By Emily Friedel DARREN GILBERT has a profound love of Australia’s environment and strives to live in harmony with it. There are no sharp lines defining the border between his existence and that of the surrounding landscape of his Highlands home. Similarly in his work as a professional artist, there is a give-and-take relationship with the natural world. Darren derives inspiration from the environment to produce works that, in turn, shine a light on the preciousness of Australia’s unique landscapes and convey the intrinsic beauty of its inhabitants, including the creatures we tend to take for granted like the common magpie. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2017 – 9

From his light-filled studio, perched on a hilltop beside his home, Darren witnesses the everyday happenings and seasonal cycles of the countryside in which he is embedded. It’s the perfect spot for an artist whose muse is Mother Nature. “The windows frame it,” Darren says of the view from the studio. “You don’t realise how gorgeous it is until you see it framed like that.” Inside the studio, there are remarkably detailed drawings of native birds in various stages of completion, from small preliminary pencilsketches through to large blackand-white ink works. Up the hill a little way is an old shooters’ shack, which serves as the workshop for Darren’s metal sculpting. With its dim lighting, ramshackle appearance, and floor littered with hundreds of thousands of spent rivets, the workshop stands in stark contrast to the studio. And at first glance, the weathered metal sculptures surrounding the shed appear so

different to the highly ordered ink drawings that it’s surprising they were crafted by the same pair of hands. But, as Darren explains, the theme of Australia’s flora, fauna, and terrain are central to both the rustic metal artworks and the ultra-precise, monochrome depictions of wildlife. “I’ve always been interested in Australia and its environment. My dad was an engineer, and he travelled for work, so we got to see a lot of the country and got a great appreciation for what it is. Australia gets ingrained in you, and won’t let you go – we’ve got the best wildlife in the world, and being here in the Highlands, we get to see a lot of it and the cycles it goes through.” Through his and his family’s off-the-grid lifestyle, and their constant work towards self-sufficiency, Darren finds another connection with our native fauna. “Looking at animals in Australia, they have to be selfsufficient, so there’s kind of a parallel between them and us,” he says.

Darren also incorporates the environment into his artistic process in very direct ways. He uses one of the eucalypts that stands in front of his workshop to bend and shape pieces of metal, and he burns wood from fallen trees on his property to heat reclaimed corrugated iron from local buildings – a process producing effects that reflect the relative harshness of our climate. “It’s a very Australian thing for things to weather and change colour and look like they’ve had a hard life,” he says. “You get really nice, interesting textures, and you get the marbling effect when you burn the corrugated iron at a high temperature in the fire pit. It makes interesting shapes and patterns, which you can only get in Australia, going back to the patterns and shapes in the rocks, which are mirrored in my sculptures.” Working on sculptures in the old shooters’ shack has also brought Darren much closer to the local fauna, in a very literal manner. “I’ve had some pretty good adventures in here with snakes and rabbits and mice and spiders – I love it,” he says with a chuckle. Another thread that runs through both Darren’s ink drawings and sculptures is the golden mean, which is a mathematical formula developed by the Ancient Greeks. The golden mean often appears in patterns in nature, such as the spiral arrangement of leaves on certain plants or even the proportions of the human body. It has been studied voraciously by thinkers of all varieties – from philosophers to physicists – and it has held a special fascination for many artists because of its aesthetic appeal in composition. The presence of the golden mean in many elements of Australia’s natural environment has captured Darren’s imagination, and his face lights up when he speaks about this overlap of these two driving forces in his artwork.

“Australian animals take that golden mean to the extreme, almost on the border of breaking it. I like that,” he says. “All the shapes are here,” he adds, pointing to the view outside his studio. “You’ve got our big granite rocks, and if you look at the sculptures, you can see the similarity between the shapes and the rocks and back to the golden mean again.” “That’s why my company is called Monkey Tail Design – because it’s represented by the fern frond, which spirals like the golden mean and looks like a monkey tail.” Much like the cycles of nature Darren witnesses in his daily life in the Highlands, he has come full-circle with his art career. In his youth, he got a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Fine Arts under part scholarship at the Queensland College of Art, but only took the plunge into becoming a full-time artist about ten years ago. In between, he did an apprenticeship as a pastry cook, studied graphic design, and worked as a graphic designer for 15 years. It was actually a graphic design job that sparked Darren’s foray into metal sculpture. “Someone asked me to do a photo shoot of the horoscope calendar when I was graphic designing. Pisces is represented by the two fish, so I used some of the corrugated iron that covered the shack (my workshop) to make the fish, and that’s where it all started. Metal’s now my chosen field.” These days, Darren’s graphic design skills are put to good use creating the meticulous ink drawings, which can take well over a year to plan. Darren does detailed preliminary drawings then manipulates and scales them using graphic design software before beginning work on the final piece. It’s all part of the problem-solving process of design that Darren finds so intriguing and satisfying. “I don’t see any difference between being an artist or an architect or a landscape designer or a waste management facilitator, it’s just problem solving, and it’s the way you solve that problem. The good thing about the arts is solving that problem gives you a buzz,” he says. In his decade working as a full-time artist, Darren’s work has made its way into many homes and businesses around the Murrindindi Shire area, including Sedona Estate Winery in Murrindindi, Nice gift shop in Yea, the Delatite Hotel in Mansfield, and exhibitions at Rustic Simplicity in Alexandra. A few of Darren’s pieces also live in his own backyard on the peaceful hilltop property in the Highlands; metal sculptures by the veggie gardens outside his studio and among the trees surrounding his workshop, blending into the environment that inspired them and embodying Darren’s philosophy towards living with nature. By Emily Friedel IMAGINE THE Rubicon Valley and a chunk of the Earth’s crust around it – about 27km in diameter – sinking into a massive magma chamber, causing a volcanic eruption with worldwide ramifications. Imagine a ring of spectacular explosions around the edge of the magma chamber sending great clouds of hot ash several kilometres high, only to rain down and cover everything in sight. It may be difficult to envision the serene forests of the Rubicon Valley sitting at the centre of a furious ring of volcanic activity, but this is precisely what happened around 365 million years ago. The Rubicon Valley lies in the heart of the Cerberean

Caldera, a supervolcano, which was highly active during the late Devonian period when Australia was still part of the supercontinent Gondwana. “They would have been gigantic eruptions, mainly of ash flows or ignimbrites, and they probably would have had some sort of global effect on the atmosphere,” says Dr Bill Birch, Curator Emeritus at Museum Victoria, describing the Cerberean Caldera’s activity at its climax. “There was some life around at the time, there were some plants and fish, and anything that was in that area would have been completely obliterated.” The Cerberean Caldera was probably active for millions of years. There were smaller eruptions

and periods of dormancy before the enormous chunk of Earth’s crust broke away taking the Rubicon Valley with it and sank a couple of kilometres down into the magma chamber during the late Devonian. This was the last time the supervolcano erupted – it quite literally went out with a bang. “There’s some early volcanism represented, isolated flows that are preserved underneath the main thick volcanic eruptions, and there were lake horizons in there with fish, so there were some quiet periods between eruptions in the early stage. Then there was this massive collapse, and that’s when you had the very thick ash flows,” Dr Birch says. Since that final collapse,

erosion has lowered the landscape of that time by up to several hundreds of metres, but today’s familiar landscape features still show evidence of the volcanic rocks. The Rubicon Rhyolite is a thick sheet of rock that erupted from the Cerberean Caldera and, even after millions of years, it is seen in the prominent scarps around the edges of the Cerberean Ranges, the volcanic rock that forms Steavensons Falls, and the cuttings along Snobs Creek Road. “The Rubicon Rhyolite erupted as a gigantic cloud of hot ash, what’s known as pyroclastic flow: very turbulent and very hot – 800 degrees Celsius – with churning, turbulent crystals, ash, and pieces of the magma that had been blown to bits. Eventually, it all

Steavensons Falls is formed by volcanic rock that erupted from the Cerberean Caldera supervolcano during the late Devonian period. settled, but because it was so hot and so thick, everything stuck together, and you get what’s called welding, so it just looks like a solid rock,” Dr Birch says. “It’s a remarkable rock actually; it’s a unique rock. It contains crystals of a mineral called iron cordierite, and it’s the only known occurrence of this mineral in a volcanic rock in the world as far as we know.” The Lake Mountain Rhyodacite sits on top of the Rubicon Rhyolite and was formed in much the same way. The Lake Mountain Rhyodacite created the high, level plateau of the Cerberean Ranges, and Snobs Creek Falls follow a

large fracture through the sheet of rock. While there is still clear evidence of the Cerberean Caldera’s impact on the landscape, its appearance today belies the magnitude of the turmoil it caused during its peak activity, and this is part of the reason why both locals and tourists are mostly unaware of its existence. “It’s quite a subdued structure, it’s very worn down, and it just looks like a range of forested hills,” Dr Birch says. “You can’t always tell how exciting a geological event has been from the landscape as it is now.” And, even though the magma chamber beneath

the Rubicon Valley and surrounding area has long since cooled and stabilised, the Cerberean Caldera still holds some tantalising mysteries. “There are still puzzles to be worked out,” Dr Birch says. “The whole structure of the caldera is a bit strange: it’s circular, so there’s obviously been collapse around a ring fracture, but there are also radial fractures, which focus at the middle, and these radial fractures are harder to explain. The radial fractures suggest that there might have been some sort of really big explosion at depth where the faults focus right underneath it, where the magma probably exploded.”

So the next time you’re wandering through the cool, ferny undergrowth of the Rubicon Valley, or exploring the surrounding mountains and enjoying the magnificent views from their peaks, stop for a moment and consider the history of the ground on which you’re standing and the geological significance of the area. “As you walk or drive through the forest, appreciate that there’s some fantastic geology underneath,” Dr Birch says. (RFPG) promotes the significant biodiversity, scenic, historical, and cultural heritage values of our magnificent mountain forests as well as the exceptional tourism, education, and recreation opportunities in these areas and their associated economic benefits. A key concern of the Group is the long-term sustainable management of these special forests. Current large-scale logging operations in the montane ash forests (mountain ash, alpine ash, and shining gum) of the Central Highlands, including Rubicon State Forest, combined with the devastation caused by the 2009 Black Saturday bushfire, are rapidly compromising a sustainable future for these majestic forest environments.

Loss of habitats of varying ages, loss of habitat connectivity, and changes to plant-and-animal interrelationships within the forest including invasive weeds like blackberries, are critical considerations for maintaining forest biodiversity. Equally, the health and wellbeing of local communities are dependent on the essential environmental services provided by the integrity of biodiverse forests, such as clean air and water, carbon storage, and a place for recreation. RFPG has recently organised several popular tours of Rubicon State Forest to help our local community value its unique natural, historical, and cultural features – the group believes that tourism, recreation, and a healthy environment are integral to

a sustainable future for the Murrindindi community.

Plants and animals of the mountain forests

During the day, many small birds repeatedly call as they flit through the bushes and tall tree canopies in search of insects and nectar, while the unmistakable chuckles of kookaburras and whip-cracks of whip birds are often heard at dawn and dusk.

A diversity of plants and animals occur in the complex structure of mature montane ash forests. At night, the forests come alive with tiny feathertail gliders, eastern pygmy possums, various bats, and small mammals like bush rats, marsupial Antechinus, and long-nosed bandicoots scurrying through the leaf litter. There are also noisy mountain brushtail possums (known as bobucks), sleek black-and-white greater gliders feeding high up in the tallest trees, the powerful owl with its distinctive call, and even lyrebirds roosting in vegetation above ground. Haunting calls of the yellowbellied glider and sooty owl add to the mystery of these

Mountain ash, Eucalyptus regnans, is the world’s tallest flowering plant and grows quickly, although it takes well over 100 years to reach maturity. Mature montane ash forests store huge amounts of carbon and are particularly important for protecting water quality and quantity in our catchments. The variety of understory plants in the montane forests includes many that have edible fruits, flowers, and underground tubers, with some also having valuable medicinal uses. Moss-covered Antarctic beech temperate rainforest communities alongside waterways like the Royston River provide a cool, dark environment for ferns, mosses, and fungi. Antarctic or southern beech, Nothofagus cunninghamii is an important species in the origins, evolution, and distribution of plants in the Southern Hemisphere. The mature montane ash forests – with hollow-bearing trees and dead stags, a diversity of understory plants, ferns, mosses, and fungi – provide essential habitat for the critically endangered Leadbeater’s possum, Gymnobelideus leadbeateri, vulnerable greater glider, Petauroides volans, and sooty owl, Tyto tenebricosa. Waterways in the area also provide refuge for threatened fauna like the barred galaxias, Galaxias fuscus. Leadbeater’s possum has a very restricted distribution, being largely confined to the montane ash forests of the Central Highlands. Habitat loss and fragmentation, including loss of forests of different ages and hollowbearing trees, primarily caused by current logging operations and recent bushfires, threaten its longterm survival. Rubicon Valley Historic Area The Rubicon Valley Historic Area is now recognised on the Victorian Heritage Register and includes features such as the recently reconstructed ‘15000 siphon’ trestle bridge on part of the original tramline, an undulating 10km return walk along the tramline to Rubicon dam, open aqueduct, huge pipeline with the odd leak, various sawmill structures, and Royston power station. These structures reflect the fascinating history associated with Victoria’s first hydroelectricity generation scheme dating back to 1929. By Chrissi Ridd TWO PICKLED Kick Arse Tomato Chutney is a sweet and spicy alternative to pizza sauce. You can buy Two Pickled produce at the Alexandra Visitor Information Centre, Alexandra FoodWorks or Two Pickled Farm Gate, ‘Burnside’ 84 Scrubby Creek Road, Molesworth. INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 2 pizza bases – (home made or shop bought) • 85g (1/4 cup) Two Pickled Kick Arse Tomato Chutney • 100g (1 cup) coarsely grated fresh mozzarella • 100g thinly sliced prosciutto • 4 fresh figs, quartered • Baby rocket, to serve • Two Pickled Manzanillo extra virgin olive oil, to drizzle • Lemon wedges, to serve (optional)

Step 1 Preheat oven to 220C/200C fan forced. Place pizza bases on 2 baking trays. Spread with Kick Arse Tomato Chutney. Sprinkle with mozzarella. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden and melted. Step 2 Arrange prosciutto on pizzas. Top with figs and sprinkle with rocket. Season with pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Serve with lemon wedges.

It’s also a fun activity for the kids during winter holidays – they can make the paper, use it for art projects, then plant it out in spring! Best of all, this seed paper is a brilliant way to recycle used paper at home.

WHAT TO DO

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

1. Shred, cut, or tear up your paper.

• Scrap paper of just about any sort. Writing paper, newspaper, flyers, old books, non-waxed cardboard, magazines (except high gloss). Adding a small amount of coloured paper will tint your seed paper.

2. Soak paper in warm water for about 30 minutes. Thick paper or cardboard will need longer – soak until soft and soggy – (a).

• Seeds. Small or flat seeds work best. Many herb and spring flower seeds are ideal, and they are great for making seed paper to plant in pots.

(b) The soggy paper blends easily into a runny pulp.

• A flat strainer. You can make one by fixing a stiff, fine mesh screen to a wooden frame (an old picture frame will do the trick). I use an old rabbit hutch door with fly screen stapled onto it – see what you have lying around the house!

3. Create pulp by blending your wet paper in a blender or using an eggbeater. You may need to add more water to make this easier; you can add as much water as you like – (b). 4. Add pulp to a tub full of water. The pulp should be able to float around easily. 5. Mix seeds into the pulpy water. At this stage you can also add things to decorate your paper such as petals or dried leaves – (c).

• Blender or eggbeater and bowl.

6. Dip your strainer into the tub and pull it up slowly to catch the pulp mixture. Gently moving the strainer from side to side will help you catch an even layer of pulp.

• Waxed paper (baking paper does the job).

7. Pull the strainer out of the water and let the water drain through – (d).

• Rags larger than your strainer (old towels or t-shirts are perfect).

8. Place the strainer on rags (pulp side up) to absorb the water.

• A tub big enough to comfortably fit your strainer.

(e) Pressing excess moisture out of the paper pulp on the strainer. The waxed paper won’t stick to the paper pulp.

Put the waxed paper over the pulp on the strainer and press out the excess water using your hands – (e).

10. Very carefully, peel the waxed paper away from the pulp. You can reuse the waxed paper for squeezing the water out of the next sheets of pulp – (f). 11. Lay out a dry rag and turn the strainer over on it (pulp side down), then gently tap the sheet of pulp off onto the rag and lift the screen away – (g). 12. You can then repeat the process from step 6 to create another sheet of paper, which can be laid out on a dry rag over the previous sheet.

14. Once the paper is completely dry, pull it away from the rags. 15. Have fun creating things with your seed paper then planting it! – (h). 16. An alternative to making large sheets of paper is to simply press some pulp and seed mixture into cookie cutters sitting on rags – this is a fantastic way to make things like party decorations.

13. Leave the pile of seed paper sheets separated by rags to dry overnight in a warm dry place. If it’s very cold, they might take a bit longer.

Stones Outstation Historic Hut in Lake Eildon National Park.

WINTER IS upon us and sometimes it seems like a good time to stay inside by a crackling fire. But if you’re willing to rug up and venture out, there’s lots of beauty to be enjoyed in the parks and forests of Murrindindi. Here are a few of our top picks in parks this winter. Stones Outstation Historic Hut Head out to Lake Eildon National Park to enjoy an attraction that is such a wellkept secret even lots of the locals don’t know about it. The Stones Outstation Hut is in the Fraser Block of the park and has recently been restored to its former glory with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers. The nineteenth century Stone family’s grazing property included a family home as well as an outstation and stockyards. The hut is constructed of

timber palings lining the inside of a notched log framework with a corrugated iron roof. Following its restoration by the Idlers 4WD Club of Victoria and the Victorian High Country Huts Association in partnership with Parks Victoria, it remains a fine example of bush carpentry. If you’re up for a decent walk you can experience a bit of the life of early Australian settlers. The walk starts at Wallaby Bay Carpark in the Fraser Block of the park. The track to the hut is 9km and 2.5 hours long – so an 18km, 5-hour round trip. The track follows the lake’s edge so is a gentle shady walk. Enjoy the box and peppermint forest, and walk past the scenic Cook Point and School Point. Camping is not permitted inside the hut, however there is a walk-in/boat based

campground available at Mountaineer Creek 4km to the north. Go to www.parks.vic.gov. au and search Lake Eildon National Park for more information. Spot a lyrebird in Kinglake Winter is the perfect time to spot lyrebirds in Kinglake National Park. The top location for hearing and seeing these talented mimics is at Masons Falls. Tread lightly and tell the kids to keep quiet on the short easy walking track to the falls and you should be able to hear the lyrebirds in action. As a bonus, Masons Falls are usually flowing well during winter so you will be rewarded with a great photo opportunity at the end of the walking track. A top walk If you’re looking for a great walk around the Kinglake

area, then you can’t go past a loop walk that starts at the pretty Jehosaphat Gully picnic area in Kinglake National Park and takes about two hours. The tracks meander through some of the more shaded damp areas so it’s a lush green walk that takes you past cascades and a nice stream. Enjoy walking amongst the towering mountain ash and mountain grey gums. Start out on the Shelley Harris track to Mt Jerusalem, then follow the connecting track into Kinglake township, perhaps pop in to a local store for a coffee to warm up, then head back to Jehosaphat Gully along another connecting track. If a picnic or barbecue is on the agenda make the most of the picnic area, toilets, shelter, tables, and free barbecues at Jehosaphat Gully. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2017 – 31

By Dr Kate Murray RABBITS ARE becoming increasingly popular as household pets, but it is important to realise that a rabbit is not just a small cat or dog. The following is a summary of the basics on rabbit care, but if you are a first time rabbit owner or have any questions, then a visit to the vet’s may be in order. Housing Rabbits can be housed indoors or outdoors, generally within a hutch, but with supervised free-range roaming allowed. It is important that the floor of the hutch not be made of wire, as this can cause inflammation and infection of the feet (pododermatitis). If the floor is made of wire, it should be liberally covered in sheets of newspaper or hay to prevent trauma. Outdoor hutches should be covered in flyscreen to keep out mosquitoes, which

can transmit fatal viruses such as myxomatosis and calicivirus. They should also be sturdy enough to prevent predators, such as foxes, from being able to get inside. It is possible to litter train rabbits, so placing a litter tray with hay or recycled paper litter pellets can help with keeping the hutch clean. Rabbits do not withstand hot temperatures well at all, so it is important that a hutch is placed in an area with adequate shade. On hot days, provision of a cooling device (such as an empty milk bottle filled with water and frozen) can help to prevent heat stress. Diet A good diet is essential for a rabbit’s health and wellbeing. Rabbits do not tolerate sugars in their diet – dried fruits and carob treats can cause gastrointestinal upsets. High fat foods, such as

sunflower seeds, can lead to obesity issues. If given the opportunity, rabbits often choose to eat these ‘tastier’ foods over the healthier options. For these reasons, commercially available pellet/seed/fruit mixes are not advisable.

and behavioural issues, but more importantly, it can prevent the development of nasty diseases. Female rabbits that are not desexed are at very high risk for the development of uterine cancer. Vaccinations

Even plain pellet diets are not recommended, as a rabbit’s teeth are continually erupting. If a soft diet is fed (such as hay processed into commercial pellets), the teeth are not worn down at a fast enough rate, causing overgrowth of teeth and their roots. Abscesses and problems with the eyes and nasal passages can then ensue.

Rabbits should be vaccinated against calicivirus when they are kittens and then traditionally have been given a booster once a year. However, as we have a new strain of calicivirus in circulation, we now suggest vaccinating adult rabbits twice yearly. It does not guarantee full protection, but can reduce the risk of disease.

The best diet for a rabbit consists of ad lib good quality grass hay (such as Timothy hay), as well as daily fibrous vegetables.

Discovering the indigenous history of the Yea Wetlands.

AT THE Y WATER DISCOVERY CENTRE IN YEA NAIDOC Week runs from 2 to 9 July under the theme ‘Our Languages Matter’.

Week with a range of educational and fun activities for all ages.

Indigenous language plays an essential role in cultural identity and cultural revival, also linking people to their land and water. It expresses knowledge about law, geography, history, caring for country, family, and so much more.

Join Angela Tenburren (Taungurung representative) on Sunday 1st July at 1 pm for a ‘Walk in the Wetlands’. Angela will discuss the indigenous plants of the Yea Wetlands and their traditional uses. The walk will conclude with a ‘Taste of Taungurung’ afternoon tea at the Y Water Discovery Centre. There will also be a display of tools and baskets made from indigenous plants with their Taungurung names. For the kids, there will be an Indigenous Wetlands Walk Trail Quiz and Sand Wizard Art on offer.

The importance, resilience, and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages – the original languages of this nation – will be the focus of national celebrations marking NAIDOC Week 2017. The Taungurung people were the first inhabitants of the Murrindindi area, and many place names within the Murrindindi Shire are indigenous language words. The Taungurung word for Murrindindi is ‘Murrumdoorandi’, which means ‘place of mists, mountain’. The Y Water Discovery Centre at Yea Wetlands will be celebrating NAIDOC

On Wednesday 5th July the Centre will host school holiday activities at 10 am and 2 pm. Join talented indigenous artist Cassie Leatham to create bush animals from natural materials found and collected in the Yea Wetlands. Bookings are required for these activities. Eildon fishing report By Gazza from Eildon Bait and Tackle WITH THE weather cooling down recently, Lake Eildon surface temperatures have dropped rapidly and trout activity has fired up. Flat line trolling Tassie devils in the pink, clown, frog and minnow patterns have been the most effective technique lately, with some success during the middle of the day using Paravanes to get that little bit deeper.

The best areas to target have been Big River from the mouth up past Taylor’s Creek, the main arm, Jerusalem Creek and Fraser camping ground. Murray cod and yellow belly are still about but certainly less active during the cooler months. If you are chasing these guys, trolling or casting spinner baits and deep divers in purple and chartreuse are the way to go. Reddies are plentiful if you happen on the right tree using scrubbies, but the majority are small in size. Eildon Pondage has recently been stocked with over 2,000 rainbow and brown trout varying in size, but there were quite a few exbrood stock in the mix that are averaging 3lb and, as you would expect, the Power Baits and local dough are the best options for baits. Every now and then it is worth using worms and mud eyes as the trout that have been in the pondage longer do have a tendency to chase the more natural food sources. During winter the rivers and streams will dirty up with the rain inflows, so you’ll need to adjust accordingly. Bait-wise worms and maggots will be the way to go but soft plastics, small hard bodies and bladed spinners will be worth a shot as well. Do remember the rivers will be closed from midnight Monday 12 June (long weekend) until midnight Friday 1 September. However both the Eildon Pondage and Lake Eildon are open to all species of fish all year round and size and bag limits are still applicable. Catch you next issue.

THE HERITAGE Machinery Festival returns to the Alexandra Timber Tramway & Museum on the weekend of 9 and 10 September 2017.

The Festival highlights a vast array of antique machinery at work and there will be steam train rides all weekend.

The Alexandra Timber Tramway & Museum focuses on recovering and preserving items of industrial tramway and logging machinery, with emphasis on the nearby Rubicon Ranges, which were a centre of logging production for nearly 50 years.

The Timber Tramway is the ideal venue for enthusiasts to display their machines and for the general public to view rare agricultural and mechanical treasures from the past. The Heritage Machinery Festival also marks the start of the thirteenth year of the Alexandra Market, which is held on the second Saturday of each month from September to May from 9 am to 1 pm on the grounds of the Timber Tramway. The Alexandra Market has

The group has accumulated an impressive collection of industrial rolling stock and machinery items that now constitutes one of the largest machinery collections in the country. As well as stationary engines, the range includes farm implements, driven machinery, tractors, and commercial trucks.

Over the past 30 years, the Timber Tramway’s direct historical link with the Rubicon Forest has been the restoration of the two original diesel locomotives used on the Rubicon to Alexandra timber tramway. They were the first diesel locomotives built in Victoria and were manufactured by Kelly and Lewis in Springvale in the mid-1930s. The museum owns or has on permanent loan ten locomotives, including steam, diesel and petrol powered, many of which are restored and operational. The Timber Tramway’s collection also includes the largest private collection of Malcolm Moore locomotives in Australia and the only remaining operational Day’s timber tramway tractor in Australia.

The Timber Tramway is a tourist railway accredited through Transport Safety Victoria and operates under the Rail Safety (Local Operations) Act 2006. A twofoot (610mm) gauge railway meanders around the station grounds, which also features a museum and workshop facilities. There are currently plans to upgrade the site, including expanding the track and creating more display space to accommodate the huge number of exhibits in the collection. This may also enable establishment of a machinery preservation group for those with an interest in machinery restoration. By Emily Friedel ON WEDNESDAYS, half of the big Community Shed behind Yea Library transforms into a hive of activity. Busy hands transform lumps of clay into works of art, while busy tongues chat about pretty much anything. A vase made using the raku method, which involves pulling red-hot pottery from a custom-made raku kiln and covering it with organic, combustible materials to produce unique and unpredictable effects. Marg Mahon started the Yea Pottery Studio with a small group of people in 1975 after being inspired by the Arts Train, which had come through town with various craft demonstrations. The

pottery demo was a hit, and Marg was keen to try her hand at it. “I just wanted to do pottery, I was so enthusiastic about it,” Marg says. “You take a lump of clay, which is nothing really, and you turn it into something. It’s wonderful.” More than forty years later, though members have come and gone and the location of the studio has changed several times, the group is still going strong. The Yea Pottery Studio operates

mostly on funds from its small membership fees, the resourcefulness of its members and their families – everyone chips in where they can – and donations of equipment and materials. The Community Shed, which has been a boon for the group, was funded by Yea Community House and the Yea & District Community Branch of the Bendigo Bank. These days, the twelve or so people who fill the pottery studio with their creativity and cheer each Wednesday range from complete beginners to formally trained potters and one member, Coral Robben, has an extensive background in commercial ceramics. Sue Chehab, a longtime member with both a formal education in pottery and a wealth of experience, says that between them, they have the skills to do any type of pottery imaginable. Not only is the pottery group blessed with a diverse pool of skills, but they also have a very well-equipped studio: six pottery wheels, two gas kilns, a slab roller, all manner of hand tools,

moulds, the raw ingredients to make their own glazes, and a collection of ceramics literature – enough to make the eyes of both seasoned and novice potters light up. Members usually work on their own projects during the Wednesday sessions, making everything from dinnerware to sculptures, with the more experienced craftspeople helping the less experienced when needed. Every now and again the group runs a special activity, such as their raku day held every winter where friends and family of members come along to join in the fun. The raku day involves firing pottery pieces in a specially adapted 40-gallon drum and pulling them out while red hot. The pieces are then covered with organic, combustible materials like leaves or ash, which react with the glaze and clay to produce unpredictable and stunning results. With all the fire, smoke, and unique effects, the raku method is exciting enough to keep even nonpotters captivated, and it’s

a wonderful way for the members of the Yea Pottery Studio to share what they do with loved ones. “It’s a great day, everyone loves it. We all bring food and share it. The children get involved, too. It’s a fun day because you can fire your pots and take them straight home,” Marg says. The Yea Pottery Studio members also jump at the chance to get involved with community projects and other community groups. They have held workshops for local primary school children to make Father’s Day gifts, worked with students to make a mural at Yea High School, and they made the platypus sculpture, ‘Flat Plat’, at the Y Water Discovery Centre. Yea Pottery Studio also brought the local community together to brighten up the nearby public toilets with their ‘Toil Art’ project. This project began in 2007, and the tiles that now decorate the outside walls of the toilets were two years in the making. Local primary and secondary students, Rosebank Hostel residents,

and Yea Bowling Club members all contributed to the artwork, which highlights the unique beauty of the Yea River and Yea Wetlands. The group has accomplished a great deal over the years – a pleasant surprise for Marg, who didn’t expect the group to run for as long as it has and believes her passion for pottery has helped fuel it. “I suppose it was only because I had the interest and the enthusiasm to keep it going,” she says. Walking into the bustling, smiling group on a Wednesday morning it certainly feels like Marg’s enthusiasm for ceramics is contagious and there is no doubt her initiative has brought people together and introduced many to the joys of working with clay over the years. in turn, was borne out of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Acheron Mechanics Institute Hall in June 2014 and was inspired in part by a visit from Dr Ruth Pullin, a Melbournebased independent art historian and expert on the life and works of Eugene von Guérard, who visited, sketched, and painted the Alexandra and district landscape some 150 years ago. Eugene von Guérard, one of Australia’s most renowned and prolific colonial artists, whilst on his Goulburn River and north-eastern Victoria expedition, journeyed from Melbourne through the Acheron Valley in 1862, sketchbooks in hand, with the view to both scientifically and artistically document the region. Von Guérard is

famous for his panoramas, for example, his paintings of the Cathedral Ranges, and his famous Waterfall, Strath Creek, which are superb examples of his scientific style; but he also sketched views of rivers and creeks, trees, farm dwellings and local scenes. This 2017 exhibition is to further mark von Guerard’s visit to the Acheron Valley and surrounds; to recognise the valuable contribution he made historically and artistically; to encourage contemporary artists to engage with the natural and rural worlds around us, whilst contemplating their aesthetic visions for Alexandra and district’s future; and to manifest them creatively, either inspired by, and/or in the spirit of von Guérard.

The festival is open to people of all ages and abilities including kids (entries due Wednesday 12 July). The popular category ‘Murrindindi Madness’ will return, with this year’s theme being ‘Aussie Bush’ and two new categories have been added: ‘Anything Goes Beanie’ and ‘Winter Warmers’. ‘Teapot Beanie’, ‘Most Down to Earth Beanie’, ‘Funky Fibre Fusion’ and ‘Traditional’ categories are all returning favourites. You can knit, crochet, sew or felt your beanies or maybe you have another medium in mind. The two-day festival promises to provide fun and frivolity as amazing beanies of all shapes and sizes will be donated, displayed and available to purchase throughout the event. The Festival also includes an auction of some of the most creative beanies and the Beanie Bazaar on Saturday. “She hasn’t done this before.”

I COULD hear her screaming next to me, the sound echoing in my ears; the only other noise I could distinguish was the thumping of my heart crashing against my chest.

Earlier that day, the vastness of the Sahara lay in the far distance before me, and bustling Marrakesh with its thriving souks lay behind.

I looked down and could no longer make out the outline of my hand in the darkness, but I could feel the pull of rope in my palm. It was late, much too late to be on a mountain, guiding a mule along a narrow path with my petrified mum on its back. It was much too late indeed, and yet there I was. Morocco lies to the far north-west corner of the African continent, bordered by Algeria and the Western Sahara and hemmed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Its population of more than 34 million live within its diverse geographical regions – amongst its mountainous interior, along its coastlines, inside its heaving cities, and amid its desert landscapes. “Look after your mum,” those words kept replaying over in my mind.

The sun was warm on my face even though the icy breeze froze my nose and fingertips, and there I was, standing on the summit of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s tallest peak, 4167 meters high. But I wasn’t alone; and while I was exploding with excitement, my mum was busy calculating what would make anybody climb anything higher than a foot ladder and just how on earth she now found herself confronting her biggest fear: height. It’s said people aren’t afraid of height, it’s the fear of falling that gets them, and as I looked to the earth thousands of meters below, I suddenly thought perhaps this wasn’t one of my best ideas. Morocco is a vibrant country; its predominantly Muslim inhabitants speak a mix of languages, Berber, Arabic, and French. Its history is rich, and its endlessly winding

bazaars are melting pots of Moroccan culture, dancing to the beat of their own drum, a pulse running through them. A world away in the sleepy mountain village of Imlil the day before all was quiet; my mum and I sat eating breakfast and sipping warm tea. I found a small, ramshackle shop and asked the man behind the counter for a map. He wanted far too much, I haggled over the price in typical Moroccan fashion but eventually conceded it was something I couldn’t do without and parted with my dirhams. I found myself on the map and worked out which way to point it, while rugged mountain men watched me trace a path with my finger between the myriad of lines. The men were impressed. “You don’t need a guide,” they concluded; I had passed their test. In winter Mt Toubkal is covered in snow, but the snows had almost completely disappeared when we arrived. In summer the climb to the top isn’t a technical one, in winter it’s a different story, and people have died in their attempts.

I could feel the altitude right away, even in Imlil at 1740m. The air was thin, and it was hard to breathe. By mid-afternoon, we had hiked along the valley floor and wound our way further into the Atlas Mountains. Eventually, the refuge came into sight, and we were greeted with more tea and more weathered mountain men.
