rant St. Grocer combines a local, seasonal food philosophy with international flavours and influences. Their café and produce store is the perfect stop for anyone wanting a taste of the Murrindindi Shire or something from much further afield. And, in line with their combination of local food and global inspiration, the Grant St. Grocer team welcomes people from near and far. Customer service is all about local knowledge and knowledge of the locals. “It’s a love of being a part

of the community. It’s that familiarity – people coming in that we know, we know what they drink, what they like to eat, what they might like to try that’s new. And for people from out of town, asking where they’re from and finding out a little bit more about them and what they’re looking for in the area, providing a bit of tourist information as well. A lot of our staff have lived here all their lives, so they know the area like the backs of their hands,” owner Lisa Harding says. Lisa and her husband, Alan, met while working in hospitality in Melbourne. Then, after working together

in Lorne, they travelled to Canada to work for a year. This is where Alan, who began working as a chef straight after high school, collected much of his knowledge of food from other cultures. “Alan learned a lot of what he knows in that year at Chateau Whistler from a lot of the other international chefs. There was a Sri Lankan chef that he worked with who he learned a bit about the curry side of things from. There was a Japanese chef there who was amazing, and he learned a lot of his sushimaking and Japanese cuisine skills from that chef. Plus all the knowledge from the Canadian side of it,” Lisa says. Alan has also added to his diverse culinary repertoire by picking up bits and pieces 14 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2021

“The American barbecue style he loves cooking is nothing that he’s ever been taught before in a restaurant; he’s wanted to find out more about it so researched it and tried different techniques and taught himself.” Lisa also started in hospitality young, working at Hungry Jack’s while still at school, and developed her management and customer service skills working at five-star establishments in Australia and abroad. “With different jobs, I transitioned in and out of the restaurant side of things to more of the front desk and reception side. I’ve had other jobs – I taught piano for a while – but I’ve always come back to hospitality because

it’s what I know and what I love. There’s nothing else I’d rather be doing,” she says. After moving to Alexandra, Alan’s and Lisa’s complementary abilities came together in 2014 to start Grant St. Grocer. Alan’s curries had been a hit at local school fetes, and this sowed the seeds for the business. “We came up with the idea of doing the take-home meals and having them in a shop where we could do the local produce as well, to have everything that’s available in the area in the one spot because there wasn’t anything else like it in Alex,” Lisa says. They started small with a little shop that could seat a handful of people, but customer demand outgrew the space. So at the end of

Coffee is one of life’s simple pleasures, and the Grant St. Grocer team pride themselves on providing patrons with outstanding coffee and outstanding service to go with it. 2018, they “bit the bullet” and bought larger premises further up Grant Street. “We got to start from scratch and build something that we really wanted. We had more seats, more produce, and a bigger kitchen – more space for all those things we’d been cramming into the little shop.” Lisa and Alan have put all that extra room to good use. Along with their staples – great coffee, pre-prepared meals, local produce – they have recently expanded their

their sweet treat selection. And this spring, Alan will be cooking up a storm in the kitchen with the return of their monthly themed dinners.

They are also putting their bigger kitchen to good use. Their high-quality take-home meals – ranging from spicy curries to French casseroles – are now available wholesale for businesses wishing to join the Eildon Service Station in selling them. They have also recently employed a pastry chef to enhance

“We were doing a monthly event dinner, which were around-the-world dinners, so there was a different country every month. And then we stopped with COVID. We’re just starting again and we’re going to go back to doing a monthly dinner, whether that’s a dinner-of-the-world or varying it up and just

At Dindi Bee Supplies in Alexandra, Liz Baker caters to beekeepers and bee lovers alike. She stocks (or can get in) all the necessary beekeeping equipment, as well as reference books, bee-related gifts and local honey, offering taste testing for those interested in learning more about the flavours distinguishing honey of different origins. Wherever possible, Liz stocks Australian made and local products.

uring spring, honeybees emerge from the hive with renewed vigour, taking advantage of the warm sunshine and abundant blossoms. Spring is also the time when beekeepers dust off their smokers and don their veils to get back to work. And for those who are keen but haven’t yet started their beekeeping adventure, spring is the ideal time to take the plunge.

Luckily, both experienced and novice beekeepers in the Murrindindi Shire now have a local shop to stock up on equipment: Dindi Bee Supplies in Alexandra. Owner Liz Baker says it’s also a place for those who are curious or enthusiastic about these little pollinators. “People can just come in and talk about bees or honey. It’s good fun.” Liz is just happy following her beekeeping passion and sharing knowledge

After working for many years in OH&S, Liz was made redundant and then had a new job fall through last year when the pandemic struck. But it seems this string of bad luck happened at the right time to go in a completely different direction and start the beekeeping supplies venture. “I was sitting at home thinking, ‘This is nuts. I’m not going to sit here and do nothing.’ I’d had this crazy idea of a beekeeping shop, 18 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2021

so I thought, ‘Why not have a go?’ This little shop had just become vacant because Nanny Jan had moved to a bigger premises across the road, so I came to have a look, and when I realised that the tiles on the outside were in the shape of honeycomb, I thought that must be a sign,” Liz says.

“For some people, COVID gave them the time and motivation to take up beekeeping. With all the restrictions on shopping and the inability to go out as much, people have thought more about growing their own food, shopping local, and hobbies around the home.”

“It all happened very fast. We opened on the June long weekend during lockdown and pretty soon had people coming in from places like Shepparton and Marysville because I was open, and they couldn’t go to Melbourne.”

This spring, as the bees and beekeepers get more active, Liz will be ready with all the essential beekeeping gear required for the two species to work together: hives, frames, protective clothing, smokers, and more.

The shop is also stocked with beekeeping books and plenty of information on different hive types, including a display Kenyan top bar hive that often sits out the front, intriguing passers-by. Of course, for those who are hoping to begin beekeeping for the first time this spring, Liz has everything they need, including some sound advice: “Find out as much as you can before you get bees. See if you can go and hang out with a beekeeper when

Activity at the hive entrance, showing a bee with her pollen sacs fully loaded with orange pollen. Photo courtesy Dindi Bee Supplies.

they do a hive inspection and they can tell you what they’re looking at. That way, you also get the experience of being surrounded by buzzing bees, and if it freaks you out, then beekeeping’s probably not for you. The more information you have, the better.” There is also now a local beekeeping Facebook Group for apiarists of all descriptions to connect with and learn from one another. For newbies who don’t already know a beekeeper, this may be a place to find someone who can help them test out whether a beekeeping hobby is for them with some hands-on experience – something Liz

wishes she’d had more of when she started. “When I first got my bees, it was a real initiation by fire. I had to work it out as I went along, and I was using Facebook beekeeping groups and my manual to try and learn, but I didn’t know any other beekeepers in Eildon, so I was really on my own. It is the hard way to do it.” While her self-taught skills may have made for an interesting start to beekeeping life, Liz is now capable of taking on complex jobs such as removing colonies that have moved into people’s wall cavities.

This is one of the services she offers, along with the more straightforward one of capturing a swarm – something that people are more likely to see in their backyards or around town as the weather warms up. “There’s a difference between a swarm, which is a cluster of bees hanging on a bush or a tree or something, and bees that have moved into your wall. People have asked me to come out and get a swarm of bees, and I’ve found a very well established beehive in a wall – that means a cutout, which means cutting the wall open and cutting the comb out and it’s quite a different

thing to swarm catching.” Clearly, Liz has come a long way with her beekeeping journey, and now she is more than happy to point others in the right direction as they navigate theirs. So, whether you’re after information, the tools of the trade or just a chinwag about the interesting habits of our honey-making mates, you can drop in to Dindi Bee Supplies this spring for all your needs. Superb lyrebird. Photo www.flickr.com/photos/birdbrian/9319608165

By Darcy French

W

hat comes to mind when you think about the superb lyrebird? It’s likely their amazing ability to mimic sounds in their environment. From renditions of kookaburras to cockatoos and even chainsaws, lyrebirds are the master songbirds of the bush. Once, while listening to a lyrebird’s medley, I’m quite sure I heard the snort of a pig, and videos abound online of other weird and wacky imitations. But what you might not know is that the lyrebird’s magic goes well beyond its singing. They are also worldclass composters, impressive dancers, and amongst the most intelligent animals found in the Australian bush.

So, with lyrebird mating season in full swing in July (which is when their singing is at its most impressive), I decided there would be no better time to learn a little more about one of Murrindindi’s most special inhabitants. Luckily, many of the world’s premier lyrebirdspotting locations are right on our doorstep in the Kinglake Ranges, only one hour from Melbourne. So, with this in mind, I headed out in pouring June rain to see what I could find. The rain is absolutely pouring down, and I’m thinking maybe this was a silly idea after all. I must be the only person out in the National Park today; even the birds seem to have called it quits. The only sound I hear is the thrum of rain hitting

the trees and tumbling down to the rainforest floor below. But I turn a corner, and suddenly a lyrebird is in front of me. I freeze. It looks in my direction, although I’m not sure if it sees me. I definitely see it. A compact black body dwarfed by the long and elegant tail. This bird is a male and carries a bunch of twigs in his mouth, although I’m not sure why. I later learn that the male uses these sticks to construct a mound. High upon this mound, he patrols, performing his melody and waving his impressive tail feathers around, hoping his performance will capture the attention of a lady friend. My lyrebird friend must be doing something right because no more than 20 seconds after he crosses

my path, a female emerges, heading in the same direction. The forest is so wet that both birds stop on the cleared path to fluff their feathers and shake off some moisture. Such is life in winter in Kinglake. Why lyrebirds choose the coldest and wettest period of the year to reproduce is something I can’t claim to understand. Having listened to the songs of the lyrebird for years, coming face to face with one is a memorable experience. After watching the two birds for around five minutes, I’m soaked through but enthralled. I head back to the car with a deep gratitude for the beauty of this country. Back at home, I’m determined to learn more about these whacky birds. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2021 – 21

Citizen scientists gather at headquarters after a frosty morning counting lyrebirds. Photo copyright Paul Sorensen. Unsurprisingly, their strange mating rituals are not the only thing that is spectacular. Recent studies have also shown that while foraging, they move more forest litter than any other animal on Earth. In fact, a single lyrebird can turn over 155 tonnes in a single year, just by digging and scratching for bugs! This is equivalent to more than ten full-sized dump trucks.

Although more research is needed, this fact alone proves that the forests of Kinglake and other areas in Murrindindi would be a very different place without the lyrebird. The turning over of the forest floor reduces soil compaction and creates new habitats for insects and other small animals. It also enables some plants to germinate more readily while inhibiting the growth of others. The lyrebird’s effect on the ecosystem is so profound that they are referred to as ‘ecosystem engineers’. In fact, after fire, researchers believe lyrebird foraging is the most important process shaping the growth of forests in Kinglake and elsewhere. walking track.

Only future research will reveal the actual number of plants, insects, and fungi that benefit from lyrebirds’ displacement of leaves and soil. Conversely, some plants and animals may have suffered from the arrival of lyrebirds millions of years ago; some may have even gone extinct. The exciting thing is that we just don’t know yet! One reason lyrebirds are so well suited to the forests of Kinglake is because, well, they’ve been here longer than pretty much anything else, save maybe the eucalypts and the rocks. Lyrebirds are one of the most ancient lineages of animals

alive on Earth today, having first evolved around 65 million years ago. But the lyrebird’s continued presence in our forests isn’t necessarily assured. With over 40% of their habitat destroyed in the 2019 – 2020 bushfires, some are worried their numbers might be declining. This makes it even more important we protect lyrebirds in Kinglake, which has been spared major fires for over ten years now. Luckily, however, the lyrebird has many friends in Kinglake, which is home to one of Australia’s great citizen science events: the Lyrebird Survey. This annual event is coordinated by

Parks Victoria. It involves Kinglakers (and guests) gathering together on a cold July morning at designated sites across the National Park. Amidst the fog, rain, and cold, participants tally the number of lyrebirds they hear or see. This data is used to track lyrebird populations and to inform conservation and habitat protection projects. After several hours in the cold, everyone gets together for a morning tea, swapping stories over a hot cup of coffee (or milo for the younger scientists). Unfortunately, the Lyrebird Survey was unable to run in 2020 due to the pandemic,

and in 2021 a scaled-down survey was conducted. Next year, however, promises to be a great one! If connecting with the community, helping research and conservation efforts, and witnessing one of the world’s most spectacular birds sounds like a good combination to you, then consider getting involved next time the survey comes around. And if you’re hoping to witness one of these spectacular birds then head to Kinglake and get walking. Some of the top lyrebirdspotting locations include Masons Falls, Jehoshaphat Gully, or the Andrews Hill.

ID project in 2017. Its aim is to establish a nation-wide database that documents the true species diversity, distribution and breeding habits of Australian frogs and how these might be changing over time.

Australia has over 240 known species of frogs, almost all of which are found nowhere else in the world. While some species are flourishing, others are not doing so well. Since the 1980s, the numbers of some species have plummeted, and four species have become extinct. This concerning pattern is being reflected throughout the world. Many factors are contributing to this decline, including urbanisation, pollution, a drying climate, and disease, particularly the amphibian chytrid fungus.

And this is where citizen scientists, people just like you, come in. It’s simply impossible for a handful of scientists to document all the frogs in Australia. The country is too big, there are too many frogs, and they are not always easy to find. With the launch of the Frog ID app, anyone can now record frog calls and submit them to the Australian Museum. There, an expert listens to the calls, identifies the frog species and adds this information to a national database and map. The mapping step is made easy because the app automatically records the date, time and location of the call. The expert then tells you the names of the species you have recorded, so over time, you will become familiar with the different calls.

n any given day or night, hundreds of ordinary Australians are out in our wetlands, armed with nothing more than a smartphone, recording frog calls. They are all part of a national citizen science project known as Frog ID.

To better understand what is happening to our frogs, the Sydney-based Australian Museum launched the Frog

20,000 individuals have submitted over 335,000 recordings of frog calls from 147 unique species. That’s an amazing effort. The Murrindindi Shire, with its plethora of dams, streams, lakes and wetlands, is something of a hot spot for frogs. At least nine different species of frog commonly occur in this area – the common eastern froglet, eastern signbearing froglet, Peron’s tree frog, eastern banjo frog, brown tree frog, Victoria tree frog, spotted marsh frog, striped marsh frog and Bibron’s toadlet. Sometimes, on a spring evening in Alexandra, frog calls reverberate across the town, particularly if the Peron’s tree frog, with its maniacal “laugh” is in full voice. Interestingly, it is only male frogs that call. The call is really a “love song” to the female and, while most frogs call at night, a recent survey found that one in five recordings of frogs were made in daylight hours. So, you don’t always have to go out at night to record calls. Also, different frogs call at different Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2021 – 25

times of the year. While spring is the most popular time for calling, some frogs prefer other months to try their luck with the girls. Not surprisingly, you will often find several different species of frog calling from the same location. The record on Frog ID is twelve species calling from the same spot. Around the Murrindindi Shire, it is not unusual to find up to five species calling at once.

So, if you decide you’d like to be involved in the Frog ID project, what do you do? Well, first, you need to download the Frog ID app to your phone. It’s very easy to use and available for both Android and Apple devices from Google Play or the App Store. There is a link to these stores from the Frog ID website. You will then need to register with the project, check out the user guides on the app or the website, head out to your nearest wetland, record the frog calls and submit them. COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS/EVENTS IN THIS MAGAZINE

You might choose to visit only one site, say, a dam on your property, or you might choose to visit a range of sites in your area. Whatever option you choose, the Frog ID people encourage you to make repeat recordings at these sites because this gives the best picture of changes to frog populations and behaviours over time. If you are going to a number of different sites, you are asked to clean your shoes between locations to try and limit the spread of diseases such as the deadly chytrid fungus. While using the app is easy, recording frog calls can sometimes be a little challenging. First, you need to record the frog call for at least 20 seconds and sometimes they just won’t call for that long at a stretch. Also, they may be calling happily until they see or hear you nearby and immediately stop. Strong winds can play havoc with recordings as can noisy traffic, machinery or people in the area. Getting close enough to the frogs can sometimes be difficult, too, particularly if fences, thick scrub or marshy ground is in the way. These are the challenges that all keen “froggers” face from time to time and there is no need to be disheartened. Perhaps one of the best ways to start is to take part in Frog ID Week which, this year, is being run from 12 to 21 November. During this time, you are asked to record as many calls as you can in your area. It’s a great way to see if you like “frogging” and decide if you want to continue. Whether you contribute one call or a hundred calls, you will be doing your bit to help Australia’s frogs – and they certainly need all the help they can get. A breakthrough for the Australian Quoll Conservancy: the pink, jelly-bean sized blobs on this quoll’s lower belly are the youngest spotted-tailed quoll babies they have captured on camera with their non-invasive monitoring techniques. T

he Australian Quoll Conservancy (AQC) recently captured images of jelly-bean sized spottedtailed quoll joeys on their mother. To date, these are the smallest wild spotted-tailed quoll young the AQC has captured with their motion-activated cameras. While the photos were taken in Danbulla National Park in North Queensland, they have important implications for the AQC’s proposal to reintroduce spotted-tailed quolls to Kinglake National Park. The images show pink, hairless quoll babies nestled in their mother’s pouch as her lower half dangled in front of the camera while she tried to get at the lure. AQC President Alberto Vale estimates the babies were approximately seven weeks old when they were first photographed. Previously, the youngest pouch joeys the AQC had photographed were estimated to be around nine weeks old, when images of several mothers with young around this age were captured in 2019 at Mount Lewis National Park in North Queensland. The AQC advocates using non-invasive methods to monitor quoll populations,

and the images of these seven-weekold spotted-tailed quoll offspring demonstrate the effectiveness of their specialised remote camera monitoring methods. Photos of the same mother and babies taken three weeks apart revealed a dramatic increase in the young’s size, showing how the AQC’s remote camera setups can track changes over time.

Size comparison: the same babies captured two weeks later are significantly larger. This photo shows how the Australian Quoll Conservancy’s methods can be used to track the progress of a breeding population over time. Photo

The AQC is also implementing their remote camera monitoring methods to investigate the health of a newly discovered population of spotted-tailed quolls in the Gippsland high country. The AQC hopes this population will be suitable for providing individuals to relocate to Kinglake National Park. Since capturing photos of a spottedtailed quoll female in the Alpine National Park in Gippsland, the AQC has also photographed three males in the same population. If the proposal to reintroduce spottedtailed quolls into Kinglake National Park goes ahead, the AQC will use their noninvasive remote monitoring strategies to assess the long-term health and breeding status of the new population.

Wolf spider: They may be hairy and they may scuttle, but Ron Litjens of Yea River Catchment Landcare group hopes that a closer look at spiders will convince people the arachnid world has a lot of wonderful things to offer. Photo courtesy Ron Litjens.

By Emily Friedel

F

or many people, merely hearing the word ‘spider’ sends a shiver down their spine. These hairy creatures, which lurk in corners and scurry around, seem to evoke a primal fear in most individuals. In fact, a study on six-month-old babies showed pupil dilation in response to images of spiders was significantly greater than pupil dilation in response to images of flowers. Based on these results, the researchers suggested that humankind’s pervasive fear of spiders is innate – a feature programmed into us over the course of evolution. But Ron Litjens from Yea River Catchment Landcare Group believes there is more

to spiders than meets the eye (or the dilated pupil). Ron holds these eightlegged creatures in high esteem, and he hopes that a little education on their more endearing qualities will persuade others to shift their perspective. “They really are the most amazing creatures. I personally find them very interesting, but I know that most of the population doesn’t feel that way. So what I try to do is tease out why people are so afraid of spiders when insects don’t bother them at all,” he says. One problem with our perception of spiders is the idea that they pose a significant threat to us. But here in Australia, only two spider species have killed

humans: Sydney funnel webs (Atrax robustus) and redbacks (Latrodectus hasselti). That’s only two out of around 10,000 species that live on this vast chunk of land. And even the deadly spiders aren’t that deadly anymore. According to the Australian Museum, the availability of antivenoms has meant no spider bite fatalities in this country since 1981. We Aussies are far more likely to die from a lightning strike or tetanus than from spider venom. “Spiders have got a bad rap because there are a couple of species that can cause serious damage, if not death – then the whole class of animals is tainted, just like with snakes. I think if people don’t like spiders because

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS/EVENTS IN THIS MAGAZINE

they think they’re dangerous, then if they know the actual percentage of spiders that are harmful – which is really, really, really small – that helps change their minds,” Ron says. So, even if our fear of spiders once functioned as a survival mechanism, it may no longer serve that purpose. What’s more, shunning spiders may disadvantage us. Science is revealing their power to heal far outweighs their power to harm. Venoms from various species of funnel webs – which are among the deadliest venoms in the world – are being investigated in therapeutic applications for everything from stroke to chronic pain. Recently, a component of Fraser Island funnel Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2021 – 31

Badge Spider (Neoparassus diana): Hunter or hunted? While we often think of spiders as predators, Ron says the fact is that they’re often the victims – many other species rely on spiders as a food source. Photo courtesy Ron Litjens. web (Hadronyche infensa) venom that stops the heart was flagged as a potential treatment for heart attacks and heart transplants. The venom peptide’s ability to reduce heart muscle cell damage could be a lifesaver. These possible medical applications for funnel web venoms are only just scratching the surface, with other species’ venoms showing promise for diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s dementia. Agricultural applications are also being explored. “Spider venom is now also being incorporated in natural pesticides because obviously it kills insects,” Ron says.

A Christmas spider (Austracantha minax), which is one of the many spider species you can take a closer look at in the Murrindindi Shire area. Photo CSIRO, CC BY 3.0 <https://creativecommons.

Beyond medical and agricultural breakthroughs, spiders may offer everyday services of benefit to us humans, such as in-home pest control. Despite their small size, spiders are responsible for consuming a mind-boggling volume of

other creepy crawlies. One study estimated that the world’s spiders eat 400 to 800 million tonnes of insects and other invertebrates every year. In contrast, humans are estimated to eat only 400 million tonnes of meat a year. Given that many species kept in check by spiders are considered pests, the arachnid army’s efforts probably deserve more recognition. And, whether we like it or not, spiders and insects share our homes – in numbers that some may find alarming. A survey of 50 homes in North Carolina, USA, found surprisingly high levels of biodiversity, with some people’s houses providing habitat for hundreds of different species. Spiders were among the most common cohabitants, alongside flies, beetles and wasps. Consequently, our homes may not be the barriers to nature we think (or hope)

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS/EVENTS IN THIS MAGAZINE

Peacock spiders are a type of jumping spider that Ron believes can win over hearts with their colourful displays and their cuteness. Photo courtesy www.flickr.com/photos/jean_hort/8085961525 they are and viewing them as their own unique ecosystems better reflects reality. With this in mind, the role of spiders takes on a new light: their expertise as hunters can be put to good use to keep the undesirables at bay. Ron certainly practises what he preaches in this regard, harnessing the predatory prowess of his arachnid housemates. “They have free rein at my place. Huntsmen are great for pest control in people’s houses; they’re analogous to geckos in the tropics – they just cruise their patch of ceiling or wall and they hunt down mosquitoes and flies. They’re big and they’re hairy, but if you understand what they’re doing, they’re beneficial. If you leave them alone, they’ll leave you alone, and that’s better for everybody,” he says. Spiders commonly found

in our homes may also help control other spiders that we’d rather not live with so closely. “There is a myth that daddy long legs have the most potent venom on Earth, but that rumour has spread because daddy long legs feed on redback spiders. So, daddy long legs’ venom is poisonous to redback spiders. But even if their venom was dangerous to humans, daddy long legs’ fangs are so small that they couldn’t penetrate human skin anyway,” Ron says. In addition to appreciating their benefits, those who take the time to learn more about their spidery companions may find more common ground than they’d imagine. We even share some similarities with spiders at the DNA level. Sequencing the genomes of two types of spiders revealed parallels with the human genome

structure. Specifically, the spider genomes had short sections coding for proteins (exons) interspersed with long non-coding sections (introns). This pattern of exons and introns is like the human genome but unlike other arthropod genomes. And human parents who pride themselves on nurturing their offspring can surely identify with the maternal instincts of certain types of spiders. For example, wolf spiders – commonly seen in backyards all over Australia – are protective mothers, carrying their spiderlings on their backs until the spiderlings are old enough to fend for themselves. One type of Asian jumping spider (Toxeus magnus) even suckles its young on ‘milk’ just as humans and other mammals do. “They’re not all mean and nasty creatures – there’s

more to spiders than just being hairy, scuttling creatures. Some of them actually look after their young and nurture them; there is a connection there between mum spider and baby spider. Once you start hearing stories like that, your opinion can’t help but be swayed,” Ron says. For people like Ron who get to know their spider friends, an appreciation of their more endearing qualities can lead to genuine affection. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2021 – 33

The jumping spiders are particularly adept at capturing hearts. A genus of jumping spiders, the peacock spiders, has become a YouTube sensation for its spectacular markings and elaborate courtship rituals. According to Ron, peacock spider displays appeal to even the most hardened spider-haters when backed by a disco hit. “I don’t care what you think about spiders, I dare anyone who looks at a jumping spider to say they aren’t cute. When you see the peacock spider dance to ‘Stayin’ Alive’, you can’t help but like them,” he says. The human-spider relationship has long been fraught with unease, possibly due to a deep-seated wariness we picked up somewhere during evolution and carried with us ever since. However, with antivenom advances and research leading to a richer understanding of the

Jumping spider: Most spiders have a lot of eyes – usually eight, but some have as many as 12 – which can be arranged in many different ways and Ron says eye configuration is one means of identifying species. Photo courtesy Ron Litjens. spider world, it is becoming clear that these little eightlegged creatures should be celebrated more than feared. Each new scientific discovery suggests that it’s in humankind’s best interests to trade our suspicion of spiders for fascination. Perhaps a YouTube search for ‘peacock spider Stayin’ Alive’ is a good place to start. If you would like to learn more about spiders from Ron, his next presentation will be on Friday 3 September at 7.30pm at the Yea Butter Factory, 13 Rattray Street, Yea.

T

he Yea & District Open Gardens will be held over the weekend of 6 and 7 November. Ten exceptional gardens will be open with most of these new openings and the reopenings have had extensive new plantings. The Open Gardens committee are delighted to have two of our iconic historic homestead gardens included this year and several large country gardens; all with distinctive planting styles ranging from formal to native or English cottage style. The historic gardens have all the usual features of majestic trees, impressive hedges, fountains, statues and large formal ponds. These will not detract from the other spectacular gardens on offer. The large country gardens are full of colour and embrace their rural landscape and the surrounding outstanding views. They also feature beautiful outdoor entertaining spaces and water features. The town gardens are all unique and will delight. Enjoy a ferny bushland glade, a spectacular garden which

shows what can be achieved in 18 months, the historic first ‘Gentleman’s residence’ built in the township with its large formal garden and one with an outstanding display of pots full of colour and texture. Gardens are open from 10am to 5pm each day. Full details and maps on www. yearotary.org.au or contact coordinator Elaine on 0431 752 367. Cost $5 per garden or $35 weekend ticket for all gardens. Yea Garden Expo, organised by Rotary Club of Yea, will be held on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September from 9am to 3pm. This is just the time of year when interested gardeners are busy preparing their gardens for spring colour. The Expo provides an opportunity to view a host of garden related products at the Yea Saleyards site (Flat Lead Rd), just off the Yea-Whittlesea Road. The site is flat, sealed and easily accessible for everyone. Why not take advantage of the $10 entry fee (children free), free parking, a wide range of goods and services, and a plentiful supply of food and drinks, (much of it

homemade) and come and visit. Over 70 vendors will be on site with exhibits ranging from bulbs, seeds, seedlings, flowering plants and trees to garden tools and equipment, garden art and ornaments, compost, fertilisers and more. Check out The Australian made RAT barrow (ride on, articulated tipping barrow) which have always been a big hit with visitors as are the quirky horseshoe garden sculptures, produced by local Darryl Callander and which can be made to order. There will even be a plant creche where purchases can

be left until ready for pick up on departure. This year it is expected more vendors will be on site as the Expo, now in its fifth year, is continuing to grow. The daily popular speaker program, featuring a range of topics from bee keeping, pruning and more will again be available. Find out more at www. yeagardenexpo.com.au or keep up to date via Facebook (Yea Garden Expo). ook yourself in for the weekend of 23 and 24 October to explore eight beautiful private gardens in the Murrindindi Shire that will fling open their gates for the annual Alexandra and District Open Gardens event. Three town gardens and five large country gardens will open to give you some inspiration to take home with you, including a 100-year-old school yard transformed into a beautiful country garden. If you have ever wondered why visiting an open garden is so popular then here is a list of reasons why you should come along. Be inspired You don’t have to be a garden enthusiast to be inspired by all the beauty and ingenuity you can see by visiting an open garden. It is a rare treat to have the garden owners agree to let in the public to see their garden and admire their work and vision. It is also a wonderful way to learn about creating gardens and see inspiring ideas to take back to your own garden. Have a good day out Spring is at its peak at the end of October so each of the eight gardens is brimming with blooms. Why not pack the kids, your friends and your motherin-law, or your loved ones in the car and head out for a day in the beautiful surrounds. Maybe pack yourself a picnic

and enjoy a lunch under a shady tree, or beside a pond or simply plonk onto one of the beautiful green lawns. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the fun day out! A shopping paradise At each of the gardens you will find a selection of additional attractions for you to enjoy and maybe even make a purchase. There will be food and coffee available at some gardens. Other gardens will treat you to a Devonshire tea. Other gardens have garden sculptures for sale. If plant stalls are your thing, then there will be several to choose from offering plants of all types. Maybe pack your hessian shopping bag and stock up on handmade garden tools, homemade produce, garden seeds, vegie seedlings etc. Become a vegie producer Most of the gardens have their own vegetable patches with delicious produce. Growing a bountiful supply of your own veggies can involve a bit of trial and error. Come and learn the tricks of the trade from the garden owners who will be in their garden throughout the weekend and are ready to answer any questions you may have. You may just learn a different way to grow, propagate, fertilise, protect and enjoy your own produce. Support a great cause All the funds raised from the gate

takings go directly back into the local community. Your visit to a garden allows Alexandra and District Open Gardens Group to contribute to significant local projects and support many local community groups. Last year they planted a circle of maple trees in Leckie Park to commemorate and celebrate 30 years of Alexandra and District Open Gardens. In recent years the group were drivers in funding the total redesigning and construction of the Alexandra Rotary Park. Not only does the park now have a fresh facelift but it has allowed the Alexandra Visitor Information centre to have a greater visual presence in the town. Another project the group funded was the redesigning and construction of a new garden for the Alexandra RSL. This worthy recipient now has a beautiful and functional garden that both RSL members and visitors can enjoy while admiring the RSL murals adorning the walls. Other projects include supporting new landscaping for the Alexandra Secondary College and Alexandra Hospital, name plaques on mature and significant trees in Leckie Park as well as several cash donations to many community groups. For more information visit www.alexandra opengardens.com.au for a map of all open gardens and descriptions of what you can see at each one. Tickets are available at each garden $5 per garden or $35 for an ‘all gardens’ pass. Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2021 – 41

C

ucamelons, mouse melons, Mexican sour gherkins, Mexican miniature watermelons, pepquinos – whatever you call them, Melothria scabra undoubtedly win the prize for cutest backyard produce. These grape-sized fruits taste like citrusy cucumbers. They are a fun addition to sandwiches and salads or perfect for making pintsized pickles. They are also a favourite among kids who like to wander through the vegie garden picking fresh snacks for on-the-spot consumption. Cucamelons are easy to grow, enjoying similar conditions to their distant cousins the cucumbers. They can be sown in pots in early spring – if you have a warm, frost-free spot to take care of them – and planted out after the last frosts. Or you can sow them directly after the last frost. Surprisingly, you can also grow them from tubers saved from last year’s crop. In late autumn, lift the tubers and store them over the colder months (the tubers will not tolerate heavy frosts in the garden). To store them, place 5-10cm of pre-

moistened potting mix in a large-diameter plastic pot, lay some tubers on the mix spaced so they don’t touch each other and cover with another 5-10cm of potting mix. You can keep layering until you reach the top of the pot. Leave them in a cool, frost-free place like the garage or garden shed and plant out in spring. Cucamelons are pretty easy going but do best in rich, well-draining soil in a sunny position. The addition of plenty of compost or aged manure to the soil before planting will make them happy, as will regular applications of seaweed solution and fish emulsion. They are relatively droughttolerant plants but will produce more if kept well watered – thick mulch around the base for water retention is a good idea. Cucamelons are best grown up a trellis, which also has space-saving benefits, and can even be grown in large pots for those who are tight on growing room. One great benefit of the cucamelon is that it attracts neither pests nor diseases and you’re unlikely to have to do much other than fertilising, watering and

weeding to produce a bountiful crop of blemishfree fruit. Harvest cucamelons when they’re about the size of a large grape. The sourness of the skin increases with age, so for less zest, pick them younger rather than older. They have quite a long fruiting season, so you should be able to enjoy them well into autumn or whenever the frosts start. Cucamelons are open Ingredients • 115g cucamelons • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar • 2 tablespoons water • 1 tablespoon raw sugar or panela • 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes

pollinated, and each plant produces both male and female flowers, so you can save seeds from any ripe fruit that falls to the ground. For any cucamelons that make it back to the kitchen (it’s hard to resist popping them into your mouth as soon as they’re picked!), try this recipe for some amazing bite-sized refrigerator pickles adapted from the Love and Olive Oil blog (loveandoliveoil.com): • • • • •

5 allspice berries 5 whole black peppercorns ½ star anise pod ½ teaspoon mustard seeds 2 slices of fresh ginger, about 2cm long

Instructions 1. Rinse the cucamelons and cut off the blossom ends. 2. Pack cucamelons into a clean jar (or jars if you want to make smaller batches) along with the pepper flakes, allspice berries, peppercorns, anise, mustard seeds and ginger. 3. Combine the vinegar, water, sugar and salt in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring until sugar and salt completely dissolved. 4. Pour the ‘pickle juice’ over the cucamelons, filling the jar to within 1cm of the top (if necessary, you can top it off with a bit more water). 5. Secure the lid and place pickles in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours. 6. Pickles will keep in the refrigerator for up to a fortnight.

rout opening to all rivers and streams in the area starts on 4 September and with a healthy stocking of trout from Victorian Fisheries of large ex-brood rainbow trout the area will be buzzing with anglers from near and far to try their hand at catching a trophy sized fish. But it’s not all about the stocked fish with the resident browns and rainbows finished with their spawning runs and looking for an opportunity to feed up again some really large wild fish are up for the taking also. Lure fishing is the most successful method with shallow divers, spinners and spoons all worth a try. Baits like worms, maggots, mudeye, meal worms and powerbait are the go and for those who dabble in the art of fly fishing large

wet flies like woolly buggers work well in the early start of spring then trending towards dry fly as the weather warms up. Lake Eildon will slowly warm up and the trout fishing will slow down with the natives becoming more active. Murray cod will be in breeding mode and these large fish will protect their nesting spots with real aggression attacking anything that is near from lures to bait like yabbies and worms. Yellow belly will be schooling up in large numbers getting ready for the spawning run and it is not uncommon to hook one yellow belly and having multiple fish follow the hooked fish all the way to the landing net. This can be some real fun on light gear jigging soft plastics up the timber that surrounds the lake or down steep drop offs or cliff faces.

Bait fishing with yabbies and scrub worms from the shore line or water craft is also a great method with Bonnie Doon, Goughs Bay, Delatite Arm, Jerusalem Creek and Frasier Park some of the areas that can be accessed by car for some bank fishing. Eildon Pondage will also receive a stocking of the large ex-brood stock rainbow trout on top of the regular stocking program. This is a great spot to bring the family for a fish with plenty of easily accessible areas with seating, grassy banks and fishing platforms to fish from. A simple running sinker rig with a small size 6 hook and power bait or local dough and the aid of some fish pellets or berley is all you need to give yourself a chance of catching, but for the more serious angler lure fishing is a great method with Gold krocs, Tassie devil lures and shallow divers.

e’re all now well aware that exercise is good for us, and it’s good for both body and mind. However, specifics of the health benefits brought by physical activity are still being uncovered by science. As we age, our brains change. Unfortunately, some of these changes are negative. Deterioration of white matter, which is made up of nerve fibre bundles that carry information around the brain, is linked to declining cognitive function in normal aging and Alzheimer’s disease. So looking after your white matter is essential for keeping your brain in good working order. The good news: a simple activity that doesn’t cost a cent could help do just that. A recent study published in NeuroImage found that regular, brisk walking could not only maintain white matter but could potentially increase it. These white matter

Friday night headliners, Pierce Brothers, one of Australia’s best known and loved blues and roots artists

f there’s one thing the last year or so has taught us, it’s that we should never take a weekend away in the country for granted. Throw in some excellent music, a few drinks and good friends, and that weekend away is looking better and better every day. You can do all that and more on the Marysville Music Weekend on 15 to 17 October. The Marysville Music Weekend was originally set up in 2015 by local resident, Peter Guest, and a small team of Marysville residents to help the Triangle community heal from the devastation of the Black Saturday Bushfires. The first weekend was auspiced by the Marysville Cultural Community, but the growth and success of the weekend

surpassed their resources and in 2016 the Marysville and District Lions Club took on the event. Since then, it’s gone from strength to strength as one of the best boutique weekends away festivals in Australia. This year the event is running as even more ‘boutique’ than usual with only 350 tickets available. The weekend will be broken up into four main concerts to help meet Covid safety requirements. The lineup features something for almost everyone. Friday night headliners, Pierce Brothers, started their career as the most popular buskers on Bourke Street in Melbourne and have gone on to become one of Australia’s best known and loved blues and roots artists.

Australia’s leading man of jazz, James Morrison, will be taking charge on Saturday night with a 10-piece big band in tribute to the great songs of Motown, made famous by The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and many more. Saturday afternoon takes a slightly more Americana tack with emerging Alt-country star, Freya Josephine Hollick, in poll position. Sunday afternoon features local talent including Bobby Valentine and His Band of Renown, J D Delves and band Harvest Moon and Beverly and Leigh Fraser and their band Velvet.

Weekend. This weekend is a showcase event in our region, bringing locals and visitors from far and wide. We’re pumped about the new direction of the new brand of the Marysville Music Weekend. Building on the strong success of the Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend, we offer a world class line-up of amazing music, food and drinks all set in our picturesque home of Marysville. Enjoy the country hospitality and join us for a great weekend,” says event director Bill Bate. The weekend is supported by Creative Victoria and Murrindindi Shire Council, and local businesses are helping the event get back on its feet with economic support coming from our major sponsors Peppers Marysville, also our Accommodation Partner and the Community Bank Bendigo Bank Marysville and Upwey Branch. Local businesses are relishing the prospect of visitors returning to the area and the economic benefits that this will bring.

“We’re excited to launch the Marysville Music

Janine Arendsen set herself the task of painting a watercolour every day for 365 days.

by Carol Hopkins

D

eciding to paint a watercolour every day for 365 days is an enormous commitment, but that’s exactly the goal that Yea artist Janine Arendsen set herself in July 2019. What is even more amazing is that Janine had never painted before! After quitting her job in real estate, Janine was at a bit of a loose end. She felt there was something that was calling her but, initially, she

wasn’t quite sure what that was. Finding a set of her son’s watercolour paints provided the impetus for her to start putting brush to paper. Janine emphasises, “It was the cheapest, nastiest little watercolour set. It would have cost about $20.” Nonetheless, it was the start of something big. She completed her first painting – a butterfly – on 1 July 2019. “After that first one, I literally said to myself, ‘I’m going to do one painting

a day for a year’.” And she did, completing her final work on 30 June 2020. Even a four-week trip to Central Australia with her family in a campervan didn’t deter her. To document her progress, Janine set up an Instagram account where she posted, in numbered order, a photo of each completed painting. Her subjects were many and varied – landscapes, animals, birds, flowers and everyday objects. As Janine explained,

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY FOR ADVERTISERS/EVENTS IN THIS MAGAZINE

“Because I was doing a painting every day I was like, ‘What will I paint today? Oh, I know, I’ll paint that suitcase’.” Setting up her Instagram account proved to be a real booster for her confidence. She clocked up quite a few sales, and dog-lovers in the USA were so impressed with her work they commissioned her to paint portraits of their own pets from photographs they provided. Although Janine was new to watercolour painting, she Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2021 – 57

had always had an interest in art, completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in visual arts at Monash University in the 1980s. This was a theoretical course, and her only practical training in art came from a short course in life drawing. Some time later she completed a twoyear course in photography at the Melbourne School of Photography and, while she loved this area, it had to take second place to her jobs in the corporate sector. However, she says studying photography definitely gave her a better eye for a good visual image.

that she would have spent, on average, about seven hours on each piece. That’s an incredible 1,890 hours of painting!

During her year of daily art, Janine completed 270 paintings. Some took more than one day to complete, hence the number is less than 365. She estimates

Over the length of the project, Janine’s tools and skills improved. She purchased top quality paints, brushes and paper and signed up for a number of

Janine admits she was very focused during this time. “Sometimes I said, ‘OK kids, you are going to have to get your own dinner. I’m busy, I’m working’.” However, Janine stresses that she couldn’t have completed this mammoth project without the support of her husband, Adam Dennis. “He not only encouraged me to do it, he insisted that I do it,” she says.

“I want to find my own style, whatever that is. I want to produce a series of paintings that has some continuity so that people can say, ‘Oh, that’s a Janine Arendsen painting’.” As part of that process, Janine has moved from watercolours to acrylics. “Acrylics are so easy. You literally wipe the bench and everything is clean.” At the moment, Janine doesn’t have a dedicated space for painting. She works in the dining area

of her house and has to clear everything away at mealtimes. This will change when her new house is completed. Juggling her art with a busy, casual job with Murrindindi Shire Council is also challenging, and Janine admits that she has been secretly pleased when there have been COVID lockdowns as this has given her more time for painting. She is also very active in Yea’s local theatre group, Yappers, which she says is another enjoyable outlet for her creativity. Janine is very modest about her talents. When she began the project, she had real doubts about her artistic abilities. “I always said to myself, ‘I am not an artist. I

am not creative’.” Even now she firmly believes that she is nothing special, that everyone has the ability to paint. “You just have to do it. Just get out the paints and start. Everyone’s got artistic ability, they really have. The difference between me and someone that hasn’t yet started is 1,890 hours of practice”. Although Janine sells many of her artworks via Instagram, the Blue Thumb website and various exhibitions, sales are not the main focus of her efforts.

Painting day 199: Hereford. Below: Circus

“I’m happy when I’m happy with a piece. When I look at something and recognise it’s good, it’s an achievement. I’m my biggest critic and I’m trying to please myself, I’m doing this for me. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.” Looking back over her intensive year of art, Janine laughs. “I am pretty proud I did 365 days, but I don’t think I’d ever do it again.” Although it was a valuable experience, Janine acknowledges that it required an enormous amount of focus and commitment. Nonetheless, it is clear that all her hard work has paid off, revealing an artist with real talent and passion. ell, the best laid plans eh? Just as we put out our Rustic Simplicity ‘What’s On in 2021’ Winter/ Spring postcard, we went into lockdown and the winter events were COVID casualties again this year. Fingers crossed for spring – we’ve managed to reschedule our Meet the Maker. Affectionately known as our resident ‘Bag Lady’, Nelena Piu of Wintu will visit with her repurposed blanket and vintage fabric skirts and tops, handmade scarves, handbags, face masks, and more too – yay! So, all going well, we will have a street stall out the front of our little store during the school holidays on Saturday 25 September. Nelena will be back again for the Melbourne Cup Weekend festivities in Alexandra on Sunday 31 October. The full range of Wintu handmade products is available yearround at Rustic Simplicity. Our Meet the Maker event in November is set to coincide with Rustic Simplicity’s 10th Birthday. Join us in welcoming Michelle Steenhuizen of Pebbles Rock, who will be out the front with a street stall, showcasing her – dare I say it – ‘Christmas’ range. What a great opportunity to get some early Xmas shopping done. And Michelle’s regular range of Pebbles Rock art is available year-round at Rustic Simplicity – quirky and fun vignettes created using a combination of various pebbles, paint and found objects. As we said in the last few issues, we are still under no illusion that life will be going totally back to ‘normal’ any time soon. So best to check ahead of your visit to ensure events are going ahead, and to confirm opening times - currently subject to change. Like/follow our socials @ RusticSimplicityTheShearNshedS to get real time updates. Look forward to seeing you soon – see our ad in this edition for further information.
