Welcome!

Although I have retired from Music in the Round as Artistic Director, I had already programmed the Autumn and Spring series, as we have to engage our performers a long time in advance. Now that we are safely back in the Studio the concerts this autumn are designed to continue our journey of exploration, by discovering new repertoire as well as visiting old favourites. Perhaps the highlight of this Autumn is the weekend of Chopin and Schumann. There is so much of their music to discover as well as the most famous and familiar works. We also welcome first time guests as well as inviting back some of our most revered friends. In fact you could say we are back to normal having weathered the storm, but I hope we don’t quite have a ‘normal’. Thank you all, once again, for your wonderful support. Artistic Director

Please note that Peter Cropper will leave Music in the Round as Artistic Director at the end of July after twenty-five years. He will be back to perform in October (see page 6) and he has programmed the upcoming Autumn and Spring series. Angus Smith becomes the new Artistic Director of Music in the Round on the 1st August 2010 and his first programme will be the Autumn Series 2011.

Ensemble 360

Ensemble 360 is Music in the Round’s resident ensemble. It brings together eleven world-class musicians to form one versatile group; five string players, five wind players and a pianist. The enthusiasm, drive and musicality of each of the performers has proved a success with audiences across the UK as they find themselves drawn into the performances both through the communicative and engrossing nature of their playing. Ensemble 360 is a strong team and a group of friends who share a passion for the music; a passion which radiates through each performance.

Ensemble 360

Ensemble 360 opens the Autumn Series with Haydn’s unjustly neglected Piano Trio in D minor, followed by the serene, almost dream-like Bassoon Sonata by Saint-Saëns. The group returns to the music of Huw Watkins with his dramatic Trio, a piece Benjamin Nabarro premièred last year with the Nash Ensemble. Brahms’s Piano Quintet opens with restraint and tenderness but soon erupts into an energetic piece full of vitality, and features what is considered to be one of the most exciting conclusions ever written in chamber music.

Exploring Chopin and Schumann Ensemble 360 celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of two great composers: Chopin and Schumann with a weekend of concerts. Exploring Chopin and Schumann’

Ensemble 360 performs Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces, or Fantasiestucke, for piano trio and for clarinet and piano. Both explore contrasting moods; tender and expressive, light and playful, fiery and passionate. Chopin wrote this, his only piano trio before he was twenty years old, infusing the piece with a sense of youthful exuberance. The tone of Schumann’s Piano Trio in D minor greatly contrasts that of its companion trio, which can be heard on Saturday evening; where the D minor is expressive and somewhat tragic, the Trio in F is sunny and joyful. page 12

Exploring Chopin and Schumann

The Märchenerzählungenor ‘Fairytales’, a cycle of miniatures with a nostalgic and introspective feel, was written when Schumann befriended Brahms, a creative and happy time for him despite poor health. Chopin’s last major works, including this Cello Sonata and the Barcarolle (which can be heard on Sunday afternoon) showed a development of his usual style; the Cello Sonata is a passionate and strikingly original piece. It took him an unusually long time to write, discarding many attempts at the piece, and his frustration is reflected in its anguished tone.

Exploring Chopin and Schumann

Schumann’s Violin Sonata is considered to be one of his greatest late works. It opens with restlessness and passion before moving on to the serenity of the second movement and the energetic and agitated third. Chopin’s waltzes are known for their encapsulation of grace SCHUMANN and charm. The exuberant Minute Waltz, the Sonata for Violin & Piano first of the Op.64 set, is one of the most famous in A minor Op.105 pieces in the piano repertoire. Schumann’s Piano Trio in F was written as a companion piece to Schumann’s Op.63, which can be heard on Friday evening. It is a piece full of youthfulness, joy and passion.

Exploring Chopin and Schumann’

Schumann’s songs are reminiscent of his Romances, (which can be heard on Saturday evening), especially in this incarnation for oboe and piano. When most people think of a barcarolle, this one by Chopin immediately springs to mind. The lyrical theme is heard over a lilting rhythm, as if sailing on water, evoking songs sung by Venetian gondaliers. The Piano Quintet was the crowning work of Schumann’s so-called ‘chamber music year’. The piece, which became a model for future composers, enjoyed immediate success and was SCHUMANN performed often by his Songs for Oboe & Piano wife Clara. Schumann’s Kinderszenen was his first piano cycle to achieve commercial success. It is not a piece for children as the title suggests but is instead “reflections of an adult for other adults”, a nostalgic look at childhood. Hindemith wrote a sonata for nearly every orchestral instrument, including this Horn Sonata and a Bassoon Sonata, which can be heard on Saturday 11 December. Each is carefully written to suit the character and qualities of the instrument. In the case of the Horn Sonata this writing features broad, soaring melodies. The Thun Sonata is so nicknamed because Brahms wrote it whilst in the town of the same name in Switzerland. He wrote that Thun was “so full of melodies that one has to be careful not to step on any”. It is indeed a piece full of passionate and expressive tunes.

In Stan Tracey’s hands the octet has all the power and vitality of a much bigger band Jazzwise

Sheff ield Jazz: Stan Tracey Octet An outstanding figure of British jazz, Stan Tracey’s hugely influential career has spanned five decades. As house pianist at Ronnie Scott’s in the ’60s he played with all the visiting American greats – Sonny Rollins said “Does anybody here know how good he really is?” His brilliantly idiosyncratic piano style combines the percussive melody of Monk with the robust lyricism of Ellington. Tonight’s concert sees his fantastic new octet perform The Hong Kong Suite - commissioned by Governor Lord Pattern to mark the British handover back to China in 1997 and the Amandla Suite commissioned in 1993 by the unions that merged to form UNISON - “Amandla” is a Zulu word that became associated with the anti-apartheid movement. Prazak Quartet

The Prazák Quartet is one of today’s leading international string quartets and has performed worldwide for over thirty years. Here they perform two works from their Czech homeland alongside Haydn’s Emperor Quartet, one of his most popular string quartets. The theme is a touching hymn written for Haydn’s Emperor, hence the work’s nickname. Considered to be one of the great string quartets of the º twentieth century, Martinu’s sixth quartet has a rhythmic vitality and drive, yet is also incredibly expressive. When Dvorák came to write his Quartet in E flat he had recently written his popular Slavonic Dances, and was under pressure to write something similarly lively and overtly nationalistic. Although this quartet has a HAYDN Slavonic feel and features Quartet in C Op.76 No.3 Czech dance rhythms, it also Emperor has a deep sonority and richness in texture.

Referred to as his Sun Quartets, Haydn’s Op.20 was a milestone in the composer’s career, the point at which he showed full maturity in string quartet writing. His compelling Quartet in D is forward-looking, with clear influences from gypsy music. Written in the year of his death, Intimate Letters was Janácek’s last chamber work. It depicts the close bond he shared with Kamila Stösslová, to whom he wrote numerous letters, in one of which he declared that Intimate Letters was written in fire, where previous pieces had been “written only in hot ash”. Indeed the piece is full of fiery passion and drama, contrasted by moments of tender intimacy. HAYDN Quartet in D Op.20 No.4

Exploring Chopin and Schumann: Benjamin Frith Continuing our celebration of the music of Chopin on the 200th anniversary of his birth, Benjamin Frith performs some of the music that Chopin was loved for above all else: piano music. Although this was his best-known genre, Chopin only wrote four piano sonatas. The majority of his output for piano was miniatures such as preludes, mazurkas, and polonaises, some favourite examples of which are heard here. Dances from his Polish homeland influenced many of Chopin’s compositions: both the mazurka and the polonaise are Polish dances. His famous Op.53 Polonaise is a virtuosic and heroic piece, hence its nickname.

Carducci Quartet

The Carducci Quartet is widely recognised as one of today’s most talented young string quartets. Here the group performs Mozart’s Hunt Quartet, so named because of the opening theme that suggests a huntsman’s horn. It is one of a series of six quartets that Mozart dedicated to Haydn whose musical influence is apparent. E J Moeran’s Irish roots greatly influenced his music, as did landscape and folk song. These influences are apparent in this pastoral piece which is thought to have been written early in his career, though it was not found until after his death. MOZART Philip Glass is one of the most Quartet in B flat commercially successful composers alive K.458 The Hunt today.
