Welcome!

This is my farewell series of concerts for Music in the Round as Artistic Director. I hope you will enjoy the variety of concerts given by new artists to Sheffield who I have met on my recent travels, mixed with returning performers many of whom are now firm favourites. It was twenty-seven years ago that we started with a fortnights’ festival of chamber music in the Crucible Studio. Little did we know then that we would now be arranging over 150 concerts, plus education projects, all over England. All this is possible because we have a totally dedicated team in the office and a wonderfully supportive group of board members. Their enthusiasm and hard work is motivated by their admiration of our resident Ensemble 360. These eleven outstanding players are not only performing in Sheffield and South Yorkshire, but making a name as a group nationally and as individuals, internationally. Their recordings are receiving rave reviews and their commitment to Sheffield and the promotion of chamber music through Music in the Round will make a lasting impact on all our musical lives. I am thrilled to have been part of this development and thank you all for your undying support over the last quarter of a century. I hope Angus Smith, my successor, enjoys the challenge as much as I have and I know that Music in the Round will go from strength to strength with the passion that everyone involved shares with you the audience.

Ensemble 360

Ensemble 360 is Music in the Round’s resident ensemble. It brings together eleven world-class musicians to form one versatile group; five string players, five wind players and a pianist. The enthusiasm, drive and musicality of each of the performers has proved a success with audiences across the UK as they find themselves drawn into the performances both through the communicative and engrossing nature of their playing. Ensemble 360 is a strong team and a group of friends who share a passion for the music; a passion which radiates through each performance.

Elias String Quartet BBC New Generation Artists and BBC Music Magazine Newcomer of the Year 2010, the Elias String Quartet returns to the Studio for this special weekend of concerts with Ensemble 360. Beethoven’s Op.18 quartets shows him both mastering the styles of his predecessors, Haydn and Mozart, whilst pushing musical boundaries into new territory; these quartets couldn’t have been written by any other composer than Beethoven. Like most of Bartók’s music this short third quartet owes a great deal to folk melodies. It is a thrilling piece brimming with musical effects. Beethoven’s Quartet in C was dedicated to Russian ambassador Count Rasumovsky. Along with his well-loved Eroica Symphony, it embodies a sense of heroism. Viennese audiences of the time loved the piece, BEETHOVEN enhancing Beethoven’s fame across Europe. Quartet in F Op.18 No. 1 Tickets: £14 / £9.50

Ensemble 360

Taking the lead from Beethoven’s use of Russian folk tunes in his Rasumovsky quartets Ensemble 360 showcases some of the greatest chamber music of that nation, interspersed with one of Beethoven’s own early masterpieces. Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale dates from 1918, but he made this arrangement in 1919 for the financier Werner Reinhardt, an amateur clarinetist who had funded the original production. Beethoven’s Op.1 Piano Trios are a great statement of the young composer’s intent. They combine elements of his indebtedness to Haydn and Mozart, but more importantly show the new path that he would follow. Stravinsky’s Septet was written shortly after he had completed his opera The Rake’s Progress. It is one of his final pieces in the neo-classical style, looking back to the musical forms of the 18th century, before he adopted Schoenberg’s serial techniques. It is full of joy and is rhythmically puzzling for players and audience alike! Rachmaninov’s second Trio Élégiaque is a heartfelt homage to his idol, Tchaikovsky, on whose own Piano Trio it is closely modelled, structurally as well as emotionally. It contains all of Rachmaninov’s trademark melodic ingenuity and passion.

Bach is thought to have written his Goldberg Variations as a gift to Count Kayserling, an important and influential music-lover who suffered from insomnia. The Count had employed one of Bach’s best pupils, the fourteen-year-old Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, to play to him during his sleepless nights. The theme is a dance-like aria written earlier by Bach for his wife, but it is the bass line and chords that Bach uses for his thirty variations. In this wonderfully virtuosic and challenging transcription for string trio, the three players are equal partners, as if creating the different registers of a single instrument.

Danish String Quartet We’re delighted to welcome the Danish String Quartet as part of its debut tour following huge success at the 2009 London International String Quartet Competition, where it won five of the nine prizes, including First Prize. The Quartet is already renowned for its powerful impact on stage generated by the players’ sheer joy of performing and their fresh approach to repertoire. Here the Danish performs Mozart’s famous Dissonance Quartet, which takes its nickname from the tense harmonies that open the piece, something that was radical for the time. The energetic and dramatic Quartet in G minor is considered to be the milestone at which Nielsen reached his prime as a string quartet composer. In Beethoven’s late, great Quartet in E flat each part has equal importance, MOZART creating a totally new sound world to that Quartet in C K.465 of his previous quartets. Dissonance

Alexandra Dariescu

Alexandra returns to Sheffield following her hugely successful lunchtime concert with us in October 2009. Here she performs a varied programme of virtuosic and lyrical pieces. BEETHOVEN Beethoven’s virtuosic variations explore 32 Variations on an Original Theme in many different textures, rhythms, C minor dynamics and moods. Another set of variations, Schumann’s Op.1, reflects his fascination with puzzles. Based on the letters in the surname of the piece’s dedicatee, Meta Abegg, it displays a thrilling concoction of styles. Wagner’s dramatic Isolde’s Liebestod comes from the end of his masterpiece opera Tristan & Isolde, when Isolde grieves over the body of her love. Liszt’s transcription wonderfully captures the passion and heartwrenching emotion of the aria.

All classically trained musicians, the trio boasts an eclectic background: Donald has performed here in Sheffield with folk legends Kate Rusby, Martin Simpson and Roy Bailey and is also part of the internationally acclaimed Elias String Quartet, now BBC New Generation Artists. Eilidh comes from a family of folk musicians and has published her own book of Scottish traditional tunes. Phil is known through Klezmer/Balkan band Moishe’s Bagel, who played to a packed Studio in 2007, as well as the Eliza Carthy band and Salsa Celtica.

Quite extraordinarily beautiful and right The Times

Book Two of Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier shows the composer at his most visionary, exploring harmonies that would not be out of place in Wagner, Mahler or even early Schoenberg, keyboard writing as rich as Brahms in his last years, and most of all an argumentative power that is a pre-echo of Beethoven. But there is a lighter side: preludes that dance and shimmer with the grace of the later 18th century, wit and irony that only Haydn could rival. As a foil to excerpts from the Well Tempered Clavier, the French Suite in D minor is Bach’s take on the dance forms of his time; playful, elegant, and deceptively simple. Peter Hill is preparing a series of Bach recordings for Delphian Records.

Ensemble 360 Desert Island Concert

“On my own on a desert island I would find consolation in traditional and folkloric music from all over Europe, and in Schumann, one of my favourite composers. My parents used to put his third piano trio on at home to calm down their four exhausting kids ... I can’t remember if it worked but it stayed deeply in my memory. I chose Dohnányi’s Serenade because of these words from Bartók: “you could resume Hungarian music with one person, Dohnányi”, is very close to the traditional music of Hungary. Nathanel Malnoury is a close friend of mine, and it’s a real pleasure to play this piece. He wrote it for me in 2004, and it is made up of two movements based on Irish themes and is quite ... rock ‘n’ roll! MALNOURY I’m proud to share the piano stool with Tim for Piece for double bass Mother Goose, which is not a pure homage to France, and viola rather an immersion in an oriental and enchanting world. Beethoven’s Variations on Rule Britannia seem to display more than a little irony towards the theme. Any elements of potential pomposity in the theme are roundly and humorously satirised.

Temporal Variations can be seen as vision for peace at a time when political anxiety in Europe was keenly felt by pacifists such as Britten. It includes the nationalistic dance movements of Germany (waltz) and Poland (polka), the march and yard exercises of the soldiers and an oration that evokes a dictatorial speech! It is one of the most powerful and poignant pieces of chamber music written in the 20th century. Charles Koechlin was a hugely prolific composer, with pieces as diverse as chamber music and BEETHOVEN Hollywood film scores. He loved 5 Variations on Rule the romanticism of Chopin and Britannia in D Fauré and was great friends with BRITTEN Ravel. He was also Cole Porter’s Temporal Variations teacher and a great supporter for oboe and piano of new music within France. Jin Ju

Jin Ju makes a very welcome return to Music in the Round following her concert with us in December 2008. Debussy’s witty Etudes were dedicated to the memory of Chopin, and have a charm reminiscent of the older composer’s work. They explore the piano’s contrasting sonorities and timbres, and are some of Debussy’s greatest late music. Stravinsky’s brief and lively Sonata contains influences of the baroque, classical and early romantic periods. It opens by recalling the sound world of Haydn, and the lyricism and ornamentation of the second movement echoes Bach, whose spirit in the final movement is recalled by an agile and quirky two-part invention.

Gumboots by David Bruce was composed in 2008 to a commission from Carnegie Hall. Its title refers to gumboot dancing, which developed out of a form of communication used by black miners during apartheid in South Africa in which they would slap the chains that connected them together. This eventually evolved into a lively form of dance. The only piece of Brahms’ to exist in two different pieces is this Trio. He revised the piece towards the end of his life but against type (he was notoriously selfcritical) allowed the earlier version to continue to be published. The revision turns the piece into a mature masterpiece, so much so that the earlier version is now rarely performed.
