manda Furlong and Rob Mitchell hand craft a unique and rare blueberry liqueur, a labour of love and passion, called Sassy Sister Decadent Blueberry Brandy Liqueur. It’s produced at Bilyara Springs in the foothills of the pristine Strathbogie Ranges in north-east Victoria, where their organically grown blueberries and red currants thrive. The annual crop of berries is steeped for 12 months in a twenty- year-old brandy which has been blended with a younger vibrant brandy spirit in the style of a cognac (both of which have been aged in American and French oak barrels). This is then crushed and the essence is returned to the vat for another four to five years to allow the fruit and spirit to mature into a smooth, well rounded and delicious liqueur. Family and friends have enjoyed Sassy Sister Liqueur for many years and finally convinced Amanda and Rob to offer ‘her’ to the wider audience. In May 2019 the liqueur was released into the market and simultaneously entered into two prestigious competitions – the 2019 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards (ADSA) where ‘she’ won a silver medal and the Melbourne International Spirits Competition winning another silver medal being just one point short

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

of a gold (they were unaware of the necessity to inform the judges that the liqueur’s deep rich, red colour is natural and not synthetic). As small craft distillers they were thrilled to receive the awards and the accompanying accolades acknowledging that Sassy Sister Decadent Blueberry Brandy Liqueur is special and at 33.4% AV no shrinking violet! Sassy Sister has since been taken up by many bars and boutique spirit outlets (including several Foodworks and IGA outlets) across Victoria as well as garnering serious interest from overseas distributors. As a digestif or aperitif the liqueur is great on its own, but really shines in cocktails – visit the website for recipes sassysisterliqueur.com.au. “We have 6 children between 35 and 45 who name and judge all our cocktails and they are pretty ruthless when it comes to what they all like,” says Rob. Just look for Sassy Sister Liqueur on the web, buy at Grant Street Grocers in Alexandra and partake of a drop at Killingworth Hill Whiskey Bar & Cafe just outside of Yea – also available through the Dan Murphy website. Connecting the Kinglake Ranges since 1981 ~ www.mountainmonthly.com.au

By Jane O’Connor The value of independently run, community-oriented publications has never been more important. As an increasing number of such titles cease to publish due to the downturn in advertising revenue, those that have defied the odds have done so because of their audience reach and support for the businesses they provide an important platform for. Publishing since 1981, the Mountain Monthly, has created a Local Business COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

Directory that has become a valuable resource that ensures our businesses are connected when it comes to shopping local. When an advertiser books a display advertisement, they receive a directory listing. Over the years, this directory has become a go-to source for local suppliers, trades and service providers. At Mountain Monthly, we also enjoy a close relationship with other independent publications, such as the

020 marks 10 years since Georgina Covington groomed her first dog… and she loves it even more now than she did then.

“There is no limit to dog grooming,” she says. “You can’t ever say you’ve learnt it all. There are always new skills, new styles… something you could do better. So it never gets boring.” Georgina’s love for dogs is undeniable. Having left a zoo-keeping career at Healesville Sanctuary specifically to pursue a more canine existence, she has since returned to tertiary study a second, third and fourth time to ensure her dog-related qualifications are second to none. Establishing her business, In The Pink Dog Grooming, at home on her family’s Taggerty property, when she’s not grooming her clients’ dogs, she’s frequently grooming, training or cuddling her own. In short, dogs rule her life, coming second only to her spirited son, Daniel.

Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020 – 13

“It’s a running joke in this house,” she laughs, “my husband complains I only ever talk about dogs: that he’s always surrounded by dogs! So I remind him I married him because he said he loved dogs. And he says “I did, before I married you!”” But to Georgina, every dog is different… she loves researching the history of rare breeds, and is the proud new owner of one of the rarest: a beautiful young Azawakh, the elusive sighthound bred by the Tuareg nomads of the Sahara Desert. Kora’s slender, desert-adapted frame provides an interesting contrast against Georgina’s other dogs: Seamus the dark, heavily muscled Dobermann

and Sparkles, the irrepressible Bichon Frise ball of fluff who greets every client at the gate. “She’s my fluffy doorbell,” Georgina explains, “no-one sneaks up on us here!” Whilst Bichon hair is her favourite kind to groom, apparently every dog’s coat has its own unique set of pros and cons. Georgina will gladly explain this to you in great detail if you ask… so maybe don’t, unless you have an hour to spare. Or two.

problem,” she confesses. An Internationally Certified Master Groomer, Georgina was hoping to put both Sparkles and those scissors to special work this year, competing in a series of dog grooming competitions. Sadly, COVID-19 has put that plan on hold, but life in lock-down has been far from dreary, with well over 100 regular clients continuing to keep In The Pink busy.

But it does go some way to answering why she needs 16 different pairs of scissors. Yes, that’s 16.

“There are still plenty of dogs who need their hair done,” Georgina says. “This time of year, I’m usually booked 1-2 weeks in advance, but in Summer it can be up to a month in advance.”

“I may have a bit of an addiction

Still, it appears people don’t mind!

One of our lesser known natives, the rakali is a true-blue Aussie whose ancestors are thought to have swum or rafted here five to ten million years ago from New Guinea. Photo courtesy Carolyn Hall. By Emily Friedel

W

ith its swimming prowess and adaptations to aquatic life – glossy, quick-drying fur, streamlined body shape and partiallywebbed feet – Australia’s water rat (Hydomys chrysogaster) is probably better likened to a small otter than a rat. Also known by the Aboriginal name rakali, these native rodents occupy the position of top predator in aquatic environments across Australia as otters do on every other continent except Antarctica. Unfortunately, unlike otters, rakali are not a species that has secured itself a place of fondness in the public consciousness. To date, there has been very little research done on rakali and the status of the species is poorly understood – circumstances the Australian Platypus Conservancy (APC) is striving to change using citizen science. And for those in the Murrindindi Shire who want to support their quest, winter is a good time of year to get involved. Rakali are intelligent, inquisitive creatures that expertly hunt a variety of other underwater life, including fish 16 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020

and crustaceans, and readily adapt to a wide range of aquatic habitats (even more reasons the otter comparison is apt). Growing to around a kilogram, rakali have been known to take on prey much larger than themselves such as ducks and water coots, giving them a reputation as formidable predators. Rakali will also venture onto land to forage for food, happily getting stuck into carrion or pinching dog food from people’s backyards. “By the nature of its feeding pattern, it’s a species that’s got to be very adaptable, very quick-thinking to take advantage of whatever’s there,” APC biologist Geoff Williams says. Rakali are predominantly nocturnal, but during the colder months, their daytime activity increases. This cool-weather behaviour is probably due partly to rakali not being as good at regulating body temperature as other semiaquatic mammals like platypus. “It doesn’t cope with really cold temperatures as well, apparently, so one of the possibilities is that over the winter when temperatures are lower, it’s coming out in the day more to compensate for the cold. That’s one

reason you’re more likely to see it in winter. The other reason is probably related to the breeding season, which we think kicks off in late winter the same as platypus. With water rats, from about May onwards seems to be when people start seeing them being active much more,” Geoff says. The APC welcomes information on any rakali sightings, and Geoff says that if you want to start looking for them, they’re a pretty easy animal to identify. “A big water rat is the same size as a small platypus, which is why people get them mixed up. It’s like the platypus in that you can normally pick it when it’s active by the ripple patterns it creates. It has a similar sort of diving pattern to a platypus in that it will dive down underwater and look for its food and be underwater for 20-30 seconds then pop up again. But unlike the platypus, which tends to pop up and then stay in one place while it gets its breath and chews its food, the water rat will keep going. The white tip to the tail on the rakali normally becomes apparent when they dive, and you see the white tip sticking up.” Ron Litjens, who organises an annual COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

A rakali photographed in January this year while scoping out viewing sites for the annual Yea Wetlands platypus and rakali count event. Photo courtesy Ron Litjens.

platypus and rakali count at Yea Wetlands, says that while there’s only been one platypus spotted in the last four years of the hour-long waterwatching session, most participants will spy a rakali. “They’re quite elusive, they’re quite shy, and they’re very aware of what’s going on around them. So if people make the slightest noise, rakali will know about it. Nonetheless, they’re out there, and all you’ve got to do is sit and watch. I could almost guarantee that if you sat on the side of the Yea River at one or two locations on any night, you would see a rakali,” he says. Ron also suggests keeping an eye out for evidence of their habitual feeding spots to know if you’ve got rakali living nearby. “Rakali usually eat in the same place every time, so they develop a midden of shells and things, and that’s how you can tell if there are rakali around.” COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

In their position at the top of the food chain, rakali play a vital role in regulating species below them and maintaining balance within their ecosystems. Importantly, they target introduced pest species, providing a natural means of controlling these undesirables. “A good example is the role I think rakali play in keeping down some of the pest species of fish that have been introduced. They are good at catching and killing fish, and they show a preference for killing introduced fish as opposed to native fish. The introduced fish like carp, tench and roach are fairly slow-moving fish compared to many native species and therefore probably easier for the water rats to concentrate on, so they help keep the systems healthy,” Geoff says. Along with unwanted fish species, rakali are one of the only native predators that have figured out how to consume cane toads safely. Research published late last

year in Australian Mammology reported that within two years of the arrival of cane toads in rakali territory in the Kimberly in Western Australia, rakali had adapted to hunt and dissect them to avoid their poisonous skin and glands. “Hopefully, if cane toads came to Victoria, if they came in small number, rakali could play a role in stamping them out before they get established, given there’s probably nothing else that’s naturally going to stop cane toads,” Geoff says. As if all of this hasn’t made them endearing enough, rakali may also keep pesky introduced rodent species at bay – somewhat ironically since the ‘rat’ label and connotations arising from introduced species is probably part of the reason rakali never garnered much public attention. “There is some evidence that they’re aggressive towards the introduced rats. It’s very early evidence, and it’s not known if they actually kill the Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020 – 17

The status of the rakali in Australia is poorly understood, although anecdotal evidence suggests their numbers in south-eastern Australia have declined in many locations since the mid-1990s. The Australian Platypus Conservancy is using citizen science to help change this. Photo courtesy C. Boekel.

introduced rats, but it’s certainly a possibility. So having the native rats around is probably a good thing in terms of keeping the bad rats out,” Geoff says. Having rakali around to do their good works, though, is something the APC’s research suggests is being adversely affected by factors we don’t yet understand. Using the power of citizen science, the APC collects ongoing data from the public regarding rakali and ran two community-based surveys in Victoria and the ACT between 2017 and 2019. For a species that doesn’t attract much in the way of research funding, Geoff says citizen science is invaluable. “The number of proper studies on rakali is negligible, and without the information we get in from citizen science, we really wouldn’t know very much about the species itself.” Through the Yea Wetlands surveys,

18 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020

along with annual surveys run by Strath Creek Landcare Group on King Parrot Creek and observations from individuals like Ron, who has reported rakali in a dam on his bush block in Flowerdale, data is slowly accumulating about Murrindindi Shire’s local population. However, as with the status of the species across the country, the picture of our local rakali is far from clear, and the APC’s research has possibly created more questions than answers, highlighting how much more work needs to be done to fully comprehend what’s going on. Of particular concern is the fact that in their large communitybased surveys, rakali were found not to be thriving in places where, logically, they should. “For example, in the ACT, the species was very common in Lake Burley Griffin and Lake Ginninderra, two fairly large man-made lakes, but the species was almost totally absent from Lake Tuggeranong, which is an equivalent

sort of water body. So it raises those sorts of questions; there’s a lot going on that we really don’t understand yet,” Geoff says. The lack of knowledge and awareness of rakali seems unfair given that the otters they have so much in common with enjoy celebrity in the animal world as lovable critters whose cute images are worthy of social media ‘shares’. Here on one of the two otterless continents of the globe, perhaps it’s time to pay more attention to our otter equivalent and contribute to the APC’s efforts to unravel this mystery of this lesserknown Aussie native by keeping an eye out for them this winter. “It’s not a species we can take for granted until we get a better understanding of what’s going on, and we’re currently a long way from that,” Geoff says. For more information or to report a rakali sighting, go to platypus.asn.au or Strath Creek Landcare’s focusonfauna.com

hen the railway branch line to Alexandra township was opened on 28 October 1909, only minimal facilities were provided for passengers and freight. The passenger platform supported only two small structures: a Station Master’s office at the northern end of the platform and an equally tiny ladies’ waiting room at the southern end. Both of these structures, like the single goods shed, were moved from the former terminus of the line at Alexandra Road (later Koriella). The only water supply to any of these structures was a rain-water tank attached to one end of the Station Master’s office. The station building came a little later after the first train and was completed in 1911 and provided expanded passenger and freight facilities. It was

modelled on a standard Victorian Railways design used throughout the state and featured a Station Master’s office, ticket and parcel office, ladies waiting room, lamp room and small goods storage. The Alexandra Road Goods Shed was relocated to Alexandra and extended to accommodate the required storage. During 2019 and early 2020 a number of projects began at the Alexandra Railway Station to repair and update the building. There were eight repair tasks including replacing damaged timber, new fascias, new windows and mini orb cladding on the canopy. All this work had to be completed before the painting works could begin. The entire building including roof and platform canopy were pressure washed, painted with rust converter, and three coats of heritage colour paint were applied including posts, trims and rafters. The result is a stunning exhibit of period Victorian Railways architecture. Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum would like to thank local tradie Matt Dean and Max Franchin from I Paint Melbourne for their outstanding work commitment and attention to all the detailed work required. Also thank you to the Murrindindi Shire Council and VicTrack who organised the works as part of the ‘make good provisions’ prior to their relinquishing the lease to the Alexandra Timber Tramway. We look forward to visitors appreciating the new station, so keep a watch on the ATTM social media and website pages for opening times and upcoming events once COVID 19 trading restrictions are lifted.

Cora Lyn Falls 3. Cora Lyn Falls

Murrindindi Shire is a great place to enjoy an escape to tumbling waterfalls and lush ferny gullies. There are many waterfalls to see and walking tracks of varying lengths to enjoy on the way to each waterfall.

With two creeks joining at the top of the falls, Cora Lyn is a wonderful place to visit after heavy rain. While you’re visiting these falls you can walk the full 4km loop track and enjoy the many other sights along the way, including one of Australia’s tallest trees and the remains of the historic Cambarville township.

4. Cumberland Falls

Phantom Falls 1. Phantom Falls Not accessible until November (or later) due to the seasonal road closure of Lady Talbot Drive.

Keppel Falls Falls of the Yarra Ranges National Park Nestled in lush bush in the Yarra Ranges National Park near Marysville are three waterfalls, each with its own unique character. If you’ve never visited the waterfalls of the Yarra Ranges area you’ve been missing out! Several waterfalls located within a short drive of each other make a drive and walk tour of the waterfalls a great outing.

24 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020

Hidden in a damp rainforest gully near Cora Lynn Falls are the Cumberland Falls. There are sweeping views of the Cumberland Valley from Sovereign View. There is a 4km loop, 2 hours walk from Cambarville picnic area carpark with short steep hills, formed track and some obstacles. This breathtaking walk passes rare, mature-aged mountain ash to beneath the Big Tree, a 400-year-old giant standing 85m above the forest floor.

A steep but rewarding 1.6km return walk takes you up from the Taggerty River Valley to the falls above. A stunning clear view down to the river below the lookout allows you to see the path of the river from the falls. Melting snow and heavy rain tumbling over the falls in spring bring the valley to life.

2. Keppel Falls Not accessible until November (or later) due to the seasonal road closure of Lady Talbot Drive. Keppel Falls and spectacular views of the Taggerty River Valley can be enjoyed from a roadside lookout. If you feel like a walk, the 2km return walking track leads to a spectacular viewing platform jutting out over the river.

Cumberland Falls COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

Snobs Creek Falls Rubicon Falls Steavenson Falls 5. Steavenson Falls Located just out of Marysville on Falls Road, Steavenson Falls drops some 84m into the Steavenson River Valley making it one of Victoria’s tallest waterfalls. The falls are floodlit from dusk until 11pm. Walk 300m to the base of the falls along a walkway. Toilets and an observation deck are provided. Another viewing platform is a 20 minute walk up to the top. COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

Rubicon State Forest 6. Snobs Creek Falls Snobs Creek Falls offer spectacular views as they drop more than 100 metres over a series of rocky outcrops. It is a short walk down steep steps from the carpark to an observation platform right next to the falls.

7. Rubicon Falls Rubicon Falls is accessed by 4WD but the tracks are closed to vehicles during winter. It is, however, worth the 45 minute walk up hill to visit the falls in

winter especially after decent rainfall. Follow the Rubicon River and walk up Rubicon River Road from the power station. The falls are only visible from the road. Keep a keen eye out for the bird life especially lyrebirds.

Murrindindi Scenic Reserve Situated at the northern end of the Toolangi State Forest the reserve provides excellent opportunities for camping, bushwalking, picnicking and fishing. Visit the Cascades and Wilhelmina Falls. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020 – 25

Kinglake National Park Kinglake National Park is a great place to visit if it’s waterfalls you love.

11. Masons Falls

Wilhelmina Falls 8. Wilhelmina Falls These spectacular falls drop 75 metres down a steep granite rock face and flow all year round. The hand railed viewing point at the base of the falls is a great place to take a photo or two. Continue up the stairs to the top of the falls, here a new viewing platform is located providing spectacular views of the surrounding mountain range. The track is fairly uneven and steep in places. This is a 6km return walk from Water Gauge camping site, and suitable for experienced bushwalkers.

Strath Creek Falls

The picturesque cascading falls and picnic area at Masons Falls are the mostvisited place in the park. The 45 metre falls are close to the top of the Great Dividing Range and are particularly spectacular after heavy rain. The large shady picnic area has barbecue facilities, shelters and toilets and the falls are only a short gentle walk away.

Mt Disappointment State Forest 10. Strath Creek Falls Strath Creek Falls is an impressive 50 metre waterfall situated in the Mt Disappointment State Forest. It is accessed from Murchison Road (at the top of Murchison Gap). The last 1 kilometre drive to the carpark is steep and not suitable for caravans, buses or campervans. The walkway from the carpark to the viewing platform is a moderate incline.

Wombelano Falls 12. Wombelano Falls

Murrindindi Cascades

Masons Falls

There is a remote feel to the 15 minute walk in to Wombelano Falls along the narrow, winding bush track. Lyrebirds abound deep in the gully, while the greater gliders wait for dusk before they emerge from their homes in old-growth eucalypts. This is a particularly lovely place to visit in late winter when water flows are strong and the blackwoods are flowering.

9. Murrindindi Cascades At the Cascades, the Murrindindi River drops steeply over granite boulders. From the carpark cross the road and follow the moderately steep, stepped track, approximately 0.3km, down to where two foot bridges cross the river at the base of the Cascades. 26 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020

IG4 Taggerty Holiday Park is a family owned and run business which is in a natural bush setting on the banks of the tranquil Acheron River. Mathew and Michelle made the move from Melbourne some six years ago to enjoy the country life in the Acheron Valley. A big leap of faith was made to move the family from Melbourne (one daughter at the time, now have two daughters) and purchase a business in an industry they had never worked in before (being a motor mechanic and accountant respectively). The park needed a lot of repairs and improvements and TLC when they took over. Endless time, effort, money and even tears have gone into improving and building up the park. Many improvements have been made and include a new amenities building, new ensuite sites, a dump point, more powered and unpowered sites, an outdoor movie area, new playground equipment and dinosaur fossil dig, a basketball court, a cricket pitch, giant chess board, mini golf course makeover, games room makeover and new equipment and the latest achievement – bringing ‘glamping’ to Taggerty. BIG4 Taggerty Holiday Park now has two new safari tents and three bell tents. The safari tents are absolute camping luxury with their own ensuite, heating and cooling, kitchenette, Weber on the front deck, and a personal fire pit. They provide all the luxuries of a cabin, and more, but just with canvas walls.

The safari tents are absolute camping luxury. 28 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020

The initial bell tents were destroyed in the storms experienced in the area during January this year. Strong winds hit the park and its campers and left a lot of destruction. Determined to try again, three brand new, stronger bell tents were installed, and replacement furniture purchased. The bell tents COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

are currently unpowered to provide more rustic camping but still with a comfortable bed. Plans to provide power to the bell tents have been delayed due the financial impact of COVID-19 Pandemic. Two of the bell tents are overlooking the Acheron River on which the park is situated (the park enjoys a kilometre of river frontage). There have been many behind the scene improvements for the park as well – overhaul of the water treatment plant, improvements to the existing amenities block, pool makeover and new filtration system, new jumping pillow, more trees and the list goes on. A communal fire pit has been installed for some of the cabin guests to enjoy. Smaller fire drums have been made to be used on individual sites for guests to sit around and enjoy, especially during the cooler months. Mathew and Michelle enjoy working with local businesses to provide packages for their guests and promoting local produce and services for the benefit of the region. They enjoy showing guests the abundance of beautiful nature inspired wonders surrounding the

park. Popular activities include exploring the Cathedral Ranges and Lake Mountain, fishing in local rivers, touring local towns and wineries, four wheel driving and mountain bike riding. Children’s activities during long weekends and school holidays are a hit and include children’s movies under the stars during the warmer months. The Country Woodfired Pizza food truck and a Mr Whippy van come to the park over the busy periods to feed guests and the larger community around the park. “All of this could not have been achieved without the support and tireless effort of our staff,” says Michelle.

Above: a safari tent. Below: inside one of the new bell tents overlooking the Acheron River.

“Owning and running a Holiday Park is a totally different path in life that we have taken. However, we love the area and the chance to meet new friends, either from the area or our guests that visit our park, with many returning year after year. A much different backyard for our girls to grow up in. Luckily, as our ‘to do’ list for the park is far from finished.” Bookings can be made by phoning BIG4 Taggerty Holiday Park on 03 5774 7263, by e-mail book@

Great place, right on the main street. Fresh bread, fruit and brekky items provided, plus a warm welcome. Spa bath, kitchenette, LCD TV and comfortable furnishings,” – a recent blog message said about Waverley Guest House in Alexandra. This grand old Federation style house in Alexandra was built by the Edwards family in the early 1900’s as a guest house. Waverley started life as a single storey dwelling and with the need to expand a second story was added some years later.

Ken and Marie Bristow bought Waverley in 1987 and have tastefully renovated it to reflect the style of the bygone era, and to provide boutique accommodation for travellers. Period features, such as polished floors and timber ceilings, have been retained. It has become a favouroite place to stay with rail trailers. A secure garage is provided for bikes and cars. Recently some guests rode their bikes to Mansfield, returned two days later before returning to Melbourne, knowing their belongings were safe at Waverley. Each unit has bedroom/s with queen sized beds and

linen provided; a bathroom with a 2 person hot spa; lounge with Chesterfield couch, TV and dining table. Kitchen facilities include electric jug, toaster, bar fridge and preparation bench. Tea, coffee and milk are provided. This is the perfect setting to partake of your complementary gourmet hamper consisting of cereal, fruit juice, yoghurt, bread, croissants, muffins and other local produce as available. Tariffs range from $160 per

night to $180 per night with discounts of $10 per night for consecutive nights. Waverley Guest House is located on the corner of

Grant and Nihil Streets, in the heart of the Alexandra township, close to the shops, cafes and hotels.

olmesglen at Eildon, a local award winning conference, function and event venue . . . is missing you! During the recent COVID pandemic the business has been closed due to government restrictions that have affected everyone. Behind the scenes the team has been working hard to ensure that when restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so, they will be ready to welcome you back. Holmesglen’s Mother’s Day lunch, an all-time favourite, unfortunately did not occur, but as we come through the other side of these unsettling times, they are hopeful they will be able to welcome you back for the ever popular Christmas in July to be held this year on Saturday evening July 25. Numbers may have to be restricted – so make contact now and ensure you are on the priority booking list for when the facility is able to re-open Full details are available on the website www. holmesglenateildon.com.au including virtual tours of the accommodation and details

of all upcoming events including: Christmas in July, Father’s Day Lunch, Spring Degustation Dinner and also see ad on page three of this publication. In the close down period a small staff team have been busy behind the scenes doing super cleaning of all the accommodation rooms, and commercial kitchen, also refurbished the fireside bar lounge with new leather couches, built a giant outdoor chess board and completed the post and rail fencing around the car

park – using timber sourced on the property. The selfcontained Homestead on the property (which is usually booked every weekend), has also had a spruce up with all the timber floors polished and sanded and the walls have been painted and ready for occupancy again when restrictions are lifted Don’t forget also that Holmesglen at Eildon is the ideal venue for weddings with most weekends in spring and autumn heavily booked . . . what a great place to spend your special

day with family and friends and enjoy the full weekend away with all guests able to stay on site in our beautiful accommodation. “I am looking forward to re-opening and having all the team back at work doing what the business is renowned for and what each and every staff member enjoys doing – welcoming our guests and delighting them with our standard of service, quality catering and up to date facility with spectacular views,” says manager Rozanne Lawton. By Mike Dalmau President, LEHIA

I

n commencing this report our thoughts are with the people, families and communities that were adversely impacted by the recent bushfires this season; especially to the families of those people who lost their lives. Fortunately, Lake Eildon was not directly impacted by these bushfires, however, many businesses suffered secondary impacts. Lake Eildon is in the Mansfield Shire and the Disaster Declaration by the State Government had significant impacts on the number of visitors during this peak holiday time. We understand the reason for the Declaration and do not question it; but it had impacts on our communities. I arrived in Eildon in 1975 to manage the Golden Trout Hotel and cannot remember a quieter January during all this time. To assist in recovery, it would be great, if possible please, if you do not put off coming up to Lake Eildon for the weekend or a few days and to visit all the towns around Lake Eildon and spend money in local businesses. Overseas travel might not be a good idea currently, so encourage your family and friends to holiday in the north-east and around Lake Eildon. The houseboat industry provides a

42 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020

lot of local jobs, so if you are thinking about building, renovating or extensive maintenance, don’t put if off as the multiplier effects to our local economy are significant and positive. All the doomsday reports from back in September regarding water levels have not eventuated. At the end of January 2020, the lake was still at 40% capacity. Some people scoffed at my predictions from November 2019 and I am glad to say I didn’t quite get it right. Australia Day prediction was 37% actual was 40.26% (3.36% better off ); Easter prediction was 29%; hopefully, now looking at 32%; which is just under two Sydney Harbours or plenty of water to recreate on. Interestingly, we ended last irrigation season (May 2019) 19% behind that time last year; currently Lake Eildon is only 8.2% below this time last year and Waranga Basin is 12.5% ahead. We have made up over 10% and the long range forecasters tell me the cycle has turned and we can expect a very wet winter. Some most interesting statistics from the Stage 1 Report of the Activating Lake Eildon Project: • Visitation to Lake Eildon in 2018, 869,958 people; Mansfield 494,780 people; Murrindindi 375,178 people. • Houseboat visitors 39,516; holiday

• • •

homes 134,570; camping & caravanning 371,214; commercial accommodation 230,373 people. The top three reasons for visits: (i) escape to nature; (ii) water based recreation; (iii) outdoor or adventure activity. Average spend per visitor $153.00 Average spend for north-east Victoria $420.00 Economic impact of tourism and recreation in the Lake Eildon region 2018: total output $486.1 million; 2,548 total jobs.

This Activating Lake Eildon report indicates a substantial Tourism & Recreation Industry. However, the very low spend per visitor per visit is a concern and provides the incentive for action. Bringing this spend figure up to the spend figure for north-east Victoria will mean an annual billion dollar industry employing an increase of up to 5,000 jobs – an economic stimulus this area desperately needs. The challenge for Activating Lake Eildon is to put the right structure in place that will remove the barriers and roadblocks to enable private enterprise in, to make it happen. Just think, a change in regulation with houseboats has led to around $50 million in private investment and a significant increase in jobs. COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

W

ith its creeping habit, masses of mid-green leaves and sweet little purple-faced flowers, native violet (Viola banksii, often incorrectly labelled Viola hederacea) makes a charming groundcover and lawn substitute in shadier parts of the garden. Its hardiness and ability to adapt to a wide range of soil types and conditions make it even more appealing to the gardener looking to fill in undesirable bare patches. That those endearing blooms and verdant foliage are edible is the icing on the cake (or possibly the decoration on the cake). Native violet happily covers any spot in soil with some organic matter that stays moist and where there is some protection from the sun. However, its delicate flowers and soft leaves belie its toughness; even in harsher conditions, it can survive via its underground runners, ready to pop back up when conditions are better. The wandering nature of the native violet also makes propagation a breeze

– simply chop out a section with a node and roots then transplant. Its ability to tolerate light frost makes native violet suitable for tucked-away positions in gardens throughout the Murrindindi Shire where sun-loving plants don’t thrive and being frozen solid isn’t an issue. Native violet flowers most profusely during the warmer months but produces blooms all year. The flowers bear the classic shape of the violet family, with an amethyst-coloured circle in the centre and contrasting white edges. These cheerful, thumbnail-sized bursts of colour are especially pretty when dotted en masse above the sea of lush green foliage. The leaves of native violet have a spinachy taste, and they make a pleasant addition to other greens and vegetables in salads, stirfries and soups, bringing a dose of vitamin C and antioxidants with them. Information on the saponin content of native violet leaves is hard to come by, but many members of the Viola genus do contain

COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

saponins. Saponins may cause stomach upset if eaten in large amounts, so erring on the side of using them as a way to add a sprinkling of variety to a dish – rather than being the focus – is probably safest. Once plucked from their tall stems, the flowers have many fun applications in the kitchen, adding dainty dabs of colour to both sweet and savoury dishes. They make a delightful garnish on just about anything, including drinks and salads. They can be frozen in ice blocks, added to jams, made into syrups and candied for sweet treats or decorations with purple pizazz. Growing this easy-going Aussie in your backyard brings many benefits to the garden, including the ability to enhance areas where many other plants refuse to flourish – along the edges of shady paths, in the dim spots under other plants, or where it’s not light enough for grass to really take hold in the lawn. And along with bringing benefits to the garden, it can bring praise to your dinner parties with a touch of floral flair. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020 – 45

inter in cold temperate climates is a wonderful opportunity to set yourself up for an enjoyable and productive spring in the vegetable garden. It’s all about planning and preparation to make the most of the warmer weather, which makes for a pleasant change of pace and focus. Here are some garden tasks that will keep you occupied during the coldest months: June While it’s frosty, foggy, wet and gloomy, now is the time to put your feet up by the fire with a hot cuppa and do some reading. Get out your gardening books and seed catalogues to create a clear vision of what you want to do in the garden over the next six months. Why not get a gardening calendar or diary to map it all out? It’s also a great time to organise your current seed collection for easy access (ordering by planting month is a good way to go) and throw out any old stock that may no longer be viable.

Cleaning and maintenance of garden tools is another job to add to the July list to ensure you’re all ready to go when it’s time to get back out into the garden. You may also want to put in mail orders for bare-rooted plants now for mid to late winter planting. July Let the bare-rooted planting begin! Fruit trees, berries, rhubarb and asparagus crowns can all go in the ground now while they are in winter dormancy. Try to wait until the soil is dry enough to work with (digging up soggy soil is not only a pain, but it also upsets soil structure). Remove any damaged roots from your bare-rooted plants and soak the root ball in a seaweed solution to rehydrate. Dig a hole around three times bigger than the root ball (make it wider than it is deep), add some organic matter and any other things you need to adjust the soil, such as lime for clay-heavy or acidic soils. air pockets. Water in well, preferably with seaweed solution, and stake trees that are in exposed positions. If planting bare-rooted fruit trees, prune them back to half a dozen or so buds to restore a good root-to-shoot ratio, which will allow the tree to establish faster. If you haven’t already, maybe put in seed orders to avoid missing out on some of the more popular heirloom varieties that get snapped up when spring gardening fever hits. August Late winter is when preparation for spring should be in full swing. Now is the time to prune fruit trees while they’re still dormant. The type of fruit tree will determine the type of pruning, so if you’re unsure what to do, there are plenty of gardening books or free online tutorials that can guide you. Giving fruit trees a potassium boost before spring growth starts will help produce a bumper crop. You can use sulphate of potash, found wherever you get your

gardening supplies, or wood ash from your fire is a great free source of this macronutrient (it also contains calcium, so is good for soil tending towards the acidic). You can also start getting stuck into some of the more physical work of garden preparation. Towards the end of winter is when the weeds start to get a hold, so if you take care of them now, life will be much easier later. Once beds have the undesirables removed, you can add in the good stuff: compost, pH adjusters, manure, moisture-retention agents and anything else you need to make a happy home for your chosen crops. Last, but certainly not least, is sowing seeds for the greenhouse or cold frame to get a head start on the upcoming season. There are many vegetables that can be sown in late winter, including a long list of brassicas, so they’re ready for early spring planting. There are websites and apps like Gardenate and Organic Gardener Magazine that provide handy monthby-month planting guides for different climate zones in Australia. y name is Dr Shyam. I have been the local dentist at Alexandra Dental Clinic for well over eight years. It has truly been a wonderful experience working in such a beautiful community. A bit about my journey to here . . . I grew up in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and did my dental degree at The University of Melbourne. After finishing my studies, I enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force as a dental officer. It was a unique and exciting experience and a great steppingstone to my career. After leaving the services, an opportunity became available to work in Alexandra. My passion is to create a relationship with my patients to help them achieve their desired dental outcome. Creating a smile someone desires and boosting their confidence is a wonderful feeling, not only for the person, but also for our team. Nowadays, with new advances in tooth coloured materials, bonding technology, and teeth whitening, we can rebuild teeth and transform appearance of teeth in a simple, conservative, and painless manner. Similarly, for those finding difficulty with chewing or have given up eating certain foods because of their teeth,

we can help them with more stable solutions. Using dental implants, we can provide natural looking tooth replacement and stabilise loose dentures. Dental care has changed greatly over the last decade with new innovations. Of course, a trip to the dentist may seem daunting for some. That is why our focus is to make our patients feel comfortable and have a wonderful experience at our clinic. We have incorporated modern technology to increase the understanding of oral health for our patients. We have added measures such as ‘happy gas’ sedation to increase patient comfort. Increasing the awareness of dental conditions is an important part of our care. Most dental conditions – such as tooth decay, gum disease and mouth cancer – progress slowly and silently over months and years. We are focussed on preventing these conditions in the first place or attending to them at an early stage before they become complex and expensive care. We have taken the opportunity of being involved with schools, footy clubs, and other community services to get our message across. This has had a positive impact and been a rewarding experience.

e are living through something none of us have ever experienced in our lifetime, and we are all finding ways of dealing with the difficulties of isolation. While some are reaching for chocolate or alcohol, or bingeing on movies and netflix, others are using the time to learn new things such as cooking skills, or starting or improving their exercise regime.

below to get you through this in order to come out the other end feeling fit and fabulous. 1. Aim for a minimum 10,000 steps a day. Also try and increase that to at least 15,000 several times a week whether it’s a walk, run or class. Try and do something every day! 2. Try an online class or personal training for extra motivation. Exercise is a great way to deal with stress and improve your mental health

However for some of us it is beginning to drag on and motivation is waning. This is normal!

3. Aim to drink at least 2 litres of water a day (herbal tea is a great option on these cold days)

So what can you personally do to make best use of the time that we have been given? We need to take care of the body we have been blessed with by exercising regularly, eating and sleeping well, and staying in touch with friends and loved ones.

3. Try to choose healthy food at least 80% of the time, then the other 20% won’t set you back too far

In order to come out of this fitter and not fatter, plus both mentally and physically healthier than when it all started, there are some helpful tips 50 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020

5. Try to avoid having unhealthy food in the house – if it’s not there, you won’t need willpower to resist it! 6. Aim for 8 hours sleep a night 7. Reduce alcohol intake and try for at least 2 to 4 alcohol free days a week (or more if you can!). Before taking

the next sip or opening the next bottle, ask yourself do you really need it today, or does your body deserve a break! 8. Eat mindfully – feel the taste of the food, sit at the table and focus on your meal and don’t hurry. Enjoy every mouthful. If you are struggling to stay motivated, we have set up a free community facebook page with fitness and nutrition tips for you and free online classes. You may find you come out of “iso” fitter and healthier than ever before. https://www.facebook.com/ groups/2782148791833362/?source_ id=1086471118052109 You may have goals you need help with and Personal Training is a great option and can be done online as well as nutrition coaching. Feel free to contact Karen or Martin at PT on the Run for any advice or assistance on 0406 430 075. Remember - times are tough, but we are tougher! COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

ell renowned, locally based artist, Marian Rennie, is a powerhouse of creative endeavour. To her, there is nothing that cannot be drawn, painted, printed, decorated, cultivated, cooked or carved. Marian’s work is unique, strong, distinctive and decidedly Australian in colour and style. She has drawn and painted the countryside since childhood and continues today with a fluency developed through years of experimentation and inspiration. Marian has her gallery at Rennies at Acheron, Breakaway Road, Acheron, along with a restaurant/café and function centre situated in a stunning historic homestead garden. Once current restrictions are eased, visitors will once again always be welcome. These challenging times have required change and innovation, so it’s with great pleasure that Marian Rennie has launched her new range of designs for homeware, décor and fashion items available through Red Bubble, a Melbourne based online company that works with artists internationally. Check out Marian’s shop at https://www.redbubble.com/ people/marianrennie/shop. You’ll be delighted with the creations and variety on offer, from coffee cups to phone covers, from scarves to blankets, notepads and cards and everything in between. It’s a great way to support local.

ach year the Murrindindi Beanie & Fibre Festival and beanie competition brings so much joy and colour to the community as the humble beanie takes on a life of its own. For most visitors to the Beanie Festival in Alexandra, the weekend is a fabulous time to purchase some pretty funky beanies and unique handmade winter warmers. This year, however, is a little different and we are excited to announce that our fibre family both near and far will have the opportunity to purchase our wonderful creations via online auction. The Beanie Fest relies on winter warmers and beanies being created and donated from fabulous local fibre artists, both beginners and experienced creators alike are encouraged to enter the competition. Each item with their colourful designs, high standard and attention to detail will be held in quarantine before being

photographed and available for sale via online auction. Bidding progress can be monitored via your iPhone, iPad or computer. With many in isolation at the moment, it is a great time to learn how to knit or crochet or refine your technique and be part of this funky fibre event. Festival fun features the theme ‘On the Farm’, and anyone can enter including children and beginners – prize cards awarded to all levels of ability and age. This year the Beanie Fest will be held from Saturday 25 July to Saturday 1 August. For information on the Beanie Fest Competition, category details, or to place a bid, check out the Beanie Fest website https://beanie. org.au/ We are a small volunteer organization with a passion for all things fibre and we provide a great event for the community and support smaller causes in our beautiful Murrindindi region. I

nspired by a quote from her father, John Rennie – “There’s nothing like walking over a place. You have to live there, walk over the ground, to get a feel of it” – Marian used this insight as the theme for a sculpture exhibition. Within the Land – Sculpture in Acheron Show and Exhibition is an exciting, artistic event showcasing sculpture in Marian Rennie’s historic rural garden at Rennies at Acheron, 132 Breakaway Road, Acheron. At this stage, it’s planned that the opening show weekend will be 24 and 25 October 2020, commencing with a cocktail party on Friday, 23 October from 5pm to 7.30pm. A local market of about 20 stalls and busker-style entertainment will be a feature on the Saturday and Sunday. The licensed restaurant/cafe will be open on both days. Along with this year’s sculpture exhibition, there’ll also be an art show entitled “The Delights of Gastronomy.”

Following the success of the inaugural exhibition and sculpture sales in 2018, it’s anticipated that Within the Land – Sculpture Show at Acheron will become a biannual event and will encourage established and emerging artists and sculptors from across Australia to display their works and engage with other artists and a diverse, interested community. Local, interstate and indigenous artists are encouraged to participate as this will be a unique opportunity to exhibit and sell work in a renowned garden, surrounded by extensive farm and bushland along the Goulburn River, located just 2 hours from Melbourne.

At the 2018 event, the show consisted of over 150 exhibits from Australian and international sculptors and botanical artists. As a result, 1800 visitors were drawn to Acheron and district and more than 40% of the works were sold. Visit the Little River Wines website www. littleriverwines.com.au/events for the application form and submission details or ring Marian on 0412 109 129.

Entry to the exhibition throughout the garden and art show in the galleries will be by gold coin donation at the gate. It’s anticipated the exhibition and show will run until 29 November 2020 and be open to the public each weekend and public holiday and at other times nominated by the management committee. The licensed restaurant/café will operate concurrently throughout the duration. As the title suggests, the sculpture show’s theme is a journey through landscape, nature, the Australian bush and its inherent profoundness, quirkiness, characters, as well as the emotion and celebration all that inspires. Concerts4Causes Red Rain concert with Soloman and Lacey

W

ith the disruption caused by Coronavirus and the subsequent postponements of the Murrindindi Wine Weekend and the Red Rain Benefit Concert – Soloman and Lacey have brought forward the release of their new song, Red Rain. Red Rain is a deeply moving and poignant ballad, written and performed by Narbethong based, talented singer/songwriters, Gary Soloman and his daughter, Tallulah, aka Soloman and Lacey. Following the horrendous bushfire season throughout Australia in 2019 and early 2020, the song is written from the perspective of our youth with a focus on climate change and its profound impacts. This beautiful song was also the inspiration for a painting by Marian Rennie with additions from the children at St Mary’s and Alexandra primary schools. Along with two special releases from Little River Wines for the occasion, these elements were to be a foundation for the Red Rain Concert at Alexandra Town Hall in September to raise needed funds for our local fire brigades. “Our fireys have come back from Gippsland and southern NSW brave-faced but exhausted, with trucks in need of repair and equipment and resources damaged and depleted. Most of us realise we in Murrindindi escaped a bullet this year, but we’re also learning the terrible lesson of the necessity to be extremely well-prepared, with the right equipment to fight fires and deal with other natural disasters if and when they should occur in our region again,” says Concert4Causes co-host, Christine Challen. Concerts4Causes organisers are hopeful that the concert and fundraising efforts can still take place at a future date. In the meantime, digital downloads of Red Rain are available from Itunes, Spotify and the usual download platforms. All download proceeds will go to the Alexandra group of Fire Brigades as originally planned.

ith seven albums and 12 single releases between them ‘Soloman and Lacey’ are Gary Soloman and Tallulah Lacey. Their rootsy, contemporary pop songs have distinctive melodies, infectious rhythms and an instantly recognizable sound. Soloman grew up in the Australian outback travelling from town to town and attended 25 different primary schools. Searching for stability Gary left home at 15 with ‘bass in hand’ became a protégé of legendary Australian bassist, Ron Terry. By the age of 18, Gary had already performed with Bo Diddley and as he continued his musical journey, he played bass as a member of The Drifters and with a host of other top Australian performing/recording artists including Doug Parkinson, John Paul Young, John Young, John St Peters, Ross Hannaford, Ricky May, Colleen Hewitt (to name a few). He went on to achieve two charting hits in Australia as a bassist in the Marie Wilson touring band from 1992-2000. Lacey’s baptism into Rock ‘n’ Roll began at a very young age and she was often found backstage curled up asleep in her father’s guitar case. A trained dancer and singer, she won numerous state wide song and dancing awards. It wasn’t long before she was also found centre stage performing with the Veronicas at the age of sixteen. With a strong and infectious voice, Tallulah contributes in equal measure to the Soloman and Lacey sound. Their song writing has a distinctive Pop Rock feel, mixed with soul and R’n’B roots throughout. The red dust, gypsy blues is never far from the surface of their songs that deal with love, loss, social and environmental issues. Soloman Lacey’s philosophy is simple: “Let the muse guide our way, be the best we can become and allow synchronicity to direct our musical journey.” Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2020 – 59

nter 2020 with a whole new calendar of quarterly exhibitions for Rustic Simplicity ready to kick off, and just as we were about to hold our first opening, the news of COVID-19 and the cancellation of all events hit the press ~ the best laid plans!

Fast forward to the end of May with restrictions easing and galleries able to open, BUT, may only operate within the severely restricted limitation of one person per four square metres and a distance of 1.5m between patrons adhered to at all times.

As a gallery we were forced to close with the announcement of ‘essential services only’ as part of the Victorian Stage 2 Restrictions put in place at the end of March.

Well, if ever you’ve ventured into Rustic Simplicity @ The Shear ‘N’ shedS, you’ll appreciate what a challenge that is, especially when you are one person dealing with the clientele of two businesses in a very narrow and particularly long physical space!

Although Barber Shops are classified as essential services, Gail of ‘The Shear ‘N’ shedS (our resident barber) falls into the high risk category, as she has chronic asthma; and whilst well, the advice for that vulnerable category is to ‘stay home’.

So for the time being, it is as our new Murrindindi Shire Council #supportlocal campaign suggests ~ Business as Unusual ~ strange days are these for us all eh?

For Rustic Simplicity that means embracing online shopping with local pick-up and home delivery, and postage for further afield orders. Please simply visit our Rustic Simplicity Facebook page and click on the ‘Shop’ tab – bear with us as we continue to upload products; just ask if what you are after hasn’t been uploaded yet. Please contact Cindy Anne Ferguson at Rustic Simplicity via FB Message/ Messenger/ Phone/ Text/ Email to order directly, or to arrange a shop visit by appointment only. Please see ad in this edition for contact details. Look forward to hearing from you to talk you through your ideas for gifts for self and/ or another. Happy online (local) shopping!

A

re you seeking a nice quiet read in these difficult times? Well look no further. Catherine and Jeremy at Books at Yarck are here to help. Their comfy well stocked second hand bookshop at Yarck has a surprisingly wide collection. As a result of the recent restrictions, the shelves are full to overflowing, and these titles would love to find a new home with eager readers.

The shop has been trading for nine years now and Catherine and Jeremy are looking forward to catching up with old customers and new readers. If you are looking for a particular book that isn’t in stock, Catherine will try to find it for you. She has had many years’ experience as both a “book detective” and an “information detective” (sometimes called a librarian). During the current restrictions, when the passing traffic has been greatly reduced, the bookshop hours have been restricted to two or three hours, usually in the middle of the day. Customers can ring Catherine on 0400 418 139 to find out if the shop is open, to make a time to come in and browse, or to find out if a book is in stock. Books can be delivered to customers in the local area. Customer service is the top priority of Books at Yarck. Books at Yarck is part of the group of Yarck traders who are still open to serve the community and help people get through this stressful time. COVID-19 PANDEMIC TRADING RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY

Now in its fifth year, Murrindindi Winemakers are opening their cellar doors in October (TBC) to celebrate locally grown and made wines. Participating venues include both those with established cellar doors and small wineries that are not generally open to the public. “The Murrindindi Wine Weekend is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on our local wine heroes. Murrindindi wines are proof of the old saying ‘winemaking starts in the vineyard”, says Adrian Utter, chair of Murrindindi Winemakers. “This year six local wineries
