It has been an extraordinary year of wonderful concerts by Ensemble 360 and our visiting artists, topped off with our success at the annual Royal Philharmonic Society Awards. We are determined that there will be no slackening of the pace in our Autumn series. The Ensemble present wonderful concerts that, as ever, feature pillars of the repertoire (Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelssohn), celebrate anniversaries (Lutoslawki and Wagner), and embrace other composers that always demand to be heard (Weber, Barber, Poulenc and more). They will also be joined by the acclaimed author Marina Lewycka for a special exploration of why music is such a compelling international language. There is much more. As Tim Horton continues his magnificent Beethoven Piano Sonata series, we are thrilled to launch a complete three-year cycle of the composer’s String Quartets with the Elias String Quartet – we welcome them home! Peter Hill presents a spellbinding recital programme that demonstrates precisely why his concerts are such a draw all over the word.
We are also delighted to introduce the Arcadia Quartet from Romania, winners of the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, and we round off the season with a Christmas concert that combines historic and living traditions. The superbly entertaining City Musick and The Festival of Village Carols will propel us headlong towards a great Sheffield Christmas.
Artistic Director
Look out as well for a bumper season of concerts by and for young musicians, and for participation events for enthusiasts of all ages – personally I can’t wait for Paul Rissmann’s Stan and Mabel with the full Ensemble 360 team and the ‘Lads, Dads and Grandads’ vocal workshop! Though we say it ourselves, these imaginatively conceived activities are a perfect demonstration of why our Music in the Community programme is envied and admired by music presenters and audiences throughout the country.

Thursday 10 October, 7.30pm Ensemble 360 Crucible Studio LUTOSLAWSKI Dance Preludes for wind quintet, violin, viola, cello and double bass WAGNER Siegfried Idyll for string quintet & wind quintet BRAHMS Serenade in D Op.11 for string quintet & wind quintet This concert includes a rare opportunity to hear Brahms’s beautiful Serenade Op.11 as it was originally conceived, for ten instruments, before he reworked it for orchestra. Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll must be one of the most exquisite musical gifts ever composed: it was first performed on the stairs of Wagner’s house on Christmas morning 1869, as a birthday present for his wife Cosima. Lutoslawski’s ebullient Dance Preludes are inspired by the folk music of Poland. Tickets*: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students * A transaction fee applies to all bookings made at the Box Office (excluding cash) of £1.50 (£1.00 to online bookings)
Audience Recommendation
:
“Wagner Can you imagine a more romantic present for your beloved than this? Cosima being woken up early on Christmas morning by the strains of this Idyll, played by musicians lined up on the stairs, having been secretly let into her home Both the concept and the sound are just beautiful!”

After the concert Marina Lewycka will be available to sign books in the foyer.
Thursday 17 October, 7.30pm Ensemble 360 & Marina Lewycka Conversation Pieces Crucible Studio BACH Sonata in E flat BWV1031 for oboe and continuo PROKOFIEV Five Mélodies Op.35bis for violin and piano POULENC Trio for oboe, bassoon and piano SZYMANOWSKI Nocturne and Tarantella for violin and piano CHOPIN Piano Trio in G minor Op.8 Ensemble 360 play a sequence of pieces that touch on the family background and musical experiences of one of the UK’s favourite novelists, Marina Lewycka. During the concert, ensemble members will discuss with Marina the importance of her Ukrainian heritage and exchange thoughts on the nature of performing and listening to chamber music. Ranging across three centuries, the music in tonight’s programme moves from the elegance of Bach to the liveliness of Poulenc’s Trio, and the Romantic yearning of Chopin’s early Piano Trio. Prokofiev’s Five Mélodies began as wordless songs for the Ukrainian soprano Nina Koshetz, but Prokofiev quickly made a virtuoso arrangement of them for the Polish violinist Paul Kochanski. Written four years before his famous Adagio for Strings, it demonstrates his fresh and refined kind of American Romanticism. Tickets*: £11 / £7.50 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students * A transaction fee applies to all bookings made at the Box Office (excluding cash) of £1.50 (£1.00 to online bookings)

Tuesday 22 October, 12.45pm Ensemble 360 Upper Chapel BRITTEN Temporal Variations for oboe and piano SAINT-SAËNS Romance in F Op.36 for horn and piano CHOPIN Nocturne Op.62 No.2 HERZOGENBERG Trio in D Op.61 for oboe, horn and piano Britten wrote several pieces for the oboe and the Temporal Variations – often dark and spiky – were composed in 1936, when Europe was fast approaching war. Saint-Saëns wrote his Romance in 1874. Rather than showing off the instrument, it’s an elegant “song without words”, as is Chopin’s Nocturne. Heinrich von Herzogenberg was a friend of Brahms and his Trio is both rustic and delightful. Tickets*: £11 / £7.50 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students * All tickets booked for Upper Chapel concerts are subject to a 10% transaction fee on all payment methods. Online bookings are subject to an additional £1 booking fee.
Musician’s Recommendation. Adrian Wilson, Oboe.
“Britten’s pacifist views were well known and his personal fear of the impending rise to power of the Nazis is very much in evidence in his Temporal Variations It’s such a powerfully declamatory work from a composer who was still only in his early twenties ”

Thursday 7 November, 12.45pm Ensemble 360 Upper Chapel MOZART Trio in F K13 for flute, cello and piano VILLA-LOBOS Jet Whistle for flute and cello WEBER Trio Op.63 for flute, cello and piano Flute, cello and piano come together in a programme of music by the child Mozart, Weber –another child prodigy related to Mozart by marriage – and Brazil’s most important composer, Villa-Lobos. Mozart wrote his delightful Trio in F when he was only eight years old, during a visit to London in 1764. Weber’s Trio is from later in his short career; its elegant charm is very different from the Gothic drama of his operas. Villa-Lobos was a prolific composer with deep roots in Brazilian folklore and a brilliant experimenter: Jet Whistle is the effect used in the piece that conjures up the sound of a plane flying overhead. BEETHOVEN Quartet in F Op.18 No.1 Quintet in C Op.29 Quartet in A minor Op.132 The Elias Quartet returns to Sheffield for the first in a series of six concerts featuring all of Beethoven’s String Quartets. This programme is a magnificent celebration of Beethoven that embraces both the beginning and the end of his career. The early Op.18 No.1 has a slow movement evoking the tomb scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, while the String Quintet Op.29, with its exciting finale, dates from the same period. Op.132 is one of his most profound late quartets. At its heart lies the deeply moving ‘Heilige Dankgesang’ (‘Holy Song of Thanksgiving’), framed by four shorter movements, an inspiration to T.S. Eliot for his Four Quartets. Post-concert Q&A - Your chance to ask questions to the Elias Quartet. Tickets*: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students www.beethovenproject.co.uk

Thursday 5 December, 7.30pm Ensemble 360 Crucible Studio BRAHMS String Quartet in A minor Op.51 No.2 DVOŘÁK Piano Quintet in A Op.81 This programme brings together two great chamber works from the later part of the nineteenth century written by two friends: Brahms’s melancholy and expressive Quartet in A minor was one of a pair written in the summer of 1873 after he had destroyed many earlier attempts to write a string quartet. The last movement is based on a traditional Hungarian folk dance. Dvořák’s wonderfully melodic Piano Quintet of 1887 also draws on folk music, particularly in the sparkling third movement. Tickets*: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students Sponsored by MCRG Ltd.

Tuesday 19 November, 7.30pm Ensemble 360 Firth Hall BRITTEN Quartet No.1 Op.25 HOWELLS Fantasy Quartet Op.25 BRITTEN Three Divertimenti DEBUSSY Quartet in G Op.10 The Debussy Quartet is a landmark work of the quartet literature - an intricate tapestry of colour and timbre, obsessive figures, Javanese gamelan-inspired pizzicato passages and modal harmonies. Britten’s light and bright Three Divertimenti subtitled ‘Go play, boy, play’ were inspired by the 1931 film Emil and the Detectives. The Quartet No.1 of 1941 is the most classical of Britten’s three officially numbered quartets and contrasts vigorous dance-like rhythms with moments of fresh lyricism. Although mostly remembered for his church music Howells composed a number of instrumental works early on in his career. The influence of folk music is dominant in the sumptuous Fantasy Quartet, immediately recognisable by the violin motif heard in the opening bars. transformations At this year’s May Festival Music in the Round celebrated the centenaries of Benjamin Britten’s birth and the discovery of stainless steel with a live chamber music and film event at the Showroom Cinema. The concert was a sell out with an additional 655 people watching online across 22 countries. This November, in celebration of Britten’s birth and due to popular demand, we will re-broadcast the concert on our website before elements of the programme embark on a UK tour.
