Music Venue Trust Welcomes £2.2 Million Fund From Scottish Government For Grassroots Music Venues Fund will stabilise venues in short term and prevent permanent closures #saveourvenues Scottish grassroots music venues will receive £2.2 million from Scottish Government to stabilise venues and prevent permanent closure. Announced on Friday by Economy Secretary Fiona Hyslop, the fund was agreed with Music Venue Trust and will support grassroots music venues until October.

Grassroots music venues are the ‘research and development’ hub of Scotland's music industry and invaluable community hubs. The internationally established definition of GMVs can be found here. MVT expect venues which fit these criteria to be eligible for the fund which is intended to cover fixed costs which include rent, non-furloughed staff, servicing debts and utilities.

Nick Stewart from Sneaky Pete's in Edinburgh said: "This provides a lifeline for venues like Sneaky Pete's whose future hangs in the balance. With no income in the pipeline and no reliable timeline for opening, venues' staff have been distraught, especially as other enterprise or arts funding schemes were inaccessible to them. This will provide wellearned relief for these venues, and not before time. At Sneaky Pete's we can begin to plan our recovery now, so that we can bring back music to our community who have really rallied behind us in an incredible way. We're over the moon that we've been assured we can survive to eventually get back to making more paid performance opportunities for musicians. Margaret Fay Shaw was born in 1903 near Pittsburgh. A talented piano player, she loved music from a young age.

Arriving in South Uist in 1929 to collect Gaelic songs, she fell in love with the island, and spent the remainder of her days collecting songs and stories, whilst taking photographs and filming a way of living which was ceasing to exist. She married John Lorne Campbell in 1935, and two years later, they purchased Canna. Margaret stayed in Canna House until her death at the age of 101 in 2004. In this programme, Canna House archivist Fiona J Mackenzie gives a fascinating insight into the life of Margaret Fay Shaw. HebCelt Announces Array Of Fresh Commissions For Online Sessions #HebCeltSessions New HebCelt commissions to be performed online 15-18 July Array of music artists to perform, with a special film celebrating HebCelt Donations will go to Bethesda Hospice in Stornoway

The world-renowned Hebridean Celtic Festival has announced an online programme of short film sessions which will see a variety of leading musical artists and creatives producing new work for festival week in July.

Dubbed Seisean HebCelt / HebCelt Sessions, the commissions will feature Freumhan / Roots featuring Calum Alex MacMillan, Norrie Maciver (Skipinnish) and James D. Mackenzie (Breabach) (Wednesday 15 July, 8pm); Julie Fowlis and an array of Gaelic singers, accompanists and dancers (Thursday 16 July, 8pm); Colin MacLeod with Rory Macdonald of Runrig and a handpicked cast of musicians with a new recording of Runrig anthem ‘Only The Brave’ (Friday 17 July, 8pm).

Closing the weekend sessions will be a film including footage and interviews gathered over recent HebCelt festivals together with some current lockdown interviews (Saturday 18 July, 10pm).

Highlands Youth Arts Hub (HYAH), a consortium of arts organisations led by Fèis Rois, has launched ‘Creative In Your Community’, a brand new arts fund which offers 18 young artists from across the Highlands the chance to secure £1000 to support them with a project which will maintain and develop their creativity and inspiration whilst also engaging with their local community.

Each of the 18 artists will also receive three days of mentoring from well-known, successful industry professionals, including; renowned Gaelic singer, Julie Fowlis, filmmaker Thomas Hogben, performance maker Robbie Synge, award-winning visual artist Joanne B Kaar, theatre maker Jenna Watt and Highland writer, Anne MacLeod.

Multi-award-winning band Skerryvore released their blistering new album, 'Live Across Scotland' on 10 July to celebrate their 15th anniversary.

Before lockdown, the eight-piece band had been due to host their very own one-day festival branded ‘XV’ against the iconic backdrop of Inveraray Castle, Argyll, to mark the milestone year.

Capturing the energy and atmosphere of the band’s live performance, Skerryvore’s first ever live album features 15 tracks recorded at muchloved Scottish venues during the band’s recent 2019/20 winter tour.

Martin Gillespie of Skerryvore said: “We’ve been planning to record a live album for years so our recent winter tour that took in venues across Scotland that we love playing in just felt like the perfect opportunity.

Skerryvore’s signature trad-rock fusion is captured in full swing at towns the length and breadth of Scotland, all the way from Aberdeen’s Tivoli Theatre and The Ironworks, Inverness to Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, Stramash in Edinburgh and The Albert Halls, Stirling.

“This album is our first fully live album recording and we wanted it to really capture the sound and atmosphere of our live shows. The album feels like a fitting way to mark our 15th anniversary and is all the more special now as we find ourselves, like so many others, missing live gigs and festivals. Live Across Scotland hopefully gives fans a taste of the live show atmosphere in the meantime.”

Best known in the jazz world as the pianist and arranger behind the award-winning trumpeter Colin Steele’s success over the past twentyfive years and for his own acclaimed trio (described by The Guardian as “cracking”), Dave Milligan is a musician of remarkable versatility.

As well as working with a prodigious list of jazz musicians, including Art Farmer, Scott Hamilton, Peter King, Joe Temperley and Charlie Mariano, he has featured with ace session guitarist Larry Carlton, percussionist Trilok Gurtu and Nashville gospel-soul legends the McCrary Sisters and has a parallel career in traditional music with international fiddle band String Sisters, Scottish folk orchestra The Unusual Suspects and ongoing projects with harpist-singer Corrina Hewat. He also collaborated, as musical supervisor, with Mark Knopfler on the stage musical version of Local Hero.

The music on Momento resulted from meeting Italian bass and drums team Danilo Gallo and U. T. Gandhi on an international project with Colin Steele at Edinburgh Jazz Festival. Milligan enjoyed playing with the Italians so much that, when a Creative Scotland artists bursary allowed him to travel to Cavalicco in the Italian province of Udine, he booked three days in ArteSuono recording studio with engineer Stefano Amerio and invited Gallo and Gandhi to join him.

Over the two days, the trio recorded everything they played and with the expert recording of Amerio, who has worked on over forty albums for the prestigious ECM Records label, they finished up with twenty tracks, some completely improvised, some Milligan originals and some improvisations based on folk songs.

By contrast, Sandy’s 70th, the album’s one solo piano piece, is a tender waltz, a birthday tribute to Milligan’s father with echoes of Erik Satie.

Made in the Border closes the album with a smart, assertive melody initially taken up by Gallo but passed on to Milligan, who was indeed “made in the Borders” (near Hawick) and who adds conspicuous urgency in his closing jabbed piano chords.
