n an old potato shed on a flower farm in Kinglake, Yvette De Lacy is making functional ware ceramics with fine art flair. After doing various art subjects in her final year of high school, Yvette knew she wanted to continue her art studies, but wasn’t sure in which direction. Others suggested her ceramics portfolio was a standout, so she took it to the Victorian College of the Arts. Her visit to the ceramics department sealed the deal. “There were all these muddy people, and I thought it was awesome, and they said

you’re in, so I didn’t go to any more interviews,” she says. Yvette completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts, focusing on ceramic sculpture, in the early 90s. But, like many young artists, she bumped up against the reality that breaking into the world of professional art is not easy. “I waited tables, and I went overseas for a few years and did similar stuff, worked in pubs. I studied archaeology as well because I didn’t know what to do – it was so hard back then unless you had a gallery – so I didn’t really do ceramics for a long time.” Then, in her late twenties, Yvette did a Diploma of

Education at the University of Melbourne and became an art teacher. She got her hands back into the clay, picking up the odd ceramics class and dabbling in sculpture on the side every now and again. Later, a magazine article about Victorian potter Bridget Bodenham, (known for her tableware), sparked the idea that functional ware was worth a shot. As this thought quietly burned in the back of her mind over a few years, Yvette saw other Australian potters like Susan Simonini selling beautiful but useful ceramics for the home, and that gave her the push to start.

Mountain Clay was born, and from there, things happened quickly. “I opened an Etsy store in 2014, and I did one firing and one market up here at Kinglake, and then I was a finalist in the Etsy Design Awards within the first couple of months. It really took off.” Yvette’s approach to making useable pottery was an instant hit, which may be because her foray into functional ware is more of an extension of her sculptural work rather than an abrupt sidestep from it. “I think making sculpture really helped my aesthetic because I think about the

Many of Yvette’s designs are inspired by her mountain surrounds, and even as her work evolved from her early days of sculpting, the deep appreciation of nature remains a core theme. “Originally I made lots of sculptures of mountains or islands, so when I started making pots I made them like mountains, but with a little opening, so nothing’s really changed.” textures probably more so than I think about the functionality of the piece, and I do add elements of sculpture,” she says. “I try to make every little piece an artwork; I try not to make them too massproduced.” Much of Yvette’s design inspiration comes from her immediate surroundings in Kinglake and tell stories of mountains, forests and wildlife, as well as her relationship with them. “The trees in my pieces originally came from when we first moved to Kinglake. We had a fire in 2006 that came all the way up past our house – that was really frightening – and that shape started with the dead, burnt trees. Then we got hit by Black Saturday, and I didn’t want to draw the black trees anymore because we were surrounded by black trees, so I started drawing them with canopies, I guess that was my way of getting through it.”

At the heart of her work, there is also concern for the environment she adores.

blue-green mountain ranges while adding a touch of fine art to those everyday items.

“When I’m doing my pieces, I’m thinking about how we’ve got this beauty, and I don’t want it to go, and I want my daughter to see it.”

The popularity of Yvette’s rustic, eclectic tableware allowed her to become a fulltime ceramicist nearly a quarter of a century after she completed her fine arts degree. In 2018, she stopped teaching to focus on building Mountain Clay.

For more information on Mountain Clay, or to make an appointment to visit the studio, go to mountainclay. com or @mountainclay on Instagram or call Yvette on 0407 484 872.

While her ceramics still provide an outlet for artistic expression, Yvette has also found joy in knowing that people use her creations on a daily basis. “Local people I’ve made a

n April 12, Yea Pottery Studio (YPS) launched its brand new, automatic, three-phase kiln, which was purchased with grant money from Murrindindi Shire Council, Yea & District Community Bank, and funds raised by studio members.

Photo page 13: The new automatic, electric kiln at Yea Pottery Studio all loaded up and ready to fire with a few simple button presses. Above: From left to right: Marg Mahon (YPS Founder), Sue Chehab (President), and Katrina Spooner (Vice President) speaking at the kiln launch to an audience of community members and officials from Murrindindi Shire Council and Yea & District Community Bank.

The new electric kiln replaces a finicky gas kiln, which required the magic touch of 85-year-old Marg Mahon to fire properly. But YPS President Sue Chehab says that “anyone and everyone” can work the new kiln – it’s that simple to operate.

14 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019

Present at the kiln launch were Mayor Sandice McAulay, CEO Craig Lloyd and Councillor Rebecca Bowles from Murrindindi Shire Council, which contributed $3500 towards the kiln. Also present were CEO Sam Hicks and Branch Manager Lyn Southurst from Yea & District Community Bank, which chipped in $1461 to the $5000 total. Representatives from both organisations were suitably impressed when Katrina demonstrated how the new kiln works with nothing more than a handful of button presses.

Marg, who founded the Studio in 1975, feels that the new kiln will help encourage more creativity. “Before there were long waits between firings, but the new kiln means people feel they should do as much pottery as they can because it fires so quickly now,” Marg says.

firing services to the wider community”.

Yea Pottery Studio has doubled its memberships in the past year to 20 members, and Marg says a lot of this growth has happened since the arrival of the new kiln.

Katrina Spooner, YPS Vice President, said in her speech at the launch that the addition of the upgraded kiln would “allow YPS to continue to grow by offering

The Yea Pottery Studio Committee is confident the new kiln will attract more enthusiastic artists and potential potters to keep the studio going for another 40 plus years.

By Emily Friedel

T

wister, named for his wonky muzzle, came to Cindy’s Promise as a frightened and confused sixmonth-old foal. At the sale yards, people were saying he was just a horse with a bent nose, but Cindy Cattach knew exactly what his condition was and scooped him up immediately to save him from any number of potentially miserable fates. Twister has wry nose, a congenital deformity of the nose and upper jaw, and Cindy, who has been a vet nurse for 25 years, was aware that he would need a

little extra attention to live a comfortable life “Horses with wry nose are reasonably uncommon; most that are born are usually euthanased straight away. Twister’s a reasonably mild case, so he had no problems drinking off his mum, he eats like a normal horse, he behaves like a normal horse, he doesn’t know he’s any different. He has to have his teeth done more often to make sure that he can still eat effectively. But also because his face is twisted to one side, his airway is partially compromised. This means that he is more susceptible to things like

heat stress if overly exerted. So if he ran around silly on a very hot day or someone tried to ride him excessively or he got a nasty cold then he could potentially struggle a little,” Cindy says. Now, all grown up, Twister is an affable, gentle horse who has become a bit of a mascot for Cindy’s Promise – Rescue & Rehab Inc. “He’s just like our puppy dog, he’s just beautiful, and everyone adores him – our supporters absolutely love him.” Twister is one of the many horses who have realised their full potential through

rehabilitation at Cindy’s Promise, which began when Cindy bought a standardbred that had been rescued before he met his demise at the knackery. “I’ve had horses since I was a little kid, and it was probably about six years ago I got my first standardbred horse. So then I started looking into standardbreds, reading about how incredible these horses are – you can do anything with them – and then I read about all the wastage from the harness racing industry, and it just made me want to do more. That’s where it all started,” Cindy says. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019 – 17

In 2015, Cindy made her horse rescuing operation official and registered Cindy’s Promise as a notfor-profit organisation. She still takes in many horses from the standardbred and thoroughbred racing industries, along with horses from a variety of sources including RSPCA referrals, private surrenders and council impounds. And she’s not afraid to tackle cases that no one else can manage. “Most of them are pretty emaciated. I’ll take cases that no one else will take, so they can take up to twelve months of rehab, and it’s around-the-clock: feeding tiny amounts every hour and monitoring gut sounds, monitoring everything. A lot of the ones we’ve saved were skeletons when we got them, and we literally don’t know how they survived,” she says. At one point, the demands of

18 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019

caring for the horses became so great that Cindy had to choose between her rescue organisation and her job. She chose the horses. “I quit my dream zoo nursing job a couple of years ago to do this fulltime, and just recently I’ve gone back to work a couple of days a week at Mountain Ranges Vet Clinic in Kinglake because I’ve got amazing volunteers now.” As well as committed volunteers, Cindy’s Promise has a support network of experts who can address all aspects of rehabilitation: equine vet Chris Heislers, vets from Yarrambat Vet Clinic, horse trainers, specialist farriers, and foster carers. “We don’t do anything by halves; we want the best for all of them.” While a handful of horses

with higher care needs like Twister are permanent residents, Cindy and her team aim to get their horses healthy – both mentally and physically – and adopted out to loving homes. Horses from Cindy’s Promise are adopted out on contracts that ensure they never end up back in the types of situations they were rescued from in the first place. Adopters are required to provide regular updates on the horses they’ve taken in, and it seems they’re more than happy to do so. “They’re supposed to send me photos every three months, and I go and visit the horses as well, but pretty much all of them saturate me with photos. I love it. Every day I get up and get on my phone and see photos of my beautiful horses. There are kids out competing on ponies and horses that

would now be dead if they hadn’t been rescued.” These success stories make all the hard work worth it, Cindy says, and she wants to encourage more people to find out just how rewarding adopting a horse can be, but to be mindful of how to go about it. “Adopt don’t shop - it’s so important. There’s a big fad now of wanting to rescue horses, so dealers are saying they’ve got these horses that are going on the truck to be slaughtered next week. People go into a panic – good-hearted people that want to help – and they’re buying these horses and getting them home and going my god it’s crazy, and then they’re trying to surrender to us. So it’s this vicious circle. I work with some incredible rescues around Victoria and interstate, and everyone is

Restoring the health of the horses that come to Cindy’s Promise is a costly business. Cindy says their operation relies heavily on the generosity of the public and there are many ways to support the animals they rescue: make a tax deductible donation, share their Facebook posts, purchase Cindy’s Promise merchandise, apply to volunteer, sponsor a horse, donate feed and hay, or donate services or items for their auctions or raffles. full, and it’s partly because people aren’t adopting any more,” she says. “We have these amazing, healthy, vet-checked, riderassessed, beautiful horses that we’ll always take back for a couple of hundred bucks as a donation, and it’s crazy that people are going and spending $1200 on a horse they’ve never met and potentially a human’s never touched. OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK FROM 7AM TILL LATE

Not much is known about the health of Murrindindi Shire’s platypus populations, but a new communityassisted monitoring project run by the Australian Platypus Conservancy promises to shed light on how this local platypus and its mates are fairing.

Above: Platypus face many perils including habitat degradation and direct human impact, which has led to their classification of near threatened with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The platypus pictured, which was seen near Hazeldene caught in fishing wire, represents an all-too-common problem according to Australian Platypus Conservancy biologist Geoff Williams. T

he platypus is a puzzling and intriguing creature with its duck bill, webbed feet, and beaver-like tail

– a combination that the first scientists to examine it thought could only be a hoax. On top of that, with females being furcovered egg-layers and

males packing a venomous weapon in their hind legs, it’s an animal that is sure to spark curiosity. Despite so readily capturing the human imagination,

Australian Platypus Conservancy (APC) biologist Geoff Williams says the status of the species is poorly understood. “The platypus is now classed as near threatened by the IUCN [International Union for Conservation of Nature], which reflects the fact that platypus numbers have declined in many locations, and we really don’t have a good handle on how the species is doing across its range.” At the moment, Geoff says there is very little data on platypus populations in the Murrindindi Shire area. However, a new communityassisted monitoring project that was recently rolled out across the Goulburn Broken Catchment – with funding and support from the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority – marks the beginning of a

22 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019

better understanding of platypus numbers both in our area and, as the project rolls out across different catchments, Australia wide. Getting to grips with how platypus populations are faring is not an easy task. Surveying methods such as live trapping are only accurate in shallower waterways, and newly developed environmental DNA technology, which detects traces of platypus DNA in water samples, is still in its infancy and has limited applications. However, Geoff says there is a surprisingly simple and reliable method of gauging platypus numbers: visual monitoring.

“I guess when we first started research 25 years ago, it was generally considered that it was impossible to monitor platypus by visual methods. It used to be thought that platypus were basically nocturnal and that they were shy and sensitive and difficult to see and all those sorts of things.

The beauty of visual monitoring is that just about anyone can do it. The APC is taking full advantage of this fact with the Australian Platypus Monitoring Network (APMN) and calling for as many volunteers as possible to keep an eye out for platypus in their local waterways.

“What our research started to show, in fact, was that neither of those things were true. They’re not particularly nocturnal; they are predominantly active at night, but they are out in the day enough to detect their whereabouts, and, contrary to popular opinion, they’re relatively a straightforward species to look for.”

“What we’re looking for from people is not a timeconsuming process. We know from the work we’ve done over the last ten years that there are plenty of people who find it within their easy capacity to spend a bit of time scanning for platypus – typically they’re people who go for a walk along the river each day, or

Platypus rely on healthy habitats to thrive, so monitoring platypus numbers is also a good way to monitor the waterways in which they live. Photo credit Barry Baker.

they might be riding their bike along a river to work, or people who have river frontage in their property and perhaps go down to check their pump once a day or things like that. They really only need to spend five or ten minutes monitoring the area and then recording what they see, so it’s not a time-consuming system, and we don’t expect people to do it every day of the week, although of course the more they do it, the better,” Geoff says. “Ideally, we get groups of people working in an area – that gives us a lot more data to play with, and we know then if somebody goes off on holiday for a week it’s not

One of the local platypus residents volunteer Ken Mival is getting acquainted with in the course of his regular scans of four patches of King Parrot Creek. Photo courtesy Ken Mival. disastrous because other people are covering them.” The APMN is backed by an app and website that allow people to record data from their monitoring sessions as well as track platypus populations in any area. APMN volunteer Ken Mival is monitoring four sites along King Parrot Creek near Hazeldene, and has found that implementing the APC’s system is fast revealing more about our local platypus residents. “Whilst I had seen and photographed platypus in the creek previously, I very soon became acquainted with the presence of at least three different platypus along the creek. I found that by following their [the APC’s] methods, I immediately saw the platypus more often 24 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019

and sometimes for several minutes as they searched for food in the creek,” Ken says. Aside from directly gathering information about what platypus are up to, the monitoring project may also provide insights into how our waterways are doing in general. Platypus is a good indicator species for the health of the freshwater aquatic environments they inhabit because they are the top predators in those ecosystems so rely on the rest of the system being in good shape to thrive. “Platypus feed on a whole range of bugs, particularly because they have a very high-energy lifestyle where they have to take in a lot of food. A typical platypus has to find about 20% of its

body mass every day in food and females, at the height of their lactation period, have to find something like 80% of their body mass per 24 hours in food. They can only do well when the system is doing well. In other words, the better quality habitat, the more platypus you’ve got; the more your habitat declines, the less platypus you’ve got,” Geoff says.

of the deep-seated problems that were there twenty odd years ago. But having said that, we really need to make certain that we know what is the status of platypus in case there are any specific problems we detect through monitoring or particular areas where we identify that more work is needed to improve their habitat,” Geoff says.

So while much has been done to rehabilitate waterways in the Goulburn Broken Catchment, the APMN may pinpoint areas that require more attention.

With data from the Murrindindi Shire among the first to be entered into the system, the APC’s community-assisted monitoring project promises to reveal more about our how our local platypus populations are doing and the health of their homes.

“We’re at a good point where much work has been done to reinvigorate our waterways, the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority has done a lot of work to try and solve some

Camera trapping surveys throughout Victoria are failing to pick up pictures of spotted-tailed quolls, which doesn’t bode well for the species in our state. Right and page 28: Quoll scats found in Kinglake National Park by Australian Quoll Conservancy President Alberto Vale provide evidence of the species being present, and may hint at more than just a lone wandering male. By Emily Friedel

S

cats found in Kinglake National Park last spring provide the first hard evidence of spotted-tailed quolls in the area in 30 years.

Victoria Parks Ranger Tony Fitzgerald, who has worked in Kinglake National Park for over 20 years, says he has received many anecdotal reports of quolls in that time but nothing verifiable. “We’ve had lots of community members saying they’ve seen or heard them, but our last legitimate quoll sighting - and by that I mean recorded as a reliable scientific sighting – was in the 80s,” Tony says. Four fresh scats were found by Australian Quoll Conservancy (AQC) President Alberto Vale while he and local volunteer Chris Cobern were setting up camera traps for an ongoing quoll survey in Kinglake National Park. The samples were sent to scatologist Barbara Triggs for expert analysis, and quoll grooming hairs (hairs ingested when the animal is grooming itself ) were found in two, confirming they were quoll scats.

This proof of the presence of quolls in Kinglake is cause for excitement for all involved in the quoll survey including Parks Victoria, AQC, and the Upper Goulburn Landcare Network, especially given that Victoria’s populations of the species appears to be in dire straits.

“Doing a bit of a review of camera trapping across Victoria, there are a lot of camera traps that are being used by agency staff all the way down to individual farmers and deer hunters, but there just aren’t any photos of spotted-tailed quolls coming back.”

According to quoll specialist Andrew Murray from the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning, the noticeable lack of quolls appearing in camera trapping surveys throughout Victoria paints a bleak picture.

“So the only place we’ve really got them in Victoria is in the Upper Snowy catchment, which is really an extension of the Byadbo Wilderness population in Kosciuszko [New South Wales].”

“The arrival of camera trapping has been a real game-changer for spottedtailed quoll surveys. We know when they are around, they are so easy to camera trap because they readily come in to investigate lures,” Andrew says. 28 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019

However, the timing of the discovery of the quoll scats in Kinglake provides a glimmer of hope. Male spotted-tailed quolls can travel very long distances in search of females, so finding lone males (or their droppings) in an area does not necessarily

mean there is a breeding population nearby. During the breeding season from April to July, male quolls are on the move, and Andrew says signs of quolls found at this time in Victoria usually point to a wandering male rather than a colony. But the scats found in late September last year could indicate something else. “It’s certainly an interesting time for those scats to have been found. That’s when the establishment of latrines is happening.” Quolls use their scats for communication – “A calling card advertisement to others of the same species on what this individual is up to,” Alberto says. And latrines are communal areas where they can deposit scats and scent marks to ‘talk’ to one another. So while the scats found in

Kinglake may still be that of a solitary male, being found fresh outside the breeding season could mean there is a breeding population in the area. “There could be a population just hanging on,” Andrew says. At this stage, more information is needed to determine whether or not there is a breeding population in Kinglake and the AQC and Parks Victoria are asking the public to help by being on the lookout. Andrew says it’s possible to see quolls at any time of day because there are populations that are known to hunt during the day and they quite like to bask in the sun, or they may be seen as roadkill. One of the best ways to know if there are quolls

The Australian Quoll Conservancy and Parks Victoria are appealing to the public for help with their quoll survey and ask that people report any signs of quolls in our area. Photo courtesy WildCAM Australia ® around is finding what they leave behind. “Looking for the scats is probably the way to go. They like somewhere where they’ve got a bit of a view and something that’s a bit elevated, like large, flat rocks or large fallen trees,” Andrew says.

Alberto says they may also be found scattered along the middle of dirt roads. Quoll scats can look a lot like fox scats, but there are a few clues that tend to suggest quoll rather than fox. For starters, quoll scat is described as a ‘twisted cylinder’, so a twist in the poo is a good sign. And the

content can help too. “Basically quoll scats are full of hair and bone – they’re carnivores. Fox scats have some too, but foxes also eat a lot of other stuff, blackberries and seeds and little insects, so sometimes when you see a scat you can tell it’s probably not from a quoll because it hasn’t got

enough fur and bone in it,” Tony says. So if you’re around potential quoll country in Kinglake, keep your eyes peeled, and if you see any signs of spottedtailed quolls, please report them to either the AQC at quolls.org.au or Parks Victoria at info@parks.vic.gov.au

f safe cycling in a beautiful environment , while getting fit and having fun, appeals then the Murrindindi Cycle Club may have some great events on offer. Their last organised off-road experience saw 75 riders from Melbourne and beyond challenge themselves across 50 kilometres of tracks in the Rubicon forest. The brainchild of the Murrindindi Cycle Club working in collaboration with a prominent Melbourne cycling scene figure, Andy White, this ride was a top event for participants. Fifty cyclists ate and camped in style at Camp Jungai on the weekend of March 13, and were joined by 25 others

the next morning for their day’s tough ride. Known as ‘the gravel group’, they have enjoyed rides up Lake Mountain and around Marysville, and now they have conquered the first Rubicon ride. The beautiful locations and challenge is great for attracting ‘cycling tourists’ to the Shire. All ages were represented on the Rubicon ride: families, couples, solos and even a few young kids with incredible stamina and determination – champions in the making. Andrew White promised the Rubicon ride would be 100% gravel, 50km long, with 1500m of climbing. And that it was. The route Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019 – 33

and the Murrindindi Cycle Club and the plan is that it will return bigger and better next riding season.

Enjoying morning tea in the forest. was planned with help from local Ken Deacon who knows the area intimately from his horse riding tours. The bonus was Ken telling the cyclists about the history of the forest and describing its special features, from geology to biodiversity, hydrology and indigenous culture. “I congratulate you on being here. You are part of the future of this place, of using the forest for fitness and personal enjoyment. It is great to welcome you here”, Ken says. 34 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019

Testament to the quality of the event was the presence of Australian ultra-distance superstars Sarah Hammond and Jesse Carlsson. Jesse won the 2015 Trans America Bike Race, covering 6,800kms in under 19 days. Sarah came 6th in the 2016 Trans Am and has won Race to the Rock, a 3000km unsupported journey from Adelaide to Uluru, for the last 3 years – a race so hard no man has ever won! The Gravel Camp event was enabled by joint sponsorship from Murrindindi Shire, The Outdoor Education Group,

Encouraging safe and enjoyable cycling for all is one of the goals of the Murrindindi Cycle Club. Given that long-term studies indicate children who shift to areas with more green space improve their cognitive functioning compared to those who move to less green space, and that the presence of nearby nature bolsters children’s resilience against stress and adversity, then cycling in our local forests will add to the green space our Shire provides for both visitors and locals of all ages, for their health and wellbeing. The Murrindindi Cycle Club was formed in 2009 after Cycle Sport Victoria contacted a local resident to gauge interest. It quickly became apparent that 35 prospective members would take part. A committee was formed to establish the club as an incorporated body. It even had its own uniform in a short space of time and the club is affiliated with the MTBA (Mountain Bike Australia).

This affiliation gives the club access to better insurance rates, race permits and trail advocacy and has now grown to more than 70 members. But, they don’t just get on their bikes. The club is a consultant to the Department of Water, Environment, Land and Planning (DWELP) for their trail designs. It has also bought chainsaws, mowers and whipper snippers and working bees are organised regularly to maintain the riding trails. Social rides are held during the week and weekends and these are posted on the club’s Facebook page or emailed to members. Club members also mentor young riders from the Alexandra Secondary College, with maintenance clinics that teach them how to maintain their own bikes. The club has donated repair stands and tools. Currently, the club is focusing on mountain bike trails north of Eildon with a view to securing use of these trails. https:// murrindindicycle.club

‘The Bullet’ to visit this year’s Alexandra Truck Ute and Rod Show.

F

or most visitors to the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show the day is an opportunity to check out some pretty special gear. For the several hundred people who bring their vehicles for display what we see on the Sunday is the result of countless hours of work. Whilst most of the rods are ‘weekend drives’, to be taken out and enjoyed on a sunny day, spare a thought for the drivers and owners who have brought their trucks. With the exception of new vehicles displayed by the major manufacturers, vintage trucks and a few show trucks, these are working rigs. They would have delivered their last load for the week on Friday or

Saturday, and by Monday evening or Tuesday morning they will be back on the road. That immaculate three or four year old Kenworth might have close to a million kilometres on the clock. The fact is that these operators are passionate about their trucks. Maintaining their appearance to such a high standard involves constant work and attention to detail and thousands of dollars. For many the truck is their home for a week or more at a time, and these drivers are house proud! If they operate a truck on dirt roads logging or a tipper out of quarries the job is even harder. And when you’ve seen as much gleaming paint

and polished chrome and aluminium and stainless steel as you can handle wander over to Rotary Park to watch the chaisaws racing and the Victorian Woodchop Tournament. The Bullet This year’s show is proud to host the world’s fastest, conventionally powered truck ‘The Bullet’. The Bullet became a Guinness Book of World Records holder in Queensland in 2005, for a one kilometer run from a standing start, taking only 19.76 seconds to reach the finish line. The truck was able to reach calculated speeds of over 305 kilometers an hour, easily

eclipsing the existing record holder by nearly double the speed. The eight tonne truck was born as a tyre test vehicle, built with precision performance in racing, burnouts and spinouts. Hundreds of trucks have visited Alexandra’s Truck Rod & Ute Show, but this racing truck is like no other. The Kenworth T400 boasts two V8 engines with a total 2800 horsepower, linked by two superchargers and four turbo chargers. Travelling all the way from far North Queensland to exhibit at the show, you won’t want to miss the chance to see ‘The Bullet’ in Grant Street, Alexandra on Sunday 9 June.

humans spread around the globe.

here are a lot of plants that have been in recorded history since many thousand years BC. Some have stayed within their early boundaries and others have become part of most cuisines of the world.

It seems that they moved around the Americas through normal trading and migration. It is thought they were brought back to Europe, specifically Spain, on one of Columbus’ trips to the New World. Some believe they moved from Spain to Portugal and then back through India to wider Asia. It is also thought they may have moved from Central America to Eastern Asia and then into India and the subcontinent. Whatever route they took, our taste buds are certainly the beneficiaries.

T

The humble chilli or pepper is one of the latter. It was part of the Columbian Exchange, which brought all the foods from Latin America to Europe. The word chilli comes from the language of early Mexico, Nahuatl, where it has been cultivated for over 5,000 years. As to be expected with any plant this old there are many stories about how it spread around the world. This is not too surprising as we are still debating how

In the move to Europe they evolved into three categories: bell peppers, sweet chillies and hot chillies. The name pepper was given

to the hotter forms due to the similarity in heat with the popular spice, black pepper or Piper nigrum. This set up confusion that remains to now. Pepper is a completely different plant from chilli. Different family, different genus, different growing habit and conditions and different flavour chemicals. There are hundreds if not thousands of chilli cultivars around the world. They vary from shiny black to pure white and most colours in between. The only colour missing is a true blue. Most however go red when fully ripe. Also the heat does not relate to the fruit colour other than that immature fruit has less heat than ripe ones. Chillis are in the Solanaceae family – along with

tomatoes, potatoes, pepino and many ornamental bushes and creepers. They are in the genus Capsicum and there are five main species: Capsicum frutescens, Capsicum annum, Capsicum pubescens, Capsicum chinense and Capsicum baccatum. There are dozens more that are of little significance and many hybrids that are widely grown around the world. Some of these minor species are finding their way onto the Australian market. Eg C. microcarpum or Wild Peruvian Pepper. In Australia, capsicum is taken to refer to the larger fruits with no heat whilst ‘hot’ is what most Australians think of when the term ‘chilli’ is used. Granted many of them have a high heat content, but there are many Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019 – 43

Chillies come in all shapes, colours and heat. Right: the Carolina Reaper. that don’t. There is a whole industry and world of chilli people. In the early 20th century an official heat rating scale was developed called: ‘The Scoville Scale’. This is a rating scale based on how much sugar syrup is needed in taste tests to counteract the ‘heat’ of the chilli. It is primarily a measure of the compound capsaicin, which is the active ingredient in capsicum spray. Fruit, sauces, oils and other products are given a rating in Scoville Heat Units or SHU. The Scoville scale is subjective and has its critics but does give a fairly good comparative rating of chilli heat. It is no longer done by measuring sugar concentration but gas chromatography. The old

fashioned bell pepper or capsicum has a rating of zero. Pure capsaicin has a rating of 15 million and capsicum spray a rating of 5 million. The scale is not linear and there is a large jump from very hot to extremely hot. Jalapenos are 5-10,000, cayenne around 40,000 and habanero is about 500,000. I thought jalapenos were hot. (Jalapeno is a Mexican chilli commonly used in tacos, nachos and salsa. It is pronounced hal-a-peeno.) Renaissance Herbs has released several forms of ‘The world’s hottest chilli’ Bhut Jolokai in 2010 (the Guinness Book of World Records awarded this cultivar as the world’s hottest in 2006). Over the next five years they released ‘Trinidad

Scorpion Butch T’ and then ‘Carolina Reaper’. Since then there have been many other super hots like Yaki Blue, 7 Pod Yellow and Naga Viper. In 2018 a new chilli became the world’s hottest at 3.2 million SHU. It was bred and grown by Smokin Ed Currie (breeder of Carolina Reaper) and he is not releasing the plant. It is called Pepper X and there has been a batch of sauce from this plant available in the US. However you rate them, some chillis are very hot and some are not. A person’s ability to eat chilli is based on two things. The first is the history of what they grew up eating. I know people who have headed to Thailand unable to even look at a

chilli. After two months there they have to have chilli in most foods or find the taste too bland. The second is the number and sensitivity of capsaicin receptors in their mouth. There are thousands of chilli cultivars available although (like tomatoes) very few are available in supermarkets. The only way to get the range is to grow your own and these need to be sourced from reputable garden centres. Or the Herb and Chilli Festival held in Wandin in March each year – where 40 or so varieties are available. At long last Australia is starting to understand the versatility and range of chillis and how to use them.

Myotherapists Kate MacInerney (left) and Matthew Cleary with Natural therapist and clinic manager Leah Jade outside the new myotherapy clinic in Yea.

E

arlier this year, Matthew Cleary and Leah Jade opened the Yea clinic of their Advanced Myotherapy practice. Their award-winning practice, established in Carlton in 2008, offers services for pain management, athletic performance and injury recovery. For the past 20 years, Founding Director Matthew has dedicated his life to alleviating the pain of others through natural means with

even the most complex chronic conditions. Now with two young children, he and Leah are excited to open a clinic close to Matthew’s family in Murrindindi to help take care of the community they have grown to love. Matthew suffered his own chronic back injury as a young football player at 14 and learned early in life that the road to recovery can be a long one. Seeing a physiotherapist several times weekly for many months

was something that made Matthew want to be able to help people with a more hands-on approach to sports injuries and pain. “When it comes to pain conditions, surgery can often be prevented,” Matthew says. This is especially true, he says, when it is a ‘lifestyleinduced condition’, which are reversible with the correct self-care education. The Advanced Myotherapy team has helped thousands

recover from and manage their pain naturally, and many of their clients have avoided surgery that was recommended by other health professionals, even after a long road of trying different forms of physical therapies. As with Matthew, Leah experienced injuries at a young age that influenced her career path. At 18, Leah had two car accidents, suffering neck and thoracic trauma. She had tried yoga, Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019 – 47

others’ struggles. Matthew’s mother worked in pharmacy for 43 years while Leah’s mother had chronic pain and illness for many years, passing away at 51. As a result, both Matthew and Leah understand the toll of addiction that drugs, particularly pain killers, can take.

In addition to their personal experiences with pain and injury management, Matthew and Leah developed their philosophy of care through witnessing

With the couple having seen so many people with debilitating pain conditions, Advanced Myotherapy has a strong purpose of empowering people

Matthew and Leah have also written several books between them: The Sacred Psychology of Healing, Self Care Medicine, Heal Yourself, and Moving Beyond Pain. These books, the latter two of which were co-authored by Matthew and Leah, have received praise around the world. Dr John Demartini, best-selling author of Count Your Blessings – The Healing Power of Gratitude and Love said of Leah’s first book, The Sacred Psychology of Healing: “Sacred wisdom directly from an inspired heart that could help heal your life.” Along with their growing team, the books have served to help them spread the message that healing is far more possible than many realise. Now the couple hopes the addition of the Yea clinic will further their ability to help people to overcome pain and injury naturally.

All welcome at Rustic Simplicity @ The Shear ‘N’ shedS, 74 Grant Street, Alexandra for drinks and nibbles from 6pm Friday 7 June to celebrate the changing of the seasons. By Carol Hopkins

P

eople can’t help but smile when they walk into Mim Kocher’s Healesville studio and see her colourful, quirky sculptures particularly as they often highlight the dilemmas and absurdities of modern life. Mim is a sculptor who specialises in creating works with a social message whether it is about the housing crisis, the demise of newspapers, immigration or the state of the planet. However, although the essential messages are serious, Mim prefers to treat them in a light-hearted manner. “A lot of my sculptures have a social message but I don’t want to be strident about it. I like to use a bit of humour if I can,” Mim says. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2019 – 51

Her recently sold sculpture “In Loving Memory Of Newspapers” features a homeless man asleep on a park bench covering himself with his iPad rather than the traditional newspapers. Another, titled “Will We Ever Get The Keys”, shows a young couple scaling the outer wall of a block of high-rise apartments and peering longingly in the windows. Then there is one of her newest sculptures, which depicts a man deep in thought, sitting on top of a globe of the world, with the title, “There Is No Planet B”. At other times though, Mim simply uses her sculptures to represent interesting places around Melbourne. After taking part in a “Rooftops of Melbourne” tour, Mim completed a series of sculptures depicting the cinemas, gardens, pools and restaurants that are tucked away on top of the city’s high-rise buildings. Regardless of the topic, Mim always injects a sense of fun and play into her works with plenty of quirky characters and situations. Recently, she has become fascinated with the vertical gardens that are growing on the walls of some of Melbourne’s major buildings and has produced a sculpture called “The Thinker” depicting a man sitting on top of a high-rise building festooned with plants. When asked what the man is thinking about Mim says, “He is thinking wouldn’t it be great if every building in the city had greenery covering its exterior.” Some of life’s truths are also featured in her work. Her “Life Is A Balancing Act” sculpture shows a man walking a tightrope strung between two pillars while another, “Ordinary People Can Be Heroes”, depicts a woman on top of a tall building along with various superheroes from comic books. At the moment Mim admits to being “a bit caught up with people using mobile phones all the time.”

She has just finished her “Viking Selfies” sculpture. Here, three vikings are shown standing in a boat with a sword in one hand and a mobile phone in the other. While this may seem rather absurd, Mim is making the point that many of our social behaviours are equally absurd. Last year, Mim won second place in the Tina Wentcher Prize at the Association of

Above: “There Is No Planet B.” Right: “The Thinker” sculpture. Sculptors of Victoria Annual & Awards Exhibition for her sculpture “Harajuku Selfies”, which depicts two Japanese girls, in outlandish clothing, standing back to back taking photos of themselves. This scene was actually filmed by her son on a visit to Japan. In bestowing the prize, the judge, Chris Deutscher from Deutscher and Hackett fine art auctions, commented that “this funky sculpture is vibrant in colour and rich in social comment (on) the world of contemporary Tokyo” and “displays the more humorous side of modern Asian society - the “selfie” wrapped in a crazy world of colourful patterns.” Mim’s ideas for her sculptures come from a variety of sources – her own

observations, stories in the newspapers or quotations from books. She writes them down in a book called “Ideas for Sculptures”. “I have to write my ideas down quickly, otherwise I forget,” Mim says. One of the unique features of Mim’s work is that she almost always places her sculptures on top of a base such an old flower vase, lamp stand, bottle, trophy support or wine glass. Mim likes the fact that she is giving new life to old things. The bases are prepared separately by decorating them in vibrant designs using porcelain and glass paints, and then they are baked in an oven. The sculptures themselves are fashioned out of a

modelling clay that feels like soft polystyrene foam and is clean, easy to use and dries in the air. The sculptures are then painted with acrylic paints and glued on top of the bases. Mim’s choice of a modelling clay for her works stems from her many years as an art teacher and then as a consultant for Zart Art running countless workshops for teachers all over Australia. “During that time I discovered this wonderful substance called Paper Magiclay and I’ve been using it in my sculptures ever since,” Mim explains. Over her extensive career in art teaching and consulting Mim has been involved in

almost all aspects of art but, since retiring, she has focussed on sculpting and has been kept busy entering numerous art shows and exhibitions. From 3 August to 29 September this year, Mim will have an exhibition of her work at MiRa, the Marysville Information and Regional Artspace. She will be joined in the exhibition by sculptor Savaad Felich and painter Rosemary Clark. If you have a chance, make a trip to MiRa and view Mim’s wonderful, vibrant, zany sculptures. You are guaranteed to come away with a smile. If you’d like to find out more about Mim’s work, go to her website at mimkocher.com, take a look at Instagram @ mimkocher or send an email to mk@artypacks.com.au. Blacksmith Tree. ‘Want to share?’ - Scarlet Robins (colour pencil and graphite) by Janet Matthews.

T

his winter, MiRa, Marysville’s Information Centre and Regional Artspace, is celebrating art inspired by nature. ‘Drawn to Nature’ is an exhibition of rare beauty, featuring award-winning artist, teacher and mentor Janet Matthews and fellow artists Katrina Gavaghan and Di Stockbridge.

nature makes Katrina’s work thoroughly engaging. Di shares her personal experience and attachment to the possums and wombats which she has had the privilege of caring for over the years. Her familiarity with the animals shines through her work. The three artists will be displaying their work at MiRA from 1 June to 30 July. There will also be a drawing demonstration on Saturday, July 6 from 1pm to 4pm.

A few of these leaves were forged from steel, which, if left outside, would eventually rust away. Instead of attaching them to the main tree, the blacksmiths chose to make a smaller tree with these leaves and leftover branches from the main tree, which could be displayed indoors. The little tree has remained a secret until recently.

Janet’s work has a humour and personality. “I love to make people stop and enjoy the beauty of my subjects and to smile at my story” Janet says.

MiRa will also be hosting a ceremony on 22 June where a ‘Miniature Blacksmith’s Tree’ will be presented as a gift from the Australian Blacksmith Association (Victoria) to the community of Marysville to commemorate Black Saturday.

It was five months after the 2009 bushfires that the blacksmiths went to Marysville to forge leaves for the main tree and meet the local people. The blacksmiths were devastated by the blackened township in the snow and touched by the graciousness of the people of Marysville. It was only recently when MiRa was established, and remembering their visit in 2009, the blacksmiths decided it was time to release the tree to its new home.

Katrina is drawn to the interesting aspects of life, like the small blue ants that crawl around in the undergrowth and the dance of the leaves falling from the autumn trees. The magic and wonder about those moments in

Forged with love by hundreds of blacksmiths from 20 countries, over 3500 metal leaves were created and in 2014, the 10m high tree was erected at the Peter Avola Memorial Pavilion in Strathewen, Victoria.

As part of the celebrations, the documentary ‘Forged From Fire – The Making of the Blacksmiths’ Tree’ filmed by Andrew Garton about this extraordinary art project will be shown at MiRa on Friday 21 June at 7.30pm.

Pencils and nature have drawn these artists together. Detailed drawings in colour pencil and graphite of birds, animals and beetles among the flora and natural environment that they live in are the main subjects of their artworks.

had the Blue Gums Caravan Park. As well as doing the books for the Park, Thelma had a little business sewing windcheaters with applique on them. Before Thelma started quilting she did a lot of embroidery, which involved travelling to Melbourne to the Embroiders Guild. She was involved in a craft group with Hilda Williamson and Gwen Stobbart, which is where she made one of her first quilts. Thelma joined Alexandra Quilters and was president fom 2011 to 2013 and vice president from 2013 to 2017. She was involved in applying for a grant to have proper quilt stands made. “They have firm bases and are much easier to carry and put up than the previous ones. They are compact and easy to store,” Thelma says Thelma has made each of her grandchildren quilts as well as many for friends. She has given most of them away! She has been going to Jennifer Rooney’s sewing classes at Taggerty for the past four years. “Jennifer is very helpful and is always willing to show her sewing students how to do things the correct way.” By Penny Jungalwalla

helma Lucas has sewn “all her life”.

Making ‘Aussie Heroes ‘ quilts has been very satisfying. These are quilts made for the Defence Force personnel to use.

When she left school at 14 she had the choice of being a hairdresser or a dressmaker. Her mother decided that she should be a dressmaker!

Another satisfying cause has been making quilts to raffle at the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea. Thelma organised the Eildon event for 25 years!

She worked as a dressmaker in Perth in a big store called Boans. They had a workshop where she did a lot of alterations to garments people had purchased. She then went to work with a dressmaker who did cutting and fitting. Thelma’s job was to finish off the garment by hand sewing.

Alexandra Quilters have been fortunate to have Thelma as a most valued member of the group.

Thelma moved to Eildon in 1987 where she and her husband

You will be able to see some of Thelma’s beautiful quilts at the Alexandra Quilter’s Annual Exhibition on Queen’s birthday weekend June 8 and 9 from 10am to 4pm at the Alexandra Shire Hall, as part of the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show.
