BIOGRAPHY
Frances Dennis is an artist born and educated in Perth, Western Australia. She has lived all her life there, makes art from her home studio there, as well as the Robertson Park Artists Studio. “From the beginning, I’ve been inspired by JMW Turner’s masterful, shimmering atmospheric landscapes of the late 19th century wherein the experience of being in a landscape was master over the literal depiction of a scene or view. Following Turner’s ideal I resist being categorised as a straightforward, topographical landscape artist. Intentionally creating images which are not exact representations suggests the already existing and in so doing I can exploit the magical painting process and the viewer is free to reflect rather than simply recognise.” She believes strongly in her art being attached to a branch of the art history tree and thus her practice is informed by art history, as well as historical and contemporary research across many painting mediums. Her enthusiasm and inspiration comes from not only exploring their traditional uses and resultant characteristics, but also delving into them with frequent experimentation in order to expand her visual language. While Dennis primarily considers herself a painter attached to the landscape tradition, she also makes small figurative sculptures in paperclay. “My sculptures are created in a similar way in that during the working process, memories are triggered, grabbed and made concrete. As in the paintings, what is manifest is more important than any literal surface likeness.” Frances has exhibited in many group exhibitions, has won a sculptural as well as painting prizes, the latest of which was winning an exhibition at the Chianciano Art Expo in Chianciano Terme, Tuscany, Italy in 2017. Her artwork is in private collections in Australia as well as overseas and although she no longer teaches, Frances takes great pleasure in ‘talking paint’ with any one who will oblige.
