DISNEY’S FROZEN is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
The Musicians performing in this production are members of the Boston Musicians Association.
When I was asked by Ogunquit Playhouse’s Artistic Director, Brad Kenney, to direct this production of Disney’s FROZEN, I was reminded of a book that a friend had given me many years back.
Through The Uses of Enchantment by physiologist Bruno Bettelheim, I was enlightened and delighted at the notion that our traditional fairy tales actually serve a purpose.
Could a young child or young adult subliminally absorb qualities that we admire just by reading or watching a fairy tale? As demonstrated in the countless fairy tales that we all grew up with, compassion, courage, and determination are among the many virtues conveyed. But, I am especially drawn to the virtues exemplified in our modern fairy tale, FROZEN. The character Elsa’s journey is about learning to accept herself; she hides her true nature in fear of judgement. While the character Anna embodies the virtues of selflessness, as she comes to realize that true love sometimes means sacrificing one’s own well being for another. While it's certainly true that adolescents in every generation experience feelings of inadequacy, I would argue that today’s kids face ever-greater challenges in this regard. If our story can impart virtuous ideals, perhaps untouched in previous tales, then the purpose is well-served.
Disney’s animated tale has been translated into a number of different stage incarnations around the globe, and there will be many more in the future, to be sure. However, with this particular rendition, the creatives on board (and you know who you are), including every single crew and cast member, have strived to create an ever so unique FROZEN, with the hope that the messages therein will resonate with us all.
As ever, I am grateful to The Ogunquit Playhouse and The Music Hall for making the magic happen.
Angelique Ilo Director
