GET CLOSER TO THE MUSIC WITH SHEFFIELD’S NEW-LOOK CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL, A NINEDAY CELEBRATION OF LIVE MUSIC IN THE CITY. Concerts are presented in the unique surroundings of the Crucible Studio, the UK’s most extraordinary venue for chamber music. It’s both intimate and relaxed, a space where you sit so close to the performers you can feel their excitement, see their energy and hear the control in every note. Our resident musicians Ensemble 360, Singer-in-Residence Roderick Williams, and international guest artists perform a wide range of classical chamber music, from very well-known pieces to brand new works. You can also enjoy informal talks, live music in the Winter Garden, drama with music, a Sheffield Cathedral concert, silent film with improvised soundtrack, family events, and much more.

Music is a conversation between musicians and the listener, between musicians themselves, and amongst listeners too. It’s a journey of discovery for us all – hearing the familiar in a new light and encountering something new. And I don’t believe there is a better place for you to experience this than in Sheffield, in the unique ‘in the round’ intimacy of the Crucible’s Studio Theatre. Underpinning this festival is a focus on harmony: exploring the theme in music, and also in other disciplines such as visual art, literature and maths. Harmony, after all, is one of the binding forces of the Universe! As ever, our principal hosts are Ensemble 360 and this year, in our Meet the Musicians concerts, there will be extra opportunities to hear their perspectives on the music they play and their personal performing experiences. On two themed days, exploring harmony and art, and harmony and maths, we also have new Round-Table discussions with fascinating people from the worlds of art and maths. Plus there is lots of musical activity in the Winter Garden and elsewhere. With guests of such international standing as Catrin Finch, Seckou Keita, Marcus du Sautoy, Katarina Karnéus, Peter Hill and Roderick Williams, we hope you will share our excitement about this year’s festival. Angus Smith Artistic Director, Music in the Round

Eisler and Stein for Baritone and Chamber Ensemble) An evening of intense Romantic harmonies. Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll was composed as a private birthday offering to his wife and was first performed on a staircase at the family home on Christmas morning – six years later, themes from the Idyll were woven into the epic opera Siegfried. Mahler’s own poems for Songs of a Wayfarer reveal the emotional aftermath of a failed romance that left the young composer in abject despair. Concert generously supported by James and Angela Kellie

A jealous man burns with such uncontrollable envy that he is driven to murder the greatest composer that has ever lived. And a stranger wearing a mask that resembles the countenance of a stiffened corpse makes an unwelcome and deadly appearance in a remote, besieged castle. Music in the Round and Sheffield Theatres present staged versions of Alexander Pushkin’s short play Mozart and Salieri – the inspiration behind Peter Shaffer’s hit play and film Amadeus – and The Masque of the Red Death by the master of the short horror story, Edgar Allan Poe. Electrifying music is interwoven throughout the evening: Mozart’s brilliant chamber pieces stir Salieri’s hatred, and works by Florent Schmitt and Claude Debussy consciously mirror Poe’s gripping literary style. The musical climax is André Caplet’s Conte Fantastique, an arresting portrayal of The Masque of the Red Death! PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

BERLIOZ Harold en Italie excerpts (transcribed by LISZT for viola and piano) SCHUMANN String Quartet No.1 in A minor Op.41 No.1 Romantic ideals lie at the heart of this programme. Berlioz’s Harold in Italy’was inspired by Lord Bryon’s poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage; such was Liszt’s passionate admiration for the work that, despite misgivings, Berlioz allowed him to prepare this transcription. Schumann’s lyrical first string quartet reflects the fascination for literature he shared with so many artists and musicians of his generation. 19

PETER HILL Piano BACH Goldberg Variations BWV 988 Peter Hill’s recordings of Bach have received universal acclaim, his live concert appearances around the world are keenly anticipated events, and we can’t think of a better place to experience Bach’s keyboard masterpiece than up close in the Crucible Studio. The title of these demanding and virtuoso variations is apparently a reference to the young harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg who may have been the first performer of the collection. The key feature of this epic sequence is how the extraordinary individuality of each movement coalesces into a wonderfully unified whole.

The influence of folk music is readily acknowledged by Dvořák in his portrayal of the Bohemian Forest and by Janáček’s folk-style representation of animals encountered in his youth. Even though Martinů strayed far from home, emigrating to America, there is an enticing blend of jazz-like rhythms and a dash of Czech folk music in his captivating Trio.
light piece intended as a distraction from boredom. Mozart’s six-movement work for string trio is certainly hugely entertaining, but there are also moments of great originality and profound insight. It may be Mozart’s only work for this instrumental combination, but it is a magnificent illustration of the rich variety of texture and enticing sonority that can be achieved by just three players.

We take a different view and in the second of three concerts celebrating this uniquely gifted composer, Ensemble 360 presents his String Quintet in G minor. Dziga Vertov’s 1929 film, part documentary and part cinematic art, follows city life in the Soviet Union through the course of a single day. It’s a celebration of modern life – a brave new world? – with thriving industries, crowded streets, and intimate, disarming moments of great humour and pathos. Ranked 8th in ‘Sight and Sound’ Critics Poll of the Top 10 films of all time! Part of Yorkshire Silent Film Festival. Find out more at ysff.co.uk

Mozart’s Dissonance Quartet owes its title to the tortured harmonic nature of its unusual slow introduction, after which the characteristic joyfulness of the composer’s quartets is rapidly restored. The rich and inventive Piano Trio in E major was written in the fruitful summer of 1788 when he also composed his last three symphonies.

FINALE 7.15 - 9.15pm Crucible Studio Theatre
Our festival ends with three more giants of Romantic music in chamber-music mode, together with a short new work from recent University of Sheffield graduate Ellen Sargen. Bruckner’s Quintet has the full serenity and grandeur of his symphonies but Puccini’s Crisantemi is a stark contrast to his emotionally super-charged operas – it is a dignified elegy on the death of a friend.
We close with a newly commissioned £20 chamber version of Wagner’s £14 Disabled & Unemployed Meistersingers Overture by Iain Farrington, £5 Students & Under 35s whose Shostakovich Jazz Suite arrangements were such a success in 2017. Concert generously supported by Kate Dugdale Photo: Kaupo Kikkas

COMING AS A FAMILY?
We believe that classical music should be for everyone, including young children and families. Each season includes family events that have been specially tailored for younger listeners. We generally recommend our evening concerts for children age 7+. However, if you think that your child will sit quietly, then we have no problem with younger children in our audiences. To give everyone the best possible concert experience, we’re currently trialling some designated ‘family friendly’ seats at every concert, so should your child become distracted, you can make a discreet exit between pieces. For more information please ask a member of staff before a concert, check our website or call the office on 0114 281 4660.

Please be aware that all concert end times are supplied as approximate timings only and may be subject to change.
