This bicycle is one of the many items that has been given a new lease on life after a visit to the Alexandra Repair Café, which takes place monthly at the Embassy of Ideas.

By Emily Friedel

O

nce a month, dozens of people converge at the Embassy of Ideas to fix broken things, get their things fixed, watch things getting fixed or just have a chat and a cuppa. These Repair Café gatherings happen down in the industrial pocket of Alexandra’s Bayley Street inside a lovingly renovated shed brimming with the cosiness and character of handmade, recycled and upcycled items. At one Repair Café, a 13-year-old boy helped an elderly lady sync her iPhone with her iPad, an interaction that encapsulates many of the core values of the Embassy of Ideas (EOI): cultivating community, skill sharing, intergenerational relationship building, and creating an environment conducive to conversations. “All of the activities we’re doing are driven by that: bringing people together. They have elements of reuse and sustainability, but fundamentally

the Embassy of Ideas is a mechanism, it’s a space where people can gather and connect and feel a part of their community,” EOI Founder Sasha Barrow says. People walk away from the Alexandra Repair Café with all sorts of different things, such as a useable household item that would have otherwise been chucked out, a sense of satisfaction from successful restoration, newly learned skills, the warm feeling of having talked and laughed with others, or the knowledge that they’ve participated in the war on waste. With inclusivity held in high esteem at the EOI, the Repair Café ensures the little ones aren’t left out, and they get to join in with the older generations or hang out in the Tinker Kids section where some of the non-repairable items end up. “We had a DVD player that we couldn’t fix, so now that’s going to go to the Tinker Kids to open up and have a look inside,” Sasha says.

“Kids are made just as welcome as the adults. The Repair Café is a perfect example of going right across the community and having representation from pretty much any demographic you can think of,” EOI President Lisa Nolte says. Along with the Repair Café, there is a morning tea (CommuniTEA) every Friday morning, monthly potluck dinners where everyone brings food to share or a gold coin donation, and regular skill-sharing sessions where a community member takes their passion or hobby and shows others what it’s all about. “It’s all about sharing, whether it be physical things or ideas or skills,” Lisa says. Since its inception a year ago, this underpinning philosophy of connecting community and sharing, along with the atmosphere the place itself creates, has brought many people together who may not have crossed paths otherwise and given people who may be feeling Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019 – 7

isolated an avenue to bond with others. “There was somebody who doesn’t go out much, and they came along to a potluck dinner and met people through that, and they have continued to come to them, so obviously they find something there that serves its purpose for them. It was pretty special to see that happening,” EOI Committee member Michelle Sharpe says. “It is a very special place. You can see people walk in and they’re obviously comfortable straight away, it lowers the barriers, and they certainly do feel that it’s a safe place to come and they’re very, very welcome. I guess it’s the homely feel to it that has that effect.” Since Sasha first had the idea that she wanted to create a dedicated community space many years ago, the EOI has evolved into an incorporated not-for-profit social enterprise run by a volunteer committee of management. It is now a selffunded operation, relying on venue hire and memberships income, and donations of all sizes, from tools and tea bags to furniture. Its evolution is far from complete, though, and the EOI continues to morph and adapt to fill gaps and meet the needs of the community.

Above: Embassy of Ideas Founder Sasha Barrow with Committee Member Kerry McGahy in front of the tapestry wall – one of the features that gives the venue its warm, welcoming vibe. Below: Generations apart, but brought together by a technology question at the Repair Café.

“We see ourselves as enablers and facilitators. We’ve got this great space here that can be used as a base for all sorts of activities and initiatives by the community. We’re always looking at collaborations with other people and groups. It’s always better when you do things together,” Sasha says. Many local groups have taken advantage of the venue hire option to run their own events in the shed, which is decked out with a tea and coffee station, toilet, and heating and cooling for year-round comfort. Meetings, workshops, book clubs, crafting gettogethers, and musical practice sessions have all been hosted at the Embassy of Ideas to date. “We would like to see it as a valued community asset, and that people use it on a regular basis to learn, share, inspire and connect with other people. It’s all about cultivating connections and fostering community spirit,” Sasha says. The EOI Committee of Management has lots of thoughts on future directions, such as planning to get a community food garden and movie nights happening, looking for someone to get more youth initiatives up and running, and getting more sustainability projects operating out of the shed. Below: Sustainability is one of the core values of the Embassy of Ideas, so upcycled items are found throughout the shed and garden, adding to the space’s rustic charm. mention inspiring other groups to set up their own. “Every town should have one,” Lisa says. Also high on the list of their priorities is generating more community involvement and input to support their endeavours and steer the EOI towards what others feel is wanting in the area. “We do need help with either joining the committee and helping with the decision making and the running of what we’re trying to do, or running some of the events and things that we

do without being on the committee. We are always looking for volunteers,” Michelle says. And anyone who wants to contribute is more than welcome to use the ‘open gate policy’. “I always say if the gates are open, you can come in. Even if another group is here you can go in and see what’s going on if the gate is open,” Sasha says. So if you would like to find out more about the Embassy of Ideas or share your ideas, drop into one of their

regular events (or any time the gate isn’t closed), have a cuppa and start a conversation. Why not take your broken goods or handiness down to the Repair Café and see what you walk away with? aving free-range, ethically raised pigs wasn’t in the plan for Angelo and Catherine Greco when they made their escape from the city to Taggerty. They were seeking a different lifestyle for themselves and their young daughter Audrey. Angelo, a design draftsman could work from home much of the time, Catherine could pursue her love of organic fruit and vegetable gardening; and Audrey would have clean air and plenty of space to play. They had no immediate

plans for the land so let neighbours’ cattle in to graze it. They transformed a shed into a comfortable B&B to supplement their income and upgraded the existing home in keeping with their needs. Through mutual friends they had met Scotsman, Danny Dalton. Sitting looking out from the deck at Taggerty one evening, Danny, who had spent three months as a volunteer on a French pig farm, said he was thinking of getting a couple of pigs. “You know about pigs, Danny. You could put them Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019 – 11

here,” Angelo suggested. “We could do salami and have a big party with a pig on a spit.” Angelo had a friend in Gippsland who bred registered Large Black pigs. So, they set up some fences, bought two young Large Black weaners, had their party, and kept one boar to grow on. Then they bought a Berkshire sow, also a heritage breed pig. Having seen some of the unsavoury conditions in other piggeries, Danny wanted their pigs to be freerange and ethically reared, a belief shared by Angelo. “We like to keep them happy, a happy pig is a tasty pig,” Danny said with Angelo adding,“We are concerned with the welfare of the keeping pigs. We don’t agree with intensive farming and the ethics behind it.” Being excellent grazers and

foragers, Large Blacks were well suited to their needs; and Berkshires are known to be good mothers and suited to outdoor operations. They named their boar Taggart and the sow Charlene. Taggart and Charlene hit it off and soon there were piglets, 13 in fact. Subsequent litters have averaged seven to twelve. “We bought Taggart and Charlene three years ago and over our first two years we were growing out the pigs. We now have Taggart and three breeding sows Charlene, Helen and Madge, names from the Neighbours TV series. We’ve probably been doing it properly for a year. “When the pigs reach about 100 kilograms we take them to the Wangaratta abattoir since these days there are no local abattoirs. We must

use a registered butcher, so they are then delivered to Jeff at Thornton Butchers for butchering and smoking. He does a great job. We usually spend the day there and help,” Angelo adds. “You get a lot more from a pig than a cow. About 20 percent is lost in slaughtering but you can also use the trotters, hock and the head, and the bones are smaller,” Danny explains. In addition to grazing, they are fed daily with a grain and cereal mix combined with added vitamins and minerals, plus spent grain that Danny collects from a distillery. Catherine helps with the feeding and Danny comes up mid-week to deliver food, do feeding duties for a couple days and do any big jobs needing done that require both men. “This year we were offered

some local apples too. We spent about every Sunday for a month picking apples and feeding them out. The pigs loved them! “Only confined animals get diseases and need antibiotics. Because ours are free-range and have plenty of room to run around they don’t need any of that. Pigs also love to wallow and ours have places to do that. Our only disease prevention is regular worming,” Danny says. “Pigs can suffer from heat stress as they cannot sweat. In paddocks where there are no shade trees, trampolines provide shade for the pigs to lie under. The pigs can also cool off in provided wallows or mud baths. To date there have been no losses due to heat. In winter pigs also tend to share body warmth by huddling together and their houses are placed facing

Here happy, free range and ethically raised pigs are raised to produce tasty pork products. away from the weather. Our pigs are also protected by their dark skin,” Angelo explains. “A friend at the Coburg coop got us up and going. They have products from several small-scale farmers. Then we started a Facebook page, which brought in some of the locals,” they say. So Taggart’s Paddock Pork came about. They started a Community Share Agriculture (CSA) where subscribers commit to a year’s supply of pork at bimonthly intervals. They offer small (2.5kg), medium (5kg) and large (10kg) packs. Once these orders are fulfilled their produce can be offered to

other local restaurants who seem more than happy to take whatever is on offer. Orders are made via the Taggarts Paddock Pork Facebook page. In describing their pork, Danny and Angelo say “The black pig certainly makes nice bacon with extra fat as well. Our pigs are slow growing and the fat becomes more consistent the longer we grow them. We’ve had comments that it’s the best pork they’ve ever tasted: it’s sweet, not pale, it’s like a red meat, different to what you get in the markets.” “Last year we delivered orders but next time around we think we’ll have pick up

points. Danny can distribute the Melbourne orders from his cool room in Coburg and we have a cool room here,” Angelo adds. Taggart’s pork has also been very popular at the Taggerty Twilight markets and markets in Mansfield. Hopefully they can keep enough for themselves and the occasional pig on a spit celebration! To maintain their own ethical standards, remaining smallscale is essential. “At one stage we had 40 pigs but that was too many. If we go big then it would be intensive farming and we just wouldn’t have room. They’d be stuck in a paddock

and we couldn’t rotate them, so we’re now back to 22 pigs max plus Taggart and the three sows.” Other delicious pork products such as chipolata, pork and fennel sausages, ham hocks, smoked hams and amazing bacon are available at times at local markets but offered first to their CSA clients. As yet they don’t have the infrastructure to produce salami in keeping with health and safety guidelines. However, they do have a long-term goal to be able to offer cured meat. Find out more about Taggart’s Paddock Pork on their Facebook page. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019 – 13

he rugged beauty of our high country is a magnet for visitors. But, it is not unusual to hear that someone has gone missing or been injured in rough, challenging and often unfamiliar terrain. When time is of the essence and the elements are against a standard rescue bid, it may be the special skills of an elite medical team that can ensure a happy outcome. The most experienced of bushwalkers, climbers and regular visitors to our high country regions knows that an important part of their ‘survival kit’ is a healthy dose of respect for the environment.

head in . . . but, it will all hinge on accessibility and the weather. If air and ground crews are brought to a halt, it may take days for conditions to improve. Cassie Carr or one of her colleagues may already have started to walk in and, whether it is snowing or in extreme summer heat, she could be the first welcome sight for an injured or ill patient.

Even the best of them can suffer an unexpected injury or illness, or succumb to climatic extremes.

Part of an elite team of Ambulance Victoria Wilderness Response paramedics, Cassie has been specially selected and trained to not only cope with the elements and know how to survive, but she is effectively carrying everything needed for a medical first responder on her back.

It requires a multi-agency response to get the help to where it is needed. Search helicopters sweep overhead, police and volunteers scour a search zone on foot, 4WD’s

Cassie grew up in the Kinglake Ranges, so extreme bush terrain is not alien to her, and she works as a full-time general Ambulance Victoria paramedic.

But, for this squad, the ‘ambulance’ is their own two legs and finely honed skills for traversing the bush to reach the target. The wilderness rescue squad recently completed training in the Grampians National Park. On top of their lengthy paramedic training, they have had to nail map and compass navigation, survival shelter and camping skills, how to read weather patterns, understanding different environments and caring for people for extended periods, until other rescuers can get in. On top of medical and trauma equipment, they are carrying a tent, sleeping bag, Bothy bag (a compact emergency shelter), foam mat, cooking equipment, food and water, compass, map, folding knife, whistle/ flint, cord, head torch, firelighters and radio/GPS. Cassie and her colleagues are helping to make our rugged landscapes a safer place to enjoy. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019 – 15

n June 22 this year, the Upper Goulburn Intrepid Landcare Tribe got together for their first event. Blessed with winter sunshine, a group of young adults from the Tribe joined the Yea River Catchment Landcare Group for a morning of understorey shrub planting. After helping put around 400 plants in the ground, the Tribe explored Gooram Falls near Merton and then went onto a bonfire with the Yellow Creek – Dairy Creek Landcare Group to celebrate the winter solstice.

The Upper Goulburn Intrepid Landcare Tribe getting the last of the 400 plants in the ground at the historic Yea Butter Factory. Intrepid Landcare is a nationwide movement that was started by National Young Landcare Ambassadors, Megan Rowlatt and Naomi Edwards, in 2015 to get more people aged between 18 and 35 involved in Landcare. At its heart, Intrepid Landcare is about doing “stuff that matters” (which can be pretty much anything that is meaningful and makes a difference) while incorporating elements of fun and adventure that appeal to and benefit young adults. The Upper Goulburn Intrepid Landcare Tribe was started by Annette Cavanagh, 25, and Jess Robinson, 27, who met while studying environmental science at uni. A couple of years ago, Annette became president of the Yellow Creek – Dairy Creek Landcare Group and, being the youngest person there, she was told about 18 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019

Intrepid Landcare. After some research and getting in touch with Megan Rowlatt and Naomi Edwards, Annette attended a leadership retreat in 2018 to learn how to set up a Landcare Tribe. Jess, who has always had a passion for the environment and done a few rounds with the Green Army, was quick to jump on board. “I moved up here from Melbourne eight years ago, and I noticed there’s a bit of a lack of opportunities for people our age, so when Annette mentioned to me there was this thing called Intrepid Landcare, I got really excited about it,” Jess says. Then, on June 2 this year, Annette and Jess hosted an information session at Yea Wetlands to gauge interest in a local Tribe. To their delight, eight other people rocked up, coming from locations as far as Melbourne and Seymour.

“It was really successful, everyone was enthusiastic to start up a Tribe in our area,” Annette says. In that first meeting, there was plenty of brainstorming about what the group could do to combine enjoyable and exciting activities with Landcare work – “adventure with purpose”. For example, doing a hike and picking up rubbish along the way, or spending a morning on an animal monitoring project then going for a bike ride along the Rail Trail in the afternoon. “It’s not just an environmental thing – there is that Landcare element, of course, but there’s also the social part of it, reducing the isolation of young adults in our community and providing another platform for young adults to connect on,” Annette says. Another important role for the Upper Goulburn

Intrepid Landcare Tribe is to inject some youth and vitality into the existing Upper Goulburn Landcare Network, and Annette says they aim to work closely with other Landcare groups in the area to not only ensure the Landcare movement continues with strength into the next generation but also to provide practical assistance. “The main reason that Intrepid Landcare was formed in the first place is because existing Landcare groups have very little young adult involvement, and we’ll be able to help out with activities like weed control on the sides of hills and things like that older people might not be physically able to do,” Annette says. The Tribe’s first event ticked all the boxes in terms of forging relationships with existing Landcare Groups, doing stuff that matters, and

throwing some fun into the mix. “I think our first event achieved our goals because we were able to do our bit for the environment by planting native vegetation and providing habitat for native species. We were also doing something meaningful by helping our community and providing assistance

to locals. Exploring the falls that none of us had seen before was a great adventure, and we had many laughs trying to figure out where they were. To cap it off, the bonfire was great fun with some guitar playing and singing, marshmallow cooking, and lots of stories. It was a fantastic all-round day,” Annette says.

The day fuelled excitement about future events, and the Tribe hopes more young people will join them at upcoming events – including a snow day in September – to share the satisfaction of driving positive change while having a good time. “I think it’s important to get young people out there caring about our future, and

what’s important to us and future generations,” Jess says. For more information on Upper Goulburn Intrepid Landcare go to their Facebook page www.facebook. com/ UpperGoulburn IntrepidLandcare or contact Annette 0488 152 382 a.m.cavanagh@outlook. com.au

One of the aims of the Upper Goulburn Intrepid Landcare Tribe is to allow young people an opportunity to connect while “doing stuff that matters”.

rom colourful cartoon characters to multitiered wedding cakes slathered in sophistication, Pagan McCarthy is a wizard when it comes to making edible art.

Pagan started decorating cakes five years ago when she tried to order a cake for her father’s 60th birthday. The cake decorator she contacted was unavailable, so Pagan decided she’d do it herself.

“I bought some fondant and had a go. I had so much fun – I was up until about one in the morning,” she says.

Pagan’s family is into vintage cars and hot rods, so for her dad’s big day, she made him a hot-rod-themed cake in his

herself. She believes the cake should taste as good as it looks, so works hard to ensure whatever she creates is something she’d happily eat herself.

In the years since making her dad’s hot rod cake, she says she has come a long way.

The decorating side of things, which she calls “the fun part”, can take up to five hours and may require some problem solving to get just the right effect. For example, when she was asked to make a realistic fish cake, she relied on her experience airbrushing designs on cars.

“A picture of my dad’s cake popped up on my Facebook recently, and I thought, ‘Oh my god it’s terrible!’ but you’ve got to start somewhere, and I’ve definitely refined things since then.” Now she makes complicated designs – from 3D helicopter cakes to hamburger-shaped cakes with the lot – tackling any brief she is sent, no matter how daunting it may seem.

“I airbrushed it with food dye. So I have dragged my airbrush into the kitchen, which is something I never thought I’d do.”

“I’m often lying in bed at night thinking, ok tomorrow I’m going to attempt this, and if I get really stuck, the internet’s fantastic,” she says.

Pagan has also teamed up with photographer friend Brooke Sheridan from BLS Photography to do ‘cake smash’ photo shoots where a baby is given a mock cake decorated with real icing and allowed to go wild with it, usually for a first birthday.

Pagan makes her cakes from scratch, sourcing all the ingredients and baking them

The results of cake smash sessions are fun, spontaneous images of an

icing-covered infant, which are often used for birthday invitations. Although Pagan was surprised when she had to encourage her own daughter, who is always eying off the cakes, to get stuck into a mound of swirly, pastel pink icing. “When we put it in front of her, we expected her to just go for it, because she’s always looking at these cakes that I make and reaching out for them, but she didn’t want to touch it, so we had to push her hands in and wipe icing on her,” Pagan says. In the end, though, the photos show that little Matilda was pretty happy to get her hands on one of

mum’s cakes at last. The reactions to her cakes from infants and adults alike make all the late-night thinking and hours of work highly rewarding, Pagan says, even if her creations are destined to be cut up and eaten (or mashed up by tiny hands). “I love that it’s enjoyed for a moment and then it’s gone. I also love when people send me photos of whoever the cake was for, seeing their faces and how surprised they were, that totally makes my day. I just love the happiness it brings people.”

From birthdays to ‘cake smash’ shoots (in this case, starring Pagan’s daughter Matilda) to giving the term ‘fish cake’ new meaning, Pagan’s cake decorating is endlessly versatile.

ocated in the foothills of the Victorian High Country, the Spring Fair and Open Day have held pride of place on the Mansfield Steiner School’s annual calendar for over 30 years. Founded in 1986, the school offers an enlivened form of education, its rich aesthetic curriculum fosters a love of learning and produces strong, articulate and empathetic individuals who are capable of making the world a better place. On Saturday 26 October Mansfield Steiner School will host one of its biggest celebrations yet, with the 2019 Spring Fair and Open Day marking the school’s official celebration of 100 years of Waldorf (Steiner) education. Mansfield Steiner School is inviting the whole community to join in a day of

celebration, beginning with their Welcome to Spring Fair Maypole Ceremony at 10am sharp. The beautiful grounds will be transformed into a vibrant marketplace of food, craft and entertainment with activities for all ages. An extraordinarily magical atmosphere is created in the Morning Star and Rosa Mundi gardens. Young children will delight in the wonders of the Rainbow Tent, The Grotto, The Gumboot Café, gem fossicking, the fishing game and face painting; a myriad of little treasures and activities set to capture the imaginations of little people. While the older children enjoy candle dipping, boat, sword and shield making, a book stall and garland and wand making. Games are held on the oval for all ages and interests.

For adults there will be demonstrations of hand crafts, Cow Lotto, a succulent and plant stall, fresh produce stall and a clothing and footwear stall– with an emphasis on vintage goods. Nutritious, organic, wholesome food is always an outstanding feature of the fair. This year’s Open Day will see the return of the Song Writing Competition. Mansfield Steiner encourages all promising young musicians from near and far to create and perform their very own compositions. Entries are via the school’s website. The finalists will be invited to perform on centre stage in the afternoon, and their efforts will be judged by music industry specialists. Prizes include a recording package at Summit View Sound studio and a

mentorship session to help further your music career aspirations. Mansfield Steiner School offers Playgroup to Year 11 and 12 with the addition of the International Baccalaureate Diploma in 2020 (pending registration). Class teachers will be available at Open Day to answer questions and to share their passion for teaching and learning. Tour through the classrooms to explore the depth and beauty of the student’s work, as it develops through the years. Mansfield Steiner School nurtures gratitude, fosters an appreciation for the world by using natural materials and promotes sustainable practices in all that they do. Their teaching incorporates indigenous perspectives, and a commitment to ongoing process of reconciliation.

ea Rotary Club has organised a Garden Expo for the weekend of Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September, from 9am to 3pm each day. This is just the time of year when interested gardeners are busy preparing their gardens for spring colour. The Expo provides an opportunity to view a host of garden-related products at the Yea Saleyards site (Flat Lead Rd), just off the Yea – Whittlesea Road a few kilometres on the south side of Yea. The site is flat, sealed and easily accessible for everyone.

garden tools and equipment, garden art and ornaments, compost, fertilisers and more. The Australian made RAT barrow (ride on, articulated tipping barrow) was a big hit with visitors as were the quirky horse shoe garden sculptures, by local Darryl Callander and which can be made to order. There was a secondhand

book stall of preloved gardening books as well as a plant creche where purchases could be left until ready for pick up on departure. This year more vendors will be on site as the Expo is continuing to grow. The popular speaker program, featuring a range of topics

from bee keeping, pruning and more will again be available over the two days, plus a Stihl demonstration at 10am each day. An opportunity for visitors to both rest and learn! Find out more on the website (www.yeagardenexpo.com. au) or keep up to date via Facebook (Yea Garden Expo) or Instagram (yeagardenexpo).

Last year, the third for the Expo, over 2500 enthusiastic visitors came from all over Victoria to take advantage of the $7 entry fee, free parking, a wide range of goods and services, and a plentiful supply of food and drinks, much of it homemade. Alexandra & District Open gardens has been a popular annual event for the past 29 years, and each year the number of visitors that attend the weekend has grown significantly. It is not uncommon for a visitor to the gardens to be so inspired that they include a visit to the local nursery centre to purchase that ‘particular’ plant that they now want in their own garden. Have a good day out: Spring is at its very peak

at the end of October, so each of the ten gardens is brimming with blooms galore. Why not pack the kids, your friends, your mother-in-law, or your loved one and head out for a day in beautiful surrounds? Maybe pack yourself a picnic and enjoy a lunch under a shady garden tree, or beside a pond, or simply settle onto one of the beautiful green lawns. Gardens range from town gardens, all with vastly different styles, to large country gardens with stunning views of this beautiful part of Victoria. Roses grow exceptionally well in the Yea district and form an exuberant backdrop to the magnificent display of perennials, specialist collections and other plants at their best at this time of the year. Many outstanding mature trees frame the gardens and views to

complement the beauty within. All country gardens are north of Yea township this year in the Upper Goulburn River Valley, consequently you will experience completely different views travelling between gardens. Several of the country gardens are only a few years old, but the owners have established some stunning settings for you to enjoy. Most will love the Wilson garden in Yea township where the flair of the owners has created a fascinating small garden and you will need sharp eyes to find the many quirky features. ave fun meeting the animals at Mansfield Zoo – or even camp overnight if you dare. If you love animals and family fun, there is plenty to enjoy at Mansfield Zoo. The Meerkats have arrived too, adding to the excitement! The Zoo features a large menagerie of animals from across Australia and around the world, including two rare white lions, two tawny lions, monkeys (capuchins, marmosets, rhesus and bonnet), deer, camels, bison, alligator, wombats and much more. The Zoo Keeper Feeding Tour is a great time to be at Mansfield Zoo. The four lions are fed at 1.30pm each weekend and Victorian school and public holidays, followed by feeding of the Meerkat Mob. Take the opportunity to pat one of the friendly dingoes who walk around with a keeper while the lions are being fed. You can celebrate a memorable New Year’s Eve with lion feeding at 7.30pm and the Zoo open until 10.00pm – great for families looking for something different. You can also feed most of the animals by hand every day while you wander the expansive grounds. A small spade is provided to feed the more gregarious animals, like the camels, who will run off with the spade if they can. There are sambar and fallow deer as well as kangaroos roaming the grounds with you, along with guinea fowl and peacocks. Bring a picnic lunch or use the free barbeques, just watch that the deer don’t steal your food from you. For the more adventurous, there’s nothing like trying to sleep to the sound of the lion’s roar. Overnight campers are welcome from September 1 to May 31 each season, but you do need to book a spot. Bring your own gear and set yourself up for a camping trip with a difference and take the opportunity to roam the zoo after hours. The Mansfield Zoo is open every day from 10am to 6pm (10pm on N.Y.E.) and is closed on Christmas Day only. More information is available on the website, www.mansfieldzoo.com.au, Facebook page facebook.com/mansfieldzoo, or call the office on 03 5777 3576. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019 – 39

ou won’t find it listed as an annual ‘must do’ in the standard tourist guides. But, anyone can join in and as magical experiences go, it’s up there, especially if you care about one of our most iconic native birds. The catch is you will have to be out in the bush before daybreak in the middle of winter and for the past 32 years more than 400 people have rugged up, been expertly briefed by Parks Victoria rangers, and hunkered down in the Kinglake National Park to wait and listen. Some have camped overnight, while others are locals or have come from all directions to be a part of it. We have been briefed the day before – crash-coursed in how to read a compass, played recordings of our ‘quarry’, familiarised with the team leaders – and checked out where we will be stationed before day breaks on a freezing bush track. This effort – while requiring plenty of thermal layers – will rely on our ears.

On a mid-July Sunday morning, while the rest of the ranges sleeps, we head out and wait for male lyrebirds to let rip with their distinctive call and consolidate their breeding territory. This iconic, protected native bird might be regarded as relatively common in the wet, forested areas of mid to northern Victoria, but they are elusive creatures – easier heard than sighted. At the height of the breeding season, while they don’t keep our civilised hours, we are hoping that plenty of them will be full of macho beans in designated gullies at daybreak. Their fame as mimics – copying the sounds of everything from chainsaws, cars and barking dogs – won’t get in the way while they are in girl-lyrebirdattracting-mode as they stick to their original songbook. But, like many of our native species, they face their own set of challenges – human encroachment into their territory is a major one. The cats and dogs that take up residence with their owners and the invasion of pests such as foxes that find these ground-dwellers easy prey.

Burgeoning deer populations indiscriminately graze through their preferred gullies. In Kinglake’s case, the catastrophic 2009 bushfires exacted a heavy toll. On an icy, blustery Sunday, our little ‘citizen science’ group is on the Mount Jerusalem track in the Kinglake National Park. An occasional glimpse of Melbourne city’s pre-dawn lights seems somehow out of place. They twinkle through ghostly outlines of dead, fire victim trees – strangely white in the gloom. Pinpricks of torchlight move in the distance as we ring the gully, hunker down and wait. The same is happening in 22 locations around the dark park, with 26 people quietly getting into place. Some have headed for Jehosaphat Gully, others are at Masons Falls or on the Everard Track. Parks Victoria Senior Ranger and team leader, Trevor Graham, along with Ranger, Kim Hunter, are keeping tabs on us and our safety - slips, trips, falling branches and even hungry leeches are very possible in the wet, dark environment.

While ‘bush chook’ is often used as a colloquial expression for emus, the lyrebirds have acquired the nickname because of their scratching habit and they have been known to roost in trees. According to the Aboriginal dreamtime story, the Galbuyn (lyrebird) was the first creature to be created by Baiame the Sky Hero/Sky father. The lyrebird started off as a very dull brown bird and Baiame felt so sorry for it, he decided to give it colour. Baiame proceeded to crush blue and white stones to paint the bird’s gorgeous plumage. As a special gift for being the first creature, Baiame gave the lyrebird the ability to dance and mimic everything it heard, which no other bird would be able to do. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019 – 41

Camille Cain and her granddaughter, Indigo Skinner, braved the winter chill to take part in the lyrebird survey. In spite of the cold, it is strangely exciting to be in the silent bush. The annual lyrebird count is not a new concept. It was the foresight originally of concerned residents around the Sherbooke Forest in the Dandenongs who formed a ‘friends’ group when they saw the impact of urban development more than 40 years ago. A ‘friends’ of the Kinglake National Park followed 32 years ago when Eltham resident, Lawrie Rigg, saw the need, adopted the Sherbrooke model and linked with Parks Victoria. Lawrie hasn’t missed a year of leading monitoring groups since, including the July after Black Saturday. Despite the level of 42 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019

destruction, Lawrie says, to discover birds that had somehow miraculously survived was a special moment.

whimper than a sunny bang and we swing into action for an hour, when the birds will oblige and call through the gully.

Ten years on and we are pinpointing the birds’ calls on our compasses and recording them on a log. Parks Victoria staff cannot only track where numbers may have dropped or increased, but determine where they may need to carry out vital work, such as pest eradication programs.

As the team leaders gather us up, everyone wants to stay longer – they’re hooked.

But, they constantly need new monitoring recruits to get out of a warm bed and bolster the ranks at this specific time of the year and within a small window of opportunity. On this particular Sunday morning, daybreak arrives more with an overcast

We head back to the Parks Victoria offices, excitedly swapping our results and thawing frozen faces and fingers. The rangers and staff were there before we headed out, have ferried people into 4WD tracks and have dashed back to man the barbecue for a welcome hot breakfast. There is a wonderful sense of community while we compare our experiences with new friends and acknowledge those who have continued to lead,

mentor and inspire new ‘recruits’. A common comment is that the whole exercise has been a touch of ‘magic’ – whether it’s a first time experiencing the park waking up, hearing these beautiful creatures calling, or a combination of the two. There is an enormous sense of achievement that people from around the state and locals alike care so much about our natural zones and the creatures that call them home. The survey will occur again in July next year and Parks Victoria will flag the dates (always weather dependent) if you fancy signing on and contributing to an effort that helps keep our lyrebirds safe and thriving.

here is no doubt today’s fast paced life comes with quite a few challenges and stresses, and there is no evidence that they are reducing. As a consequence, more and more people in the community are actively searching for deeper ways to improve their health and wellbeing. Which is why people are increasingly turning to established and well-

founded alternative therapies. Reiki is one of these that can provide a solution. Reiki is a holistic therapy which is gaining more acceptance and recognition for the physical and emotional benefits it can provide. It is one of the most accessed forms of complementary medicine patients are seeking whilst going through chemotherapy. There are

now hospitals and palliative care centres throughout Australia that offer Reiki to patients to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy and improve their quality of life. Reiki is a healing modality which is Japanese in origin that was founded in the early twentieth century by Mikao Usui. Rei means universal life force or essence and Ki is the energy or Chi, the energy that flows through all living things.

It is a simple yet profound method to help heal the mind, body and spirit into a state of wholeness. Reiki is a form of energy healing where the life force is accessed through a handson approach. The system of Reiki promotes the body’s own healing response. It raises body awareness, balances and restores and is perfect for reducing stress. From its Japanese origins, Reiki has spread as a practice Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019 – 45

throughout the world. As it has been passed on from master to student, all Reiki practitioners should be able to trace their lineage back to Mr Usui. Murrindindi Shire has an established and experienced Reiki practitioner in Karli Chase who earlier this year opened her practice Reiki Insight at 7 The Semi Circle in Yea. Karli has been practicing Reiki for twenty years, attaining the level of Reiki Master in 2000, she is a full member of Reiki Australia and provides a professional and caring practice. “My goal,” she says, “is to promote Reiki as a healing modality, to raise awareness, dispel any misconceptions

and to make it accessible to everyone”. Karli divides Reiki into the physical, mental and the emotional benefits to health. The physical benefits of Reiki • Relieves and releases pain • Relaxes muscle tension • Increases energy • Relieves fatigue • Strengthens the natural healing process • Promotes sleep • Clears toxins • Balances energies The mental and emotional benefits of Reiki • Relaxes the body and mind • Promotes a feeling of calmness and wellbeing • Reduces long held stress • Helps to unlock supressed

feelings • Soothes emotional distress • Promotes a peaceful and positive outlook Reiki consists of light noninvasive touch with the practitioner’s hands placed and held on a series of positions starting at the head then progressing to the front and back of the body, legs and finishing with the soles of the feet. Clients typically feel heat from the practitioner’s hands and experience deep relaxation. Karli can give your body the language it understands to help you achieve a higher level of wellbeing. “There are many ways to heal the mind, body and spirit, so if you are seeking more calm

Many of Bruno’s whimsical characters spring directly from his imagination. “I do have my own little world; I just close my eyes and visualise,” he says.

ucked away in a parcel of Marysville’s temperate rainforest, Bruno Torfs has created a whimsical garden of characters that dwell among the trees and at the river’s edge. Mythical creatures, iconic figures plucked from the pages of literary classics, and many more born in Bruno’s imagination are all brought to life in ceramic sculptures that invite visitors to step into another world. Bruno’s sculptures are wonderfully expressive and possess a relatable quality that beckons the inner child – walking through the garden and finding all its hidden treasures is much like being transported into the heart of a fairytale. Bruno credits growing up in South America for the playful nature of his creations and their ability to reach even those who don’t think they’re interested in art.

The plants and other features of the garden are an integral part of Bruno’s art. “Portraits always fascinated me, and combining them with nature and animals, bringing in some natural elements like tree trunks and water features,” he says.

Bruno made a Waterhouse-inspired sculpture of the Lady of Shalott, including the boat in which she sits, at the suggestion of his daughter. This was one of the many sculptures that required restoration after the Black Saturday fires. 50 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019

After moving to Belgium with his family at the age of 15, Bruno had a chance encounter that sparked his fascination with ceramics. “A young sculptor moved into one of the rooms in the same building where I was working as a signwriter, and by looking at what he was doing something twigged in me: clay. It was very inspiring. Before that I was not interested in sculpture, it never appealed to me, but his work was something different. One day he went on holidays for four days, and I asked him if I could use his studio and try clay. When he came back, I had two life-size sculptures ready.” Discovering his affinity for sculpting with clay was the

catalyst for Bruno’s decision to pursue a professional art career – a decision that even his father, a professional portrait artist, wasn’t sold on. Bruno, however, had made up his mind and wasn’t so easily deterred. “I started travelling the world and sketching, and when I returned home, I’d create sculptures or do oil paintings. I thought of trying an exhibition which went really well for the first time, so I did another one and just kept going.” A pivotal point in Bruno’s career was securing his patch of paradise in Marysville where he could embed his art. As Bruno describes it, fate had a strong hand in how it all played out. “I had a very clear vision when I was 14 years old, still in South America, and I wrote down in my diary that one day I would end up living in Australia in this little village surrounded by mountains, near open space – the oval there – and a river at the back of the property. “At first I thought we would never find this place because there is such a vast area of mountains in Australia, but after two and a half hours of driving from Melbourne, we ended up here in Marysville, which was the first place we stopped. The owners of the property could not sell it for two years, and the price dropped three days before we arrived so we could afford it. It was like it was waiting for us.” Then the process of materialising his mind’s fantasy world began, and Bruno set about moulding his little slice of forest into a sculpture garden alongside

Bruno and wife, Christina, with a work-in-progress in Bruno’s studio, which visitors walk through on their way from the gallery to the garden. a gallery filled with his paintings. Since the sculpture garden and gallery opened to the public over 20 years ago, people have come from all over the world to experience Bruno’s magical world, and it is one of the Experience Oz

website’s Top 100 Bucket List attractions in Victoria. Today, there are over 150 sculptures in the garden, including many of the original ones that were demolished by the Black Saturday fires. Among the restored

sculptures is a favourite of many longtime fans of Bruno’s work: The Six Children. This particular artwork touched one Healesville man so deeply that when he found out it had been smashed to smithereens by a falling tree,

he offered to help rebuild it – a task Bruno thought might not be feasible at first. “I’m looking at this sculpture in hundreds of little pieces and thinking it has gone. I said for the moment I have got other things to do, and I do not think it’s possible to Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2019 – 51

A favourite among Bruno’s fans, The Six Children was severely damaged in the Black Saturday fires and then rebuilt with the help of a long-time admirer of the sculpture garden. fix the sculpture, this thing is so badly damaged, but if you want, we can put all the pieces in a box, and you can take it home and try joining the pieces. He was really excited. “I think together with his wife he must have spent three weeks day and night trying to solve the puzzle, and he returned with all these big pieces that he had

joined together. I thought, ‘Wow this is amazing, and I think we can bring it all back by making some new parts.’ It inspired me to do all the others that were so badly damaged; he gave me hope that we can bring them back.” After replanting the garden, restoring sculptures and rebuilding the gallery, Bruno has reinvigorated his

creation with many new artworks that stand proudly among the original ones. With his wife, Christina, who is an accomplished musician, Bruno is now adding their own instrumental compositions to further enhance the experience of exploring the garden. Broadening the artistic scope of the sculpture garden by making music is a step Bruno

has long wanted to take and a sign that even the setback of the fires wasn’t enough to stop the evolution of his life’s passion and the joy he derives from it. “I can’t see the day that I will stop creating here; for it’s just so much fun.” For more information on Bruno’s Art & Sculpture Garden go to brunosart.com

n Saturday 12 October this year, quilters from all around Victoria will gather in the Alexandra Secondary College hall. The hall will be transformed into a busy sewing and crafting venue, and attendees will receive a “goodies” bag containing local produce and homemade gifts upon arrival. Alexandra Quilters are very excited to have Jennifer Kingwell from Amitie Textiles in Torquay as one of the guest speakers at the gathering. Jennifer designs quilts as well as her own fabric, and hearing of her journey into the world of quilting promises to be fascinating. The other guest speaker is Maree from Maree St Clair Quilts, and attendees can also look forward to learning about her quilting history. There will be pop-up stores in the hall for hours of pleasure poring over fabrics, books and kits – all in the name of quilting! Examples of quilts made by talented local quilters will be on display around the hall, several of which have won prizes at Showcase in the past. There will be plenty of fun and games with lucky door prizes and raffles. A substantial morning and afternoon tea will be supplied. The Alexandra Quilters is a very active group that always welcomes new members to any of their meetings to share in the joy that is quilting! The Alexandra Quilters’ main meeting and get-together is held on the first Saturday of the month at the RSL Hall. They also meet and sew and have fun at other times throughout the month at various venues around the district.
