T

his is the first issue of ‘What’s On’ to be produced by the Cambridge Centre for Musical Performance Studies. We are delighted to receive the baton from Sarah Williams, Communications Manager in the Faculty of Music, who has masterfully overseen production of the termly leaflets over the past three years.

most distinctive factor is neither the quantity nor the quality of performing activity here (although each is of the highest order): rather, what is most remarkable is the fusion of artistic and intellectual excellence and expertise that distinguishes not only the performances by and for the Cambridge community but also the compositional, research and other music-related work going on here.

We have included details of dozens of concerts, workshops, ‘talk-and-play events’ and other activities taking place in the Music Faculty, the colleges and elsewhere in Cambridge. Nevertheless, this selection only scratches the surface of a range of activity that is surely unrivalled in any university environment in the world. I am often asked what characterises the performance scene in Cambridge, and the word that first comes to mind is ‘buzz’. I think the

CAMBRIDGE CENTRE FOR MUSICAL PERFORMANCE STUDIES (CMPS)

Launched in April 2015, CMPS plays a leading international role in the field of musical performance studies. In Cambridge, the Centre supports a programme of masterclasses, workshops, Side-by-Side events, and other ‘talk-and-play events’ such as lecture-recitals and open rehearsals. These shed light on the knowledge that is created and conveyed in performance, and on how musical performance takes shape over time. During Michaelmas Term 2016, CMPS will host public presentations, ‘Practising Performance’ events, and a ‘Meet the Composer’ session held with the Britten Sinfonia. CMPS will also run a reading group for young researchers featuring talks from visiting scholars. The Cambridge Centre for Musical Performance Studies is directed by John Rink, working in collaboration with Margaret Faultless, Martin Ennis and Abigail Dolan.

Matthew Schellhorn explores notions of time and its passing in Messiaen’s landmark piano cycle, identifying a conception of musical form unlike that of any other composer.

Faculty of Music Postgraduate Open Day Part of the University of Cambridge Postgraduate Open Day Tuesday, 29 November 2016 5:00pm – 6:30pm, Recital Room, Faculty of Music Lecture-recital Experimental Performance Practices: New Possibilities for Music Performance Paulo de Assis Orpheus Institute; CMPS Visiting Fellow A close historical survey reveals that the notion of ‘musical interpretation’ was born only in the course of the 19th century, bound to a specific set of new rules, constraints and expectations. Other words and other practices were in use before its appearance, and other terms and praxes can emerge in the future. This talk will offer an overview of the terms used in the past, and propose new ones for the future. Situating the discourse in a postinterpretive horizon of possibilities, it will argue for an emancipated, liberated and creative mode of performing musical objects from the past. Songs of Love, War and Melancholy Jacques-François Gallay Works for natural horn and piano Anneke Scott (1), natural horn Steven Devine (2), piano Considered the last great natural horn virtuoso, Gallay was a leading 19th-century soloist as well as principal horn of the influential Théâtre-Italien in Paris. In this lecture-recital Anneke Scott and Steven Devine discuss and perform works by Gallay and his contemporaries, supporting Gallay's belief that the horn was ‘another voice which sings’. Orchestral Conducting Workshop Sian Edwards (3) Head of Conducting, Royal Academy of Music Mozart's Overture to The Magic Flute will be the basis for discussion and active class participation. The class will be open to conductors and instrumentalists.

Sian Edwards has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras including Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Berlin Symphony and Vienna Symphony Orchestra. She has a particularly close relationship with Ensemble Modern in Germany and has made recordings with London Philharmonic Orchestra and English National Opera. Enhanced Performance Techniques Sophie Langdon (4) Professor of Violin, Royal Academy of Music EPT – Enhanced Performance Techniques – is a raft of mind and body skills evolved by Sophie Langdon. Combining the use of these skills and techniques has already helped many young artists and music students to achieve success in the area of music performance, creating a greater sense of ease and reducing daily life stress. EPT includes meditation and visualising techniques, combined with yoga stretches and breathing exercises. The overall emphasis is understanding how each person ticks, and to customise the techniques for each individual. Come along and see if it suits you! TICKETS: Admission free

J. S. Bach Christmas Oratorio Cambridge University Collegium Musicum and Ensemble Pro Victoria perform the first three cantatas of J. S. The intercollegiate Instrumental Awards Scheme enables gifted musicians to reach a high standard of performance in chamber music. Richard Causton (1), the Music Faculty’s Reader in Composition, introduces this term’s Composers’ Workshops and welcomes to the Faculty those interested in new music. He will speak briefly about his own work before introducing the inaugural holders of the Faculty’s Chamber Music Residency, the Ligeti Quartet.

One of the most original and gifted of the younger generation of British composers, Mark Simpson (3) is equally established as a clarinetist, having in 2006 become the first-ever winner of both the BBC Young Musician of the Year and the BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year competitions. Amongst his recent works is the opera Pleasure, premiered by Opera North earlier this year.

Jane Manning: New Music for Voice

Elinor Bennett

During her long career, soprano Jane Manning (2) has redefined what composers might ask of the voice. Described in the Daily Telegraph as ‘THE voice of classical contemporary vocal music in this country’, she has premiered over 350 new works, including many by the world’s leading composers, and has written several books on related subjects.

Visiting Professor of Harp at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Elinor Bennett (4) presents a practical session for composers on writing for harp. Elinor has collaborated with many of Wales’ leading composers on new works for harp, and she brings an invaluable perspective on an instrument that can seem as mysterious as it is beguiling.

In his second quartet Tippett looked back to the first glorious age of English music with a strongly contrapuntal work, which includes a heartrending Passacaglia worthy of Purcell. For many (including the composer himself) Beethoven's Op. 131 is his greatest quartet – certainly the one in the most awkward key! Bartók’s fifth quartet ranges from the almost barbaric to some of the most yearningly beautiful music ever written. Op. 127 is the most lyrical of Beethoven’s late quartets containing a set of variations, which never fails to amaze with its breathtaking beauty and invention.
