WHEN it comes to coffee the difference between a good cup and a great cup lies in the freshness of the roasted beans, says Andrew Hall.

Andrew believes attention to quality and taste sets his coffee apart from others.

“By Australian standards it’s a medium to dark roast,” he said.

“It isn’t uncommon to find roasted coffee beans for sale that have been ground and packaged a year before,” Andrew said.

Flavour and freshness aren’t Andrew’s only concerns when it comes to Great Divide Coffee. Ensuring his beans are ethically sourced is also at the forefront of his business philosophy.

Owner and roaster at Great Divide Coffee, Andrew has been hand-roasting coffee beans for more than a decade at his Buxton home. Using organic Arabica beans imported from East Timor, Peru, Papua New Guinea, Columbia, Ethiopia and Brazil, Andrew lovingly roasts them twice a week to ensure his customers are always supplied with a fresh product. “The freshness of a bean is

“Mine are fresh, never more than two weeks old at the most.” After Andrew roasts his beans he creates unique flavour profiles, blending different beans together to meet customers’ tastes. “My coffee is made for what my customers want.” “I look for nutty, chocolate,

“A percentage of everything I sell goes directly to Fair Trade Australia,” Andrew said. The money is used to create better working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for workers, coffee growers and small producers, to build infrastructure and

support people in their local communities. “Sometimes there is no other option for these people except working on coffee plantations.” “A slice of the pie should go to them,” he said. “It’s the right thing to do.” Andrew says he has always had an interest in coffee and what started as a hobby in 2003 has now grown into a thriving business. When Andrew was 15 years old his family moved to Marysville. After meeting his American-born wife Mary he moved to California, where he spent 15 years working Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2015 – 11

It was here Andrew’s passion for coffee really blossomed. “I’ve always enjoyed coffee, but I didn’t really know a lot about it,” Andrew said. A friend in America introduced Andrew to the science behind roasting coffee and extracting unique flavours from the beans. “It developed from there,” Andrew said. “I was always interested in coffee but it was a bit of a mystery.” In 2002 Andrew and his wife moved back to the area where

A year later Great Divide Coffee was born; however commitments back in California meant Andrew and Mary relocated to America once again, selling the business to Buxton residents David Alleway and Diane Gaylard. “The business really grew under them,” Andrew said. By 2008 Andrew and Mary were ready to make the move back to Australia a permanent one. “Here is home,” Andrew said. In 2009 Andrew was at the helm

Pip’s soapbox . . .

Going natural By Tammy Lovett WHEN Pip Guyatt realised her son was suffering from skin irritations she began experimenting. Eight years later and Pip is at the helm of a flourishing business, Dindi Naturals. Soaps, skin products, mists, body creams and even dog wash now bear the name of her business. Pip has just opened a new store in Yarck and has plans to increase her already extensive range of specialty goods. With a background in office management, making soaps and body products was a change for Pip, but one she took in her stride. “It took two years to get a good soap formula,” she said. “A lot of trial and error.” After seeing the positive

effects her products were having on her son, friends and family soon began placing orders and as the demand for Pip’s products grew, Dindi Naturals was born. As Dindi Naturals expanded, Pip’s goal to create natural products that are good for the skin remained at the fore of her business objective and still do today. The name, Dindi Naturals, sums up this ideology. All products are handmade in Murrindindi Shire, using natural, plant-based ingredients that benefit her clients, their pets and the environment. “What goes onto your skin is absorbed into your skin,” Pip said. “If I can’t pronounce the name of something I’m not putting it into my product.” Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2015 – 13

Dindi Naturals does not use toxic or synthetic chemicals; ingredients are palm oil free, environmentally friendly, sourced from areas of fair trade and sustainability and products are not tested on animals. Pip uses Australian and local produce where possible, including olive oil from Murrindindi Shire. “I use plant products, directly from nature,” she said. “A lot of it is edible.” Using natural ingredients also means Pip’s products are more environmentally friendly than their chemical-based counterparts. “I care about the environment and part of it is what goes down the drain,” she said. With a passion for natural fragrances and essential oils, Pip ensures her products stimulate the senses as well as the skin, with carefully blended aroma-therapeutic scents.

“We have over 100 different essential oils we use.” “The scent, essential oils and blending are my areas of interest.” Pip is now in the process of creating natural deodorants and perfumes. Pip’s shop, which opened in April, is testament to just how far she has come. For years Pip made and sold her products from a garden shed until she finally outgrew it. The new shop is light, spacious, and carries Pip’s unique design trademarks. Recycled timber and furnishings provide the perfect backdrop for her range of goods and reinforce her commitment to environmental consciousness. You can purchase Pip’s unique products at Dindi Naturals, 6572 Maroondah Hwy, Yarck, open Wednesday to Sunday, 9.30am 4.30pm. Plant bank . . .

Plant banks – what are they and why do we need them? By Angus Stewart MOST people are familiar with the idea of a seed bank, where packets of seed are stored in closely monitored environments that will ensure their survival for years, and in many cases, decades. This is a great way of storing the precious genetic material that is essential to the future of agriculture and horticulture. However, the idea of a ‘plant bank’ is a more recent concept, that has been made possible by new ways of storing the genetic diversity of the plant kingdom, for those species whose seeds do not store well for extended periods. More about plant banks later. The conservation of plant biodiversity is particularly vital to the survival of not only humankind, but also

most life forms on the planet, as plants are the starting point for the food chains of most other organisms on Earth. Seeds are the easiest way to store the genetic material of a very wide range of species, as nature has devised an extremely efficient package that contains sufficient energy to help the embryo get above the soil, and with a durable exterior to protect the embryo from harsh environmental extremes. Plants that have evolved in parts of the world that are subject to environmental extremes tend to produce seeds that have a variety of dormancy mechanisms that prevent them from all germinating en masse after they have been shed from the parent plant. For instance, most species of wattles produce seeds that

can survive for decades in the soil without germinating until such time as the heat from a bushfire cracks open the hard seed coat and allows water to reach the embryo, triggering the seedling into growth.

every state of Australia, with most being under the care of the botanical gardens of the relevant state. For Victoria, the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne houses the Victorian Conservation Seedbank.

Seeds that have such dormancy mechanisms tend to store for many years if they are dried and kept at low temperatures and low humidity, and are very well suited to the traditional concept of the seed bank.

In recent times it is heartening to see that the individual efforts of each state are now being coordinated by an initiative called the Australian Seed Bank Partnership (www. seedpartnership.org.au/).

Australia is a botanical wonderland with well over 20,000 plant species to be found. However, a significant number of these have habitats that are disappearing due to human activity and so are under threat of extinction.

However, not every species of plant produces seed that is easy to store in a conventional seed bank.

Fortunately, this situation is not going unnoticed as there are seed banks in

For instance, many rainforest plants have fleshy fruits that are consumed by birds and other animals who then distribute the seeds in their manure. Such seeds have a very short ‘shelf life’, and usually germinate Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2015 – 17

‘Praying Mantis’ by Kerry Gouldthorpe picked up the Peoples’ Choice Award at the Yea Camera Club’s Exhibition ‘Snap’ held in January 2015 as part of the Yea Arts Carnivale.

Camera Club increasing exposure By Anthony Mitrow IT has been a story of rapid development for the Yea Camera Club, established seven years ago when the annual Yea Autumn Fest zoomed in on the talent and interest abundant in the area. A photography competition featured in the festival provided the flash of inspiration required and in early April 2008 keen snappers from around the district met with members of the Victorian Amateur Photographic Societies (VAPS), along with the Essendon and Alexandra Camera Clubs, to support the creation of the new group. Inaugural president Judy Hoffman and her committee of amateur shutterbugs set to work on the essential

tasks of setting up the family friendly club with a focus on fun. The welcoming and carefree nature of the club saw members signing up from around the Yea district. Current president Kerry Gouldthorpe said the increasing affordability of digital cameras meant there was a distinct lack of negatives confronting prospective members and she was determined to continue growing the club. “Everyone is welcome regardless of age or where you’re from,” she said. “If you’ve got an interest in photography and are open minded about new experiences and opportunities to meet people and maybe even keen to travel around the

region a bit, this could be for you.” Monthly photo challenges, regular expeditions, presentations and workshops keep members entertained throughout the year, but it is the annual shows and competitions that frame the community’s view of the group. The Yea Arts Carnivale in January and the Yea Show on the fourth Saturday in November feature work by the club and competitions open to all, with great prizes to be won. Additionally, the Yea Spring Photography Competition earlier in November is a stand-alone event which generates significant attention in its own right, again with fantastic prizes, not to mention local stardom, up for grabs.

As well as self-promotion, the club plays a vital role in capturing the visual history and character of the area. “Having a visual record is important I think. Our monthly challenges and annual competitions often have sections like landscapes, birds and insects. There’s a real Murrindindi focus. It’s been developed over the years to draw on what we have here in this area,” Kerry said. “The lady who won our best in show last year is from Mansfield but a lot of her work is from around Murrindindi. She’s gone on to collaborate with the gallery in town, Gallery 34, and put an exhibition on there called Phoenix Rising. “It explores the regrowth and vegetation of the area Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2015 – 21

It’s a really interesting exhibition showing these trees, rivers, landscapes – some of them have burst back into life and some are still dead. It’s powerful and symbolic. “Earlier this year we were approached by the Murrindindi Shire Council to help them record the upcoming demolition and rebuild of the historic Ghin Ghin Bridge which crosses the Goulburn River on the road up to the Highlands. “Two of our members have undertaken this task and

aim to record a series of time lapse images of the process as an historical record for the area. “Being quite new to the club, I love to look back at previous exhibitions too, for trends and patterns year to year.” Kerry was inspired to join the group just two years ago, when she and a friend decided it was high time they picked up some tips on how to improve their amateurish photographic efforts. “We’d been talking about how our photographs were lacking something. We’d send them to print and

when we got them back we’d be disappointed,” she said. “We weren’t real photographers, but we liked to take photos – just everyday situations around town, or occasionally for work at functions and things – and just wanted them to be of a better quality.” They sauntered along to a Yea Camera Club meeting and discovered a group of people deeply passionate about their photography. “Their enthusiasm rubbed off on me. At the time they were looking to fill a few roles on the committee, and I couldn’t say no. In small

Member Alan Cole won a prize in last year’s show with this King Parrot image. communities, sometimes you just really need to get involved,” Kerry said. Under her stewardship the group has continued to grow in size and notoriety, which Kerry attributes to greater exposure. “When I came on board all the teething problems of establishing a new club had been ironed out by the previous president and committee,” she said. “We’ve been tapping into

the media a bit more, trying to get more publicity for the things we do. A bit of momentum and courage helps a lot. “It’s about getting the message out there and just encouraging people to get involved. “There’s a great feeling of teamwork and satisfaction in seeing what you can achieve together that you could never do on your own, and you’re producing something good for the community.

“Building community partnerships is a really important part of it and also very rewarding. This year, for example, we ran a raffle together with the hospital and we were able to give them $1,500. “It’s also very important socially. It keeps people connected. You might go out shooting on your own, but you come together to discuss and analyse afterwards, so it’s a good social exercise, but one that

involves a lot of independent initiative, and time alone reflecting and working. “The idea is really about encouraging each other to challenge the limits of your photography in a supportive environment. You’ve got access to a broader network of people who have similar interests.” For more information email yeacamera@gmail.com, go to yeacameraclub.org.au or search Facebook for the club’s page.

Soldier on . . .

THE second hand bookshop in the main street of Yarck, “Books at Yarck”, has been operating for more than 3 years, providing locals and visitors with a wide range of affordably priced books. With the 100 year anniversary of the 1915 Gallipoli campaign and the beginnings of the Anzac legend, Books at Yarck has expanded its military category. They now offer a small, but comprehensive coverage of the major and minor conflicts that Australian military personnel have been engaged in from the 1914-18 Great War through to Afghanistan. Works

also cover general military history, strategic studies, espionage, weapons and tactics, the social and political impact of war, and life on the home front. The military biography section includes works from high level commanders, middle ranking officers, down to the humble private, airman and sailor. Special themes are regularly featured in our “Spotlight Section”, currently Sir John Monash, and Charles Bean. This often includes some hard to find books. Military aficionados and those with an interest will not be disappointed with the offering, nor with our prices.

Our volume of books and selection of subjects has increased over time, but we can also help customers find books that are not in stock currently. Looking for a novel, but can’t quite remember the title, or the author? No problem – we will put the “book detective” on the case, who can usually identify the book, and can often track down a copy, for a small surcharge. Local history is of interest to many, and we are improving our offering. It usually includes some of the surrounding areas such as Yea, Maindample, Ruffy and Bonnie Doon. Patrons are invited to bring

their coffee, sit on the comfy chesterfields while they make their selections, and can read at their leisure. There are now even more places in Yarck to get excellent coffee, and the village is becoming more of a mecca for the visitor, with 2 new businesses opening at Easter this year. Books at Yarck is open 5 days a week, Thursday to Monday and the other week days in holiday periods. Our usual opening hours are 10:30am to 5pm on weekends, and 11:30am to 3 or 4pm on weekdays. Patrons are now welcome to contact us after hours, and to arrange openings for their convenience.

A stitch in time . . . Brenda Beckett (left) and Sharon Dunn are avid quilters who enjoy the creativity, diversity and company that is the Flowerdale Patchwork & Crafters Group. By Jeni Emmins PATCHWORK, embroidery and quilting can be an allconsuming passion for some. Sewing machines, often more than one, can become almost permanent fixtures at some dining tables; sewing baskets overflow with myriad pieces of fabric of all sizes, shapes, colours, and textures; and the number of patterns and pictures is surpassed only by the number of reels of cotton, buttons and other bits and bobs that are ready to embellish any new project. This is the world of some members of the Flowerdale Patchwork & Crafters Group, which has been run by Sharon Dunn for the past eight years. There is around a dozen or more members who meet at the Flowerdale Community House on Tuesdays from

10am to 2pm (cost is $5, and bring-your-own lunch) and on the first Saturday of each month from 10.30am to 3.30pm (cost is $6; bringyour-own lunch) to indulge their passion. They mix creative flair with a scrounger’s delight in unexpected finds and sense of amazement at the vastly different results they each produce. They also share a social connection that makes their meetings a joy. There is no president or executive committee. “We all just get on really good,” Sharon said. “We discuss everything together and we organise everything together. It’s a really good group.” Over the years, members have come from Strath Creek, Whittlesea, and Kinglake West as well as Flowerdale. Members come

and go according to where their lives are taking them, but Sharon says, they always come back to visit. Founding member Annette Burton, who now lives interstate, is one who still drops in when she can. Another member, who moved from Flowerdale to Doreen makes the trek up the mountain to join her crafty friends. Apart from regular meetings where members have a range of different projects on the go – embroidery, patchwork, hand or machine quilting, knitting, – the group also enjoys workshops and the odd bus trip to different towns to find materials and other useful bits. “We have a great time,” Sharon said. “We go to different towns – it’s a bit like a pub-run but for patchworks.” There is also a charitable

side: members have donated quilts for fire-affected communities in Tasmania and flood affected families in Charlton. “We try and do a couple of quilts when we have time for people when other disasters happen,” Sharon said. The group is now working towards its next exhibition, which will be held on the weekend of 24th and 25th October at the Flowerdale Community House. If past exhibitions are anything to go by, it will be well worth a look. Quilts, wall hangings, cushions, doilies and table runners are among the chief creations. Japanese motifs, French knots, buttons, charms, beads and lace complement soft pastels or bright primary colours to create a feast for the eyes. The group welcomes all new members. Caching the joint . . .

By Anthony Mitrow LAKE Eildon has long been known for its tranquil sparkling waters, spectacular views, lush forest and rolling hills, but another attraction lies just beneath the surface. As well as its natural treasures, the lake is laden with another kind of booty, and it is there to be found. Geocaching is a GPS and mobile app-driven treasure hunt activity that is sweeping the globe and currently boasts more than 6 million players and 2.5 million treasure chests, or ‘caches’, worldwide. While caches have been secreted away in nooks and crannies across Murrindindi for several years, Stephen Handbury of Anvil Angus and Mark Howard from Eildon Real Estate, together with a group of dedicated and intrepid local volunteers, have taken the experience to a whole new level. ‘Hide it and they will come’ is the ethos behind establishing Australia’s first GeoTour - the first in the world to be sponsored by private enterprise. Speaking at a Geocaching tips and techniques event hosted at his Anvil Angus property in Acheron, Stephen said the initiative had already proved to be a great success. “For every ten caches that you

do, you get one favourite point to spend. Our GeoTour became, within days, the most ‘favourited’ tour in the southern hemisphere, and it’s now ranked in the top third of all GeoTours worldwide,” he said.

Above: Lake Eildon provides a stunning backdrop for Australia’s first GeoTour. Below: Lake Eildon GeoTour sponsor Stephen Handbury makes some notes on the trail. Photos courtesy David Hibbert.

“The caches start at Eildon and go all the way to Jamieson, around Mansfield, Bonnie Doon, Merton, Yarck, Alexandra and Thornton. “The most difficult one we’ve set is on the Black Spur up a tree at 56 metres. As far as we’re aware that’s the world’s highest cache at the moment. And we’re looking for a bigger tree – we’d like to get into the 60-70m range.” There’s a primal and romantic aura around the idea of a treasure hunt, and harnessing new technologies to add a fresh and communal aspect clearly resonates – there are more than 13,000 caches in Victoria alone. It has a wide appeal and Stephen, a dedicated Geocacher himself, said the potential benefits to the local area were worth investing a few thousand dollars a year. “I first heard about Geocaching around 2005. In early 2006 I thought I might as well see what it was all about so I went and found one fairly close to here. I was hooked straight away and got right into it for a couple of years,” he said. This commemorative coin marks the establishment of Australia’s first GeoTour, and the first in the world to be privately sponsored. After the devastating 2009 bushfires swept through the shire many of the local caches, including most of those Stephen had planted himself, were destroyed. “That really knocked the wind out of my sails but about a year ago my daughter, on her birthday, asked if we could go find some Geocaches thinking there must be lots of new ones established by now. So we did a few and before I knew it I’d picked up the bug again,” he said. “When we started getting back into it I started thinking about what I could do with Geocaching that will help get people up here. At that stage these ‘Geotours’ were a new thing. I started to investigate what was involved in establishing one. “We approached Council about it and although they didn’t have any money to offer they were extremely helpful in terms of permissions and gave their full support for us to go ahead and do it. “Then it was a case of trying to fund it. I had a chat to Mark Howard at Eildon Real Estate and he was really keen on the idea and came on board with Anvil Angus to pick up the costs. There was also some private money raised to pay for the actual cache containers and the contents.”

Although some caches require specialist equipment such as climbing gear or watercraft, Stephen and the team have tried to maintain the broad appeal of treasure hunting by keeping most caches accessible to most people. “It’s designed so most of the caches on this tour can be done with a two wheel drive car at any time of year,” he said. “In that sense, it’s designed to be easy even though you travel all the way around the lake. Some caches require access from the water – so hopefully we’ll draw more people up with their boats as well. Though the boost in visitor numbers to the area may not always be obvious, it’s a sustainable type of tourism with benefits flowing through the whole local economy. “You don’t just get people up here, but you get them touring around the whole area. That’s what the tour is all about,” Stephen said. “If you just put out a few caches you might get people coming up for a day trip, but with the tour it’s going to take at least a couple of full days to go through them. “People like to feel they’ve completed it, so they tend not to leave caches behind if they can help it, so sometimes people stay up

Geocaches hidden around Lake Eildon contain a great variety of booty. Photo: David Hibbert. for a week checking off every last one of them. “Big events like agricultural shows are great for our towns, but they can put significant pressure on facilities but the spike in the economy dies down as soon as it’s over. “Geocaching on the other hand goes year round and is a constant drawcard. A lot of people prefer to do it in colder months when tourism is down because of the lower risks of snakebites and bushfires. “It even works in with the rail trail which is another great place to stash caches. “Families, singles, couples – it appeals to a massive crosssection of people and there’s not much of an economic barrier because all you need is the free mobile phone app. Anyone can get into it.”

The contents and size of each container varies on a cache by cache basis. Inside could be tools, toys, or other kinds of trinkets, while some simply contain a log book or cryptic hints to uncover the next cache. “People do it for different reasons – some people try to do as many as they can, others try to do only the most difficult and demanding caches,” Stephen said. In each case though, it is the thrill of the hunt that keeps ‘cachers’ coming back for more. For more information and to stay up-to-date with developments and new caches go to australiangeotours.com.au, download the Geocaching app, or search Facebook or Google for Lake Eildon GeoTour. A mountain of fun . . .

A winter wonderland at Lake Mountain ENJOY a day of snow play, snow-shoeing or crosscountry skiing at the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort – a mountain of fun for the whole family. Lake Mountain promises excellent conditions for snow play, tobogganing and of course making your own snowman, thanks to good natural snowfall complemented by stateof-the-art snow-making machines.

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is Australia’s only resort that can produce snow at temperatures of up to 25 degrees thanks to the Wyss Blanc CC 30, a state-of-theart snow-making machine. This unique capability allows snow covered toboggan runs to be open right through the season, regardless of weather or natural snowfall. The family friendly facilities offer snow play and tobogganing, cross-country

skiing and snow-shoeing, with equipment hire conveniently located on the mountain. Family packages are available for advance purchase that include vehicle entry to the mountain, toboggan hire and a lunch voucher for the entire family (skiing packages are also available). Perfect for introducing young family members to the joys of snow, Lake Mountain Alpine Resort

encourages plenty of snowball throwing and exclusively hosts the Australian Snowman Festival inviting everyone to make a snowman and post their picture to Facebook to be in the running for great prizes. 2015 Season Update Australian Snowman Festival The fantastic Australian Snowman Festival will be returning to Lake Mountain

Alpine Resort in 2015 bigger and better than ever. From quirky creations, to towering gentle snow giants, the Australian Snowman Festival allows the imaginations of the young and not so young to run wild. Visitors are encouraged to begin preparations prior to their arrival on the mountain to ensure that the perfect props are brought to the mountain to create the best snowman of the festival. Creative license is encouraged, with bathrobes and bowler hats equally welcome in the pursuit of decorating the perfect snowman.

Snowman’s Village expansion In 2015 the Snowman’s Village will be expanded to house more snowmen, brightly coloured letterboxes, a bigger igloo (room for the family this year), all nestled against beautiful snow gums close to all resort facilities, and the most popular toboggan runs. New snow-shoe trails In 2015 a number of new snow-shoeing trails will be opened, making Lake Mountain the perfect location for snow-shoeing adventures from short hikes to all day adventures. Snow-shoeing provides

children and adults with the perfect introduction to snow sports without the need to have perfected the art of skiing. Explore the peace and tranquillity of the mountain’s renowned cross-country trails to truly appreciate the beauty of an alpine experience.

The establishment of the Nordic Ski Centre will greatly enhance the profile of cross-country skiing at Lake Mountain, improve learning opportunities at the ski school and bring the ski school operations in line with those of European ski resorts.

Nordic Ski Centre

Cross-country skiers will be able to view the Fischer ski and equipment retail range on site, with a fantastic range of demonstration equipment available ensuring that skiers can try before they buy, a rare opportunity for skiers in Australia.

Developed in partnership with Fischer Sports, the Nordic Ski Centre will offer a premium learn to ski experience from beginner to expert whilst providing a dedicated base for the Fischer Race and Demo Centre, the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Why not come and play on the mountain this winter!.

Every dog has its day . . .

WHEN everyone else is having a sleep in on Sunday mornings, there is a dedicated band of people from across the Shire of Murrindindi who are up and about with their dogs. They are the members of Alexandra & District Dog Obedience Club Inc, (ADDOC), who love nothing more than spending time with their dogs. These responsible dog owners are encouraging their puppies and older dogs to become confident and happy family and community members. The club’s instructors train the dogs using positive reinforcement and encourage the use of treats, toys and a happy voice to build a confident dog and handler relationship. Agility training for your dog is also on offer, as is rally obedience and tracking.

ADDOC has been operating for 23 years and the instructors have had many years’ experience working with dogs and people and thoroughly enjoy being able to share their knowledge.

Above: Shelby the Australian Shepherd. Below: Russell with Derrick the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Photo courtesy Marysville Photography.

There is also the benefit of being able to gain new knowledge and friendships, because every member has something to offer. The members of ADDOC love nothing better than showing off with their gorgeous dogs and regularly hold obedience demonstrations at the Alexandra and Yea agricultural shows, Million Paws Walk and the Yea Market. They have also successfully put on ‘mini’ demonstrations for Dame Pattie Menzies Centre and the CWA, where they have not only displayed the talents of their dogs, but have shared their knowledge about the responsibilities of owning a dog and how to safely approach a dog to say hello. A new Kinder Class was introduced earlier this year – a six week course for puppies and their handlers. After completing this class there is an opportunity to progress to the 18 week Family Companion Class where, after fulfilling the requirements of that class, they will be presented with a certificate and sash. Training can be continued with the advanced classes. If you would like more information about ADDOC please contact Julee on 5772 1057.

Give it a bash . . . The Eildon Explorer on show at the Alexandra Easter Fair. IT’S amazing what lifechanging decisions can be made over a good bottle of red wine and a few beers! Taylor Bay residents Glehn Jessop, John Ricardo and Andrew Dredge had always entertained the idea of participating in the Vic Variety Bash, which raises funds for Variety – the Children’s Charity helping children who are sick, disadvantaged or with special needs to live, laugh and learn. The guys all agreed that they

wanted to make a difference and accepted the challenge of the Bash with the goal to raise much-needed funds for the charity. John’s son Darren was also keen to come on board. And so Bash car 169, the Eildon Explorer, came into being and Glehn, John, Andrew and Darren became the Lake Eildon Explorers. The ten day adventure runs from 12th to 22nd August, travelling from Melbourne to Cooktown and finishing in Port Douglas, Queensland.

“What a journey it has been so far! Family and friends of the Lake Eildon Explorers have supported the team through participating in tinrattling events in Melbourne,” spokesperson for the team, Chris Dawson said. To raise awareness of the project the Eildon Explorer has also been on show at the Eildon Easter Market and the Alexandra Easter Fair and will feature at the Alexandra Truck, Ute & Rod Show in June. “The local communities of

Eildon and the surrounding towns have been wonderful in supporting the team through sponsorship. The generosity of the community has been heart warming”, Chris said. The team will also promote Lake Eildon and the surrounding district as a fantastic tourist area. A map of Lake Eildon appears on the bonnet of the car and the boys will be handing out information about the district during their travels north. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2015 – 43

The Lake Eildon Explorers, (from left) Glehn Jessop, Darren Ricardo, Andrew Dredge and John Ricardo tin-rattling in Melbourne recently. Throughout the Bash the Lake Eildon Explorers will visit local towns, stopping at schools to visit the children. They are looking forward to seeing the smiles of children who will be helped with their education, through the purchase of equipment from funds raised. “This team of rookies has been assured that there is

never a dull moment on the Bash with stacks to do; trivia nights, roadside fun stops, entertainment, and a final celebration and awards night in Port Douglas to rival the Oscars.” “The experience has really consolidated the friendship of the team and they are excited to be participating in such an iconic Australian

event. Their message to others who have ever thought about taking part in the Bash is . . . just do it!, “ Chris said. This year will be an exciting event as it marks the 25th anniversary of the Vic Bash. Since the first Bash in 1992, in excess of $20 million has been raised.

On yer bike . . . Dave Livingstone, left, with friend and fellow Black Dog Ride participant John Buckley, en route to Alice Springs during Dave’s first Black Dog Ride.

On yer bike . . . a reason to ride By Tammy Lovett WHEN Dave Livingstone volunteered as a support driver for the Black Dog Ride four years ago, he had no idea how much it would change his life. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44 and mental illness affects one in five Australian’s each year. The Black Dog Ride aims to spark a national conversation about depression and mental health, and to raise funds for suicide prevention services through organised motorcycle rides around Australia. For Buxton resident Dave, it began in 2011, his brotherin-law was suffering from depression and decided to join the Black Dog Ride; however, he needed support.

“I didn’t have a clue what it was,” Dave said. After learning the reasons behind the ride, Dave decided it was a cause he couldn’t turn his back on. “I fell in love with the concept.” “I threw my arms up in the air,” he said. While hundreds of motorcyclists from around Australia rode thousands of kilometres to Alice Springs, Dave acted as a one-man support crew, responsible for fixing breakdowns, providing first aid and carrying equipment.

“Every year I can’t wait to go.” The annual ride, which will take place from August 15 to 22 this year, is open to all members of the community. For Victorian participants the ride will start in Melbourne and finish in Uluru with riders from around the country. Riders will stop in towns along the way, spreading awareness and information on mental health. “When 300 to 400 motorbikes ride through a town it gets people’s attention,” Dave said.

What started as an offer to help others soon turned into a therapy of its own.

Participants come from all over Australia. Many have been affected by mental illness in some way, others come to show their support.

“It was more therapeutic for me than I first gave it credit for,” Dave said.

“It’s the loudest therapy session in the world,” Dave said.

Dave was one of the first support crews to join the ride, making him the longest serving support crew member. He believes the need to raise mental health awareness and challenge the stigmas associated with mental health disorders is critical. “It’s a huge thing,” he said. “Given the trauma many people experienced during the 2009 Black Saturday fires the need for support networks is more important than ever,” Dave said. “After an event like that people have seen things and gone through things they shouldn’t ever have to.” “People don’t like anyone to think they are infallible.” “It might be six years later but that’s when these Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2015 – 47

Trail bike riding on Mount Disappointment By Cara Danieli Mount Disappointment is said to have earned its name after it failed to provide Hume and Hovell with a view of Port Phillip Bay from its peak due to the mountain’s many trees. This may be so; however, the mountain does provide a range of other activities including the 40 kilometre long Mount Disappointment Forest Drive, various walking tracks, picnic areas and camping sites. One of the most popular activities assumed at Mount Disappointment is trail bike riding, and with various tracks, participants in this activity will not be disappointed. Situated in the northern end of the Mount Disappointment State Forest, just 3.5 kilometres from the entrance to the forest, a visitor area serves as an excellent launching place for riders. The trail bike visitor area includes many facilities including toilets, large shelters, picnic tables and seats, as well as information, maps and routes for riders. Mount Disappointment trails provide riders with the opportunity to enjoy the natural features of the forest. Riders are reminded to stay safe at all times. As Mount Disappointment State Forest is a working forest, riders must be aware of log trucks and other heavy machinery that will be sharing the roads. Riders are also asked to respect the environment and others by reducing noise in residential areas, staying on formed forest roads only and taking all litter home. Mount Disappointment has great trails for all licenced riders with registered motorcycles. All riders are encouraged to have fun and stay safe.

Birds . . . Watching birds

the grey shrike thrush By Bob Tate THE grey thrush as we call this bird is more correctly called the grey shrike thrush This is because it belongs to a group of birds, including the butcherbirds, which have a small hook on the end of their top bill. This hook is used to pierce the prey which consists of insects, small birds, nestlings, eggs, frogs and lizards. It is a sedentary bird, living in the same area throughout the year and is found all over Australia except for a few dry areas in the central deserts. It is not correctly a thrush but it is so named because of its melodious calls which will vary with the season. Most commonly the call is a loud tink like a bell. The bird is a dull grey all over with sometimes a little rufous (brown) colour on the back and again sometimes a small white patch between the eyes and the bill (the lores). Variations of this occur in different subspecies around Australia. The immature bird has a striped chest which fades with age. Both sexes are similar. The nest is a bowl shaped affair, often with thick shreds of bark forming most of the material, and is built in the base of a tree or low fork and sometimes on the ground. Human habitation favours them and they will make use of sheds and verandahs to make their nest. I have known several that have made use of verandah ornaments on which to make their nest, and to which they return each year. The grey thrush is a relatively common bird in this district and may be identified by its call quite easily and is generally always found in many of the bushland areas of this shire, and also often in people’s gardens. An easy place to find them is the McKenzie Reserve at the top of Grant Street in Alexandra. A flier of this reserve and of other places to find birds in the area is available in the Alexandra Information Centre.

Eildon fishing report By Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle LAKE Eildon is about to bottom out around the 55 per cent mark for this year and with the water surface temperature dropping, trout are starting to fire up again. Flat line or shallow trolling with one color of lead line or a paravane has been the most successful technique to use of late. Tassie devils are doing well – the old reliable pink has been the number one pick, but mixing them up has also proved successful in the main arm of the lake. Rapalas in the spotted dog and the brown trout pattern and tassie devils around the mouth of Big River are working well. The majority of rainbow trout being caught are near the one and a half pound mark and the browns are a little larger varying from two to four pound, with up to a dozen being caught for a days angling. Reddies have finally started to crank it up with good size and numbers being taken from the dam wall, Taylor Bay and Jerusalem Creek areas; only a few on lures, with the majority caught on

Right: Shaun Homas with a 5lb rainbow trout taken on a Gold Kroc from the Eildon Pondage. scrubbies and cabbies. power bait and dough were shouldn’t see the pondage working. back to the river course at Cod are still doing well on any stage. Also the river had been the troll in the main arm on the darker and purple colors in and around the marinas, as well as on almost any kind of bait you can find. I haven’t had any real thumpers reported of late but a few between 68cm and 86cm have been caught. A couple of nice yellow belly around the five pound mark have been caught on the dam wall using scrubbies. Over the last couple of months the pondage has been stocked with over 1,500 rainbow trout ranging in size from 200gm to 500gm and as per fresh releases the Join us on Facebook for updates & specials

running quite high, which meant you had to fish either the filling of the Pondage with mainly lures or wait until it was full in which case the baits did better. If you fish the Pondage any where in between it’s a lot harder work, this is just a general rule of thumb but does seem to be close to the mark. As we head into winter and the river winds back, the Pondage won’t be up and down as much. The planned winter works by Goulburn Murray Water are still not going to affect the Pondage to any great extent, so we

The Goulburn River, although recently high, has been producing nice brown trout up to five pounds on scrubbies, rapalas and bladed lures. Fly fishermen using bead head nymphs, Dunn and wattle grub pattern have also done well. Anglers targeting the grassy flats and areas close to the river banks have been having the most success. Big River and the Rubicon are still producing small rainbow and brown trout on scrubbies and celtas. Catch you next issue, Gaz.

On the market . .

Stall holders, from left, Angela Logg, Helmut Doerner and Angela Poulter showing a variety of produce available at Kinglake Market.

Home grown, homemade, fresh from us to you! THE Kinglake Produce and Artisan market is overflowing with variety! A humble market first started in 2010 as a small farmers market. It has since changed hands a few times, and is now being run by the Rotary Club of Kinglake. It has seen some tough times, just as the local businesses have, but with a great friendly team of stall holders, volunteers and organisers, the market is growing and boasts a large variety of stalls; fresh

produce, chutneys, jams, plants, hot and cold foods (sweet and savoury), wines, crafts, knitted goods, clay ware, soaps, candles, jewellery, frames, dog treats and coats, great coffee and much more. While you’re finding that treat for yourself or friends the kids can be entertained with a jumping castle, face painting or drawing and painting on easels. There is certainly something on offer for every member of the family – even the four-legged member!

The market is held on the fourth Sunday of the month (December varies) from 10am to 3pm. Special guests and themes depending on the time of year are a feature of this market. We were lucky enough to have Easter Bunny make an appearance at our March market. Come for a Sunday drive, enjoy the market, and check out what the Kinglake township and surrounds has to offer anytime of the year.
