WELCOME TO OUR SPRING SEASON 2018 Standing at its heart is the return of our weekend festival with resident group, Ensemble 360. Showcasing the complete chamber music of two composers of ravishingly beautiful music – Debussy and Ravel – the festival is presented in collaboration with University of Sheffield Concerts and their French SongMakers’ Weekend. Acclaimed violinist Alina Ibragimova returns with her ensemble, the Chiaroscuro Quartet, followed by consummate folk musician Sam Sweeney and friends. They are all contributing to our ongoing series ‘World of Strings’, presenting string music from across the ages and around the globe. Combined with concerts from Singer-inResidence Roddy Williams, harpist Catrin Finch, the Leonore Piano Trio, Tim Horton and fun events for children and families, we believe we’ve found a great recipe for a fantastic season! BEETHOVEN Violin Sonata in E flat Op.12 No.3 Cello Sonata in D Op.102 No.2 Piano Trio in E flat WoO 38 Piano Trio in D Op.70 No.1 Ghost Beethoven’s Ghost Trio is arguably one of his most evocative pieces. Evidence from his notebook suggests that the slow movement, full of Gothic gloom and extraordinary tension, may originally have been written for the witches in an opera of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The accompanying works offset the dark and sober mood of this movement with an abundance of colour and charm. Beethoven’s Quartet in C minor is a powerful and urgent piece, full of dramatic intensity, while a profound melancholy pervades Schubert’s lyrical Rosamunde. BAUDELAIRE AND THE BASSOON

Friday 9 - Sunday 11 March

The music of Ravel and Debussy is all these things and more. Over one weekend in March, Ensemble 360, Catrin Finch and guests present the complete chamber music of these two radical and inspirational composers as part of our Festival of Chamber Music and Song from France’s Golden Age, presented in collaboration with University of Sheffield Concerts.

Friday 9 March 7.15 - 9pm Crucible Studio Theatre

Featuring CHABRIER L’invitation au voyage BEETHOVEN Adelaide, Op.46 DEBUSSY Cinq Poèmes de Baudelaire DUPARC L’invitation au voyage WAGNER Selections from Tannhäuser HECTOR BERLIOZ La Captive, H.60 with works by FRANCK, WEBER, DUTILLEUX and SERGE GAINSBOURG

Ensemble 360’s ‘bassoonist in a million’ Amy Harman is joined by Louise Alder, ‘the brightest lyric soprano of the younger generation’ and winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017 Audience Prize, and pianist in a ‘class of his own’ James Baillieu. This evening’s concert celebrates the mid-19th century French poet Charles Baudelaire, an enormously important figure in both modern literature and art, and the composers he admired and influenced. 13

See pages 24 -26 for booking and venue information

This concert presents Debussy and Ravel at the opposite ends of their careers. Debussy’s Trio is the work of a young man yet to find a personal voice, but it is effortlessly sweet and charming. In contrast, Ravel’s Violin Sonata hints at the composer’s discovery and love of American jazz. Ravel’s only string quartet was much admired by Debussy, and while perceived as progressive and modern, Ravel considered it firmly rooted in classical tradition.

Dr Charlotte de Mille, Music Curator at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, and Tim Horton (piano) discuss Impressionism in relation to art and music. With pictorial and musical illustrations. 15

GILLIAN KEITH Soprano SIMON LEPPER Piano At 18, Debussy fell in love with Marie-Blanche Vasnier, a captivating society lady with the voice of an angel. This green-eyed muse sang her way into his heart, inspiring a period of happiness, creativity, and selfdiscovery. Award-winning duo Gillian Keith and Simon Lepper perform Debussy’s ravishing songs, interwoven seamlessly into readings of extracts from diaries, letters and essays.

Energy and vitality counteract a degree of poignancy in this concert. Debussy’s Violin Sonata was the composer’s last completed work and the premiere in 1917 was his final performance. It’s a restless piece with the “breathlessness of a mortally wounded bird, which has a beauty and pathos of its own.”* Ravel’s Violin and Cello Sonata was dedicated to the memory of Debussy and its relentless drive makes it an arresting homage.

AILISH TYNAN Soprano SIMON LEPPER Piano Celebrated soprano Ailish Tynan partners with pianist Simon Lepper to conclude our French weekend. The carafe jealous of a giraffe, the Queen of Hearts’ strange icy domain, and the adventures of a flea, an elephant and a pot of jam… Poulenc’s delightful, charming, nonsensical and surreal ‘La Courte Paille’ inspires this programme exploring the voice of children in French song.

Schubert’s piano mastery takes the spotlight once more in the second of Tim Horton’s concerts devoted to the composer. The evening also demonstrates Schubert’s influence on succeeding generations: Liszt’s fiendishly challenging B minor Sonata is one clear example; while Schoenberg’s exquisite miniatures also owe a clear debt to Schubert’s Romantic style. The Sonata in G begins with a serene and seemingly never-ending melody and ends with a finale infused with upbeat Austrian folk melodies.
