honeycomb production and no two seasons (or even two hives) are ever exactly the same. Varietal honeycomb is produced when one type of flower is predominant in the foraging radius of the hive (and the bees have sufficient preference for it) and each variety will have a distinctive colour, flavour and viscosity.

For example, yellow box has a golden colour and light, sharply sweet flavour. Red stringybark, on the other hand, has a darker, reddish colour and a deeper flavour with more of a smoky caramel sweetness. Polyfloral honeycomb is made with a mix of different nectars. The mixture of nectars means the flavour is complex and layered and each batch is unique – it’s exciting to eat a food when you know you will probably never taste anything like it again. Honeycomb is not only distinguished by the honey content, but also by the type of comb that houses the honey. Virgin honeycomb contains fresh comb that has only been used for honey storage so the wax is pale and quite delicate. Post-brood honeycomb contains comb that has been used by the bees to raise their young; it’s thicker,

darker and has a stronger flavour than virgin comb. Post-brood honeycomb isn’t usually readily available commercially and it’s most likely to be procured through backyard beekeepers. What to do with honeycomb Honeycomb is wonderfully versatile and its uses are only limited by your imagination. With so many different types available you can have fun delving into different flavours, colours and textures to find one that complements your dish perfectly. Here are some ideas to get you experimenting with honeycomb: • Eat it straight up and enjoy it in its most pure form. You can eat the wax (it’s safe to eat but indigestible so best not to go overboard in terms of volume), or chew on it until the honey is all gone then spit it out. olive oil and white wine vinegar. • Honeycomb goes very well with cheese so you can use it as a sweet addition to a cheese platter (just spread it on top of cheese as you would do with something like fig paste) or maybe try a Brie and honeycomb baguette.

• Sit a chunk of honeycomb atop a stack of pancakes, add a dash of lemon juice if you like. • Top a scone or vanilla cupcake with whipped cream and honeycomb. The above ideas are just the tip of the iceberg and there is much fun to be

had inventing new ways to let honeycomb add a dash of magic to your meals. So the next time you see honeycomb in your local grocer’s or at a farmers market, rather than passing by to grab a jar of familiar liquid honey, pick it up and let your culinary imagination run wild!

LEONE GABRIELLE, HIGHLANDS

Slice of heaven

BORN IN Liverpool, to the south-west of Sydney in NSW, and having previously resided in Queensland, award-winning Leone Gabrielle is now a local Highlands-based artist, who shares her home with son Stohm and their quiet dog Giotto. Giotto, an Italian Greyhound, is named after the Italian painter, generally considered to be the first in a line of great artists who contributed to the Renaissance – just one of the many indications of the strong role art plays in Leone’s life. “As a child, I remember chewing on sticks to make paint brushes, dipping the stick in water, painting, then enjoying watching the image disappear as the water

evaporated.”

Highlands artist Gabrielle with son Stohm on one of their travels.

“By high school I found myself heavily into poster making”, having been influenced by Aubrey Beardsley, the 19th century artist who contributed significantly to the Aesthetic Movement and the development of the Art Nouveau posters. Leone also discovered Marvel comics in her teens, describing herself as “a

voracious visual reader. If you understand what I mean – I read pictures.” Having come from a family without a strong academic background Leone was encouraged to be creative as a child. She was given Texta Permanent Markers, paint by number kits, string for knotting macramé, wool for knitting, and copper for sculpting. “I was a child who loved to make, and through the school years developed my appetite for drawing.” “Later I really got into Shaun Tan, [a contemporary

Australian artist, who has contributed significantly to children’s and young adult’s literature through his writings and illustrations]. Then Nick Howson – his colour is divine. At the moment I’m inspired by Aaron Meeks’ work.” “We are a bit spoilt for visual images today. But I believe it’s not really the image, it’s the energy underneath, in the marks, that feeds the viewer’s soul and speaks with them.” When asked about the translucent forms in her art works, Leone recalls: “A Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2015 – 23

neighbour once cut down a large, sick gum and when I stood at the back step, I saw the vanished tree, full of … cockatoos. I see the time sharing arrangement [we have with the] years past. It’s sort of like playing: What was there before? Maybe it’s me just coming to terms with getting older and having a wider viewpoint in regards to the passage of time.”

– the interaction of people, animals, plants and place.”

Motivated by memories, Leone describes the most influential inspirations for her art works as being “vignettes of my life, colours of place, my dreams, birds, dogs, architecture, light, the sea and stories. As I get older, my appreciation grows for all the time, ideas, and lives that have come beforehand. It is never one person, it is lots of people along the way that make the song of life so rich

Leone’s work has two rather distinctive styles – bright, bold oils and acrylics and mixed media; and her more subtle and subdued life drawing.

“And it is only later in my life I have learnt to value my gift, of course that was after someone found my drawings in the bin! I learnt that they bring joy and meaning to the viewer and that once my work leaves me, it takes on its own life and meaning … being whatever it is the viewer sees.”

“Mixed media is fun”, says Leone. “Pigments are illuminated when embedded in oil – I live for colour. Acrylics are quick drying and suitable for work on location. They also let you

on an airplane with them”, explains Leone, who learned the hard way: “Customs confiscate oils as they are potentially flammable. This is yet to be demonstrated. Unfortunately I lost $200 worth of paint!” Known to journey regularly on both land and sea, Leone explains “I love to travel, I love stories, and I love to paint”. “I will paint on a kitchen table, on top of an ants’ nest, in a studio, whereever it is not too windy, cold or wet.” “I feel inspired just about anywhere, but especially where the soil turns red. I feel at home in the dry country. This year I have met the Gulf, the western side of Cape York, a place that is as vibrant as a flower. The sea is green and the land bauxite red; it

sings to my bones. I was very sad to have to come home.” Art is “in my bones” says Leone. “If I didn’t continue to follow my passion I’d be living a lie. I shall keep being creative – it’s who I am, the juice of my life – making art fills my soul.” Slice of Heaven, a solo exhibition by Leone Gabrielle, features exquisite compositions and varied palettes of oil, acrylic and mixed media. Her work is about stories and adventures in the everyday, and the depth and warmth of Leone’s colours will warm you and take you on your own journey far, far away…‘ The exhibition is showing at Rustic Simplicity @ The Shear ‘N’ shedS, 74 Grant Street in Alexandra until 24th August 2015.

Den in the shack at Toolangi. ARDEN The

ONE HUNDRED years have passed since Clarence Michael James Dennis, (CJ Dennis or Den), poet and journalist wrote The Sentimental Bloke (published in 1915). In 1908 CJ Dennis arrived at a camp in Toolangi. Then in 1915 he built ‘Arden’ on the site of the old shack he had lived in and he lived here until his death in 1938. Den put Toolangi on the map not only with his book Songs of the Sentimental Bloke, but by bringing alive the local characters in his letters and cartoons, Ben Bowyang and Smith of Smiths Gully. In 2008 the first C J Dennis festival was held to commemorate one hundred years of Den’s life in Toolangi. A festival with a poetry competition has since been held each year to encourage poets young and old and to keep alive the name of CJ Dennis. This year the festival celebrates the centenary of The Sentimental

To delight our audience further the Toolangi Ballet School children will be dancing to the theme of “The Satin Bower Bird”, from the book The Singing Garden. Have breakfast with the poets on Sunday morning and remember to bring your fold up chair to follow CJ Dennis and his friends as they explore his Singing Garden in a moving theatre. Morning and afternoon tea plus meals can be purchased at the Tearooms or you can bring your own. So head on down to Toolangi for a wonderful weekend of poetry and music.

Be inspired . . .

Celebrating 25 years of open gardens in Alexandra NOT MANY of us can claim to have created an event that continues successfully after 25 years; Gwenda Martin is such a person. Gwenda and former local resident Alma Hexter founded the Alexandra and District Open Gardens Weekend in 1991, and whilst Alma has left the district, Gwenda has remained an active member of the Open Gardens committee every year. Her knowledge, contribution and experience gained over so many years is highly valued by the committee. In the first year 16 gardens were open,

some planted more than a century ago. The success of that first open garden weekend has evolved into a very popular annual event in the Alexandra district. Since its inception, well over 110 different garden owners have generously shared the beauty of their properties with local residents and visitors. Profits from this event have been contributed to the local community and tallies in excess of $130,000 to date. What a great tribute to the

wonderful foresight and enterprising energy of Alma and Gwenda. This year’s celebration of 25 years of Open Garden Weekends on 24th and 25th October includes more than a dozen remarkable gardens located in Alexandra township and on rural properties in the district. Friendly garden owners from Buxton, Taggerty, Acheron, Alexandra and Yarck will generously throw open their gates to warmly welcome all visitors. Along with some remarkable country properties, there are five town gardens, four of which are opening for the first time: Lynne Phelps, Anne Norris, Marg Creighton and Carole Harrowfield have been working hard during the cold winter months preparing their gardens to look their best in the spring. An ‘old favourite’ garden of Pam and Bryan Jones will also be included. It is many years since visitors were treated to the pleasure of visiting Rosalie and Tony Purcell’s garden near Yarck. Close by at Home Creek, Peter Bartel and Susie

Freeman will also open their extensive and impressive property. Further south at Acheron and Taggerty, there are six striking country properties not to be missed. These include Marian Rennie’s well-known ‘Ariah Park’, Georgie Leckey’s property , Jan and Larry Fallon’s “Neerimvale”, Gil and Ross Thomson’s property, Doug and Lynne Walter’s “Yankalilla” and Liz Gillhoff’s garden in the foothills of the Cathedral. Finally in Buxton the opening of Judy Duffy’s and Margaret Rea’s garden will be welcome news to those who have loved a previous visit there. Expect to see gorgeous spring blossoms and foliage, exotics and natives, stunning views, manicured petite spaces and expansive terrain. Catering options will be available at some of the venues as well as steel pan solo performances, a blacksmith demonstration, beekeeping talks, honey tasting, plant sales, photography, an art gallery and more. So come . . . be inspired! Further details at www.alexandraopen gardens. com.au.

Yea open gardens THIS YEAR, the Rotary Club of Yea is again presenting superlative gardens from the town and surrounding areas. Several new gardens, some young, some of historic importance, and some gardens that have been presented in the past but now with new features will be on display – all worth a visit to this lovely area in the Murrindindi Shire. Scenic drives have been planned to make the garden tour enjoyable, taking in the lovely rolling hills and sweeping views of the area. Late spring is the time when the gardens are reaching their peak, roses and perennials beginning and the late tulips and narcissus still in bloom. Keep the 7th and 8th November free to visit these gardens and to take in other attractions of the Yea area. Further information can be found on the Rotary website: www.yearotary. org.au.

Food for thought . . .

THE TRIANGLE Food Op Shop has been operating out of the Buxton Post Office since late March of 2015, providing locals with donated, fresh, home grown produce at very affordable prices. The shop relies on locals to donate excess fruit, vegetables and eggs from their gardens which is then sold in bags for $1. The Buxton Post Office has kindly donated a free space, shelf and cool room use enabling the project to get started without sourcing additional funding. The Marysville Bakery supports the project by donating day old bread on Wednesdays. The concept was formed as a result of a research project run by Alexandra District Health, Berry Street and Melbourne University along with a small group of local volunteers in order to help alleviate food insecurity within the area.

The Triangle Food Op Shop is one solution identified by the community to help, by providing access to affordable, fresh local produce. Food is sold to all residents – just like a clothing op shop. People who wish to donate can drop off their excess produce at either the Buxton Post Office, Alexandra District Health or Berry Street in Alexandra. If anyone is unable to pick their own produce or get it to a drop off point the Food Op Shop has volunteers who can help with harvesting and collecting. The Triangle Food Op Shop has a facebook page with daily updates of the produce that is available as well as gardening tips and other information. The Triangle Food Op Shop is part of a bigger project which will be launched mid 2016. If funding applications are successful the Taggerty

Community Hub will be established, which will host a second Food Op Shop as well as cooking workshops, a communal garden, rooms to hire for community groups and meetings, a nature playground, playgroups and a community market. As this is a not-for-profit project it is run completely with the help of volunteers. If you would like to volunteer to bag up fruit and vegetables at the shop

in Buxton or would like to join the committee and help with the development of the Taggerty Community Hub please contact Anna Birtchnell on 0423 018 051. If you or your business is interested in financially supporting the project please call Lisa LorimerDerham at Alexandra District Health on 5772 0900. The Triangle Food Op Shop is open from Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm.

Great victorian rail trail . . .

THE trail is Victoria’s longest rail trail and spans 134 kilometres from Tallarook through Yea to Mansfield, with a link between Cathkin and Alexandra. You can explore the rail trail on a bike, on foot or on horseback. The trail meanders through beautiful countryside following the Goulburn River at Tallarook and passes through the Trawool Valley, classified by the National Trust for its scenic beauty. You can take a ride through the historic 200 metres long Cheviot tunnel and you may be lucky enough to arrive at the old Alexandra Station on a day that the Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum operates. Good morning murrindindi . . .

Opening of UGFM Marysville Studio on 17th May 2009 hosted by Jill Singer and Peter Weeks and others (Lance Weeks in middle).

Happy 21st birthday UGFM – Radio Murrindindi FOR MANY it is difficult to appreciate the fact that our own shire wide radio station will have been on air for 21 years by the end of 2015.

UGFM Highly Commended in the 2010 Fire Awareness Awards in Melbourne, from left, Judy Blakeney, Peter Weeks and Peter Rice. Below: Outside broadcast at Rebel Park in Alexandra for the Safe and Caring Community Match with Thornton/ Eildon verses Alexandra; George Nadj, Wayne Miller, Mike Dalmau and time keeper Hughey Kidd.

UGFM–Radio Murrindindi will be celebrating its formation at a function on 2nd October 2015 which will see many current and former radio presenters attending. The station also plans a number of outside broadcasts from towns across the Murrindindi Shire to commemorate the anniversary and other celebrations. UGFM has been very successful since it commenced transmissions on a small scale in November 1994 and owes its success to the many people who have contributed in various ways, particularly the broadcasters and the sponsors who have been an integral part of its continuing success. For many, life would be

very different if they could not regularly listen to local news, sport, events, weather, emergencies, a variety of music and entertainment through UGFM from locations across the shire. This has been achieved by volunteers on a not-forprofit basis and managed through an annually elected committee of management. In the early 1990s frustration at the poor radio reception and no regular local news in our part of Victoria led to investigations by a number of people to see what could be done to improve the situation. Some distant stations had transferred to the FM band from AM and were no longer able to be received in many local areas. Other stations had poor local reception during the day and could not be heard at night. Investigations were completed regarding licences, equipment and Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2015 – 45

formats and it was decided to call a public meeting in Alexandra during November, 1993. This meeting was held to gauge the level of interest in forming a local community radio station and to discuss whether it could be achieved and how. Julia Gillard and John Brumby interviewed on UGFM at the reopening of Marysville SES headquarters in November 2010.

A good attendance voted overwhelmingly to proceed with the establishment of a community radio station. An incorporated body was established, bank accounts opened, members sought, constitutions researched and adopted within the State Government guidelines. Money was scarce, a studio location had to be sourced and equipped, transmitter constructed and much more. After 12 months of work building two studios in the old school house at the then Alexandra High School, UGFM’s first transmission took place on low power from the studios with the aid of borrowed funds and equipment. The licence granted to UGFM allowed it to broadcast 65 hours each weekend from 7am Friday to midnight each Sunday on a frequency of 98.9 FM. Initially around a dozen volunteers needed to be trained as presenters, (these days called broadcasters), using established codes of practice and new station onair procedures. The number of volunteers quickly grew to around 50 broadcasters as the coverage area and listening audience grew. One year later UGFM commissioned a new prime transmitter on Mt Eildon near Skyline Road. A small amount of funding had been obtained from grants which were supplemented by a loan, with personal guarantees from some

committee members and generous support from local sponsors. Two years later in October 1997 UGFM gained a temporary licence to broadcast 7 days a week all year round and later that year, with help from the Alexandra SES, constructed a purpose built transmitter hut and transmission tower. Following community complaints of poor reception in 1991, the Federal Government gave the area a high priority and on 4th October 1998, UGFM was finally granted its permanent community broadcast licence, together with a new frequency of 106.9 FM. UGFM’s original licence application included provision to install ‘fill in’ transmitters near Yea and Marysville, where terrain causes a shadowing effect. In January 2000 the Federal Government (through the then Australian Broadcasting Authority) allocated frequencies to address this problem after five years of submissions and lobbying by UGFM. The station commenced transmissions to test these new frequencies on 1st March, 2000 with final approval for 88.9 FM for Yea and 98.5 FM for Marysville and Lake Mountain areas. With radio reception being a problem in the Flowerdale and Hazeldene area, and after many requests from local residents and Murrindindi Shire, UGFM was granted permission to establish a transmitter for this area – 98.9 FM, our original frequency. New developments at the Alexandra Secondary College in the early 2000s led to the demolition of the building used by UGFM as a

studio. Fortunately the CFA Group and SES had vacated a shire owned building originally built as a supper room for the adjacent hall but used as an emergency headquarters and control facility since the mid 1970s. After being unused for a few years UGFM established a lease with the shire to turn this building into a studio complex. A grant was obtained through the Federal Government by UGFM and the building was extensively renovated and converted to studios. UGFM continues to lease this building from the Murrindindi Shire for its Alexandra studios. UGFM had, for many years, been extensively involved in emergency broadcasting, establishing a formal process with the Murrindindi Shire in 2001, and played a significant role during fires in 2006 and 2007 and the major fires on 7th February 2009. The station was required to give considerable evidence at the Bushfires Royal Commission following the 2009 disaster. With new procedures post the Royal Commission, UGFM became the first accredited community radio station to be approved officially for broadcasting of emergency information within Australia. The station received much positive feedback for its broadcasting during the 2009 fires in helping to save many lives and during the long recovery period. UGFM received the Tony Staley award for Broadcasting Excellence, the national community radio sectors highest award voted for by peers only. Since then UGFM has gone on to help set the government standards for other community stations

to become emergency broadcasters. Hundreds of volunteer broadcasters have been involved since formation; they have come and gone and sadly, a few have passed on. All have thoroughly enjoyed their time at UGFM and have played a huge part in the success of the station. The station has averaged around 40 to 50 presenters at any one period and also shares some programing with Radio Mansfield which has proven beneficial to both communities. Around 150 people in the community continue to show their support for the station each year by being financial members of the station. New studios have also been established at Marysville since the 2009 fires. UGFM has also taken on responsibility for the licence at Kinglake Ranges (94.5 FM) along with the Kinglake studio and is about to bring on line a new studio at the former railway station in Yea.

UGFM broadcaster, Rita Guenzel, with comedian Frank Woodley during a broadcast from Yea.

Having studios located across the shire helps presenters by reducing travel and assists with ensuring local content is maintained which is very important for local radio. Without the ongoing support of local businesses advertising their goods and services through sponsorship on UGFM, along with grants from the Federal Govternment and various other organisations the station could not exist.

UGFM welcomes new broadcasters, will provide training and welcomes new ideas for programs. UGFM is confident that it has a sound future and is looking forward to another 21 years. Happy birthday UGFM!

Meander around murrindindi . . . Neds Peak, Cathedral Range State Park.

Explore the outdoors in Murrindindi this spring . . . MOST OF us already know that spending time outdoors feels good. A walk in the fresh air, a picnic with family and friends, or just some quiet time surrounded by nature seems to invigorate, inspire and calm us. This isn’t just a hunch or a fleeting feeling though – it’s backed up by research from all over the world. Nature really is good for us! Not only do we get the physical benefits of being outside and moving more, we also get psychological benefits – often our mood improves, we are less anxious and stressed, and we feel more connected to others and our world. So given the winter weather is starting to break and getting out in nature will help you feel better in a whole range of ways, the only question that remains is – where to go? Luckily Murrindindi has a 50 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2015

whole range of options, with something to suit everyone. So check out just some of the places you might like to visit this spring. Lake Eildon National Park This time of year is perfect for exploring some of Lake Eildon’s hillier walking tracks and stunning views over the lake before the weather heats up. A great walk is the Estate Spur Track (near the Herb Fitzroy area) which offers a couple of options for walks of different lengths. You climb steeply to the main spur to be rewarded with expansive views before choosing the route to descend depending on how far you’d like to walk. There are several other tracks, many of which connect to give you lots of options depending on how energetic you feel. If the kids prefer a gentle shady

walk along the lake there are plenty of choices and for the more adventurous with time on their hands there are several more strenuous options to head into secluded areas of the park. Yarra Ranges National Park and surrounds With spring water flows this is a great time of year to check out some of the waterfalls and fern walks in the Yarra Ranges. There are several waterfalls near Marysville that are well worth the drive or walk. Steavenson Falls, just out of Marysville, is by far the most well-known, accessible and visited of the falls. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous why not take the steep walk to the top of the falls and enjoy the spectacular views of the full length of the falls. In the past few years the regrowth in the area after the 2009 bushfires has really taken off and the

walking tracks and area around the falls are lush and green with trees. Don’t stop your waterfall wanderings here as the falls within the Yarra Ranges National Park each has a character of its own and offer a more secluded experience. Keppel, Cora Lyn and Phantom Falls offer peaceful bushwalks of between 1.6 kilometres and 4 kilometres and you will see not only the waterfalls but the lush ferny forests of the Yarra Ranges, including some of Australia’s tallest trees. Kinglake National Park If you’ve been cooped up for way too long over winter and need to dust off your mountain bike then head to Kinglake for some downhill mountain biking action at Bowden Spur. Not for the faint-hearted, make sure you know what you’re doing before you hit this increasingly popular, steep downhill track.

If something relaxing is a bit more your style then stop for a picnic at Jehosaphat Gully. The new facilities in the picnic area are now surrounded by lush bush and the open grassy area is great for the kids to kick a ball or let off a bit of steam running about. For the waterfall fans, there are options here too. The 45 metre Masons Falls

are close to the top of the Great Dividing Range and are particularly spectacular after heavy rain. The large shady picnic area has barbecue facilities, shelters and toilets and the falls are only a short gentle walk away. There is a remote feel to the 15 minute walk in to Wombelano Falls along a narrow, winding bush track. Listen for the calls of lyrebirds and enjoy the tall

shady forest canopy. Cathedral Range State Park A hiker’s heaven, Cathedral Range is popular with those who enjoy camping, bushwalking and rockclimbing. If you feel up for a challenge, then hiking to the top of Mount Cathedral on a clear day is an experience that will stay with you for years to come. While strenuous, if you plan

ahead, read the signs, check the most suitable route for you or your group and allow plenty of time, even children under close adult supervision can enjoy the thrill of making it to the top. For those who prefer something a little more tame, spend some soothing time sitting by Little River or take a gentle wander along Little River Track or the Friends Nature Trail.

Knock on wood . . .

Eildon & District Woodworkers Annual wood show THE ALEXANDRA Community Shed/Eildon & District Woodworkers Guild Inc. will be holding its 19th Annual Wood Show on Saturday 10th October. Demonstrations by local woodworkers will showcase a range of skills including woodturning, box making, carving and operation of the Guild’s new bandsaw mill. There will even be an opportunity for children to get help from Guild members to make their own toys to take home. Special guests will also be exhibiting their artisan expertise. Ian Brown of the Peninsula Woodturners Guild will be displaying his mastery of Dremel rotary tool use to decorate woodturnings and the Seymour Wool Spinning and Weavers Guild will demonstrate how they spin wool and knit garments. In addition, the Guild will be selling its famous woodturning tools, timber slabs and woodturning blanks as well as members’ own woodwork. There will also be a number of commercial operators selling items including square drive screws, scroll sawn items and blades. About the guild The Eildon & District Woodworkers Guild recently joined the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) – hence the new name to include the Alexandra Community Shed. This affiliation with the AMSA brings with it access to a large national organisation and benefits such as far more comprehensive insurance cover. The Guild is also a founding member of the Murrindindi Men’s Shed Cluster, which brings together the men’s sheds within the Murrindindi Shire, plus Whittlesea. This group, which meets quarterly, provides a forum where Men’s Sheds can support each other, and provides access to facilities within the shire. The members of each Men’s Shed choose the focus of their activities, so the Alexandra Community Shed will continue to be a woodworking group.

The Guild has retained its membership of the national “Council of Woodworking Clubs,” and continues to be part of the NorthEast Woodworkers Forum, which each year brings together woodworkers’ clubs of north-east Victoria to discuss latest developments. The Guild currently boasts almost 60 members, of which about half meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays to work on a variety of projects, or simply have a cuppa and a chat. Members come from all walks of life, with a vast range of expertise and work on diverse projects including woodturning, furniture making or restoration, pyrography and making toys to be distributed to needy children at Christmas. Along with its toy donations, the Guild has contributed much to the community over the years: numerous honour boards for various CFA groups and other groups such as the Alexandra Race Club, several projects for Kellock Lodge, and furniture restoration for the Fawcett hall. An ongoing project of which they are most proud is providing wooden angels for the Rotary Club of Alexandra to present to their guest speakers. For each angel presented the Rotary Club makes a donation to “Angel Flight.” Unlike many other woodworking clubs, who have to either buy or scrounge suitable timber, the Guild has been blessed with a stockpile of timber from felled garden trees in the area or logs provided through the generosity of local people. This has enabled the Guild to sell some timber to other clubs at nominal prices, which helps to cover operating costs. With some of the proceeds from timber sales, the Guild has recently purchased a bandsaw mill to replace their chainsaw mill. This exciting new addition will be used to convert logs into slabs, which will be dried and machined to sizes suitable for both members’ and Guild projects, expanding the scope of work possible. Birds of the shire. . .

Watching birds – the white-throated treecreeper By Bob Tate THE WHITE-THROATED treecreeper is a bird of our forests and frequently found in suitable areas around Alexandra, all the year around. This bird is adapted to searching for insects in and under the bark of trees and will be seen in an undulating flight from the high spot in the tree to the base of the next one where, with specially adapted toes, it

will tend to hop up the tree. There are three forward pointing toes and one which points to the back. It is generally brown in colour but with a distinctive large white throat and stripes down the abdomen. The female has a small orange spot just behind the eye.

to the east coast of Australia and the bird may be found from Cooktown to Adelaide.

The call is very distinctive and loud and consists of a series of whit—whit—whit, staccato and rising.

In my flyer, Where to find birds, found in local information centres there are a number of areas listed where the white-throated treecreeper can usually be found. Some days there will seem to be many birds present, other days not so many, but they do not migrate to warmer climes.

The distribution is confined

There are three species of

treecreeper which can be found in the Alexandra area. As well as the white-throated treecreeper there is the redbrowed treecreeper which is rare and found in the wetter forests, and the brown treecreeper which is more a bird of the drier areas and is regularly seen around Gobur, Kanumbra and sometimes on the Rail Trail near Fawcett. Unfortunately the brown seems to be declining in numbers and there is some concern for this species. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2015 – 55

Bush tucker plants . . .

Wattles either have rod-shaped flowers (as above) or ball-shaped flowers (over). In either case the flowers give rise to pods full of edible black or brown seeds.

Wattle seed (Acacia species) By Angus Stewart WATTLES MAKE fabulous, if relatively short-lived, garden plants that can also be used as a bush food. The seeds of a number of species were collected by Aboriginal Australians and used as a major food source when in season. Given that there are hundreds of species of wattles in Australia that

flower at various times of the year this can provide an interesting project for the inspired gardener. For inland areas of Australia where heavy frost is a feature of the local climate you might like to try species such as mulga (Acacia aneura), silver wattle (A. retinodes) and our national floral emblem, the golden wattle

(Acacia pycnantha). All wattles are easily raised from seed which needs to be heat treated to crack open the hard seed coat to stimulate even germination. Simply put the seed into a cup and pour boiling water over it and then let it cool before sowing it in general purpose potting mix. It is best to put two or three

seeds into a small pot and then cull the seedlings down to the strongest one once they germinate. They will grow quickly so get them into the garden as soon as the roots peek out the bottom of the pot. Once the plants are established in your garden you should tip prune them every month or two

Acacia cognata, Mini Cog, in Barry Humphries garden. by pinching out the soft growing tips with your finger and thumb. This will cause the plant to branch out and ensure a more stable structure as well as more profuse flowering (and therefore more seeds to harvest). Wattles make great shelter plants around the edge of gardens and are great to create a quick effect in a new garden. Don’t expect them to live more than ten to fifteen years on average as they are a pioneer species in the bush that regenerate rapidly after fires and then die out to make way for slower growing trees such as eucalypts. To harvest the seed you must be observant and watch for the pods to start turning colour from green to brown. By laying a tarpaulin out underneath the plant and shaking the tree a good percentage of the seed can be harvested at one time. Be vigilant as ants will compete with you for the precious seed as it is a suitable food source for them as well. Mature seed can then be roasted in a medium oven for about half an hour. The roasted seeds can be crushed to form a flourlike material that is used to make into dough to bake damper. The crushed seed also makes a tasty flavouring for foods such as ice cream. Seeds can also be harvested green and eaten after being boiled or steamed. The seeds reputedly have much higher protein content than wheat and a low glycaemic index. Wattles are an iconic part of the Australian landscape so why not plant some in your garden to discover the joys of growing our national flower! GardeningWithAngus.com.au

Jessica (aged 10) caught this 75cm 19.9lb Murray cod on a yabbie. All the fish were caught in the main arm of Lake Eildon.

Eildon fishing report By Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle MURRAY COD are still about and being caught regularly. One angler managed to land 15 in a session while flat line trolling a Warlock lure (green and yellow) and an Old Mate lure in deep purple. The best he caught went 89cm. Ten year old Jessica caught her first cod on a yabbie in the main arm of the lake. Her cod went 75cm and weighed 19.9lb – well done Jessica. When we measured it against the fisheries ruler

Cooper (aged 5) with a brown trout caught on a fluoro pink Tassie Devil. there was only a difference of 100gms, pretty accurate all things considered. Brown trout have been very active of late and targeting them has coincided with their spawning run, from the mouth of Big River to Big River Arm and up the Big River itself. But now of course Big River is closed. However the lake is still producing well. By far the best lure to use has been the pink Tassies and still flat line trolling. One group

managed over 30 trout on a weekend in Big River Arm, averaging between 1lb and 2lb with the best going 3lb. Other Tassies such as white and frog patterns, Rapalas in minnow and Spotted Dog and King Cobras in purple have picked up trout as well. The majority of trout being caught in the lake have been browns with only a few rainbows in the mix. In recent times there has been no need to go right up into the arms as the main body of the lake is where all the action has been. The rocky outcrops near Fraser camping ground, Lake Eildon main arm, Wilsons Inlet and Jerusalem Creek have all been great areas to target. Eildon Pondage has just been restocked with 2,000, 375gm and over, rainbow trout prior to the school holidays. The results are already seeing anglers having a ball, lure and bait fisherman alike. Trout were released in three locations in both the upper and lower Pondage and right from the get go they were on. All the usual are working: dough, Power Bait (rainbow, pink and chartreuse), Gold Pegron minnows and Krocs and yes the pink and purple 26 Tassie Devils. Just prior to the release a 5lb brown was taken on a mudeye under float near Nursery Corner. The Pondage levels of late have been maintained between 40 per cent and 70 per cent so plenty of space to toss a line in. A quick note: to celebrate the opening of the trout fishing season the Goulburn Fishing Festival this year has a change of format, it will be run only on Saturday 5th September starting 10am and finishing off with a fire works display soon after dark. Equine facilitated learning By Jo Sheval FOR SEVERAL years Holistic Equitation provided a program for the YMCA at one of Victoria’s Youth Justice Centres. The program was designed to help the boys at the centre, aged from 18 – 21, who were in there for various crimes, from break and enter through to murder. The aim was to help them become more aware of themselves, work in teams and highlight their leadership skills. However, the benefits became much more. It was one of the centre’s most valued programs. Most of the boys we worked with had never even owned a pet cat or dog, let alone been around a half tonne flight animal. Despite their macho appearances, many of them were terrified and the morning of the program usually started with a lot of elbowing, shoving and

spitting as the boys pushed each other around, trying to avoid being the first one to interact with the horse. Failing in front of peers was not an option for these tough guys. Our first exercise involved simulations of being a horse to warm them up to the ideas and concepts of horse behaviour. This would allow us to watch and observe the personalities of the boys so we could plan how we communicated and gave one-on-one instruction. Over the years we worked with many boys and it’s fair to say that most had a pretty rough start to life. Many of them came from extremely low socioeconomic environments with limited access to education, and substance abuse was rife. What was very pleasing, though, is that they came to the horse with no expectations and no

preconceived ideas about what would happen.

breakthroughs with the boys, but a few really stand out:

They were blank canvases. This was perfect.

The clown A very tall, and thickly set boy named Rob*, had been the clown all day – a nice enough “Big Kid” who played the goof.

While the boys started out feeling unsure about their abilities, their confidence, appreciation and love for our beautiful equine friends grew quickly, and by lunchtime we always had to usher them out of the yard as they were reluctant to leave. A lot of preparation went into the horses before attending the centre to ensure they were ready and they proved themselves to be amazing, reliable teachers that helped to bring out the best in the young offenders. Many of the boys put on personas to fit in or find their place in often hostile environments and this incongruity is something many horses will not tolerate, especially my number one mare, Bonnie. There are countless stories of

It was Rob’s turn to come into the yard and ask Bonnie to walk beside him and to start some liberty games with her. Bonnie made it very clear she wanted nothing to do with him. I tried all the different physical cues to engage Bonnie with Rob, but she would swing her head right around in a fury to face the other way. I could sense that Bonnie’s rejection was triggering some emotions in Rob so I sent my energetic feelers out to sense what Bonnie was feeling and the images came floating across my mind like watching a movie. I saw Rob as a child in the middle of a big family feeling

Run for the Roses Saturday 24th October 62 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2015

like he was invisible, feeling like he could not get the attention of his parents as there was too much competition. I asked Rob to move away from Bonnie, I then asked him if he was a middle child of a large family and he said he was. I also asked him if he felt like he was often not seen and tears started to well up in his eyes. I explained that Bonnie wanted to see the real him and not the clown he had been showing her all day. Rob was in awe, he could not believe that a horse could tell so much about him and he agreed to do a little experiment to get Bonnie’s attention. I asked him what his favourite thing was in life, what filled his heart the most with joy and he told me it was football. Then I asked him to close his eyes and visualise himself playing football: to feel that joy right through his body and pull it to the centre of his heart. I could see his energy shift straight away and his clown persona disappear. I gently asked him to open his eyes and come back to me, then to walk over to Bonnie with the intention that he was deserving of her company and with a heart now full of

love and joy. He did and Bonnie hooked straight on, eager and willing, and enthusiastically they both trotted at liberty around the ring, stopping and turning and having an amazing time. There was a polar difference in both their attitudes and the joy on Rob’s face was priceless. When they came to a halt, Rob came up to me in astonishment. He could not believe what had just happened and could not believe how his thoughts and feelings could affect others, especially a horse. Bottling up emotions John* was an introvert who had been through the program over several years and he had a strong attachment to Bonnie. However, this particular day he was working with Tuff, a 20 year old retired camp drafting quarter horse. Tuff relished in his Equine Facilitated Learning work and has been an absolute trooper over the years we have been at the centre. His impeccable attitude and reliability have made him a star member of our team. John was one of our star students at the centre and his relationship with Bonnie was like something out of Romeo and Juliet. He loved

her and they had developed a beautiful kinship. John’s liberty and dancing skills with Bonnie were always a treat to watch. When working with Tuff, though, things got a bit hairy. John was gentle, sensitive and had a good sense of timing - qualities many of the boys lacked, which Tuff dealt with well. So what happened this day had me asking much deeper questions. John stepped into the ring with Tuff, patted him, groomed him and made friends. Tuff seemed calm and at ease with John. John then asked Tuff to move out around him very politely and in response Tuff suprisingly let loose, kicking at John who quickly got out of his way. I was shocked. Over the three years Tuff had been working at the centre he had never shown such aggression towards anyone. John was taken aback too as he was one of our more confident and skilled students. I knew that something was not right and I decided to tune into Tuff and ask him to show me what had happened. Straight away I felt that John was bottling something up:

emotions surrounding an argument he had in the last 24 hours. It was recent, raw and emotionally painful. However, to look at John you would think everything was perfectly ok. I approached John, who was a little shaken, and asked him if he was bottling anything up and he said no. But my intuition told me otherwise and I pressed him further. John lowered his head and I could feel the emotion welling up. He told me that he had a big fight with his family the night before on the phone and that it was weighing heavy on his mind. Phew … there it was and there it was gone. I told him that if Tuff really wanted to kick him he would have and what Tuff was really doing was reaching out to him, trying to help him shift that “shit” out of his head as a gesture of love and kindness. John was overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude for Tuff, realising how amazing these horses are as teachers and as mirrors of ourselves.
