Zom8ie’s clocksmith, Patrick O’Neill, holding a clock from the 1700s that requires his antiquarian horologist expertise to get back to working order.
By Emily Friedel n the face of it, antique clocks don’t seem to have much in common with the living dead. But for Zom8ie’s clocksmith, Patrick O’Neill, restoring old timepieces is much like reanimating lifeless bodies. So, while his technical title is antiquarian horologist (a horologist being someone who studies and practices the measurement of time), he is also a resurrector. “I got work experience with a watchmaker in high school and restored an alarm clock. When I’d finished putting it together, it was wound up, and it came back to life. And that was it, I was in love. Bringing things back to life is what I really enjoy,” Patrick says.
O
Just like zombies, antique clocks are full of all sorts of interesting things when you start poking around in their guts. Pulling out the insides of a clock may reveal elaborate decorative engravings on its brass parts or the signature of a repairer who worked on it a few centuries ago. Patrick says the stories encapsulated in these time-keeping instruments are part of the romance of working with them. “There’s a lot of history inscribed into clocks. I worked on one where the dial and parts of the front of it had been taken off, and inside was inscribed that Hitler had raided something and Hitler had gone mad with all the dates. So it had been used Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021 – 11
Above: Patrick also puts his clocksmith skills to use giving old machines new life, like this car made from an antique sewing machine. Left: The insides of clocks can be full of all sorts of surprises, like the elaborate hand-engraving on the brass parts seen here. to communicate these events, which was pretty amazing to find.” Patrick undertakes his clock resurrections in a workshop that looks like it belongs in another era – a fitting anachronism for a man devoted to objects of the past. The workshop is filled with clocks of all shapes and sizes, from grandfather clocks to cuckoo clocks to carriage clocks. The workshop is also filled with their sounds: incessant ticking perforated by occasional chiming. To the uninitiated, the noise is intense, but Patrick says he doesn’t even notice anymore after being immersed in it for the better part of 32 years. “It’s like sitting in an office with people tapping on keyboards, you just get used to it. I have to actually stop every now and then to listen to make sure they’re striking the right amount and that sort of thing.” Tucked away in his time-warped workshop, Patrick relishes the challenge of repairing antique clocks. Due to the accuracy required of clocks, all their moving parts must be working 12 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021
in perfect harmony. Consequently, restoring function to a time-worn clock can be tricky business. The repair process often requires total dissection, and it’s common for Patrick to fashion a replacement part from scratch – a skill he learned from a fourth-generation German watchmaker as an apprentice. “He taught me all the old-fashioned ways of doing things. I looked at a part for clock that I had to make and had no idea where to start; it was completely overwhelming. And he asked me if I knew how to make a rocking horse – I was 15, I had no idea. He told me, take a really big bit of wood and cut off everything that doesn’t look like a horse, and it’s the same with making this part. Start with a big bit of brass and cut off everything that doesn’t look like it. Now there’s nothing I can’t make realistically.” Along with patience and persistence, sensitivity to aesthetics is crucial for antique clock repairs because much of their value lies in their intricate innards. Patrick has a stash of old brass for colour matching ‘new’ parts to the original, along with a collection of rust-pitted steel that looks suitably aged. With restored clocks, extensive testing to ensure they keep perfect time is also a must. “Any clock I finish I run in the workshop for at least four weeks to make sure it’s keeping time, striking correctly and behaving itself. Quite often with antiques one part might look fine, but when you clean all the dirt off it and actually put it in motion, something might fall off because the dirt was holding it together. So you might have to repair that part and put it back together again.” Some clocks have additional functions requiring incredibly complicated mechanisms, which demand equally complicated repairs. Very fiddly engineering underpins special features such as buttons that repeat the chimes of the last hour, quarters, and minutes. These features present unusual and intriguing problems for those who dare to repair them, and Patrick is known for taking on jobs other clocksmiths avoid. Patrick’s skills in this department also translate to other antiquated machines, such as automata dolls. “You’ve got things like musical birds –
Patrick’s workshop is filled with clocks of amazing array of shapes, sizes, ages and designs. they’re pretty full on. You have a little silver box and you push the lever on the side, the lid pops open and a miniature bird with feathers comes out. It flaps its wings, it turns and spins, and basically sings, and there are all little bellows and pumping things inside and stuff going everywhere – it’s just completely mad.” As well as tackling difficult jobs for customers, Patrick goes the extra mile by picking up and returning customers’ clocks. This part of the service is about more than convenience for the
customer: it is vital for making sure a restored clock works properly. All it takes is an unlevel sideboard or a spongy section of floor to throw an antique clock’s ticking out of whack. “When I was working for another gentleman, we had a lady who brought a clock back three times because it kept stopping. So we went out to her house, walked down the hallway and pushed on the floor. When we did that, the sideboard the clock was on moved, the pendulum swung and hit the case and Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021 – 13
Patrick at work with bowls full of innards from a dissected clock. stopped. So she needed to move it from that spot to a more stable surface.” For Patrick’s customers, there is an important difference between their resurrected clocks and zombies, with the former being a source of joy rather than horror. Hearing the regular ticking of a once lifeless family heirloom and having the precious history it holds reanimated can be emotional, in a good way. “I restored a clock for a lady. The case was all broken, the insides were all
damaged, the dial was a wreck, and the glass was even broken – it had a picture on it. This clock had been in her family forever; her mother loved it. The case had been to two different French polishers. The first one died within six months of having it, and the next one died as well.
believe it because that had probably been an eight-year journey from when she gave it to the first French polisher.”
“So, when I got it in, I did the clock as quickly as I possibly could. I restored everything, took it back to her house and unwrapped it, and she burst into tears and hugged me – she couldn’t
And as for the future of Zom8ie’s clocksmith services? Only time will tell.

Patrick says these sorts of reactions keep him in the resurrecting business – they’re another part of the romance of being an antiquarian horologist, bringing dead clocks back to life.

ogs may have roughly five times fewer tastebuds than humans, but those tastebuds can be very discerning when it comes to their beloved treats. According to Barkery Deluxe Dog Treats customer reports, some dogs will
display a definite preference for one flavour over another. Some prefer the Peanut Butter & Liver Chip Donuts while others drool for the Liver & Bacon Biscuits. Of course, some will scoff down just about anything, but lots of dogs will refuse any treats other than their absolute favourite. “One of our customers told us that if her German shepherd doesn’t get a Peanut Butter & Liver Chip Donut every morning, he sulks. She’s tried other products, but nothing else will do. Another customer told us that her dog would get one of our treats as a reward after going outside to pee. Her dog figured this out and is now faking the need to go out three times a night and refuses to come back in until the treat jar comes out,”
18 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021
Barkery co-owner Roxane Coutts says. While the dogs are focused on the tastiness of their snacks, Roxane and coowner Corrin Elliott care about more than how canine tastebuds will react to their goodies. Corrin and Roxane, who are the head chefs as well as everything else for the business, are very particular about what goes into their treats. “We decided on all natural because we saw how much bad stuff there is on the shelves, things like imported ingredients that are irradiated and others that are full of preservatives and salt. A lot of people just don’t realise how unhealthy and sometimes even dangerous some of the other products on the market are. The more we got into it, the more we
learned, and the more horrifying we found some products to be. We could have just imported everything or bought from interstate, packaged it up and slapped our brand on it, that way we wouldn’t need our PrimeSafe licence, but that’s just not the standard and quality we want for our products– the dog food industry is quite unregulated in many ways,” Roxane says. So, four years ago, Roxane and Corrin did some research, spent a hundred bucks each on ingredients, and had a go at baking some dog biscuits at home. The idea was to start up a dog treat side business they could fit in around family and other work. “We started with a few markets, created a few different types of biscuits and some meat products. We were baking them in our home kitchens. We’d bake all day to make our dog treats and then pack it all away, make dinner for the kids, then get it all back out again to make more dog treats,” Corrin says. Since the beginning, the Barkery chefs have been committed to using only high-quality ingredients and steering clear of any nasties that might harm people’s four-legged friends. “If we can’t make it from scratch, we don’t sell it. We turn perfectly good human food into dog treats. There is nothing that we use that isn’t human-grade,” Roxane says. “We list all our ingredients on our packaging, we’re very proud of how natural and healthy our treats are; we don’t use preservatives, salt or any other additives. We always do our best to source Australian ingredients Right: The Barkery’s other chief taste-tester, Corrin’s dog Frank. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021 – 19
made by hand, but in a dedicated space – or minifactory as Corrin calls it – that is starting to look very much like a commercial kitchen with a large mixer and a professional pastry sheeter. “Our gradual equipment upgrades have made life a lot easier. Now the pastry sheeter does all the dough rolling for us and saves our shoulders and arms,” Corrin says. “We’re fully licensed now with PrimeSafe, which is a government body, so we uphold the same quality and food safety procedures as a butcher. We have the same regulations as meat for human consumption. Our products have also qualified to carry the official Australian Made logo,” Roxanne adds.
Above: One of Barkery’s happy customers. and all the meat in our products is 100% Australian. We also consulted with a vet to ensure all of our recipes are safe,” Corrin adds.
20 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021
These days, the dog treats are no longer made in Corrin’s and Roxane’s kitchens between family meals. They’re still lovingly
As demand for their premium dog treats has grown, Barkery has evolved into a fulltime operation for Corrin and Roxane, accumulating many loyal customers along the way – sometimes out of necessity. “People come back and say, ‘I have to buy your treats now because all the other stuff I’ve got in the cupboard, the
dog won’t touch, they’ll only eat yours!” Corrin says. “That’s the kind of feedback that makes all the hard work worth it,” Roxane adds. “We just love dogs. They’re the only creatures that will love you unconditionally and show pure joy just because you’ve come home. They’re part of the family,” Corrin says. “And they don’t complain like the kids do!” adds Roxane So, if you’re looking for something to show your loving pet some appreciation, Barkery Deluxe Dog Treats has plenty of options to suit any pooch’s tastes, even the most discerning. Turkey Tail

rom my home in Kinglake, the tail of summer quickly fades. It is always sometime between late march and mid-April when the cold blows in quickly and with force. It announces its arrival with a chill that causes most of us to sit up and take notice of the ever-changing nature of the seasons. The rain is usually not too far behind. By early May, I always find myself wondering how it got so cold outside, and so cozy inside. But no matter how alluring the fireplace is in early winter, I know there’s so much to explore outdoors. During the early winter months, the forests and farmlands are transformed as a whole world of activity starts to happen beneath our feet, and strange lifeforms begin popping out between the cracks in the soil. The mushrooms. Neither plant nor animal, fungi, and their familiar form, the mushroom, are everywhere. And when it comes to the fungal kingdom, Murrindindi Shire truly is a winter wonderland.
If you’ve ever been curious about the types of mushrooms found in Murrindindi, or wanted to learn about how they have fed, inspired, and healed us for thousands of years, then there’s no better time of the year to get outside (with a jacket and beanie of course) and get exploring! Murrindindi is home to hundreds, and maybe even thousands, of fungus species. Many of these species (potentially up to 25 per cent) have never been identified by western scientists. So if you’re a budding naturalist wanting to have your very own species named after you, then a mushroom is a good bet. But our history with mushrooms goes back much further than scientific names and laboratories. For thousands of years, Indigenous cultures, not only in Australia but across the world, have incorporated mushrooms into their diets and spiritual practices. Yet today, knowledge of and interest in wild mushrooms is minimal. Most of us only think about mushrooms
when buying common varieties in the supermarket aisles. This is a shame because many varieties found across the Murrindindi Shire are considered some of the tastiest and most sought after globally. Some have proven medicinal properties, while others contain lifethreatening toxins. When it comes to mycology (the study of mushrooms and fungi), nothing is ever simple! What I do know, however, is that learning to notice the mushrooms in the forests and fields and parks is not only a fun activity for young or old, but can help us all to connect more deeply with the natural world and appreciate the deep interconnectedness of the ecosystems we so often pass by without second thought. Mushroom season starts slowly, with a small number of species arriving as early as February after decent rain. But once the cold has set in there’s no slowing down as hundreds of species begin erupting across every corner of Murrindindi Shire, from the wet, dark forests of Kinglake and Toolangi Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021 – 23
Amanita ocrophylla (not edible) (a type of fungus) make possible most fermented foods, such as bread, beer, and wine? Without yeasts, we’d be stuck with grape juice and raw barley! Other fermented foods such as kombucha can provide our digestive system with probiotics that improve our health and overall wellbeing. Fungi are also crucial for plants, who rely on below-ground fungal systems (called mycelial networks), for essential nutrients that make growth above ground possible. In exchange for minerals and nutrients, plant species feed their fungal partners with sugars and other carbon-based compounds that help the fungus thrive and remove carbon from the atmosphere as a byproduct. In fact, fungi could be a crucial tool in fighting climate change because they are experts at working with plants and trees to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and into the soil.
Saffron Milk Cap to the cold and frosty pastoral valleys surrounding Yea and much of the shire. While there are many large and conspicuous varieties to be seen, small, tiny fungi abound, colonising entire ecosystems but only noticeable by the keenest eyes (or noses!).
of life totally separate from the animal kingdom (Animalia) and the plant kingdom (Plantae). They are as mysterious as they are alluring yet offer our communities so much potential as sources of nourishment, medicine, and pleasure.
All mushrooms are a fungus, a kingdom
For example, did you know that yeasts
24 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021
Although it is a topic we could write an entire article about, recent research even suggests that mycelial networks allow trees and plants to communicate amongst each other, such as to warn nearby trees about insect attacks. This phenomenon has been called the ‘Wood Wide Web’. Animals and insects, for their part, also love the mushroom season. Many
of Australia’s native critters are big mushroom eaters, while insects eat and burrow their way into many species, either for shelter or to raise a family. I hope these examples give you an idea about how important and fascinating the hidden world of mushrooms and fungi really is. Without them, many of the foods we eat today simply wouldn’t exist. They connect our forests and help maintain the delicate balance of life that is essential for our survival. They feed and nourish us, are totally delicious, and can help cure ailments of many kinds. So, as you wander the hills and valleys of the Murrindindi Shire over the next few months, pause and take notice of the mushrooms surrounding you. Appreciate them for their beauty and thank them for all that they do. And if you’re feeling more adventurous, pick up a field guide and begin foraging for your own mushrooms, a genuinely sustainable harvest we can all enjoy. To learn about mushrooms and funguses in the Kinglake Ranges, follow the Instagram account @ fungusofkinglake. Do not consume any wild mushrooms unless you are sure about their toxicity. Many edible mushrooms have highly toxic look-alikes. Mushrooms you might see in Kinglake Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) A well-known mushroom that provides numerous health benefits. It is approved for cancer treatments in Japan and is commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. You can find turkey tails on fallen logs throughout the Kinglake Ranges Saffron Milk Cap (Lactarius deliciosus) Its scientific name, ‘deliciosus’, might give it away, but the saffron milk cap is one of the tastiest mushrooms you’ll ever enjoy. It can be found wherever there are pine trees because both tree and fungus live in a symbiotic (mycorrhizal) relationship. It is easy to
Coprinus comatus identify because of its mottled milky cap and stem. Amanita ocrophylla A huge mushroom that can reach weights of over 1kg. This mushroom is commonly seen on roadsides and is fairly easy to identify due to its large size. It is only found in south-eastern Australia and is not edible.
Coprinus comatus Known by names such as shaggy ink cap, lawyer’s wig, or shaggy mane, this incredible fungus is not only celebrated for its incredible taste, but also contains auto-digesting enzymes that turn a picked mushroom into an ink-black goo in less than a day. This natural ink has been used for thousands of years for writing and illustrating. Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021 – 25

Agile antechinus are are tiny, but mighty. Photo Mel Williams from Melbourne, Australia, CC BY 2.0 <https://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by/2.0>, via Wikimedia Commons
Q&A with Zoos Victoria’s Dr Marissa Parrott Agile antechinus (Antechinus agilis) are the smallest of the dasyurids, the family of marsupials including Tasmanian devils and quolls. Despite their somewhat mousey appearance, agile antechinus are ferocious predators just like their larger cousins. Zoos Victoria’s reproductive biologist, Dr Marissa Parrott, shares her expert knowledge on these captivating creatures and some of their quirks. How long have you been studying and working with agile antechinus? I met my first agile antechinus nearly 20 years ago when I was studying during my university honours year. I found the agile antechinus so fascinating because they have such big personalities, so the following year I started my PhD researching their breeding success and female mate choice. This was the first published work on female mate choice in a marsupial, and I have been working with antechinus ever since. I ran four years of field surveys at Mount Disappointment State Forest in
Victoria, two years of captive breeding and reintroduction programs, and have genotyped over 500 agile antechinus. I also worked in the field with the larger and more docile dusky antechinus during my PhD and beyond. Since then, I have continued to work with antechinus in places like the Otways, Grampians, Strathbogie Ranges, across the alpine zone and even with antechinus living wild at Healesville Sanctuary. Where are they found in Victoria and in what sorts of habitats? There are 15 species of antechinus (plus some subspecies), which generally live in forests, woodlands, rainforests, heath, and occasionally in grasslands of Australia. Most nest in communal groups in tree hollows, though females will nest alone when they are raising their young. In Victoria, we have four species of antechinus (the agile, yellowfooted, swamp and dusky antechinus), which are found in woodlands, wet temperate rainforest, heath, tussocky grassland, coastal scrub and even alpine boulder fields.
How would you describe them and their role in the ecosystem? Agile antechinus are tiny, but mighty! They are carnivorous marsupials and are clever, fast and voracious hunters. They largely eat invertebrates, but will also eat small birds, reptiles, mammals – pretty much anything that moves. Agile antechinus are known to kill and eat animals that are bigger than themselves, like mice. They also eat pollen, berries, flowers and some vegetation. The agile antechinus is the smallest antechinus species, weighing between 16 and 44 grams, and the largest is the dusky antechinus, weighing up to 170 grams. The males can grow up to twice the size of females. Many species are nocturnal, though some of the larger species are active during the day. Antechinus are an important part of their ecosystem. While they are tiny, but impressive predators of small animals, they are also preyed on by larger animals such as owls, snakes, quolls and others. Some species, like the dusky antechinus, often dig for their prey and thus aid the turnover of soil and Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021 – 27

They have quite an unusual reproductive strategy – can you tell us a bit about that? Antechinus reproduction is amazing! In the agile antechinus, females have an up to two weeks, highly synchronised breeding period in winter, which means they can then raise and wean young when lots of food is available in spring. They will mate with up to seven males during their breeding season and can give birth to litters of young with up to five fathers.

Females choose males based on scent, with those that are genetically dissimilar to the females being most popular – this is how they avoid inbreeding and produce the healthiest young. Females can store sperm in specialised crypts in their oviducts (fallopian tubes) for up to two weeks, and the males they mate with closest to ovulation will sire the largest number of young. Through this method they can ‘trade up’ to better or more compatible males as they meet them across the breeding season. The males will generally mate with all the females that they can, fight, stop eating, and at the end of the breeding period will die from stress and gastric bleeding (called male semelparity or ‘die-off’). The females live on to raise the young.
Above: Dr Marissa Parrott is the Reproductive Biologist in the Wildlife Conservation and Science Team at Zoos Victoria. She works across Healesville Sanctuary, Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Zoo and a variety of field locations to improve reintroduction and captive breeding success for some of Australia’s most threatened species. Photo courtesy Zoos Victoria. Depending on the species, females have between six and 13 teats in their pouches (generally eight or 10 in agile antechinus) and can raise that equivalent number of young.
Young agile antechinus are born after a 27-day pregnancy and generally stay with their mothers for around three months. The young females will often stay close to their mother’s home range,
but the young males disperse away after weaning to find their own homes. Males will only live for up to 11 months, and most females will only live to raise one litter, though some (especially Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021 – 29

the larger species, or species that raise smaller litters) can survive to two or even three years and raise one litter of young per year. The longest ever recorded life span of an antechinus was a captive female agile antechinus at Healesville Sanctuary who lived to nearly six years old. Are they facing any challenges as a species? Antechinus face many threats across their range, in particular habitat destruction, predation by introduced predators like cats and foxes, bushfires and drought. During extreme droughts, the agile antechinus may not be able to find much food, may be underweight and struggle to produce or raise their young. Many antechinus nest in tree hollows, thus old-growth forests with trees older than 200 years are very important for them. Gum trees only start to develop hollows that larger animals, or groups of smaller animals, can live in after they are 200 years old. While some antechinus species are more widespread, others including the black tailed antechinus and silverheaded antechinus are endangered. There are major concerns for both species, especially following Australia’s Black Summer (2019-20) bushfires. 30 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021
You can help protect antechinus by keeping your pet cats safely contained indoors (learn more about RSPCA Victoria’s and Zoos Victoria’s Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife joint initiative by visiting safecat.org.au for tips). You can also help by leaving outdoor understorey and logs in place that give important cover and hunting opportunities for the antechinus. Never collect logs from the bush as firewood – it destroys wildlife homes. How can people identify agile antechinus (and distinguish them from introduced rodents)? While antechinus can be a similar size to native and introduced rodents, there are some strong distinguishing features. They have very pointy noses and large, bright eyes. Their ears are shaped like a butterfly, with a fold in the middle, rather than being round like a mouse’s ears. They have very sharp, pointed teeth and large canines like other carnivores (like a quoll’s teeth), rather than having 2 large front teeth like a rodent. Antechinus tails are well furred, unlike rodent tails which are often bald or with very little fur. Being marsupials, females have a shallow pouch with nipples arranged within it, and males have large, wellfurred testes. Agile antechinus are very
good climbers and can climb trees and leap between branches very quickly, unlike mice, which largely stay on the ground. What should people do if they have agile antechinus nesting in their house? It is rare for antechinus to nest in people’s houses, but it can happen. If you find antechinus, keep your pet cats and dogs safely contained or kept well away from them. Over spring and summer, females will have young in their nests so they need to be left alone and quiet, but at other times of the year, you can wait until they are out at night and then block up any holes they may be moving through. Otherwise, it is best to call your local council to have a professional come to help safely move them. Antechinus are a native species and thus are protected, so do not put out mouse traps or bait as these will also kill antechinus. As such impressive hunters, where there are antechinus there are likely fewer mice, spiders and other smaller creatures too, so they are very useful little neighbours. Antechinus are truly amazing animals! Keep your eye out in the bush and you may be lucky enough to see one of these wonderful tiny natives!

By Emily Friedel The nankeen kestrel (Falco cenchroides), also known as the Australian kestrel, is a pigeon-sized bird of prey that holds the title of Australia’s smallest raptor. It’s also in the top ten most commonly seen birds across the country, making it an easy subject for even the most amateur of twitchers or wildlife photographers.
are partially migratory, going north the warmer areas in the winter. Others move in response to food availability, while established pairs in southern grasslands often take up permanent residency. Some even pop across to New Zealand for the odd holiday. They are usually seen as single birds or in pairs but may form loose flocks of up to 30 birds when conditions are conducive.
Description
Feeding
The nankeen kestrel grows to about 34 centimetres long (anywhere between 31 to 36 centimetres) and has a slender build. It has rufous colouring along its back, a pale underside and a black-tipped tail. In combination with its diminutive stature, this general colouring pattern is a good means of distinguishing the nankeen kestrel from other native raptors (birds of prey with hooked beaks and long, sharp talons).
The nankeen kestrel’s diet is varied, and they hunt all sorts of prey from insects through to small birds and mammals. They watch for prey either from a perch or hovering with outstretched wings, using their fan-shaped tails as a rudder while keeping their heads still. This distinctive hovering pattern is another good way of identifying nankeen kestrels – the only other Australasian raptors that hover proficiently, the elanid kites, have vastly different colouring.
Within the species, and between genders, the dark streaking found throughout the plumage varies significantly. Females tend to be bigger, more heavily marked and more rufous on the crown and tail. The young resemble females but are usually even more heavily marked. Distribution and habitat Nankeen kestrels are widespread across the Australian mainland. They are also found in Tasmania and other islands along the Australian coastline, as well as in New Guinea and Indonesia. They happily inhabit just about anywhere that’s not too densely vegetated – the open woodlands and cleared agricultural areas around the Murrindindi Shire are ideal places to spot one. Nankeen kestrels have no clear migratory pattern. Some 38 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021
Once prey is spotted, the kestrel will position itself to pounce by moving closer to the ground. They will also catch winged prey mid-air and snatch snacks from tree branches. Breeding The nankeen kestrel’s breeding season begins in late winter when they lay between three and seven eggs, which are incubated solely by the female and hatch 26 to 28 days later. They can raise multiple broods in a good season. Nankeen kestrels aren’t particularly fussy about their nest sites and will make homes in a variety of places, including tree hollows, cliff ledges, building ledges, disused corvid nests and even on the ground. Pairs are typically monogamous and often use the same nest site for successive breeding seasons.

ith trout season coming to an end at 12.01am on Tuesday 15 June until 11.59pm on Friday 3September in all of our rivers and tributaries for all hook and line fishing, our only option for a chance of catching a trout is either Eildon Pondage or Lake Eildon. These regulations are put in place to allow the natural spawning run of trout as they become very aggressive and will strike at almost anything. Brown trout. Photo courtesy VRFish

Eildon Pondage is a great place for a day or two to come and fish with the family. It has a regular stocking of both rainbow and brown trout of all sizes coming from Victorian Fisheries main hatcheries just up the road at Snobs Creek. When these fish are released into the pondage they can be caught on all types of bait including powerbait, local dough, worms and Mudeyes (dragon fly larvae), lures and flies. Hot areas to fish are Burke Road, Riverside Drive and the floating pontoon on the Future Fish Eildon Fishing Trail. To fish for trout in Lake Eildon it pays to have a watercraft to be able to access the large arms and deep water for some trolling
using lures like Tassie Devils, Rapala, and Stump Jumpers. Speed of 2kms per hour or a speed that has your lure working efficiently is recommended. There are also options for land based fishing in the arms and inlets. Casting lures or bait fishing with a floating rig is recommended with first and last light which is the best time for this method of fishing. Lake Eildon hosts a large variety of fish from English perch (redfin), roach, trout both rainbow and brown, yellow belly, European carp (which must not be returned to the water alive) and the mighty Murry cod. Most of these fish become less active during this time, mainly due to the low water temperature but trout and large Murry cod really become active and your chance of catching a large sized Murry cod increases. Baits such as large yabbies, wood grubs, chicken fillets,

scrub worms, cheese chunks and even steamed dim sims will attract these fish. Large lures like swim baits, spinner baits, deep diving lures and surface lures are all used. Fishing from the shore line around the lake can be very productive, especially around fallen timber and deep drop offs where there is large rock or slate formations as these areas are prime spots for a large cod to hold up and ambush its prey. Fishing by water craft can make this easier especially with the help of a fish finder or depth sounder, moving
around the lake and finding structure or steep drop offs as well as finding the fish is a massive bonus. Murry cray fish season starts on 1 June until 31 August; the daily limit of two cray fish per person and size limits of a minimum of 10 cm carapace length and a maximum of 12 cm carapace length apply. Female cray fish carrying eggs under their tail must be released immediately. Measuring devices can be obtained from your local tackle shop or by calling Victorian Fisheries customer
service centre on 136 186. The Goulburn River and Lake Eildon have different regulations on equipment used so check the Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide for all your necessary information. The use of chicken frames, ox hearts or fish frames work well for the cray fish with many anglers reporting them even grabbing their worms intended for the fish they are targeting, deep rocky areas with submerged timber are prime spots to target during the day with the shallow flats and weed beds of a night. here is new evidence of a breeding population of spotted-tailed quolls in Victoria, a species that experts thought might be functionally extinct in the state. And this evidence has implications for plans to re-introduce spottedtailed quolls into Kinglake. The Australian Quoll Conservancy (AQC) has captured a photograph of a one-year-old female spottedtailed quoll in East Gippsland. The female quoll was first caught on camera on 22 April 2021, and she consistently came back to the surveillance camera for the next few nights until all the lure was finally consumed. Solid evidence of a female is the ‘holy grail’ of

quoll finds as it indicates there is a breeding population in the area. “We found a female, so we’ve definitely got others in there because females do not move away from the area, unlike the males who wander. Somehow they’ve managed to survive. Now we need to work on reintroducing them to other areas if the species is to be saved,” AQC President Alberto Vale says. This exciting evidence has been a long time in the making. For the past three years, passionate volunteer and Victorian operations manager for the AQC, Dean Wilson, has travelled over 25,000 kilometres across East Gippsland seeking to find this elusive animal.
A spotted-tailed quoll photographed in Far North Queensland. Photo courtesy Australian Quoll Conservancy. After countless camera hours and over 300,000 camera images failing to yield any sign of the secretive animal, the images captured in April were cause for celebration. “It was very exciting. Mostly for Dean, who had done so much work for the last three years looking for them,” Alberto says. This find has spurred on the AQC in their quest to re-introduce spotted-tailed quolls to the Wallaby Creek Catchment area of Kinglake Ranges National Park where the species once flourished. “Now that we found a female quoll in East Gippsland, that is where we’d like to bring the quolls from for reintroduction because they’re living at the same altitude, so they will be perfect for Kinglake,” Alberto says.
Alberto also believes that re-introducing quolls into Kinglake Ranges National Park will benefit other species by removing feral cats. “We believe that the spotted-tailed quoll has capabilities of managing wild cat populations on their own. Up here in Far North Queensland, that has been our experience, there are no cats where stable quoll populations exist.” The next step in the Kinglake reintroduction project is to obtain animal ethics approval for genetic sampling of the newly found East Gippsland spotted-tailed quoll population. Understanding this population’s genetics will allow the AQC to identify individuals suitable to start a new population in Kinglake and ensure the East Gippsland population will not

suffer from having some of its members removed. Once this phase of the project gets the green light, the AQC will use non-invasive monitoring methods to assess the status of the species, looking at breeding, pouch young and juvenile distribution after the winter breeding season. Alberto believes that, with community support behind the project, it has every chance of succeeding and bringing spotted-tailed quolls back to the Murrindindi Shire. “We need the public support; we need community support. But after finding the female in Victoria, we can really start working on this project.” For more information on the Australian Quoll Conservancy or to report a quoll sighting, go to https://www.quolls.org.au/

wo birds in the bush may be worth more than one in the hand – or more than money in the
hand.
A study published late last year in Ecological Economics examined the link between biodiversity and life satisfaction. The study’s measure of biodiversity was based on avian species: how many different types of birds were found nearby and how this related to people’s happiness living in different
areas. Birds were chosen because they are often more easily seen or heard than other animals, especially in urban areas. The researchers also looked at other factors associated with life satisfaction, such as socioeconomic status. What the study found may be surprising to some, but not to others, depending on their fondness for birds. Avian diversity was as significant as income when it came to life satisfaction. While twitchers and bird lovers undoubtedly think it’s obvious that

more birds create more happiness, the exact nature of the link between birds and life satisfaction isn’t clear. It’s possible that the biodiversity birds represent contributes to wellbeing. Or perhaps it’s the fact that birds tend to be more abundant in natural settings – the positive effects of connecting with nature are now well established. Whatever underlies the relationship between birdlife abundance and happiness, this study brings a fresh perspective to the value of our feathered friends.

Above: Alexandra Secondary College students working on a series of ceramic mural panels. Below: The area before the ‘Windows into our Community’ project. To the left side of the pathway a garden landscape is framed by arches set into a timber screen that provides privacy and intimacy in the covered space. These arches replicate the archways of the building, carrying the historical context through into the courtyard and create symbolic references with arches representing a gateway or passageway to another place, a period of transition that can signify change and something to follow. Ahead of the viewer is a large circle also set into a screened frame with a view to the practical space beyond. The circle is representative of the CEACA facility, being a reflection of inclusiveness and equality for all, togetherness, sharing, completion, regeneration, connections and a focus point. The back of the courtyard area is both a practical work space and a relaxation zone. A hidden art installation in Alexandra created by many hands. Under the direction of Jeanette Jennings the ‘Windows into our Community’ project saw Work for the Dole participants and Alexandra Secondary College students produce a series of ceramic mural panels which were installed at the Old Courthouse in Alexandra. This was very much a community based project with Daryl Hedger responsible for the overall building and construction, Kim Pammer designed the landscape and Jeanette Jennings was responsible for the ceramic murals and visual work. The design takes into account the history of the beautiful and historic Court House building and leads the visitor along the side pathway into a more contemporary space. 50 – Murrindindi Guide – WINTER 2021
A timber deck provides a warm inviting aspect around which planters and green landscaping will be installed providing a lush backdrop to the courtyard. This corner of the courtyard then steps down into a practical space for outdoor work with large tables that will facilitate opportunities for project work and general craft sessions. Bordering the two levels is a curved wall with seating and planting. These lines in the landscaping connect with the inspiration for the overall framing of the area, being the mountains and hillsides of Alexandra. This links with the curved lines of the fencing structure. The inserts within this framework are ‘Windows into the Community’. These windows make symbolic references to the agriculture, the flora and fauna, the rivers and waterways, the logging industry, tourism and the Indigenous Australian perspective.

edona Estate has many reasons to celebrate this year. After a mild summer and long ripening season well into April, harvest 2021 is complete. Winemaker and winery owner Paul Evans is welcoming this year’s fruit quality. “After the tiny crop in 2020 it is great to see this year’s high quality and good yield across our red varieties in Murrindindi. Every growing season has its own challenges, and there are never two vintages exactly the same,” Paul says. In recent years, Paul’s and Sonja’s dedication
and passion for their land and wine business have reached new levels with the winemaker’s reserve range. “Reserve style wines are of exceptional quality and not every vintage delivers the fruit quality for these highend wines”, Paul says. The wines literally start their journey in the hand tendered vineyards. Selecting the best rows of each variety, dry growing (no irrigation) and some crop reduction are essential; the rest is up to Mother Nature. The hard work is paying off for Sedona Estate. Earlier this year, three of Sedona’s reds made the long-haul flight to
London. The wines arrived to be tasted and judged at the 2021 London Wine Competition. On the worldstage, Australian shiraz regularly steals the show! Sedona’s cool-climate reserve shiraz from vintage 2017 was amongst the Silver Medal Winners with only one point short of Gold! The winery’s 2018 reserve cabernet sauvignon joined the ranks with another Silver Award for Sedona Estate. The real winner for owners Paul and Sonja was their Italian wine sangiovese. It’s the wine that turned heads in the Australian wine industry since 2010 and boosted the reputation of

the tucked-away winery. The 2019 vintage is another one of those exceptional years for the estate-grown sangiovese. This wine ranked number four in its class competing with many Italian sangiovese wines. Paul and Sonja are immensely proud that their vineyard in Murrindindi produces fruit that competes on the world stage setting a new benchmark for their wines. “The most important seal of approval though comes from our loyal wine friends who trust the product and enjoy the experience of drinking a great wine made in our pristine region”, Sonja says.

Cindy and Gail at Rustic Simplicity & The Shear ‘N’ shedS. By Cindy Ferguson Wow! Nearly six months back open – time flies when you’re busy and having fun! Guess who’s also back open? At long last we’re together again. Cindy and Gail at Rustic Simplicity & The Shear ‘N’ shedS in Alexandra are now open 7 days a week. Gail, the Barber, is in on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Cindy is in on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, including public holidays and school holidays. It took Gail a little longer than she hoped to re-open, first health challenges, then some personal issues, and finally getting the Barber Shop’s COVID Safe Plan up and running took longer than anticipated. Once again,
thanks to everyone for your ongoing patience with all our predicaments. As said in the last issue, we are under no illusion that life will be going totally back to ‘normal’ any time soon, so no formal exhibitions are scheduled this year. Instead, we are featuring different makers by having a series of ad hoc exhibitions and displays. Like/follow us on our Social Pages @RusticSimplicity TheShearNshedS to get updates. In the meantime, check out our chooks! Quirky tea cosies, photographs, illustrations on paper and naturally dyed textiles by fibre artist Diana Liddelow; delightful Pebbles Rock renditions of roosters, chooks and chicks by Michelle Steenhuizen; and crocheted chooks, hatchling chicks and other critters by Hoot ‘n Nanny’s talented Beryl Smyrk.

Nelena Piu of Wintu. And with winter underway we’re well stocked with woollies – hand dyed and woven wool blend scarves, berets, vests and handbags by Erica Kenny and Dale Perkins; repurposed blanket bags, skirts and hoodies and hand knitted wool, wool blend and acrylic scarves (amongst many other things) by the talented Nelena Piu of Wintu – affectionately known as our resident ‘Bag Lady’! Nelena will visit as part of our ‘Meet the Maker’ program on Truck Show Day, the Sunday of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, 13 June and again for the Beanie Festival. We will have a street stall out the front of Rustic Simplicity on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 July. And speaking of beanies – if you need one before then – drop in!! See our ad page 52 for more information.
