Above: One of Eddie Sabljak’s prized native orchids in flower, the rare red factor Dendrobium speciosum var. boreale ‘New Rex’, which was found in the wild in North Queensland and is now the only one of its kind in a collection. Photo page 13: Ferns as far as the eye can see in the retail nursery at Fern Acres, which is embedded in Kinglake’s magnificent cool temperate rainforest. Inset: Eddie Sabljak. By Emily Friedel

T

wenty-five years ago, the orchid bug bit Eddie Sabljak. The orchids were an interest that led him and wife Robyn down a plant-lined path, and today, along with a stunning collection of native orchids, they own one of the biggest retail fern nurseries in Australia: the aptly named Fern Acres in Kinglake. Eddie is a tall man with a big grey moustache and soft voice. While walking around the expansive hothouses on his and Robyn’s property, he remarks, “I say to people: in life, you bump into the right person.” In Eddie’s case, he must have married the right person, because it was Robyn’s father, a fern enthusiast and orchid collector, who piqued Eddie’s interest in plants. 14 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018

When he started his orchid collection, Eddie was working as a fitter and turner, and Robyn was a stay-at-home mum. But it seems they were destined to become plant people. A guy Eddie met through work knew someone who needed to get rid of a bunch of birches and Japanese maples.

it was crafts, and then we started adding orchids into it because when you’re an orchid grower, you always have divisions.”

Then another chance encounter took their plantselling endeavours to the next stage.

And their move to the nursery in Kinglake appears to have been on the cards for a long time. Around ten years before Eddie started that fateful orchid collection, Robyn’s father had told them about Fern Acres, and they went there to buy native orchids. Later, they went there to purchase ferns to sell at markets. On one of those trips to pick up ferns, they came away with more than they’d expected: they agreed to buy the entire nursery.

“I bumped into a boilermaker whose wife did markets, and we got talking. Then Robyn and I decided we could do markets as well. Initially,

“We decided to come to Fern Acres to buy some ferns for the market. It was a winter’s day and, over a cup of coffee in the house, we shook

“I put my hand up, and that got the ball rolling. We potted them up, made up a little sign, and we were selling them from home,” Eddie says.

hands on the deal. The rest is history.” At the time, their two daughters were three and five years old, and the nursery business wasn’t turning a profit, so building the business up meant hard graft. Eddie drove 140 kilometres to work every day and took a detour in the evenings to pick up some wholesale ferns before going home. “I’d work in Bayswater, clock off, drive to Coach Road Ferns in Monbulk, put a hundred six-inch pots in my little Ford Laser all around me, and that’s how we initially got going,” he says, evoking a somewhat comical image of a tall man in a small car filled with ferns. The first three years were challenging, but Eddie and Robyn stuck with it and

made the nursery productive again. Now, 22 years later, they have a thriving retail nursery nestled in Kinglake’s exquisite rainforest and huge hothouses packed with thousands of ferns. They supply places like the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, the Melbourne Museum (the next time you see the forest gallery there, think of Fern Acres), and several prominent vertical garden companies. The whole operation runs on a staff of five, which includes their daughter Amber, the nursery’s leading hand.

Being plant enthusiasts, but not qualified horticulturalists, Eddie and Robyn have mostly learned about fern culture through experience. “We make our own potting mix, and we’ve come up with a formula that works – we learned by trial. We’ve hit our recipe; it’s worked for 20 years, so we don’t alter it.” They have an eco-friendly approach to caring for their plants and as Eddie continues through the hothouse, he pauses for a moment to draw attention to

some resident wildlife. “You just heard one of our froggies singing. Whenever you’re weeding or raking, you turn around, and there are little wrens behind you picking at the grubs.” For visitors to the nursery, a wander along the narrow, fern-lined paths of the retail nursery makes it clear that the local birds appreciate Eddie’s and Robyn’s efforts as much as the plant buyers. The calls of yellow-tailed cockatoos ring out above, and flashes of red and green can be seen as the king

parrots hop around in the treetops. Strolling through the retail nursery is also an eye-opener in terms of the enormous variety of ferns available. From the all-time favourites like maiden hairs and birds nest ferns to gigantic elk horns to several different species of tree ferns. There are also ferns there that most people have never laid eyes on before, like the undulate hart’s tongue fern with its ruffled, lime-green leaves. While ferns dominate the nursery – Eddie describes

Eddie, who is very much at home in a fern-filled hothouse, holding an all-time foliage favourite among houseplant enthusiasts: a maidenhair fern.

Ferns come in a startling array of shapes and sizes, like this undulate hart’s tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium var. undulatum). them as their “bread and butter” – there are other types of plants dotted around the place, mostly allies of ferns such as lilly pillies, grass trees, and palms. There is also a small slice of one of the hothouses dedicated to the native orchids that started it all, and Eddie brings new members of the Australasian Native Orchid Society here to show them different ways of growing orchids.

Among Eddie’s native orchids is a prized specimen of Dendrobium speciosum, which originally belonged to Robyn’s father. “There’s one plant in here that doesn’t look like too much, but it’s got a twothousand dollar bounty on its head. It’s a king orchid from two hours west of Cairns, found in the wild by my father-in-law about 15 years ago. Most speciosum will have cream, white or

orange petals and usually a white or similar labellum, but this one has a solid red labellum, so it’s a one-off. “They took four pieces of this original plant, and my father-in-law had it for years, then I bought his collection. We just recently found out the other piece that was in Townsville went to mush, and the original plant is still in the bush, but no one’s been able to find it again.” As Eddie speaks of this

precious plant, his face lights up in a way that suggests he is right where he’s meant to be among the green foliage of thousands of plants. But when he’s asked what he loves most about growing plants, his simple answer stands in contrast to the web of interconnected events that put him there in that hothouse: “It’s relaxing; it’s rewarding.” For more information go to fernacres.com.au or call (03) 5786 5031.

ustralians are notorious for their love of building big houses. We Aussies held the title for the biggest average house size in the world until the United States surpassed us a couple of years ago. But there is a growing social movement in Australia countering this desire to erect MacMansions: the Tiny House Movement. In March this year, the Australian Tiny House Movement took a significant step forward when Darren Hughes from Tiny Houses Australia presented a talk at the Alexandra Library and met with members of the Murrindindi Shire Council Planning Unit. “This presentation in Murrindindi Shire was the first step towards opening that conversation with councils as well,” Darren says. Starting this dialogue with councils is crucial because even though the idea of a pint-sized dwelling seems simple, it creates controversy in practice.

There is no absolute definition of what constitutes ‘tiny’ when it comes to dwellings, but it’s generally accepted that a ‘tiny house’ is under 37 square metres. To put this into perspective, a study commissioned by CommSec last year found that the average new house built in Australia in 2016–17 was 233.3 square metres. Some councils have minimum size requirements for dwellings, which may automatically preclude those falling into the above description of a tiny house. Murrindindi Shire doesn’t have minimum building or room size restrictions, but Murrindindi Shire Council General Manager of Infrastructure and Development Stuart McConnell points out in a written response that “Our building regulations do specify a minimum ceiling height however, so this might have some impact on ‘tiny house’ designs”. Along with potential size issues, the Tiny House Movement is all about living simply and in a more environmentally

sustainable fashion, which usually means going off-the-grid, and this can add an extra layer of complication to obtaining planning permits. “If the ‘tiny house’ is being occupied within town boundaries or in an area zoned residential, there are basic requirements about the standards of toilets, disposal of grey water (such as sink water) and drainage, as well as a minimum water supply. Within a serviced township, permanently occupied dwellings are required to be linked into the reticulated sewer networks as septic tanks and other sewage management systems are not permitted,” Mr McConnell writes. And one popular type of tiny house, the tiny house on wheels (THOW), seems to throw a decent-sized spanner in the works for councils because it refuses to fit comfortably into existing housing laws and regulations. “With councils, their issue is that they’re a new thing; they’re not technically a Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018 – 19

Photo courtesty Vina Lustado. living in tiny houses on wheels or run some sort of trial where they can monitor the situation, then we will be off and running,” Darren says. Murrindindi Shire Councillor Rebecca Bowles has a long-standing interest in the Tiny House Movement and was among those attending Darren’s presentation at Alexandra Library. Cr Bowles has high hopes for the community in the Murrindindi Shire to be at the forefront of the Tiny House Movement in Australia. “I’d love to see that Murrindindi Shire can be really progressive in this space,” she says.

caravan, they’re similar to a caravan but in many ways completely different because people are building these with the intent of living in them as a permanent structure, like a traditional house. So it’s a real grey area,” Darren says.

option – it appears that it’s only a matter of time before Australian councils allow people to live permanently in miniature buildings on wheels.

“If the ‘tiny house’ is on wheels, potential issues arise based on where it is parked and how permanently it is going to be there. Council can step through these with anyone who is interested in building or transporting a ‘tiny house’,” Mr McConnell writes.

In 2016, the city of Fresno, California, in the US adjusted their zoning to legalise the use of THOW as permanent living quarters in the backyards of singlefamily houses, and other cities are now set to follow suit. Proponents of the Tiny House Movement in Australia are hopeful that these US precedents will make the process happen more quickly over here.

However, with interest in small-scale living snowballing in Australia – and with tiny houses built on trailers being a particularly affordable and flexible

“All it would take in Australia is for one council to say, ‘Well let’s look at this and see how it can fit in’. If we can get one council in Australia to either legalise

Cr Bowles already has plans for a tiny house project after being selected for the Rivers and Ranges Community Leadership Program earlier this year. The project aims to provide accommodation for people in need and is inspired by the ‘pocket neighbourhoods’ – planned communities of small residences – appearing all over the US. “What we thought we’d do is get the community to build a tiny house [on wheels]. We’ve got a wealth of knowledge within all our Men’s Sheds, we can get the building and electrical TAFE students involved, and even within the CFA there is a wealth of knowledge about building because most of them are tradespeople. The project is in its very early stages at the moment, but that’s the idea: to look at

Another example of a miniature home, Vina’s Tiny House by Sol Haus Design (www.solhausdesign.com). Photo courtesty Vina Lustado. transitional/permanent housing using tiny houses,” Cr Bowles says. Cr Bowles sees the potential for THOW to provide temporary housing while people get back on their feet, but is more inspired by their potential value as a long-term solution. “I like the idea of transitional housing, but I actually much prefer the idea of permanent pocket neighbourhoods of tiny houses, so people can live permanently rather than having to transition onto somewhere else, especially if they have started to become a community member,” she says. As well as giving people homes when they’re in dire need, advocates of tiny houses believe going small is a solution for people from all walks of life. Darren says the movement attracts everyone from those who just want to downsize, live simply, and focus on what truly matters in life – relationships and experience – to those who are rapidly being priced out of the housing market. The demographics represented at the Alexandra Library presentation may be an indication that the latter group sees tiny houses as a viable alternative to being stuck in the rental market for the rest of their lives.

“It was an excellent turnout. It was interesting because a lot of those turn outs you find are an older crowd, but with this one there were quite a few of the younger cohort there, which was good. I think the interest is because of the price of housing has gone exponentially up, and this is their way of asking how can we get into the market but do it on a much more sustainable level and not a consumerist level,” Cr Bowles says. “A lot of people feel like they’re on this scary roller coaster and there’s no way out, either ridiculously high rents or stress and financial pressure of a mortgage, so this concept does provide a way out for some people,” Darren says. Mr McConnell’s response also indicates that he sees the upsides to tiny houses and Council’s Planning Unit is open to looking at tiny house proposals and evaluating them based on existing regulations. “The Murrindindi Planning Scheme encourages a diversity of housing stock in the region, we are interested to work with proponents around ‘tiny house’ proposals,” Mr McConnell writes. “‘Tiny houses’ can be an option for lower cost construction than ‘full size’ houses, and therefore represent improved

accessibility to home ownership. Secondly, with reduced size comes a reduced environmental impact, both in terms of the construction materials used and ongoing service provision to the dwelling as some ‘tiny houses’ are built with ‘off-grid’ living in mind.” Plans for a Council roundtable discussion on tiny houses are also in the works, according to Cr Bowles, which may turn out to be another significant step forward for the Tiny House Movement in Australia. But for residents bucking against Australia’s huge house-trend and wanting to see the Tiny House Movement get a foothold in the Murrindindi Shire, Cr Bowles suggest that it needs to be driven by grassroots action. “We actually need to get the community behind it to be able to create it. We need community support and know-how.” For more information on Tiny Houses Australia, connect with them over at www. ading neck-deep through insects doesn’t sound appealing to most of us. But, according to bat expert Robert Bender, this is precisely what we’d be doing if it weren’t for the millions of microbats that fill our night skies. As their name suggests, microbats are very small bats, but you may be surprised by just how tiny they are. “If you hold up your thumb, that’s a really big microbat, and if you hold up one joint of your little finger, that’s a really small microbat,” Robert says. In fact, one species of

microbat lives on the very edge of what is physiologically possible for mammalian organisms. The little forest bat, which is one of the smallest species of bat in the world, is found throughout much of Victoria, including the Murrindindi Shire region. “So the question is: how small can an animal be and still function successfully as a mammal? And the answer is: about the size of a little forest bat. It weighs about three grams when it’s fully grown, which is not much more than a ten-cent piece,” Robert says. “Now their babies obviously are smaller, and they are Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018 – 23

Above: The little forest bat (Vespadelus vulturnus), is Australia’s smallest mammal and one of the smallest mammals in the world. Photo courtesy Terry Reardon. Below: The eastern freetail bat (Mormopterus norfolkensis) is another species of microbat found in the Murrindindi Shire and among the many species that rely on the hollows of old-growth trees for survival.

bald, so they haven’t got fur to keep them warm. You can’t have anything smaller than the smallest bat’s baby and have it maintain its body heat, and if it can’t maintain its body heat, it’s dead. So it’s at the limit of what can be functioning as a mammal.” Unlike their better-known, larger counterparts, the flying foxes, Australian microbats are all insectivores. And, despite their diminutive stature, they put a serious dent in the insect population on any night that’s warm enough for them to be out foraging. “If you think about Gould’s wattled bat – every bat box project in Australia has lots and lots of Gould’s wattled bats – they weigh about fifteen grams, which is a bit more than a fifty-cent piece. They feed about 250 days a year, and each night they eat 24 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018

about half their own body weight – if you tried doing that you would burst. But they do because flying burns up an enormous amount of energy,” Robert says. “So if you’re a little bat, and you weigh fifteen grams, you’re eating about seven grams of insects a night, and you do that for 250 nights a year. That’s one and three-quarters of a kilo of insects going through this little fifteen-gram body over a 12-month period. And that’s just one bat, so if you have a million bats, which Melbourne probably has, that’s 1,750 tons of insects in a year. Just think about what those insects would be doing if the bats didn’t gobble them up, they’d be making life very, very unpleasant for you.” Microbats use echolocation to navigate and find their

tucker, which means they’re incredibly rowdy little creatures and spend their nights shrieking at the tops of their lungs. But we humans are mostly unaware of their nocturnal noise because it’s beyond what our ears are capable of detecting. “What they do is scream at the top of their voices, and they pick up the echoes coming back from these teeny weeny insects. So they’re sending out these screams, which are sort of like lighthouse beams; they’re really finely calibrated things pointing in a very narrow direction, and what they’ll know is whether there’s an insect in that direction. As soon as they repeat their signal and find an insect where they just pointed, they go for it. Many bats eat an insect about every 15 to 20 seconds,” Robert says.

“The very high-pitched calls of all microbats except one are outside our hearing range, so there’s all this screeching going on, and we can’t hear anything. There’s one we can just barely hear because it’s just within our hearing range, the whitestriped freetail bat. If you’re out on a warm night, and it’s quiet, you will actually hear these little white-striped freetail bats squeaking, and what they’re doing is hoping to find their dinner.” We should also be hoping they find their dinner, not just so we don’t live in a world piled high with creepy crawlies; their role as voracious insect-eaters makes them protectors of all sorts of plant life, including our food crops. Unfortunately, several microbat species in Australia are under threat, making it much harder for them to protect the plants and us from a barrage of bugs. The Australasian Bat Society describes the Australasian region as a ‘hotspot’ for their diversity – Australia alone boasts 83 different species of these itty bitty critters – but it is also the region with the highest number of species at risk. Habitat loss is a significant issue for some microbats, especially those that can’t adapt to human encroachment. “About half a dozen species of microbats live in enormous families in caves, sometimes hundreds of

thousands in one cave and the rest of them live in tree hollows. So they’re waiting for trees to grow hollows and have enough space in them for a little group of bats to fit in, usually one up to maybe 20 or 25 bats at the most,” Robert says. The removal of old growth trees, or parts of them, in both urban and rural areas is synonymous with the removal of potential homes for many microbats. Given that it takes over 100 years of growth, maturity, and decay to replace hollowbearing trees, there is no quick fix for this problem. And much to the dismay of bat conservationists, bat boxes are not an attractive alternative to most microbats. Robert, who is in charge of two bat box projects in Melbourne, one of which is among the longest running studies of its type in the world, has found that only one microbat species is an avid fan of the boxes, despite extensive experimenting to perfect the box design. “Some bats can adapt to living in human structures and the ones that we find in our bat boxes. The Gould’s wattled bat is what’s called an urban adaptor – anything we can throw at it, it can cope with. So in my two bat box projects, the boxes have essentially attracted this urban adaptor species, which are so widespread and abundant they’re of no conservation concern whatever,” he says. “There has long been a thought that if you chop down a forest, and you put up some bat boxes you have, in effect, replaced the function of all the hollows that used to be in the forest. What we have been discovering is that is simply

not true. If you chop down a forest that’s got ten species of bats and you put up boxes that attract one species of bat, you have done immeasurable harm to the other nine species.” Aside from providing dwellings, old trees serve up a smorgasbord of insects for microbats – that ancient gum standing by itself in the middle of a cleared property may be much more valuable than it looks. “People have done a lot of research around these old paddock trees and found the insect life is just fantastic and the bat life is fantastic because they commute across the paddock to this lonely paddock tree and they have a feast,” Robert says. Even with the struggles some microbats have finding a good home these days, a colony of threatened eastern horseshoe bats has managed to get itself some prime real estate in Murrindindi Shire. The bats are residing in an abandoned mine in the Gobur Goldfields and were surveyed by the Upper Goulburn Landcare Network last winter with the help of ecologist and bat expert Rob Gration. The colony appeared to be thriving with a count

Top: The lesser long-eared bat (Nyctophilus geoffroyi) with its radar-like ears, which can measure almost half the length of its body, and (above) the eastern bent-wing bat (Miniopterus schreibersii oceanensis) are two more species of microbats helping to keep Murrindindi Shire’s insect population under control. Photos courtesy Rob Gration. of close to 40 individuals, which is a positive sign given eastern horseshoe bats are one of the four mammal species listed as vulnerable to extinction in the Goulburn Broken Catchment area. The eastern horseshoe bats hanging out in Gobur are just one of around 17 species living in our area and saving us from being overrun by invertebrates. While many of us are oblivious to their good works, Robert suggests they are unsung heroes, allowing us to live on this planet in

comfort, and deserve more of our attention. “There is a very strong connection between the lives of humans and the ongoing successful lives of bats. So your best friends on planet Earth are little bats because they make planet Earth habitable for things that don’t want to be spending their life wading through insects.” For more information on Australia’s microbats, including fact sheets with plenty of advice, go to ausbats.org.au Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018 – 25

Tania, who is now Buxton’s resident garlic farmer, returned to the area in 2008 to help her father with his cattle after he’d had a heart attack. When she came back, Tania met up with her now-husband Marco, whom she hadn’t seen for 27 years and decided to stay.

uxton now has its very own garlic farmer. On a small plot behind the Nareen Cabins, Australian red hardneck and white softneck bulbs, along with a few speciality varieties from Tassie, are living on a diet of composted chook manure, seaweed fertiliser, and gentle winter sunshine. And if last year’s crop is anything to go by, this garlic is more than happy having its roots in this little patch of Buxton’s river flats. Tania van Amsterdam started Blackrange Garlic in 2016 with a small trial crop. Her father Ray Donkin, who owns the land, encouraged her to

try growing something. After doing a bit of research, Tania thought garlic was a good bet. “A lot of articles that I read said we’re always running out of Australian garlic, so I thought I might be able to fill a pocket in the market, even if it’s just in this area,” Tania says. The trial run was successful, and Tania decided to take a chance on growing garlic fulltime. So last year, she planted 36,000 bulbs. “I just thought I’d have a go. I was probably a bit overambitious at first,” she laughs.

Armed only with the knowhow of the average backyard veggie grower, Tania relied on her work ethic and support from friends and family to make it happen. “I’ve grown a little bit of produce at home, no more than the normal person having a go at this or that – I could never get my corn right! But I’ve had a lot of advice from people. I grew up with a guy in Healesville who’s a viticulturist and also manages a few orchard farms in the Yarra Valley and Murrindindi areas. He said to me, ‘Someone owes me a favour, I’ll send him up with a truckload of mature chook manure, chuck it in

the ground, plant your garlic, and just let it go’. So that’s exactly what I did.” Working through anything the winter weather could throw at her, including a hail storm, Tania tended her garlic and tried to keep on top of the weeds – an enormous job for just one pair of hands. “It’s been a hard slog,” Tania says. Like the planting, Tania did the harvesting by hand with a few helpers. Tania’s husband Marco made the labour-intensive process more manageable with an addition to the tractor. “I have a bar on the back of Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018 – 27

the tractor that my husband made that runs underneath the beds and lifts them. So you’ve still got to go and pull the garlic out, but you’re not digging it out with a shovel,” Tania says. Marco’s latest invention to make Tania’s life easier is a roller, which fits behind the bedder of the tractor, for flattening the soil and punching holes for planting. “It’s awesome! It’s saving me at least two hours of manual labour each row.” When last year’s harvest was over, Tania was left with much more garlic than she’d expected – all that hard work had clearly paid off, but also brought new challenges like quickly finding more suitable storage space. “We got quite a few hundred kilos out of it, which was a bit of a shock. We took it home, and it was like, ‘Oh my god, what have we done?’” Inclement weather during the harvest threw Tania another curveball that has made her get creative with her saleable products. “We got caught in the four days of rain, you know that really bad rain, and we were in the middle of harvesting. I haven’t lost the garlic, but it’s lost all its paper. I’ve probably got a hundred kilos or more of that, which is why I started dehydrating and pickling it, and I’m starting to do some Himalayan salt with garlic and some garlic and herb salt combinations using herbs from my garden or friends’ gardens. I also want to make a natural pest control spray for me to use and to sell,” she says. Hard slog: Tania harvesting last year’s crop, which was her first full-scale garlic growing endeavour, and – much to Tania’s surprise – yielded a few hundred kilos. in Australia, so opting for Aussie-grown is much better. most of them hold a steady temperature all the time. A lot of people leave it on the kitchen bench, sit it on their windowsill, or put it in the fridge.” Along with fresh garlic and garlic products for culinary purposes, Tania is selling carefully selected cloves for people to grow at home and has some handy tips for the backyard grower to get more out of their garlic. “Locally sourced garlic is great because genetically it’s used to the soil and the way the temperature fluctuates here. Garlic grows by the size of the clove, so the larger the

Given that Tania was still working her way through 2017’s massive harvest while planting this year’s crop, her growing advice is undoubtedly worth heeding. here is lots to experience in nature during winter in Murrindindi. Within a few minutes’ drive from the township of Kinglake is Jehosaphat Gully in the Kinglake National Park. This was a popular site before the Black Saturday bushfires and even though the facilities have been rebuilt, visitor numbers are still low. Bring a picnic and use the free barbecues and facilities or bring your walking shoes and see firsthand how the forest and fern gullies have regrown since the Black Saturday bushfire. There are three walking tracks leaving from the Jehosaphat Gully picnic area. Shelley Harris Track – 2.5kms one way (5kms return). The walk takes you through wet forest with mountain ash trees, fern gullies, and the sound of water cascading down a mountain creek. The track is a Grade 2 walking track, which is suitable for inexperienced walkers but has no wheelchair access. Alternatively, you can continue from the end of Shelley Harris Track along Mt Jerusalem track and back into Kinglake, then along the Kinglake link track back to Jehosaphat Gully (approximately 6kms). 32 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018

Lavers Circuit – a short Grade 2 track that starts from Shelley Harris Track and loops back to the picnic area (455m). Lavers Circuit Extension – a slightly longer Grade 3 walking track loop (800m) starts along Shelley Harris Track and loops back to the picnic area. Suitable for most ages and fitness levels, some bushwalking experience recommended. Winter is a great time to visit waterfalls in Kinglake National Park especially after a heavy rain event. Enjoy a picnic in the beautiful surroundings of the Masons Falls picnic area. Set among towering gums it’s a beautiful spot to plan your walk or just stop for lunch. There are large picnic shelters, lots of tables, free barbecues and toilet facilities There are several short walks that can also be combined to form a full day walk of around 13km. Masons Falls Walk (700m one way) leads to the spectacular Masons Falls lookout. Or you also could take a 1.5km loop walk under the towering canopy at the nearby Wombelano Falls. To plan your visit, see the Parks Victoria website: www.parks.vic. gov.au or call 13 1963

Lyrebirds – if you’re walking to Masons Falls keep quiet and you might hear a lyrebird in action. These masters of mimicry can imitate many sounds including bird calls, chainsaws and even humans. Koalas – in 2017 about 400 koalas were relocated to Kinglake National Park from French Island, where there was an overabundant population. The koalas have now dispersed and are right at home within the park so if you look up you might just spot one. Wombats – you’re more likely to see a wombat at night when they prefer to feed. During the day they like to stay safely hidden in their burrows. Some burrows are right on the edge of walking tracks, however as the burrows can be up to 30m long it’s unlikely you’ll get to see a wombat in its burrow. Wallabies – you can often see a wallaby eating fresh grass on the sides of roads and tracks during the day, but they’ll quickly hop away as people or vehicles approach.

Fishing Report by Gaz from Eildon Bait & Tackle idnight Monday 11th June, long weekend closes all tailrace rivers below lake Eildon to all fishing, and this is in effect all the way down the Goulburn to Trawool. The rivers above Lake Eildon are closed to all trout and

M

salmonoid fishing and they reopen at midnight on Friday 31 August. With the reopening of the rivers don’t forget Saturday 1 September for the Goulburn Fishing Festival, where young anglers can learn how to fish and there are heaps of prizes and give-aways. Not to mention a wide variety of

stands with the latest and greatest fishing gear and tips as well as regular tours of the Snobs Creek Fish Hatchery where you get to see your fishing licence money at work. Also remember that Lake Eildon and the Eildon Pondage are open to all angling all year round, so you

still have a place to chase the trout during the colder months. Recent low oxygen levels has seen trout catch numbers slow in the local area but now that the Goulburn River has been wound back due to irrigation finishing and with that there has been an increase in the oxygen

levels the trout have fired up again. Power bait in the salmon eggs and drifting scrubbies have been the best bait to use, while the small hard bodies such as the Daiwa jointed Dr Minnows cast from kayaks towards the willows has been working very well for brown trout up to 2lb. Snobs Creek has seen rainbow trout up to 4lb and brown trout up to 7.5lb being caught on small hard bodies as well. With recent escapes from the salmon farm on the Rubicon River 36 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018

brook trout up to 4lb are in good numbers and even a few Atlantic salmon have been picked up amongst them.

Eildon Pondage will be a little more predictable with its highs and lows now that irrigation has finished, but the areas to target won’t change that much. The shallows near Nursery Corner and up near the Cemetery Point are well worth using flies such as the woolly buggers, caddis and streamer styles.

From the mouth feeding into the Goulburn River all the way to the upper reaches of the Rubicon River it’s been pretty busy, a few have even been picked up in the Goulburn closer to Alexandra. Bead head nymph for flies, minnow pattern in the soft plastics, small hard bodies, blue fox Celtas, scrubbies and maggots have all had their share of

The small rainbow trout around the 200gm mark from the most recent release are taking power bait in the rainbow and sherbet, and the local dough. Mud eyes, both couta and spider, are working for the larger brown and rainbow trout up to 9lb, but other methods such as minnow soft plastics, gold Kroc, super dupers, green and yellow Tassie devils

and Celta type lure are also working well. As I’ve said before if the Pondage does appear to be low with mud flats exposed target Riverside Drive or the corner of Bourke Street near the gates, but once it’s full the opposite side is the place to be. The rear of the Pondage Caravan Park is also a great place to target with lemon twist power bait, Krocs and mud eye. On the lake during the cooler months the trout are up nearer to the surface and flat line trolling Tassie Devils has proven again to be the way to go, with pink being the most successful colour at the moment taking a very nice 64cm brown trout. Murray cod have slowed a little but the odd 76cm fella is still being picked up slow trolling red and black spinner baits. Red fin can be found amongst the trees in good size and number using scrubbies, bobbers and drop shotting soft plastics around the 18ft mark. Catch you next time, Gaz

D

riving around Murrindindi Shire, it’s easy to look out the window at the bits of bush running along the roadsides and not give them a second thought. But these strips of vegetation are often blessed with a startling diversity of native life and, in some cases, may be one of the few places rare species find refuge. The Ribbons of Remnant Roadsides (RRR) Project aims to protect these areas of roadside bushland and raise public awareness of their conservation value. The project, which is a collaboration between Upper Goulburn Landcare Network (UGLN) and Murrindindi Shire Council, is funded through the Victorian Government’s Threatened Species Protection Initiative and is now in its third round. The roadsides chosen for the project all get the same treatment: weed control, tree planting, installation of nest boxes, along with botanical and wildlife surveys. Several threatened species have been observed and recorded in the surveys, highlighting how vital roadsides are as havens for native flora and fauna. “In Kinglake, we’ve got a plant called the roundleaf pomaderris, which is significant in areas that were burnt in the 2009 fire. It’s a critically endangered plant. Before the fires, it was down to only 145 known individuals in the entire world, and they were mainly around Toolangi and

Burns Road in Glenburn, which was one of the roads selected for the project and given some TLC – including weed removal and tree planting – by volunteers from various community groups. Photo courtesy Chris Cobern. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018 – 39

Above: one of the roadside residents captured on camera: a mountain brushtail possum or bobuck. Left: sugar gliders making good use of one of the nest boxes installed as part of the Ribbons of Remnant Roadsides Project. Photos courtesy Chris Cobern. Kinglake,” says UGLN Coordinator, Chris Cobern. “So even though the plant wasn’t known to exist before the fires on these roads, the seed must have been in the soil waiting for a fire to come along, then they’ve germinated, and now we’ve got dozens of them growing along our roadsides.” Rare birds such as diamond firetail finches and brown treecreepers are also making use of our roadsides, as well as animals like brush-tailed phascogales and sugar gliders. Aside from making homes and going about their daily business there, many birds and animals use the roadsides just as we use the adjacent roads – to get places. “The ribbons of remnant vegetation are so important as corridors, that’s

what we’ve found, and they can often link up natural bushland and waterways. So they’re very important in the overall landscape,” Chris says. To give the community an opportunity to see some of the amazing lifeforms inhabiting our roadsides, UGLN runs activities like wildflower walks and guided spotlighting tours. “The night walks are great because it’s easy for people to explore these roadsides during the day if they’re interested, but at nighttime, it’s a different world,” Chris says. RRR has also directly engaged many community groups in works done on the roadsides, with Scouts, schools, Conservation Volunteers Australia, and the Green Army all lending helping hands. “The first activity we had for Round Three was with some Yea high school kids putting up nest boxes on Racecourse Road in Yea, and we had them cutting out some woody weeds too,” Chris says. So the next time you’re staring out the car window as you drive around our little pocket of North East Victoria, perhaps take a closer look at the strip of bush flanking the road. “I’d like people to see the roadsides like they would see the native bushland or a park, as something to be valued, and as an important area for our wildlife. And I’d like for people to enjoy them as well, to enjoy the wildlife that lives out the front of their property or in their neighbourhoods on these roadsides,” Chris says. For more information on the Ribbons of Remnant Roadside Project or upcoming activities and events associated with the project, go to ugln.net or email Chris at ugln.projects@ugln.net

vertical pallet garden is a terrific winter project to do in the shed while the weather isn’t conducive to outdoor gardening activities. You can go about building your pallet garden in many different ways – it’s a wonderful opportunity to get creative with upcycling and use other bits and pieces of junk floating around your backyard. Here are some basic steps to get you on your way and ideas

to help you build your own unique vertical pallet garden creation. 1. Get a pallet There are many businesses around our area with pallets they’d like to get rid of, so it’s not hard to get your hands on one for free. When selecting a pallet, look for the HT stamp, which indicates the wood has been heat treated rather than treated with nasty chemicals (this is especially important if you want to grow food in your pallet garden). Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018 – 47

2. Plan your pallet modification

4. Put the growing medium in

Pallets come in different sizes, with different spacing between planks of wood. So sit with your pallet for a while and decide what you think will work best for the garden you want. You’ll also need to consider how you wish to present your pallet garden – you can hang it, lean it against a wall, or add legs to brace the back for a freestanding pallet garden.

Once you’ve sealed up the back, sides, and base, you’re ready to get the growing medium in. Depending on what you plan to grow, anything from a bit of backyard soil to premium potting mix might be appropriate.

You don’t need to stop at merely making your pallet garden functional; you can go wild decorating it and create a dazzling piece of garden art. We had a small pallet with narrow spaces between the planks and decided that we’d leave the plank spacing as it was and use half the pallet for the garden and the other half for wood to complete the garden. For the sake of ease, we opted to lean it against a wall. 3. Make sure it can hold a growing medium Cover the back, sides, and base of your pallet garden with any material that will hold soil – just remember there will be a bit of weight to it once positioned vertically and you want the base to drain. We used the wood taken from the second half of our pallet and then used some pieces of old shade cloth inside to cover any gaps in the wood without blocking drainage.

An easy way to get the growing medium in is to have the pallet propped up on roughly a 30-degree angle so you can pour the growing medium in the top without it spilling out the front. 5. Plant, plant, plant! This is the fun part. Anything that is happy in a shallow container should be fine, which gives you lots of options. A Google Image search for ‘container garden plants’ and ‘vertical garden’ will provide plenty of inspiration! You can use mature plants, seedlings, or start with seeds. Whatever you plant, your garden will need to stay horizontal (or horizontal-ish) for a while to let the roots latch on enough to hold the plant in place when the garden is vertical – the more mature the plant, the less time it should need to stay horizontal. We planted lettuce seeds and left them on the 30-degree angle for about a month. Then, when the garden was in its final position, we planted herb and lavender seedlings in the top.

Juliet Corkhill at her printmaking machine with a monotype of a bush scene.

By Carol Hopkins

N

estled beneath towering gums with the Stevenson River nearby and birdsong filling the air, Juliet Corkhill’s Buxton studio is in the

perfect location for an artist whose work is inspired by the natural world. This passion for nature is evident on her studio walls with a collection of artworks

depicting plants, trees, fruit and landscapes. “As much as possible, my work reflects my love of the natural environment,” Juliet says.

“I take my inspiration from the landscape, particularly in the local area and the Australian outback.” Juliet has made several journeys to outback Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018 – 51

‘Cathedral Mountain’ from Acheron – an oil stick painting. Australia, visiting the Kimberley, Flinders Ranges, Kakadu and Central Australia, sometimes on organised bus trips. The bus trips presented a few artistic challenges. As Juliet explains, “I had to become very adept at drawing from bus windows and during coffee and lunch breaks!” On a recent excursion to Central Australia, Juliet took a flight over Lake Eyre. It was at a time when the normally dry salt lake was inundated with water. “We flew over the Channel Country of Lake Eyre. It was devastatingly beautiful. There was every colour and pattern imaginable. Everywhere you looked, it was different. I was taking photos non-stop in every direction.” 52 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018

These images became the basis for a series of artworks that formed part of a highly successful solo exhibition at Little Fishes Gallery in Marysville. Closer to home, Juliet has recently been commissioned to paint scenes of the Cathedral Ranges, which tower over her hometown of Buxton. The iconic, angular shape of Mt Cathedral, coupled with the kaleidoscope of colours created by changing light, have given Juliet plenty of scope to produce striking landscape paintings. Although Juliet’s main focus is on printmaking, she frequently uses other mediums in her artworks such as oil paint sticks, watercolours, fine point pen and charcoal. The paintings

of the Cathedral Ranges, for instance, were all done with oil paint sticks. “Oil stick painting makes a nice change from printmaking. It involves drawing, which I love, and gives me the freedom to express myself. And the bright colours of oil paint sticks mean I can bring a real vibrancy to the landscape.” Juliet began her artistic journey with a Diploma of Ceramics at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology inspired by her great aunt who was a talented potter. After working in ceramics for some years, she eventually turned to other forms of art. In 1973, Juliet moved to Taggerty and started attending a weekly life drawing group. “Drawing has

always been the core of my art practice and being able to explore and capture the human form is particularly rewarding,” she says. Not long after moving to Taggerty, Juliet became interested in watercolour and took part in workshops run by Louise Foletta, an accomplished watercolour artist living in the area. At the age of 40, with two children at home and a parttime job, Juliet commenced a Diploma of Visual Arts at Box Hill Institute of TAFE majoring in printmaking. It took her six years, part-time, to complete the course. “I discovered my love of drawing connected really well to printmaking. It was a natural fit. I felt as though I had found my place.”

Left: ‘The Boabs’ in the Kimberleys – a lino cut. Below: ‘Lake Eyre, Channel Country’ – an oil stick painting.

Juliet now has a purposebuilt printmaking studio where she works in all forms of the art including collagraphs, woodcuts, linocuts, monotype prints and etchings. On the day she was interviewed for this story, Juliet was working on a monotype print of a rural scene applying watercolour ink and crayon to a smooth plate and then pressing the painted image onto damp paper with the roller of the printmaking machine. However, as Juliet notes, being an artist is an everchanging journey adapting

to new discoveries, circumstances and restrictions.

painter and printmaker, he also made the most beautiful drawings,” she says.

“There are always obstacles that make you try another way of doing things. At the moment I am having a bit of trouble with arthritis, and so I can’t cut linoleum or wood for very long. Hence, I am having a go at monotype which doesn’t require cutting into a substance.”

Brett Whiteley is another significant influence. “His drawing skills were amazing. Much of his work revolved around life drawing which I was obsessed with for a long time.”

Juliet has had many influences on her art. “One of the artists that has really influenced me is Lloyd Rees. As well as being a wonderful

In printmaking, Juliet names Margaret Preston and her prints of Australian native flora as well as Rick Amor and Bea Maddock for their atmospheric etchings. But her all-time favourite artist is John Wolseley, an

English artist who came to Australia in the 1970s and trekked through the Australian outback recording the landscape, people and birds in a series of beautiful watercolours, charcoal drawings and prints. All these influences, as well as her own training and talent, have enabled Juliet to become an incredibly versatile artist recording the natural world through a wide variety of mediums. If you would like to contact Juliet Corkhill about her art, you can phone her on 0408 520 037 or send an email to julietcorkhill@gmail.com.

al Wilson has been a member of Alexandra Quilters for a very long time. Long enough to remember some of the now senior members of the group bringing their babies to the meetings. The Alexandra Quilters gather on the first Saturday of the month – rain, hail or shine! One of the things Val likes about Quilters is that it brings together people who all share a love of sewing, chatting and enjoying each other’s company. Val believes it is good to interact with other people with the same interests to avoid becoming isolated. To further her sewing skills, Val also attends Jennifer Rooney’s patchwork classes on Thursdays where she learns new techniques. lived in Preston, Wood End, Coburg then North Sunshine. Each of those places has changed immensely since she lived there. Val was a dressmaker by trade and after she was married, she continued to sew at home making dresses and doing alterations. At one stage, Val worked as

the “foreman” (or should that be “forewoman”?) at a canvas manufacturing business in Alexandra. She also ran Decorative Painting classes at CEACA for 15 years and enjoyed teaching and witnessing the creativity of her students. It was at CEACA that she attended a course in applique run by Pam

Val says one of the best sewing workshops she attended was run by Michelle Hill, a wonderfully talented quilter from Adelaide. Michelle specialises in William Morris designs, and one of Val’s favourite quilts is one she made to Michelle’s specifications. Val has converted one of the bedrooms in her home into a very organised space filled to the brim with a myriad of different useful bits and pieces that only a quilter would appreciate. She uses a Pfaff Expression 4 sewing machine and highly recommends them!

Over the years, Val has made many quilts that she has gifted to family and friends. At the moment, she is making a beautiful quilt for her granddaughter using stunning orange and yellow material. At night she sits watching TV and sewing as she always likes to be busy. Alexandra Quilters have been fortunate to have Val, a most valued member of the group. You can see some of Val’s beautiful quilts at the Alexandra Quilter’s Annual Exhibition in Alexandra Town Hall as part of the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show on the Queen’s birthday weekend, June 9 and 10 from 10am to 4pm.

arren Gilbert has a profound love of Australia’s environment and strives to live in harmony with it. No sharp lines define the border between his existence and that of the surrounding landscape of his Highlands home and studio. Inside the studio, there are remarkably detailed drawings of native birds in various stages of completion, from the small preliminary sketches through to large black-and-white ink works. But, as Darren explains, the theme of Australia’s flora, fauna, and terrain are central to both the rustic metal artworks and the ultra-precise, monochrome depictions of wildlife. Through his and his family’s off-the-grid lifestyle, and their constant work towards self-sufficiency, Darren finds another connection with our environment. The next venture is opening the studio and workshop doors. This promises to

60 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2018

provide an insight into the creative process, where a closer look at the process of his fine detailed pen and ink drawings and the method of construction of the sculptures can be experienced. The Open Studio weekends will be held on the first weekend of every month. Keep up-to-date with open studio days and times on the Website and Facebook. Little Fishes Art Studio, Falls Road Marysville Going, Going, Gone An exhibition in fibre art by Kate Taylor and Reena Lee Harwood from 23 June to 8 July. Reena Lee Harwood is a naturally talented artist who trained as a costume designer in theatre arts. Five years ago her sister introduced her to the sewing needle in a bid to use up some Merino fleeces. This sparked an obsession for Reena in needle felting. Her love of sharing means that teaching is in her blood and she maintains that we all have something to contribute. A love of Australian wildlife inspired her to create a range of

cute ‘Aussie Babies’ that all beginners can make in one lesson whilst gaining skills and insight into this highly addictive pastime. Reena has a very soft spot for first time pieces and encourages all newbies to embrace their unique styles and to let go of control to find their own personal magic. Classes will be available during the exhibition at Little Fishes Art Studio. Beginner needle felting classes run on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 1pm; Intermediate needle and wet felting classes on Tuesday 10am to 3.30pm. To book for a class please phone Kate on 0437 129 528.
