Alt is big, it’s bold and it’s brash – it’s Alt. It’s here to reclaim music from shiny floored studios and give it back to the fans, each episode crackling with an energy and vibrancy that comes from a mix of crowdpleasing favourites and exciting breakthrough acts. The headliners go back to their roots, playing intimate, electric sets to diehard fans, and the postindustrial aesthetic of derelict spaces lend the show a unique visual style reflecting the spare, down and dirty performances from emerging stars and seasoned professionals. Since the noisy dawn of rock’n’roll, Scotland has produced bands that have ignited stages and imaginations. From Lonnie Donegan through to The View, Scotland has punched above its musical weight. With the brightest up and coming talents at the roots of the scene, right through to the most renowned and best in the country, this series will feature the music and musicians that represent the strength of talent the country has to offer and the amazing contributions it has made to popular and contemporary music. In episode one, Motherwell’s finest, THE LA FONTAINES top the bill. 2018 was another landmark year for the band, which saw them tour Europe, perform across India and round it all off with a sell-out homecoming show at the Motherwell Concert Hall. The set includes latest single Up and fan favourites Release the Hounds and Common Problem. The show also features the gorgeous “chamber-pop” of MODERN STUDIES, whose latest album received a string of 5-star reviews, Inyal putting their electro spin on traditional folk and the hypnotic, Mercury nominated C DUNCAN. www.bbcalba.co.uk SATURDAY 23 FEBRUARY Take The Floor: 7pm on BBC Radio Scotland. work was Gaelic Scotland where he recorded the events and traditions of the local people, including a wealth of poetry, music and song from generations of tradition bearers. Fifty years on, 22-year-old Pàdruig Morrison from Grimsay in North Uist, who has a passion for Scottish studies and music, sets out to discover more about this remarkable man. Although his contribution to the likes of the School of Scottish Studies is vast, his name as a pioneer of folklore collecting methods is largely unknown to the masses due to his untimely passing in 1983. With archive recordings and interviews from family members, colleagues, and friends, this programme explores the remarkable legacy he left to Scottish folklore. www.bbcalba.co.uk

Scottish troubadour joined by Estonian guitar master for double-bill shows GIGnotes ..... Dave Arcari + Andres Roots @ Wednesday 27 February - Glad Cafe, Glasgow :: Friday 1 March - Leith Depot, Edinburgh :: Saturday 2 March - Memorial Hall, Milton of Buchanan, Drymen. All tour details @ www.davearcari.com/tour

Scotland's hard working alt.blues troubadour DAVE ARCARI returns from another USA tour to play a three exclusive double-bill shows with his friend ANDRES ROOTS – Estonia’s top blues and slide guitarist. The pair will play Glasgow’s Glad Cafe on Wednesday 27 February then on Friday 1 March they are at Leith Depot, Edinburgh. The final show of the series is on Saturday 2 March at Memorial Hall, Milton of Buchanan, Drymen – close to Arcari’s home on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond…and the venue for the 2017 recording of his Live at Memorial Hall double album. The two musicians have been close friends since Roots instigated Arcari’s first appearances in Estonia – and, in fact, outside the UK – in 2005 which included the Augustibluus Festival and a Tartu blues club event where Arcari was the first overseas performer to appear. Arcari has since returned to play major festivals and venues in Estonia on an almost annual basis, most recently in December when one of the shows was a special event celebrating the 15th anniversary of Tartu blues club. Roots has visited Scotland and the UK a number of times over the same period, most recently when he and Arcari were both billed at Shetland Blues Festival in 2013.
