or Kelly Petering and Chris Byers, business at the Yea Peppercorn Hotel is very much a family affair and has been from the beginning. It was the impending birth of their first child that prompted Kelly and Chris to look for a business of their own and a place to put down roots. The pair was living in Pannawonica, a tiny town in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, and working in the mining industry. But with a child on the way, they wanted to be closer to Kelly’s family in Melbourne so put feelers out for opportunities in Victoria. “With the little one, we thought it would be nice to have some more support, and the Yea Peppercorn Hotel came up in our search. We were

hand with the financials. Chris’ mum, Denise Holusa, moved from Perth to contribute her expertise as a pastry chef and wine tasting host, as well as her grandmotherly babysitting abilities.

Top: Yea Peppercorn Hotel offers boutique accommodation, with five rooms on site. Each room has its own distinct décor and feel, such as the Garden Suite pictured. Above: The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, with a range of cultural influences. Meals are served in the Kelly Dining Room, which still boasts much of its 1860s warmth and charm. looking for something B&B-ish, we never imagined it would be this exactly, but we found it and thought, ‘We could really do something with this place.’ We fell in love with the building and the area – driving up from Melbourne through Kinglake, it’s just so stunning,” Kelly says. Even though neither of them had run a business before, they figured with their combined skills they could make a go of it, and they moved from the Pilbara to Yea to take over the Peppercorn in late 2016. Chris is a chef with over 20 years’ worth of experience in the industry and an interest in antiques, which has left him in charge of the kitchen and making their mark on the interior decorating. Kelly, on the other hand, has a background in tour-guiding, along with some web marketing know-how and has put her talents to use building 12 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018

a warm atmosphere and making their online presence more user-friendly. While the business side of things has kept them on their toes, by far the biggest hurdle they faced when taking on the Peppercorn was fitting parenthood into the mix. “In a way, we were kind of naïve going in thinking that with a six-month-old baby it’s going to be fine, no dramas, but adjusting to that was a huge challenge. There were times when we’d just started and didn’t have the staff we have now, and I was waitressing with a six-monthold baby in my arms – many times! – and customers would be passing him around. So certainly the first few months for us were full on,” Kelly says with a laugh. But bringing in other family members has made life easier and given the business a boost. Kelly’s dad, Grant, is an accountant and has lent a helping

The family team’s efforts and support for one another have allowed them to accomplish a great deal over the past two years. Richard Cornish listed the Yea Peppercorn Hotel as one of his ‘Six reasons to visit Yea’ in the Sydney Morning Herald just months after Kelly and Chris bought it. It was also featured on the television series Postcards last year. Their most impressive accolade, however, is claiming silver in the 2017 RACV Victorian Tourism Awards in the Restaurant and Catering Services category. “That was very exciting and unexpected because at that time we’d only been in the business for nine months. We’d made a lot of changes to more systematic things rather than the look of the building – things like online accommodation bookings and a new website – so behind the scenes, we’d done a lot of work, and that’s what I suppose helped us through the awards,” Kelly says. “The gold winner in our category was the Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld, and they’re out of this world, so we were absolutely stoked to come runner-up to them.” Although their blood relatives have bolstered the business, part of Kelly’s

and Chris’ success is undoubtedly due to treating their employees and the broader community like kin. There are now eleven people working at the Peppercorn alongside Kelly, Chris, and Denise – a far cry from the days when Kelly was serving tables with an infant attached to her. “They are all amazing,” Kelly says of their employees, “and we could not do what we do without them. We have a lot of fun. We also work hard, but there’s always a bit of fun banter and often giggles behind the bar.” Kelly and Chris encourage people from both near and far to experience what the Peppercorn has on offer, rather than focusing only on tourists. They support artists in the Murrindindi Shire area by booking local musicians for events whenever possible. Kelly, whose professional life started with acting and who still harbours a passion for performing arts, is also a member of the Yea Arts Inc. Committee. “That’s a really big thing for us: being part of the community and actually giving back and seeing how we can not just be a place for people to come, but also provide for the community as well,” Kelly says. With their community spirit and award-winning hospitality, Kelly and Chris have crafted the Yea Peppercorn Hotel into a boutique but familyfriendly establishment, powered by a friendly family. “It’s a little bit more upmarket here, but not hoity-toity. Anyone is welcome, and we are very welcoming,” Kelly says. For more information go to yeapeppercorn.com.au

to provide guidance from a distance. But Ian says a lot of the success in competition is down to the dog. “If you’ve got a good dog, it can read the stock. You need to override them a little bit, but the dog knows where to be and how to go about it, you’ve just got to give them a bit of direction on which section you want them to go to next.”

ike any proficient athlete, a talented working dog makes its sport look effortless. In yard trials, this means moving a small flock of sheep through various obstacles that replicate everyday jobs on the farm. “It’s pretty much finetuned farm work,” says Ian Bates, North East Officer for the Victorian Yard Utility Farm Dog Association Inc (VYUFDA). In VYUFDA competitions, dogs manoeuvre sheep through forcing yards and

16 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018

drench races, draft them, then load and unload them from a trailer – all with a tenminute time limit. Each dog gets a hundred points to start, with points deducted any time the sheep get one over on the dog. “It’s all about stock flow, and if there’s a break in the flow, that’s when you lose points,” Ian says. During yard trials, the dog isn’t entirely alone in its efforts to get the sheep cleanly through the course and keep its hundred points: there is a handler issuing whistles or voice commands

Selective breeding plays a big part in creating those dogs with that innate ability to read stock, which is key to both farm work and trialing. However, a working dog’s skills are applied a little differently on the farm than they are in yard trials, with the latter requiring a ‘softer’ approach. So for breeders like Ian who focus on farm work, finding a pup with trial promise is a bonus. “You can have really good farm dogs, but you can’t tune them up enough to get them right for trialing, they’re too strong. If you’re doing an all-round job where you’ve got sheep and cattle, trying to bring them back to go quietly around a trial ground is a bit hard sometimes. But never lose sight of what you’re doing at home, your

work’s your main thing, and then the odd one will come through that you can trial,” he says. Whether bred specially for the sport or being happy surprises in litters of farm dog pups, the herding instincts of a dog are makeor-break in competition for one main reason: sheep are unpredictable. Anything from the time of day to weather conditions can affect sheep behaviour – they’re more likely to be frisky when they’re fresh at the start of the day, and soggy sheep don’t move well. On top of that, research suggests that sheep are a lot smarter than most of us give them credit for (their memories for faces are better than most humans’). The pitting of working dog wits against fickle flocks is part of what makes yard trials captivating to watch, and Ian says it’s an appealing spectator sport for many people. “If you love dogs, or you love the farm, and you appreciate a good dog working, you’ll enjoy watching yard trials.” For anyone who is keen to see some working dogs put their sheep-reading skills to the test, there will

involved in, and I’ve made a lot of good friends out of it. That’s probably the big thing that I find, the fellowship in it’s pretty good,” Ian says.

“We have a lot of people come in to see the trials, and they’ll sit there for the whole day and watch; they just appreciate a good dog,” Ian says.

As well as connecting with other dog-lovers, anyone who has a go at the training days will no doubt form a closer bond with their furry friend, nurturing their inner athlete and maybe even uncovering a potential champion.

The Yea Yard Trial will also be a highlight on the local competition circuit this spring, taking place a couple of weeks after the Alex Show. And for those who are interested in doing more than watching this compelling sport, Ian and Rod Cavill recently formed the Upper Goulburn Working Dog Group to encourage locals, and their canine companions, to try it for themselves. “It’s a great sport to get

or over 30 years, the Spring Fair and Open Day have held pride of place on the Mansfield Steiner School’s annual calendar. Founded in 1986, the school offers an enlivened form of education, its rich aesthetic curriculum fosters a love of learning and produces strong, articulate and empathetic individuals who are capable of making the world a better place. On Saturday, 27 October Mansfield Steiner School will again open its doors, inviting the community to partake in a day of celebration. Our beautiful grounds are transformed into a vibrant marketplace of food, craft and entertainment with activities for all ages. An extraordinarily magical atmosphere is created in our Morning Star and Rosa Mundi gardens. Young children delight in the wonders of the Rainbow Tent, The Grotto, The Gumboot Café, gem fossicking, the fishing game; a myriad of little treasures and activities capture the imaginations of little people. While the older children enjoy candle dipping, boat, sword and shield making, Donkey Lotto, a book stall and garland and wand making. Games are held on the oval for all ages and interests. For adults, demonstrations

of wool spinning, a succulent stall, a plant stall, clothing and footwear stall and trash and treasure – with an emphasis on vintage goods. Nutritious, organic, wholesome food is always an outstanding feature of the Fair. The highlight of this year’s Open Day will be our inaugural Song Writing Competition. Mansfield Steiner is encouraging all promising young musicians to create and perform their very own compositions. Entries are via our website. The finalists will be performing on centre stage in the afternoon, and their efforts will be judged by music industry specialists. The prize will be a recording session. Mansfield Steiner School will offer Year 10 next year and intends to offer the Diploma of International Baccalaureate in 2020. Class teachers will be available to answer questions and to share their passion for teaching and learning. 2018 Dogs Victoria State Retrieving Trial Championship for Gundogs and 2018 National Retrieving Trial Championship for Gundogs (Hosted by Dogs Victoria) are coming to Alexandra

I

am excited to announce Alexandra has been chosen as the location of the 2018 National Retrieving Dog Championship. Victoria last hosted the event five years ago. There will also be two lead-up trails, including the Victorian State Championship, preceded by the Golden Retriever Club of Victoria and Victorian Gundog Club, also in the Alexandra area. These events will be held on consecutive weekends over three weeks in September. Alexandra was chosen from a long list of areas throughout Victoria due to the excellent terrain available, together with the abundant waterways, which are vital in retriever trials and the excellent accommodation and facilities available in the immediate area. 22 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018

When considering a suitable site, it is important to look at all the activities that are available to competitors, their families, friends, organisers and the general public who will come to see these trials. As there are three trials over three weeks, most competitors will base themselves in the town or immediate area and they will be looking for things to do and see between competitions. This area is blessed with wineries, fishing, bushwalking, water sports, horse riding, rail trails and a host of other activities. Food is of course important to tourists and this area boasts some of the best eateries in country Victoria. A day trip from Alexandra can see competitors in numerous national parks, cruising on a boat on the beautiful Lake Eildon or perhaps attending

a Heritage Machinery Festival. Retrieving trials began in Victoria over 100 years ago when hunters boasted they had the best hunting dog. Trials commenced and were designed to test the dogs under simulated hunting conditions. One hundred years on and competitors still believe that they have the best dog. Due to advanced training techniques, the tests within the trials have increased significantly in difficulty. In modern retrieving trials there is no live game used and the competitor fires blank cartridges in a shotgun. The game is thrown by a mechanical device in an effort to represent actual hunting conditions only at far greater distances. The National Championship is run over three days with

a total of nine runs and up to 27 items of game to be retrieved. These are highly trained dogs that are required to be able to locate game thrown at distances up to 150 metres. They are also required to be handled onto game that the judge has placed in a spot unknown to the dog, again at distances up to 150 metres. They are tested over land and water with a variety of complex tests including double and triple retrieves devised by the judges. Hunting and retrieving dogs must be steady to shot and have very high obedience including heeling off lead and obeying whistle, voice and handlers commands. To enter the Nationals, competitors must qualify by winning at least one ‘Restricted’ trial.

Above left: Russell Whitechurch with 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 Australian National Retrieving Trial Champion, Adderslot Chief. Above right: Trevor Stow winning two trials in one weekend with Retrieving Trial Champion, Adderslot Georgie Anna. It is expected that up to 50 dogs will enter in this year’s event. They will come from all over Australia with entries from every state. Included in the dogs to enter this year will be Adderslot Chief. She is owned and trained by Russell Whitechurch and she is the only dog in history to win four National Championships. Chief was bred by local Labrador breeder Julie Cramond who was a driving force in obtaining the trials for Alexandra. Also in attendance will be Adderslot Carbo (bred by Julie Cramond), handled and owned by Greg Playdon. Carbo won the 2013 National Championships. Other handler-dog duos to keep an eye on include Karl Britton and Acolon Prince of Cypher, who won the 2017 ‘Dog of the Year’, John Stott and Kadnook Dreams Edge, who is currently leading the 2018 ‘Dog of the Year’. In fact, all the top retrieving dogs in Australia will be competing. Many gun dog breeds are entered in these trials, but by far the most successful are the Labradors. Labradors are ideally suited to this type of work as they are great retrievers, wonderful water dogs and very hardy. There are also

some excellent Golden Retrievers, German Shorthaired Pointers and a few spaniels. The Golden Retrievers and German Shorthaired Pointers are very competitive. They have a great nose and cover lots of area. They love to hunt. And what can be better that an English Springer Spaniel doing its stuff? These little pocket dynamos are fearless and are natural hunting dogs. There is no entry fee for spectators who are more than welcome. The up-coming trials are an opportunity for hunters and dog lovers in general to see the cream of the crop doing what they were bred to do; hunt and retrieve. There is usually an opportunity to talk to the handlers after they have run their dog and get a few training tips from the best in the country. If you would like information on Australian National Kennel Club retrieving trials please visit: http:// ankc.org.au/media/9042/14-rt-forgundogs-2014v4.pdf Anybody who is interested in attending or would like further information contact juliecramond@internode.on.net for times and locations of the various events.

The three trials that will be held in Alexandra 1. LEAD UP TRIAL This trial will be conducted by the Victorian Gundog Club and the Golden Retriever Club on 1 and 2 September. This trial will have 3 levels of standard: ‘Novice’, ‘Restricted’ and ‘All Age’. The All Age tests will allow competitors to enter their dogs and run them in similar terrain to that which will be used in the State and Nationals. It will give competitors a chance to tune up their dogs and work on any areas that need improvement before the big events. 2. 2018 VICTORIAN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS This prestigious event will be held on the following weekend, 8 and 9 September. This year it will be judged by our most experienced retrieving judge Bob Tawton in conjunction with his son Gareth, who is a championship judge in his own right. 3. 2018 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP For the first time this event will be judged by a husband and wife team Noel and Kate Eltringham who have been breeding, trialling and judging dogs for more years than they care to remember. They are both highly thought of championship judges and have been given the honour of officiating at this year’s Nationals. The event will be run on Friday 14, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September. T

he southern toadlet (Pseudophryne semimarmorata) is a curious little critter endemic to our neck of the woods, the south-eastern corner of Australia. Given its distribution through the lower half of Victoria and a large chunk of Tassie, the first half of the southern toadlet’s common name isn’t much of a surprise. The second half is a little less straightforward, though, because it’s based

on looks rather than membership in the ‘true toad’ family, Bufonidae. “This guy has a toad-like appearance, and it’s very small. I’ve never seen one bigger than four centimetres, but you’re really looking at a two-centimetre frog. So I guess ‘toadlet’ kind of fits,” says Craig Cleeland, who has been studying southern toadlets for 22 years. The warty skin on its back, which varies from dark brown to olive green, certainly gives a toady

impression. On the flipside, the toadlet’s distinctive belly markings are more akin to those of South America’s famously colourful poison arrow frogs.

the eye-catching markings are a warning to potential predators that this little amphibian is highly toxic and does not make a good meal.

“It can range from fireengine red right the way through to a pale-ish yellow all around the thighs and under the chin. Then in the main part of the belly, it has black-and-white mottling,” Craig says.

Southern toadlets can accumulate toxins through their diet, just as poison arrow frogs do, but they also synthesise their own powerfully poisonous alkaloids, which their South American counterparts can’t do.

The toadlet’s flashy underside isn’t just for show. Like poison arrow frogs,

“Poison arrow frogs have this incredible toxin, which they get from the ants they Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018 – 25

Southern toadlets were once widely distributed throughout Victoria, but are now confined to small patches of remnant land. “To give an example: back in 1976, a research student out of Melbourne university drove up the foothills out the back of Moe, stopped at 26 different locations and collected on average a dozen frogs at each location from the side of the road. Now, none of those locations are viable,” Craig says. Photo taken by John Wombey. Photo courtesy CSIRO. eat, and the ants get it from the plants they eat, so it’s sequestered along the food chain. Take the poison arrow frogs out of that ecosystem, and they’re quite harmless. Southern toadlets make their own – so don’t go eating them! – but they’re brightlycoloured on the belly for a reason,” Craig says.

change the floristics [plant species present in an area] completely. So it’s very subtle, but by maintaining control of seed-eating ants and things like that, you have an ecosystem in some sort of balance. Take those frogs out and all of a sudden you can change the floristics significantly,” Craig says.

Southern toadlets are predominantly ant-eating frogs, and this dining choice bestows them with a vital role in balancing ecosystems. In particular, by keeping ants in check, southern toadlets help maintain harmony among plant populations.

Southern toadlets are astonishingly long-lived for such small critters – Craig says he wouldn’t be surprised if they lived over 15 years in the wild – and they have an interesting strategy when it comes to survival of the species.

“When you’ve got large numbers of ant-eating frogs, they tend to control the ant numbers. When you lose them out of ecosystems, what do those elevated ant numbers do to the ecosystem itself? And, surprisingly, it can

The toadlets make nests near shallow depressions in the earth that flood periodically. Then in autumn, they lay eggs, which patiently wait until rain creates a suitable home for tadpoles.

26 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018

“They’ll lay their eggs in

April, and those eggs will develop to a reasonably advanced stage, then they’ll just pause their development. They can remain viable for a long time – they’ve had them in their labs for up to a year and still viable, and I’ve seen them in the field six months and still viable. What they’re waiting for is flooding rains. So as soon as the rain comes, the jelly capsule dissolves down, and the tadpole flushes into the depression.” This breeding strategy requires quite a specific type of habitat combined with predictable rain events in order to be successful. They prefer their nest sites to be in open areas of forest, often in gullies, and the tadpoles need their pond to last for six months to survive to maturity. The toadlets have managed to somewhat adapt to

humans altering their habitat – taking up residence in places like wheel ruts and drainage lines for dams – but the conditions they need to raise their young are at odds with much of our activity and changes in climate. As a result, southern toadlet populations are dwindling, and they are listed as vulnerable to extinction in Victoria. “We’ve tended to modify the hydrology a fair bit, and we’ve reduced their habitat down to a whole lot of remnant land,” Craig says. “What’s happened through south-eastern Australia is we’re not getting those consistent regular rains, and our water table has dropped. You can still get those really big rain events, but then you don’t get that constant drizzle and follow up. So on many occasions, I’ve seen the eggs hatch out and the

depression is full of water, and the tadpoles are swimming around. But a month later they’re bone dry again, and all those tadpoles have died in the bottom of the depression.”

way you would ever know you had southern toadlets on your property would be if you were out in the evening in April or early May and you could hear them,” Craig says.

In the past, southern toadlet populations were recorded throughout the Murrindindi Shire region, and there may be remnant populations in the area, particularly on private land, that have not been found in recent surveys. Craig says he is keen to learn of these populations and assist landholders in their management.

“Their call is a short, sharp chirp. Many people might mistake the call for an insect. It comes from the ground, and it comes away from water because they don’t actually breed in water.”

Due to their small size and cryptic nature, the best way to detect southern toadlets is to listen out for them around potential nesting sites on mid-autumn evenings. “They’ll dig a hole, and call from within the nest. The only

Rupert Brennan selecting succulent arrangements to be delivered to local schools and businesses as part of the succulent program at Menzies Support Centre.

T

he succulent program at Menzies Support Services is about more than just colourful, hardy plants. For participating clients, the program represents everything from understanding design principals to engaging with local businesses to cultivating employment opportunities. At present, the program involves creating succulent arrangements in pots, hiring these out to local businesses and schools for a small fee and swapping them over regularly to keep displays fresh. Going out to shops and schools with support worker Naomi Booker is a highlight of the program for many clients, who are responsible for a range of tasks including changing

over arrangements, taking payments, and writing receipts.

Leah Ross and support workers Julie Elliott and Ros Humphries.

“I really enjoy delivering the plants to businesses because I like meeting people and showing them what we can do, makes me feel proud,” says succulent program member Jenna Elms-Smith.

“We needed a program that accessed the community. After cleaning out the hothouse, which at the time was being used as a storage shed, we collected cuttings from around the centre and our homes, advertised on our Facebook page for donations of succulent cuttings, then visited local op shops for pots. Then bingo the succulent program was up and running. We then approached the local shops asking if they were interested in being involved in our program,” Julie says.

Aside from getting out into the community and sharing the fruits of their labour, there are many other aspects of the program that inspire participants, including online research, label design, and plant care. “Watering the plants and making new ones from leaves, I like best,” says Rupert Brennan, who has been part of the succulent program since its early days. The succulent program, which began in 2016, was the brainchild of then-CEO

Recently, Mish Farkashazy took over facilitating the program and hopes to help take it to the next level. “The end goal is to provide employment opportunities

for the clients so that they can make their own money, and what better way is there to earn money than by doing something you love and are passionate about?” Mish says. A massive push towards that end goal has come in the form of financial support for horticultural equipment and education. CEO Melinda Burgess has secured an RACV Community Grant, which will go towards a new hothouse and other gardening equipment. Melinda has also secured funding for places in a Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE Certificate II in Horticulture course. Clients who take part will receive the nationally accredited qualification along with a pack including a personal raised garden bed, waterproof boots, gloves, tools, and pots. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018 – 29

The horticulture certification is starting this August, and those enrolled in the course will help build the hothouse, which will be the new home for the succulent program among other things. “We encourage the clients to participate in all aspects of the program; participants will be helping to construct the hothouse, design the layout, learn all the tricks of the trade and what they would like to grow in the future,” Mish says. Several of the succulent program participants are doing the Certificate II in Horticulture. For some, the succulent program has piqued an interest in plant-based businesses. “When we do succulents, I like it,” client Nicole Thorn says when asked why she decided to enroll in the horticulture course. As well as making the most of the new hothouse and clients’ horticultural education, Mish says getting more businesses and locals involved in the program and selling arrangements and plants are high on the list of priorities.

These succulent arrangements are a budding business opportunity for participants in the program: “There are many synergies within programs run at Menzies. The clients choose to pursue their interests such as gardening, cooking, woodworking, welding, craft, computers, literacy, numeracy etc., and by incorporating these new learned skills and project outcomes clients have slowly created their own micro business,” Mish says.

“At the moment, the succulent display rental service just covers the costs of materials. Once we surpass that and move into actually selling, the clients will be able to earn a wage.” There are plans to have succulent and handmade crafts stalls at

Robyn Schrader’s and Carole Staley’s property in Taggerty open for the Alexandra & District Open Gardens on 27 and 28 October.

T

he shire celebrates spring with open gardens in and around Alexandra, Yea and Ruffy.

Alexandra District Open Gardens 27 and 28 October This year six town gardens and four country gardens will be open and at their spring best when the countryside is lush and flowers are bursting forth after their harsh winter sojourn. Many of the gardens feature views of the spectacular surrounding countryside and your drive down the valley past the Cathedral Range will be a delight. Views of this majestic range are also captured in the ‘borrowed’ landscapes of several gardens, some of which

were impacted by the 2009 bushfires. The efforts of Robyn Schrader and Carole Staley have been trial and error as they attempted to reestablish their Taggerty garden, having lost the protection of the boundary trees in the fires, but many of the old trees healed and continue to live. Their philosophy has been to preserve and nurture anything that survived, hence the wonderfully eclectic mixture of old and new, ornamental and native plants. The garden has also suffered wind, floods and frosts and many newly planted shrubs and some older ones have been lost along the way forcing a reassessment of

future plans. This year has seen a laying out of final garden beds with over 200 additional plants, which will bring the garden together. When you arrive wander down the driveway lined with 100-year-old chestnut trees and enjoy the sight of the new home surrounded by garden beds featuring ornamental trees, fruit trees, herb and vegetable gardens. As you head towards the banks of the Acheron River, you will notice the transition to native plants integrating with the natural landscape creating a haven for birds and wildlife. Moving back to the house, you can take in the stunning view of the Cathedral Range. Lynne and Doug Walter bought their 25 acre

Taggerty property in 2001 and immediately started a revegetation program. The house was built in 2003 and the vegie garden and chook run were established, and with hard work and good luck the garden survived the 2009 bushfires. This can be a harsh climate and with water constraints as well the garden had to be tough. Prerequisites for plant choice are drought tolerant, frost tolerant and clay tolerant. Another aim was to encourage birds, wildlife and frogs, so a pond had to be included. To create the garden beds, clay from the pond was combined with cow manure, mounded, then covered with thick layers of newspaper and autumn leaves. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018 – 33

Lynne and Doug Walter’s garden in Taggerty open for the Alexandra & District Open Gardens. Generous mulching after planting ensured the plants needed no further watering. Inspired by the powerful presence of the Cathedral Mountain as a backdrop, Australian native plants were chosen. Eucalypts, grevilleas, correas, banksias, acacias and many different grasses provide contrasting foliage and flowers throughout the year. Many birds nest in the garden and the bees thrive on the nectar and pollen. This garden will inspire you to ‘think native’ and enjoy the creatures who call it home. Placed throughout the garden are the wonderful creations of master blacksmith, Dietmar Fleckhammer, and Doug will be happy to answer hobby beekeeping questions throughout the day. At Loretta and Ian Maggs’ property in Taggerty, the long driveway invites you in and the ornamental 34 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018

pear trees that line it give spectacular blossom in spring and great colour in autumn. A feature of this garden is the large undercover outdoor area and fernery, and the backdrop of the Cathedral Ranges enhances the views of the garden from the outdoor space. This garden has a range of spring flowering plants including iris, lilac, roses, buddlejas and salvia, which are mixed in beds with accent foliage plants. Some key rustic pieces, pots and hanging baskets add interest to the beds and the fernery. Most of the gardens this year will feature additional attractions including a major sculpture exhibition and botanical flora display at Marian Rennie’s well-known country property in Acheron. Refreshments, artist displays, botanical embroidery, and a range of plants and handmade tools will be

available for sale at various gardens. Alexandra is less than two hours from Melbourne, and less than an hour from the Hume Freeway. Taggerty is about 50 minutes from Healesville via the spectacular Black Spur which is one of Victoria’s great drives. There are some delightful places to stay in the Alexandra district, so why not come for the weekend and enjoy the gardens and attractions at your leisure? It’s best to get in early and book your accommodation. Tickets and the Garden Guide with maps will be available at each open garden, the Alexandra Visitor Information Centre and Alexandra Garden Centre. Full garden descriptions and all details are available on the website alexandraopengardens .com.au

Yea Rotary Yea & District Open Gardens 10 and 11 November All the country gardens are to be found in the tiny outlying district of Strath Creek, so there will be minimal travelling to each garden once you arrive there. All of these open gardens are on outstanding farming properties with stunning gardens and magnificent views of the surrounding ‘Valley of a Thousand Hills’. ‘Callandoon’ has been designed by Melbournebased landscape designer Ric Day and features are an extensive lake, wetland areas and beautiful walks throughout, including the walk along the bubbling King Parrot Creek, which runs through the bottom of the garden. Extensive lawns with steeply carved ‘moguls’ mirroring the surrounding hills, exotic and native plantings, long vistas and

Gardens open for the Yea & District Open Gardens 10 and 11 November, above, ‘Wingspread’; left, ‘Callandoon’; below, ‘The Three Sisters’. water features are highlights. ‘Strath Glen Station’ has not been open for several years and this beautiful, large country garden has matured and been considerably extended since then. A feature of the garden is the 700 roses chosen for their fragrance. Sweeping lawns, rock walling, ornamental features and overflowing garden beds will delight. The magnificent sweeping, treelined driveway is a stunning entrance. ‘Waiora’ opened in 2013 as a cottage garden. Two years ago an extensive make-over designed by Paul Bangay has transformed the rear of the garden to take full advantage of the magnificent views and incorporates an infinity pool, borders full of year-round colour, entertaining spaces and lawns for children’s play. The transformation 36 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018

was featured in ABC’s Dream Gardens series. The front garden remains a pretty cottage garden but is destined for a stage two make-over in the future. ‘Wingspread’ will delight with beds full of colour, extensive rock gardens, walks leading to more treasures to discover; note the lovely Crab Apple Walk. Extensive entertaining areas show the owners love of outdoor entertaining. The unusual round straw bale house overlooks a large pond filled with water lilies and the deck is perfectly placed to enjoy an evening glass of wine. The artistic use of stone and wood enhance this garden. ‘The Three Sisters’ has been generously opened by the owners several times over the years and visitors love to return year after year

Gardens in Ruffy will be open over the weekend of 10 and 11 November. to seen the magnificent Iris collection and the beds full of old-fashioned colour. Many water features, extensive rock walling, a blend of natives and exotics, arches spilling over with roses and wisteria and the outstanding views will all delight. The final garden, belonging to Paul and Janine, is a cottage garden full of old-fashioned flowers giving wonderful colour. The highlights of the garden are the enormous heritage cypress, thought to be 120 years old, which dominates the front garden, and the circular raised vegetable garden, which is a feature in itself. Mature trees, beautiful borders and spectacular views complete this special place. The other four gardens open to the public this year are to be found in Yea township and only one has been open to the public before and has extensive new plantings. All are beautiful gardens with many unique features and different styles. The Yea Garden Club will hold their annual plant sale over the weekend in the beautiful “Abutilon” garden. Hundreds of pots at bargain prices. The Yea & District Open Gardens will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 November. Tickets are $5 for the town gardens and $8 for the large country estate gardens or $35 for a composite ticket to visit all gardens over the two days. Full garden descriptions and maps will be available on the website www.yearotary.org.au from the end of August. Enquiries to 0448 511 139 and 5780 1274.

Ruffy Artfest 2018 Open Gardens 10 and 11 November The Ruffy Artfest is featuring not only three open gardens to support its art show in November 2018, but also a very different venue, which will be just perfect for children and the young at heart who love lovable animals – it is a donkey farm where visitors will be shown around and encouraged to pat, brush and cuddle these beautiful creatures. The Open Gardens focus on three local sites. One is on the Top Road and was, in its hey day, the old Terip Terip Primary School. Today the school is owned by two devoted gardeners who are continuing to put a lot of thought and work into creating a self sustaining garden featuring kangaroo grass, well-known trees, shrubs and trees as well as an incredible garden dam which is increasingly popular with yabbies. The vegetable garden will make all gardeners envious.

The two other gardens are both located on McLeans Lane off the Longwood Ruffy Road. The first is a younger garden featuring a growing orchard, which is producing heaps of fruit in spring and summer. The garden is an ongoing one with absolutely stunning views down the valley towards Euroa. The third garden is one that was shown by the Ruffy Artfest several years ago but now has new and exciting plants and trees to see because everything has grown and matured considerably. Features of this garden are stands of ornamental pears and copses of silver birch alongside new plantings of echiums and varieties of Euphorbia. The illusion of extending the garden has been achieved by further plantings of Manchurian pears and scarlet oaks into what was the old bull paddock. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018 – 37

T

he Yea Rotary Garden Expo has become an established event on the calendar of many gardeners and will be held over the weekend of 22 and 23 September. The Expo celebrates all things to do with gardening, from flower seedlings to trees, from garden pots to garden decorations, from fertilisers and soils to garden tools and implements, protective clothing and even chooks. This is a wonderful opportunity for enthusiastic gardeners to see new plants and products, which will be show-cased by numerous and varied businesses. There will be a number of new vendors this year, including a rose nursery from Swan

Hill, Dinkum Sheds from Alexandra, G and M Rare Bulbs, and Black Range Silhouettes. This year the Expo will be held at a new venue – the surrounds of the Yea Saleyards. This site not only provides a large, flat and easily accessible area for vendors and their displays, but also a huge car park immediately adjacent (parking is free). The Rotary Plant Creche will be located next to the entrance and will enable visitors to deposit their purchases in a secure area and collect them as they leave. Refreshments will be offered by the Yea Wetlands Committee in a large undercover eating area with tables

The Rotary Club of Yea will run a book stall featuring pre-loved garden books.

her talk, Julie will provide some practical advice on how to grow and harvest Australian native plants and how to use them in the kitchen.

The Expo also provides a speakers’ program with talks given by a number of interesting people who are experts in their field.

Maria McCarter from Sunset Valley Chicks will share her expertise on raising chooks and will also have some poultry for sale.

One of the speakers will be Julie Weatherhead, author of Australian Native Food Harvest Guide for the Passionate Cook and Gardener. This book won Julie the 2017 National Gourmand Cookbook award for food heritage. Julie and her husband run Peppermint Ridge Farm. They are passionate about growing and producing quality foods in a sustainable manner. In

S

pring is here and extra water flowing over the many waterfalls in Murrindindi Shire make it a great time to visit them. There are many waterfalls to see and walking tracks of varying lengths through towering trees and lush ferny gullies to enjoy on the way to each waterfall.

Kinglake National Park Kinglake National Park is a great place to visit if it’s waterfalls you love. Masons Falls Masons Falls, the mostvisited place in the park, has picturesque cascading falls, beautiful walks and a great picnic area to enjoy. The 45-metre falls are quite spectacular after heavy rain. The large, shady picnic area has barbecue facilities, shelters and toilets and the

falls are only a short gentle walk away. Wombelano Falls There is a remote feel to the 15-minute walk in to Wombelano Falls along the narrow, winding bush track. Lyrebirds abound deep in the gully, while the greater gliders wait for dusk before they emerge from their homes in oldgrowth eucalypts. This is a particularly lovely place to visit in late winter and early spring when water flows are strong and the blackwoods are flowering.

Yarra Ranges National Park There’s no better time to visit the waterfalls of the Yarra Ranges area! Several waterfalls located within a short drive of each other make a drive and walk tour of the waterfalls a great outing. Nestled in lush bush in the Yarra Ranges National Park near Marysville are three waterfalls, each with its own unique character.

Steavenson Falls

Cora Lyn Falls

This large and most wellknown waterfall of the area is on the outskirts of Marysville. A wide, flat, paved walking track leads to the base of the towering falls. The more adventurous can walk the narrow trail to the top of the falls for a stunning view.

With two creeks joining at the top of the falls, Cora Lyn is a wonderful place to visit after heavy rain. While you’re visiting these falls you can walk the full 4km loop track and enjoy the many other sights along the way, including one of Australia’s

tallest trees and the remains of the historic Cambarville township. o commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1 the Creswick Light Horse Re-enactment Troop will conduct demonstrations throughout the day at the Alexandra races on Saturday 27 October. The Creswick RSL Light Horse Troop was formed in 1995 as a joint initiative of the Creswick Youth Alliance, the Creswick Police and the Creswick RSL Sub Branch. The Founder, Gary Chandler, has a strong personal connection with the Light Horse. His grandfather, William Chandler, was a member of the 4th Light Horse Regiment and their colours were adopted for the troop. The involvement of women and children has made the Troop distinct from many other Light Horse re-enactment organizations. The female members ride ‘In Memory’ as indicated by the black

armbands they wear. The Creswick RSL Light Horse Troop began with 10 members and their first parade was at the Ballarat Begonia Festival in Ballarat Victoria in March 1995. Subsequently, the Troop proved so popular that it was necessary to start affiliate troops. The combined membership of all these troops makes them the largest in Victoria and has enabled organizers to have large numbers of Light Horseman at events. At venues around Victoria and interstate the Creswick RSL Light Horse Troop honours all veterans and the spirit of the ANZAC’s by their involvement in commemorative ceremonies. The Troop brings history to life with their involvement in these proceedings and sharpens awareness of the extreme sacrifice that the members of the Australian Light Horse have made.

ust inside the door of Anne Slater’s Gobur studio, on the upper floor of a recently built barn, there stands a small blackboard with random words in white chalk. These words - interest, concentration, energy, curiosity, determination, dedication, focus and practice - pretty much sum up Anne’s approach to her art. Anne disputes the widely held belief that artistic ability is a rare, innate gift that is bestowed on some people but not others. Instead, she believes that with a combination of the qualities

outlined on her blackboard, plus some technical training and a willingness to “have a go”, anyone can be an artist. However, it took Anne some time to arrive at this conviction. In fact, in her early 20s, she almost turned her back on art completely. Although she had always loved to draw and studied art at high school and the Council of Adult Education in Melbourne, she received no real technical instruction and so didn’t feel she was making any progress. As Anne explains, “I gave up - totally. I felt I was missing something. I thought you had to have a certain talent and I didn’t have it.”

Fortunately, some time later, she discovered a book that changed her life. It was called “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: How to Unlock Your Hidden Artistic Talent” by Betty Edwards. “I read the first page and thought this is what I have been after - some instruction. I went on to read the book from cover to cover. I did every exercise and got more and more excited,” Anne says. The skills she learnt from the book were then honed through life drawing classes. At the time, Anne was working in a corporate office in Melbourne and started to

use every moment of downtime to practice her drawing skills particularly when travelling to and from work on the train. “I’d put a sketch book and pencil in my handbag and surreptitiously draw other people on the train. Invariably people would notice me looking at them and so I started drawing my own hands, feet, watch and jewellery.” During the lunchtime lull at work, while relieving on the reception desk, she would draw anything in view pencil sharpener, phone, stapler. It didn’t matter, it was all practice. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2018 – 51

Anne notes that she initially progressed very quickly and then plateaued. And this is where courage and determination had to come in. “You have to practice, practice and practice and not give up. Some days you don’t live up to your own expectations but the only way to improve is to take risks and makes lots of errors.” She also believes it is important to avoid comparing yourself to others or being deflected by what other people are saying or doing. As well as practicing her drawing skills, Anne has taken numerous art courses in Victoria and Tasmania as well as via the internet and this has led her into oil, acrylic and watercolour painting. Anne is also an avid reader of artists’ biographies and enjoys learning about their triumphs and struggles. “They all have the same issues, even the famous artists,” Anne says. In recent years, Anne’s artistic ability has been noticed by friends who have asked her to paint portraits of family members, particularly children. “Representational portraits are very challenging,” Anne says. “ You have to draw on all the traditional skills. It is very slow and intense work plus you have the pressure of living up to others’ expectations.” To balance the demands of portrait painting, Anne has been busy creating stencil paintings which she frames or makes into greeting cards. Anne loves this art form. “The works are small, colourful, fun and fast to make. You can be very creative and you only have to please yourself.”

Scratch boarding is another art form that Anne has enthusiastically embraced. With this medium, images are engraved with sharp tools onto a clay board covered with black ink. As the black ink is scratched away, it reveals the white clay underneath, creating pictures with incredible detail and texture. Her latest subjects have been Australian birds such as the magpie and kookaburra. Doing what you love in art is very important to Anne. “If I am in love with a finished product and would be happy to have it on my wall, it will sell,” Anne says. And, given the rate at which her works are being snapped up at the “Made in Mansfield” shop at 82 High Street, Mansfield, it seems she is right. In fact, Anne is now flat out

trying to replenish her stocks. Anne’s belief that everyone has artistic talent is evident in her willingness to run workshops for novices. In March this year, she ran a short session on stencil painting for members of Murrindindi East U3A and, next year, she will expand this to a half-day workshop. On the wall of her studio, Anne has a small, bright painting dotted with quotes in black ink. One of them, by Albert Einstein reads, “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.” While passion and curiosity have certainly contributed to Anne’s success, her incredible determination and persistence have also played a significant part. If you’d like to find out more about Anne’s work you can contact her on 0412 669 371 or email her at studiomedialuna@gmail.com.

his September, Alexandra Farmstay will host its second annual fundraising concert. Proceeds from the event will provide sponsorship for several local students to attend Mittagundi Outdoor Education Centre in Glen Valley, Victoria. Last year’s fundraiser brought in enough money to send nine Alexandra Secondary College kids to Mittagundi. Building on this success, Alexandra Farmstay owners Neri and

Hylke Kijlstra plan to make the 2018 event even more significant. “This year, we’ll get a little bit bigger again. We’ll have an open mic night on the Friday night and bands playing on the Saturday night, and we’ve got a puppet show coming for the kids,” Neri says. A total of six bands will perform between 10am and 10pm on the Saturday, with genres from the pop-rock end of the music spectrum to the blues and roots end.

Mixing two of their motivations for running the fundraiser – to give back to the community and provide a paid gig for musicians – Neri and Hylke have billed a couple of acts with local ties. Among those playing will be female duo This Way North, one half of which is Leisha Jungalwalla, who grew up in Alexandra. Tully Sumner, who hails from the Central Highlands, is also in the line-up. Concertgoers can camp at Alexandra Farmstay for the

weekend, and Neri says they aim to make this year’s event even more family-friendly than last year’s, ensuring those with little ones don’t miss out on any of the fun. “Last year there were heaps of kids; we want to encourage that, so we’ll have a kids corner. We’re also going to start the bands quite early and finish quite early.” Neri says community support for the event was crucial to last year’s success, and it will no doubt be the

Joe Camilleri

M

arysville is once again set to be abuzz with a weekend of jazz and blues this spring. Joe Camilleri and Renée Geyer, two of the biggest names in jazz and blues, will head up this year’s Marysville Jazz & Blues Weekend on Friday 19 to Sunday 21 October. The weekend is a project of the Lions Club of Marysville and District with a dedicated subcommittee of Lions members, other willing helpers and volunteers. Key objectives include increasing tourism and to bolster the local economy. Now in its fourth year, the weekend has quickly cemented its place on the music lover’s calendar. Last year, more than 2000 visitors

came to soak up the jazz and blues and the atmosphere of Marysville and district. Many made it a long weekend to enjoy the live music as well as experiencing the sheer natural beauty of the Marysville and surrounding region. Along with The Black Sorrows and Renee Geyer, this year’s weekend includes a fabulous line-up of talent appearing over three days. Andy Layfield 3, The Ben Charnley Quartet, Justin Yap Band, Dr Crask and his Swingin’ Elixr, Shirazz, Bo Jenkins, Kevin Buckingham Band, and Big Band Frequency are just a few of the more than 40 performers and bands appearing over the weekend. Organising Chairman,

Colin Davies, said it was exhilarating to see the weekend featuring two undisputed icons of the Australian music scene and a fabulous line-up of talent. Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows have have a formidable reputation with Joe Camilleri celebrating more than half a century in the music business. He is one of the most committed and successful musicians this country has ever produced. Inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007, Joe has written numerous milestone Australian hits that have become part of Australian music culture. Renée Geyer is an undeniable and bona fide music icon – starting as a ‘sensual blues belter’, a

‘Countdown Superstar’ in her 20s; boasting a string of pop, soul and reggae hits spanning the 70s and 80s; and her LA years in the studio with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Sting, Joe Cocker and Chaka Kahn. “One of the unique aspects of our weekend”, says Colin, “is that, as a boutique event with limited tickets, audiences can get an ‘up close and personal view’ of the performers – no need for binoculars in any of our venues.” Tickets are on sale now with a whole weekend of live acts for just $155.00 allowing unlimited access to all ticketed venues over the weekend.
