the massive sense of loss and the tragic fact that thousands of bodies lay unidentified during World War One, the Unknown Warrior became the subject of tributes, graves and memorials across Europe. Ricky said: ‘It was very moving to discover the stories of these soldiers who were said to be ‘known unto God’ and also to hear from the families who mourned them. ‘The result of this journey is a ballad which I hope reflects some of the emotional power that this iconic symbol still has for the many people who have lost loved ones in conflicts.’ The sheet music for the ballad, arranged in four parts by arranger David Higham, is being made available for any choirs who may wish to perform it in their own services or commemorations. www.bbc.co.uk/radioscotland TUESDAY 13 NOVEMBER

LYON: At Green Note for London Roots Festival. A double bill with two of Scotland’s finest voices, with songs that will touch your soul and take you from Caledonia to the Southern states badlands and back – with their unique blend of Americana, roots, rock and pop grooves. Yvonne Lyon consistently combines poignant lyrics with strong, creative melodies demonstrating a voice that can be both fragile and intense. Dean Owens is a genre jumping artist, with roots in both his home town of Edinburgh and his spiritual home of Nashville. Echoes of both shine through his music – celtic spirit, country soul. Both have released memorable albums in 2018 (Yvonne Lyon – Metanoia, Dean Owens – Southern Wind), which have cemented their reputations as artists of note, with rave 4 and 5 star reviews across the board.

SHOOGLENIFTY: At The Water Rats, London. Formed in Edinburgh, Shooglenifty began life with a residency at the La Belle Angele pub and quickly drew a strong fanbase for their energised, contemporary roots material which soon became one of Scotland's most unique musical exports. They are credited being the originators of 'acid-croft', a fiery and infectious blend of Celtic traditional music and dance grooves that band members describe as "hypnofolkadelic ambient trad." A supremely dexterous and witty live band, their energetic live performances have kept them in constant demand around the world. www.shooglenifty.com/gigs/

Aberfeldy Festival Aberfeldy 2-3 November A wee cultural, music, poetry, drama and arts festival in the wonder of Highland Perthshire. The festival takes place the first weekend in November every year and the majority of it is held in Aberfeldy Townhall. The Line-up focuses on bands and music on the Scottish music scene that are maybe under represented but still have a good following or have had critical acclaim and played on radio stations like BBC6. Although that's not always the case nor an exclusive ruling on who we invite but we do try to include bands that have made an impact on the music scene in Scotland in that year. Ian Rankin has helped to curate for a number of years now and always has a good handle on what bands are worthy of a listen. We would love for you to come along - hang out and have a grin or a gin - laugh, cry and just feel the rhythm. Help us Aberfeldy residents get through the winter by joining us for a bit of a party. And then we will keep you (not forever) but in the cellar to keep the hounds happy until May/Juneish time. www.aberfeldyfestival.co.uk
