EVENING CONCERTS

Welcome to our Autumn 2017 Season

We are very excited by the music being presented this autumn. Each concert is a stand-alone event, but there are also themes that extend across several concerts and seasons. Ensemble 360 has long looked forward to presenting the Sequenzas by Luciano Berio: two of his short, often humorous, always virtuosic works can be heard on 9 October and 29 November. And now, to add to the Leonore Trio’s compelling Beethoven series, Tim Horton embarks on a cycle of Schubert’s six greatest piano sonatas. Plus, join us for the launch of our new global music series, World of Strings, on Friday 17 November with an evening of Brazilian-infused music devised by classical violinist Viktoria Mullova. This is followed by Sheffield’s Rafiki Jazz, who’ll bring their unique global music with a contemporary twist to the Crucible Studio for the first time. Enjoy the music! Angus Smith, Artistic Director

Saturday 2 September 7.30 - 9.10pm St Martin’s Church, Stoney Middleton £20 £14 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s

HAYDN String Quartet in C Op.20 No.2 BEETHOVEN String Quartet Op.95 Serioso RAVEL String Quartet in F Some years ago, Peter Cropper, founder of Music in the Round, came across the beautiful St Martin’s Church at Stoney Middleton, built in 1415 as a thanksgiving offering for the English victory at the Battle of Agincourt. With its rare octagonal nave, Peter immediately envisaged this as a perfect setting for a string quartet concert. With limited audience capacity, early booking is advised (via the office) for this programme devised by the Marmen Quartet for a late summer evening.

Monday 9 October 7.15 - 9.10pm Crucible Studio Theatre £20 £14 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s

SCHUBERT String Quartet in E D.353 BERIO Sequenza IV for piano MAHLER Piano Quartet in A minor KORNGOLD Piano Quintet in E Op.15 Two wonderful and overlooked chamber works from composers whose reputations largely rest in music written for huge forces. Mahler’s early Quartet has great youthful charm, while Korngold’s Quintet not only displays the grand, sweeping scale of his later film music but also contains secret codes addressed to his fiancée. No wonder Mahler declared Korngold to be a ‘musical genius’!

Tickets sold for this special concert in memory of Peter will support our Bridge development scheme for young quartets. Please purchase your tickets via the office info@musicintheround or 0114 281 4660.

London-born Edwin York Bowen was nicknamed ‘the English Rachmaninov’ and enjoyed huge popularity before the First World War, but his overtly romantic style fell out of favour in later years. The Oboe Sonata was written in 1930 and championed by Leon Goossens, who did more than any other Englishman to establish the oboe as a solo instrument.

For their final performance as Music in the Round’s ‘Bridge’ quartet, the Marmen Quartet launch the evening with effervescent works by Mozart and Haydn. Brahms’ Op.51 quartets were the first works for this formation that he was willing to publish, even then after a period of immense doubt – he actually described the pair as “written for the second time.” It was well worth waiting!

Banish the early winter gloom and luxuriate in arrangements of classic songs by legendary Brazilian composers Caetano Veloso, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Marisa Monte and Zequinha de Abreu played by a stellar quartet of soloists. This project was devised by internationally renowned violinist Viktoria Mullova who, in the words of The Guardian, brings “dancing virtuosity” to music that is “as dazzling as the sights and sounds of Brazil.”

Coloured by inspirational vocals from the Sufisoul singer Sarah Yaseen and Hebrew-Hindi vocalist Avital Raz, Rafiki Jazz’s Crucible Studio debut also includes a new collaborative piece emerging from our World of Strings project. Charles Ritchie (of Talking Gigs) hosts the first half of this concert, which will include informal introductions to the music, exploring the diverse influences and variety of instruments featured.

Ernst von Dohnányi belongs to the same generation of Hungarian composers as Bartók and Kodály, but unlike his contemporaries he showed little interest in folk music and instead preferred to preserve and champion the Romantic tradition of Liszt and Brahms. The Sonata in A minor was written in 1826 and dedicated to Archduke Rudolf of Austria, one of Beethoven’s most important patrons. Schubert wrote after the first performance that “several people assured me that under my fingers the keys began to sing. If this is sincere, it makes me very happy since I cannot stand the wretched hacking which is typical of even excellent pianists, as it pleases neither the ear nor the heart!”

Jason Rebello is one of the most inventive pianists to emerge from the UK since the early 90s. His concert in Sheffield was one of the Sheffield Jazz highlights of 2016 and we couldn’t wait to bring him back with this brilliant international trio. 21
