EVERYONE IS WELCOME at a Music in the Round concert. There is no dress code, no big stage to keep the performers at a distance, nothing you need to know about the music in advance. Just outstanding musicians in the centre of the room, surrounded by the audience, introducing and performing a rich variety of exciting, moving and thought-provoking music. What Sheffield audiences tell us they value most about hearing music ‘in the round’ is the uniquely intimate, informal and inspiring musical experiences it provides. We hope you will join us.

“Music in the Round’s Studio probably ranks as the finest chamber music venue in the UK”

www.sceneandheard-international.com

Our Artistic Director, Angus Smith, introduces the Autumn season: I am really proud to present our Autumn programme in Sheffield, embracing as it does an incredible range of talent and exciting music.

As ever, the music on offer includes acknowledged masterpieces by many of the greatest composers of classical music set beside less familiar pieces that also demand to be heard. We are especially delighted to host the 10th birthday concert of our resident group, Ensemble 360. As a tribute to our founding Artistic Director, the violinist Peter Cropper, who died very suddenly in May, we’re presenting two concerts devised by him in anticipation of his 70th birthday. We are deeply saddened at his passing, but feel sure that he would approve of us continuing to offer this wonderful music in celebration of a life well-lived. Many of this season’s musicians, including the members of Ensemble 360, regularly feature on the grandest international stages and I am looking forward with immense anticipation to hearing them close up in performances that I believe will be the match of anything that can be heard around the world. All of us at Music in the Round and in Ensemble 360 regard our audience as an essential part of what we do; it is you who give our concerts life. I hope to see you soon.

Angus Smith, Artistic Director

ensemble 360 Celebrating 10 years since their formation in 2005

Resident in South Yorkshire with Music in the Round, Ensemble 360 brings together world-class musicians to form one versatile group. They are: Claudia Ajmone-Marsan VIOLIN / Naomi Atherton HORN / Juliette Bausor FLUTE / Laurène Durantel DOUBLE BASS / Ruth Gibson VIOLA / Amy Harman BASSOON / Matthew Hunt CLARINET / Tim Horton PIANO / Benjamin Nabarro VIOLIN / Gemma Rosefield CELLO / Adrian Wilson OBOE / Here pianist Tim Horton looks back at the Ensemble’s first 10 years:

“Looking back, the last decade seems to have passed extraordinarily quickly. I feel immensely proud to have been part of Ensemble 360 for these years. It was a characteristically brave decision by Peter Cropper to install an 11-member “protoorchestra” as Ensemble-in-Residence at Music in the Round and we like to feel that decision has paid off! He was so proud of how we had grown over the years as individual musicians and as an ensemble and we owe him more than we could ever tell him. Players who have since left have all gone on to great things and we are delighted to have a complete Ensemble again with the appointment of violist Ruth Gibson. We feel that this is one of the richest programmes we have ever put together, with various threads that will be followed in subsequent years. We hope that you will be as engrossed by listening to this extraordinary music as we will be by playing it”

Saturday 26 September, 6.15pm Crucible Theatre, Studio Ensemble 360 in conversation

This year, the BBC extends its incredibly successful Ten Pieces project to secondary schools. Today’s INSET session is for teachers and practitioners to gather inspiration and ideas as they begin exploring these ten great works. Composer and animateur Andrew Smith (who’s been commissioned by the BBC to arrange the Ten Pieces for diverse instruments) will dissect compositional techniques within the repertoire and demonstrate how they can be used as a starting point for students’ own creative responses.   Resources will be available on the day and from www.bbc. co.uk/tenpieces throughout the project, while Music in the Round and our partners will continue to support schools as they develop their individual Ten Pieces projects. FREE to attend. Groups are welcome. Anyone who plays an instrument is invited to bring it! Book with fraser@ musicintheround.co.uk / 0114 281 4660 In partnership with South Yorkshire Music Hubs

HAYDN Quartet in D minor Op.103 BEETHOVEN Quartet in F Op.18 No.1 JOSQUIN DESPREZ Two Chansons BARTÓK Quartet No.4 in C   The Marmen Quartet were appointed to Music in the Round’s ‘Bridge’ development scheme , to support a young quartet with particular promise through the early stages of their career, in Spring this year, and this concert is their first full-length programme in the Studio.   The Quartet write: ‘This programme presents remarkable individual pieces, and explores their connections. Haydn’s influence on Beethoven is known, but what about Beethoven’s influence on Haydn in his last years? And how are old and new music linked? Josquin Desprez, a master of the early Renaissance, has often been likened to Beethoven for his ingenuity, creativity and artistic personality. We feel his music will create a potent atmosphere for Bartók’s 4th string quartet, which draws strongly on 16th century techniques. Bartók marries these with his trademark folk music influences, and we believe the work that emerges is one of the great string quartets of the 20th century.’   Tickets* £17.50 / £12 Disabled and Unemployed / £5 Under 35s and Students   Talk ‘In Conversation’ with the Marmen Quartet 6.15pm Pre-concert

CHOPIN Introduction and Polonaise Brillante in C Op.3 TCHAIKOVSKY Nocturne Op.19 No.4 GRIEG Cello Sonata in A Minor Op.36   Gemma Rosefield and Tim Horton present a captivating programme of 19th century works written for, or adapted for cello and piano. Chopin’s Introduction and Polonaise Brillante was composed in 1829 and 1830 and although it was dedicated to the influential Austrian cellist Joseph Merk, the composer indicated that it had been designed for the young Princess Wanda Radziwill, the daughter of his patron Prince Antione Radziwill.   Tchaikovsky’s Nocturne is the composer’s own arrangement of a short lyrical piano piece, but Grieg’s Cello Sonata is written on a grand scale that places this work at the pinnacle of Romantic sonatas written for the instrument. A Norwegian heritage is readily apparent – the piece quotes incidental music Grieg had composed for a play about King Sigurd Jorsalfar and the final movement features lively local folk music.    Tickets*: £11 / £7.50 Disabled and Unemployed / £5 Under 35s and Students

UK concert première. CD Release January 2016   Following the success of the BBC Radio 2 award-winning The Full English, Fay Hield moves forward as a leading proponent of traditional songs as she prepares to release a new album, “Old Adam”.   This fresh and original exploration of how we use songs, stories and music to understand what it means to be human combines vision, inspiration, dedication and outstanding musicianship to make this an evening of tender poignancy.   Her longstanding band, The Hurricane Party, expands to include members of The Full English, bringing new arrangements to old songs including fiddle, melodeon, concertina, guitars, percussion and bass. At times sparse and contemplative, at times with a festival stomp, the music is captivating and engaging with plenty of choruses and vibrant interaction with the audience.   Tickets* £17.50 / £12 Disabled and Unemployed / £5 Under 35s and Students for online res, of £1.50 (£1 eatres. MOZART String Quartet in D K.499 Hoffmeister BERG Adagio from Chamber Concerto for violin, clarinet and piano BRAHMS Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op.115   The Clarinet Quintet is one of Brahms’ last works and is considered by some to be his most profound chamber composition. It has an air of melancholy, but is punctuated by moments of wild frenzy, not least in the extraordinary “gypsy” outburst in the slow movement.   The emotional exuberance and technical craftsmanship of Brahms’ Quintet forms a perfect partnership with Berg’s Adagio. . This owes much to both the structural integrity of Brahms’ writing and the harmonic extremes of Wagner, with all three composers believing that formal rigour is essential to revealing the emotional truth of a piece. As Berg wrote in his dedicatory letter to Schoenberg, “I can tell you, dearest friend, that if it became known how much friendship, love, and a world of human and spiritual references I have smuggled into the Chamber Concerto, the adherents of programme music would go mad with joy.”

For children aged 3-5 and their grown-ups Presented by Polly Ives and Ensemble 360 Inspirational hands-on musical workshops in which young children can move, sing, play instruments, and explore music! Workshop leader Polly Ives and her friends from Ensemble 360 Laurène Durantel (double bass) and Claudia Ajmone-Marsan (violin) introduce classical pieces and activities that everyone will enjoy. We’ll do a spider dance with Glière’s Tarantella and discover a magic-wand song by Mozart. Grown-ups can join in the fun, too, making music with their children – an enjoyable morning of musical discovery for everyone.

In their 10-year history, Ensemble 360 have consistently championed modern music and this programme features two of Hungary’s greatest composers, Béla Bartók and György Kurtág. The Third Quartet is one of Bartók’s most significant pieces, revealing an extraordinary mix of effects in a short time-span. It is a natural partner for the music of Kurtág, a composer whose fragmentary writing contains, in the words of Tom Service, “music of unflinching emotional and existential rawness.” Density and beauty are to be found in one of pianist Tim Horton’s favourite 20th century works, Notations by Pierre Boulez – who is 90 this year – and the Ensemble are also delighted to include Huw Watkins’ Piano Trio (2009) in this concert of contemporary masterpieces.

7.20pm Crucible Theatre, Studio Ensemble 360 DVOŘÁK String Quintet in G Op.77 “One of the most entrancing movements in the whole of Dvořák’s chamber music creation.” This is the judgement of Otakar Sourek, a passionate amateur musician who was the founding father of research into the composer’s life and works, of the third movement of this wonderful quintet. It was written in 1875 for a chamber music competition in Prague at which it was praised for its “distinction in theme, technical skill in polyphonic composition, and mastery of form”. Even though it won first prize, Dvořák subsequently made some revisions, most notably omitting an entire movement entitled Andante religioso.

“Contemporary music, especially, is created to wake you up, not put you to sleep. It is meant to stir and excite you, to move you--it may even exhaust you. But isn’t that the kind of stimulation you go to the theater for or read a book for? Why make an exception for music?” Aaron Copland TICKETS FOR EACH CONCERT: £10 / Disabled, Unemployed & Students £5 / children under 18 free. Everyone loves brass instruments! We are delighted to welcome Onyx Brass, one of the finest brass quintets in the world, for our Autumn half term family concert. These superb players are particularly popular with young and new audiences and have given workshops, masterclasses and performances in schools ranging from primaries to the Juilliard!

There will be high-quality playing to listen to, with repertoire by Mozart, Scheidt, Maynard, and Puccini, plus audience participation – so bring your best raspberry-blowing shoes with you!

The INSET session, led by Polly Ives, provides hands-on training and inspiration, and shows how to link the project with the EYFS and KS1 national curriculum. Free resources and a copy of the book are included. COPLAND Duo for flute and piano BARBER Canzone for flute and piano CHOPIN Ballade in A flat No.3 Op.47 for piano DVOŘÁK Sonatina in G Op.100 for flute and piano   Flautist Juliette Bausor’s engaging programme has a distinctively American character. Dvořák’s Sonatina, presented here in an arrangement for flute and piano that the composer made himself, is a work of many influences, including Czech folksong, American Indian song and Negro   spirituals, and the slow movement was directly inspired by Dvořák’s visit to the Minnehaha Falls near St Paul, Minnesota. Dedicated to his children, Dvořák wrote of this attractive piece that “adults should (also) amuse themselves as best they can.” The American flavour continues with flute pieces by Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber. Copland described his work as intended to be “direct in expression and grateful for the performer”, fitting the instrument’s “songful nature”, while Barber’s Canzone is a lyrical ‘song without words’.

A CELEBRATION OF PETER CROPPER 1945-2015

We are proud to present two concerts and a Bring and Play Day marking what would have been the 70th birthday of Music in the Round’s founder, Peter Cropper, who died suddenly in May 2015. The programmes Peter chose reflect his love of playing with friends and the importance of family, and we have left his introductory words to these concerts as he gave them to us. But this is now an opportunity to reflect on the immense impression he made on chamber music worldwide, both as a brilliant performer and as an endlessly passionate advocate for the glorious repertoire that he championed throughout his exceptionally distinguished career.

SCHUBERT Violin Sonata in A minor D.385 Sonatina BRAHMS Violin Sonata in G Op.78   Violinist Benjamin Nabarro and pianist Tim Horton present two of the most compelling violin works of the 19th century. Brahms’ first violin sonata was written shortly after the death of his 24-year old godson, the violinist and poet Felix Schumann. It is a tenderly written piece and it reportedly prompted Clara Schumann to say “I could not help bursting into tears of joy over it…I wish the last movement could accompany me to the next world.” Schubert’s Sonata is an early work with a fullness of grace and charm that disguises the complexity of the harmonic structure.   Tickets*: £11 / £7.50 Disabled and Unemployed / £5 Under 35s and Students

A CYCLE OF THE COMPLETE BEETHOVEN VIOLIN SONATAS, CELLO SONATAS AND PIANO TRIOS Concert 1 (of 8)   BEETHOVEN Cello Sonata in F Op.5 No.1 Violin Sonata in D Op.12 No.1 Piano Trio in E flat Op.1 No.1   We are delighted to launch a new Beethoven cycle featuring the Leonore Trio. Some of you will know the players as members of Ensemble 360, and in this trio line-up they are already emerging as a force on the national and international chamber music platform. As well as presenting concert series at King’s Place in London, they are attracting outstanding reviews for their performances of Russian piano trios recorded for Hyperion records.   Appropriately, this concert features the earliest pieces Beethoven wrote for the instrumental combinations being featured in this new series. Benjamin Nabarro writes: “After Beethoven cycles from both the Elias String Quartet and Tim Horton, we are extremely excited to be continuing the theme with Beethoven’s complete works for piano trio, violin and piano, and cello and piano. These span his whole life, from the three trios he deemed his Op.1 set (the last of which Haydn suggested he shouldn’t publish, saying it was too daring! ), to the cello sonatas Op.102 which mark the start of Beethoven’s ‘late period’, as he struggled with increasing deafness and ailing health. During our journey we will also encounter the Op.70 Ghost Trio that pushes the boundaries of classical style and form, and the Op.47 Kreutzer Sonata, a one-off, dazzling explosion of a piece.”   Tickets* £17.50 / £12 Disabled and Unemployed / £5 Under 35s and Students

“The Leonores play with truly glorious affection and security, and it is hard to imagine playing of a greater empathy.”

HAYDN Piano Sonata in F major, Hob.XVI:23 (MJP) BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata in A major, Op.101 (AK) HAYDN Piano Sonata in E flat major, Hob.XVI:52 (AK) BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata in C minor, Op.111 (MJP)   Maria João Pires is recognised worldwide as one of the finest pianists performing today, renowned especially for the integrity, eloquence, and vitality of her playing. Her concerto partners include numerous leading conductors and orchestras including the LPO, the Concertgebouw, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra this season, but she is also a regular and committed performer of chamber repertoire. This is a very rare chance to hear her perform at such close quarters.   Since 1970 Maria João has dedicated herself to reflecting on the influence of art on life, community and education, and the mentorship of emerging pianists that forms the Partitura project is one aspect of her her engagement with young musicians. We are therefore delighted to welcome the brilliant Armenian pianist Ashot Khachatourian, who will share this recital of wonderful Beethoven and Haydn sonatas.   Tickets* £17.50 / £12 Disabled and Unemployed / Talk£5 Under Talk 35s and Students   Presented in association with PARTITURA and MUSIC CHAPEL

Wednesday 2 December, 7.15pm Crucible Theatre, Studio Ensemble 360   HAYDN Piano Trio in G Hob.XV:25 Gypsy Rondo LIGETI Trio for horn, violin and piano Hommage à Brahms BRAHMS Piano Quartet in G minor Op.25   Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G is one of the grandest and most innovative of all his pieces. The first movement alone contains five thematic groups, while the tempestuous finale ‘alla Zingarese’ is the first movement written in the Hungarian style that Brahms was to return to so often in his career. It is therefore a natural pairing with György Ligeti’s monumental Horn Trio, written in homage to Brahms. Some allusions are made to the folk music of Hungary and the Balkans, but the use of clever devices – for example the natural harmonics of the French Horn to ‘bend’ the tuning – brings a fresh and arresting perspective to a work that has its roots in traditional Romantic structures.   Tickets* £17.50 / £12 Disabled and Unemployed / £5 Under 35s and Students

Formed in 2011 for the Southbank Meltdown Festival, the Sextet concentrates on Mingus’s musical portraits of friends, lovers, political enemies, musicians and one cat, with pieces from the classic ‘Ah Um’ at the core of the repertoire.

“Biscoe’s sparkling arrangements and splendid playing vividly capture Mingus’s sprawling, rumbustious energy, while giving the music a fresh twist” Kenny Mathieson, The Scotsman

HAYDN Piano Trio in C HobXV No.27 MOZART Clarinet Quintet in A K.581 BEETHOVEN Piano Trio in B flat Op.97 Archduke   Extraordinary musicians gather for our second concert in memory of Peter Cropper.   “After 40 years of incredible music making with the Lindsays, I have spent the last ten years (since my 60th) playing and teaching and of course spending more time with the family. Being a grandparent is really amazing. For my second celebratory concert, I have chosen Haydn and Beethoven trios as Martin Roscoe and Moray Welsh have shared the most significant part of my present performing life. Those two composers have also been crucial to the history of Music in the Round and my passion for chamber music. I also wanted to reminisce, so I decided to invite Janet and Louise, who were always so supportive to the Quartet, to share with my son Mart and Moray the Mozart Clarinet Quintet which Janet and I first played together 45 years ago.” Peter Cropper   Tickets* £17.50 / £12 Disabled and Unemployed / £5 Under 35s and Students
