WELCOME TO OUR AUTUMN 2018 PROGRAMME, WHICH THIS YEAR EXTENDS OUR BOUNDARIES TEMPORALLY AND GEOGRAPHICALLY. Our World of Strings series takes a close look at two periods of music that are especially striking for their invention: the Baroque era and the present day. Our fantastic guests, Rachel Podger, Peter Seymour and the Ligeti Quartet have devised programmes of endless fascination but also with a few surprises, not least the reverence for tradition that is evident in some of today’s finest writing for string quartet. There is also the opportunity to revel in wonderful music by Bach in Angela Hewitt’s solo recital and – back by popular demand – our Bach Walk event led by Ensemble 360’s Benjamin Nabarro and Gemma Rosefield. With limited spaces, early booking is advised. We are also delighted to be hosting Rafiki Jazz, the brilliant Doric String Quartet and the Leonore Piano Trio, while Ensemble 360 focus on glorious Romantic music with the works of Johannes Brahms at the core. We wish you a very happy autumn of varied and gripping listening! Angus Smith Artistic Director

SHEFFIELD JAZZ KODÁLY Serenade Op.12 for 2 violins and viola DVORÁK Terzetto in C Op.74 for 2 violins and viola Although his work was greatly admired abroad, Zoltán Kodály’s love of the Hungarian countryside and tradition kept him in his homeland even during troubled political times. Folk music is clearly to the fore in his engaging Serenade and there is an abundance of rich melodies. Dvorák’s lively Terzetto was originally written for amateur players, but the technical demands of the piece turned out to be beyond the capabilities of the original dedicatees!

EVENING CONCERT
ANGELA HEWITT Piano
Saturday 13 October 6.30 – 9.40pm Crucible Studio Theatre £20 £14 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s
BACH The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2 BWV 870–893 Following her sell-out performance in 2016, Angela Hewitt makes a welcome return to the Studio for a performance of one of Bach’s greatest keyboard collections. Arguably one of Bach’s most influential works, the dedication of The Well-Tempered Clavier states that its purpose is ‘for the profit and use of musical youth desiring instruction, and especially for the pastime of those who are already skilled in this instruction’.
Angela Hewitt’s Bach has long been a thing of wonder. Each prelude and fugue has a character of its own and contributes something special to Bach’s iridescent kaleidoscope of musical invention. The Daily Telegraph
Please note the early start time for this concert, which will also include a 30-minute interval.

ENSEMBLE 360
SCHUMANN Violin Sonata No.1 in A minor Op.105 BRAHMS Horn Trio in E flat Op.40
Tuesday 6 November 12.45 - 1.40pm Firth Hall, University of Sheffield
Schumann’s first two violin sonatas were written in 1851, the same year as his popular Third Symphony, the Rhenish. His clear intent in the A minor sonata was to prioritise the lyricism and expressivity that is characteristic of his chamber pieces from this period. Brahms’ Horn Trio was composed on a summer visit to the Black Forest region in 1865. In this majestic work, and perhaps inspired by his surroundings, Brahms stated a preference for using an old-fashioned Waldhorn (forest horn) for its characteristic mellow, rounded tone.

Sumptuous playing and beguiling warmth… revelatory playing.
A cycle of the complete Beethoven violin sonatas, cello sonatas and piano trios (concert 6 of 8) BEETHOVEN Cello Sonata in G minor Op.5 No.2 Variations for Piano Trio in E flat Op.44 Violin Sonata in F Op.24 Spring Trio in B flat Op.11 Gassenhauer The vitality, energy and optimism of youth is brilliantly captured in this collection of early works by Beethoven. In the cello and violin sonatas, there is also a strong sense of musical tradition from an age before Beethoven tore up the rulebook, most evident in extended passages where the impression is of virtuoso piano sonatas with occasional accompaniment.

BRAHMS String Quartet in C minor Op.51 No.1 LAURENCE OSBORN New Work for Piano Quintet, commissioned by The Royal Philharmonic Society KORNGOLD Piano Quintet in E Op.15
£20 £14 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s
The Doric’s performance opens with an effervescent Haydn quartet, dedicated to Grand Duke Paul of Russia. Beethoven’s late quartets stand at the pinnacle of classical chamber music and, anecdotally, the Opus 131 quartet in C sharp minor was the composer’s own favourite. In Bartók’s striking Fifth quartet, the composer’s love of Hungarian folk music is immediately apparent.
The Daily Telegraph
The two beautiful Opus 51 quartets were the first works for this formation that Brahms was willing to publish, though only after a period of immense self-doubt and revision. Each is conceived on the same grand scale that characterises Brahms’ symphonic writing. The lavish style of Korngold’s famous Hollywood scores is pre-dated by

his wonderful piano quintet in which distinct traces of the late Romantic works of Elgar and Rachmaninov can be detected. Ensemble 360 are also delighted to feature a world première by rising young composer Laurence Osborn who has already written for the London Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ensemble 360 presents three piano quartets written by composers in the earliest stages of their careers. Mahler’s Piano Quartet dates from 1876, the end of his first year at the Vienna Conservatory, where the only completed movement was first performed. Josef Suk’s work was written at the Prague

Conservatoire, and the 17 year-old student dedicated the work to the man destined to become his fatherin-law, Antonin Dvorák. Brahms’ second work for this instrumental line-up features a gloriously languid Adagio that possesses the trademark serenity of this supremely Romantic composer.

CONCERT DURATION
We believe that classical music should be for everyone, including young children and families. Each season includes family events that have been specially tailored for younger listeners.
Please be aware that all concert end times are supplied as approximate timings only and may be subject to change.
We generally recommend our evening concerts for children age 7+. However, if you think that your child will sit quietly, then we have no problem with younger children in our audiences. To give everyone the best possible concert experience, we’re currently trialling some designated ‘family-friendly’ seats at every concert, so should your child become distracted, you can make a discreet exit between pieces. For more information please ask a member of staff before a concert, check our website or call the office on 0114 281 4660.
NEW TO MUSIC IN THE ROUND? If you’re completely new to our classical concerts, then our first-time deal offers you your first pair of tickets for just £5* each. Please make yourself known at the Sheffield Theatres box office, in person or on the phone. (Offer not available online. A maximum of two tickets can be purchased per household.) *The Bach Walk, Concerteenies and Giddy Goat schools concert are not included.
