W
hen nurse and self-confessed brown thumb Samantha Davey bought five little truffleinoculated trees, people laughed at her. Samantha, who admits she can kill a cactus, wasn’t sure how it was going to go either. But two years after planting those truffle trees in her backyard, she has harvested her first black Périgord truffle and grown hundreds of kilos of oyster mushrooms. Samantha has discarded her reputation as a terrible gardener and is now recognised by strangers in the street as ‘The Mushroom Lady’. The truffle tree purchase came about after Samantha bought a little hilltop property in Caveat and wanted to spend as much time as possible at home with her children, so she was searching for an alternative to her nursing career. “I just wanted the kids to have the same thing I had growing up – I wanted them to have the room. It’s so peaceful up here; there’s no other place I really want to go,” Samantha says.
Above: Samantha Davey holding a block of sugar cane mulch growing turkey tail mushrooms (Trametes veriscolor), one of the medicinal mushroom species she is experimenting with. Right: A close-up of the underside of a turkey tail mushroom. Samantha’s foray into fungi continues to raise the eyebrows of those around her, even after she got over the first major hurdle of not killing her young truffle trees. On a bitterly cold day last winter, Samantha’s search for the tiny cracks in the earth around a truffle tree that signal a fruiting body is forming was a source of amusement for some. “My neighbour said to me, I drove past and I couldn’t work out what you were doing, ‘I thought you were praying’.” Spurred on by others’ good-humoured ribbing and taking the discovery of her first truffle as a sign, Samantha is going to stick with her rapidly growing mushroom obsession. And, much to her surprise, she appears to have a magic touch when it comes to cultivating gourmet mushies. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19 – 11
Left: White oyster mushrooms with some other home-grown goodies at the Caveat Mushrooms stall at Yarck Market. Above: Immature lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus), another medicinal mushroom Samantha is experimenting with – it’s also considered one of the best-tasting gourmet mushrooms available.
Getting bored waiting for her truffle trees to mature (which usually takes between five and ten years), Samantha started Googling to find something truffle-related that she could try and happened upon information about growing pearl oyster mushrooms.
to three different restaurants on the Mornington Peninsula, and they all took them.”
sweetness of the sugar cane mulch. I don’t want to grow heaps of them; I just want to grow really good ones,” she says.
Samantha grows her oyster mushrooms in a small, ramshackle shed on her property, hanging the bags from a makeshift web of bungee cord.
“I thought, I’ll have a go at that. If I do something, I don’t just do it by a little bit, so I did 150 bags of these blue pearl oyster mushrooms, and they went off. I was shocked because they were growing like mental,” she says.
“My mushroom shack of joy is what I like to call it,” she says with a grin.
Over the cooler months, Samantha grows blue and white oyster mushrooms, then switches to pink and yellow varieties over the warmer months.
Each bag yielded between 2.5 and 5 kilos of mushrooms, so Samantha found herself with a bumper crop and no idea what to do with it. “I don’t even know why they grew so well because I’m not a gardener, but I just thought, ‘I’ve got to get rid of all these mushrooms’. We’re from Moorooduc, and I was living there at the time, so I’d just come up on the weekend and cut these mushrooms and take them back with me. I took them 12 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19
She credits her low-tech set-up, small batch production, her growing medium, and Caveat’s pristine springfed bore water for the superb quality of mushroom she’s able to produce. “Heaps of people have the big, fancy set-up, but it’s like having a hydroponic tomato: it looks great, but it doesn’t taste like nature because it was grown in such a sterile environment. I grow mine seasonally, I don’t temperature control the shed, so whatever the temperature is up here, that’s what I’m going to grow in. And I use sugar cane mulch, most people get straw, and I think this is what made the difference with the taste, the
Recently, she has also started experimenting with other species of edible and medicinal mushrooms, including lion’s mane, turkey tail, and wood ear. Samantha now sells her mushrooms through YEAya’s Fresh Produce in Yea and at some local markets. She says local demand for them far exceeds what her tiny one-woman operation can produce. So it seems that the notorious brownthumb turned mushroom farmer is having the last laugh. pot the billy goat is like a faithful dog to 12-year-old Bradley Irvine. It’s not unusual for Spot to jump into the car to sit on Bradley’s lap and hitch a ride to a local football match, where he follows at Bradley’s heels and dispels the myth that all billy goats are aggressive head-butters. Spot is just one in a herd of more than 120 Boer goats that Bradley owns and runs on the family farm in Acheron, Belle Ridge. These goats are not only cherished animals that Bradley spends hours with every day, but they are also an indispensible part of his education. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19 – 15
When Bradley goes to check on his herd of more than 120 goats, they rush out to greet him as though he were one of their own. Bradley has severe dyslexia, which makes reading and writing very difficult for him and prevents him from thriving in a formal school setting. “School is pretty boring, I don’t have much love for it,” Bradley says. But with the support of Alexandra Secondary College, Bradley takes every Thursday off school to learn about various aspects of farming, which he hopes to turn into a career one day. And working with his herd of meat goats provides invaluable lessons in everything from mathematics to Mendelian genetics. “I have to calculate ratios with drenches and the stocking rates on acreage, which is tricky, especially with hill country because it’s 16 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19
quite unpredictable – you might get a dry patch and then another patch that’s much wetter close by,” he says. “I’m trialling some breeding with the red Kalahari goats to try to get some reds and browns in the coat colours, because it’s a bit of a niche, and I reckon they look quite nice. I just wanted to have a bit of fun with it, a bit of a side project.” A deep love for his animals and concern for their wellbeing has even led to some opportunities to practice first aid skills in genuine medical emergencies. “I’ve brought baby kids back from the dead by performing CPR,” Bradley says. Of course, managing the herd is teaching Bradley all about animal husbandry, for
which he appears to have a gift. Despite the meat goat industry being in its infancy in Australia, and goats having significantly different needs than more commonly kept livestock, Bradley has managed to build the herd from just three goats to what it is today in a matter of three years. His diligence and passion are undoubtedly large contributors to his success. “When babies are getting born, every morning before school I’ll come out, and I’ll check on them, and when I get home from school I’ll check on them again.” Along with being direct contributors to Bradley’s education, the goats provide inspiration and motivation to get through his assigned schoolwork. “I have pictures of them [the
goats] all over my school books,” he says, with mother Christina adding that the more he struggles with a subject, the more goat photos it has (his English book has a lot of goats on it). The goats have also opened doors to extracurricular activities that Bradley might not have pursued otherwise. In 2017, Bradley started the meat goat section at the Alexandra Show, with sponsorship from clothing brand RB Sellars, and in 2018, he took five of his prized Boers, including Spot, to the Royal Melbourne Show. Bradley spent eleven days at the Show with his goats on display or walking them through crowds for showgoers to meet them. “Many children and adults had never seen a goat let alone touched one,” Bradley
Bradley with one of his female Boer goats, who quite happily lets him pick her up. “We’ve put the time and effort into making them friendly,” Bradley says. says. “I hope I’ve been able to show, teach, and inform Melbourne people about our way of life in the country, which I would never give up for city life.”
allowed him to switch from student to teacher at times. Last spring, he took a local Landcare group on a tour of the farm and shared some of his expertise with them.
Bradley’s experiences overseeing his meat goat operation and the knowledge he has gained through his Thursdays spent exploring the practical aspects of farming have

conventional pet to take to the footy, and he is certainly not a conventional teacher, it seems that he and his goat pals are perfectly qualified to facilitate the education of a boy who isn’t suited to traditional schooling.
Possessing the skills to present to a group of adults and effectively communicating what he has learned through his agricultural activities are a sure sign that the unique, school-supported program Bradley is undertaking is doing its job: keeping him engaged in his education.

Ashlea Heffernan from Alexandra Fruit & Vegetables with some of the alternatives to single-use plastic bags: reusable net and fabric bags. Ashlea says they also have compostable Bio Bags available, a more environmentally friendly version of single-use carry bags, available for a small fee while customers are getting ready for the lightweight plastic bag ban that will be in effect by the end of 2019.
By Emily Friedel
T
he Victorian Government is set to roll out a ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags by the end of 2019. This means that the singleuse plastic bags commonly given away at supermarket checkouts will no longer be available. While there is little dispute over the negative environmental impacts of single-use plastic bags – everything from harming wildlife to the greenhouse gases resulting from their
production – the new legislation will take some getting used to for many people. Did you know that each Australian uses approximately 200 plastic shopping bags per year? But Ashlea Heffernan from Alexandra Fruit & Vegetables says that once you form new habits, shopping without single-use plastic bags is easy and rewarding, and she has some handy tips for switching to more environmentally friendly options.
Bags made from recycled fabric are an even more ecofriendly choice, so if you can get your hands on a locallymade Boomerang Bag, they’re an excellent option. Boxes Most grocery stores and supermarkets have piles of unwanted boxes and Styrofoam containers out the back, and these are terrific for carrying your shopping, especially if you have a large amount. It’s not always obvious that boxes are available, so you may have to ask, but more often than not shops will gladly give you one because it saves them having to dispose of them. Ashlea says Alexandra Fruit & Vegetables usually has plenty of boxes floating around and customers are always welcome to use them. Paper Bags While the small, plastic ‘barrier bags’ used for fruits and vegetables will be exempt from the ban, there are still better alternatives, such as paper bags.
Alexandra Fruit & Vegetables has many options available for plastic bag free shopping, and Ashlea also recommends checking out floraandfauna.com.au for more environmentally friendly shopping helpers. Fabric and mesh bags Reusable fabric and mesh bags are one of the best alternatives to lightweight plastic bags because they are durable (the more you use them, the more you offset the greenhouse gases produced from their manufacture) and easily washable, which is important for food safety according to the Food Safety Information Council (FSIC). 20 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19
“The mesh bags we get in have been so popular, and to clean them you can just rinse them and they’re dry within a couple of hours,” Ashlea says. The FSIC notes that you should be mindful of where you place your mesh bags if they contain fruit and veggies that won’t be cooked – avoid surfaces that may harbour unwanted contaminants.
“We have paper bags available, and people seem to bring them back and reuse them too, especially the tough ones,” Ashlea says. When they’re no longer suitable for shopping, paper bags can be composted or used to start wood fires in winter. Reusable Plastic Containers Having easily washable, watertight containers for buying meat, poultry, and seafood is vital for food hygiene according to the FSIC. Keeping separate containers especially for buying and storing these items is an easy fix, and cuts down on having to transfer these goods to other
containers when you get home. “Even going to the butcher now, I take my own containers. I bought specific ones for meat, and I just keep reusing them. It’s great because you don’t have that disgusting bag to fling away into the rubbish after using meat,” Ashlea says. Jars In stores where bulk foods are available, bringing in your own jars is a great option and again saves you having to transfer food items to a different container when you get home. Recycling jars for your food shopping adds an extra layer of eco-friendliness, and Ashlea says Alexandra Fruit & Vegetables is more than happy to facilitate this process and provide clean, recycled jars for anyone who wants to use them. “People can bring in jars if they like, and we sterilise them to use for the bulk food,” she says. Making the Change Even though it may seem like a big change for some of us, shopping without single-use plastic bags is very doable with a few small steps, Ashlea says. “If you can, get your few little necessities like your net bag or your reusable bag, and try and get yourself into that routine. I try to put my bags at the front door, and then I don’t really have an excuse not to use them because they’re there, and if I wash a jar out, I’ll put it in that bag ready to use.” For more tips from Ashlea, go to the Alexandra Fruit & Vegetables Facebook Page, just search for @ alexandrafruitandveg

The spotted-tailed quoll, mainland Australia’s largest marsupial carnivore, is an endangered species in Victoria. The Australian Quoll Conservancy began a project in 2018 to survey Victorian forests for quolls, with motion-activated cameras being set up in Toolangi and Kinglake in the hope of confirming anecdotal evidence of their presence in those areas. T
he spotted-tailed quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) may not be as wellknown as its cousin the Tassie devil, but it is an equally fierce predator.
Armed with formidable teeth, powerful jaws, and incredibly sharp claws, a spotted-tailed quoll, which is about the size of a domestic cat, can happily take down and consume an adult male brushtail possum. There
are even records of them attacking prey much larger than themselves, such as wallabies.
A female quoll in her den. Australian Quoll Conservancy President Alberto Vale says that finding a female in the Victorian survey project is the ‘holy grail’ because it’s a sign there is a breeding colony in the area. Photo courtesy WildCAM Australia ®
But just like the Tassie devil, being a fearsome hunter isn’t enough to stop the species having to fight for survival, and Victoria’s spottedtailed quolls are listed as endangered. A recent push for conservation of this species in Victoria has come in the form of a three-year surveying project run Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19 – 23
According to quoll specialist James Dawson, habitat loss is one of the biggest threats to the species. “It’s pretty clear that historically, loss of habitat from land clearing is the highest reason for the decline of quolls,” he says. Photo courtesy WildCAM Australia ® by the Australian Quoll Conservancy (AQC). The project, which started in June 2018, involves motionactivated cameras with quoll-attracting lures and has so far covered over 100 square kilometres of historical and plausible quoll habitat in Victoria.
National Park and Toolangi State Forest in the hope they will confirm anecdotal evidence of the presence of spotted-tailed quolls in the Murrindindi Shire area, and those involved in the project are optimistic about the chances of capturing images of them.
Some of the cameras are secured to trees in Kinglake
“We’re confident that we’re going to find them,” says
Alberto Vale, president of the AQC, who flew down to Victoria from Cairns in September to assist volunteers with checking and setting up cameras. Chris Cobern, Upper Goulburn Landcare Network Coordinator and local volunteer doing fieldwork for the survey, is also quietly confident that the project will provide proof of spottedtailed quolls living in our area. In 2018, Chris received two independent reports from Kinglake residents who believe they have heard quoll calls on and off for the past five or six years, and he knows of a potential sighting in Toolangi earlier this year. “There was a bloke doing fox control for a farmer in Toolangi, setting up traps for foxes, and he was pretty sure he actually saw a quoll.”
The Australian Quoll Conservancy has developed a non-invasive method for checking the gender and pregnancy status of quolls: getting them to show their undersides to the camera. This image shows a male quoll. Photo courtesy WildCAM Australia ® 24 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19
“It’s not just wishful thinking, I think it’s all starting to add up that they’re around, so hopefully over the next three years with this project, we might get that hard evidence that we’re looking for.” According to quoll specialist James Dawson from the
NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, even though quolls are “pound-for-pound a pretty tough beast”, they tend to avoid humans whenever possible, making them quite cryptic creatures. However using cameras with lures is a good way of finding them. “You stand a pretty high chance of picking quolls up if they’re around using that method,” he says. This provides further hope that the Victorian survey project will substantiate reports of spotted-tailed quolls in Kinglake and Toolangi. But Alberto says the project is about more than snapping a shot of a curious quoll: it’s about establishing the location of breeding colonies to protect and manage them. “For us, it’s not just finding one animal. We know that a male quoll travels long distances, we had one up here in Far North Queensland travelling 20 kilometres, so a male could be just passing through an area. Our interest is in colonies, so once we find a female, we know that we’ve got a colony.”
The AQC has developed a protocol for setting up cameras and lures to entice quolls to stand on their hind legs and show their bellies to the camera. And a glimpse of a quoll tummy can reveal a lot. “We’ve got systems now where if an animal comes on the camera it will tell us immediately whether it’s a male or female, pregnant or not, by just showing its underside,” Alberto says. While the AQC’s project is focused solely on surveying spotted-tailed quolls in Victoria, finding and conserving these animals has implications beyond just one species. “Quolls eat a range of things from brushtail possums to small potoroos and bandicoots and other small mammals, to rats and antechinus, birds and lizards,
Australian Quoll Conservancy Presiden Alberto Vale (Right) and project volunteer Chris Cobern checking motion-activated cameras in Kinglake National Park. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19 – 25
A quoll’s spots are unique and can be used for identification without having to catch or tag animals. “The spots don’t lie; each quoll is totally individual – it’s like your fingerprints,” Alberto says. and everything down to the odd invertebrate. And in doing so, they regulate the populations of other species, particularly the key prey species that they’re targeting in any one area,” James says.
heaps of rats, and rats are the prey for spotted-tailed quolls. So if you take the quolls out, more and more rats are available, and fewer seeds will germinate, for example,” Alberto says.
Spotted-tailed quolls may also provide a natural means of helping to control introduced pest animals, which has a flow-on effect to other parts of the native ecosystem.
“I did a study in southern Kosciuszko National Park after the extensive bushfires of 2003. The possum populations copped a real hit, but rabbits were less affected by the fires and, with their ability to breed quickly, came back very well after the fires. The quolls in
“In the rainforests of Far North Queensland, we’ve got
the area switched over from the possums to really start targeting the rabbits, and I’m sure the rabbit populations would have gotten much higher in a shorter space of time if the quolls weren’t around,” James says. So along with locating and monitoring quoll colonies in Victoria, the AQC hopes this project will raise awareness about spotted-tailed quolls and their bigger-picture value. Alberto says that elevating
quolls, and their plight, in the public consciousness is especially important, so they don’t go the way of one of their most famous relatives. “We want people to remember that we lost the thylacine, let’s not have the same thing happen with spotted-tailed quoll.” For more information on the AQC project, quolls in general, or to make a donation to support their conservation efforts, go to quolls.org.au or find their Facebook page @ quolls.org.au

Kinglake National Park a decade after Black Saturday. While there are still some signs of the devastating bushfires, the forest has changed immensely in the last ten years, and a level of stability has returned to the ecosystem.

F
ebruary 7 marks the 10th anniversary of Black Saturday, which is often labelled the worst natural disaster in Australia’s history and devastated more than a million acres of land. But the reestablishment of powerful owls in the Kinglake area after almost a decade is a testament to nature’s resilience and heralds a new phase in the regeneration process. Victoria Parks Ranger Tony Fitzgerald, who has worked at Kinglake National Park for more than twenty years, witnessed first-hand the cycle of fire, aftermath, and recovery. “After the fires, the familiar landscape was so altered. The visual landscape, the forest, was totally blackened and also the sound – there
was that silence after a fire when there are no birds. The reaction is quite bodily; it’s not just sight and hearing, it affects your whole body when you walk through a forest that’s smouldering,” Tony says. Among the birds that went silent were the powerful owls. Powerful owls are the largest species of owl in Australia – they’re top-order predators of the nocturnal forest environment – and have a distinctive call, so their absence was noticeable. “You actually hear powerful owls more than you see them. People are familiar with the boobook owl, and the powerful owl’s call is kind of similar to that but slower and deeper. It booms out, two calls like the boobook, but if there’s one in a valley a kilometre away, chances are,
you’ll hear it. But after the fires they went quiet,” Tony says. Danny Rogers, a waterbird specialist at Arthur Rylah Institute of Environmental Research and co-author of The Australian Bird Guide, lived not far from Kinglake at the time of the fires. He had been tracking a breeding pair of powerful owls for decades, taking notes of their nest-sites and offspring, so their disappearance in the wake of the fires was particularly apparent.
habitat demolished by the blaze, but their food supply was also cut off, making an immediate return to the area impossible. “It’s generally held that they would fly away from a fire, and, of course, some would have died, but the main thing is that after the fires, the habitat wasn’t there to support them. Basically, if there are no possums and no gliders, you won’t get owls, because that’s what they feed on mainly,” Tony says.
“They were knocked out by the bushfires.”
Gradually, in the years after the fires, the forest has rebuilt a habitat in which powerful owls can survive, which is no mean feat given that each pair of owls can require many hectares of forest with small to mediumsized marsupials to sustain them.
Not only was the owls’
“The forest is an ever-
“It would have been in the late 80s when I first found their nest, and they were just steadily there that whole time. They used to be a very vocal part of the night there,” he says.

A powerful owl chick. The powerful owl lives up to its name according to Victoria Parks Ranger Tony Fitzgerald: “I’ve maybe seen them up close a number of times that could be counted on two hands over the past twenty years. They’re very majestic, and they’re powerful like the name suggests – their talons are almost the size of a human hand.” Photo courtesy Parks Victoria. changing system; it’s not just this fixed thing that gets burnt and is completely wrecked, it’s been doing this cycle for a long time. A big fire resets it to zero, and it creates this regenerating cycle again. So over the last ten years, there have been different stages, and each stage recreates a type of habitat post-fire,” Tony says. “There are the initial epicormic lignotubers (the shoots from the eucalypts). Then the grasses blow in and get reestablished, and all the mosses. Then, once all the grasses have flowered and set seed, all the rodents that eat those grasses come in, like the bandicoots and antechinus (the marsupial mice). And once they’re in, the little boobook owls that feed on the rodents come in. So it’s just this progression of reestablishing the habitat and the animals that do well in those habitats.” Getting to the stage where 34 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19
powerful owls can once again make Kinglake their home has been an ongoing process. A wildlife study by Arthur Rylah Institute in 2012 surveyed several sites in Kinglake National Park, with powerful owl calls being recorded at only one, and Danny’s first note of a powerful owl call in the area of Kinglake where he’d lived was in 2015. “I just heard one individual call for a few minutes, but I didn’t have time to check it out very carefully – it could have been a bird just passing through, or it could have been a bird setting up a territory.” As for Tony, his first encounter with a powerful owl after Black Saturday was in March of 2017, but he was left with no doubt that they were back. “I was out in the National Park, not far from Kinglake
West, with a volunteer, and we went over a bridge to have a look to see how much water was flowing, and there was a powerful owl bathing – having a bird bath. It was really heartening.” Since then, there have been several other reports of the presence of powerful owls around the Kinglake area. “We’re not back up to prefire levels yet, but I reckon we might be about halfway there. I can think of about three or four valleys that I can go to and have a pretty fair chance of hearing one right now,” Tony says. Creatures at the top of the food chain, such as powerful owls, are among the last forest inhabitants to come back after ecological resetting that happens with bushfire, and their return is a sign that the forest has reached a healthy and relatively stable state. “These apex predators are
a little bit like the icing on the cake. Once they’re in place, the system has a bit of robustness about it,” Tony says. Now that the land has largely healed itself, and one of the final pieces of the ecosystem is back in place with the return of powerful owls, Tony’s advice is to make the most of this stage of the forest’s perpetual cycle and experience those sounds – those signs of life – that were lost immediately after the fires. “I encourage people to get out and see for themselves, enjoy it, and sometimes it’s good to be quiet – just ten minutes of quiet can be useful, if you’re quiet enough, the forest will come out to meet you.” If you would like to report signs of powerful owls in the Murrindindi Shire area, please email info@parks.vic. gov.au

upsurge in the availability of the indigenous citrus varieties with the native finger lime leading the way. It produces thumb-shaped fruits that release a tangy flesh that is sometimes referred to as ‘citrus caviar’ because of its spherical shape. There are a number of
The growing requirements of the native finger lime are similar to those of the more tender types of exotic citrus. In the southern states the native finger lime will certainly need protection from frost. As with all fruit trees you will probably get the best result by seeking out a cultivar that has been propagated vegetatively, usually by
grafting. Feed the plants with a low phosphorus native plant fertiliser at the beginning of spring and again at the end of summer. Yellowing of the new growth can result from iron deficiency that can be treated by a dose of chelated iron or iron sulphate. Mulch your plant to a depth of about 5 cm to keep moisture levels even, a practice that is particularly important during flowering and fruit set. Finger limes are used in the kitchen in a variety of ways and can certainly be used as a direct substitute for exotic limes for drinks, desserts and as a flavour enhancement for savoury dishes such as salads and Asian dishes. In addition to these uses, the little balls of ‘citrus caviar’ (that are extracted by cutting the end off the fruit and gently squeezing) can be used as a decorative and flavour enhancing garnish for a range of recipes limited only by your imagination! gain this summer, man (and woman and child) will be pitted against beast in feats of strength and agility at the Alexandra Pro Rodeo on 12 January. The best professional riders on the circuit will test their skills on the most formidable animals in contests that are sure to have the crowd on the edges of their seats. Both human and animal competitors are highly trained and, on top of that, the rodeo livestock is selectively bred for bucking (supplied by Gary McPhee Rodeo Co) – with both sides armed with ample

T
he Goulburn River is now in full irrigation mode, which doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to be running a banker; earlier than normal water releases mean that there may be a more consistent flow over the warmer months. Mind you, that’s not counting a possible rise from time to time with pressure from power generation over summer. Anglers are still reaping the rewards of Fisheries’ releases back in September with rainbow trout, up to 12 pounds, being caught in the Goulburn River from below the Eildon Pondage to the bridge near Alexandra – and with that, Power Bait in a variety of colours is working on these guys. The more natural looking flies, lures and baits are also working in the Goulburn, Big, Rubicon, Steavenson, and Acheron rivers. If you plan on using baits then scrubbies and maggots are the best choice. If it’s lures you’re using then Celta type spinners, small hard bodies like Rapalas, Daiwa Double Clutch and Tassie Devils in the 7 and 13 grams are a good way to go. Soft plastics in the Zmann 2.5 inch Grubz Motor Oil and black, the Berkley
Shimmas and the Storm Searchbaits cast towards the overhanging trees from a kayak or small tinnie have been known to work well also. Matching the hatch is the best way to describe the choice of flies and during the summer months nymphs, hoppers, and moth patterns should do all right. Eildon Pondage has been well stocked in recent months with 5,000 rainbow trout averaging 180 grams, and 300 brown trout averaging 3 kilograms. But there are plenty of the previously stocked rainbows up to 5 kilograms being picked up as well. Local dough and mudeyes under float on the far side of the Lower Pondage, when the water is up, have been working well. The Power Bait in rainbow, sherbet, lemon twist, chunky cheese and both the salmon eggs in yellow and orange do the job from one end of the Pondage to the other. The Wonder Krocs in various colours such as 60/40, willow leaf, brown scale and brown trout are firing along Bourke Street, Nursery Corner, the bridge and the footy oval and should continue to do so when the Pondage is on the fill. Pink Tassies are a good option on bright clear days, but if you do have overcast conditions switch to the purple no. 26.
Down Riverside Drive, if you’re having a crack along there, when the pondage is full don’t try casting to the middle of the pondage – stay within 20 feet of the bank. There’s a mud flat that extends to the edge of the river course and you will find that the trout will feed along it. Lake Eildon is already showing signs of it being a great summer season for Murray cod, yellow belly and red fin. Murray cod up to 110 centimetres are being caught in the Goulburn, Main, Delatite, Bonnie Doon, Jews Creek and Howqua arms of the lake. And they’re taking a wide variety of lures such as spinner baits, stump jumpers and deep divers in purple, gold, yellows and greens, surface lures in white, black and purples, and even the Motor Oil soft plastics from kayaks near the dam wall. Yellow belly and red fin are taking similar lures but not on the surface. These guys are also hitting soft plastics, scrubbies and yabbies fished amongst the trees. Trout will be heading down a little deeper as the weather warms up but mixing up the Tassie Devils and hard bodies should keep them interested. Catch you later. n 2018 the Murrindindi Shire Council received funding from the Department of Education to provide the community with two supported playgroups.
48 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19
The first playgroup is now held every Monday at the Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House. The second playgroup – at the suggestion of Buxton
Primary School principal Andrew Bagnall – was setup as a ‘bush playgroup’ on the ‘Land for Wildlife’ block adjoining the Buxton Primary School.
Both playgroups are free, available to all children in Murrindindi Shire to attend, and include a program called ‘smalltalk’, which was developed by the Parenting
Enjoying damper fresh from the campfire. Research Centre of Victoria. The ‘smalltalk’ program gives parents (or carers) extra ideas about using everyday opportunities to enrich interactions with their child and give them a great start in their early years. The program is delivered in both the playgroup setting and the family home by parent request.
balanced with group gatherings. The morning’s routine includes songs, morning tea, discussions with the parents and the special story time at the end of the session. This gives the children a sense of familiarity, predictability and regular opportunities to come together and move away into their own space.
Murrindindi Shire Council’s Buxton Bush Playgroup facilitator, Liz Klein says every Thursday morning a group of parents and young children meet at Buxton Primary School, ready to start having fun. Everyone’s anticipation builds as they venture into the bush block.
“The parents are drawn into the wonder of little discoveries made by their child in the outside environment. The parent is right there to explain why we need to be careful when looking under the rocks or in the hollow logs. They are present to support and extend their child’s enquiring mind and encourage acceptable risk taking. All of this is strengthening the relationship between the parents and their children as well as providing further stimulation to the child’s overall development.
“The playgroup provides a different kind of experience for everyone,” Liz says. “I provide a simple structure in the group which allows plenty of time for the children and parents to explore the environment,
“The children and parents experience the joy of being outdoors in all weather, although a contingency indoor space has been made available to us at the school if needed. Parents are encouraged to dress themselves and their children according to the weather to enable full and comfortable engagement with the environment. With a warm jumper or waterproof shoes when necessary, parents and children can follow their whims, especially if that involves exploring a puddle! The requirement for parents to dress for the weather also supports the idea that they are their child’s first teacher and role model during the playgroup session and beyond. “Some of the activities available for the children to experience have included a campfire on which food was cooked, drawing with charcoal, searching for sleepy
bugs, playing in puddles, building with rocks and climbing and balancing on logs,” Liz says. “The campfire was especially popular during the winter months for parents and children alike. It allowed the children to learn about important concepts such as gathering sticks that would burn, understanding how the smoke occurs and the safety aspects that need to be adhered to around fire. “The ’smalltalk’ part is about quality everyday interactions between parent and child. It’s recognising the interesting and stimulating things in the environment which can be found wherever you are. It’s simply about noticing and drawing attention to the world around you for your child. “Teachable moments are everywhere not just at playgroup. The playgroup is a great chance for me Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19 – 49

her own business developing software systems for solicitors. When Lynne sold this business fifteen years later, she didn’t have a clear vision for her future but a chance discovery of a course in Art and Design for Embroidery at Box Hill College of TAFE brought Lynne back to her childhood pursuits. It was during this course that Lynne gained the inspiration for her current work. “In the second year of this course I had a light-bulb moment,” Lynne says. “While the tutor was explaining the major project for that year an image of a red eucalyptus blossom popped into my head. How? Why? Who knows? But from that moment I was hooked.” By the time of the half-year assessment, Lynne had her first branch of the redflowered Eucalyptus leucoxylon ready for consideration and her quest to perfect the technique of making models of Australian plants from thread and wire had begun. As a trail blazer in this art Lynne has had to do everything from scratch. “I often see my work as problem solving that ends in embroidery,” Lynne says with a laugh.

hen you walk into the studio of botanical embroiderer, Lynne Stone, and see samples of her work spread out on the table, it is easy to think you are looking at actual specimens of Australian native flora. The three-dimensional, embroidered replicas that Lynne creates are so intricate and exacting they appear to be the real thing. Lynne is the only person in Australia, and possibly the world, who creates lifelike, botanical models using machine and hand embroidery techniques. She creates these works in a purpose-built studio in Marysville bristling with stateof-the-art sewing machines. 54 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2018/19
Her work is so highly regarded it has been commissioned for displays at the Australian National Museum and the Visitors Centre of the Australian National Botanical Gardens, both in Canberra. Lynne’s passion for sewing began at an early age. Given her father had a business making bridal and sports wear and her mother made all the children’s clothes this is not really surprising. “A sewing machine was permanently set up in our living room. I don’t remember learning to use it; it was just something that I did. By the age of eight I was making my own clothes,” Lynne says. On leaving school, Lynne worked in a wide range of jobs including running
Whether it’s sourcing the right materials or mixing the dyes for the threads, almost everything is a process of trial and error. Even after years of experience, Lynne’s ingenuity is still being put to the test. “I am still trying to conquer the finer points of Hakeas and Callistemons, and Banksias continue to be an aspiration,” Lynne admits. Lynne is relentless in her quest for the perfect materials and techniques. Her search for a flexible, rust-proof wire for plant stems took her to a store in the old quarter of Hanoi, while the challenge of replicating the fluffy, yellow blooms of the Golden Wattle led her to exploring the use of carpet fibre and fake fur. Finding a way to create the pollen on the end of stamens caused Lynne much head-scratching until she remembered puff paint, the substance used to create raised designs on T-shirts. But perhaps her most epic search and discovery mission was when she transformed a Toyota Coaster into a campervan-come-workshop and set off
on a journey around Australia, not just to enjoy life, but also to collect and document the botanical specimens she would ultimately transform into works of art. “I thought I’d go for two years but 10 years later I was still on the road,” Lynne says. “I did the lap of honour around Australia a number of times.” Eventually, in late 2007, Lynne settled into her Marysville home. However, her timing was extremely unfortunate. On 7 February 2009, the Black Saturday bushfires swept through Marysville destroying the town. Lynne had to flee in a tiny car taking nothing but a few clothes, her laptop and a selection of her current works. Her home, campervan and all of her earlier works were completely destroyed. It took some years for Lynne to rebuild her home and her life. However, the fresh start enabled her to construct the perfect workroom for her artistic pursuits. She now has a space with eight double power points and five sewing machines, one of which is a semi-industrial embroidery machine which she programs using the skills she gained as a software developer. Although much of Lynne’s embroidery is done by machine, she still needs to spend many painstaking hours mixing the dyes to get the perfect colours for the flowers and leaves, covering the wire stems with thread and sewing the tiny flower buds and gum nuts that form part of her specimens. After much urging by fellow members of the Machine Embroiderers Group of Embroiderers Guild Victoria, Lynne is now writing a book with step-by-step descriptions of how she creates her botanical models. “I am not writing the book to become famous but rather for posterity. At least when I fall off the perch the knowledge and experience I have will not be lost.” To see if her embroidery techniques could be imparted to others, Lynne held a test class with some top-notch machine embroiderers who, after producing sprigs of Golden Wattle, concluded it was all “too bloody hard.” At the end of the class, one member of the group announced to Lynne, “I have just spent a whole afternoon making little, fluffy, yellow balls and I’ll never do it again. I think you are either incredibly talented or barking mad.” Anyone who knows Lynne and her work would always opt for “incredibly talented” but might also add incredibly ingenious, enterprising and persistent. Spinebills and Kangaroo Paws by Janet Matthews.
Wild flower Exhibition November 30 to January 20 This exhibition features three talented artists ‘floral’ works –Janet Matthews, Jenny Reddin and Geneveive McLean – and complements the wildflower season at nearby Lake Mountain. So why not come to the exhibition then head to Lake Mountain to see the wild flowers? Janet Matthews: her individual style of combining coloured pencil and graphite has been described as ‘weaving magic with pencil’. Her realistic, detailed and gentle drawings of Australian wildlife are full of personality and humour and have won many awards. Janet’s love of drawing and her rapport with ‘critters’ is evident in her portrayal of animals and birds, either in their natural environment or co-habitating in suburbia. Drawing them in family
groups, in pairs of ‘friends’ or in action or play, she captures their personality or “conversation” beautifully. Recently she was awarded the Wildlife Artist of the Year from the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia. Janet exhibits regularly in Australia and overseas. Jenny Reddin: “I can’t figure out whether I am an alchemist who paints or a painter who uses alchemy. Either way, I am a poured paint artist. I blend solutions of pigment, solvent and medium and pour them onto prepared surfaces. The results are generally reminiscent of aerial landscapes or remnants and traces of submerged images.” Geneveive McLean: is a sculptor and painter creating with mixed media and has won several sculpture awards including the Lorne Small Sculpture Prize and the Yering Station Sculpture Prize twice.

n the outskirts of Bonnie Doon, where kangaroos graze in the large house blocks and wedge tailed eagles soar overhead, a small group of woodturners meet each week where they produce a range of items of very high quality. They work in
a well-equipped workshop under the watchful eye of internationally renowned woodturner, Ken Wraight. The group call themselves the ‘Peppin Point Woodturners,’ and they began when Ken Wraight invited this like-minded group of woodturners
from Alexandra to attend his workshop once a week with the aim of developing their skills to competition standard.
The timbers used for these items are mostly Australian, and the hard but colourful outback timbers are often used.
The group is given increasingly challenging projects, which include lidded containers, various bowls, vases and clocks.
Projects tackled are aimed at ensuring a pleasing shape, aligning grain to best advantage and applying a high quality finish. Attention

Below right: Norm McDonald turning the base of a red cedar platter. is also given to ensuring that tools are correctly shaped and sharpened which is necessary for working the hard timbers. This is a group, as opposed to a club, and does not have any hierarchy, preferring to make decisions by consensus. Membership is by invitation only. The group is a member of the ‘Council of Woodworking Clubs’, an umbrella body set up to provide affordable insurance

to woodworking clubs around Australia. Recently members of Peppin Point Woodturners attended the Australian Woodturning Exhibition which is an annual event that began in 1980. It attracts work by woodturners from all over Australia. Ken Wraight has won ‘best of show’ on seven occasions. This year the members entered a range of items in the various sections, and
won sixteen prizes between them. Individually, Norm McDonald won two firsts, two seconds and two thirds, Barry Cleary won two firsts and three seconds, Merv Haggarty won two thirds, Ernie Hunt won two seconds and Jaxon Carlton won a first and a second. In addition, the group won a special award for the greatest number of prizes per member. Next Easter, the Peppin Point Woodturners will be
displaying (and selling) their work at Alexandra Rotary’s Easter Art Show. Last year, they provided a display of their high quality work, as well as setting up a wood lathe at the entry and demonstrating the craft of woodturning. The group is extremely enthusiastic about woodturning, thoroughly enjoying themselves, and are keen to continue developing their skills.
