BBC Actors Help ‘Scotland Sings’ Reach Fever Pitch! Cast from BBC 1 hit drama series Waterloo Road joined forces with singers in Greenock to launch 'Scotland Sings 2013', an initiative developed to encourage people to sing in public, which is taking place for the second time on Saturday 22 June. Supported by Creative Scotland, Scotland Sings is coordinated by ‘Hands Up for Trad’, the organisers of The Scots Trad Music Awards and BBC Scotland Young Trad Musician of the Year. Simon Thoumire, Creative Director of Hands Up for Trad, said: “We were blown away with the response to Hands Up for Trad's Scotland Sings campaign last year, which just goes to show that there is huge appetite for singing and with such a variety of events on offer, there will be something for everyone to enjoy no matter where they are in the country or their level of ability.”

The Scottish Album of Year Award shortlist WINNING ARTIST SET TO RECEIVE £20,000 AT AN AWARD CEREMONY TO BE HELD AT BARROWLANDS ON 20 JUNE The Scottish Music Industry Association [SMIA] has announced the shortlist for this year’s Scottish Album of the Year Award (SAY Award), stating that the ten albums that have made it to the shortlist represent the breadth and wealth of work that is being made and produced in Scotland. Chairing the independent panel of judges, Glasgow Academic, John Williamson, said: “Although there was a strong longlist including some hugely commercially successful albums, the ten chosen for the short list are those that best reflect the range of music made by Scottish artists in 2012. It includes debut albums and ones by people who have been making music for thirty years; solo albums and collaborative projects; genres from folk music to hip-hop. It is perhaps a measure of the collective quality that it is hard to see an obvious winner from the ten.”

The judging panel included: Douglas Anderson (Author/ Broadcaster/Writer), Christopher Brookmyre (Author), Stewart Cruickshank (Radio Producer), Tom Doyle (Author/Journalist), Douglas Gordon (Visual Artist), Kate Molleson (Journalist), Joe Muggs (Journalist/A&R), Jude Rogers (Journalist), Tjinder Singh (Cornershop; Ample Play Records), Rebecca Vasmant (DJ/ He added: “While on the surface they may not have much in common beyond their Scottish connections, it strikes me that each of these albums Producer) and Sue Wilson (Journalist). was coherently and lovingly made by artists with a clear vision of what they were trying to do. The list is merely a reflection of who, in the The 24-hour voting window judges’ opinion, executed that vision best. He added: “We’ve been very lucky that people have embraced the Album, so for this record to be included in the shortlist for The SAY Award is very humbling and we’re extremely proud to have been included. 2012 was a great year for Scottish music so for No One Can Ever Know to be seen as one of the 10 best records our country produced is amazing!” Caroline Parkinson, Director of Creative Development, Creative Scotland said: “Congratulations to the ten shortlisted acts of the SAY Award. It’s great to see Scotland’s talented musicians being recognised and rewarded for their hard work and their great albums. We wish them all the best for the 20 June”. Suzy Clark, Brand Manager, Dewar’s: “This is a great day for Scottish music: the diversity of the shortlist really does showcase the best of Scottish talent, something we at Dewar’s are very proud to be part of.” Peter Leathem, CEO, PPL: “PPL would like to congratulate the ten acts that have been shortlisted. "Sensational" Hot Seats have Scotland-only tour

“Astounding” – David Innes, R2 (Rock ‘n’ Reel) magazine

Virginian livewires The Hot Seats have wowed the crowds at big events such as Celtic Connections, Shetland Folk Festival, Didmarton Bluegrass Festival, Maverick Festival, Speyfest and Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where they picked up the biggest accolade possible - a Herald Angel - for their outstanding contribution to the event following a successful run at The Famous Spiegeltent. The band makes a by-popular-demand return in July for a string of Scottish dates that include a main stage appearance as one of the visiting attractions at HebCeltFest and rounds the tour off with a return to Edinburgh Fringe. Annual visitors to the UK for a number of years due to the scale of their popuarity, the fivepiece is now recognised as one of the most entertaining touring American roots bands on the circuit, pulling capacity crowds to many venues due to their solid reputation as an act that's not to be missed. Described as “brilliant” by UK Americana magazine, Maverick, the publication booked the band to play as one of the main attractions at their big annual Summer Festival They were widely recognised as one of the outstanding acts at last year’s Shetland Folk Festival, their fiery brand on blistering Appalachian old-time mixed with left of centre bluegrass and a sprinkling of their own colourful originals winning them legions of fans wherever they go. It’s fun, fun, fun all the way – and sizzling musicianship too – as they provide one of the most dynamic shows ever to tour here. The band started out fine-tuning their skills on the Stateside redneck bars and college clubs circuit where they experimented with a suitcase-full of assorted toys to supplement the guitar/mandolin/banjo/fiddle/bass line-up, employing everything from kazoo and jawharp to washboard, tin can percussion and Chinese blocks. Their original music is simultaneously hard to classify and instantly identifiable, combining the virtuosic soloing and tightness of bluegrass, the band-driven rhythm of old time, the jerky bounce of ragtime, and the swagger of good old rock and roll. There’s a brand new album out and it's getting rave reviews. Frontman Josh Bearman says they have always enjoyed tourting in Scotland so much that they decided to concentrate this entire visit north of the Border. "We have so many friends over here now that it feels a bit like coming home," he said. "We're ready to party!"

Scots of all ages can now 'Engage' with the RSNO Increased access through new programme, RSNO Engage, will reach fifty thousand in first year In September 2013 the Orchestra commences a nine-month residency in Highland region, culminating in a week-long celebration in April 2014. Planned activities include giving young people on the Isle of Skye the opportunity to learn brass with the RSNO for the first time, a mentoring scheme with Highland Regional Youth Orchestra, a remix project looking at cross-over between digital media, dance and classical music, and intergenerational work. The residency will be partnered and supported by Eden Court, Highland Council and High Life Highlands.

This will be open to all young people aged 16 to 18 with a passion for music, regardless of whether they are learning an instrument. The Orchestra has also started recruitment today for a Creative Media Coordinator who will be responsible for all digital aspects of projects and creating new ways of working across the country via digital linkups. This role will be a key position in RSNO Engage achieving its ambitions for the digital age as the Orchestra prepare to move into their new home in 2014. Before the Orchestra’s moves into its new premises in summer 2014 it will develop an Apprenticeship Scheme with the Royal Conservatoire Scotland, who will be near neighbours following the relocation. The goal is to assist and support young musicians in developing their creative career; providing students with performance, workshop and education opportunities. The RSNO will offer young musicians aged 12 to 21 the opportunity to perform at RSNO events in front-of-house areas. Musicians will be asked to submit videos of themselves or their ensemble performing 30mins of music.

CAST FROM THE BBC's WATERLOO ROAD HELP ‘SCOTLAND SINGS’ REACH FEVER PITCH! continued from page 1 .....

Scotland Sings returns after a hugely successful inaugural campaign in November 2012, which saw almost 5000 people from singing groups across the country, take part to celebrate St Andrew’s Day. The event once again hopes to encourage people to honour Scotland as a singing nation and its rich singing traditions in a truly unique way, whether that be through starting a band, joining a choir or community singing group or getting together with friends to enjoy the series of singing events that will take place across Scotland, in locations including Edinburgh, Perth, Glasgow, Dundee and Shetland. Trained singer Carl Au, who plays Waterloo Road bad boy, Barry Barry and has also appeared hit musical Jersey Boys in London’s West End, said, “I can’t encourage people enough to sing and I think Scotland Sings is a fantastic initiative. You don’t have to have an amazing voice to enjoy the experience of being part of a choir or singing group.” He added: “If we can get more people out of the house, socialising, singing and having fun, then that’s what it’s all about and Scotland Sings does an amazing job promoting that. I’d really urge people to get involved and sign up to a Scotland Sings event in your area. It’s going to be fantastic!” The programme for 22 June offers a spectacular mix of traditional and contemporary events that will showcase Scotland’s rich creativity. Sharon King takes her Reckless Angels on the road Sharon King, the Edinburgh based singer /songwriter with a talent for spinning yarns continues to build a reputation for relaxed and intimate live shows, plus she has recently recorded album number four: NOTHING = EVERYTHING to critical acclaim. Sharon is joined on her 2013 Scottish tour by Reckless Angels, Jenny Hill (double bass and vocals) and Rowan Rheingans (fiddle, banjo and vocals). The trio is a powerhouse of vocal harmony and instrumentation, which ably supports Sharon’s award winning and emotive songs.

We’re thrilled to introduce you to the sublime sounds of Ummagma, whose cocktail of space rock, dreampop ambient, indietronic post-rock and shoegaze is potent yet harmonious. Dundee-educated Shauna McLarnon, whose roots extend to Fife, contributes vocals to layers of sound, created by Alexander Kretov. Together, they combine deep textured soundscapes, mesmerising vocals and beats to deliver a rich and rewarding listen, sure to please fans of early 4AD output and the early 90s dreampop and shoegaze heyday. Ummagma has just released a fresh track ‘Lama’, remixed by Ian Baird (A*Star, Spring Clock Wonder), with a drive as powerful as his previous SPC ECO remix. This single is the latest contribution to the Fund for Danny Lackey, a charitable initiative created in memory of Danny Lackey, cofounder of the When the Sun Hits blog and a leader in the shoegaze dreampop post-punk community, who recently lost his battle with cancer. Funds raised will help his family cover the massive medical bills incurred. This remix is available for streaming and embedding on Soundcloud and for purchase via the Fund’s Bandcamp page.

King is a natural raconteur with an easy grace. Her astute observations on Scottish life are carried in contemporary song writing, delivered wrapped in witty banter and peppered with tales of her travels: colours and textures are artfully woven through the narratives by The Reckless Angels. Keen to support up and coming talent and help enable young folk to find their performance voice in rural communities, King has offered 15 minute support slots to local musicians aged 18 and under. In keeping with this ethos all gigs on the tour are free to under 14’s, however they must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets for all dates are available through Sharon's website or on the door on the night.

Since debuting their albums ‘Antigravity’ and ‘Ummagma’ in July, Ummagma has been keeping busy in the studio and has released several other remixes, including ‘Lama’ by San Francisco DIY post-punk darkwave shoegaze artist Jane Woodman . These remixes are teasers for an forthcoming Ummagma remix competition, involving 80 partners (magazines/blogs/radio stations/labels/DJ collectives) from 24 countries. Ummagma, who have been in the Scottish New Music Chart since August and NYC's Indie Darkroom Top-10 Chart since July, have been getting healthy airplay across Scotland and have also been featured in over 155 unique press articles, including The VPME, AltSounds, Sounds Better With Reverb, The Sound of Confusion, Echoes & Dust, and a full-page spread in Rolling Stone Russia.

Delta Mainline are from Edinburgh and their muchanticipated debut album 'Oh! Enlightened' was recorded at Chem19 Studios over two years, with engineering and co-production by Davey McAulay (Mogwai, Mike Heron, Remember Remember). The album flows effortlessly, its celestial air countered by an unpredictable sonic menace, before climaxing in a serene, haunting end. The band will be touring Oh! Enlightened across the UK from March.

After growing popularity within the Edinburgh music scene and a series of successful gigs, The Well Rested have decided to release Family Tree as a single. The Well Rested are a three piece, Edinburgh based band and I would describe the music as Alternative Indie/ Folk. This stripped down music is refreshing, original and easy to listen too. Prominent bass and drums play along side catchy guitar riffs.

ARDENTJOHN Waiting for the Season Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now

‘Waiting for the Season’ is the result of five days spent up at the cottage on Loch Fyne. This was followed by many months of homemade mixing, debating, remixing, arguing, making up and pulling in a few favours from some talented musician friends of ours. Though we’ve never been shy of a reverb dial or an overdub, this time, we wanted to capture as many instruments live and in the same room as we could. We hope that you enjoy the result. ‘Cycles of Life' is a deeply personal, honest and ultimately uplifting account of the difficult life experiences Amy has faced and encapsulates the sense of moving from dark to light.
