PAGAN McCARTHY
Pagan’s latest work of art – this boat, ‘Overkill” has been airbrushed with flames and skulls.
Hotrods drive Pagan to airbrushing By Tammy Lovett CAPTURING a person’s story through the lines and creases of their face, or crafting a koala’s delicate fur are some of the many challenges for Yarck-based artist Pagan McCarthy. As a child sitting on the floor of her father’s workshop, watching him paint cars, Pagan first drew upon the inspiration that would lead to an artistic career. Pagan now has her own business specialising in airbrushing.
While Pagan says her creativeness came naturally, it was her family’s interest in cars and hotrods that really sparked her airbrushing passion. “Always as a kid I was drawing and painting. I’d sit in my room painting for hours,” she said. “Dad was a panel beater. I always used to watch him. I remember one time paint flew into my eye because I was too close.” Pagan began airbrushing eight years ago and has since transformed cars, boats and motorbikes with her artwork.

While her inspiration began in the automotive scene she now centres much of her work on canvas. The challenge of getting a realistic image quality is something Pagan enjoys, especially when it comes to airbrushing animals. “There are so many different creatures out there with different textures and hair features,” she said. “Trying to make a koala look fluffy is a fun challenge that, once I realise I’m getting right, the animal starts to come alive.” Pagan says she also loves creating black and white pieces. “When you take the colour out it creates more interest and emotion in the image,” she said. Samples of Pagan’s work.
One her favourite works is a black and white painting of a baby’s toes. “I can’t sell that one,” she said. “Artwork is all about passion and emotion, and this often makes it difficult to part with particular pieces,” Pagan said. “I sold an artwork a few weeks ago. I’d done it during a class and it had been sitting around for five years. It wasn’t until then I looked and remembered that time in my life. My emotions that go into it are completely different from what other people see,” she said. Pagan’s latest challenge has been creating a mural at Marysville Primary School. The piece took three weeks to finish and features Australian animals in a natural landscape. Being her first mural, the project took Pagan out of her comfort zone but gave her the freedom to express herself and her love of animals. “I was able to let out all my energy. The mural was a great release,” she said.

An exhibition of hilarious works of art AN exhibition of Robert Young’s truly delightful paintings will be held at Rennies at Acheron Gallery and Restaurant, 132 Breakaway Road, Acheron via Alexandra, from Saturday 18th May to Sunday 2nd June. Robert’s works are full of fun, life and activity. His extraordinary attention to
detail makes his paintings fascinating; the more you look into them the more you can see. There is much to think and laugh about in his paintings. He depicts people in whimsical circumstances and paints about the humorous and wry side of Australian life, working in either water colour or oil.

RUSTIC SIMPLICITY, ALEXANDRA
Rustic exhibitions over winter
Art and Soul: In the Beginning . . . …is a collection of reduction prints and etchings, charcoal and pencil sketches and oil pastel pieces from two local artists in Eildon. This debut exhibition showcases subject matter of ethereal beings, portraits, landscapes and abstract works. Both artists, Bec Carlisle and Lauren Powell, studied art in their youth and have since continued to experiment with different styles and mediums, drawing inspiration from the people in their lives and surroundings. They would like to invite you to view their work and their journey so far. Accompanying artist Mandi Renslow was born and bred in Gary, Indiana, the steel capital of America, where industry meets cornfields. Raised by a mother full of creativity and the passion to share, Mandi has been painting since she was a young teen. Andrew Chapman’s photo of local shearer Ted Hall.
Now living in Alexandra, but inspired by her American
roots, she has fused a series of works in oil painting and collage of famous 50’s legends, with an abstract twist. On Sunday 19th May, Bec Carlisle will run a printmaking workshop, offering a demonstration and instruction using both linoleum and wood. During the course of the workshop, participants will carve out an image and create a print using their own image that they have carved into the lino or the wood. Bookings essential. ‘Art and Soul’ is showing until 5pm Monday 27th May. The ART of TRAnsport This group exhibition of local and Victorian artists is based on the very loose theme of transport (to coincide with the Truck Ute and Rod Show held in Alexandra on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Contributing artists are encouraged to be either literal, or if they like, quite lateral in their thinking on their definition of transport! ‘The ART of TRAnsport’

The Final Clip – Images of our disappearing wool industry Opening with drinks and nibbles from 6pm on Friday 5th July, this solo exhibition is by Andrew Chapman (whose interest in shearing began in 1976). It will feature local and iconic images of the people and the places that star in the stories surrounding this significant aspect of our local agricultural heritage and current day rural way of life for many working on the land. Since the mid-70s, Andrew has travelled the country documenting the sheds and the shearers who inhabit them. In November 2006,
Andrew published his first book, The Shearers. The second, Woolsheds, was published in October 2011, and the third companion book in this series, Around The Sheds, was released in October 2012. Andrew has retained a love of photojournalism and documentary black and white photography since studying photography in the 70s and working as a newspaper photographer in the 70s and 80s. With a passion for documenting rural lifestyles, and especially rural workers, Andrew continues to create portraits and landscapes for his own personal pleasure, and in his work as a freelance photographer. Since the mid80s, Andrew has worked on numerous assignments for major Australian magazines
Cherry Pixie by Lauren Powell, left, Loves Lucy’.. and newspapers, with more than a dozen Time covers and headline stories to his credit. QUILT SHOW ON SUNDAY 9TH JUNE
Alexandra Quilters show off their work by Denise Fiddes IT is twenty nine years now since a very talented local lady by the name Shirley Hibbert held patchwork classes at the local adult education centre. I wonder if she knew then, that nearly thirty years later, her inspiration is still strong and flourishing in Alexandra. Friendships forged then are still alive today, and the group has grown into an incorporated body of fifty folk, some travelling many miles to enjoy the creative camaraderie which abounds. We are a not for profit friendship group that comes together to share the joy of patchwork and quilting on the first Saturday and third Monday night of every month. For a small joining fee our ladies enjoy membership with Victorian Quilters Inc, the use of an extensive library, organised activities such as retreats and trips, and participation in friendship rounds whereby we help each other to piece together a quilt learning new techniques as we go. Membership also gives the opportunity to join our craft and chatter group on the third and fourth

Show success . . .
The yearly display of our work will be held in the Alexandra shire hall on 9th June, from 10am to 4pm, in conjunction with the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show. 2013 is an exciting year for us as we move our display into the shire hall. This large space will enable us to display the quilts in their best light and gives us the potential to extend the show. There are many quilters living within the Shire of Murrindindi who have not had a venue to display their work. This year Alexandra Quilters extend an invitation to them to enter their work into the ‘open’ section of the show, giving them a chance to see their work on display. For the first time creators will be permitted to sell their quilts and the public will be given the opportunity to vote for their choice of ‘best of show’. The proceeds from our quilt exhibition will be donated to a local charity. This continues our tradition of also donating a quilt to the same local charity to be used as a fund raiser. We welcome you to come and see our display. Entrance is $2 with children under fourteen free. For any further information about the quilt show contact convenors Jill on 5774 7091 or Nancy on 5774 7152. For general enquiries contact president Thelma on 5774 2641 or secretary Denise on 5772 2183.

A ginger brew . . .
DAWNIE GINGER BEER
Don’t be ginger about this brew
THERE’S a rich family history that’s gone into brewing a new ginger beer now on the market. Quizzical hints abound on the label – a red cat with a pirate’s patch appears neither evil nor mischievous, but possibly both, and the question is posed: “Do you like cats? Me neither.” Truth is, it’s a caricature of a slightly horrid but notable, one-eyed ginger feline once owned by the woman who provided the inspiration and the name for Dawnie Ginger beer, developed by Joanna Stubbings of Flowerdale. Joanna’s grandmother, Dawn Stubbings, who lives just up the road, is the family’s “ginger matriarch”. For years she’s brewed up a ginger beer that refreshes, quenches and cheers her big brood of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and their entourages. With a degree in food/ consumer science from RMIT, Joanna somehow strayed to traineeship with federal government and to Mitchell Shire as youth resources officer before realising her passion. With the help of her father Ric, mother Sal Phillips, and brothers, Bill and Edward, her brewed alcoholic ginger beer has just hit the market,
Cheers Joanna! but not before she’d done thorough testing on all the family and many friends. Her friend Brittany Kilsby, from Kinglake, produced the illustrations for the basis of the label. “We wanted it to be a family business and we wanted it to be focussed on where we’ve come from,” Joanna said. It was an in-depth process – finding the right ingredients from independent producers, blending the ginger with lemon and lime to get the right balance between the earthy ginger and sweet flavours.
Then it had to be stabilized, blended and carbonated to produce a palatable and consistent result – one that wouldn’t explode, as more amateur brewers would confirm as a dire occupational hazard. To add to her skills and knowledge, Joanna completed a short course in wine making and says that while the process of making ginger beer is more like brewing beer, understanding the wine making process was really helpful. “Our priority was to have something that tastes great.
We wanted it to be the best tasting ginger beer, using independent producers.” Dawnie Ginger Beer was officially launched on April 7 at Gallery 34 at 34 High Street, Yea in a special event entitled “Craft Ginger Beer meets Art”. Gallery 34 is among the first local stockists of Dawnie Ginger Beer. It’s also on offer at The Flowerdale Hotel and Wallders Café in Kilmore. LAZY RIVER CAFE, MARYSVILLE
By Georgina Beach
OVER thirty years ago, in a fine French restaurant in inner Melbourne, the young Michael Jaeger completed his apprenticeship as a chef. Since then, he has prepared exquisite food in a wealth of settings, from the illustrious Metro Nightclub to the launch of The Man From Snowy River. And, just like the movie, Michael chose the mountains over life upon the flat: the nineties saw him divide most of his time between the Dandenongs and Marysville – until 2003, when he settled on a small property in Narbethong, working at Stonelea and then the Cumberland. In 2009, Black Saturday signalled the time for Michael to go it alone. Initially in a marquee on the old Cumberland site, and then in Marysville’s shiny new shopping centre: ‘My Chef, Mike’ swiftly took shape as a busy catering and take-away business, feeding the stream of workers clearing and rebuilding Marysville. He also catered for cheery
events such as the opening of the new Narbethong Hall and the launch of the local Steelpan band’s first CD, entitled ‘Recovery’. Following the shopping centre’s change of ownership mid last year, Michael’s growing business was re-branded the ‘Lazy River Cafe’ – in honour of the Steavensons River passing the door – and heralding a change towards ‘slower paced’ cuisine.

Comfortable outdoor seating encourages patrons to relax on the riverbank... whilst the indoor tables are surrounded by a gallery of glorious works by local wildlife and landscape photographer, Donovan Wilson. Whilst the threat of riots in the street prevented Michael from deleting his famous woodfired pizzas from the menu, the other take-away options are no more. Instead, a new list of delectable, a-lacarte delights showcases his traditional cooking methods, where every meal is made by hand, from scratch, on the spot. From wood-fired pork belly to vegetarian calzone, gluten-free fritters to
crumbed calamari – there is something to suit every taste and dietary requirement. As for dessert, well . . . if Mike’s memorable homemade icecream sundaes don’t slow you down, the array of freshly baked cakes and other goodies certainly will! Meanwhile, the catering side of the business enjoys a roaring trade. With packages tailored to accommodate every budget, Michael regularly caters the local sporting and community club events; and has become the first choice amongst discerning brides planning their spring weddings. All that aside, the secret most closely kept is Michael’s bread. Flavoured according to the day’s fancy, these handmade sourdoughs are coveted by regular

Birds . . .
OF THE MURRINDINDI SHIRE
Watching birds part 2 By Bob Tate ANOTHER area I favour close to Alexandra is the Old Fawcett Road bushland and rail trail. From Alexandra travel towards Yea for 2 kilometres where there is a K sign; take the one marked Old Fawcett Road for 2 kilometres to the rail trail car park. The bushland here is called the Fawcett bushland and well worth a walk around. We once saw a pink robin in this area. From here the rail trail goes to the left and right and both are good for birds. In the section that goes towards Alexandra the very rare, for this district, hooded robin has been seen on a number of occasions and on one visit I observed over 20 species of birds in this short walk.
56 High Street Yea
Drive on over the hill to a set of cattle yards and park again here and walk along the road. There are dams, roadside trees and paddocks of red gums all with birds aplenty. After returning to the car either drive to the end of this road to Spring Creek Road or return to Alexandra. However a round trip can be made if you turn left at the end into Spring Creek Road and then return via the Goulburn Valley Highway. Birds of Alexandra – the New Holland honeyeater There are several species of honeyeater which come into our gardens in Alexandra. The New Holland honeyeater is one of them and, whilst it also frequents the bush, it is more common in the garden. There are many other honeyeaters in the district,

Both sexes are similar but the juvenile is a dull brown in the areas where it will later turn black. Its range extends from around Gympie in Queensland in a narrow band down the east and south coast to the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. There is also another population in the south west of Western Australia. This is one bird that enjoys native gardens and will feed on insects and the nectar of banksias, grevilleas and eucalypts. They can be observed standing on the large flowers of the former two, thrusting their bill into the individual flowers collecting the nectar.

They are one of many birds that can catch insects when in flight and will hold several insects ‘in line’ before flying off to feed their young. We have a largely native garden and have had two pairs nesting successfully over the last couple of years, in bushes only about a metre from the ground. They usually nest higher. They have several calls, with the more common being very harsh and scolding. This honeyeater is very dominant and will usually push out all other small honeyeaters – but they meet their match with the wattle bird.

Goulburn Fishing Festival 6th and 7th September 2013 WITH last year’s festival being such a huge success, we are looking forward to a bigger and better event this year. Over 600 visitors and locals enjoyed a wide variety of activities last September. Almost everything related to fresh water angling was displayed and discussed, not to mention the giveaways and prizes.
This year’s event is on the weekend after Father’s Day when the rivers reopen, and will also have new season specials only available at the festival over the weekend. A big hit was our chef Peter with his demonstrations and tastings, the tour of the hatchery on Saturday also proved

Something Eildon fishing report
By Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle THE summer months on the lake certainly sent the trout down deep, while the cod, yellow belly and redfin were well on the go. Redfin up to 50cm have been

taken on yabbies, bobbers and worms from one end of the lake to the other. Rocky outcrops and trees were the areas to target, but during the winter months they are starting to congregate around the grassy flats, and river or creek run offs. Yellowbelly are taking stump jumper lures and spinner baits, but are also chasing small reddies and soft plastic redfin look-a-likes. A couple of 60cm plus cod were landed on, of all things, chicken fillets. Trout are on the go again being caught on the old favorites, Tassie Devils in pink/red/frog pattern and yellow wings. They are also being caught on stump jumpers with similar colours, and near the Alliance boat ramp, power bait is worth a shot.
The pondage has been a little on the slow side but it has still been receiving a stocking or two from Snobs Creek Hatchery. A total of 200 rainbow trout and 200 brown trout were released prior to Easter, with many happy anglers picking them up on local dough and power bait. The big news was obviously the near on 13 pounder that Nick Taylor caught on a Rapala, which just goes to show there’re still a few elusive thumpers in there. Irrigation is due to ease within the first two weeks of May and should create a steady flow, and hopefully give a little consistency to the fishing. Most anglers chasing trout have had the best results on Rapalas, scrubbies and celta type lures. Down towards Molesworth,
cod and yellowbelly are being caught on stump jumpers and spinner baits. Up towards Big River using scrubbies and bladed lures to target rainbow and brown trout will prove successful. The most interesting story that I have heard for a while is about our fresh water jelly fish that have been sighted again in the lake. No it’s not an April fool’s joke! There are two different types found in Australia and apparently the conditions in Lake Eildon have been just right for these little guys to fire up. They are only active for a very short period and remain dormant for years at a time. The size of a twenty cent piece, they are easily mistaken for a small piece of plastic, so there you go. Until next issue catch you later.

THE sixth annual Foundation Technologies Junior and Women’s Cycling Tour, organised by the Blackburn Cycling Club, and run on behalf of Cycling Victoria, is scheduled again for this year on the 13th and 14th July in Eildon. The event has now been extended to include a full women’s series, which is a key to women increasing their involvement in cycling in Victoria. The Junior Tour has grown from strength to strength, with strong support from local businesses including Outdoor Education Group, Golden Trout Motel, Eildon Parkview Motor Inn, Rubicon Hotel Motel, Thornton Caravan Park and Blue Gums Riverside Holiday Park. With an expectation of over 150 junior cyclists, along with over 80 volunteers undertaking roles from traffic control (for the safety of riders and motorists), to first aid officers, plus the support of the families of the riders, the tour is expected to attract over 700 visitors for the weekend.
This is a great boost for the region in what is traditionally a quieter period. The carnival-like atmosphere of the tour kicks off with a time trial. Individual riders compete against the clock on the Back Eildon Road on the Saturday morning, followed by a road race in the afternoon. The finish on the dam wall, which all the cyclists enjoy, has become an iconic part of the event. The final event will be held on Sunday. This is another road race with the finish in Riverside Drive followed by presentations to all the winners. “Eildon region in July provides challenging courses against a stunning backdrop of lush mountains and waterways. We run approximately 25 events across a range of age groups, receiving a lot of positive feedback from riders, parents and officials who love participating in the Eildon Junior and Women’s tour,” race director David Gallagher said.

school aged children. It provides a fun, friendly environment where children can become involved in tennis, emulate their favourite stars and make new friends from within their community. Currently there are 65 local children, enrolled in the program at Yea Tennis Club and Alexandra Lawn Tennis
Club, who are having an absolute ball developing their tennis skills, and most of all having fun with their friends. MLC Hot Shots Tennis uses low-compression red, orange and green tennis balls, smaller racquets and courts, and is designed to get children playing the game and having fun from their very first session. Former world number eight, and Australian favourite, Alicia Molik has thrown her support behind the program. “One of the most important things for kids is trying new sports and having fun right from the word go,” Alicia said. “The MLC Hot Shots Tennis program lets kids learn the sport quickly and easily, build their confidence
and also gets them active through playing sport. “Using the modified equipment makes it easier for beginners to start playing the game, and it is a great way to introduce kids to tennis. “I wish MLC Hot Shots Tennis was around when I was starting out, and I have no doubt it will help inspire our tennis stars of the future.” The program is recommended as the ideal development pathway by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). It enables children who are not yet able to play tennis on a full-sized court to play against others at a similar standard while, learning new skills and developing good technique. Rachel is very excited about the launch of the program

Permaculture . . . By Emily Friedel and Rohan Dodds
THE concept of Permaculture does not seem to be a fixed one. The ideas can be mutable and free to evolve as they will (or as best works for us), ever enlarging the system as a whole and drawing more under its umbrella as we continue into the practice of a more integrated way of living within our surroundings. This being the case, it made sense that we would bring bees into the mix! Bees have quickly become a consuming passion of ours, and such adoration seems to be the rule with most hobbyist beekeepers rather than the exception. Once these little critters enter your world and you begin to become more
aware of their presence, their behaviour, idiosyncrasies, and their incontestable importance to our current ways of eating (and much more) on this planet, it may be very hard not to be enamoured and constantly amazed by them. They say the bees choose you. In our case this seems to have been true – as soon as we contacted Emily’s Uncle Martin expressing our interest in getting a hive he said he’d found a swarm in a nearby suburban park that was in need of a good home. It must have been fate. Well, these bees that chose us also seem to like a little drama! On the drive home from Melbourne, with the hive in the back seat of the ute, bees started emerging from a crack they’d found between the entrance and
PART 3 ~ WHY NOT ADD BEES? the strip of wood that had been nailed in front of it to prevent precisely this issue. Somewhat concerned, but forcing ourselves to remain calm, we pulled into the nearest service station and made a slightly panicked call to Martin. He just had a chuckle and said to try to herd them back in if possible and block up the crack with whatever we could find, being night time they were unlikely to fly away from the hive unless they saw light. Once the bees had settled in to their new home in the country we began to open up the hive every week or two in order to learn about the goings on inside. We identified different castes of bee (even finding the queen sometimes), distinguished brood from capped honey and saw baby
bees eat their way out of cells. Getting to witness bees at work in their home is both fascinating and exhilarating. We were doing quite well, and felt we were becoming more adept at hive manipulations – even discarding the gloves and working with bare hands. Then one day we noticed the brood comb looked different, it was patchier than it had been and there were some cells with unusually high, extruded cappings (bees are meticulous and ordered so these anomalies stood out even to our novice eyes). In the same visit we noticed a very suspicious looking beetle darting in and out of cells, being chased frantically by a bee. Like fretful new parents, we headed straight for books and Google after the hive

visit. We researched madly trying to find out what could be wrong with our beloved bees. It turned out that the beetle was a dastardly Small Hive Beetle, a pest that entered Australia in 2002 and has caused huge problems, completely destroying countless colonies as it has worked its way down the east coast. The strange brood comb seemed to indicate a failing queen. The two issues together could spell disaster, as a failing queen could mean a colony more vulnerable to a Small Hive Beetle attack. Immediate action was necessary! We ordered traps to control the Small Hive Beetle – that was the simpler of the two problems to address. Under normal circumstances, bees will replace their queen when they sense she isn’t doing her job properly any more. So, we had to determine if they were already doing that (they build a special type of cell to raise a new queen) or if they had eggs available to raise a new queen in the near future. They had built a cell to raise a new queen, but they must have done it after the old queen had stopped laying and there was no egg in it and no eggs available in the hive. The only way for us to fix our queen problem was to get a new queen and perform a manual replacement. We ordered a new queen (they come in the mail!), named her Queenie and went through the process of removing the old queen and introducing the new queen. Requeening does not always work, and sometimes the bees will reject the new queen, leaving you with a queenless colony which will inevitably perish unless you
Industrious workers. repeat the process until they do accept a new leader. This is quite daunting for the inexperienced beekeeper as their actions, the way they introduce the new queen and what they do afterwards can all affect queen acceptance – it’s a lot of pressure! Thankfully, our requeening mission (carried out with precise plans, contingency plans and written instructions like a military operation) was a success! Twelve days later after introducing Queenie we inspected the hive and found evidence that she was laying eggs. Our delight, and relief, that we had managed to save the colony is a testament to just how attached we have become to our bees. We think beekeeping will remain a part of our lives for a long time to come. And it is a hobby we would highly recommend to others.

Gardening . . . Winter gardens By Sandy Burden Misty Valley Nursery IT’S mid-year and the chill of winter is in the air, soaking rains, some hail storms, and frosts to greet the morning light, while the soils cool blanket still envelopes the roots of sleeping deciduous trees. We are blessed in this region to be able to grow some wonderful cool climate fruits and berries. If yours is a small garden then miniature fruit trees like the ‘Trixzie®’ range or the ‘Ballerina®’ apple trees will allow for variety in dwarf form. Espalier on fence or trellis helps utilize limited space and you and your family can enjoy apples, plums, pears and much more.
If space is not an issue then regular fruit trees should suit. All fruit trees are best with pruning and they don’t need to grow taller than you want to reach for the reward of your own delicious fresh fruit. Apples need to cross pollinate between two compatible varieties as do pears and plums and they will produce wonderful crops in summer to autumn.
Pink Lady fruits best with Delicious or Granny Smith or Gala or Fuji. Snow Apple with Cox’s Orange Pippin or Jonathon or Granny Smith. Red Fuji with Golden Delicious or Jonathon or Lady William or Granny Smith.
The following plants fruit best together.
Apples: a fruit to keep long after picking and so good for you.
Pears: great to eat fresh or cook. Varieties to grow together are Beurre Bosc with Williams. Red Sensation with Williams or Beurre Bosc / Packhams with Winter Nells or Josephine.
Plums: Satsuma grow well together with Mariposa or Santa Rosa or Plumcot. Angelina with King Billy or Green Gage or Coes Golden Drop or Damson. Self fertile fruit trees include apricots, peaches, nectarines, persimmon, pomegranates and quince. Berries: blueberries, loganberries, currants and elderberries are easy to grow. Well that takes care of some of our produce, so lets turn our thoughts to the ornamental garden.

One of my favourite plants is the camellia – one of the toughest and most resilient shrubs you can plant. With glossy deep green leaves all year, the flowers give magnificent displays of colour from whites to pinks to deep reds. They love an acid, humus rich soil, so lime and poultry manures should be avoided and once established they are hardy and cope with dry conditions. Camellia Sasanqua is a vigorous growing camellia. Many have fragrant flowers and bloom from late autumn to late winter, thriving in varied positions from full sun to part shade. Sasanquas are a most adaptable hedge plant.

The most popular and well known is the Camellia Japonica. It has larger leaves than the Sasanqua and along with the hybrid varieties gives a wonderful floral display
over winter. There are five main bloom types: single, semi double, double, informal double and formal double. This may sound technical but what it really means is that camellia flowers offer a wide variety of shapes enough to suit any gardener, from the single layered flower with stamens showing in a bright inner circle, to the formal double with rose-like petals. These smart plants even provide their own mulch as the flowers drop, they not only look like a carpet of petals but improve the soil as they break down. Some camellias only grow to small bushes others to large shrubs and flowers can be miniature to larger than the palm of your hand. These plants are suitable for growing in tubs as well as in the garden. Winter is a great time to plant fruit trees and to choose your camellias in flower. I hope you enjoy your winter and happy gardening.
Falls . . .
Murrindindi Shire is a great place to enjoy an escape to tumbling waterfalls and lush ferny gullies. Above: Phantom Falls – a steep but rewarding 1.6km return walk takes you up from the Taggerty River Valley to the falls above. A stunning clear view down to the river below the lookout, allows you to see the path of river from the falls. Melting snow and heavy rain tumbling over the falls in spring bring the valley to life.

ALEXANDRA & DISTRICT SPEEDWAY
Alexandra speedway – a great place to race SPECTACULAR action is regularly delivered at Alexandra and District Speedway, with the dirttrack cowboys and girls and juniors providing entertainment that thrills the younguns, the oldies and everyone in between. Whilst multiple layers of clothing are required for spectators during the colder months, there is nothing better than sitting by your firepot, cooking a barbecue and watching all the action under lights. For those just
looking for a night out, facilities at the track include a canteen and children’s playground, so you can bring as little or as much as you like.
100 lapper
Throughout the year Alexandra Speedway runs a calendar of events between October and June featuring club classes competing for points. These classes include 1200 Juniors, Standard Saloons, Vic Sports Sedans, Open Sedans and Ladies Open with feature visiting classes in the fixture to keep things interesting.
Once a year thousands of spectators, drivers and crew from all around Australia converge on Alexandra for the infamous event. Held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June, Alexandra Speedway really comes into its own with the unique format of open class speedway racing on a dog leg circuit.
The highlight of the racing season, dubbed the Bathurst of Speedway, is the annual 100 lapper event.
The event is different from normal forms of oval speedway, instead of racing in a circular motion around the track, sharp turns have to be made through the dog leg circuit. Up to 100 cars can enter the event, with only the top 40 qualifying cars making the final. Watching 40 cars race 100 laps over 1.5 hours is electrifying. Be warned, spectators adrenalin races almost as hard as the drivers. Open to all classes of speedway sedans, racing
