These sonatas by French composers Francis Poulenc and Camille SaintSaëns are glorious pillars of the solo oboe repertoire, here beautifully complemented by oboe pieces from two of the 20th century’s greatest English composers. While SaintSaëns’ piece pays fond respects to the traditions of classical sonatas from an earlier era, Poulenc’s work has a dark and hauntingly beautiful tone.

Lars first rose to prominence at the 1990 Leeds International Piano Competition and has gone on to give major concerto and recital performances with many of the world’s greatest orchestras, including the Berlin, Vienna, New York and London Philharmonic orchestras. Featuring Beethoven’s famous Appassionata Sonata, Janácek’s stunning In the Mists cycle and (a personal passion of Lars) the music of Brahms, this promises to be a truly spellbinding event!

According to the great German violinist Joseph Joachim who premiered the piece, Schumann’s Second Sonata “overflows with noble passion and the last movement reminds one of the sea with its glorious waves of sound”.

Schumann’s hugely popular song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben is today regarded as a pivotal work in the soprano repertoire. The words, with a female narrator at their heart, focus exclusively on a woman’s experience of love. And yet, the poems were written by male German poet and botanist Adelbert von Chamisso, and the first public performance, with Robert Schumann’s wife Clara at the piano, was given by a baritone, Julius Stockhausen. Our Singer-in-Residence, Roderick Williams, challenges himself to come to terms with shifting perspectives in the performance and understanding of music, presented in a thought-provoking evening of mesmerising music featuring a new work by Ryan Wigglesworth. From Wincobank, Sheffield, Ryan has come a long way since he was a chorister at Sheffield Cathedral! He is one of the foremost composer-conductors of his generation, having been Principal Guest Conductor of The Hallé from 2015 to 2018 and Composer-in-Residence at English National Opera. Yevgeny Sudbin was born in St Petersburg, then emigrated to Germany with his family, before settling in London in 1997 to study at the Purcell School and Royal Academy of Music. Rave reviews, international recitals and numerous awards have followed, all pointing to his outstanding virtuosity combined with rare sensitivity and insight. Yevgeny’s varied and dynamic programme is a showcase for both his championing of the delicate baroque compositions of Scarlatti and the crafting of his own showstopping arrangements, which recall the recitals of the legendary Russian-American pianist Vladimir Horowitz.

EVENING CONCERT The Piatti Quartet first came to Sheffield fresh out of music college and won over the audience with its magnificent performance. Six years later, the Quartet has toured the world, won distinguished prizes at Wigmore Hall’s International String Quartet Competition and held prestigious fellowships at both the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. They return to the Crucible Studio to perform Mendelssohn’s last major work, Frank Bridge’s beautiful set of short Idylls and a Beethoven quartet inspired by “contemplating the sky and thinking of the music of the spheres”. MOZART Piano Trio in G K.496 SUK Piano Quintet in G minor Op.8 DVORÁK Piano Quintet No.2 in A Op.81 A delightful Mozart appetiser is the prelude to a Czech family affair. Dvorák’s Second Piano Quintet, featuring one of the composer’s most irresistible folk tunes, was an immediate success from its first performance in 1888. Czech folk and dance tunes can also be heard in Josef Suk’s Piano Quintet, a youthful piece with a beguiling blend of enthusiasm and melancholy. Five years after its composition, Suk married Dvorák’s eldest daughter!

Schubert’s lyrical and romantic Impromptus preface Ravel’s Noble and Sentimental Waltzes. Schubert’s Sonata in D, inspired by a holiday he took in the Alps, is rare in his later output, being almost entirely positive, naïve and carefree.

We generally recommend our evening concerts for children age 7+. However, if you think that your child will sit quietly, then we have no problem with younger children in our audiences. To give everyone the best possible concert experience, we’re currently trialling some designated ‘family friendly’ seats at every concert, so should your child become distracted, you can make a discreet exit between pieces. Bags and coats: Sheffield Theatres Cloakroom will be open for you to leave your coats and bags but please don’t bring any suitcases or large holdalls as they do not have enough space to store them*. Four talented young musicians, Elliott Bailey, Ken Fairbrother, Jesse Francis and Raye Harvey, were joined by leading violinist Rakhi Singh and violist Ruth Gibson for five days of coaching and rehearsals in Sheffield in July 2018.
