Multi-award-winning singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé mixes a diverse melting pot of musical talent in an inspiring new four-part BBC Scotland series. In Emeli Sandé’s Street Symphony, the renowned recording artist hand-picks her six favourite buskers from the streets of Scotland to join her in an uplifting

concert with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and world-class orchestral conductor John Logan. The result is a truly magical musical journey where songs and stories merge to celebrate the connection between people from different walks of life and their shared passion for music. In this first instalment, Emeli visits Aberdeen, Perth, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow to hear the diverse range of talent on offer, spanning the genres from pop to soul and country to classical. It soon becomes clear she’ll have a tough decision on her hands to choose the final six acts who’ll join her on stage at the City Halls in Glasgow. Emeli also visits parents Joel and Diane and sister Lucy at home in Alford, Aberdeenshire, and makes a trip back to her old school where she treats her music teacher and the choir to a rendition of her hit single, Next To Me, on the school piano. Singer Emeli Sandé faces a difficult choice as she selects which buskers will be given the biggest musical opportunity of their lives – to perform live with her and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Renowned conductor and arranger John Logan is on hand to help choose her final five – but with so much talent on the streets of Scotland, it’s not an easy task – and Emeli makes an executive decision to invite a sixth busker. With only weeks to go until the concert at Glasgow’s City Halls, the buskers all get together for the first time to meet arranger John and work with voice coach to the stars, Yvie Burnett. As each reveals how they started busking and what music means for them, Emeli explains exactly what it was that drew her to each act. Looking forward to the concert, Emeli also has the chance to reflect back on her early days at university in Glasgow, and reminisce with her first ever label boss John Ansdell of SoulJawn Records. Emeli Sandé’s Street Symphony is a BBC Scotland Music, Entertainment & Events Production for BBC Scotland. www.bbc.co.uk/scotland

The Filthy Tongues (Martin Metcalfe, Fin Wilson and Derek Kelly, best known as original members of 80s legends Goodbye Mr Mackenzie) - after a hiatus, during which they played a series of sell out gigs celebrating the 30th anniversary of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie’s Good Deeds and Dirty Rags - return this Autumn with a great new single and a tour of Scotland.

The Filthy Tongues have occupied a unique place at the heart of Scottish alternative rock, in various manifestations, since the mid 80’s. Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, a stunning live band with Martin Metcalfe resembling the MC of a debauched, vaguely gothic cabaret, morphed into Angelfish who established a hardcore following (which remains strong today) as the band appeared in both the UK national and US college charts.

TUTTLE plus support: At St Andrew's In The Square, Glasgow. Tickets £16 from Tickets Scotland 0141 204 5151 and Ticketweb. Doors 7.30pm, 8pm start. A virtuosic, award-winning guitarist with a gift for insightful song writing, Molly Tuttle evolves her signature sound with boundary-breaking songs on her compelling debut album, When You’re Ready. Already crowned “Instrumentalist of the Year” at the 2018 Americana Music Awards on the strength of her EP, Tuttle has broken boundaries and garnered the respect of her peers, winning fans for her incredible flatpicking guitar technique and confessional song writing. Graced with a clear, true voice and a keen melodic sense, the 25year-old seems poised for a long and exciting career. When You’re Ready, produced by Ryan Hewitt (The Avett Brothers, The Lumineers) showcases her astonishing range and versatility and shows that she is more than simply an Americana artist. Molly's new album "When You’re Ready" is infused with an intoxicating wash of drums and electric guitar while still keeping Tuttle front and centre. “I wanted to keep the focus on the songs,” she says, “but also make an interesting guitar record.” The album opens with “Million Miles,” a song that her song writing collaborator Steve Poltz brought to her, mentioning that he and Jewel started it in the ‘90s and didn’t complete it. With their blessing, she finished the song and enlisted Sierra Hull to play mandolin and Jason Isbell to sing background vocals. The wistful track sets the tone for an album that offers subtle moments of reflection as well as dazzling musicianship. Tuttle wrote or co-wrote all 11 tracks since moving to Nashville, giving the project a unified feeling. “A lot of the songs are more personal than I’ve written before, and many of them are conversational, like one person talking to another,” she says. But, when it comes to the messages of the songs, each one stands apart. “Take the Journey” provides encouragement, even as “The High Road” finds two individuals going their own way. Later, the subdued “Don’t Let Go” concludes with a spaced-out slow groove, while “Lights Came On (Power Went Out)” amplifies the album’s youthful energy. “Sleepwalking,” a gentle love song, may be the album’s most impassioned and emotionally intense moment. www.facebook.com/mollytuttlemusic www.fallenangelsclub.com

Ceòl Cholasa

Colonsay Folk Festival 12-15 September Colonsay is a small island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, located north of Islay and south of Mull. It is home to just over 100 hardy souls. We have one hotel, one shop and one café. But we also have a host of award winning beaches, unique flora and fauna, an 18 hole golf course, our own brewery - and the one of the best wee music festivals in the country, with only the hottest names in the traditional music scene! Ceòl Cholasa is not a big outdoor camping festival, full of mud and boozed up punters. It’s a small, intimate festival. You will be one of a maximum of only 250 people seeing these amazing bands up close. A festival to enjoy an unspoilt jewel of the Hebrides as well as first class traditional music. It’s a festival to catch up with old friends, make lots of new ones and hang out with the artists themselves. Everyone is here for the weekend and everyone is here for a good time. The concerts take place at our lovely hall in the main settlement of Scalasaig. These are split into afternoon (usually around 2pm – 5pm) and evening (roughly 7.30pm – 11pm) sessions. www.ceolcholasa.co.uk

Fiddler of Strathspey Festival Grantown-on-Spey 20-22 September

Ullapool 27-28 September The 15th and final Loopallu! On paper they said it wouldn’t work, a festival in late September in a remote village on the West Coast of Scotland 60 miles from the nearest town. It’s been a long and happy road, but Ullapool has become a victim of its own success. When we started out we chose the end of September to give local businesses one last boost before the long winter set in. Indeed, it soon became the busiest weekend of the year for many businesses, bringing millions of pounds into the area over the years. However, as the attraction of coming to the NW Highlands has grown over time, accommodating the Loopallu faithful has become increasingly difficult. Now September has become part of the height of the season. We may come back some day, at a different time of year and in a different format, but for now it’s time to reflect on friends made and good times had, despite the West Coast weather. So, to go out on a high we thought we would bring back some of our favourite acts from the past fourteen years. www.loopallu.co.uk

Isle of Jura Music Festival Jura 27-29 September

The ‘Isle of Jura Music Festival‘ Organising Committee is a charitable, unincorporated association. Our purpose, as recorded in our constitution, is to organize and run a Music Festival on the Isle of Jura, provide opportunities for young people to learn/improve their music based skill and help them refine and develop those skills in the future. By bringing in top class musicians every year to perform and run workshops, the instruction and inspiration they provide is invaluable. Through our youth education programme we have been able to help through a small annual grant, a number of young people to fulfill their potential and follow their chosen path.
