Information published today by Creative Scotland, reveals that 865 people have now received one off grants of between £500-£2,500, in the first phase of the Creative Scotland Arts and Creative Bridging Bursary programme.

Cabinet Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: “This is a deeply worrying time for Scotland’s world-renowned culture sector, which has been particularly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Many artists, performers and freelancers have seen an immediate shutdown of work, resulting in a dramatic loss of income, with many facing real hardship. “We want to do all we can to help and, working quickly with Creative Scotland, we have repurposed grant money and built packages of focused support for those who need it most. More than 850 individual freelancers and artists who have lost income due to COVID-19 will now receive a vital lifeline from the Bridging Bursary Fund to help them through this extremely difficult time. “Culture is central to who we are. It is one of Scotland’s major strengths and it will continue to play a crucial part in getting us through this crisis as we rebuild our country and look toward the future.” Iain Munro, Chief Executive of Creative Scotland commented: “In the midst of the very serious personal and professional impacts being experienced by so many people working across the creative sector, it is encouraging to be able to report today, that these vital funds are reaching so many people so quickly. “Nevertheless, while the measures we’ve already undertaken are responding to the initial impact of this crisis, we recognise that they are limited when compared to the significant future challenges faced by our arts screen and creative industries sectors. Nordoff Robbins has established such a strong relationship with the Scottish music industry over the past 20 years, and the charity truly can’t thank everyone enough for their support. Finally, Tide Lines, the folk, rock-pop sensation sweeping the nation, have just released their much anticipated second album ‘Eye Of The Storm’ which topped the Scottish album charts and will bring their combination of Celtic soul, folk and guitars to Saturday’s fundraising stream. Nordoff Robbins is the largest independent music therapy charity in the UK, dedicated to enriching the lives of people affected by life limiting illness, isolation or disability. The charity, who has benefitted from the longstanding support of the Scottish music industry through their annual Scottish Music Awards event, is determined to unite people through the power of music, as now more than ever people need to feel a sense of community. Nordoff Robbins have unfortunately had to temporarily stop all face-to-face music therapy sessions to protect the health of those they work with and that of their music therapists. Due to the current challenges it has been estimated that the cancellation or postponement of fundraising events and activities will result in a loss of around 75% in the charity’s fundraising income for 2020.

Despite this, Nordoff Robbins are still working to support people and help with social isolation and the charity have developed other forms of therapy through the likes of online music therapy delivery, virtual online choirs plus creating digital resources for people to continue to make music together in their home. New Gaelic Music Online Lessons To Be Offered Free During Lockdown In a bid to support people, of all ages, with their learning and practicing of traditional music and Gaelic skills at home during lockdown, leading arts organisation, Fèisean nan Gàidheal, has launched a new online music tuition service, which will be free of charge to all. Under the banner of FèisTV and with funding from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Creative Scotland and Highlands & Islands Enterprise, a video series of traditional music lessons, at different levels, has been created in Gaelic and English to support those with no Gaelic, learners of the language and fluent Gaelic speakers. The Oide (meaning tutor in Gaelic) series currently offers lessons in accordion, fiddle and Gaelic song, with more instruments available soon, thanks to further funding from the Scottish Government. The lessons, which are suitable for all ages and abilities, are led by some of the most experienced traditional music tutors in the country, including accordionist Ian Smith from popular folk band, Trail West, fiddler Robbie Grieg, who plays with electronic folk bank, INYAL, and singers James Graham, Eilidh Cormack (a member of female singing trio, SIAN) and Deirdre Graham. With more than 70 video lessons at levels appropriate for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners, this resource will provide something for everyone, allowing people to continue their musical creativity or even learn a new skill during lockdown. Fèisean nan Gàidheal’s Chief Executive, Arthur Cormack, said: “It was always our plan to develop our FèisTV resource to offer online music lessons in addition to live streaming of events. Normally these lessons will be part of a

paid subscription service, but we are delighted to offer this new service for free at this time whilst people are safely at home and looking for activities to keep themselves going. We are grateful to the funders who have enabled us to develop this resource.” Laura Nicolson, Project Officer at Fèisean nan Gàidheal explained: “As part of the new programme #cleachdiaigantaigh, in which we are involved together with Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comunn na Gàidhlig and other Gaelic organisations, Fèisean nan Gàidheal will deliver more live events online in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we hope people will get some enjoyment and new skills from the Oide video lessons.” Steven Kellow, Funding & Project Officer at Bòrd na Gàidhlig said: “We welcome this resource which is extremely useful in supporting music tuition through the medium of Gaelic. Fèisean nan Gàidheal and other groups have been working hard to produce resources through the #cleachdiaigantaigh / #useitathome initiative and we are grateful for the creative opportunities like this they have delivered at this challenging time.” The Oide video lessons can be found online at www.tv.feisean.org

Leasanan Ùra Air-Loidhne Gu Bhith An-Asgaidh Aig An Àm Seo Chaidh Oide, an t-seirbheis ùr ionnsachaidh aig Fèisean nan Gàidheal, a chur fo sheòl. Fo bhratach FèisTV, le maoin bho Bhòrd na Gàidhlig, Alba Chruthachail agus HIE, chaidh sreath leasanan ciùil a chruthachadh aig diofar ìrean agus le taghadh an dèanamh sa Ghàidhlig no sa Bheurla. Ri linn taicairgid a bharrachd bho Riaghaltas na h-Alba, bidh leasanan eile air tuilleadh ionnsramaidean a’ nochdadh a dh’aithghearr. Thuirt Ceannard Fèisean nan Gàidheal, Art MacCarmaig: “Bha e riamh nar beachd goireas FèisTV a leudachadh gus leasanan a thabhann. San àbhaist bidh aig luchd-cleachdaidh pàigheadh airson nan leasanan ach tha sinn toilichte an t-seirbheis ùr a thabhann an-asgaidh aig an àm seo fhad ‘s a daoine gan cumail fhèin sàbhailte aig an taigh agus a’ sireadh ghnìomhan a chumas a’ dol iad. Tha sinn fada an comain nam buidhnean maoineachaidh a chuidich sinn seo a leasachadh.” Mhìnich Laura NicNeacail, Oifigear Phròiseactan Fèisean nan Gàidheal: “Mar phàirt den sgeama ùr #cleachdiaigantaigh anns a bheil sinn an sàs le Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comunn na Gàidhlig agus buidhnean eile, bidh Fèisean nan Gàidheal a’ lìbhrigeadh barrachd thachartasan beò air-loidhne sna seachdainean a tha romhainn. Dave Arcari :: ‘Influences’ EP + special livestream release date :: 2 June @ www.davearcari.com/store/

Scottish alt.blues troubadour Dave Arcari releases a new EP on Tuesday 2 June. 'The Acoustic Roots of Dave Arcari' is a fivesong EP featuring cover versions from artists that influenced him when he started out playing guitar – and it’s release is scheduled for a few hours after a special one-off livestream concert on Monday 1 June at 8pm.

“Dave plays like he got his skin turned inside out and pretty soon my skin was inside out too listening and it was all good. That boy bleeds for you – he a real down deep player and a soul man…” Seasick Steve

As well as performing in front of live audience, Arcari has missed the interaction with gig-goers after shows. “We’ll also be having a live Q&A/ chat session as part of the livestream right after the concert finishes,” adds Arcari. “Like at a ‘real’ show, Margaret will be at the merch table and I’ll join her so we can enjoy a chat and drink – albeit virtually’ – with folks.”

Unusually for Arcari, who normally sticks to self-written material, the hour-long livestream will feature a set-list of covers from artists like Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Donovan and more…even some 50s rock’n’roll. ‘A lot of the material will be stuff I played busking on the streets of Glasgow, Wishaw and Kirkcaldy when learning guitar in the early/ mid-1980s,” says Arcari who is keen to keep giving folks something different in his livestreams during this difficult lockdown period.

“While not a secret, we’ve been keeping the release fairly quiet so it can be a nice addition to the livestream and folks will be able to stream/download the EP from midnight just an hour or two after the livestream finished,” he says.

Last Night From Glasgow :: 'The Isolation Sessions' album released - 'out now' :: buy at www.shop.lastnightfromglasgow.com

Not-for-profit label Last Night From Glasgow have launched The Isolation Sessions, a compilation to be released on vinyl, CD and digital download in order to raise funds for their beloved Glasgow venues and record shops affected by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Featuring artists from the label’s roster covering their favourite past releases from LNFG acts. The project has submissions; all recorded at home – in isolation – from Carla J Easton, Cloth, Bis, Close Lobsters and more. Speaking about the importance of the project, label founder Ian Smith said, “It is clear to us that our valued venues will struggle during the lockdown. So to ensure they are still here for us when we can leave our homes, we have decided to help.’’ All money raised by sales of the compilation will be donated to the venues affected by the recent

cancellations of the label’s gigs. All production costs will also be borne by LNFG and the label will be donating 10% of its income from the remainder of the year to the same venues as well. Not only is this looking likean essential project, if the first premiered track is anything to go by, it’s also shaping up to be a tasty one too. Edinburgh ensemble Mt Doubt covering Glasgow band, Sister John’s ‘Nothing Else’ was premiered on Vic Galloways BBC Radio Scotland show and has already received numerous plaudits. First launched on the 17 March, the project has already raised £6000, and is now the label stores biggest selling LPever. All tracks have been mastered by Paul McGeechan (Love & Money/Starless) and are available to pre-order on CD and a choice off our colours of vinyl. As a side project label photographer Brian Sweeney has been travelling the length and breadth of the country to take isolation portraits of members and artists. A collection of well over 100 now exists. A testament to the community spirit of LNFG and the telling reminder of the times.

Keir Gibson :: ‘Circles’ single released - 20 May :: to download and stream

Fort Williambased alt-pop songwriter Keir Gibson returns with his third single, ‘Circles’. Emerging Scottish artist Keir Gibson is back with new music after an impressive breakthrough in 2019. Keir released his first single ‘Eyes Wide’ in August last year, the day before performing at the Belladrum Festival - the Highland singer’s “home festival”. In the nine months that followed he: released his second single ‘Hollow’; was played on BBC Radio 1 several times by DJs Scott Mills and Molly King; was earmarked by The Scottish Sun as “Scotland’s next big breakthrough talent”; and toured the UK. This was all before rounding off the year performing to 5,000 revellers at Edinburgh’s famous Hogmanay Street Party. This month, the 19-year-old who lives in the shadow of Ben Nevis is set to release his third and most ambitious single to date - ‘Circles’. ‘Circles’ is the third instalment in a series of emotion-laden, escapist pop songs all produced by London duo The Nocturns, mixed by Matty Green (Dua Lipa, Dermot Kennedy) and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Joe La Porta.

The track reinforces Keir’s signature sound, which combines alt-pop soundscapes comparable to producers and artists like Jon Bellion, Lauv and Maggie Rogers with vivid lyricism that could be mistaken for a script from the latest wistful teen drama on Netflix.

year-old Highlander who finished High School less than a year ago.

‘Circles’ provides Keir’s perspective on a Capping it all off is Keir’s emotive voice - one relationship that’s past which hints at a thoughtful character and old its best. Keir said: soul which it’s difficult to believe belong to a 19- “‘Circles’ is about two people who are in a constant cycle of falling in and out with each other. They both know it’s unhealthy but at the same time they’re too afraid to lose the other person by turning their backs on the relationship and admitting that it’s over.” Summer 2020 was set to see Keir bring his full live band out to entertain audiences at the Kelvingrove Bandstand, Belladrum, Live at Leeds and to support arena-fillers The Stereophonics. Like all musicians, Keir’s best laid plans have been interrupted by COVID-19. Instead, he has been entertaining music fans virtually, including performing a set on the King Tut’s Facebook page as part of the recent ‘Sofathon Singalong’. Keir said: “It’s gutting to have my early 2020 and summer shows postponed, but obviously everyone’s safety comes first. I’ve been working hard to reschedule gigs for later this year and hope to announce these very soon. “In the meantime, I’m continuing to work on new music and am keen to keep sharing it with everyone who has supported me over the last 12 months. ‘Circles’ is the first of a few new tracks I’m hoping to release this year. Hopefully it entertains people while they’re stuck inside!”
