Ensemble 360

Resident in South Yorkshire with Music in the Round, Ensemble 360 brings together eleven world-class musicians to form one versatile group of five string players, five wind players and a pianist. Claudia Ajmone-Marsan VIOLIN / Naomi Atherton HORN / Juliette Bausor FLUTE / Laurène Durantel DOUBLE BASS / Amy Harman BASSOON / Matthew Hunt CLARINET / Tim Horton PIANO / Benjamin Nabarro VIOLIN / Gemma Rosefield CELLO / Adrian Wilson OBOE Ensemble 360 will be joined by guest violists across the season.

Welcome!

We are delighted to present an Autumn programme packed with wonderful music: a series of concerts that is perfect for celebrating 30 years of Music in the Round. Times may have changed since 1984, but the emotional power of the music remains constant. I would, though, like to throw an additional spotlight on the resident and guest performers who will be featuring. The ‘perfect storm’ of being able to purchase a new Steinway piano through the generous support of so many of Angus Smith, Artistic Director our friends and the receipt of a legacy from the estate of Miss Diana Kurzman allows us to launch a series of Kurzman Piano Recitals which will become a regular fixture. We’re thrilled that Steven Osborne, a performer of immense passion, skill and drive, will set us on our way. We also welcome effervescent clarinettist Emma Johnson (pictured on the front cover) with her duo partner John Lenehan and look forward to continuing our association with the brilliant Elias String Quartet and the irrepressible Kuljit Bhamra.

These are extraordinary times for the players of Ensemble 360. Flautist Juliette Bausor was recently appointed a ‘Rising Star’ of the European Concert Hall Organisation, Adrian Wilson has been appointed Principal Oboe of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and Amy Harman is the first bassoonist to have been selected for representation by the prestigious Young Classical Artist Trust. This great news merely confirms what we already know and are proud to proclaim: our resident musicians are among the best of any in the land.

Crucible Theatre, Studio 9 October 2014 The Women of Steel Statue Appeal is raising £150,000 for a permanent celebration of the achievements of the women who kept the steel mills rolling when their men were away at the front during two world wars. The surviving women, now in their nineties, have one last wish: to be recognised with a statue outside Sheffield City Hall, where they went to tea dances during WWII. The appeal caught the city’s imagination and reawakened a spirit of community. More than £100,000 has been raised in less than six months. Now, less than £14,000 is needed. Acclaimed sculptor Martin Jennings is working on the statue, which it is hoped will also become an inspiration to generations of women to come. This concert is one of three featuring local musicians who are making their contribution by donating proceeds to the Appeal. The others are a folk concert in Sheffield Cathedral on 26 November and a pop concert which sold out Sheffield City Hall last November. Find out more at www.sheffield.gov.uk/womenofsteel and make your own donation at www.justgiving.com/womenofsteel

SCHUBERT 3 Klavierstücke D946 13 Variations on a theme by Anselm Hüttenbrenner in A minor D576 Andante in A D604 4 Impromptus D935   We are delighted to present one of the world’s great pianists, Steven Osborne. In the last year alone, Steven has been honoured as Instrumentalist of the Year at the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards and chosen as winner of Gramophone magazine’s Instrumental Award. A regular performer at the BBC Proms, Steven’s international schedule has taken him to the Berlin Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Konzerthaus Vienna, Kennedy Center Washington and Carnegie Hall New York.   Steven is presenting a special programme for Music in the Round of wonderfully lyrical pieces from Schubert’s solo piano repertoire, a body of work described by Robert Winter as “the anchor of Schubert’s creative life.“ Tonight’s concert supports the Women of Steel fundraising campaign    to commission a statue by Martin Jennings. “Steven Osborne’s unshowy brilliance, integrity and very wide repertoire have long marked him out, but what now emerges most strongly is the unique magic of his sound combined with a profound musical intelligence.”

SCHUMANN Piano Quartet in E flat Op.47 SCHUBERT Octet in F D803   In their first performance of the season, Ensemble 360 play two outstanding works of the Romantic repertoire. Written in 1842, Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E flat is an invigorating work displaying great subtlety and refinement. Its musical structure is influenced by Beethoven but with passages of sprightliness reminiscent of much of Mendelssohn’s music. Schubert’s Octet of 1824 also owes much to Beethoven, having been commissioned by Count Ferdinand von Troyer as a piece to complement the latter composer’s Septet. By adding a second violin, Schubert created a largely spontaneous, congenial work, with hints of moroseness in common with his other chamber pieces of this period.   Tickets*: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students

Having embraced both classical and jazz piano in his formative years, he has created a style of his own in which both musical languages are fused unconsciously and organically interwoven.   “…along with Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, he’s one of the greatest jazz pianists of his generation.” Irish Times   “A pianist with few peers. He possesses rhythmic drive and technique to spare and they’re tied to an intensely personal lyricism. MOZART Violin Sonata in E flat K380 (arr. clarinet and piano) BARRY Low IRELAND Fantasy-Sonata in E flat   Clarinettist Matthew Hunt and pianist Tim Horton present a programme that affords a wonderful demonstration of the sonorous and virtuosic possibilities of the mellowest of all woodwind instruments. Mozart’s elegant Violin Sonata K380 – described by a contemporary as “rich in new ideas and filled with traces of the author’s great musical genius” – demands subtle nuances of interpretation that make it an ideal vehicle for the clarinet. The lush and lyrical Fantasy-Sonata by John Ireland is a perfect fusion of clarinet and piano writing and is considered by some to be the high point of the composer’s chamber music writing. A candidate for the shortest ever programme note provided by a composer – “It is sometimes high and sometimes low” – Gerald Barry’s Low is a spectacular test of dexterity and an infectiously witty showpiece.   Tickets*: £11 / £7.50 Disabled & Unemployed / Talk £5 Under 18s & Students   Post-concert: Join Tim, Matt and members of Music in the Q&A Round upstairs in Channing Hall for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat about the programme. * Booking for these concerts is subject to an additional transaction fee of 10%. Tuesday 11 November, 12.45pm Upper Chapel Ensemble 360   SAINT-SAËNS Romance Op.67 in E flat for horn and piano VOLKER DAVID KIRCHNER Lamento e Danza d’Orfeo for horn and piano RACHMANINOV Cello Sonata in G minor Op.19   Rachmaninov’s famous second Piano Concerto, in the words of writer and critic Geoffrey Norris, announced the beginning of the composer’s “greatest outpourings of music with characteristically sumptuous harmonies and matchless lyrical inspiration.” Premiered in December 1901 just a few weeks after the Concerto, the Cello Sonata basks in the same luscious Romantic glow, consciously presenting the cello and piano as equal partners. Gemma Rosefield and Tim Horton’s performance of this grandly conceived work is definitely not to be missed. Tim is also joined by Naomi Atherton for two captivating works for French horn. Kirchner finds magical ways of evoking the legendary tale of Orpheus while Saint-Saëns’ Romance is a short ‘song without words’ that offers a wonderful platform for demonstrating the warm sonority of the instrument.   Tickets*: £11 / £7.50 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students Hear music from these concerts at www.musicintheround.co.uk

HAYDN London Trio in G Hob.IV No.3 SAINT-SAËNS Oboe Sonata in D MOZART Flute Quartet in A K.298 FRANCK Piano Quintet in F minor   César Franck’s Piano Quintet is a work of extraordinary passion that is almost entirely out of character with the restrained beauty of the composer’s other work. So brazen was the expressivity that the dedicatee and pianist at the first performance, Camille Saint-Saëns, stormed off the stage at the end of the concert in disgust. The inspiration for the piece is believed to have been Augusta Holmès, a young singer and composer with whom, it is said, the majority of male students and teachers at the Paris Conservatoire were infatuated.

SCHUMANN Violin Sonata in A minor Op.105 BRAHMS Violin Sonata in D minor Op.108   Violinist Benjamin Nabarro and pianist Tim Horton bring together emotionally charged sonatas by two of the heavyweights of the Romantic era. Schumann’s Sonata, written at a time when the composer described himself as being “very angry with certain people”, calls for ‘passionate expression’ from the very first notes and, even in the lighter moments of this eloquent piece, the intensity never wavers. Brahms’ Sonata – his third for violin and piano – has been described as a return to the vivid passions of the composer’s youth, and the dramatic twists and turns of mood ensure that the listener is swept along throughout this grandly conceived work.   Tickets*: £11 / £7.50 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students

Friday 28 November, 7.30pm Crucible Theatre, Studio Gwilym Simcock PIANO Yuri Goloubev DOUBLE BASS

Saturday 29 November, 7.30pm Crucible Theatre, Studio Emma Johnson CLARINET John Lenehan PIANO

A pianist of exceptional and dazzling ability, Gwilym’s music has been acclaimed as engaging, often unexpected, melodically enthralling, complex yet hugely accessible. Gwilym and Yuri met at the end of 2005 and hit it off immediately. Their concerts allow them to navigate an intriguing route through jazz, chamber music and contemporary classical. Their strong classical backgrounds allow them to take experimental risks and incorporate into both jazz standards and their own original pieces free improvisations and excursions into the culture of European music.

Renowned for her persuasive interpretations and for her ability to draw rich and varied tones from her instrument, Emma has proved her mastery in performing the greatest works in the clarinet repertoire and presenting engaging concerts for young musicians.   In partnership with her long-time collaborator John Lenehan, Emma presents a sparkling programme that features at its heart two of the great landmark sonatas of the clarinet repertoire by Brahms and Saint-Saëns, framed by a series of dynamic and irresistible works.   Tickets: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / Talk £5 Under 18s & Students   Post-concert Q&A with Emma Johnson, John Lenehan and Q&A Angus Smith

This extraordinarily demanding piece excites strong emotions from some of the world’s greatest pianists: Alfred Brendel said of its compositional design that it “goes beyond everything that has ever been dared and accomplished in the field of piano sonata composition” and Richard Goode declared that, of all Beethoven’s sonatas, “it is the most adventurous…and certainly the most vicious.” And in a supreme moment of understatement, Beethoven himself stated “it will give pianists something to do.”   Tickets*: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students

SCHUMANN 5 Stücke im Volkston Op.102 BRAHMS Trio in E flat Op.40 for violin, horn and piano BRAHMS Violin Sonata No.2 in A Op.100 SCHUMANN Piano Trio in F Op.80   Our autumn season concludes with a concert celebrating 30 years of Music in the Round that features a glorious combination of music by Schumann and Brahms. All the pieces in this programme take direct or indirect influence from song, and both composers set out to evoke lyrical folk idioms: Schumann with the beguiling melodies of the five pieces in folk style and Brahms through his stated preference for the old-fashioned Waldhorn to be used in his Horn Trio. From simple beginnings, these two great composers weave intricate twists and turns into the music that create an ever-shifting emotional journey that will both surprise and delight.   Tickets*: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students *A transaction fee of £1.50 (£1.00 online) applies to all bookings (excluding cash) for events at the Crucible Studio.
