WELCOME Welcome to the Sheffield Chamber Music Festival. It is with the greatest pleasure that we invite you to share in a nine-day festival packed with wonderful music. We provide concerts that are the equal of any chamber music events throughout the world, thanks to the extraordinary talents of our resident and visiting musicians.
This year’s Festival features a wide range of music, from the 1700s to the present day. Ensemble 360 is championing the rich chamber music repertoire of Johannes Brahms and hosting informal ‘Meet the Musician’ concerts, which feature pieces selected by the musicians themselves and personal introductions and insights to bring the music to life. Our roster of guests is assembled from across the musical spectrum including phenomenal turntablist Shiva Feshareki, the wonderful folk trio Leveret with Hugh Lupton, actor Henry Goodman, globally acclaimed pianist Stephen Hough, Indian classical violinist Kamalbir Singh and comedy concert genius Rainer Hersch. Often behind a great work there also lies a remarkable story, maybe about the composer, or the performers, or the circumstances surrounding the creation of the music (for example, Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps). So this year we will be sharing some of these stories, exploring the intriguing human connections that lead to the creation of emotive music. Of course, amongst this there will be brilliant storytelling for children and families too. It’s one of the things we are proud of doing well! Angus Smith Artistic Director

EVENING CONCERT

ENSEMBLE 360 HOWELLS Rhapsodic Quintet for clarinet and string quartet BRAHMS Clarinet Trio Op.114 SCHUMANN Märchenerzählungen Op.132 for clarinet, viola and piano HAYDN String Quartet Op.20 No.2 Emotions flow in this opening festival concert as Ensemble 360 weaves a story that travels from melancholy to joy. Howells’ lyrical Quintet evokes an English way of life destroyed by the Great War. This paves the way for a rollercoaster ride from Brahms, whose Clarinet Trio conjures stormy scenes combined with serene moments of calm. The mood lightens with Schumann’s playful Fairy Tales, and the concert concludes with a Haydn quartet, packed with trademark eccentricity, wit and an abundance of cello solos! Welcome drinks
All ticket-holders are invited to join us for a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink in the Upper Crucible Foyer after this concert.

THE END OF TIME
STUDIO LATES
Friday 10 May 9.15 – 10.10pm Crucible Studio Theatre £14 £10 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s
ENSEMBLE 360 MESSIAEN Quatuor pour la fin du temps Inspired by the visionary language of the Apocalypse, the Quartet for the End of Time is imbued with the religious faith that sustained Messiaen during his internment alongside three other French musicians in Stalag 8 prisoner of war camp during the winter of 1940/41. Manuscript paper was provided by a guard, the camp authorities brought in a piano, and the first performance took place on a bitterly cold January evening in front of an audience of fellow prisoners, some of whom were wounded and laid out on stretchers. From this tortured beginning, a profound 20th century masterpiece emerged. Welcome drinks
All ticket-holders are invited to join us for a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink in the Upper Crucible Foyer before this concert.

ENSEMBLE 360 JANÁČEK String Quartet No.1 Kreutzer Sonata ELGAR Romance Op.62 for bassoon and string quartet ADÈS Court Studies from The Tempest for clarinet, violin, cello and piano ELGAR Piano Quintet in A minor Op.84 Elgar’s Piano Quintet is considered by many to be his greatest chamber music work. It is said to have been inspired by legends of Spanish monks struck by lightning while conducting sacrilegious activities in the Sussex countryside. Thomas Adès’s brief Court Studies, from his opera The Tempest, are a great companion to Janáček’s Kreutzer Sonata, which is also tempestuous. Its propulsive rhythms and speech-like melodies express pathos and ecstasy through an amazing and unexpected collective string sound. Naomi is Principal Horn of the Northern Chamber Orchestra and Manchester Camerata, with which she has a leading role in their community work specialising in working with people living with dementia. AMY HARMAN Bassoon with ENSEMBLE 360 BRITTEN Phantasy Quartet Op.2 for oboe, violin, viola and cello PANUFNIK Cantator and Amanda for bassoon and string quartet NIELSEN Wind Quintet Op.43
After a failed early career as a cellist, Amy has had much better success as a bassoonist. Former Principal Bassoon with the Philharmonia Orchestra, she is now Principal of English National Opera and the Aurora Orchestra, as well as a member of Ensemble 360. A particular highlight has been performing with Birmingham Opera as a ‘flying soloist’ from a trapeze suspended above the audience. Amy’s chosen to include Roxanna Panufnik’s Cantator and Amanda in this programme, which tells the story of an ill-fated love affair between a 14th-century monk and the young maiden Amanda. She will also introduce Nielsen’s Wind Quintet, an entertaining piece that captures the character of the musicians he wrote it for, including a wonderful ‘argument’ between the bassoon and clarinet.

But rather than being an evening of introspection, the starting point is Stephen’s observation that “in the word of the arts – painting, literature and music – death has always been a central subject resulting in the most exalted and inexhaustible expression”. Different perspectives are provided by Bach, Busoni and Chopin, while in Liszt’s two Mephisto Waltzes the Devil is confronted face to face. The Vida Breve subtitle of Stephen’s own Fourth Sonata is intended “to evoke the melancholy of life’s short duration…as well as to prepare the listener for a sonata lasting only 10 minutes.” Stephen’s spring 2017 Crucible Studio concert sold out in record time, so early booking is highly recommended.

Not afraid to let the humour and warmth of the music shine, his big personality is always a hit with audiences. In addition to his work as Principal Clarinet of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Matthew’s solo career regularly takes him around the world to play with some of the greatest conductors and orchestras. Matthew has chosen to perform two showcase pieces inspired by celebrated clarinet players of their time. Mozart enjoyed a close friendship with Anton Stadler, and Brahms came out of retirement to write his Clarinet Sonata for Richard Mühlfeld.

Johannes Brahms may be the hardest composer to pin down: a contradiction to fellow composers, music-lovers and possibly even to himself. He has variously been described as an antidote to Wagner and a die-hard classicist; yet there are those – including Schoenberg – who argued that he was the greatest composer of his age and a trailblazer for future modernists.

ENSEMBLE 360 and guests BRAHMS Sextet in G Op.36 Embedded within Brahms’s glorious Sextet are two coded melodies that give a rare glimpse into the composer’s personal life. Clara’s theme, heard in the slow movement, can be traced to a letter Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann in 1855 in which he added the tune as a personal message. Violinist Joseph Joachim also noticed an allusion in a passionate section of the first movement to Agathe von Siebold, a young singer to whom Brahms was briefly engaged. However, the lighthearted finale carries an air of bravado, possibly intended to demonstrate that he was ready to leave matters of the heart behind him.

It reflects Dvořák’s admiration for American Indian and Black American melodies – he correctly predicted that the latter was the future of American music, even if he may not specifically have had jazz in mind! – but the traditional music of Dvořák’s native Bohemia also leaves a strong imprint on this effervescent piece. The whole ensemble (except the piano) takes to the stage for Brahms’s First Serenade, a work full of melodies, from the opening horn theme to the bouncing finale.

Mozart’s Quintet is for the unusual combination of oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn with piano, and each of them is highlighted as they throw the themes to each other. En Saga brought fame to Sibelius in his native Finland and is imbued with hints of legend and myth. The fourth movement of Schubert’s Trout Quintet is based on one of his earlier songs, Die Forelle, but while the tale told in the original song has an unhappy ending for the poor trout, in this Quintet the mood is decidedly upbeat!
