Willkommen zur finalen mushroom Trilogie! Wer nach der Ankündigung der Einstellung des gedruckten Magazines im Sommer gedacht hätte, uns gibt es nicht mehr, der hat's leider nicht verstanden, denn jetzt geht es noch einmal richtig los. Mit dieser Winterausgabe starten wir nun in die finale mushroom Trilogie! Auch wenn viele das schade finden, bis Mai 2019 sind es (dieses Heft eingerechnet) noch genau 3 gedruckte Magazine. Diese werden aber sehr besonders! In dieser Ausgabe widmen wir uns der Geschichte vom Goatrance und Chill Out, Anfang März schauen wir auf die Progressive Genres und als fulminanter Abschluss wird in der finalen Ausgabe am 30. Mai zum 25. Jubiläumstag des mushroom magazines Psytrance mit seinen Unterspielarten das große Thema sein. In den letzten drei mushroom-Ausgaben möchten wir auch unseren Supportern noch einmal die Möglichkeit geben, im Heft dabei zu sein, bevor im Mai 2019 die Druckmaschinen angehalten werden. Es heißt also glücklicherweise noch ein paar mal mehr: „mushroom magazine is

worlds leading magazine for Psytrance music & culture, available printed and online.“, bevor wir uns nach einem Viertel Jahrhundert vor der Bühne der gedruckten Musikmagazine verabschieden werden. Über das wieso und warum hatten wir dich ja bereits in der Sommerausgabe aufgeklärt. Mit unserem Abgang nach dem letzten Tanz im Festivalsommer 2019 sind wir aber leider auch nicht allein, denn es gibt kaum noch unabhängige gedruckte Musikmagazine und Untergrundhefte, die sich finanziell über Wasser halten können. Deswegen saufen viele einfach ab. Wir bleiben dir jedoch mit Ansage noch für die drei aufeinanderfolgenden gedruckten Sonderausgaben erhalten, um dann in frische Gewässer zu wechseln. Wir setzen die Segel und nehmen dich mit. Unsere Zukunft wird – wie sollte es anders sein – digital und ist bereits seit langer Zeit vorbereitet. Welcome to the final mushroom trilogy! With this mushroom magazine winter edition will mark the start into the final mushroom trilogy! Even if many people think that's a shame, there are still exactly 3 printed magazines to come until May 2019 (including this issue). And these issues are going to be very damn special! We decided to dedicate the first issue to the history of Goatrance and Chill Out, at the beginning of March we will have a closer look at the progressive genres and for a glorious ending we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of mushroom magazine with the final issue on May 30th. In this last and final episode, Psytrance and all of its various sub-genres will be the major topic. With the last three mushroom issues, we would also like to give our supporters the opportunity to be part of the magazine before the printing press will be stopped

in May 2019. So luckily we will be able to restate a couple more times: "Mushroom magazine is worlds leading magazine for Psytrance music & culture, available printed and online", before we will say goodbye after having played a quarter of a century on the stage of the printed music magazines. We already explained the whys and wherefores in the summer issue 2018. However, we're not alone with our parting after celebrating the last dance during the 2019 festival season. There are hardly any more independent printed music magazines and underground magazines left that can survive financially. That's why many of them just sink and drown. But we will stay with you and have an announcement to make: After the three following printed special editions we will change to new waters. We set the sails

and take you along. Our future is – how could it be any different – digitized and already has been prepared for a good while. This means that the mushroom-magazine.com website will definitely remain – in an even better version. We are also in the process of working out other projects that yet have been classified as " Top Secret ". Kick-off der europäischen Festival-Saison mit dem Festival of Smiles

Von der kleinen Party zum internationalen Event: Seit 14 Jahren vereint das Psy Experience Festival Gäste zum Sommeranfang mit Sound, Vision und Magie. Veranstalter Rene Lauckner (Laugi) verrät, wie es dazu kam. Es begann vor 14 Jahren einmal mit 300 tanzenden Freaks im Regen. Heute ist das Psychedelic Experience Festival mit 6000 Besuchern aus rund 50 Ländern eines der angesagtesten Psytrance Festivals in Norddeutschland. Das Event lockt als Start der europäischen Festival-Saison wieder vom 30. Mai bis zum 2. Juni 2019 psychedelische Wanderer zur gemeinsamen Reise. Der Weg der Psychedelic Experience Crew war allerdings nicht immer gerade und trocken. Laugi erinnert sich an die Anfänge, als er als 20-Jähriger 2004 zur ersten Psychedelic Experience lud: „Da ging es für die DJs noch nicht mit Laptop auf die Bühne. Da wurden Tastaturen

und große Monitore geschleppt. Dass ein Live-Act aus technischen Gründen auch mal abgebrochen werden musste, war keine Seltenheit.“ Zu der Zeit war das Psychedelic Experience Open Air nur eine einzige Partynacht. Neelix, der gerade sein erstes Album herausgebracht hatte, legte dort inmitten selbstgebastelter Deko auf.

„Der familiäre Vibe trägt das Festival“ Über die Entwicklung des Psychedelic Experience Festivals sagt Laugi: „Als ich anfing, war ich noch so richtig schön grün hinter den Ohren.“ So habe man ihm zum Beispiel einmal einen Getränkewagen ausgeraubt. Aus jugendlichem Leichtsinn und eigener Dummheit seien Probleme entstanden. „Mit dem Alter kam die Weisheit,“ so Laugi. „Und es hat viele Jahre gedauert bis ich das Team zusammen hatte, auf das ich bauen kann. Dieser familiäre Vibe in der Crew ist extrem wichtig für das Festival.“

Outsiders, Ritmo, Perfectone, Liquid Soul, Rinkadink und weitere top DJs mit dabei. Das neue Decokonzept soll visuelle Grenzen ausdehnen und die internationale Shop-Meile Überraschungen bieten. Laugi ist seit seiner Jugend in der Psy-Szene unterwegs, machte sich auch als DJ Natron einen Namen. „Psytrance-Culture gehört zu meinem Leben. Das Schöne ist: Herkunft, Beruf, Alter, Religion sind total egal. Psytrance vereint alle. Das

Als emotionalsten Punkt in der Psychedelic-Experience-Geschichte nennt der Veranstalter das Festival 2013: „Wir sind komplett abgesoffen im Regen. Trecker mussten bereits während des Aufbaus festgefahrene Fahrzeuge vom Gelände ziehen. Wir alle haben Strohballen geschleppt. Die Gäste haben sich von dem Dauerregen nicht beeinflussen lassen und von den Emotionen her war es eine unvergessliche Erfahrung. Es hat uns als Team den absoluten Kick gegeben.“

2019 mit dabei: Astrix, Vini Vici und Captain Hook Seit vielen Jahren ist Laugi mit dem Psychedelic Experience Festival in der Psytrance Szene fest verankert. Der 35-Jährige ist dazu Label Manager bei Solartech Records. Mit Solartech Event werden regelmäßig die bekannten Indoor Events „Intact Expanda“ und „Midnight Sun“ in Hamburg veranstaltet. Für die Gäste will die Psychedelic Experience Crew immer wieder neue Festival-Höhepunkte schaffen. „Wir möchten jedes Jahr einen drauf setzen bei Deko, Licht, Sound und Line up“, sagt Laugi. So sind 2019 Atmos, Sonic Species, Mandragora,

ist auch in meiner Festivalpolitik ganz wichtig. Solange alles friedlich ist und alle ein Lächeln auf den Lippen haben, bin ich glücklich. Toleranz zeichnet unsere Szene aus. Der Spirit entsteht durch Achtsamkeit und das Miteinander. “Zudem spendet das Festival regelmäßig an regionale Einrichtungen für Kids. Wünsche für die Zukunft? Für Laugi eine klare Sache: Internationale Freaks weiterhin auf einem großen Dancefloor vereinen. Psychedelic Experience Festival from 30th of May till the 2nd of June in Lübz/Germany The Festival of smiles kicks off the European festival season It started as a small party and has turned into an international event: The Psychedelic Experience Festival unites people to celebrate the start of the summer with sound, vision and magic. The organizer Rene Lauckner (Laugi) reveals the whole story. It started 14 years ago with 300 freaks dancing in the rain. Today, the Psychedelic Experience Festival has turned into one of the most popular psytrance festivals in Northern Germany attracting around 6000 visitors from about 50 countries. As the kick-off of the European festival season, the event wants to invite all psychedelic travellers from the 30th of May till the 2nd of June 2019 to a common journey. For sure, things didn’t always run just smoothly for the Psychedelic Experience crew. Laugi remembers the beginnings of the festival in 2004. He was 20 years old, when he brought the first Psychedelic Experience into life: “It wasn’t as easy as today, where DJs just hop on the stage with their laptops. Instead, keyboards and big monitors had to be carried. Moreover, it was not uncommon, that a live act had to finish a gig early because of technical problems.“ Back then, the Psychedelic Experience Open Air wasn’t more than a single party night. Neelix, whose first album had just been released, was DJing there in between self-made decoration. “The family vibe is important for the festival” Laugi says about the development of the Psychedelic Experience Festival:

“I was still wet behind my ears, when I started. “Once, all drinks out of one of his beverage carts got robbed. Also, his juvenility and own stupidity caused problems as he says. “Wisdom came with age“, he knows today. “And it took some years to build a team, that I can completely rely on. This family vibe is extremely important for the festival.” The organizer refers to the year 2013 as the most emotional moment in the history of the Psychedelic Experience Festival: “We drowned in the rain. Tractors had to pull deadlocked cars from the festival grounds already during the preparations of the event. We all had to carry straw bales. But the guests didn’t let the continuous rain keep them off from partying. In terms of emotions, it was unforgettable. For us as a team, it was the ultimate experience.“

2019 on the line up: Astrix, Vini Vici and Captain Hook For many years, Laugi and the Psychedelic Experience Festival have now been deeply rooted in the psytrance scene. Moreover, the 35-year-old organizer is Label Manager at Solartech Records. Solartech Events also regularly organizes the well-known indoor events “Intact Expanda“ and “Midnight Sun“ in Hamburg. Continuously, the Psychedelic Experience Crew wants to create new festival highlights for their guests. “Every year, we want to go the extra mile in terms of decoration, light, sound and line up“, says Laugi. So, in 2019, you can read names on the line up like for example Atmos, Sonic Species, Mandragora, Outsiders, Ritmo, Perfectone, Liquid Soul, Rinkadink and many more. With a new concept of decoration, visual limits are supposed to get expanded. The international shop streets will offer surprises.

Laugi, also known as DJ Natron, has been part of the psytrance scene since his teenage years. “Psytrance culture is part of my life. What I like about it: Background, profession, age, religion don’t matter. Psytrance unites all people. That is also an important part of my festival politics. As long as everything runs peacefully and everyone smiles, I am happy. Our scene is characterized by tolerance. The spirit originates in awareness and a feeling of being together.“ Moreover, regional projects for kids receive regular donations from the festival. Any wishes for the future? One sure thing for Laugi is to continue uniting international freaks on one big dancefloor. Goa Trance und dann zu

Psytrance wurde

Drei Buchstaben: Mehr braucht es nicht, um eine Schublade zu öffnen. Eine Schublade, in der ein kunterbuntes Meer aus Assoziationen wogt, womöglich sogar ein außerirdischer Bewusstseinszustand. Goa. Wir sehen Fluorfarben in der Nacht, wir sehen Dreadlocks im staubigen Sonnenlicht. Wir riechen Nag Champa, Chai Tee und starke Kräuter. Und wir hören eine ganz bestimmte Art von Musik.

Wo alles anfing Hand hoch: Wer weiß, woher der Name Goa kommt? Genau: Goa ist der Name eines indischen Bundesstaats, der an der Westküste des Landes gelegen ist. Seine palmengesäumten Sandstrände erfüllen voll und ganz das Postkartenklischee “Paradies auf Erden”. Was diesen Ort wiederum extrem attraktiv macht für jene, die aus dem Alltagsgrau der westlichen Gesellschaft aussteigen wollen, und zwar schon seitdem das Aussteigen aus der westlichen Gesellschaft eine Sache ist. Also Pi x Daumen seit den 60ern. Die Hippies und so. Und wie wir alle aus persönlicher Erfahrung wissen, schreit der Ausstieg aus dem Alltagsgrau der Gesellschaft nach einem Soundtrack. Nach Musik, welche die Nacht zum Tag werden lässt, nach Musik zu der man träumen und lieben kann. Deshalb wurde genau solche Musik besonders gerne an den Stränden von Goa gehört. Und als dort Mitte der 80er die ersten elektronischen

Rhythmen strandeten, wurde sie begierig aufgesogen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt gab es aber wohlgemerkt noch kein Musikgenre Goa. Nein, es war einfach ein wilder Mix aus verschiedenster Musik, die zum Vibe dieses Ortes passte. Aber elektronische Musik war einfach bahnbrechend. Ihre hypnotischen Rhythmen, welche im Kopf der tanzenden Meute etwas ähnliches anstellen wie bei den Teilnehmern eines archaischen Stammestreffens, kombiniert mit außerirdischen Melodien aus synthetischen Klangerzeugern... all das schickte den Vibe von Goa in eine höhere Umlaufbahn. Das spiegelt sich recht deutlich in den Namen der Platten von damals wieder. So veröffentlichte 1993 ein Künstler namens “Goahead” die “Free Beach” EP, worauf auch ein “Anjuna Mix” zu hören ist. Das Teil kam übrigens auf Eye Q Records, ein echtes Kultlabel – mitbegründet von Sven Väth, der heute als Papa des Techno gilt. Er war auch Teil von Harthouse Records, ein weiteres Kult-Label der frühen Techno-Jahren. Und hier erschien “Forever

After”, das Debütalbum von Koxbox, die wiederum als Pioniere des Goa Trance gelten. Wenn man sich die ersten Veröffentlichungen anschaut, die aus heutiger Sicht als früher Goa Trance durchgehen, ist es auffällig zu sehen, dass viele davon auf Labels kamen, die heute für frühen Techno stehen. Es gab damals einfach noch nicht die klare Trennung zwischen Techno und Goa Trance. Alles war ziemlich melodiös, positiv und beschwinglich – gemacht für einen spaßbetonten Lebensstil. Ein Lebensstil, der sich mit dem Treiben einer bunten Meute von Hippies und Abenteurern entwickelte. So wie z.B. Eight Finger Eddie. An einer Hand mit nur drei Fingern geboren war dieser Menschen chronisch gut gelaunt, hedonistisch und lebensbejahend, immer interessiert an Psychedelika und allen Arten von Bewusstseinserweiterung... er war der Archetyp einer ganz neuen Art von Mensch, spätestens nachdem er gegen 1966 nach Anjuna Beach in Goa übersiedelte. Damals war Haschisch in Goa übrigens noch vollkommen legal.

11 Goa Trance war kein Trance aus Goa Es ist spannend, dass Goa Trance eigentlich gar nicht aus Goa kam. Jan von X-Dream, ein bedeutendes Projekt in der Geschichte des Genres, erinnert sich: “Eigentlich wurde die Musik in Europa produziert. Goa war nur der perfekte Ort um damit zu feiern, unter Palmen und umgeben von schönen Menschen, die nach etwas Besonderem suchten und die ein besonderes Leben lebten. Ich denke, Goa / Trance kam aus Europa. Deshalb hatte Goa nur indirekt einen Einfluss auf meine Karriere. Die Vibes, die uns für unsere Musik inspirierten, kamen aus unserer regionalen Szene, aus Hamburg, Frankfurt und Berlin. Interessant war damals z.B. die Trance Szene in Frankfurt. Wir hatten damals auf einigen größeren Trance Events in Frankfurt Live gespielt z.B. "Cosmic Trigger" (92/93). Hier war der Vibe Anfang der 90er eher urban und nicht so sehr von Goa beeinflusst. Wir haben damals jedes Wochenende Gigs in Europa, Amerika und Asien gespielt, aber irgendwie haben wir es nicht nach Goa geschafft. Anfang der 90er war der Name “Goa Musik” noch nicht so etabliert. In Bezug auf diesen Sound wurde eher der Begriff Trance verwendet.” Deutschland war nur ein Hotspot in Europa, und Namen wie Waldheim, die erste VooV Experience und das Plattenlabel Spirit Zone haben heutzutage einen geradezu mythischen Beiklang. Auch Mat Mushroom entdeckte die Magie von Goa in seiner regionalen deutschen Szene: “Wie eine Offenbarung war 1994 meine erste bewusst erlebte Goa Party. Alles wirkte zwar vom

Techno-Blickwinkel aus betrachtet eher unprofessionell, der DJ konnte zum Beispiel gar nicht mal richtig mixen, doch merkte man den Partymachern gleich an, dass es ihne nicht um Coolness und Schickimicki ging, sondern um phantasievolle Feste.” Noch ein Beispiel dafür, wie Goa weit über den Horizont über dem indischen Ozean hinaus wirkte. Die trubelige Szene im Vereinigten Königreich war genau so wichtig für die Entwicklung des Genres. DJ Chicago war dabei, als es passierte. Er erinnert sich an seinen langjährigen Freund und späteren 1200 Mics Kumpanen Ron Rothfield, besser bekannt als Raja Ram: “Er kam 1990 zum ersten Mal nach Goa und war von der Szene mehr als nur angetan. Als er zurück reiste, gründete er sofort die Band, The Infinity Project (TIP), die in den frühen 90ern viele Hits hatte. Raja Ram und Graham Wood organisierten dann auch TIP Partys in London, die ebenfalls ziemlich gut waren.” Überall in Europa gab es wilde Partys im Untergrund, wobei Ibiza ein weiterer Hotspot wurde. Die balearische Insel entwickelte sich schnell zu so einer Art europäischem Gegenstück von Goa, und fast jeden Abend gab es eine abgefahrene Party in einer abgefahrenen Location. Es gab auch einen klimatischen Grund für die Blüte der europäischen Szene, wie sich Chicago erinnert: “Indien hat eine Monsunzeit. Die spaßige Saison ist November bis Ende März, und im April, Mai wird es dann einfach abartig heiß und das ganze gipfelt im Monsunregen im Juni. Dann packen die meisten ihre Sachen und reisen zurück

nach Hause.” Ende der 90er waren Goa Trance Partys in Europa bereits so populär, dass eine gewisse Diskussion einsetze. Eine Diskussion, die seitdem aus der Szenekultur nicht mehr wegzudenken ist: Kommerz und Ausverkauf. Im Jahre 1998 erreichte den mushroom beispielsweise folgender Leserbrief aus Bremen: “Jeder Hans & Franz meint, eine Party organisieren zu müssen und die alten Klassiker (VooV/Shiva Moon) mutieren zu jahrmarktähnlichen Großveranstaltungen. […] Was wundern wir uns dann noch, wie wir uns auf der Tanzfläche zwischen Uschi (im “psychedelischen Wickelrock”) und Horst (im frisch erworbenen Batik Shirt, Angebot–nur 45.-) wiederfinden?“ Ein Kommentar der deutlich zeigt, dass sich Underground eben immer an den vielen definiert, die nicht dazugehören. Und dass sich die Szene in ihrem Selbstverständnis immer als Gegenkultur und Alternative verstanden hat.

12 Wegweisende Goa Trance DJs Wenn wir hier über das Aufkommen elektronischer Musik in Goa berichten, darf ein Name nicht fehlen: Laurent. Aus heutiger Sicht ein geheimnisvoller Charakter, der angeblich aus seiner Heimat Frankreich auf Reisen ging und aus Goa nie wieder zurückkehrte. Er gilt als einer der einflusstreichsten DJs jener Anfangszeit, und obwohl er damals sehr bekannt und beliebt war, hielt er sich auf sympathische Weise im Hintergrund. Was ihn von einem anderen Wegbereiter des Goa Trance unterscheidet: Goa Gil. In seinem Buch “Global Tribe: Technology, Spirituality and Psytrance”, dem vielleicht tiefgängigsten Werk über die Geschichte unserer Szene, beschreibt Autor Graham St. John eine Situation, in der Laurent und Gil eine Party aufbauten. Laurent war gerade dabei, den Mixer auf einem unscheinbaren Tisch irgendwo in der Ecke der Tanze aufzubauen, als Goa Gil befand, der DJ müsse mehr sichtbare Präsenz und Aufmerksamkeit bekommen. Eine kleiner Moment, der bezüglich des Vibes von damals trotzdem tief blicken lässt...

Goa Trance als Musikgenre Wie passierte es denn dann? Wie wurde Goa Trance zu einem eigenständigen Musik-Genre? Fragen wir nochmal DJ Chicago. Der Szene-Veteran erklärt: “In den 80ern nannten wir es Techno. Wir nannten es Techno, weil diese Musik mit Technologie geschaffen wurde. Aber dann, gegen 92, 93, erfand Sven Väth ein neues Genre namens Techno, eine andere musikalische Geschichte. Wir konnten unsere Musik also nicht mehr Techno nennen. Und wir nannten wir sie

stattdessen? Trance. Und so wurde es in den 90ern einfach Trance genannt. Aber dann gab es plötzlich ein eigenes Trance-Genre mit diesen... ihr wisst schon, eher clubbigen DJs. Wir konnten es also nicht mehr Techno nennen, wir konnten es nicht mehr Trance nennen, und wir nannten es deshalb sowohl Goa Trance als auch Psychedelic Trance. Das war irgendwann in den 90ern. So wie ich mich erinnere, wurden diese Namen damals gleich benutzt.”

Jan of X-Dream, a seminal project in the emergence and evolution of the genre, remembers: “Actually the music was produced in Europe. Goa was just the perfect place to dance to it, under palm trees and surrounded by beautiful people in search for something special who lived a special life. The way I see it, Goa / Trance came from Europe. So Goa only had an indirect influence on our career. Most of the vibes that inspired us to produce our sound we found in our local scene, in Hamburg, Frankfurt and Berlin. For instance, the Goa Trance scene in Frankfurt was very exciting back then. We played there at some major Trance events like “Cosmic Trigger” in 92 / 93. The vibe here was rather urban and not so much influenced by Goa. Back then we played gigs every weekend in Europa, America and Asia, but somehow we didn't make it to Goa. At the beginning of the 90s the term “Goa” music was not yet established. DJ Chicago remembers, there was also a climatic reason for this: “India has a monsoon season. The actual fun season is from November through end of March and then in April, May its starts to get really too hot, building up to the monsoon in June, so almost everybody runs away back to their home countries.” By the end of the 90s Goa Trance parties had become so popular in Europe that a discussion set in. A discussion that seems to be an integral part of the scene ever since: Commerce and mainstream. In 1998 a reader’s letter to mushroom magazine proclaimed: “Everyone starts organizing parties, and the open air classics (VooV/Shiva Moon) turn into huge events with the vibe of a fun fair. […] It's no surprise that we are all of a sudden dancing between Lizzy (wearing a “psychedelic wraparound”) and Tom (in his recently acquired tie-dye shirt, on sale for 45.-)!” A statement that reflects that underground is always defined by a great majority who are just not part of it. Also a statement that reflects the need of the scene to distinguish itself from mass culture.

The buzzing scene of the UK was just as important in the development of the style. DJ Chicago was there when it happened. He remembers his long-year friend and later 1200 Mics colleague Ron Rothfield, well known under his artist name Raja Ram: “He came in 1990 to Goa for the first time and was blown away by the Trance scene, went back and immediately started the band, The Infinity Project (TIP) who had lots of big hits in the early 90s. Raja Ram and Graham Wood started making TIP parties in London which were also quite good.” As a matter of fact there were wild underground parties in quite all European countries. Another notable hotspot is Ibiza. The Balearic Island soon became something like the European summer counterpart of Goa with events happening in beautiful locations 8 Finger Eddie every other night. 16 Pioneering Goa Trance DJs Talking about the introduction of electronic dance music to the beaches of Goa, there is one name not to be missed: Laurent. Today a somewhat enigmatic character, it’s said that this Frenchman went travelling to Goa and never returned home. It’s sure to say that he was one of the most influential DJs of that time, and it’s safe to say that despite his popularity in the local scene he remained a very low-key and humble character. Which makes him quite different from another pioneering character: Goa Gil, known until today for his dreadlock mane and marathon DJ sets. In his book “Global Tribe: Technology, Spirituality and Psytrance”, one of the most in-depth books about the culture of our scene, author Graham St. John describes a situation in which Laurent and Gil were setting up a party. Laurent was about to install the mixer on a simple table in some random corner of the dancefloor, but Gil opined the DJ should be more visible and prominent to the audience. A small situation, yet still a deep insight into the vibe of the early days…

Goa Trance as a music genre So how did the term Goa Trance eventually become a synonym for a music genre? Let's ask DJ Chicago again. The scene veteran explains: “All through the 80s, we called it Techno music. We called it Techno music because it was made with technology. But then, around 92, 93 Sven Väth invented another genre of music called Techno music, a different musical story. So we couldn't call our music Techno any more. What are we

going to call it? So we started calling it Trance. And it was just called Trance music for a while in the 90s - and then there started to be a genre called Trance music with these... you know, more clubby DJs playing that kind of music. So we couldn't call it Techno anymore, we couldn't call it Trance anymore, and it started being known as both Goa Trance and Psychedelic Trance somewhere in the mid 90s. As I remember they were interchangeable.”

When we talk about chillout music culture, there’s a food we just can’t miss: Chai tea, the nourishing and stimulating brew with its characteristic smell that lingers over every Chillout as if it was actually a part of the sound. For a long time the term “Chill & Chai” could be seen on quite every party flyer out there.

Ingredients for 4 cups of Chai

Preparation

1. 5 tbsp black tea (Assam) 2. 1 cinnamon stick 3. 2-3 cm ginger 4. 1 teaspoon black pepper 5. 4 carnations 6. 1 stick vanilla 7. 4 tbsp brown sugar 8. 1 l water 9. 0.5 l milk (3.8% organic whole milk or oat milk)

Put all ingredients -except Assam, vanilla, sugar and milk- into a tea egg. Boil for 20 min. in water. Remove the tea egg from the brew. Add Assam in a tea bag and brew for 10 min. Remove the tea bag, add milk, sugar and vanilla, simmer for another 5 minutes. Delicious!

Nennen wir es “das Paradoxon von Chillout”: Jeder weiß, was mit gechilltem Sound gemeint ist, aber kaum jemand kann dieses Genre zusammenfassend auf den Punkt bringen. “Das Schöne an Chillout ist dass es keine Grenzen gibt, dass es viele Unterkategorien gibt und dass ständig neue Namen auftauchen” sagt Nick Miamis, besser bekannt als Side Liner und Labelmanager von Cosmicleaf Records. “Ambient, Drone, Lounge, Chill Trance, Future Garage, Progressive Chill, Downtempo und viele, viele mehr... heutzutage ist es noch schwieriger als je zuvor, die Grenzen dieses Genres zu definieren. Denn es gibt einfach so viele wechselseitige Einflüsse und gewisse Genres und Stilrichtungen werden auch schon mal doppelt benannt.”

Die mushroom Redaktion sah sich also mit einer extrem kniffligen, je geradezu unmöglichen Herausforderung konfrontiert – die Geschichte von Chillout im Psytrance Kontext zusammenfassen. Vor diesem Hintergrund räumen wir hier schon mal ein, dass das folgende keinen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit hat. Es werden Namen und Genres fehlen. Seht es als Ansporn, euch tiefer ins Chillout Genre fallen zu lassen und dort auf

23 GLITCH HOP Mit seinen schweren Bässen könnte man dieses Genre auch als Aspekt von Bass Music einordnen. Elemente aus Hip Hop und Dubstep werden hier mit einer “kaputten” Klangästhetik sowie Sounds und Samples aus der Psytrance Ecke kombiniert. Glitch Hop ist eine sehr tanzbare Form von Chillout. Insbesondere Australien und Neuseeland gelten als Hochburgen dieses Sounds, dort spielen Glitch Hop Künstler regelmäßig am Anfang oder Ende eine Party, sogar auf dem Main Floor.

PSYDUB Die schweren Bässe und langen Echos von Dub werden hier mit Sounds und Samples aus der Psytrance Ecke vermischt. Sehr tanzbar, aber auch sehr entspannt.

DUBSTEP / BASS MUSIC Dieses Genre hat eine sehr psychedelische Seite, besonders die Spielarten aus UK – was natürlich prima ins Chillout passt. Es ist jedoch wichtig festzuhalten, dass die meisten Dubstep Künstler nie was mit Psytrance zu tun hatten. Auf den frühen Partys saßen die Leute gerne, rauchten und hörten sich die Musik sehr bewusst an. Es gibt auch ein paar Überschneidungen mit der Psytrance Szene, bekannt als Psybass oder Psystep.

PSYBIENT AMBIENT Ist wohl die traditionellste Form von Chillout Musik. Dieses Genre steht in direkter Verbindung mit dem Aufkommen von elektronischer Musik, genauer gesagt mit dem Aufkommen von Synthesizern in den 1960ern. Der Klang dieser Apparate ist buchstäblich übernatürlich, denn er kommt so nicht in der Natur vor. Kein Wunder, dass er starke psychedelische Eigenschaften hat... Ambient hat klassischerweise keinerlei Beats, es ist reiner Flächensound mit intensiven Harmonien, die manchmal rhythmische Eigenschaften haben.

PSYCHILL “Ich habe ausführlich recherchiert und bin zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass die meisten Leute Psychill und Psybient als Synonym verwenden. […] Es ist schwierig, sie auseinander zu halten” sagt Iurii. Psychill kommt mit vielen Einflüssen aus der World Music Ecke, mysteriösen Sprachsamples und vielen Querverweisen zu psychedelischen / transzendentalen Erfahrungen. Oft ist ein langsamer 4-4tel Beat zu hören, der das ganze tanzbar macht.

Ambient mit einem psychedelischen Twist. “Ich denke moderner Psybient ist nicht zwingendermaßen ohne Beats”, sagt Iurii von psybient.org – oft wird dieser Begriff als Synonym für Psychill gebraucht.

LOUNGE Die Geschichte dieses Genres geht in die 1950er zurück. Aber wenn wir heute über Lounge reden, denken die meisten an einen poppigen, irgendwo mainstreamigen Ansatz von Chillout Musik. Wichtige Merkmale sind ein warmer, harmonischer Klang, mit oder ohne perkussive Elemente. Ibiza und die Cafe Del Mar Compilation wurden zum Synonym für diesen Sound. Chris Zippel, ein DJ- und Produzenten-Veteran aus Berlin, erinnert sich: “Die 'Ver-loungeung' des Chillout Genres war gleichzeitig der Beginn der Belanglosigkeit. Später war Cafe del Mar ja eher ein Schimpfwort, man sagt dann: 'Das ist cool... aber nicht so wie CDM'”.

SLOW TRANCE / PROGRESSIVE CHILLOUT Auch mit dem wunderbar alles- und nichts-sagenden Wort Downbeat umschrieben. Im Grunde ist das Psytrance mit einem 4-4tel Beat, der sehr langsam läuft.

24 Nick Miamis aka Side Liner, Labelmanager von Cosmicleaf Records, hat uns geholfen eine grobe Übersicht über die Dreh- und Wendepunkte von Chillout im Psytrance Kontext zu erstellen: Es ist, wie gesagt, verdammt schwierig Chillout auf ein paar einzelne Genres zusammen zu kürzen. Und genauso schwierig ist es, einen Anfang von Psytrance-spezifischem Chillout Sound zu finden. Während sich Goa Trance ja aus jener Ursuppe, die elektronische Tanzmusik in den 80ern und frühen 90ern noch war, herauskristallisierte, war Chillout immer ein Mix aus ganz unterschiedlichen Stilen. Künstler, veröffentlicht 1996 – und einen der größten Klassiker psychedelischer elektronischer Musik überhaupt: “Shpongle – Are You Shpongled?” aus dem Jahr 1998, ein Album das für viele bis heute ein Inbegriff grooviger Vertriptheit ist. Im gleichen Jahr ging übrigens Liquid Sound Design an den Start, ein Schwesterlabel des legendären Dragonfly, dass sich exklusiv der entspannten psychedelischen Musik widmete.

CHIlLOUT The easy-going genre that defies any definition

Let's call it “The paradoxon of Chillout”: Everyone knows what chilled-out music is, but barely anyone can give a proper definition of the genre. “The beauty of Chill music is that it has no borders, includes lots of subgenres, and new names pop up all the time,” Nick Miamis aka Side Liner, label manager of Cosmicleaf Records ponders on this fascinating subject. “Ambient, Drone, Lounge, Chill Trance, Future Garage, Progressive Chill, Downtempo and many, many more... nowadays it is harder than ever to define the borders of each genre, because of the many mutual influences and also because of the multiple tags and genres that are used to label it.”

So the mushroom editorial team was facing quite a challenge, if not a dilemma when approaching the history of Chillout music in the Psytrance context. That said, we are aware that the following article is not complete - it can’t be complete, by definition. We will miss out on some names and genres. See it as an incentive to investigate deeper into the chilled-out side of things. We gave

it a try: Exactly what is the soundtrack we hear in the Chillouts at festivals and parties, what is the music that send us flying into the depth of Inner Space behind closed eyelids? Iurii "Gagarin Project", founder of psybient.org knows one or two things about the genre and gave us a helping hand to pin down some of the most common music styles associated with Chillout culture.

27 GLITCH HOP With its focus on heavyweight basslines, this genre could be seen as another aspect of Bass music. Mixing elements of Hip Hop and Dubstep with a “broken”, e.g. glitchy sound aesthetic and samples reminiscent of Psytrance, Glitch Hop is a very danceable aspect of Chillout music. Australia and New Zealand have been historic hotspots, with Glitch Hop acts performing often at the beginning and / or the end of a party, even on the mainstage.

PSYDUB The heavyweight basses and huge echoes of Dub music combined with sounds and samples from the Psytrance context. Very danceable, yet very chill.

DUBSTEP / BASS MUSIC This genre has a very deep and psychedelic side to it, especially the sound that comes out of the UK, which fits perfectly into a Chillout context. However, most producers have no connection whatsoever with the Psytrance scene. It’s said that people at early Dubstep parties would often sit somewhere, smoke, and listen very consciously to the music. There are some overlappings, known as Psystep or Psybass.

PSYBIENT AMBIENT Is probably the most traditional form of Chillout music. The emergence of the genre is directly connected to the emergence of electronic music instruments, e.g. the synthesizer, in the 1960s. The sound from these machines is supernatural, as it is a sound that does not occur in nature. Not a big surprise that this supernatural sound has supreme psychedelic properties... Ambient is beatless music built around pad sounds and melodies that can have rhythmic properties.

Ambient with a psychedelic twist. “I think in modern use Psybient is not beatless anymore”, Iurii from psybient.org notes. Often used as a synonym for Psychill.

LOUNGE The history of this genre goes back to the 1950s. However, if we talk about Lounge these days, most people think about a somewhat poppy, mainstream take on chilled-out electronic music. It’s characterized by warmth and harmony, mellow melodies, with or without percussive elements. Ibiza and the Cafe del Mar compilation series became a synonym for this sound. Chris Zippel, veteran DJ and producer from Berlin, remembers: “The loungification, as I call it, was the beginning of triviality. Later Cafe del Mar became a derogatory term, as in ‘that’s pretty cool, it’s not just CDM…”

SLOW TRANCE / PROGRESSIVE CHILLOUT Also referred to with the wonderfully universal term Downbeat. Basically Psytrance music with a 4x4 beat firing at a very low BPM rate.

Angebot und Nachfrage: Wenn man Wirtschaftsleute fragt, ist klar, wie das Spiel zwischen den beiden läuft. Aber ich bin Musikproduzent. Und für mich ist das nicht immer einfach. Okay, nach vielen erfolgreichen Jahren in der Szene weiß ich natürlich, wie die Sachen funktionieren.

Also wie es sich mit dem Angebot und der Nachfrage in Sachen Psytrance Musik verhält. Aber ich muss euch ehrlich sagen: Dieses Wissen kollidiert immer wieder mit meinen künstlerischen Bestrebungen als Kreativer. Ja, ich bin deswegen immer

wieder richtig angepisst. Das ist das Thema heute: Warum ich mich künstlerisch nur bedingt ausleben kann, warum aktuelle Veröffentlichungen immer wieder gleich klingen und warum es gewisse Newcomer schaffen, innerhalb von wenigen Jahren horrende Gagen einzusacken.

It all sounds the same!

Supply and demand: If you ask a business guy, he knows exactly how they interact with each other. But I am a music producer, and for me it's not always easy. Okay, after many successful years in the scene I know the rules of the game pretty well. I

know how supply and demand work in the world of Psytrance music. However, this knowledge is again and again in conflict with my artistic ambitions as a creative. Actually it makes me really angry sometimes. So this is our subject for this edition: Why I

don't really have creative freedom, why the music output today sounds all the same, and how certain newcomer producers manage to ask for pretty substantial fees after they've been on the scene for just a very short time.

Ich habe fast jedes Wochenende einen Auftritt irgendwo auf diesem Planeten. Der Sound, den ich dabei spiele: Ich stehe dahinter. Aber es ist nicht unbedingt das Beste, was ich drauf habe. Ich könnte eigentlich viel mehr. Ich habe auf meiner Festplatte diverse Projekte und fertige Tracks liegen, die ich persönlich als wesentlich innovativer, dynamischer und deshalb interessanter empfinde als das, wofür mich die Szene offenbar liebt. Aber der Dancefloor will diese Sachen nicht hören. Nein, der Dancefloor will immer wieder das gleiche. Ich habe kurzfristig mal was anderes probiert, bin ein bisschen technoider geworden, habe ein

paar längere Parts mit Breakbeats eingebaut. Mein Label fand das nicht geil. Und bei den 2,3 Gigs auf denen ich diesen Sound spielte brach die Stimmung spontan ein. Okay. Also mache ich halt Schema X, ich weiß ja wie das geht und dass es die Leute lieben. Und klar, es ist toll zu sehen, wie die Leute auf meine Produktionen abgehen und eine gute Zeit haben. Balsam fürs Ego. Als Kreativer fühle ich mich aber manchmal wie ein Marathonläufer, für den das Rennen schon nach ein paar Kilometern mit brausendem Applaus beendet wird. Die Nachfrage seitens der Szene entspricht nicht wirklich dem, was ich künstlerisch zu bieten habe.

Man stelle sich ein Restaurant mit einem ambitionierten Koch vor, der über die Jahre viel Erfahrung gesammelt und ein paar echt raffinierte Rezepte entwickelt hat – aber die Kunden wollen nur jenes einzige Gericht, das am Eröffnungstag auf dem Menü stand. Langweilig.

I perform live pretty much every weekend, pretty much everywhere. The sound I play on these occasions: I do identify with it, sure. But it's not exactly the best I can do. Actually I could do much better. There's plenty of projects and finished tracks on my hard disk that are, in my opinion, much more innovative, dynamic and exciting than the music that makes me a popular artist of the scene. Thing is: Trancers don’t want to hear these productions. No, the dance floor wants more of the same, again and again and again. Some time ago I tried to carefully infuse my sets with new sound, made them a bit more technoish and added some longer Breakbeat

parts. The dance floor didn’t go for it, and neither did my label. Okay. So I just play it like I always did, the good old sound people love some much. And course that's great, it's always nice to see people having a great time with my music, its balm for the ego. But as a creative I sometimes feel like a marathon runner who is running into a cheering crowd after only a few kilometers, and just like that the race is over. The demand of the scene is not exactly what I would really like to supply. Imagine a restaurant that has an ambitious chef who gains a lot of experience over the years and comes up with some really good recipes – but all

the customers ask for is that one and only dish that was on the menu on the day of the opening. Boring.

Was für mich frustrierend ist, das ist für andere ganz fantastisch. Denn dadurch, dass die Nachfrage so klar definiert ist, ist es relativ leicht ein dazu passendes Angebot zu schaffen. Stichwort: Copycats. Die Nachmacher. Die erste große Nachmacher-Welle, an die ich mich erinnere, wurde von Neelix

For me this can be very frustrating, for others it is simply amazing. Bring in the copycats. The imitators. The first big wave of imitators I remember was triggered by Neelix. He is definitely not an imitator. On the contrary, he invented a cool new sound, and people really loved it. Offbeat and all that. And that “inspired” a lot of other producers who wanted to be just as successful, but who were not just as creative. The strange thing: The dance floor loved it, even though it sounded as if Neelix

ausgelöst. Der ist zweifelsohne kein Nachmacher. Im Gegenteil, er hat einen neuen Sound erfunden, der verdammt gut ankam. Offbeat und so. Und von diesem Gut-Ankommen wollten natürlich viele andere Nachwuchs-Produzenten was abhaben. Das aus meiner Sicht merkwürdige: Der Dancefloor fand es geil – obwohl eine Party oft so klang, als würde Neelix ein 7-Stunden Live Set hinlegen. Einige dieser Produzenten wurden damit echt erfolgreich. Die Nachfrage machte es möglich. Aber ich wage zu unterstellen,

dass die Kreativität im Sinne von “etwas Neues schaffen” auf der Strecke blieb. Natürlich ist seitdem auch viel Neues geschaffen worden. Man denke nur an die ganzen Subgenres, die es heute gibt. Das war und ist wirklich kreativ und innovativ. Aber innerhalb dieser Subgenres hat sich das Copycat Phänomen, das ich gerade beschrieben habe, sehr stark etabliert. In der schrägen Welt, in der wir leben, geht es vielen in erster Linie um Bestätigung. Generation Like. Viele fangen nur an zu produzieren, weil sie abgefeiert werden wollen. Der

Fistpump vor einem möglichst großen Publikum - und natürlich das Video davon auf Facebook: Darum geht es dieser Generation von Produzenten. Das mühselige Gefrickel im Studio, die langen Nächte, das nerdige Gehabe mit den Synthies... all das ist diesen Leuten eigentlich lästig und ein notwendiges Übel. Das geht mittlerweile so weit, dass andere Produzenten angeheuert und bezahlt werden, um anonym und hinter verschlossenen Türen die “Drecksarbeit” im Studio zu machen. Auch hier gilt: Die Nachfrage macht's möglich...

In this weird world we live in today there's many people who start producing music for the one and only reason to become famous. The fistpump in front of a massive audience – and the picture of it on Facebook: That's what it's all about for this generation of producers. All those

long nights in the studio, all the try and error, the nerdy playing around with synthesizers... these people see it as something annoying rather than something that is the fun part. By now there's even some who hire other producers and pay them good money so they do the “dirty work” in the studio. Again: The demand of the scene makes it possible...

A lot has happened since then, also a lot of positive development. Just think about all those sub-genres we have today: That's

Grundsätzlich finde ich dieses Thema sehr spannend, habe es selbst ein paar Mal probiert. Aber bei diesen Freunden habe ich den Eindruck, dass sie irgendwie so komisch arrogant geworden sind, sie verhalten sich immer so belehrend und sagen, die Dschungelmedizin sei die Lösung für alles – Alltagsstress, Rückenschmerzen, Geldprobleme. Das hat irgendwie was religiöses, fast schon fanatisches. Wie gesagt: An und für sich finde ich das Thema durchaus spannend. Aber ich will nicht so werden wie diese Freunde! Ist das normal? Ja, Erleuchtung hat immer auch einen missionarischen Aspekt. Denn in ihrem goldenen Licht sind die Schatten der Unwissenheit besonders dunkel. Nur wenige schaffen es, erleuchtet zu sein und einfach nur zu grinsen und die Klappe zu halten. Dieser Buddha-Kollege hat es angeblich geschafft. Letztendlich wollen deine Freunde dir ja nur helfen. Dass sie dabei rüberkommen wie deine Eltern am zweiten Tag des weihnachtlichen Familientreffens ist unvermeidlich.

Since my friends returned from their South America backpacking adventure, they are really into Ayahuasca. Actually I find it quite interesting myself, tried it a few times already. But I get the impression that these friends are getting more and more serious, patronizing and arrogant, they say the jungle medicine would be the solution for everything – everyday stress, back pain, money problems. It's kind of religious, almost fanatical. As I said: Actually I find Ayahuasca quite interesting. But I don't want to turn into such a person! Is that normal? There's always a missionar y aspect to enlightenment. Because the shadow of ignorance is even darker in the golden light of enlightenment. It's kind of tricky to become enlightened and to just shut up and smile. Well, apparently that Buddha dude managed to do so. In the end your frien ds just want to help you. It's not their fault that they come across like your parents on the second day of your Christmas family reun ion.

Ich bin 27, schon seit vielen Jahren von Psytrance begeistert und studiere theoretische Physik. Auf den Partys und Festivals lese und höre ich immer wieder den Begriff “Quanten”: Quanten-Therapie, Quanten-Stimulation, Quanten-Rekalibrierung. Ganz ehrlich: Für mich als angehenden Physiker machen solche Begriffe keinen Sinn. An meinem Institut geht ein Zitat herum: “Wenn du denkst, du verstehst Quantenmechanik, dann verstehst du nichts von Quantenmechanik”. Ich frage mich: Was sagt das über die Verwendung dieses Begriffs in der Psytrance Szene aus? Hallo, mein Lieber! Ich möchte dich mit noch einem anderen Konzept vertraut machen, das nicht an deiner Uni gelehrt wird: Die Quanten-Verschwörung. Der bist du offenbar zum Opfer gefallen! Das, was sie da an deiner Uni über Quantenphysik lehren, soll dich nämlich nur zu einem Sklaven machen. Gezielte Gehirnwäsche, damit du schön die Atomwaffen der Zukunft baust! Die wahre Quantenphysik wird dagegen von den Kristallfeen gelehrt, und zwar an der Uni aus Rauch, die nach brennendem Plastik riecht. Da geht sogar Schrödingers Katze ab als wäre sie von den Schmidts!

I am 27, I'm in love with Psytrance for many years already and I study theoretical physics. At parties and festivals I keep hearing and reading the term “quantum”. Quantum therapy, quantum alignment, quantum reading. At my college we often use a popular quote: “If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics”. What does that say about the Psytrance scene? Greetings! I'd like to introduce you to yet another concept of quantum physics you probably haven't heard about at your college: The quantum conspiracy. Obviously you fell victim to it! Whatever they teach at your college is supposed to make you a slave. They are washing your brain so you build them the nuclear weapons of the future. The true quantum physics is taught by the crystal elves at the university of smoke that smells like burning plastic.

Mal säurelastig-tiefenpsychedelisch, mal progressiv-verspielt aus der Hüfte heraus: Mit „Tribalism“ liefern Mindbenderz eines der abwechslungsreichsten Alben des Jahres ab. Da haben sich zwei gefunden: Philip, den meisten von uns als Motion Drive ein Begriff, veröffentlichte auf IONO – und lernte so Labelmanager Matthias kennen. Zusammen sorgen sie als Mindbenderz für psychedelisch-progressiven Rabatz feinster Machart. Regelmäßig verwendete Stilmittel ihres Debütalbums „Tribalism“ sind Ethno-Vocals und -Instrumente, welche dem Ganzen einen organischen Touch geben. Aber letztendlich fällt es angesichts der breit aufgestellten Atmosphäre schwer, das Ding in eine Schublade zu kriegen. Es ist moderner Sound, in Sachen Druck und Brillanz voll und ganz auf Höhe der Zeit. In seinen warmen Klangfarben spiegelt sich ein ausgeklügelter Mix aus analoger und digitaler Studiotechnik wieder. Und im ansteckend dynamischen Aufbau der Tracks die langjährige DJ-Erfahrung von Matthias sowie das technische Studio-Wissen von Philip. „Unser Ziel war, verschiedene Facetten zu zeigen und nicht ein Album mit 9 gleich klingenden Tracks zu machen,“ fassen die beiden ihre Kooperation zusammen. Der Bademeister ist nicht nur ein Musik-Act, sondern auch absoluter Hingucker auf Psy-Partys. Er hat die Northern Experience Family neu erfunden, seitdem geht es steil nach oben.

The “Bademeister” is not only a music act and an eye-catcher at psy parties. He has reinvented the Northern Experience Family, and since then, it's only been going forward.

Wie kam es zur Kunst figur des „psychedelischen Bademeisters“?

Seit über 20 Jahren bin ich in der Psytrance-Szene unterwegs. Damals war das Aussehen völlig egal. „Goa“ bedeutete bunt und tolerant. Mein Kollege Udo, aka DJ c.u.l.t., brachte mich damals auf die Idee: „Als DJ brauchst du ein Markenzeichen.“ Ich schnappte mir einen Bademantel, druckte BADEMEISTER drauf, der Schnappschuss davon wurde innerhalb von einer Woche 1000 mal geteilt.

Udo und du haben Northern Experience vor gar nicht allzu langer Zeit neu erfunden. Wie kommt’s jetzt zu NE-Rec? Wir hatten von Anfang an den Plan ein Label Northern Experience zu machen, wollten aber warten bis wir genug Producer sind und eine Compilation vermarkten können. Mit der „Northern Experience compilation No.1“ war es jetzt so weit. Ich gründete NE-Rec. und brachte die Platte raus. Ich produziere also auch.

Was hören wir als nächstes von dir?

Neben der Compilation haben wir auch die „Humanity EP von Goarilla“ rausgebracht. Dann wird es vom Artist „Dymoon“ eine EP geben und mein zweiter Track „Energy Vampires“ wird hoffentlich noch diesen Monat fertig. Der ist wesentlich kraftvoller und wurde von „Chrizzlix“ gemastert. Party mit dem Bademeister könnt ihr am 09.02.2018 auf der Northern Experience im C atonium in Hamburg machen.

Three questions you always wanted to ask DJ Bademeister.

How did you create the character of a "psychedelic lifeguard"? For over 20 years I am involved in the psytrance scene. At that time superficiality did not matter at all. "Goa" meant being colourful and tolerant. My colleague Udo, aka DJ c.u.l.t., once said: "As a DJ you need a trademark." So, I grabbed a bath robe, printed BADEMEISTER on it and a snapshot of it was shared 1000 times within one week. Udo and you invented N orthern Experience. How did you develop NE-Rec? We had a plan to do a Northern Experience label right from the start, but we wanted to wait until we had enough producers to do a compilation. With the "Northern Experience compilation No.1" the time had come. I founded NE-Rec. and released the record. I produce, too. When will we hear from you next? Besides the compilation, we also released the "Humanity EP by Goarilla". There’s also an EP from the artist "Dymoon" upcoming and my second track "Energy Vampires" will hopefully be finished this month. It’s more powerful and was mastered by "Chrizzlix". Das Psychedelic Circus Open Air Festival verwischt die Grenzen zwischen Realität und Fiktion in seiner Traumwelt aus Musik und Zirkus. Auch in diesem Jahr hat der psychedelische Wanderzirkus wieder in Göhlen/Ludwigslust auf dem bewährten Gelände gastiert. Bei bestem Wetter wurde vom 31.5. bis zum 4.6.18 wie gewohnt friedlich von Psytrance-Fans aus aller Welt an 5 Tagen und 4 Nächten auf den beiden Stages Arena und Manege zu feinster Musik gefeiert. Die Deko von Mae und Moe in der Open Air Arena war atemberaubend schön und zusammen mit dem Mapping, der Lasershow und Feuerkünstlern, platziert auf den zwei Extra-Bühnen, bot sich ein wundervoller Augenschmaus und ein perfektes Setting für die besten Musik-Acts der Szene. Die Manege, im zum Markenzeichen gewordenen Zirkuszelt, erfuhr in diesem Jahr eine erhebliche Aufwertung, die Bühne in Form eines Clowngesichts wurde spektakulär gemappt und auch hier gab’s eine klasse Lasershow dazu. Wie in jedem Jahr lud eine kunterbunte Shopmeile mit einem breitgefächerten Sortiment dazu ein, sich über die

neuesten Trends für den kommenden Sommer zu informieren und das ein oder andere Schnäppchen zu machen. Chai und mehr wie immer lecker und einladend und auch für Body und Soul wurde mit Yoga / Meditation-Angeboten gesorgt. Kurz gesagt, am Eingang gab’s mit dem Bändchen ein Rundum-Sorglos Paket für 5 Tage.

Resümee: das Zirkus Projekt ist noch bunter geworden, das Line-Up kaum mehr zu toppen und somit sollte man sich das Datum Psychedelic Circus 2019 schon mal in den Kalender eintragen. Am 9.5.2019 heisst es wieder: Vorhang auf, Manege frei :) www.psychedelic-circus.com

The Psychedelic Circus Open Air Festival blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction in its dream world of music and circus. Also this year the psychedelic travelling circus was a guest again in Gรถhlen/Ludwigslust on the seasoned grounds. In best weather from 31.5. to 4.6.18 Psytrance fans from all over the world celebrated peacefully as usual on 5 days and 4 nights on both stages Arena and Manege to the finest music. The decoration of Mae and Moe in the Open Air Arena was breathtakingly beautiful and together with the mapping, the laser show and the fire artists, placed on the two extra stages, offered a wonderful feast for the eyes and a perfect setting for the best music acts of the scene. The circus ring, which has become a trademark, was considerably upgraded this year, the stage in the form of a clown face was mapped spectacularly and there was also a great laser show. As every year, a colourful shop mile with a wide assortment invited you to inform yourself about the latest trends for the coming summer and to make one or two bargains. Chai and more as always tasty and inviting and also body and soul was provided for with yoga / meditation offers. In short, at the entrance, with the ribbon you received an all-round carefree package for 5 days. Summary: the circus project has become even more colourful, the line-up can hardly be topped anymore and so the date Psychedelic Circus 2019 should be entered in your calendar. ANTARIS war ein wunderschönes Festival, dank dem besten Publikum der Welt: So viele internationale, entspannte und umsichtige Gäste, die dazu beitragen, dass die ANTARIS ein harmonischer Kosmos ist! Neu war der rote Drache von Clear Sound, der seine warmen Bässe über den Platz gepumpt hat. Die talentierten Jungs von Quadrasonic und diesmal auch Altmeister Eat Static haben ein grandioses Set in Surround gespielt. Die Planetendeko von Buju auf dem Main Floor sah zu allen Tageszeiten fantastisch aus, und der Alternative Floor, vom neuen Team Flowers of Life,

schimmerte fragil und magisch zugleich. Die Feen und Elfen vom Elphame Fairycircus kreierten im Chillout zu Vibes und Bässen eine märchenhaft ekstatische Atmosphäre. Am Montagabend wurden die Antarianer dann nach vier Tagen und drei Nächten bestem Festivalflair mit einem riesigen Lächeln nach Hause geschickt. Klar, dass es bei der nächsten ANTARIS zum 25. The 24th ANTARIS was a beautiful festival, thanks to the best audience in the world: so many international, relaxed and openminded guests that contribute to the ANTARIS being a harmonious cosmos! New was the Red Dragon by Clear Sound who pumped its warm bass across the airfield. The talented guys from Quadrasonic and this time also master Eat Static played a terrific set in surround. Buju's Planet Deco on the Main Floor looked fantastic at all times of the day, and the Alternative Floor was fragile and magically shimmering with the new Flowers of Life team. The fairies and elves of the Elphame Fairycircus created a fairytale atmosphere in the Chillout. On Monday evening, the Antarians were then sent home after four days and three nights of best festival flair with a huge smile. Wir sollten nicht böse sein, man hätte schon Leute weggeschickt, die von noch viel weiter weg angereist waren. Wir können nicht begreifen, wie so ein fataler Organisationsfehler passieren kann! In all den Party Jahren ist uns so etwas zum ersten Mal passiert.” - Autsch. Auch das Paradies hat nun ein Problem mit Überbevölkerung. *** Während der Techno auf Trance Partys nach wie vor ein kontrovers diskutiertes Thema ist, werden Neelix-Sets stets mit großer Begeisterung aufgenommen. “Das Erste was mir zu Ohren kam, war, dass DJ Zosma von einem der Gäste angegriffen wurde, weil ihm der Proggi Sound nicht gefiel! Da hatte ich erst recht Angst und Bange. Zum Glück war dies unberechtigt: Mein Set kam sehr gut an.” - Die psychedelischen Puristen wurden damals immer dogmatischer. Und sie haben sich durchgesetzt: Schon bald hörte man auf den Second Floors weder Progressive House noch Techno. *** “Seit dem 1. Dezember sind magic mushrooms [in den Niederlanden] illegal” - Angesichts der weltweiten Legalisierung-Entwicklungen von Cannabis Produkten dürfen wir gespannt sein, ob sich das womöglich demnächst wieder ändert. Wir drücken die Daumen. ***

“Interessant ist die Tatsache, dass auch die Musikerkollegen und Labels, die eigentlich für herzhaften, schnellen Psytrance bekannt sind, mittlerweile eine Affinität zu Techno entwickeln.” - Und wo sind sie heute? Entweder endgültig in eine andere Szene abgewandert oder zurück zum guten, alten Psytrance Programm. *** Thema Duschen auf Festivals: “Viele Fraggles warteten lange auf eine Einzelkabine und hatten Probleme damit, sich in den öffentlichen Einrichtungen zu duschen. Wie können Psy-Fraggles so prüde sein?” - Da sind sie: Die kleinen Risse in jener sorgsam gehegten Fassade der freidenkenden Lichtwesen. Ist halt doch kein zweites Woodstock.

Katja & Frank, two mushroom readers from Germany tell their summer experience: “Full of pleasant anticipation we made our way to Boom. […] When we arrived, we were informed that nobody would get in any more because tickets were sold out. We should not get angry, they already sent away people who had come an even longer way. We cannot understand this fatal organizational failure! In all the party years, this happened to us for the first time.” - Yikes. Paradise got an overpopulation problem. *** While Techno at Trance parties is still a controversial issue, Neelix isn't:

“The first thing I heard was that DJ Zosma was attacked by a visitor because he didn't like his Progressive sound. So I was very nervous before my gig. But in the end my set worked out perfectly” - Psychedelic purists were on the rise back then, and soon no one would play Progressive House or Techno on a second floor anymore. *** “[...] Even many of those DJs and labels who are well known for their rather twisted psychedelic sound now have an affinity for Techno” - Where are they now? There's not much left of that trend, right? Well, some left the scene altogether and others went back to good, old Psytrance music. Even Progressive is Psychedelic again these days. *** “Since 1st December magic mushrooms are illegal in [the Netherlands]” - In face of the current legalization developments of cannabis products all around the world we might hope that this will change again one day soon. Fingers crossed! *** About showers at festivals: “Very strange was to see the long queues in front of the showers. Many fraggles wanted a single shower cabin and many had problems to take their showers in the public shower areas. How can Psy fraggles be so shy?” - And there they are: Those fine cracks in the well-maintained facade of a scene that is all about oneness, freedom and counter culture. Seems like this ain't a modern Woodstock after all.

Das warme Bier. Die Insulaner wussten so ziemlich in allen Dingen und Belangen des galaktischen Kosmos besser Bescheid als alle anderen Bewohner der unterwürfigen Steinewelten, auf deren Kopfkronenbereich eben ihre Insel wie ein Matrix-Verankerungs-Zentrum lagerte, um die Welt in ihren Verfügungen zu balancieren. Daher sahen sie das neue Licht kommen, weit und lange bevor die Möchte-Seismologen der Kaderblockwarte begannen zu bedenken, ob eine Beratschlagsteiloposition gegeben sein könnte und, ob eventuell erwogen werden sollte, über die unausweichlichen Phänomene des Multiversums zu sinnieren so wie neulich erst vor 25920 Jahren. Das alle ihre in Frage kommenden Sinnierungen sowieso sinnlos waren, ahnten sie selber und irgendwie war ihnen daher alles egal, sie versinniesierten sich einfach weiter ohne Sinn und Verstand und benahmen sich so wie immer, als ob der heutige Tag der Anfang aller Troll-Dinge sei. Soltek beobachtete die Kommunikationsdiskrepanz der Neigungsnormalitätsbremser mit großer Aufmerksamkeit. Sehr schnell war ihm klar, dass hier ein Übersetzungsfehler waltete, auf den bereits Opa-Soltek hingewiesen hatte. Aber da die Herrn Insulaner sich behaarlich weigerten,

sich temporär zu nullen, um das Zepter mit den Frauen Insulanern zu brechen, wahrscheinlich hatten sie damit mal schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht und waren daher nicht bereit, die Regler des Boltums auch nur eine Sekunde aus der Hand zu legen,….konnte zum wiederholten Mal nicht das passieren, was passieren musste und wieder einmal wurde das Bier warm, obwohl es deutlich gegen das kosmische Großgrundgesetz verstieß, das in aller Deutlichkeit die Existenz von warmen Bier untersagte. Da Soltek ebenfalls kein warmes Bier mochte, ließ er den Vorfall ebenfalls ehr unbeachtet, zumal ihm klar war, dass der ein und andere finderisch begabte Insulaner mit an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit irgend eine geniale Frequenzbierkühlung erfinden würde. Wenn man sich auf eines verlassen konnte und kann, dann die Tatsache, dass der Tatbestand eines warmen Bieres jeder Zeit in der Lage ist, das beste, das aktivierendste, das konstruktivste nur irgend mögliche aus einem Menschen herausholen und schon in der unmittelbaren Folge in der Lage wird sein können, die Situation vorteilig nachhaltig zu verändern. Soltek schmunzelte in sich hinein und liess sich von Miss Asia einen feinen grünen Tee bringen und wartete ab.
